Welcome Hello and welcome to the latest issue of Rotana. We are now well and truly into the new year and here at Rotana we are in the midst of a particularly exciting period, with a host of new openings scheduled across the region and further afield. This year alone, we plan to open 10 hotels, with new openings in the UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Morocco. We are also exploring new territories and in 2019 will open our first-ever hotels in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Tanzania. It is certainly an exciting time ahead for all of us at Rotana and we look forward to welcoming guests from all over the world in the coming months. There is so much to discover throughout the region and the wonderful weather makes it the perfect time to step outside and explore. For those wanting to find some of the Middle East’s hidden gems, turn to page 20 as we reveal the sometimes forgotten destinations that are full of wonder and beauty. KING’S DAY APR 27 · NETHERLANDS
A royal celebration that dates all the way back to 1885, King’s Day now marks the birth of King Willem-Alexander and is a chance for people across the Netherlands to show their pride in the Dutch Royal family. The biggest street party of the year, the colourful festival sees DJs performing in public squares, brightly decorated boats filling the canals and live music spilling onto the streets from cafés. Expect to see a sea of orange as locals and visitors alike dress in the colour to show their support for the Dutch Royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau.

One of Thailand’s biggest celebrations and an important event on the Buddhist calendar, this water festival marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. Locals and tourists also take to the streets to playfully splash water at each other, with the famous Khao San Road in Bangkok one of the best places to celebrate.

FATHIMA MOHIUDDIN The Dubai-based street artist is breathing new life into buildings throughout the UAE Having gained a BA in Art & Culture from the University of Toronto and an MA in Sociology from Goldsmith’s, University of London, Fathima Mohiuddin knew that once she returned to Dubai she wanted her art to be inclusive. Passionate about art’s social impact, she eventually founded the artist-run company The Domino and began to express herself through murals and on canvas. Now her work can be seen on public walls throughout Dubai. “There’s a certain freedom in painting in public spaces and on a big scale that I love and enriches my own life on a personal level. The fact that it makes art accessible to

First held in 1993 and taking place every two years, this contemporary art fair has showcased some exceptional talent. And this year is no different, with the 14th Sharjah Biennial featuring three unique exhibitions. Entitled ‘Leaving the Echo Chamber’ and curated by Zoe Butt, Omar Kholeif and Claire Tancons, the pieces explore the possibility of creating art when history is increasingly fictionalised. Start off right: Calamari Fritti “A firm favourite with customers, we focus on bringing out the true flavour of the squid. For this we use baby calamari which is deep fried in fine semolina and then served with some rucola, lemon and tartar sauce. It has a nice crunch and great flavour, and while it may be simple, the quality of the ingredients makes all the difference. We don’t even add salt when cooking, we just top it with sea salt flakes to enhance the flavour.”
“We are very proud of our pizza as even within Rotana we are the only restaurant that prepares them in this way. That is by fermenting the dough for a minimum of 48 hours, which ensures the pizza becomes very light and not heavy on the stomach at all. We make all 16 of our pizzas in this way, but this is the standout as it includes a host of ingredients that are used throughout Italy. The toppings include Italian chicken sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers and olives, all of which complement one another and create a pizza that is packed full of flavour.”
The big finish: Tiramisu “When it comes to desserts, we like to keep it simple and there are few dishes that beat a traditional Tiramisu. The recipe is very much how home cooks in Italy would make it, with ladyfinger biscuits, espresso coffee and creamy mascarpone cheese, all dusted with cocoa powder. It is the ideal end to any meal.”

More than meets the eye At first glance the capital of Bahrain may seem like a modern metropolis but beneath the surface there is a rich history just waiting to be explored

ith a skyline dominated by the daringly designed Bahrain World Trade Centre and no end of vast air-conditioned shopping malls, it is easy to think that Manama is merely a modern metropolis with little in the way of history or culture. The shiny capital certainly has all the hallmarks of Gulf prosperity, but beyond the glittering skyscrapers and modern architecture, you’ll discover nods to the city’s pearling past and a plethora of cultural attractions. Throw in a thriving art scene and it becomes clear that there is much more to Manama than first meets the eye.
DAY ONE Begin your trip by visiting the country’s most popular attraction, Bahrain National Museum, for an intriguing introduction to the kingdom. Within the striking complex are ancient artefacts that cover nearly 5,000 years of Bahrain’s history. These archaeological finds from the Dilmun civilisation provide a fascinating insight into what life was like when the country was a major trading port. The museum also boasts a natural history hall which focuses on Bahrain’s unique flora and fauna, while there are also numerous contemporary exhibitions of art and sculpture.
Providing another glimpse into the past, a trip to Manama Souq is an absolute must for any visitor to the capital. A warren of interconnected streets lined with vendors, the alleyways each boast their own unique sights, sounds and scents, making this an experience to remember. The place to go for those looking to haggle with traders and discover a truly unique souvenir, there are areas dedicated to fine gold jewellery, exotic spices perfumes and herbs. Take your time exploring the markets and wandering through the tight lanes, and make sure to stop off in order to drink chai and sample some shawarma.

DAY TWO A must visit for any thrill seeker, just half an hour outside the capital is Bahrain International Circuit where you can choose from one of the many track experiences. Try an exhilarating ride in one of the world’s most powerful drag racing cars or emulate modern-day F1 greats such as Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel by tackling the challenging circuit in a Radical SR3 sports car. For those who prefer two wheels instead of four, the Ducati riding experience lets you speed round the track on an immensely powerful Ducati Panigale 1299 S, an experience that will not soon be forgotten. Siwa Oasis, Egypt
Just 50 kilometres from the Libyan border, this remote oasis town is one of Egypt’s lesser-known treasures. Sitting about 25 metres below sea level and brimming with olive and palm trees, the fertile basin boasts a rich history. Originally part of ancient Libya, there are several sites that reflect on the area’s past, including the Temple of the Oracle of Amun – once visited by Alexander the Great, the Sahli Fortress and Cleopatra’s pool in which the legendary queen is said to have swam. There are also numerous natural attractions scattered throughout such as crystal-clear springs, sweeping sand dunes, salt lakes, mineral springs and palm groves.
Baatara Gorge, Lebanon
A truly remarkable sight to behold, Baatara Gorge, which is also known as the Cave of Three Bridges, dates back to the time of the dinosaurs. Found just 75 kilometres from Beirut in the municipality of Tannourine, this beautiful waterfall drops 255 metres into the Baatara Pothole, an ancient cave made of limestone that was formed more than 56 million years ago. Located on the famous Lebanon Mountain Trail, the best time to visit is in the spring when the snow covering Mount Lebanon begins to melt and cascades behind the three bridges down into the vast chasm. Only discovered by the western world in 1952, it is without doubt one of the most stunning waterfalls in the whole of the Middle East.

Separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates, this enclave of Oman is home to several small villages, dramatic mountain roads and beautiful fjords. This has led to the Musandam Peninsula being dubbed the ‘Norway of Arabia’. Accessible but still somewhat isolated, there are a number of ways to explore this picturesque peninsula, from navigating the rugged coastal road to a cruise on a traditional dhow. A number of local tour companies have transformed these fishing vessels for tourism and offer trips out onto the blue waters for dolphinspotting and snorkelling adventures. Alternatively, rent a four-wheel drive and head inland through the mountains where hidden among the valleys are a series of remote and beautiful beaches.

Wadi Mujib, Jordan
Located in the mountainous landscape to the east of the Dead Sea and stretching 70 kilometres, this spectacular chasm has been given the nickname, the ‘Grand Canyon of Jordan’. Known in biblical times as Arnon Valley, the canyon, which measures one kilometre in depth and is four kilometres wide, is home to more than 300 species of plants and numerous rare mountain animals. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi
One of the most popular tourist attractions in the UAE capital, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was commissioned to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Islamic world. Designed by Syrian architect Yousef Abdelky, it took more than a decade to construct and can accommodate in excess of 40,000 worshippers. Featuring striking domes and four
towering minarets, the interiors are equally as impressive, with the main prayer room featuring 96 columns clad with marble and inlaid with mother of pearl, as well as the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet – weighing a staggering 35 tonnes.
Jeddah Tower, Saudi Arabia
Previously known as Kingdom Tower and Mile-High Tower, this skyscraper is set to surpass Burj Khalifa as the tallest building in the world once completed in 2020. Under construction since 2013 and designed by Burj Khalifa architect Adrian Smith, it will be the first building in the world to reach the one-kilometre mark. One of the most striking details of the design is the 30-metre outdoor balcony, known as the sky terrace, which will only be accessible via a penthouse floor on level 157.

Museum of the future, Dubai
Bahrain World Trade Centre, Manama
Dominating the skyline of Manama, this two-tower structure marked an important turning point in sustainable construction when it became the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design. Shaped to look like a sail in a nod to Bahrain’s rich maritime history, the buildings work to channel the air flow through the gap between the towers, accelerating the wind passing through the turbines and generating between 11 and 15 percent of the tower’s total power consumption.

Shaping up to be one of the world’s most complex structures and set to open next year, the low-level building has been designed to look like an eye hollowed out in the middle. Featuring Arabic calligraphy inscribed on the building’s façade, the smooth exterior will be covered in 890 jointfree stainless steel and fibreglass panels, with the only horizontal surfaces in the building being the floors. A hugely ambitious project, it perfectly demonstrates how architecture in the emirates continues to evolve.

From Rive Gauche to rock chic, the Saint Laurent woman continues to the set herself apart 6

hen it comes to era-defining designers, few stand out as prominently as Yves Saint Laurent. A legend among even the most decorated creatives, the famed fashionista is credited by many as changing the face of contemporary fashion for women. Born in Algeria in 1936, Saint Laurent moved to Paris at the tender age of 17, eager to immerse himself in the industry he loved. He set up his own fashion label with Pierre Bergé in 1962 and by 1966 made the first of many career-defining moves when he became the first couturier to open a ready-towear boutique, Rive Gauche, in the French capital. That same year also saw the debut of one of his most iconic pieces, Le Smoking – the first women’s tuxedo. By embracing the idea that the practicality of men’s clothing could also be applied to women’s fashion, without losing any sense of seductiveness,

Saint Laurent forged a new fashion frontier perfectly capturing the move towards gender equality and female empowerment. He said at the time: “For a woman, the tuxedo is an indispensable garment in which she will always feel in style, for it is a stylish garment and not a fashionable garment. Fashions fade, style is eternal.” And how right he was! Diversity was another important element to both the man and the brand, with Saint Laurent among the first to include models of colour. Women such as Iman, Katoucha Niane and Dalma Callado became his well-documented muses. In recent years the brand has continued to be at the forefront of several more fashion shakeups. The appointment of Hedi Slimane in 2012 led to the hotly debated label change – from Yves Saint Laurent to Saint Laurent Paris. Slimane’s debut collection caused similar controversy as he

further honed his penchant for slim-hipped models, androgynous clothing and the gritty grunge vibe that he was so well-known for at Dior Homme. The collection ushered in a new wave of masculinity at the brand and although initially slated, this, and the collections that followed, turned out to be a huge commercial success. Today it is Anthony Vaccarello’s turn at the creative helm. Under his charge the brand continues to thrive, with Vaccarello adding a heightened sense of glam to the rock aesthetic Slimane left behind. Speaking at his debut show, Vaccarello said of his Saint Laurent woman: “She’s certainly not bourgeois or classic.” His preference for razor-sharp designs and boldly slashed silhouettes, that combine a sense of elegance and streetwise, once again showed the house’s unique ability to perfectly decode fashion’s current mood. Since joining in 2016 the Belgium-born designer has shown uncompromising consistency and his well-tuned party-ready attire is both enviable and aspirational. Declaring he had truly found his footing at the fashion empire, he chose the Spring/ Summer 2018 show to reveal his grand ambitions for the house. Set against the backdrop the Eiffel Tower, its lights perfectly timed to the moment the first model strode out, it made a grand statement indeed. Vaccarello said: “I wanted to make it big for Saint Laurent—I wanted to show to everyone that it’s the best house, with the most legacy, the most everything. And for that, you need a big show.” After a more muted indoor showing for his 2018 winter collection, Vaccarello returned to the shadow of Paris’ iconic landmark for the Spring/Summer 2019 runway collection. This time the tower’s twinkling lights were complemented by electric white palm trees and models that quite literally walked on water. Showcasing a whopping 95 looks, Vaccarello gave many of the house’s signatures a fresh spin – think Western-inspired tuxedo jackets, an almost chainmail-like take on the legendary sheer blouse and a glittering, cropped jumpsuit. These designs were joined by a legion of leggy models in gold leather shorts, brazenly slashed swimwear and sequined mini dresses – all wardrobe essentials for today’s style confident woman. In notes sent to editors ahead of the show, Vaccarello recalled how the house founder empowered women, and by this latest showing it’s clear the designer intends to walk a similarly bold path.

T
he story of Dubai’s evolution from a small fishing town to a thriving modern metropolis is well known to people all around the world. A shining example of what can be achieved, the emirate has become renowned for its towering skyscrapers and man-made wonders. Yet, it is only in more recent times that those outside of the country have begun to take note of the city’s flourishing design sector. Encompassing everything from fashion and photography to graphic and interior design, there are homegrown businesses throughout Dubai that are pushing the boundaries. And far from feeling restricted, these creative companies have been urged to express themselves thanks to the creation of annual shows and the construction of new districts. At one time Alserkal Avenue was little more than an industrial area full of warehouses, but now the area has transformed into an arts and culture hub with a line-up of galleries and design studios. Similarly, the buzzing Dubai Design District (d3) was little more than a patch of desert before 2015. Now it is known as a ‘creative city of design’ and has attracted a host of local companies who are keen to showcase their talent. The area is also home to Dubai Design Week, an annual event that began in 2015 and now attracts more than 60,000 visitors and is considered the largest creative festival in the Middle East. Lasting six days, it showcases a variety of design skills and disciplines, including architecture, industrial design, technology and art. “There are few opportunities to cross-fertilise ideas and inspirations across design disciplines, so events like Dubai Design Week are a great forum for

Specialising in landscape architecture, their work can be seen throughout the UAE and includes everything from rooftop pool hangouts and lush private residences to desert parks and urban plazas. “Thankfully clients in the UAE have realised that there is some fantastic local talent and it is no longer necessary to seek out cutting-edge designers from Europe, America or elsewhere as a default,” says Denley. “There are some superb companies here which have been in the region for decades, know the culture and environment, and are just as able to innovate and deliver to an ‘international standard’.”

Founded in 2011, they are known for pushing the boundaries of conventional design and using innovative techniques to distinguish themselves from other companies. “We have had the pleasure of developing homegrown brands that haven’t been afraid of out of the box thinking and developing a truly individual and dynamic positioning within the market. The local f lair of ‘brand UAE’ is being pushed and a unique identity of Emirati modern fusion has been developed,” explains Carla Conte, Creative Director of Brand Creative.

Acclaimed designed Safiya Abdallah grew up in California but moved to the emirate and launched Dulce by Safiya three years ago. Known for her chic beanies, her clothing has been worn by singer Gwen Stefani and she is currently working on a new line with American actress Lindsay Lohan. Swiss entrepreneur and founder of avant-garde watch brand MB&F, Maximillian Büsser also moved to Dubai in 2014 and initially opened the M.A.D Gallery in Alserkal Avenue. As well as a home for his unique watches, the store showcases ‘mechanical art’ from visionary creators all around the world. Such has been the popularity of the work, that the gallery moved into The Dubai Mall and is now sitting alongside some of the world’s most exclusive brands in the Fashion Avenue. With individuals moving to the country in order to establish brands and homegrown talent excelling, it seems it won’t be long before Dubai also becomes renowned for its world-class creative sector.

In line with its ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 roadmap, the country has been increasingly focusing on diversifying its economy with major investments in the infrastructure and tourism sectors. As a result, the Kingdom has witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of corporate and leisure travellers, which, in turn, has led to a sharp rise in demand for branded accommodation. Keen to capitalise on this opportunity, Rotana has planned a new line-up of four hotels to address the growing supply gap in the market.

Rotana appoints new Corporate Vice President - Food & Beverage Operations As part of its ongoing regional and global expansion, Rotana has announced the appointment of Jarrett Beaulieu as Corporate Vice President - Food and Beverage Operations. With an extensive background and expertise in food and beverage (F&B) strategy, development and openings, Beaulieu will be at the helm of the organisation-wide efforts aimed at enhancing Rotana’s restaurant portfolio in the region. The industry veteran will be responsible for the development of new concepts of outlets that deliver on the company’s promise of ‘Treasured Time’ and offer endless culinary adventures to its guests, in addition to maintaining the company’s high standards in improving the quality of products and services. Honouring the past With Qasr Al Hosn reopening to the public and cultural attractions throughout the country thriving, there has never been a better time to celebrate the rich heritage of the UAE by Nasser Al Nowais, Chairman, Rotana
here is no doubt that the UAE has grown tremendously in a short space of time. Now an attractive destination for tourists and investors, the country has always looked to the future and set ambitious goals. Yet, while it continues to evolve and modernise, there remains a focus on the past. This was highlighted at the end of March with the grand opening of Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest and most significant building in Abu Dhabi. Built in the 1790s, it was initially a commanding watchtower before becoming home to the UAE’s ruling family and later a national archive. Now, after 11 years of renovation work, it has been transformed into a museum that tells the story of the capital. Far from the only cultural attraction in the country, the likes of Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai’s Al Seef District have proved to be hugely popular with visitors to the UAE, and each goes some way to revealing the fascinating history of the emirates. More new openings are also planned, with Zayed National Museum a prime example of how Abu Dhabi remains determined to reflect on its past by showcasing its culture. As a homegrown brand that first put down roots in Abu Dhabi, we are proud to see how the UAE continues to grow, while at the same time places a firm emphasis on its traditions. Similarly, at Rotana, we are always looking to expand the brand and move into new territories. This year alone we will open 10 new hotels, including the 285-key Dana Rayhaan by Rotana, Dammam in Saudi Arabia. We will also be opening our first ever properties in Tanzania, with the Johari Rotana, Dar Es Salaam, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Bosmal Arjaan by Rotana, Sarajevo. This year will also see us open a new property in an area of Dubai that has a rich history. The 338-key Al Jaddaf Rotana is located close to Dubai Creek, which for decades allowed the emirate’s pearling and fishing industries to thrive. Dhows can still be seen on the long stretch of water as they transport goods, while along the shoreline is Dubai Culture Village. Currently under development, the area will house cultural and exhibition centres that will tell the story of how Dubai transformed from a small coastal village to the modern metropolis it is today.
This is what makes the UAE such a special place to visit. While it may be home to futuristic skyscrapers, world-class amusement parks and sprawling shopping malls, it is also brimming with cultural attractions that provide a glimpse into the region’s rich history and timeless traditions. This ability to look towards the future while still paying close attention to its roots is a philosophy that we at Rotana intend to emulate as we continue on our own journey.

لقد تمكنت دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة من دون شك من تحقيق قفزات نمو مذهلة خالل فترة وجيزة ،فلطالما تطلعت الدولة ،التي أصبحت اليوم وجهة جاذبة للسياح والمستثمرين ،إلى المستقبل ووضعت أمام أعينها أهدافاً طموحة وجريئة .وعلى الرغم من اهتمام اإلمارات العربية المتحدة ينصب في الوقت الراهن على خطط التطوير والتحديث ،إال أنها ظلت حريصة على إحياء ماضيها العريق .وقد ظهر ذلك جلياً لدى االفتتاح الكبير الذي أقيم في نهاية شهر مارس لقصر الحصن التاريخي ،الذي يعتبر أقدم المباني في أبوظبي وأهمهاُ .شيد قصر الحصن في القرن الثامن عشر ليكون في بداية األمر برجاً للمراقبة، قبل أن يصبح مقراً لألسرة الحاكمة في اإلمارات العربية المتحدة .واليوم وبعد 11عاماً من بدء أعمال الترميم ،تم تحويل الحصن ليصبح متحفاً يحكي قصة عاصمة البالد منذ نشأتها األولى. تزخر اإلمارات العربية المتحدة بالعديد من المعالم الثقافية والتاريخية والسياحية التي تحظى بشهرة كبيرة لدي زوارها ،مثل متحف اللوفر أبوظبي ومنارة السعديات وقلعة الفهيدي ومنطقة السيف التراثية بخور دبي .وهي مواقع عريقة يكشف لك منها جانباً من سحر اإلمارات وتاريخها الممتد .وتواصل أبوظبي عزمها على االستلهام من ماضيها العريق باستعراض ثقافتها وتراثها ،وربما يكون افتتاح متحف زايد الوطني خير دليل على ذلك. وباعتبارنا من العالمات الفندقية التي نشأت في الدولة وبدأت خطواتها األولى من العاصمة أبوظبي ،فإننا ننظر بلك فخر وإعجاب إلى المسار الوطني الذي انتهجته دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة لمواصلة النمو والتطور مع الحرص في الوقت نفسه على التقاليد العريقة .وبدورنا نسعى في روتانا إلى توسيع نطاق أعمالنا وولوج أسواق جديدة .وتستعد مجموعتنا اآلن الفتتاح 10فنادق جديدة خالل العام الجاري من بينها فندق دانا ريحان بمدينة الدمام السعودية الذي يضم 285غرفة ،كما نستعد الفتتاح جوهري روتانا أول فنادق المجموعة في دار السالم بتنزانيا ،وتدشين فندق بوسمال أرجان في سراييفو عاصمة البوسنة والهرسك. كما تشهد مجموعتنا العام الجاري أيضاً افتتاح أحدث فنادقنا في إحدى المناطق التاريخية في دبي ،حيث سيتم افتتاح فندق الجداف روتانا الذي يضم ُ 338غرفة ويقع بالقرب من خور دبي .في الماضي، اكنت هذه المنطقة تعتبر شريان حياة لمهنة الصيد واستخراج اللؤلؤ في اإلمارة وظلت شاهدة على ازدهارها لعقود طويلة .ويمكننا حتى يومنا هذا مشاهدة القوارب الشراعية وهي تنقل البضائع بينما نستمتع بمشهد قرية دبي الثقافية على طول الساحل .تضم منطقة
خور دبي التي يتم تطويرها حالياً مراكز ثقافية تحكي قصة تحول دبي من قرية ساحلية صغيرة إلى مدينة عصرية عالمية. إن هذا التنوع الثقافي والمعماري هو ما يجعل اإلمارات العربية المتحدة ماكناً مميزاً واستثنائياً ،فالمدينة التي تحتضن العديد من ناطحات السحاب الحديثة والمتنزهات الترفيهية ذات المستوى العالمي ومراكز التسوق الكبرى ،تزخر أيضاً بمعالم جذب ثقافية تعطي لمحة عن تاريخ المنطقة العريق وتقاليدها األصيلة .ونحن نثمن قدرة الدولة على الجمع بين التطلع نحو المستقبل والحفاظ على جذورها وإرثها األصيل ،وهي فلسفة ونظرة ثاقبة نعتزم أن نحذو حذوها في روتانا ونحن نواصل مسيرتنا نحو التطور واالزدهار.

انسجاماً مع التطور االقتصادي السريع الذي تشهده المملكة العربية السعودية ،أعلنت روتانا عن خططها التوسعية الشاملة في المملكة العربية السعودية .وتماشياً مع رؤية المملكة ،2030ركزت السعودية بشلك كبير على تنويع اقتصادها من خالل استثمارات رئيسية في قطاعات البنية التحتية والعقارات والسياحة ،مما ساهم في إحداث زيادة هائلة في أعداد المسافرين إليها بغرض العمل أو السياحة .وقد حرصت روتانا على االستفادة من هذه الفرصة ،حيث تشمل استراتيجية الشركة في المملكة إضافة أربعة فنادق جديدة بهدف تلبية الطلب المتزايد في هذه السوق اآلخذة في النمو. من المقرر افتتاح لك من سنترو الكورنيش، الخبر ،ودانا ريحان من روتانا ،الدمام هذا ُ العام ،في حين سيتم افتتاح سالمة أرجان من روتانا ،جدة ،وسنترو المدينة ،المدينة المنورة، خالل الربع الثاني من .2020وستضيف الفنادق الجديدة 1018غرفة فندقية إلى محفظة روتانا الفندقية في المملكة. وقال غاي هاتشينسون ،الرئيس التنفيذي

مدينة حديثة َدلِ ل نفسك بالتسوق

مثلنا ،وذلك بفضل التطور الكبير الذي تشهده الصناعة في اإلمارات” .عززت هذه العوامل صناعة اإلبداع في دبي ،كما ساهمت في استقطاب مصممين أجانب للعمل في المنطقة المبدعة وإطالق عالماتهم التجارية منها ،مثل المصممة ِ صفية عبدالله التي نشأت في اكليفورنيا بالواليات المتحدة األمريكية لكنها انتقلت لإلقامة في دبي وأطلقت عالمتها التجارية “دولشي باي صفية” قبل ثالث سنوات .اشتهرت صفية بتصميم قبعات وأغطية الرأس األنيقة ،وارتدت قبعاتها المغنية األمريكية جوين ستيفاني ،وتعمل حالياً على إنتاج خط جديد بالتعاون مع الممثلة األمريكية ليندسي لوهان. كما انتقل ماكسيميليان بوسيه ،رائد األعمال السويسري ومؤسس العالمة التجارية (إم بي آند إف) للساعات ،إلى دبي السيراكل عام 2014وافتتح في البداية جاليري “ماد” في ِ أفينيو .باإلضافة إلى عرض ساعاته المتميزة ،يستعرض الجاليري “الفن المياكنيكي” أي قطع وآالت مياكنيكية أبدعها فنانون وحرفيون مهرة من لك أنحاء العالم .وأعطى هذا األسلوب شهرة وتميز ألعماله فانتقل الجاليري إلى موقعه الجديد في دبي مول ليعرض مجموعاته الفنية إلى جانب عدد من أشهر العالمات التجارية الفاخرة في عالم الموضة .واليوم مع انتقال مصممين عالميين إلى اإلمارات العربية المتحدة من أجل تأسيس عالماتهم التجارية وبروز مواهب المصممين المحليين ،لن يمر وقت طويل قبل أن تذيع شهرة دبي في صناعة اإلبداع العالمية.

أصبحت قصة تطور دبي من مدينة صيد صغيرة إلى والدان في مدينة عصرية مزدهرة معروفة للقاص ِ جميع أنحاء العالم ،إذ تشتهر اإلمارة بناطحات السحاب الشاهقة والعجائب المعمارية .ومع مالمح التطور تلك بدأت صناعة التصميم الصاعدة تلفت اهتمام المهتمين بالصناعة في الخارج .هناك العديد من الشراكت المحلية التي تعمل في هذا القطاع والتي تمكنت من تحقيق النجاح في مجاالت مختلفة بدءاً من األزياء والتصوير الفوتوغرافي وحتى تصميم الجرافيك والتصميم الداخلي ،حيث وجدت هذه الشراكت اإلبداعية مجاال للتعبير بفضل المعارض التي يتم تنظيمها سنوياً، ً والمناطق المخصصة لهم التي يتم إنشائها. لم يكن حي السيراكل أفينيو في السابق أكثر من منطقة صناعية مزدحمة بالمستودعات ،لكنه تحول اليوم إلى مركز للفنون والثقافة يعج بمجموعة من المعارض الفنية وأستوديوهات التصميم .وبالمثل اكنت منطقة دبي للتصميم المزدحمة عبارة عن منطقة خالية قبل عام ،2015إال أنها تحولت اليوم لتصبح واحة للتصميم واإلبداع تحت اسم حي دبي للتصميم “دي ”3تجتذب مجموعة من الشراكت المحلية التي تتطلع لمشاركة إبداعاتها .وتحتضن المنطقة منذ عام 2015فعاليات أسبوع دبي للتصميم ،وهو الحدث الذي يستقطب سنوياً أكثر من 60ألف زائر ،ويعتبر أكبر مهرجان إبداعي في الشرق األوسط. يستعرض القائمون على أسبوع التصميم الذي يقام على مدى ستة أيام ،مجموعة متنوعة من مهارات التصميم ومجاالته المختلفة مثل العمارة والتصميم الصناعي والتكنولوجيا والفن .ويوضح دناكن دينلي، قائال“ :عادة ما تكون الفرص مدير شركة ديزرت إنك ً قليلة لتوليد األفاكر وتبادلها أو لتحفيز اإلبداع في مجاالت التصميم المختلفة ،لذلك نعتبر وجود فعاليات مثل أسبوع دبي للتصميم فسحة رائعة للتعبير واإلبداع،

والتي جسد بها إيف سان لوران فكرة جديدة لم يتطرق إليها أي مصمم من قبل ،وتتمثل في إماكنية تطبيق الطابع العملي الذي يميز المالبس الرجالية على مالبس المرأة .وبالفعل نجح لوران في أن يمزج ببراعة بين المظهر الرجولي العملي والحس األنثوي الناعم في هذه البدلة التي شلكت فتحاً جديداً في عالم األزياء يدعم فكرة المساواة بين الجنسين وتمكين المرأة. قائال“ :ال بد ألي سيدة أنيقة من وصرح لوران وقتها ً اقتناء بدلة التوكسيدو ألنها ستشعرها بالثقة واألناقة معاً .صممت هذه القطعة بأناقة وذوق عال ال لمسايرة الموضة ،ألن عمر الموضة قصير أما األناقة فهي أبدية ”.وما من شك بأن مقولته صدقت مع الزمن. اكن التنوع عنصراً بارزاً في حياة لوران المهنية ،إذ اكن أول بيت أزياء يستعين بعارضات من ذوات البشرة السمراء مثل إيمان واكتوشا نيان ودلما اكالدو .كما أن تعيين لوران المصمم الفرنسي تونسي األصل هادي سليمان كمدير إبداعي ،ساهم في إحداث تغييرات

كبيرة داخل الدار ،واكن أول ما فعله هادي تغيير العالمة التجارية من “إيف سان لوران” إلى “سان لوران باريس” جدال ساخناً وانتقادات قوية بين المهتمين مما أحدث ً بصناعة األزياء .كما أثار ظهور المجموعة األولى لسليمان المزيد من الجدل ،إذ ركز على العارضات شديدات النحافة والمالبس التي تناسب لكا الجنسين ،والتي اشتهر بها عندما اكن يعمل في قسم األزياء الرجالية في بيت أزياء ديور .هذه المجموعة دللت على موجة جديدة من هيمنة السمات الرجالية على تصاميم لوران .وعلى الرغم من االنتقادات التي طالت هذا التوجه ،إال أن المجموع مذهال. ً القت نجاحاً تجارياً واليوم ،يرأس مصمم األزياء البلجيكي الشاب أنتوني فااكريلو ( 26عاماً) القسم اإلبداعي في دار أزياء سان لوران بعد رحيل سليمان عنها ،ويتوقع العاملون في الصناعة أن يستمر بيت األزياء الشهير في االزدهار والنجاح مع إضافة المصمم الشاب لمسات جذابة على تصميمات هادي الجميلة التي تأثرت بروح موسيقى روك أند رول .وركز فااكريلو تصميماته على الخطوط القوية الحادة والخلفيات المظللة التي جمعت بين ُ األناقة وذوق الشارع ،مما يعيد بيت لوران من جديد إلى القدرة اإلبداعية االستثنائية والباهرة التي تمكنه من إعادة تشكيل اتجاه الموضة الحالي ومزاجه. منذ انضمامه إلى الدار عام ،2016بدت تصميمات المصمم البلجيكي منسجمة ،وقد ميزتها األزياء األنيقة والمالبس الشبابية التي تناسب الحفالت .وصرح فااكريلو بأنه شعر بالثقة والنجاح في هذه اإلمبراطورية العريقة، وأنه اختار إطالق مجموعته لربيع وصيف 2018ليكشف عن طموحاته الكبيرة بالنسبة لدار األزياء الشهيرة .أقيم العرض على خلفية برج إيفل الشهير وأضوائه التي ُضبطت بحيث تتألأل مع الخطوات األولى التي تخطوها العارضات على المنصة في لقطة معبرة قوية لبداية قائال“ :رغبت في جعله عرضاً كبيراً العرض .وعلق فااكريلو ً من جميع النواحي ،لقد أردت أن أثبت للجميع أننا أفضل بيت أزياء يمتلك أكبر إرث في عالم الموضة ،وهو األفضل في لك شيء .ولذلك أنتم تحتاجون لرؤية عرض كبير ومميز يليق بنا” .وبعد أن قدم عرض أزياء مجموعة شتاء 2018في قاعة مغلقة خافتة األضواء عاد فااكريلو مرة أخرى إلى أحضان المعالم الباريسية الشهيرة. مذهال مرة أخرى أسفل برج إيفل، ً أقام اكفاريلو عرضاً حيث أحاط المصمم الشاب الماكن بأشجار نخيل صناعية تألألت باألضواء البيضاء البراقة ،قدمت وسطها العارضات 95إطاللة مختلفة بينما كن يتمايلن فوق الماء أمام الحاضرين .قدم فااكريلو تصميمات حافظت على هوية وتراث لوران مع إضفاء لمسات عصرية .كما عرض سترات التوكسيدو ذات الطراز الغربي والبلوزات الشفافة المغطاة بسالسل والبدل الالمعة .وأعلن فااكريلو في رسالة وجهها إلى الصحفيين قبل العرض ،أنه حاول استحضار شغف مؤسس الدار لوران بدعم المرأة من خالل تصميماته ،وأن عرضه األخير يؤكد حرصه على مواصلة هذا الطريق الشجاع والجريء.

عندما يأتي ذكر الفترة التي ظهر فيها كبار المصممين العالميين ،فإن القليل من األسماء برزت بشلك كبير كما اكن الحال مع المصمم العالمي إيف سان لوران ،والذي يعتبر اليوم من أساطير عالم الموضة لتجربته المتفردة التي جعلته يتفوق على أكثر منافسيه براعة .وهو من القالئل الذين ُينسب لهم تغيير وجه صناعة أزياء المرأة العصرية. انتقل إيف سان لوران – المولود في الجزائر عام – 1936للعيش في باريس وهو في سن السابعة عشرة ليتابع شغفه بتعلم تصميم األزياء الذي عشقه منذ الصغر .أسس لوران مع شريكه الفرنسي بيير بيرج دار األزياء الخاصة به عام ،1962واتخذ أولى خطواته المهمة في عالم األزياء عام 1966عندما افتتح “ريف جوش” لبيع المالبس الجاهزة في العاصمة الفرنسية، باريس ،ليصبح أول مصمم أزياء عالمي يمتلك متجراً ،وهو نفس العام الذي شهد فيه إطالق أحد أهم تصاميمه على اإلطالق واكن عبارة عن أول بدلة توكسيدو للمرأة،

تصاميم رائعة
بدءاً من ناطحات السحاب الشاهقة وحتى المساجد بتصاميمها المعمارية الساحرة، تزخر منطقة الشرق األوسط بمجموعة ال تضاهى من التحف المعمارية الخالدة
لطالما فتنت منطقة الشرق األوسط الزوار بطبيعتها الساحرة بدءاً من المناطق الصحراوية المترامية وحتى الشواطئ الرملية الذهبية والمياه الكريستالية .لكنها خالل السنوات األخيرة اكتسبت سمعة من نوع مختلف مع احتضانها مجموعة عجائب من صنع البشر ،من ناطحات سحاب مذهلة وهيالك هندسية مبتكرة والكثير من المعالم التي تبقى عالقة في األذهان .وقد لمعت أسماء بعض المدن العربية بفضل قدرتها على الخروج عن المألوف باستمرار في مجال الهندسة المعمارية .
جامع الشيخ زايد الكبير ،أبوظبي
جامع الشيخ زايد الكبير ،أبوظبي
شيد جامع الشيخ زايد الكبير ،الوجهة األكثر شعبية ّ في العاصمة اإلماراتية ،لالحتفاء بالتنوع الثقافي في العالم االسالمي .استغرق بناء الجامع أكثر من عقد من الزمان ،وقد صممه المهندس المعماري السوري مصل في يوسف عبدلكي ليتسع لحوالي 40ألف ٍ مختلف أقسامه .من معالمه المميزة القباب المذهلة والمآذن األربع الموزعة في أراكن الصحن الخارجي، وتتميز قاعة الصالة الرئيسية بوجود 96عاموداً مكسوة بالرخام ومطعمة بعرق اللؤلؤ ،بينما تغطي أرضها أكبر سجادة إسالمية يدوية في العالم ،يصل وزنها إلى 35طناً .
برج جدة ،المملكة العربية السعودية
اكن يعرف سابقاً باسم برج المملكة وكذلك “مايل- هاي” ،وهو ناطحة سحاب تحت اإلنشاء من المتوقع أن تتفوق على برج خليفة أكطول بناية في العالم عند اكتمالها عام .2020بوشرت عمليات اإلنشاء في البرج عام 2013لتنفيذ تصميم وضعه المهندس المعماري ادريان سميث ،الذي وضع تصميم برج خليفة كذلك ،وبمجرد االنتهاء منه سيكون أول مبنى في العالم يصل إلى نقطة الكيلو متر .وتعد الشرفة الخارجية التي يبلغ طولها 30متراً والمعروفة باسم “ساكي تراس” ،من أكثر التفاصيل المدهشة للتصميم، وال يمكن الوصول إليها إال عن طريق بنتهاوس على الطابق .157
اللوفر أبوظبي
افتتح متحف اللوفر أبوظبي ،الذي صممه المهندس المعماري الشهير جان نوفيل واستغرق بنائه عشر سنوات ،عام 2017وسرعان ما تمكن من تأكيد ماكنته كوجهة ثقافية رئيسية في العاصمة اإلماراتية .يتميز المبنى بتصميم القبة "العائمة" المرصعة بالنجوم، حيث تدخل أشعة الشمس من خاللها عبر فتحات تذكر بانسياب النور من بين األوراق المسننة لسعف أشجار النخيل في واحة خضراء .وال تقل التصاميم الداخلية

أعيد افتتاح الحصن ليكون بمثابة نصب تذكاري حي يروي قصة وتاريخ إمارة أبوظبي العريق
ذلك الهندسة المعمارية والتاريخ واألنثروبولوجيا ،حيث تقول الشامسي“ :نسعى جاهدين لجعل قصر الحصن المحطة األولى لجميع زوار أبوظبي”. ومع استمرار أبوظبي في المضي قدماً في تنفيذ خططها المستقبلية ،يبقى قصر الحصن بمثابة شاهد دائم على التطورات التي شهدتها اإلمارة منذ بداياتها األولى ،والطريقة المثلى للتعرف على تاريخ وحضارة هذه اإلمارة العريقة. يفتح قصر الحصن أبوابه من التاسعة صباحاً وحتى السابعة مساء خالل األسبوع ،في حين أن المؤسسة ً الثقافية تفتتح أبوابها من الساعة العاشرة صباحاً وحتى الثامنة مساء خالل األسبوع .في يوم الجمعة ،تفتح لكا ً الوجهتين من الساعة 12ظهراً حتى الساعة 10مساء. ً
أروقة هذا البناء التاريخي ،حيث تقول“ :اقترح قضاء الفترة الصباحية في التجول في القصر وبرج المراقبة التاريخي .بعد ذلك يمكن االستمتاع بنزهة بين المناظر الطبيعية المحيطة بالقصر والتعرف على أسرار واحة قصر الحصن المضلعة الشلك على شلك تشققات ملحية جافة”. وأضافت تقول“ :في فترة ما بعد الظهيرة ،يمكن التوجه إلى المؤسسة الثقافية لالستمتاع بمشاهدة المعرض الحالي واستوديو الفنانين .والمشاركة بعد ذلك في إحدى ورش العمل مثل الرسم باألكريليك مع فنان محلي ،ليختتم المساء مع جلسة حوارية مع أحد خبراء الصناع”. كما توضح الشامسي ،هناك الكثير مما يمكن عمله في قصر الحصن بعد استكشاف تاريخ المبنى، إذ تنظم المعارض الورش التراثية على مدار العام، إضافة إلى وجود أجندة لمجموعة من الفعاليات الموسيقية اإلماراتية .وتهدف جميع هذه النشاطات في نهاية المطاف إلعادة إحياء الموقع وتأكيد ماكنته كمركز للثقافة والتراث في عاصمة دولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة. وللمساعدة في تحقيق هذا الهدف ،سيتم سنوياً تنظيم سلسلة من الجوالت المتخصصة التي تسلط الضوء على الموضوعات الرئيسية ،بما في

عند زيارة العاصمة اإلماراتية أبوظبي ،ستجد أمامك مدينة عصرية بلك ما فيها من طرق سريعة ومراكز تسوق ضخمة وناطحات سحاب شاهقة ،والكثير من معالم الجذب السياحي بخطى ذات المستوى العالمي .وفي الوقت الذي تمضي فيه ً ثابتة نحو مستقبل زاهر ،تحرص اإلمارة على إعادة إحياء وتكريم ماضيها العتيد. استقرت قبائل بني ياس ألول مرة في جزيرة أبوظبي عام ،1761ومنذ ذلك الحين بدأت المدينة في التوسع بشلك متسارع خالل ذروة تجارة اللؤلؤ .ولكن عندما انهارت هذه التجارة ،عانت اإلمارة من االنكماش االقتصادي ،واستمر ذلك حتى اكتشاف النفط عام ،1958حيث شهدت المدينة العديد من التطورات التي أصبحت حديث العالم فيما بعد. طوال هذه الفترة من التاريخ ،تم الحفاظ على قصر الحصن، كشاهد على تاريخ عريق ،ويعد اليوم أقدم موقع تراثي في أبوظبي ،حيث يعود تاريخ بناء بعض أجزاءه إلى عام .1760 يتكون الحصن من مبنيين هامين ،األول “الحصن الداخلي” المبني من الحجر المرجاني والصخور البحرية من قبل الشيخ شخبوط بن ذياب عام ،1795والثاني "القصر الخارجي" الذي
أضافه الشيخ شخبوط بن سلطان آل نهيان عام ،1939واكن وملتقى للحكومة اإلماراتية مقراً للحكم واألسرة الحاكمة ً ومجلساً استشارياً وأرشيفاً وطنياً . واليوم ،وبعد أكثر من عقد على بدء عمليات الترميم ،أعيد افتتاح الحصن ليكون بمثابة نصب تذاكري حي يروي قصة وتاريخ إمارة أبوظبي العريق .يمكن للزوار أن يسيروا على خطى أفراد العائلة الحاكمة الذين اكنوا يعيشون هناك منذ أكثر من 200 عام ،وتسلق برج المراقبة الذي تم بناؤه لحماية طرق التجارة الساحلية ألبوظبي ،واستكشاف المتحف الذي يحتضن بين أروقته قطعاً أثرية ومواداً أرشيفية يعود تاريخها إلى 6000 عام قبل الميالد. يضم قصر الحصن كذلك مجموعة من الصور التاريخية المعروضة جنباً إلى جنب مع مجموعة من األعمال الفنية اإلماراتية الحديثة ،بينما تعرض الحرف التقليدية للنساء البدويات من خالل معرض تفاعلي في بيت الحرفيين .هنا سترى عن قرب عملية تطريز التلي وتجديل خوص النخيل لصنع السالل. هناك الكثير مما يمكن مشاهدته خالل الزيارة ،وتوضح سالمة الشامسي ،مديرة قصر الحصن ،أفضل طريقة لقضاء يوم بين
