A GOOD READ MUSIC MATTERS SUDOKU & WORD LADDER
From the Editor
It’s great to be back with you after our winter break! I hope you all did a better job than I did of avoiding all the germs which seemed to be abundant in Bookham this year. My coughing has only just subsided, and as a result, drastic action needed to be taken. I treated myself to a New Year present in the form of a Nutri Bullet. Have you heard of them? They seem to be all the rage in the health industry and certainly make the preparation of your own fresh fruit and vegetable juices very easy indeed. My intention: to boost my immune system and generally become healthier. So far, apple, carrot and fresh ginger are featuring, with a touch of spinach and even goji berries too. I highly recommend it, my five-a-day has turned into eight or nine a day without even noticing it. Anyway, enough free promotion for Nutri Bullet for now! But if you have any good combinations you think I might like, please do email them over. We might just have to include a ‘Juice of the Month’ from now on! Romantic times ahead with Valentine’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, so I suggest that if you intend to celebrate, it may be an idea to book your table nice and early to avoid disappointment! And not long after that it will be Pancake Day on Tuesday 17th so, despite the winter weather, there is still lots to look forward to! Warmest regards,

AFTER

Then contact Pioneer Insulation for a free quote. A three bedroom semi-detached house will cost around £15,000 to completely insulate. The government is so keen for people in older properties to have this external wall insulation fitted that they will refund up to a third of the cost of the work, whatever your income. This means that the cost to you will be only around £10,000. The government has already offered the Green Deal package twice before, with the funding snapped up very quickly both times. They have now offered further funds from the 1st February 2015. If you want to take advantage of this offer, act quickly and register your interest with us now. As an approved Green Deal installer, you can save yourself around £900 by coming straight to us, rather than going through other advice sites that will just pass you on and charge a hefty introduction fee. A testimonial from a recent customer. “The house looks great and it feels so much warmer. We used to have black mould in one of the rooms. Now that the insulation has been on for a few weeks, the wall has dried and the mould has disappeared completely. Amazing.” (Mrs. Anna B, Thames Ditton).

BOOK REVIEW
A Good Read The popularity of books at Christmas is truly remarkable, and it is fun to help people find the right book for that difficult friend or relative. And there are some priceless requests. “I’m looking for a book for my daughter. Don’t know who it’s by or what it’s called but it’s very popular. Surely you must have it”. This remark is either sad or hilarious, depending on your standpoint. “Oh no. She’s not worth an £8.99 gift. Haven’t you got anything cheaper by Caitlin Moran?” Caitlin’s latest novel How To Build A Girl actually costs £14.99. What do you do in your teenage years when you realise what your parents taught you wasn’t enough? You must go out and find books and poetry and pop songs and bad heroes - and build yourself. It’s 1990. Johanna Morrigan, 14, decides that there’s no point in being Johanna anymore and reinvents herself as Dolly Wilde fast-talking, hard-drinking, sexy Gothic hero. She wants to become a writer - like Jo in Little Women, or the Brontes - but without the dying young bit. By 16, she’s smoking cigarettes, getting drunk and working for a music paper. But what happens when Johanna realises she’s built Dolly with a fatal flaw? Imagine Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar written by Rizzo from Grease. How To Build A Girl is a refreshing, beautiful and funny coming-of-age novel about a girl. Give it to your best friend. I have the good fortune to be half Belgian. Flemish in fact. I was born is East Flanders. I won’t bore
you with all of the wonderful aspects of that little country – the chocolate, the beer, the bread, the cafes, the convivial people, the beautiful medieval cities, the cartoonists! I have always been fascinated by its unfortunate legacy as the land where their fellow Europeans have fought their bloodiest battles, from Waterloo to Ypres to the Ardennes. This year sees the two hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. There are a number of new histories on the battle, but one of the most readable is Waterloo, The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles by Bernard Cornwell, the internationally bestselling author of the Sharpe novels. This is not a novel but the true story of Waterloo. On 18th June 1815, the armies of France, Britain and Prussia descended upon a quiet valley south of Brussels. In the previous three days, the French army had beaten the British at Quatre-Bras and the Prussians at Ligny. The Allies were in retreat. The bloodsoaked battle of Waterloo would become a landmark in European history, to be examined over and again, not least because until the evening of 18th, the French army was close to prevailing on the battlefield. Now, brought to life by the celebrated novelist Bernard Cornwell, this is the chronicle of the four days leading up to the actual battle and a thrilling hourby-hour account of that fateful day. Jane Brown was a remarkably gifted portrait photographer who worked for the Observer from 1949. She died on 21st December last year. 1949.

By Armand Wadsworth Her portraits, primarily photographed in black and white and utilising available light, received widespread critical acclaim and her work has been described as ‘a kind of English Cartier-Bresson’. Her portrait of Samuel Beckett is most famous and she took Queen Elizabeth II’s eightieth birthday portrait. We have a rare and beautiful book of her photography called Exposures. If you like photography, you must come in to take a look. Need to encourage a young teenage boy to enjoy a good read? Give him Rock War by Robert Muchamore. I gave it to a young teenage mate of mine, Josh, and he loved it. Meet Jay, Summer and Dylan. Jay plays guitar, writes songs and dreams of being a rock star. But his ambitions are stifled by seven siblings and a terrible drummer. Summer works hard at school, looks after her nan and has a one-in-a-million singing voice. But can her talent triumph over
her nerves? Dylan is happiest lying on his bunk, smoking, but his school rugby coach has other ideas, and Dylan reluctantly joins a band to avoid crunching tackles and icy mud. They’re about to enter the biggest battle of their lives. And there’s everything to play for. A spectacular start to the new series from Robert Muchamore, bestselling author of CHERUB. It’s out in paperback in February. Did you know that there are now fewer than a thousand independent bookshops in this country? In 2005, it was 1,535. If I were a bird, I’d be tagged and there would be people queuing up just to get a shot of me. Many of these shops close because of high rent. We are facing a rent review this year. Wish us luck and do continue to support us! We are always on the look-out for old books. And I have learnt that spring is a busy time for us to buy unwanted books from the good people of Weybridge. We don’t take paperbacks or modern publications. Anything older than 1980 is a good rule of thumb. And condition is important. If you have a valuable first edition and it’s in pieces, then its value will be seriously compromised. Call us or come in for a chat if you have anything of interest.

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY
MY NEW BEST FRIEND
When my son presented me with a bonsai plant last year, it was love at first sight. It was a beautiful, perfectly formed and wonderful miniature plant.
Bonsai is a whole new world for me, and rather like a rookie parent, there is much to learn. However, I was not daunted – after all, a plant is a plant and it comes with all the usual ‘bits’, roots stem, leaves, and flowers if you’re lucky. You may already know this, but bonsai is an art form that stems from an ancient, oriental culture, originating in China and developed by the Japanese. In the 13th century, the Japanese collected and potted wild trees that had been dwarfed by nature. These naturally-formed miniatures were some of the first bonsai. When demand for the small trees outgrew the supply, Japanese gardeners began to train bonsai from native trees. They shaped the trees to give them the illusion of age. The art of bonsai, as developed in America, is much freer in concept and style than Japanese bonsai. I wanted everyone to enjoy my miniature tree, so I put it in pride of place on the top of the bookcase in the hall. What happened next turned into a bit of a blur. An old school friend who was staying with me invited someone for tea, who turned out to be a bonsaier of some note, winning medals for his efforts, and regularly being Best in Show at his local version of Chelsea. Introductions over, things turned brutal. This love affair that had developed between me and my miniature fig suddenly got turned on its head. I was
being bombarded with harsh sentiments such as following rules, pinching to form distinct foliage pads, wiring and root pruning. The plant and I were removed from the hall and frog-marched into the kitchen. The fig was up-ended out of its pot. The roots had to be pruned, and this meant removing around 2cms on all sides (and bottom) of the root ball. I did this under instruction with my bread knife. What savagery! I thought that the plant would never forgive me. Then the conversation moved on to training and wiring. It sounded so awful that I could have fainted at that moment. ‘De-limb this part, turn this stem 90 degrees to the left, feed it, water it and you should be OK, and by the way your plant is entirely in the wrong place, it should be outside, and oh, your fig is a good beginner’s plant’…ouch. Said afternoon tea guest was led away into the sitting room as if nothing had happened. I was left reeling. Everyone settled down into gentle chit-chat about weather and stuff, but I secretly knew I had to toughen up if my plant and I were to be pushed out into the world of medals and Best in Shows. Maybe not just yet. Auntie Planty offers garden problem solving sessions in your own garden. Her advice is only a click away www.auntieplanty.co.uk © 2015 Valerie McBride-Munro

Every picture tells a story, & this one, taken on 9th February, 1979 at Radio 1 just has to be my own favourite.

Through the many years of my career, I’ve interviewed thousands of notable artists, but for sheer fame and fortune, the extraordinary pairing of George Harrison and Michael Jackson tops them all. George, the quiet Beatle, released his self-titled album in ’79 and Michael Jackson, the greatest song and dance man the world had known, was getting ready to release his ‘Off The Wall’ LP, a major breakthrough, which would go on to become one of the most influential recordings ever. It provided a glimpse of the brand new direction that funk and soul music would take, with Michael Jackson as the standard bearer, with hits such as ‘Rock With You’, ‘Off The Wall’ and ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’. The album ‘George Harrison’ was recorded in Hawaii at a time when he married Olivia, became a father for the first time and was also a regular visitor to the F1 paddock when not in the recording studio. It was a time of great contentment for the former Beatle and it shows in tracks such as ‘Blow Away’ and ‘Love Comes to Everyone”. I recall the atmosphere being friendly and fun, and the picture brings back some very fond memories of my time at the BBC. A fantastic time then for me to have had the great privilege of interviewing two exceptional talents at the height of their creative powers.

WHAT’S COOKING?
Perfect But termilk Pancakes W I T H
C H O C O L A T E
For the chocolate sauce: • 100ml essential Waitrose Double Cream • 1 Cooks’ Ingredients Chipotle Chilli, roughly chopped • 200g Divine Fairtrade 70% Dark Chocolate For the pancakes: • 150g essential Waitrose Plain Flour • Pinch of table salt • 25g golden caster sugar • 4 essential Waitrose Free Range Eggs • 100ml whole milk & 100ml buttermilk • 40g essential Waitrose Dairy Butter • 4 tbsp rapeseed or sunflower oil • Duchy Originals from Waitrose Organic Vanilla Ice Cream, to serve
METHOD To make the sauce, gently warm the cream & chilli in a pan, then leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Break the chocolate into a bowl & place on top of a pan of simmering water, making sure the base doesn’t touch the water, and allow to melt slowly while stirring. Strain the warmed cream into the melted chocolate
and stir. Discard the chilli. Keep the sauce warm while you make the pancakes. Sift the flour into a large bowl & add the salt & half the sugar. In a separate dish, crack 2 eggs into the milk. Separate the remaining 2 eggs & add the yolks to the milk. Add the buttermilk to the milk & eggs & whisk together. Slowly pour into the flour, whisking gently but being careful not to overmix. In a separate bowl, add the remaining sugar to the egg whites, whisk until light and fluffy, then fold into the batter mixture in 2 stages. Heat a little butter & oil in a non-stick pan. Depending on the size of your pan, drop up to 5 large tablespoons of the pancake mix into it & fry each pancake for 40 seconds until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip over & fry for a further 40 seconds, then remove. Repeat in batches with the rest of the batter to make 18-24 pancakes. Divide the pancakes between 6 plates & top each with a scoop of ice cream & a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Serve swiftly. CAR REVIEW
BENTLEY When you can afford to buy a legend of a luxury car for less than a week’s wages, & still have plenty change for the petrol, the temptation to indulge must be irresistible. Well, if you are a Premiership footballer, that is. And a millionaire to boot, as so many of them are nowadays. My view is evidenced by the parade of the Bentley Boys, otherwise known as the firstteamers, who pass by my house most mornings on their way to the Chelsea training ground at Stoke d’Abernon. They left me curious to discover what all the fuss is about over the daily transport favoured by the privileged, & a trusting dear friend let me borrow his Continental GTC to revel ohtoo-briefly among the elite. Now I fully appreciate what is meant by the wow factor & how a status-symbol car can excite your pleasure buzz zone beyond belief. Parking it outside a restaurant or hotel, for instance, triggers an embarrassing rush of attendants, but sparks a dangerous sensation of self-regard, too. Coping with that, & the intensity of stares,
glares & outright jealousy, becomes part of the pride of driving the ultimate in luxury on four wheels. Little wonder the £250,000 -a-week soccer heroes choose to commute from their £5m mansions in a hand-crafted motor definitely fit for purpose, if being seen to be a megastar is a priority. And it usually is with them. My trusting friend’s on-loan GTC was sheer, eye-catching beauty on the move, with a palatial interior of wood & luxurious leather & just about every touch-button gizmo, dial & read-out you could possibly desire. Despite its 2.5-tonne kerbweight, it drives & corners with perfect behaviour What isn’t there you can specify and Bentley will include it. At an extra cost, of course. With a parent company lsuch as
Audi, one should expect a level of reliability second to none &, my friend assures me that this is exactly the situation. He should know: he’s on his third Bentley. This one, he reckons, & I can’t argue, is the finest so far from the car’s up-north facility at Crewe in Cheshire. Demand is so high that the residuals should be copper-bottomed. But if you are money-bags who can afford it, who worries anyway? It may sound churlish, faced with such perfection, but I was a wee bit disappointed that the wind rush was so noisily invasive when the roof was up. And while there is plenty of space up front, the leg-room in the back is relatively sparse. As panache goes, the exquisitelycrafted, four-wheel drive chassis Bentley - fast, refined & as capable as can be - is personification proof positive. I was never more reluctant to hand back a car, but thankful I could without a scratch. And I never saw an owner so relieved to have his pride & joy returned in one immaculate piece.. Specification: The Continental GTC. Engine V8, BHP 500. Zero60mph 4.7 seconds. Top Speed 187 mph. Mpg 25.9. Price: £143.915. Don’t bother to haggle...

GREAT DEALS TO BE HAD ON MULTIPLE BOOKINGS...
IS YOUR PRINTER G E T T I N G YO U D O W N ?
We hear frequently of users’ dissatisfaction with their printers, due to a number of common gripes, such as: they are too costly to run, too slow, don’t hold enough paper, are too fiddly, aren’t wireless.... the list goes on. Generally, there’s no such thing as a bad printer, but rather, one that doesn’t match your needs. With combined wireless printer/copier/scanners starting at £55.00, there is a massive array of choice at extremely good value. To achieve the best value from your purchase, ensure the printer has 4 or 6 (for true photo quality) separate ink cartridges. This enables you to replace the individual cartridges when they run out, rather than replacing a two-thirds full cartridge. The cost of the consumables is a major factor when selecting the best machine for you. The lower priced printers generally have smaller capacity ink cartridges, therefore greater running costs. If you are replacing your inks more than once a month, you probably have the wrong printer and are paying too much to run the printer. By way of an example, we have an Epson printer/copier/scanner for £55.00; the replacement black cartridge costing £9.00 will provide a page yield of 175 pages, therefore the cost is 5.1 pence per page. At the other end of the scale, we have an A3 Epson printer/copier/scanner for £200.00 (on special currently, down from £290.00); the replacement black cartridges cost £34.00 which will provide a page yield of 2,200 pages, therefore the cost is 0.64 pence per page. All information regarding cartridge yields was taken from Epson’s website on www.epson.eu/pageyield ....and yes, there is a standard European printed page!

INSPIRATION COACHING
A L L C H A N G E ! A re you comfortable with change? Do you thrive on new ideas, opportunities and possibilities? Or are you in the ‘better the devil you know’ camp?
Get in on the action Sometimes, change desperately needs to happen and we either ignore the signals or resist it. When things aren’t going the way we’d like them to, some of us shrug our shoulders and say ‘that’s life’; others rage inwardly and blame their partner/parent/child/ boss/neighbour. In both situations, we are making ourselves victims of the choices of others, powerless to choose for ourselves. Let’s face it, change is part of life. If you want to be happy with the changes in YOUR life, it helps to be part of the decision-making process and take charge of the change.
Get comfortable with change Some major changes are hard to make and most of us will resist changing until the pain of staying in the situation is greater than the pain we anticipate from leaving it. So Life has a way of turning up the volume on the pain until we finally decide to deal with it. The good news is that, at such times, we invariably grow as human beings and will be able to deal with other aspects of our life more resourcefully as a result. We become more resilient, a key life skill that enables us to recover quickly from difficulties.
‘But I’m OK - it’s my partner/boss/ neighbour who’s the problem.’
We can’t change anyone else, but if we change ourselves, our relationships will have to change too. Non-Violent Communication (NVC) is a great resource to help us take responsibility for our words, actions and impact on those around us. Sometimes we haven’t a clue where to start, sometimes we know what we need to do and don’t know how, and sometimes we just need someone to help us believe in ourselves enough to get out there and DO it.
So why not change, for a change?
