Welcome to our June Issue! I do hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Easter break, and with a few more Bank Holidays to look forward to this month, we welcome the month of May. Isn’t it great having these longer evenings? Really makes me feel like summer is just around the corner! I am delighted to welcome back guest writer, Henry Turner; this month, Henry visited some local churches and tells us all about The Churches Conservation Trust local tour that he attended recently. I enjoyed an evening celebration of the first year in business for a lovely Weybridge company. See the photos of the event inside. As well as our normal crossword competitions which can be found on pages 43/44, we have another chance to win this month: this time, two sets of two tickets for a musical concert being held at The Riverhouse Barn. Turn to page 26 to enter. There are lots of other interesting bits and bobs for you to discover inside, so I’ll leave you to it. Until next time…

Wishing you all a great month, Warmest regards,

Myobrace: Straight teeth….. without braces.

At Danny de Villiers Dentist, we use a series of removable dental appliances that are worn for just 1-2 hours each day & overnight while sleeping! Modern research has shown that crowded teeth, incorrect jaw development & other orthodontic problems are not caused by big teeth in small jaws or hereditary factors. Mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing & thumb sucking (known as incorrect myofunctional habits) are the real causes. Allergies, asthma & an open mouth posture also contribute to incorrect jaw development. Growing up, most of us have had one or more of these myofunctional problems, which may have been the cause of incorrect dental & facial development.

Myobrace for juniors:

From 3-5 years of age, children are growing most rapidly & can show signs of incorrect bite & misaligned first teeth.

Myobrace for kids:

From 5-10 years of age, children are getting their first permanent teeth. At this stage the teeth can become crowded & the jaws misaligned.

Myobrace for teens:

At 10-15 years of age, children are getting the remainder of their permanent teeth. Crowding & poor jaw alignment can become more severe as the adult face develops.

Myobrace for adults:

Many adults have had extractions & braces, only to have their teeth crowd up again. The majority of adults do not want to wear braces again.

THE MYOBRACE TREATMENT GOALS FOR BEST RESULTS ARE: *Correct nasal breathing ……... Lips together at rest. *Correct tongue position……..Behind upper teeth *No lip activity when swallowing…..allows front teeth to develop correctly. *Good facial development *No braces, retainers, or extractions (if possible) *Straight teeth

MY LIFE WITH

FRANK ZAPPA Living in Twickenham, Pauline Butcher was a well-mannered young woman, a typist and amateur model in 1967, when a chance encounter started a partnership that would fuel her writing career. Working as a typist for a London agency, Pauline was commissioned to transcribe the lyrics of musician Frank Zappa’s song, ‘Brown Shoes Don’t Make It.’ The song’s crude and abstract metaphors, as well as Zappa’s constant use of profanity, were in stark contrast to Pauline’s sensibilities. Her protests about his language and the song, along with suggestions for alternate lyrics, endeared her to Zappa and the two struck up a rapport. The association that followed is documented in her book Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa, which BBC 4 adapted into a play broadcast on Tuesday, May 6th. After their meeting, the pair kept in touch, and when Pauline took a holiday to New York in 1968 to stay with her sisters, they met again. Pauline, who had come to admire Frank as a man who actually listened to and valued her opinion, was somewhat shocked to learn that he was a married man. At dinner one night when talking with Frank, Pauline joked about a proposed book, that she could type it up for him in London.

Frank responded to the quip by offering to hire her as his secretary in California. Though taken aback, Pauline accepted the offer. Their professional relationship got off to an awkward start when Frank took Pauline back to his hotel room and asked if, were she his secretary, he’d be able to become intimate with her. Pauline, fearful of losing the job and mindful of Frank’s wife, rebuffed his advances. The star remained true to his word about the job, however, and Pauline flew on with him to California, where she went on Frank’s payroll, ostensibly as a songwriter. She was quickly shown the ‘Log Cabin’; Frank’s hangout property where she was to live for five months. Pauline recalls that it was always full of people and bandmates. “Frank liked having people around, even if he didn’t pay them much attention.” Perhaps one of the most dramatic incidents was when a gunman named ‘Raven’ arrived at the Cabin with a bag of blood and a revolver. Zappa calmly manipulated Raven and the other occupants of the cabin into walking to the nearby lake, and when there, to throw things into it. Pauline threw a twig. Fortunately, Raven threw his gun. In spite of Frank’s seemingly progressive character as a musician, some frictions did

remained in England recuperating and continued to work for Frank. Pauline had wanted to attend university in California, but back home, she became aware of eased restrictions for entering Cambridge. She took a gamble and decided to apply, even though it meant losing her Green Card. At university, she met her husband and the two married. After her spouse became active in banking, the two moved to Singapore. When they eventually moved back to Cobham, a few years ago Pauline decided to rekindle her earlier ambition to write a book. Her time with Frank was “the only story that only I could tell” and publishers showed immediate interest. The book and the new radio programme were successful. Although it may be some sixty years since Pauline developed her writing aspirations, she’s nevertheless fulfilled them. Frank, she believes, would have been proud.

develop between him and Pauline. Although he was “supportive more than anyone else in my life” of her ambitions to write, Zappa was not in favour of a newfound attraction to feminism on Pauline’s part. Additionally, he did not show any enthusiasm for Pauline’s desire to apply to the University of California. Whilst in California, Pauline had read Kate Millett’s sexual politics and came to embrace the movement. “The phrase ‘love me less, respect me more,’ really spoke to me. It was exactly what needed to be said.’ Frank was disparaging of feminism as a movement and feminists as a whole. Contrary to his womanising on the road and his rockstar persona, Frank himself was “at the core, deeply conservative.” He abhorred drug-use and was strict in banning their consumption at the cabin. He even took care to stay in a separate hotel from his band mates for fear of police intervention. In 1971, a severe ear infection prompted Pauline to fly home for an operation. She

CAR REVIEW

PEUGEOT 308 save loads of fiddling. Peugeot...or PURRgeot...put their newcomer through two million miles of rigorous testing before its recent launch. They made it lighter than its stuffy predecessor, so its fuel thirst is not so unquenchable, and re-fashioned its indoors set-up to a really comfy level with bags of room for mum and the kids. If I were a rival producer in this market, I would be one concerned body because the 308’s show-off ability is not limited to its sleek appearance but also to its agility and economy. What more could you ask? Oh yes, how much? Between £14,495 and £24,045. My top-of-the class Feline model - they also have Access, Active and Allure - was a pussycat around town and a happy-to-go performer on the motorways. PURRR-fect.... Specification: Feline. Engine 1.6. 1598cc. BHP 156. Six speed manual. Top speed 132 mph. 0-62 8.4 secs. MPG 48.7. Price :£21,345.

By Ted Macauley

Let me introduce you to the Peugeot 308, or rather, the PURR-geot Feline. As hatchbacks go - and this one certainly does -the French car maker has weighed in with an ooh-la-la of a revitalised version of the preceding older, slower, more cumbersome model. And it is a treat of a drive that takes the price and style battle right to the doorstep of its Korean rivals. Understated it may look kerbside, but as a performer with balance and pep, nippy both off the mark and on the run, the updated, uprated 308 is a winner. And the interior is as refined as can be, with innovative simplified and straightforward touch-screen instrumentation that even technical duffers like me can make sense of without having to take a degree course in clocks and dials. The 9.7-inch display, so neat and tidy with its seven buttons, warns you of just about everything - and the keyless entry and start-up

Bread Mix

• 250g tub essential Waitrose Italian

Ricotta

• 230g bunch Waitrose British Asparagus,

halved lengthways

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 tbsp fresh Waitrose Green Pesto with

Basil

Method

Place the bread mix in a large bowl, setting aside a handful for dusting the surface. Make a well in the centre, add 250ml lukewarm water, then bring together to make a slightly sticky dough. Knead the dough vigorously for 5 minutes

until it becomes smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 4 even-sized balls, then roll out to make 26 x 12cm ovals. Transfer to 2 large, non-stick baking sheets. Preheat the oven to 220ºC, Gas Mark 7. Spoon the ricotta onto the pizza bases, then place the asparagus on top. Drizzle lightly with olive oil and leave to rise for 10 minutes. Bake for 15 minutes until the base is cooked through and the asparagus is tender. Dot over the pesto and finish with a good grinding of black pepper. Serve warm. Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands Drive, Weybridge, Surrey, KT13 0SL Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are proud to host a Classic Car Show and Fayre for the second year at the iconic MercedesBenz World in Weybridge, Surrey. The impressive building of Mercedes-Benz World is home to exhibitions and examples of legendary Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and located on the famous Brooklands site, it is the perfect backdrop for the hundreds of stunning classic cars and motorcycles that we hope will join us. The new venue proved a big hit with attendees last year, with over 5,000

people viewing the 430 classic cars and motorcycles on display. It was certainly one of the largest classic car shows in the area, and this year we are moving the cars nearer to the field of activities. Trade stalls, music, and ‘adrenaline’ activities for the children will help to keep the crowd amused and there will be the opportunity to enjoy refreshments. There are four trophies to be won – Best Car and Best Motorcycle, plus Runner-up for each, and the winners will get to drive round the Mercedes track!

If you are interested in exhibiting your classic car or motorbike at the show, visit the Hospices website www.wsbhospices.co.uk where a form can be downloaded, or call Sue Spencer on 01483 881750. Entry forms need to be returned by 24 May 2014 and entries are not permitted on the day.

A Good Read Armand Wadsworth

A great deal has been published about the First World War this year. Max Hastings and Jeremy Paxman have been much praised and heavily promoted. But if there is one book that successfully makes some sense of the lead-up to that catastrophe, it is The War That Ended Peace by Margaret MacMilan. It is the winner of the International Affairs Book of the Year at the Political Book Awards 2014. The First World War followed a period of sustained peace in Europe, during which people talked with confidence of prosperity, progress and hope. But in 1914, Europe walked into a catastrophic conflict which killed millions of its men, bled its economies dry and shook empires and societies to pieces. It fatally undermined Europe’s dominance of the world. Yet it was a war which, right up to the last minute, could have been avoided. So why did it happen? This masterful and accessible exploration by Professor MacMilan of how Europe chose its path towards war will change and enrich how we view this defining moment in our history. The Digested Twenty First Century by John Crace. John Crace’s Digested Read first appeared in the Guardian in February 2000 and has been running ever since. Each week, Crace condenses a new book anything from a Booker Prize winner to a Nigella cookery book is fair game to 700 words in a parody of the plot, style, dialogue and

themes. Or the lack of them! The Digested Read has not just become an institution for readers: it is read and enjoyed by publishers and authors too... so long as it is not their book being digested. A few years ago, Crace wrote Brideshead Abbreviated, A Digested Read of the 20th Century. This is the 21st Century so far. The Intimate Letters of England’s Queens by Margaret Sanders opens with the letters of Catherine of Aragon to her daughter, Mary, and the letter she wrote to her husband Henry VIII shortly before her death in 1536. This fascinating collection of letters allows the reader an insight into the private thoughts and feelings of these women, from the bitter anger expressed by Anne Boleyn in her letter to Cardinal Wolsey and her heartfelt attempt to save herself from death whilst imprisoned in the Tower to the utter despair felt by Queen Victoria on the death of her beloved husband. Appetite by Philip Kazan is a sophisticated historical novel that will appeal to fans of Perfume and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Set in Florence, 1466, it brings the bustling, passionate city to life, with a central character who has a unique gift for creating exquisite cuisine. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is out in paperback this month. Aged thirteen, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely

Books Bought absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to the thing that most reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld. As he grows up, Theo moves between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty antiques store where he works. His talisman, the painting, draws him into the centre of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch combines vivid characters and thrilling suspense. As with her novel The Secret History, it is a beautiful and addictive triumph. I’ve just finished reading The Shock of The Fall by Nathan Filer. It is his debut novel and it won The Costa Book Award last year. It starts thus: ‘I’ll tell you what happened because it will be a good way to introduce my brother. His name’s Simon. I think you’re going to like him. I really do. But in a couple of pages he’ll be dead. And he was never the same after that.’ There are books you can’t stop reading, which keep you up all night. There are books which let us into the hidden parts of life and make them vividly real. There are books which, because of the sheer skill with which every word is chosen, linger in your mind for days. The Shock of the Fall is all of these books. The Shock of the Fall

Book Voucher to WIN see p is an extraordinary portrait of one man’s descent into mental illness. It is a brave and groundbreaking novel from one of the most exciting new voices in fiction. Have you or your child discovered The World of Norm? Book 6: May Need Rebooting is just out. It’s for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid or David Walliams. Is life still unfair for Norm? Abso-flippinglutely! Ages 9+ For younger children this June I recommend I Am An Artist by Marta Altes. A sharp and silly book showing how art is everywhere. This boy can’t stop creating art - in his socks, in the contents of the fridge, on the cat - but his mum’s not too happy. ‘There’s a truly inspirational message in this gloriously anarchic picture book...would give Banksy a run for his money. ‘Daily Mail’ We are ordering in our new spring selection of toys from Djeco in Paris. All incredibly colourful, eccentric and creative. Come and see. And don’t forget that our Loyalty Card can be used with purchases of books, toys and gifts. Once full, it entitles you to £5 off your next purchase. It is very fine to see spring after what has been an exceptionally long, wet and windy winter. I’ve already been on a number of fine walks in Surrey and Dorset this year. The countryside is vibrant and we have maps and walking guides galore to help you discover and enjoy it.

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY The slug is public enemy number one in most gardens, and if you can’t actually see the fat slimy body, there is no doubt where it’s been. The silvery trail of slime and line of vandalised plants tells the whole sad story. A slug’s appetite is voracious. In 24 hours, he can munch up to 40% of his own body weight. There can be as many as 200 slugs per square metre, so if you see one in the garden you can be sure that he is not alone! But the good news is that he’ll slow down when the weather gets cold. And although I’ve been calling slugs ‘him’, they are actually hermaphrodites - the best of both worlds - which means that any passing pair have astounding reproduction potential and could produce up to 90,000 grandchildren! That’s the size of the problem, now to find ways of eliminating our monster, and there’s a range of remedies to choose from. Pellets You may choose to use these popular poisoned baits, but take great care, especially if there are dogs, cats or wildlife around. Biological control Nematodes (eelworms) are the perfect remedy if you have animals. Nematodes are microscopic worm-like creatures that burrow into slugs and spread a sluggy disease that finishes them off in a few days. Night time foray Slugs are night feeders, and if you visit the garden on a warm, dark, humid night, armed with a torch, you can pick them off your plants in huge numbers with your bare hands. Disposal is up to you - either into a bucket of salty water, or bagged as a banquet for local frogs, hedgehogs, moles, shrews, rooks, starlings,

blackbirds, thrushes and ducks. Beer traps A shallow container sunk into the ground and filled with beer attracts them, intoxicates them, and annihilates them. There’s no need to buy anything special - slugs are as happy with flat lager as real ale, but if beer is considered too much of a luxury for slug baiting, use one 7oz packet of dried yeast in a small quantity of water with some potato peelings. Yummy! Electrical barrier Strips of copper sheet metal produce a harmless electric tingle, which is too uncomfortable for the slug to cross - no matter how hungry he is! You can buy self-adhesive copper tape to stick around the outer rim of pots. Physical barrier I consider eggs shells and grit to be of marginal use, but I’m told that placing old coffee grounds and tea leaves around a plant will work as the slug doesn’t like caffeine! Auntie Planty is a qualified horticulturist who offers gardening know-how sessions in your own garden. Catch her on Brooklands Radio every other Friday, at 14.30. © 2014 Valerie McBride-Munro

MUSIC THERAPY When Vicky Lord was thirteen years old, she read a book about music therapy. Having always been a keen musician, even then, Vicky thought that music could help us through life in so many ways. Previously, she worked in business in the IT and Telecoms sector, with over 13 years’ experience and as one of the founding board of Directors at Uswitch.com. Vicky continues to add to her credentials and is currently studying for an MSC in Clinical Neuroscience at Roehampton. But her calling was always music therapy, so Vicky made the brave decision to change directions and started her training at The Guildhall School of Music. It was during this time she won a financial award competition, which was sponsored by Deutsche Bank. The £3000 prize money enabled her to set up her music therapy business and offer parents subsidised therapy sessions for children who could benefit. Vicky has been offering music as therapy for eleven years now.

Her business is a non - profit project to help people through music.

Vicky says ‘Almost everyone responds to music, regardless of any physical or cognitive disability or emotional need. Music therapy can provide emotional support in a similar way to counselling, as well as cognitive, social and communication

development in children. It can be particularly beneficial for people who have difficulties communicating, as it offers them a means of self-expression without words, building a sense of awareness and selfesteem. Music therapy is based on the belief that the ability to respond to and express oneself through music is an inborn quality in all human beings, regardless of disability, illness or injury, and not dependent on musical training. The aims of music therapy are therapeutic rather than musical. My overall aim is to be closely involved with the development of the whole child and to help him/her achieve their full potential. Music therapy sessions are not like music lessons, where the focus might be on learning a specific instrument. Instead, music is used as a way of exploring communications and emotions. Music therapy is a child-led activity, where the therapist improvises music in response to the child’s singing, musical contributions, movements, breathing patterns or mood. Children are given plenty of time to initiate or respond to the music. This may give the child the experience of ‘togetherness’, being listened to, being heard and accepted. This helps to build a positive and therapeutic relationship between child and therapist and parent, if taking part in the session.

Most music therapy sessions are on a oneto-one basis and last for around 30 minutes. Sometimes, small groups are run with 3-4 people including at least one therapist.’ Music therapists consider neurological pathways which can modify and help with neurodegeneration and neurodevelopmental problems. This is a concept called neuroplasticity which occurs rapidly in children’s and adolescent’s development and to a lesser degree in adults’ brains in many cognitive, motor and sensory areas Here we can see an image showing the complexity of neural pathways in regions of the brain.

Vicky’s main experience in these areas comes from having worked with children from private practices, children’s hospitals, The Children’s Trust in Tadworth, in schools and in various children’s centres. Vicky’s community project is called Dolphin Music Therapy which she runs from home in Claygate. It is a subsidised service, open to all children and adolescents. She also works at The Three Rivers Children’s Centre and as a volunteer music therapist at The Children’s Trust with children who have acquired brain injury through accident or illness. The stimulus of music really does help

‘We work on a number of levels, physical through motor skills, sensory integration using sound, touch and sight, cognitively and neurologically at the top – the organization and integration of the input. I integrate play therapy into my practice and specific neurological techniques: for example, memory or auditory discrimination processing tasks for cognition and coordination. In terms of children I work with, their issues range from communication and social difficulties, neurodevelopmental disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, cancer and cerebral palsy. I work with the child and sometimes the parents to provide both with support and emotional development and we normally all have good fun together. ‘

the brain develop and repair; in fact, music therapy has been shown to have a beneficial effect right up until the age of 23. As well as running her business, Vicky is also a trustee at two children’s music therapy charities in London and is a governor at Claygate Primary School...and very involved with the Claygate Village Show too! It’s just a habit... 

Have you noticed how, when we talk or think about habits, very often the word ‘bad’ is hovering somewhere in the background? A habit is just something we consciously chose to do in the past, then repeated so often that we continue to do it without thinking. Habits can be useful: if we had to think about when and where to brush our teeth each day, chances are we’d never get round to it!

In with the new

If you want to create a new habit, it helps to be clear WHY - how will it add love / joy / wellbeing / success to your life? Remind yourself of your motivation frequently. It also helps to be accountable to someone – a friend, group or coach; often we’re prepared to let ourselves down but not someone else.

Start small

A small change is easier to start, (you could start one right now!), easier to keep up and easier to incorporate into your normal life. Try this one: SMILE before you open your eyes each morning. Choose easy habits that you’re more likely to succeed at (and enjoy) to begin with. You’re building your habit skills as well as trust in yourself as someone who can create habits.

Practice makes perfect

Every time we do something new, we’re creating a new neural pathway in our brain. The more times we do it, the stronger that neural pathway becomes until eventually, (between 21 days and three months) we’ve

created a habit.

Stick with it

No exceptions! ‘Just this once’ and before long it will be on the Habit Heap and you’ll end up losing faith in your ability to create habits that stick. But do plan ahead: if you know your routine will be changing, eg a house-move or major life event, decide in advance whether you’re going to put your habit on hold or change the way you go about it, so that it doesn’t become a failed habit. The small print: Expect discomfort - whether you’re ending or starting a habit, it will feel strange at first Easy does it - there’s no point in trying to do too much and then being overwhelmed Create a cue - anchoring a new habit in the same place and time in your daily schedule will make it more likely to stick

Choose your habits well

Sonia Duggan CPCC ACC

PS – As you can see, I believe we can be masters rather than slaves of our habits. What habit would make a positive difference to your life? If you need a hand, let’s have a chat about how you could create powerful habits and enjoy life more.

NEWLY REFURBISHED HOLIDAY FLAT FOR RENT

Self-catering in Snowdonia Herongate is a luxury self-catering flat sleeping six in the Snowdonia National Park with outstanding views north across the Mawddach Estuary & the Rhinog mountains. The poet William Wordsworth called it “the sublime estuary”.

The newly-refurbished flat is on the second floor above the owners’ accommodation consisting of a hall/landing, three bedrooms, kitchen/diner, sitting room & bathroom. The sitting room & two bedrooms have the estuary view, whilst the other bedroom & the kitchen have views south across the Cader Idris mountain range. Herongate is located in an ideal location for walking, cycling, bird watching, climbing, pony trekking & much more. The Mawddach Trail is close by which offers a scenic eight-mile walk or cycle to Dolgellau, a typical Welsh market town. Alternatively, in the other direction, a twenty-minute walk will take you to the seaside town of Barmouth, crossing the 900-metre Afon Mawddach bridge with its magnificent views along the estuary.
