Hello once again,
I do hope you are all well and that you have avoided any flooding. It’s all been quite scary really, hasn’t it, listening to the news, seeing the unimaginable images of so many properties submerged in water, which is increasingly getting nearer and nearer to home. I’m hoping that the norm will apply here, in that historically, every time I mention the weather when writing this message, it’s very different by the time you read this! Let’s just hope the change is for the better, of course, or I will be in big trouble! This month has once again flown by, but along the way, I heard a wonderful story from a wellknown local garage and I enjoy sharing it here with you. I also spent a wonderful evening at Meejana Lebanese Restaurant in Church Street, and not related in any way, also tried out a 9 day cleansing programme! Apologies must go to Weybridge Books and to all you avid crossword puzzlers out there, as last month’s Competition Puzzle didn’t match the grid provided! Ooops! Very sorry, all. We did however still have a few very determined folk who re-drew the grid – thank you so much for your tenacity! Our winner is listed inside and we will make a very big effort to prevent such an error from happening again. Time for me to go now, but I do hope you enjoy this issue!.
Happy Mothers’ Day to all you mums out there! (That’s 30th March btw!)
Oh yes, & enjoy Pancake Day too!! (4th March!) Until next month, take care. Ros x

VAN T0 JAPAN When I chatted recently to new advertiser Alex Abadzis, who runs Grove Garage in Weybridge, he told me a great little story about his garage. I asked him if I could share this with you. He was delighted to oblige, so here it is. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Some years ago, Alex bought a 1965 Citroen AK250 Fourgonette (2CV van) in France and brought it back to the UK. Once it was back in
Weybridge, he restored it and promptly had it sign-written to promote his garage. Maybe some of you remember it? After a few years of using the van, Alex decided to sell it, as he had a new project on the go in the form of a 1968 Renault 8 Gordini. The Citroen van went onto ebay and only a few days later, it was sold to a man in Japan. The deal was done and Alex delivered the van to Southampton docks, from where it was shipped to Yokohama in Japan! Seven weeks later, Alex received an email with a
photo of the van on Yokohama port side, with one very happy customer standing next to it. As time passed, Alex forgot all about his little Citroen van. But three years later, out of the blue, he received another phone call from Japan, this time from a man who said he’d bought the van from the original purchaser. He had used the phone number from the side of the van to contact Alex. He informed Alex that he was one of the Tamiya Models’ automotive consultants and had approval to re-create the Citroen van as a model kit. They needed Alex’s permission to do so because it still had his company name and number on the side and this would be exactly copied onto the model. Of course, Alex was delighted and actually felt very proud that they wanted to duplicate the classic vehicle that he had restored, and so
he gave permission straight away. Things settled down, and once again, Alex thought this was the end of the matter. But one day, a visitor turned up at Grove Garage in Weybridge, a rather distinguished older Japanese gentleman, in fact. He had been in the UK, visiting a few British Classic Car auction houses and while he was here, he took it upon himself to deliver a model of the Citroen van to Alex. It was, of course, the gentleman who had organized the reproduction. These kits of the Grove Garage van are now available all over the world and they even have the
full company name and phone number on them. Alex was yet again amazed and delighted! The kit is available on ebay which is very appropriate, as that is where Alex sold his van in the first place. How amazing is that?! I wonder if the Tamiya Model Company would be interested in reproducing my little yellow Mini Cooper with my company name on it?
Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Alex. What a great story!

We are very spoilt in the UK with such a vast selection of international culinary styles to choose from when dining out. We can virtually sample the world’s menus in any British town. One such international stop I would highly recommend is Meejana Lebanese restaurant in Weybridge. No passport is required on this mini-break, and if you enjoy fresh, healthy dishes with delicious flavours, your taste buds will certainly be in for a treat. Each dish is presented so beautifully: simple touches,
such as the contrast of colours between the wonderful aubergine dip and the blood red pomegranate sprinkled on top, made our meal a visual delight as well as a delicious dinner. The restaurant itself is very pretty; there are two sections and walking in, it feels like you are entering a well-loved home. This venue would make a great choice for either a romantic meal for two or enjoying time with friends or family. There are many traditional touches: each table Is covered
with a beautiful Lebanese tablecloth, there are pretty lanterns and lovely things to look at, fresh flowers and even baskets of fruit, all ingredients which go to make a prefect recipe. Our meal was delicious. We asked Edward, our host, to make selections for us. My guest was vegetarian and the variety of dishes for her was wonderful. As already mentioned, the aubergine dip was divine, the salad was an array of colours & flavours and the potato dish, with a mix of spinach and crispy onion strips, was a lovely combination. To that he added some haloummi and tomato-filled flat bread, some calamari with home-made tartar sauce and
some cheeky chicken livers. A wonderful feast indeed! We finished our meal with pistachio ice cream and some little Lebanese pastries called baklava, both of which were totally delicious. I have eaten in a number of Lebanese restaurants in a number of countries and Meejana is up there with the best. This is my favourite sort of food and I really enjoyed my visit. I will certainly be coming back and sharing this wonderful restaurant with my nearest and dearest. The Weybridge Flyer strongly recommends Meejana Lebanese Restaurant. Our thanks go to Edward & Rita for a wonderful evening.

A Good Read Armand Wadsworth
The History of Walton Bridge by Nick Pollard. This fine colour illustrated book has been selling steadily over the last few months. The recently opened Walton Bridge is the sixth bridge to span the Thames at Walton. Nick presents the history of the crossing from ancient times before a bridge existed through to the construction of the first wooden bridge in 1750 and various replacements to the present day. It has been a chequered history, involving private enterprise, public funds (or the lack of these), total collapse, wartime bombing, bankruptcy, legal disputes and two worldfamous artists. The present bridge is designed to last a century. Sticking with the Thames, The Story of the Thames by Andrew Sargent has recently been published. It is the longest river in England and has witnessed the entire history of a country and its capital. The Story of the Thames looks at history from the river’s perspective, investigating how the life of the nation has affected the river, and in turn, how the river has been viewed by those who live along its length. In doing so, it spans 500,000 years (longer than human history) and extends from source to mouth. The Thames is often taken for granted (unless it floods). People assume that it is simply there, flowing passively through the human world, unchanging. That is not the case. The river has changed physically, initially due to natural causes and latterly as a
result of human intervention and in how it is used. A splendid insight. What A Life! Selected Short Stories by J. B. Priestley. A new selection of short stories from one of the most popular authors of the 20th Century. Humour, social insight and faith in traditional English values. If you’ve read him before, then you’ll relish this new collection. If you’ve not read him, then this is a fine discovery. I reviewed this last year and predicted that it would be immensely popular. Not so far it hasn’t. It failed as a hardback but is out now in paperback. I’ll stick by my prediction. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion is a story about love, life and lobsters. Meet Don Tillman. Don is getting married. He just doesn’t know who to yet. But he has designed a very detailed questionnaire to help him find the perfect woman. One thing he already knows, though, is that it’s not Rosie. Absolutely, completely, definitely not. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce was a bestseller in Weybridge last year. Her latest novel, Perfect, is out in March. The Living Years by Mike Rutherford. A memoir from the bassist of the enormously successful Genesis. “Now Michael, you’re the son of a naval officer, you must behave
Books Bought like a naval officer at all times...” What Captain William Rutherford told his sevenyear-old son Michael was to stay with him all his life. The Living Years spans the entire history of Genesis (and other musical incarnations, such as Mike and the Mechanics) from the earliest days as a school band to the triumphant 2007 reunion tour when the band played to over 500,000 people in Rome. But this is not just another rock’n’roll memoir. This is also a book about a father and son whose lives and complex relationship reflect the seismic social and cultural shifts that took place during the twentieth century. Here are a few recommendations for new children’s books this winter. Circus of Thieves & The Raffle of Doom by William Sutcliffe and David Tazzyman. Hannah’s life is dull until a circus full of whacky characters arrives in town. But its evil ringmaster, Armitage Shank, has a stinking plan. A mix of slapstick humour and wordplay from the bestselling author and illustrator behind Mr.Gum. Ages 8+ Picture Me Gone is the compelling new novel by the author of How I Live Now, Meg Rosoff. Mila is on a roadtrip across the USA with her father. They are looking for his best friend but Mila discovers a more important truth. Sometimes, the act of searching reveals
Book Voucher to WIN see p 32 more than the final discovery. Adults do not have all the answers. It all depends what questions you ask. This book is a brilliantly atmospheric exploration of someone on the brink of adulthood. Ages 12+ Farmer John’s Tractor by Sally Sutton will introduce the youngest of your children to all the fun and adventure of FLOODS! A beautifully illustrated tale of a family stranded in a flood, where a reliable old tractor may be the only thing that can help. Ages 2+ A Tale of Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz. This book has been a sensation in the United States. Readers, beware. Warlocks with dark spells, hunters with deadly aim and bakers with ovens retrofitted for cooking children lurk within these pages. But if you dare, turn the page and learn the true story of Hansel and Gretel - the story behind (and beyond) the breadcrumbs, edible houses and outwitted witches. Come on in. It may be frightening, it’s certainly bloody, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. “Gidwitz manages to balance the grisly violence of the original Grimms’ Fairy Tales with a wonderful sense of humour and narrative voice. Check it out!” (Rick Riordan). “Unlike any children’s book I’ve ever read. It holds up to multiple readings, like the classic I think it will turn out to be”. (New York Times).

CLEAN 9 I was recently asked to review a Forever Living Clean 9 programme. For the first two days, you have one special shake to drink a day, along with aloe vera, garcinia, bee pollen and lots of water. Day One was fine; I was surprised that I didn’t really feel that hungry. Day Two was a little harder for me but I got through it OK and decided that an early night was a good idea! Once I reached Day Three, I started to feel better and as if I was already starting to lose some weight, but I resisted the urge to stand on the scales! By now, it was also much more manageable because I was able to have two shakes during the day and a 600 calorie meal in the evening. I found myself really looking forward to my evening meal and not worrying so much about the fact that I wasn’t eating in the day. I soon realized how much I pick at food, more out of habit than necessity to be honest, and certainly when I didn’t really need to. In fact, if I did feel a little hungry, I simply drank more water which filled me up. But on the whole, the shakes did a pretty good job of getting me through the day. It is also recommended that you take 20 minutes of fairly gentle exercise, and walking the dogs sorted that out for me.
This 9-day programme is all about cleansing your body and getting it to work more efficiently. Endorsed by doctors and nutritionists, it focuses on losing only body fat. It is a great way to break old habits and start afresh, whilst cleansing your body of unnatural chemicals. The easy-to-follow 9-day programme is designed to kick-start your weight loss, whilst putting you on the right path to take control of your overall health. • My weight loss was more than I expected; I lost 6 lbs over the 9 days. • I feel more energetic. • My skin certainly looks better. • And it was actually easier to stick to than I thought it would be. As part of the programme, you are encouraged to measure various points of your body at the start and end of the cleanse. By doing this, I found that I had an overall total loss of 6 inches which I was delighted with. I am snacking less and feel that I have made a very positive change to my eating habits. I have also felt more energized. Even now, when I am on a tight deadline for work, when I would normally be reaching for the biscuit tin, I don’t feel tempted to stray. I feel much less drawn to
sweet things in general, and with all the talk of sugar in the news, this has to be a very positive step forward! In addition to the Clean 9 programme, I also tried the Forever Trim, Tone & Tighten Aloe Body Toning Kit.This was actually great fun and made my skin feel amazing. You start by cleansing your skin (in the shower or bath) and once dry, you are encouraged to do the measuring exercise at three points, your arms, upper legs and torso, and record your measurements. You then apply the Aloe Body Toner which is a warming and stimulating cream, and you can feel the warmth as you apply it. Now for the fun bit! You literally wrap your arms, torso below the bust and legs above the knees in cling film which you then leave in place for one hour. I watched TV whilst wrapped up not only in cling film, but in my dressing gown too! I could really feel the warming sensation of the body toner working under the layers of plastic. After one
hour, I gently cut away the wrap and rubbed any remaining cream into my skin. To gain maximum benefit, it is recommended that you should not wash for about 3 or 4 hours after the treatment. At this stage, you measure again and yes, all my measurements had reduced and my skin felt amazing. I was advised to repeat this process at the start and end of the cleansing period which I did. This treatment works particularly well in conjunction with the Clean 9 programme, maximizing the effects as well as ensuring a little ‘me’ time, which is certainly a nice bonus too! If you would like to give your body a real treat, start by calling Claire or Gilles for a chat. Their contact details can be found in the advert here and I am sure they will be delighted to hear from you and answer any questions you may have. Thank you both very much for letting me try this amazing programme. I am feeling good!

Spring into Life
Many of us are keen gardeners, and at the first sniff of Spring, we know exactly what to do to ensure our gardens thrive – feeding, weeding, pruning, planting … How many of us give our lives the same attention? Apart from New Year’s Resolutions (Bah! Humbug!), we tend to move through the year(s) without much thought for how we are evolving. Today, we’re going to use the garden as a metaphor – so think about your life as it is now as though it were a garden. Where are you now? Ask yourself: What is growing and what is dying back? What am I nurturing and what am I neglecting? What needs weeding out? Are there things there that don’t belong? Is there enough colour / variety / interest in all areas? Is the balance right overall? Is it receiving the care it needs? Do I love being in it? What would I like it to look like “in full bloom”? Spend time to picture your ideal life. Where do you want to go? This is the garden makeover! List 3-5 key goals: make them specific, ambitious and give them a time frame. Let’s translate this into a plan of action. Take one of your goals and work backwards to find all the steps it will take to make it happen. E.g. in order to get my book published, I
need to send it to a literary agent; in order to send it, I need to finish it; in order to finish it, I need to start it; in order to start it, I need to organise my writing time and space ... . This process leads to first steps. Now plan those first steps, with timescale, resources, progress. Do the same for the other goals. The small print: When you create goals, listen for your inner critic! What is he or she saying? (“You’ll never manage that …”, “You’re too old / too young …”, “What do you know about X, Y or Z?”) We have choice at every point in our lives. Every time we go one way, we aren’t going in the other – so focus is very important. Remember to connect with the WHY – what’s important to you about making this change? Make your commitment public, if only to one trusted ally.
Keep growing
