Welcome to our

SEPTEMBER ISSUE

I hope you all enjoyed a great summer. We had a lovely break here at the office and we are all feeling refreshed and raring to go again! It’s the time of year for new school shoes and pencil cases, for some to start school and for some to leave, for many older students to fly the nest and head to pastures new, time of many changes.. We wish you all lots of luck with your new adventures! Weybridge Male Voice Choir have an Autumn concert coming up which we are delighted to tell you all about in this issue –there will be some pretty impressive guests taking part in that, find out more within. I really enjoyed chatting to a very nice gentleman with a very well known voice during the summer. I met up with David ‘Kid’ Jensen who lives locally, we shared coffee and chatted about his action packed career. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoyed hearing all about it! David has kindly agreed to write a regular music column for Essential Esher. I am really looking forward to that starting in our next month. For all you animal lovers out there, we are delighted to share the heartwarming story of the rescue of Susie-Belle. Be sure to grab your tissues first though.

WEYBRIDGE MALE Weybridge Male Voice Choir - Autumn Concert

Saturday 4th October at 8.00 p.m. With Special guests ‘All The King’s Men’

Catholic Church of Christ Prince of Peace, Portmore Way, Weybridge KT13 8JD Since their dynamic young Musical Director Johnny Kilhams took the baton in April this year, the ever-popular Weybridge Male Voice Choir has gone from strength to strength. Our Spring Concert in May ranks among the choir’s very best and showed the choir near the top of their game; the audience loved all of it.

Now there is another chance to see and hear the choir in the great acoustics of Weybridge’s Catholic Church of Christ Prince of Peace on Saturday 4th October. Nearly everyone loves the variety of Male Voice choir singing, with its spine-tingling four part harmonies and great contrasts from quiet unaccompanied pieces to full-throated choruses. At the time of writing, the programme is not yet finalised but it is certain to include Spirituals, Songs from the Shows, Popular songs, and Sacred music ranging from the haunting quiet Ave Maria to a rousing Welsh hymn or two; and several songs new to our repertoire, including a beautiful new arrangement of Deep River. There will be many old favourites, of course, but each with new and exciting tone and shape so that they all seem fresh. So entertainment and variety well sung; plus show-casing surprise musical talents from the choir members - including a drum solo’

VOICE CHOIR

If we perform as we did in May, amongst the whole choir programme of 16 pieces there will not be a single dud; and there are not many concerts of anyone’s that you can say that about. Our guests will be All The King’s Men, the multi-award winning a cappella group based at King’s College London; and you really need to go to their web-site to see what a great attraction they will be.

And as you leave at the end of the concert we trust that yet again the collection buckets for Sam Beare won’t only be clanging with copper, they’ll be silently collecting notes!

With a retiring collection for Sam Beare Hospice

CAR REVIEW Marriages, so the saying goes, are made in Heaven. Well not the one I am about to describe! The one for which I was only too happy to be matchmaker - Italy was its setting. The pairing, a handsome macho eyecatcher and a real stunner of style and elegance, made for a memorable link I shall treasure for a good while. The pairing? Beauty and the beast. The beast? A Jaguar F-type. The beauty? The exquisite Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on the water’s edge of Bellagio, Lake Como. I drove the mightily powerful Jaguar to Italy with Trophy Wife who was on duty at a Milan fashion show buying for her boutique and we opted for a stopover at the Serbelloni. And if the unashamedly admiring glances the F-type stirred in its show-off setting parked in front of the ritzy Serbelloni were anything to go by it was the perfect match! There is no doubt in my mind that the new F-for-fabulous Jaguar is the best car they have made for decades. A hark back to the glory days of the resonant E-type, with its trombone-sized exhausts, it heralds a signature tune of sound to thrill. For my money, quid-for-quid, mph-formph,mpg-for-mpg , the eagerly responsive and utterly safe F-type, as good looking and

comfy as they come, is just the car to rival the twice-as-pricey Ferraris and Astons. It begs the question: why pay an absolute fortune for a car whose performance and style can be equalled for a fraction of the cost of the so-called, mainly foreign, supercars? The F’s responses to my urgent demands for quick overtaking bursts on the autoroutes and its balance along the dodgy narrow lakeside lanes were real confidence boosters. In a choice between the V6S - my tester and the V8,I’d go for the more economical V6S which strikes the best balance and has all the kit and technology you need for a few grand less. I have owned three E-types, one after the other, and if I’d been blessed with the foresight to hold onto them and sell them at today’s value you wouldn’t be reading this because I wouldn’t have been around to write it! I’d be permanently ensconced in the Michelin-starred Serbelloni, with its mountain and lake view restaurant and movie star guests like George Clooney, with TW...

Mr DJ...

I recently enjoyed chatting to a charming man who has a very well known and distinctive voice! A voice which in fact, I am sure many of you would recognise in an instant and one which could so often be heard in my car, my kitchen and at my friends houses!in my formative years.

The owner of this famous voice was none other than Mr David Jenson. Formally known as the DJ David Kid Jensen, David and his family have lived happily in Esher for 37 years and as we ordered our coffee we started exchanging thoughts on the lovely local restaurants and also some of our favourite dog walking spots! It turns out that actually, we both enjoyed talking about our dogs quite a lot! However I felt there were probably other subjects we should cover for the purpose of our feature! So we moved the conversation along & started to chat about David’s amazing career and some of the fascinating people he’s met along the way... That voice/accent I mentioned earlier originates from Vancouver, where David grew up. At school he enjoyed public speaking, and probably started honing his announcing skills even then as president of the Student Council. He also played the trumpet and a little piano but although he loved music and knew he wanted to be involved, becoming a musician wasn’t his calling. When an opportunity to present and make announcements on a classical radio station came up, he jumped at the chance! The show was sponsored by a local funeral director, and announcements took the form of funeral details and arrangements with regard to flowers or donations! The show was

rather strangely named ‘Music for dinning’ I’m sure you can guess what I thought David was going to say it was called! It was here that David met a former Radio Caroline DJ and through this meeting another opportunity arose for David to move on and present a Teen Scene show. At this stage he was still only 16 or 17 years old! During this time David began to really enjoy being a DJ and having been inspired by seeing a scrap book of a fellow presenter showing a whole selection of famous musicians he’d met, he felt it was time to take action. He took a Gap year from his education and started by sending out a ten minute demo tape to a handful of radio stations, including Radio One and Radio Luxembourg. Within a few days Radio Luxembourg came back to him with a job offer on the condition that he could start within the next 96 hours! He packed his bag and off he went! It was here he acquired the nick name ‘David Kid Jenson’ due to the fact that he was the youngest DJ in Europe. Paul Burnett was the name giver but I’m sure neither of them knew just how long it would stick around! Noel Edmonds was also starting out at Luxembourg at the time, he was about 19. In fact all three DJs ended up

working at Radio One later in their careers. From here David’s career really took off ... It wasn’t long before he could be heard presenting regularly on Radio One. In 1980 an offer from the head of CBS in Atlanta caught his interest, so along with his wife Gudrun and young family, he headed off on another adventure! This job was connected to CNN and Turner Broadcasting and although it was a very exciting time and provided an amazing life style for the family, it wasn’t long before they all missed the UK. Offers from the UK soon came, following a stint on Radio 4 presenting a Religious affairs programme which David found fascinating, he was soon being invited back to Radio One. It was at this time that David formed a firm friendship with one of my own personal heroes, the amazing Mr John Peel. The two formed a great team and went on to co-host live screenings of Top of the Pops regularly. After a while a new exciting London station was beckoning. The early days of Capital Radio have left David with so many fantastic memories ... He worked alongside many great radio presenters such as Kenny Everett, Michael Aspel, Roger Scott and Graham Dene to name but a few. In the early days the DJ’s chose their own play lists and David loved the freedom to promote so many new sounds. Over the years he has interviewed virtually all the big names, even touring for a week with The Rolling Stones; interviewing The Beatles and watching them perform on the roof of their Savile Row HQ in London. Presenting a review show with guests George Harrison and Michael Jackson was one highlight for sure! Another, was when on tour with The Rolling Stones their plane

was grounded due to ice and as a result they all got out and played football together to pass the time! David said he remembers thinking ‘If my mates could see me now! Playing football on a snowy runway with The Rolling Stones!’ ‘Kid Jensen’s ‘chart show was very well regarded in the industry; apparently Kenny Everett recorded every single chart show David presented. He neatly labeled them all and filed them in order in his home recording studio! A true compliment indeed. David said that he was always surprised to find out that massive stars like Jimmy Hendrix & Bill Wyman listened to his shows. He said he was glad he didn’t know at the time or he’d have been so nervous! These days David has a slightly quieter time, enjoying life in Surrey with his family. He still keeps his hand in and recently presented shows on Surrey & Sussex Radio. I really enjoyed meeting David Jensen, he is a genuinely charming guy with so many interesting stories to tell. Very kindly, he has offered to write a regular music column for The Weybridge Flyer Magazine - I’m delighted! Look out next month for the first of his insightful inclusions.

Thank you so much for your time David it really was a pleasure sharing coffee with you.

Saving Susie-Belle In a newly released book, “Saving Susie-Belle” Cobham author, Janetta Harvey tells the moving true story of how she gave a rescued miniature schnauzer, Susie-Belle a loving new home. Susie-Belle was saved from the horrific puppy farming industry and the book is not only a celebration of Susie-Belle’s survival and new life it is also an investigation into the terrible hidden world of breeding puppies for cash.

For over six years Susie-Belle had been trapped in a life of misery as someone’s commodity, a puppy farm breeding bitch, tied up in the back of a filthy agricultural shed, never seeing the outside world, receiving little or no care, experiencing neglect to a horrifying degree. When she was found, her body was so frail, thin and abused that it was thought she would not survive long. Her entire life had been about producing puppies, to be sold to dealers who in turn sold her babies to unwitting puppy buyers via online ads, or in pet shops, or from the boot of a car. All these are outlets used by dealers in puppies from commercial breeding places. Puppies are an easy source of cash for the breeders and dealers. They are seen as nothing more. The parent dogs, like SusieBelle are kept in cruel confinement for years, until they are so worn out or sick, that they can no longer produce the goods. Then, and only then do they leave captivity and not always into the safe arms of rescuers. For Susie-Belle, peace came before death as she is one of the lucky ones, that is, if we consider surviving years of loneliness, pain and terror as lucky. For she was rescued, lifted out of the dark and grubby hidden nightmare that is puppy farming and brought to safety. After spending six months in a loving foster home in Berkshire, where she underwent essential veterinary care, including sight-saving cataract surgery, eventually, Susie-Belle arrived to live with Janetta and her husband Michel in Cobham.

Now she shares a peaceful home with her two schnauzer sisters and experiences nothing less than complete loving daily care. Where once she was a scabby, nameless creature, she now has a beautiful name and life these days is good - as good as it can possibly be. Never again will it be anything less for this gentle soul who has suffered at the hands of humans who value commercial profits more than life itself. At rescue SusieBelle was severely underweight, now she lives in a home where her diet gets more attention than many humans give their own – Michel is a chef and Janetta is an enthusiastic foodie and they share abundant culinary joy with Susie-Belle. Travelling regularly to France, accompanied by SusieBelle and her canine sisters, camping round the UK, meeting other dogs up and down the country, the book tells the story of SusieBelle’s first year out of the dark and on the road to recovery. “Saving Susie-Belle” is published by John Blake and is available in all good bookshops and a Kindle edition. Following the tremendously successful book launch party hosted by the very dog friendly Cobham Bookshop on 2nd February, signed copies are available there located at 12 Anyards Road, Cobham. To find out more about puppy farming and to keep up to date with Susie-Belle’s life, follow her on twitter @SusieBSchnauzer, her blog susiefoodie.blogspot.co.uk or find Susie-Belle Schnauzer on Facebook.

GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY C L I M B I N G U P T H E WA L L S

Ivy is one of the most misunderstood plants around. Love it or loathe it, most gardens I visit have masses of the stuff. If you make it your friend, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Ivys are evergreen, climbing and trailing plants suitable for growing up walls and fences, or used as ground cover. Choose one of the all green leafed cultivars, and they will thrive in those hostile areas such as deep shade where other plants flatly refuse to grow. What’s more, if you would like some leaf colour and pattern interest, you’ll be spoilt for choice –green/deep red, green/white, green/ bright yellow, and so on. And that’s before you start looking at the size and shape of the leaf itself. With such a long string of attributes, why oh why is the most frequent question about ivy – how do I get rid of it? OK, so when you plant it, it remains fairly well-behaved for the first year, but after that it will romp away, clinging, climbing and generally behaving like an unruly teenager. I use that word ‘teenager’ on purpose, as it is the hook on which I hang my revealing story on how to handle a seemingly out of control plant. Heavens, I’m now beginning to sound like a counsellor! There are age stages of ivy on the one plant – juvenile and adult growth. The juvenile leaf, for the most part, will be triangular and lobed in shape. The adult form is where the plant ceases to climb, and pretends to be a tree. The leaf shape is the same colour, but is a more oval-ish

shape. It also produces yellowish green flowers (great for insects), which then develop into berries (great for birds). The juvenile growth produces its own adventurous roots to stick onto the wall or fence, so you don’t have to provide it with trellis or other support. The thug behavior begins when the plant stems wander off the wall. Check it at this stage, and prune off this wayward growth. If you cut an adult stem almost back to the point where the adult growth starts, it will resprout its adult form. You will have a screen of wonderful flowers and berries on stems that are less than 5cm (2in) long. When it’s done to perfection, this is truly a wonderful sight. Put up with the unruly teenage years, and the adult will reward you all year round and for years to come. Now where have I heard that before? A Good Read Armand Wadsworth

One of my many missions as an independent bookseller is to help introduce the life changing joys of books and reading to children. Infants, toddlers, growing children, young adolescents, young adults; they all need to be dissuaded from losing their minds in technology (TV, computers, all sorts of hand held devices) and encouraged to immerse themselves in books. We help to do this by recommending the very best children’s literature to suit all ages, genders, abilities and tastes. But we could always do better. Do you know our children’s section in Weybridge Books? What improvements would you like to see to help you or your children to enjoy the quest for the perfect book? Could we do more for young adults? Let me know at books@weybridgebooks.co.uk. I recently spent a couple of weeks on a safari holiday in Namibia, South West Africa. It is such a vast and beautiful country with a magnificent geography: mountains, deserts, savannah and a world heritage coastline. As many of us do, I brought with me a stack of books to read during those tranquil days in the sun. Unfortunately we had such a terrific itinerary that I did not read the half of them. They were all set in Africa. Some I had read before. The Grass Is Singing by Doris Lessing. The Life And Times of Michael K by J. M. Coetzee, The Catastrophist by Ronan Bennet, Brazzaville Beach by William Boyd. These are all novels but I also had with me The Sheltering Desert by Henno Martin. Threatened with Internment for the duration of World War II, two

young German geologists, Henno Martin and Hermann Korn, sought refuge in the Namib Desert and lived a Robinson Crusoe existence for two and a half years. How they mastered their situation, what they did, thought and observed are the subject of The Sheltering Desert. It’s a sort of extreme Ray Mears book. Do you take books that are set in your destination when you travel? Come and talk to me and I’ll recommend something for your holiday in Spain or Finland or Belfast! I returned home at the beginning of June, just in time for the invasion of the Rainbow Loom craze. You must have seen these things. A Malaysian crash test engineer (I kid you not) was observing his daughter weaving together a series of elastic bands into a bracelet and he hit upon the idea of creating a toy loom for rubber-band crafting. Well, this has gone viral and even I wear a band created by my daughter. I’m delighted to inform you that we are keeping up with demand at Weybridge Books. Starter kits and all the latest colours and glow varieties are in stock. William Hussey is a writer of horror fiction for children. He recently hosted an event at St George’s College where he scared the wits out of a bunch of youngsters. They loved it! You too can scare your loved ones with a copy of Haunted. In the novel he imagines the discovery of the legendary Ghost Machine, allegedly invented by Edison to have

Books Bought conversations with the dead. William is also available for school events. On the Road Bike. The Search For a Nation’s Cycling Soul by Ned Boulting. The author has noticed something. It’s to do with bikes. They’re everywhere. And so are their riders. Some of these riders seem to be sporting sideburns and a few of them are winning things. Big things. Now Ned wants to know how on earth it came to this. And what, exactly is ‘this’. In On the Road Bike, Ned Boulting asks how Britain became so obsessed with cycling. His journey takes him from the velodrome at Herne Hill to the Tour of Britain at Stoke-on-Trent via Bradley Wiggins, Chris Boardman, David Millar (and David’s mum), Ken Livingstone, both Tommy Godwins, Gary Kemp (yes, him from Spandau Ballet) and many, many more. The result is an amusing and personal exploration of the austere, nutty soul of British cycling. Here is a quick synopsis of some of the best books to be published in September: The Bucket by Allan Ahlberg – The creator of some of our most popular children’s books tells of his own extraordinary childhood The Century Trilogy: Edge of Eternity by Ken Follett – the conclusion of his epic trilogy The Children Act by Ian McEwan – The new novel from Mr McEwan Going off Alarming by

Book Voucher to WIN see p47 Danny Baker – The second volume of his autobiography covering amongst other things, Daz commercials & hit radio shows The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd – the new novel from the author of The Secret Life of Bees No Safe House by Linwood Barclay – the sequel to the massively successful No Time For Goodbye Us by David Nicholls – the much anticipated new novel from the author of One Day Walking Home by Clare Balding – a witty love letter to the British More Fool Me by Stephen Fry – a further chapter in the life of Stephen Fry And the best books for children this September are: In Bloom by Matthew Crow – comparisons between this book and The Faults In Our Stars will be inevitable as this novel deals with a similar subject matter. But this book too stands in a class all of its own. Brillant and totally engaging. For young adults Dragons at Crumbling Castle & Other Stories by Terry Pratchett – short stories that will introduce a new generation of readers to Pratchett’s witty and wonderful writing Ages 7+ Goth Girl & the Fete Worse Than Death - Ada is back with the hilarious award winning sequel to Goth Girl & The Ghost of a Mouse. 9+

MEDICAL MATTERS!!

D I A B E T E S & E X E R C I S E Exercise goes hand in hand with diet in the management of diabetes. This is one factor we know that can make an astounding impact on insulin resistance. Just 15 minutes of exercise can re- sensitise your body to use your insulin more efficiently for several hours. Personally I have witnessed significant improvements in diabetes control with a relatively modest increase in exercise with some of my patients. Most people however groan when exercise is mentioned & seem to assume that I mean long & boring (to some!) sessions at an expensive Gym. Not at all! I try to actively dissuade patients from joining the Gym unless they particularly want to. What we are talking about is really just moving more, being more active, getting off the bus a stop early, taking the stairs instead of the lift .....things we are all aware of. This makes a difference . However what this doesn’t necessarily achieve is a good cardiovascular workout. Even so there are some simple ways of achieving this too. We should all be aiming for 15-20 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week whereby our heart rate is raised & maintained for that time. Housework, walking to work, taking a walk at lunchtime all can make an impact. Make your exercise work for you. Exercise can also energise us, lift our mood, lower our blood pressure. A little word of advise though. If you are being treated with insulin or Gliclazide just be aware that an increase in exercise may lower your blood sugar level too much & you may need some advise on how to best manage this please speak to your GP or Nurse if you experience any problems. ON CLOUD 9: CELEBRATING NINE GLORIOUS YEARS OF SONG WITH ONE OF SURREY’S

LARGEST & MOST SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY CHOIRS

To mark the ninth anniversary of their first-ever rehearsal and to celebrate their immense success, Elmbridge Choir will be performing a very special concert: ‘On Cloud 9’, with a programme of the choir’s all-time favourite songs, chosen by the members: from Queen to Bette Midler, Gilbert and Sullivan to West End Showstoppers, from choral greats to pop and the lively rhythms of Africa. ‘’On Cloud 9’ - that sums up just how we feel!’ says Cliff van Tonder, Founder and Musical Director of Elmbridge Choir. ‘We are incredibly proud to have reached this milestone, and would like to invite all our friends, families and supporters from the last nine years to this concert. Of course we’d love to see some new faces too! We will be recalling wonderful musical memories and magical times from our very first rehearsal to our most recent. And we’ll be looking forward to the next nine years!’

Weybridge Flyer - What are you waiting for?

Coaching is a process of deepening awareness and forwarding the action. It is often a gradual process as clients uncover beliefs that have been holding them back, change their thinking and do things they never thought they could do. However, every once in a while, magic happens in the space of a single session. Re-location to Dorset offered John the chance of a fresh start. He wanted to find ways to focus his thoughts on developing energised, positive ideas to help him live the life he wanted, the way he wanted. Our conversation moved from stuckness to frustration to identity to yearning. Forty minutes later, John knew exactly what he wanted to do: create beautiful art through photography. Then he did what so many of us do: he pushed his dream into the future. “I’ll get back to my art when we’ve moved house.” “What are you waiting for?” I asked. “Do it now!” “OK. But first, I have to buy a decent camera,” John said. Usually, coaching is led by the client; it’s the client’s agenda, pace and decision. Sometimes, though, we coaches have to put our foot down. I challenged John: “Take them this week with your phone camera.” Two days later, John emailed me three stunning photographs taken at Portland Marina with his daughter’s camera. Here’s one of them...

You can see more of John’s work at www. johnmillsartography.com, on https://www. facebook.com/JOHNMILLSARTOGRAPHY and at the b-side multimedia festival on the Isle of Portland, Dorset from 5 – 12th September. I feel deeply privileged to do the work I do, and my clients’ testimonials are the icing on the cake. Here’s John’s: “Sonia helped me to achieve clarity and confidence during a period of considerable change in my life. I was in need of focus, to ‘unstick’ myself and move forward with new plans. Working with Sonia put me on the right path. She allowed me to express my ideas, my thoughts, and myself, and provided the tools, support and motivation I needed, enabling me to see solutions and begin the journey that will lead to fulfilling my personal goals. Sonia is insightful, inspirational and an absolute delight to work with. I couldn’t recommend her highly enough.”
