From the EDITOR
HELLO WEYBRIDGE The vibrant autumn colours seem to have arrived a little earlier than normal this year, maybe that’s been caused by the scorching summer? Anyway, it’s looking very pretty around the village and the conkers will soon be falling. Let’s enjoy the last few weeks of lighter evenings, before the time change slips us into early darkness...(Clocks go back on Sunday 28th October) With Dementia touching so many of ours lives, it is great to hear that the Weybridge Dementia Alliance are actively seeking support members; please see page 16 if you would like to know more. We have two great competitions this month; the chance to win a family ticket to attend ‘The Railway Children’ at The Leatherhead Theatre as part of their up-coming Leatherhead Rep Season. See page 30 for that. Secondly, a great little book for motorbike racing enthusiasts! Written by our very own Look Local motor-head, Ted Macauley (who kindly writes our much enjoyed car review each month) about legendary Mike ‘the Bike’ Hailwood’s return to the TT. Read our review and see details of how to win on page 34. Good luck to all who enter. There’s other news on a life saving Defibrillator unit in Weybridge and coverage of a wonderful Charity event held by Neptune. You are also invited to a 70th Birthday celebration by the ‘Music in Hospitals’ charity! That’s on page 26. Wow! What a buzzing place Weybridge is ! All this and lots more within, I hope you enjoy our October issue. Until next time, take care,
Ros

WEYBRIDGE DEMENTIA ACTION ALLIANCE
St. James Church, Brooklands Museum and Handelsbanken are all founder members of the Weybridge Dementia Action Alliance. Our DAA has recently joined up with Elmbridge Borough Council to encourage other local businesses to support this initiative. From experience we know that Weybridge is Dementia Friendly but we want those living with dementia, and their carers, to be aware of which businesses have undertaken the Dementia Friendly Awareness sessions and are therefore better placed to help when required.
Our aim is to recruit as many businesses as possible, in Weybridge, to the DAA. Businesses will have to commit to sending their staff on a 60 minute awareness session then they can display the DAA logo in their window. Seeing the logo should reassure a person that, if they become disorientated or confused, this is where they will be able to get help. Further details are on the leaflet below and if you would like any more information, or if you would like to join the alliance, please do contact: Annabelle Yeomans on stjamesweybridgedaa@btinternet.com.

MAKING YOUR MONEY
WORK HARDER. Hi everyone, we are pleased to say that we have moved office from 74 Queens Road, Hersham to 26-28 Molesey Road Hersham (as you turn into Waitrose). If you would like to have a chat about any tax or accounting issues please pop in. Elaine & Keith Jones run the Weybridge office of TaxAssist Accountants. Each issue, Elaine provides advice on recent change in tax law, or addresses a topical financial issue.
Registering for Self Employment and CIS
Q.
My work in the building industry involves a mixture of short periods of work for an employer under PAYE and periods of self-employment within the same year. Is it necessary for me to register for self employment on a contractby-contract basis? You will initially have to register as self employed. HMRC will then issue you a 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). You also need to register as a subcontractor for CIS (Construction Industry Scheme). Contractors you work for will use your UTR to verify you for the 20% deduction rate. If you don’t register for CIS, you will suffer 30% tax deductions from contractors. Until you decide not to do any self employed work at all, you can stay registered as self employed. Your tax return will include your self employment and employment income for the year, and you will also need to show what PAYE you have suffered and what CIS has been deducted. You do not need to deregister as self employed every time a contract comes to an end. But HMRC will expect a tax return from you annually, until you advise them that you have ceased self employment entirely.
A.
Clothing purchased for work purposes
Q. A.
I am a self employed builder and I prepare my own tax return. Am I allowed to claim the cost of clothing that I wear to work? The purchase of general clothing is not an allowable deduction for tax, as it could be worn for non-work purposes - the fact that the trader may choose not to wear the clothing for nonwork purposes is irrelevant. Therefore the only items of clothing that can be claimed for are those which fall into the categories of protective clothing and/or uniforms. As you work in the building trade, the cost of steel capped boots, fluorescent vests, hard hats, protective gloves and goggles could be claimed for, as could the cost of any overalls purchased. You would not, however, be able to claim for general clothing such as jeans and trainers. The legislation does allow for claims for the cost of uniforms though, so if you had T-shirts displaying your business details, those could be deducted for tax purposes. Late P11D
Q. A.
I have missed the deadline for submitting my P11Ds, what penalty can I expect? The P11D(b) and copies of the accompanying P11Ds must be filed with HM Revenue & Customs by 6th July; whether you file online or on paper. If they remain outstanding by 19th July, penalties will start to apply at a rate of £100 per 50 employees for each part- or full month that the returns are late. Any Class 1A National Insurance that is due must be paid to HMRC by 19th July (or 22nd July if paying electronically). Late payments of Class 1A National Insurance will be subject to interest and late payment penalties may also arise if payment remains outstanding for more than 30 days. There are additional penalties for incorrect returns.

Public Access Defibrillator FOR WEYBRIDGE
Medical research shows that the first minutes after a patient has collapsed with a cardiac arrest are crucial and every second counts to give them the best chance of survival. A public access defibrillator means that everyone in the community has the opportunity to give immediate lifesaving treatment whilst waiting for the paramedics. A defibrillator delivers an electric shock via pads placed on the patient’s chest in order to restart the heart. These devices are becoming increasingly common in towns and villages and are often located in phone boxes, sports clubs and supermarkets. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St James Church Weybridge has installed a public access defibrillator on the outside wall of the church hall facing Weybridge main car park. This can be accessed 24 hours a day and is light and portable meaning it can be easily carried to the victim . The large yellow box is positioned under a flood light by the entrance door of
24 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
the hall making it easy to locate. The box is locked for security and to maintain the device at the correct temperature. However, in an emergency, dialling 999 enables the ambulance service to advise of the code required to open the box. The defibrillator is simple to use and a video on the machine talks the first aider through every step of the process meaning that a member of the public with no experience can feel confident that they are using it correctly. As the device is registered with the ambulance service, the call handler can give advice over the phone whilst the paramedics are on their way. Next time you are in Weybridge car park, why not take a few moments to check on its location, you never know when it might be needed. St James PCC would like to thank Waitrose and The Friends of Weybridge Hospital for their support in this project.
NEPTUNE WEYBRIDGE CHARITY EVENT FOR THE CLUBHOUSE PROJECT
Neptune Weybridge welcomed 100 people to its showroom in Weybridge high street on Thursday 9th August, for an evening of shopping, food and wine. And what a success it turned out to be! With 8 boutiques offering clothes & accessories, jewellery, skincare, artwork, ceramics there was a wonderful array of items to purchase, all donating proceeds to The Clubhouse Project. The Quince Tree Café from Clifton Nurseries delighted everyone with delicious flatbreads and brownies while Cellar One made sure glasses of fizz were filled. The evening was enjoyed by all participants and helped to raise valuable charity funds as well as some great networking opportunities for the charity and local businesses. Neptune Weybridge would like to thank everyone who came as well as our stallholders for helping to make the evening such a great success and lots of fun. Music in Hosptials & Care (MiHC)
Music in Hospitals & Care (MiHC) is a national charity and this year celebrates 70 years of creating joy through interactive live music for people receiving care or treatment in healthcare settings. MiHC organises annually some 5,000 live performances across the UK. Each music session is presented by small groups of professional musicians who have been carefully selected for their high standard of musicianship and communication skills. These qualities enable them to relate not just to the physical needs but also the psychological and social needs of their audience. Their encouraging and empathic approach can stimulate all the senses. The benefits of a live performance are immeasurable. A stroke patient unable to speak sings along to a familiar song. The child attached to a heart monitor whose heart rate begins to return to normal as she listens to her favourite song being sung by her bedside. Medical staff often tell us how patients blossom during a MiHC concert. It is wonderful to watch people who seem expressionless begin to sit upright, their heads lift and their eyes begin to smile. Music is the most emotive of the arts and has great therapeutic properties. It has the capacity of tuning into our deepest feelings as well as having the power to break down social and cultural barriers. A live
26 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
performance can help reduce levels of anxiety, pain and depression as well as providing a great socialising activity. MiHC musicians bring more than just music to their audiences. They help to promote wellbeing, improve memory recall and stem mental decline. They do not provide miracle cures but they sensitively help to ‘bring the person out of the patient.’ Do join us to celebrate our 70th birthday: • Sunday, 28th October 3.00pm MiHC’s 70th Birthday Celebration with Toby Spence (Tenor), Christopher Glynn (piano) and Orpheus Papafilippou (violin) with Rimantas Vingras (piano) at Hendall Manor Barns, Uckfield • Friday, 23 November 2.00pm “Cake and a Concert” at Riverhouse Barn, Walton-on-Thames Local carers, healthcare groups, care homes and people in the local community who otherwise feel isolated will be invited to enjoy high quality live music, dance, tea and cake together. • Tuesday, 4th December 7.30pm at Peace Memorial Hall, Ashtead– Soundbytes Choir, come along and enjoy songs from pop, gospels, musicals and more. Entrance free – donations to MiHC For further information please visit: www.mihc.org.uk

THEY DROVE ME
CRAZY IN ESHER! On Sunday 9th September at Sandown Park Golf Centre in Esher, David Smith from Wishing Well in Bookham, along with his wife Michelle, their friends Viv Barlow & Beverlie Isaacs, and Val Woodward & Sam Janes from the Princess Alice Hospice charity shop in Bookham and team held a charity Crazy Golf day to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Over a hundred people paid to play and along with a Winner’s Post tombola and a luxury raffle over £1300 was raised. Surrey Hills Community Radio station came along and entertained the players with a wide range of music throughout the event. www.surreyhillsradio.co.uk David Smith said “I am delighted with the success of the day. People have been so generous with their time, money and donations and this has enabled us to raise a great amount of money for this worthy cause” As always, Bookham businesses, too numerous to mention, were extremely generous in donating prizes. A special mention has to go to Georgia, Beverlie’s daughter, whose employer Willian Reed Business Media in Crawley www. william-reed.com donated an amazing array of wines and champagnes which no doubt contributed to the success of the raffles. Thanks also go to Sandown Park Golf Centre who generously provided the facilities free of charge and donated a whole raft of prizes to enable people to enjoy their amazing facilities on another visit. For more information about Crazy Golf and other activities at Sandown Park Golf Centre go to: www.sandownparkgolf.com David and the team want to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for making the day a great success.

As with many 1960s British theatres the auditorium seats are all on one steeply raked tier; unusually they are undivided by aisles, keeping the audience as a single unit. The auditorium is remarkably unaltered, with its original decor and its brick-tile walls with four expressive lighting slits curving out. Because of its thoughtful design and its relatively small number of seats, The Theatre is one of the most intimate and architecturally accomplished proscenium theatres of British modernism. GARDENING WITH AUNTIE PLANTY GARDEN LOOKING DULL
I was in a garden during the week where, standing on the back terrace, all I could see was green, green and more green - there were very few flowers. The garden owner assured me that her garden had looked brilliant in June, but going into autumn the garden had quite literally ‘switched off’. Standing at my own kitchen window this morning, this is what I was looking at … The tall and elegant Verbena bonariensis which I like for the way that you can see other stuff through its rigid stems. At the moment, it’s looking brilliant and was definitely the plant of Chelsea Flower show a few years ago. Garden designers like it for its ‘statement’. Then there’s a mass of sparkling white Japanese windflowers. I used to think this plant only liked dappled shade. Well, I tried it in my south facing front garden and it’s loving it. Moving down the garden, if you like lavender then you’ll like caryopteris, as its blue flower spikes are rather similar; and, different cultivars will give you a range of leaf colour. Another very useful late summerautumn addition to the garden is the cormous perennial crocosmia, with its tall sprays of vivid red, orange or yellow flowers on stems to around one metre. My pyracantha is already showing a mass of orange berries. I think this year is going to be a very good season for all berried plants, as we had just the right amount of rain at the right time, and lots and lots of

sunshine. I have a few clumps of penstemon dotted around the garden that are flowering their heads off at the moment. Penstemons come in a huge range of colours, and although mine is scarlet and white - probably ‘Polaris Red’ - you’ll not find a single yellow or orange one. My Callicarpa bodineiri is already showing an early flush of those bright purple glassy berries that will sparkle during the dark days of winter. I can forgive its rather ordinary leaves and flowers for the a-m-a-z-i-n-g winter display of purple glassy berries that the birds seem to leave alone; they eat red first, then orange, then yellow, and then white; I don’t know what a purple berry looks like to a bird , but it must be something akin to my attitude to purple carrots… And then I stopped listing my autumn fireworks, as I was still only half way down the garden and I have come to the bottom of this page. The point I’m making here is that with a careful choice of plants, it’s possible to have something interesting in the garden, no matter what time of year or what season it is. MIKE THE BIKE- AGAIN THE STORY OF MIKE HAILWOOD’S RETURN TO THE TT
I remember Mike Hailwood when he was motor car racing in Formula 1 in the early ’70’s. I was quite surprised when Ted sent us this book to review to discover that Mike “The Bike” Hailwood first found success racing motorcycles, well before his days in Formula 1. And this book is about his return to his first love - TT racing! Probably the most prestigious and certainly the most demanding road race in the world. He first raced motorcycles in 1957 at Oulton Park and went onto to have a spectacular career in Grand Prix motorcycling, also competing in 24 hours of Le Mans. But for me, his real achievements were in his Isle of Man TT racing. For example, he was the first man in the history of TT to win three races in the same week when he won in the 125cc, 250cc & 350cc. Whilst much has been written and documented about Mike Hailwood and his stellar career, this book, MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN is a personal tribute and tale by his great friend Ted Macauley, of his return to TT racing. After
an 11 year break in competitive motor cycle racing few believed he could make the grade. How wrong they were! Mike took the sport by storm winning the Formula 1 Class race! Mike the Bike -Again tells the story of his decision to return, his attempt to hatch the plans for his return with his friend Ted (but without his wife Pauline finding out!), his practice and training with the “modern” bikes, his spectacular return in ’78, the loss of his friend and colleague Tom Herron, just weeks before the ‘79 TT, his retirement -second time around; and his untimely death in 1981 in the most tragic of circumstances. The warmth of friendship shines out from this book. Well written, with love, humour and anecdotes that could only be told by someone who was there, this book is a must read. Bernie Ecclestone, a longtime friend of Ted Macauley’s writes: “Mike the Bike-Again is a fitting salute to his everlasting presence in the minds of all of us who were fortunate enough to see him race-and to know him”.
To be in with a chance to win a copy of MIKE THE BIKE -AGAIN answer the following question:
In which year did Mike Hailwood return to TT racing? Email your answer and your magazine area to: ros@looklocalmagazine.co.uk

VW CARAVELLE CAR REVIEW
It may look like a delivery van, but don’t be fooled, the VW Caravelle is a supreme people carrier with style and panache and plenty of disguised practicality. It ranks among the poshest of the posh mini-buses with a comfort level for seven people, however long their legs, giving them the spacious comfort of a living room three piece suite. And if your budget can stretch into Volkswagen’s asking price you will be rewarded with superb value for your hard-earned. The huge Caravelle, based on and developed as a descendant from the legendary and iconic Camper, is a VW with a status reaching far above that of a van with widows. It is a unique and distinctive crowd carrier with handy cabin facilities to cope cosily with a full house of travellers. If I am sounding like an enthusiast then, great, I’m getting the crucial message across. I have to say VW’s splendid reputation for meeting the needs and requirements of the fussiest customers is personified...yet again...in this oh-so-carefully considered and developed offering to its long-established fan base as well as being a lure to newcomers to the painstaking brand. It ain’t cheap, but it offers unrivalled space and versatility for the family gathering, including all their belongings and luggage in 775-litre load bay, and looking for economy and elbow room on the move. It is the perfect runaround with huge side windows that offer panoramic views for the lucky passengers. From
a driver’s standpoint, seated nice and high with great cinemascopic views, the punchy engines like the 2.0-litre TDI, with its seven gears auto box, ensures it has swift and smooth acceleration. It has all the trimmings and helps you would hope for and expect in a Volkswagen, including dials, five inch touch screen, digital radio and switches you’d recognise from the tried and tested Golf. Three climate control settings, tinted rear windows and roller blinds, help maintain a relaxed and comfortable coolness in the vast cabin. The second row of seats are swivelling captain’s chairs and adaptable enough for that area to revel into a lounge-like atmosphere. To add to the convenience and party mood for the passengers there is an optional folding table or shelves to create a bed for a nod-off. If you fancy, and you are on a house move or you have tons of Christmas shopping, you can remove all the seats and convert the spacious carrier into a van.Second thoughts - it would be just as well to slide the back end bench forwards to create the necessary space. If you are looking for a practical carrier with an enviable comfort zone and you have the readies to fork out then go for it. The Caravelle is a winner. Upper class. Specification: Price range £39,049-£51,579. My choice, the 2.0TDFI.Executive DSG. Power:150bhp. 0-62mph in 13.0 secs. MPG 47.1. Price £45,747. Warranty: three years unlimited mileage. By Ted Macauley

t u rkey a n d gu a ca mo l e b u rg e r s Ingredients Method
500g pack turkey thigh mince Good few dashes Tabasco sauce 1 red onion, ½ coarsely grated and ½ diced 1 lime, zest and juice 28g pack coriander, leaves and stalks separated, stalks finely chopped, leaves chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed or finely grated 1 Waitrose 1 Perfectly Ripe Large Avocado 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced 1 tbsp olive oil 4 monterey jack cheese slices 4 wholemeal or ciabatta rolls, halved and griddled or toasteds
1. Tip the turkey mince into a bowl and season. Add the Tabasco sauce, coarsely grated ½ onion, lime zest, coriander stalks and 1½ crushed or grated garlic cloves. Mix to combine, then shape into 4 patties, about 1cm thick. Put on a plate; set aside in the fridge. 2. Meanwhile, in a bowl, roughly mash the avocado with a fork and season. Stir in the remaining garlic, the juice of ½ lime and most of the coriander leaves; set aside. In another bowl, toss the pepper with the diced ½ onion and remaining juice of ½ lime; season and set aside. 3. Coat the burgers with a little oil. Fry in a hot frying pan (or on a griddle or barbecue) for 5 minutes. Flip and cook for 2 minutes, then top each with a cheese slice. Cook for 3 minutes more, until no pink meat remains and the juices run clear. Pile into the rolls with the guacamole, pepper mixture and remaining coriander.
Cook’s Tip Coarsely grating the onion is an easy way to incorporate it into the burger mixture without needing to chop it finely.

Inspiration! A TASTE OF MY OWN
MEDICINE As a coach, I can’t ask anything of my clients that I’m not prepared to do myself. Now, I don’t mean that to challenge a client to skydive, I need to throw myself out of a plane first! But I do mean that to be the kind of coach who can challenge my clients effectively and with integrity, I need to be able to challenge myself in a way that stretches me as a person and a coach in whatever area I need to grow. So, just before Christmas, I challenged myself and joined a theatre group. I have harboured a fascination with the stage since my childhood, but never had the confidence to do anything about it back then, or the courage to do so as an adult. Being on a stage, acting and behaving in ways that “weren’t me” would be scary. At first, it was exciting and within my comfort zone. We collaborated on the story lines and my writer-side felt safe and fulfilled. Then came the first challenge. I would have to learn lines! And it wasn’t just words: I needed to stick to the character’s accent, remember where to be on the stage, which direction I needed to be facing, how my character was feeling, and interacting with the other characters in the scene. And to put myself to the test in public?? That was crazy. What on earth was I thinking when I decided to do this? A few things kept me going. One was that I couldn’t let my fellow cast members down. Another was my value of professionalism: I always like to give my best to the things that matter. The last incentive was the sheer terror of disgracing myself in public. Now, as I write this, I have no way of knowing how it will all turn out, because the performances are next weekend, by which time this article will be in the
38 Looklocal Magazine - October 2018
clutches of the editor. But that’s not the point. The point is, I made the decision and I’m doing it. I was brought up to not attract attention to myself. What could be further from the messages of my childhood than getting emotional on stage in front of a hall full of strangers, and opening the scene with an unaccompanied song? This is a challenge in two parts: doing something scary for the sake of growing my courage muscle, and pushing past my comfort zone into my growth zone, (a place I ask my clients to be willing to go), in order to develop my confidence and presence in public. What would you do if you had the courage? Go on. I challenge you to do it!

WEYBRIDGE Libraries Week takes place between the 8–13 October to celebrate the nation’s much-loved libraries. It’s a week-long celebration to ensure that as many people as possible are inspired to visit a library, discover what’s on offer & encourage their friends & family to get involved. According to the Carnegie Trust, three out of every four people in the UK and Ireland say that libraries are important or essential to their community. However, only half of us have a current library card and less than half of those with a card have visited a library in the last twelve months. Why not visit your local Library this month to show your support and enjoy the benefits of FREE library membership. We offer so much more than books We also offer our customers free Wifi and access to computers with volunteer Digital Buddies available for support. We run regular activities for children including Rhymetimes, storytimes, craft events and a children’s reading group. We have regular events for adults too with weekly Scrabble and Knit and Natter clubs and a monthly Reading Group and Storytime for Adults. We also offer online services including free access to GoCitizen, TheoryTest Pro, Ancestry, Find my Past and the Britannica Library. Find out more at Weybridge Library or online at www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries. Too busy to visit us? Don’t worry you can still support us and share the benefits of library membership. Join online at www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries and your card will be posted to you. Then explore our amazing range of online resources whenever and wherever it suits you. With library membership you can access and borrow E-books and E-Audio books, browse popular digital magazines such as New Scientist, Newsweek and National geographic and read digital copies of daily national and international newspapers from your home, work or on your daily commute. It’s all free if you have a library card!
