Welcome Welcome to the latest issue of Rotana magazine. Summer is well and truly here and with it comes a host of cultural festivals across the region. Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain are among the destinations that welcome visitors with a host of heritage events celebrating all these countries stand for. It’s the perfect time to explore the modern-day Gulf and gain a glimpse into the customs and traditions on which its societies are based.

A selection of these festivals, exhibitions and activities taking place across the region over the next three months are highlighted in our Access section. It’s your go-to-guide for the summer season in the Middle East.

As the retail sector continues to diversify across the region, the options for shoppers are excellent.

Among them is a host of stunning interior design brands offering everything from a fresh take on traditional Arabic designs, to contemporary Middle Eastern works. We take a look at some of the designers who have been inspired by the region on page 34.

An important religious holiday across the Islamic world, Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the culmination of 30 days of fasting. This is the first of two Eid holidays, the second of which is Eid al-Adha. During Eid al-Fitr, Muslims engage in special prayers, perform acts of charity and hold family celebrations. The holiday begins on the day of the first sighting of the crescent moon, shortly after sunset on the 29th or 30th day of Ramadan. Held among the breathtaking Jerash Roman ruins, this annual cultural celebration brings together performers from across Jordan and the region to perform before audiences in the most magical of settings.

Celebrity Arabic singers such as Sherine (pictured) and Wael Kfoury have performed here in the past, alongside ballet and theatre troupes, folklore dancers and orchestras. Some 150,000 people attend the festival each year, which was founded by HH Queen Nour of Jordan in 1981.

The Alice Springs Camel Cup is a fun-packed weekend where lighthearted competition raises funds for local charities. Nine unique races boast highlights such as the hilarious honeymoon handicap which sees new husbands stop to pick up their brides on the way round the track. The variety of activities includes rickshaw races, camel rides and belly dancing.

Food stalls and beverage stands add to the carnival atmosphere.

With its rolling desert dunes, fertile mangrove forests and mile upon mile of untouched coastline, not to mention an abundance of exotic desert islands, Abu Dhabi is uniquely photogenic. With this in mind, the organisers of Abu Dhabi Through Your Eyes, have invited photographers to capture the spirit of the emirate through the lens as part of a competition.

Suggested subjects for the contest include Abu Dhabi architecture, art, landscapes, traditions, people and events, but emphasis is placed on photographers exploring those aspects of Abu Dhabi that inspire them the most.

“There are no specific themes or categories this year, the competition is open to all and the brief to photographers is simply to capture Abu Dhabi through their eyes,” says a spokesperson for the contest.

The competition, which is supported by Rotana hotels, is designed to promote the UAE capital while providing a platform for talented photographers, both local and international, to explore

and exhibit their favourite aspects of the emirate. Prizes will be presented to the most impressive entries at an awards ceremony in September, with a special category for students based in the UAE. Both amateur and professional photographers are invited to take part and contribute to the library of stunning Abu Dhabi shots being created.

A judging panel will determine the winners based on a variety of criteria, including the creativity, emotion and impact of the picture in addition to its photographic quality and the technical capabilities it displays. The photograph’s effectiveness in expressing the essence of Abu Dhabi will also be considered.

Famed for tourism hot spots including the ancient Nabatean kingdom of Petra, the extraordinary desert landscape of Wadi Rum and the healing waters of the Dead Sea, Jordan has an enormous amount to offer visitors.

However, the country’s headline attractions are just a fraction of its wonders.

Famed historic sites include spectacular Roman ruins at Jerash and Umm Qais while stunning landscapes afford ample opportunity for adventure activities such as deep sea diving in the Red Sea and canyoning at Wadi Mujib.

Jordan Tourism Board is launching a new campaign highlighting the country’s appeal as a destination for new adventures. “The major sources of inspiration for the campaign stem from providing tourists with alternative, novel experiences,” explains Dr Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, Managing Director of the Jordan Tourism Board.

“Another source of inspiration comes from events that have recently occurred in Jordan,

such as the filming of The Martian in Wadi Rum. We wanted to re-brand Jordan as a film destination where tourists can relive the experiences seen on such platforms.

“In terms of the number of tourists, visitors from the Gulf exceed all others.

However, Europeans and North Americans have the highest length of stay and are the highest spenders,” Arabiyat explains, adding that they are currently focusing on Far-Eastern markets in addition to Eastern Europe.

Inevitably, political instability in the region has had an impact on Jordan’s tourism market with a decline in the number of visitors to the country between 2011 and 2015. However, Arabiyat is optimistic that the new campaign will help turn this around. He said: “We believe 2016 will produce much better results with the number of tourists in Jordan in the first quarter nearly equalling the number of tourists for 2015 in its entirety.”

With a different fancy dress theme for its 55,000 attendees each year, Bestival is one of the UK’s more colourful music festivals. In 2010, it broke the Guinness World Record for the most people in fancy dress at one event. Held in Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight, the event prides itself on being a family-friendly festival complete with quirky features such as last year’s wishing tree, swamp shack and tea and cake tent run by the local Women’s Institute.

Art is one of the best ways mankind knows to transcend time. Since the dawn of civilisation, artists have been finding ways to defy the passage of time by creating works that go beyond the limitations of their own life span and endure for centuries, speaking to generation after generation and influencing thought across the ages. In this new exhibition curated by Istanbul Modern Director Levent Çalıkoğlu, the implications of this dynamic are explored in relation to a selection of artists from different time periods, both on a personal level between the artist and their works, and on a wider scale looking at the passage of a piece of artwork through time.

In doing so, Artists in Their Time engages with a series of themes in the journey of art throughout history, such as the evolution from the tradition of landscapes and still lives, to the perception of nature in contemporary art, the attraction to the sublime and the spiritual, and the role of materials and studios in artistic production.

109 artists are represented by 193 works in the exhibition, which takes as its starting point the words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar

(1901-1962), one of Turkey’s foremost intellectual and literary figures: “I am neither within time nor completely outside of it.” Çalıkoğlu goes on to look at the different ways artists from a variety of locations come to terms with past, present, and future.

The collection catalogue features new articles by two guest authors, one by art historian and critic Ahu Antmen and another by literary historian and expert on Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Handan İnci. In addition, 13 artists have been invited to write texts especially for the show.

The exhibition runs to December 31.

River city This year marks the upcoming launch of Kin Plaza Arjaan by Rotana in Kinshasa, Rotana's first property in the Democratic Republic of The Congo.

Located on the Congo River, this dynamic city is one of Africa’s up-and-coming tourist destinations. The design at JB's is intended to signify the life of a traveller. Vintage luggage, antiques and period light fixtures are dotted around the outlet which seats over 200 guests.

The fourth of the hotel's signature restaurants, JB's Gastropub offers an eclectic menu of predominantly British and American cuisine, championing smoked meats, barbecues and roasts. The first of its kind along The Walk, the venue is aptly named JB's after Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Chef James Hitchens is keen to emphasise that JB’s adds something new to the area's vibrant restaurant scene. He says: “It’s a true gastropub where the food doesn’t take a back seat. When you think JB’s, you think simple food, done well. Social dining is a big trend at the moment.

“There is also huge expectation to deliver an entire experience rather than just delivering food or drink. With our new concept, we have created a menu that features a host of sharing platters to promote communal dining.”

Diners can also make up their own platters of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, both of which are prominently displayed in large showcases at the restaurant's dining area.

Hailing from the UK, Hitchens brings a seasoned understanding of British cuisine, as well as international and regional experience, including as head chef on one of the royal family's Dubai yachts.

The beef short ribs are seared first on the flat top stove and then braised in the oven in a stock of herbs such as rosemary and thyme for nine hours. On the plate, it is served with horseradish mash, fresh grated horseradish, grilled broccoli and pan jus.

The most exciting feature on the menu comes as a choice of 50 centimetres or one metre in length.

It's a perfect starter with a group of friends. We have four varieties made especially for us, spicy chicken chorizo, lamb merguez, veal bratwurst (pictured) and turkey Cumberland sausage served with caramelised onions and condiments.

This dish is our "posh nosh" house ice cream sundae, and as its name suggests, is a taste tribute to all things strawberry.

Riyadh rising Combining centuries of history with modern architecture, luxury hotels and plush shopping malls, the rapidly expanding Saudi capital offers an intriguing mix of old and new Like many cities in the Gulf, Riyadh has undergone remarkable change in recent times. From a dusty walled town tucked away among picturesque palm groves and fertile wadis, the city has grown to become Saudi Arabia’s premier metropolis with a shimmering skyline visible many miles away. Riyadh is also the commerce centre of Saudi Arabia and as such, is well set up to host both business and leisure visitors. There are also some interesting historical sites to explore in and around the city, not to mention impressive examples of modern architecture that are well worth taking the time to see.

Exploring the past

1. Masmak Fortress Renovated in 2008, initial impressions belie the historic importance of this structure. Built in 1865 by the prince of Riyadh Abdulrahman ibn Sulaiman ibn Dabaa, the fortress was stormed by King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud in 1902 when he recaptured Riyadh from the Rashids. A comprehensive account of this daring feat can be found in the exhibition inside the castle walls alongside historic photographs of Riyadh. A detailed display on the ruling House of Saud celebrates the family's achievements.

2. National Museum One of the finest museums in Saudi Arabia, this modern facility was built in 1999 as part of refurbishment of the area around the old Murabba Palace.

Eight interconnected exhibitions explore Saudi history stretching back to Man and the Universe before passing through the early Arabian Kingdoms and the Pre-Islamic Era. Murabba Palace Another important historic site, Murabba Palace was built shortly after the recapture of Riyadh by King Abdul Aziz with the idea of creating a headquarters that would be hard to conquer. 6. Riyadh Zoo Founded in 1957, Riyadh Zoo has long been one of the city's most popular weekend leisure attractions. Initially a small facility set up to house animals gifted to the ruling family, the zoo today houses around 1,500 animals from around the world. A small tram runs around the facility, which is set in a 55-acre park with pleasant grassy areas set aside for picnics. The best time to visit is on a Friday afternoon when the animals are likely to come out. Highlights include Bengal tigers, a flamingo pond and seals.

Liberation Tower, Kuwait

Named to commemorate Kuwait’s liberation from Iraq, this tower was originally intended to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower.

However, after the expulsion of Saddam Hussein’s forces in 1991, it was renamed to commemorate the city’s victory. The needle-like tower is the second-tallest structure in Kuwait City, standing at 372 metres and is one of the city’s most popular visitor attractions.

Bahrain World Trade Centre, Manama This two-tower structure marked an important turning point in sustainable construction in Bahrain when it became the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design.

The sail-shaped buildings work to channel the air flow through the gap between the towers, accelerating the wind passing through the turbines and generating between 11 and 15 percent of the tower’s total power consumption, or approximately 1.1 to 1.3 GWh a year.

Feminine fashion Dedicated to creating beautiful fashions for women, Carolina Herrera's designs have stood the test of time For the past five years, Carolina Herrera has presented her collections at the Lincoln Centre in New York. To introduce her current collection, however, the designer moved proceedings to The Frick Collection, one of the city’s most beautiful sites and a much sought-after venue among fashion designers.

Many have asked but no designer had managed to secure permission to hold a fashion show in this hallowed setting. Until Herrera that is.

With its limestone pillars and profusion of green foliage, the Garden Room at the Frick proved a perfect backdrop for the Carolina Herrera Spring Summer 2016 collection, creating a flattering symmetry with the airy pastels and soft, shifting fabrics of the readyto-wear line. Many agreed it was her prettiest yet, feminine and tasteful but indisputably sophisticated and elegant.

That’s not to say she doesn’t have an eye for the modern. Herrera is quick to take up new technologies and explore new fabrics – her new line features techno foam fabrics and interesting 3D floral motifs, but she keeps her feet firmly on the ground, resistant to the temptations of shock-factor fashion.

Herrera says: “Fashion must be for today, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to go to an extreme. You cannot be run by the red carpet.

You cannot be run by Instagram. You have to be run by your idea of what you want to show…design with your eyes open. Make it contemporary but don’t confuse people.”

Herrera is clear about what she stands for.

Since the early days, her strong personal style has shone through, steering each collection and establishing her reputation for feminine, elegant designs that provide an outlet for grace and glamour. Intrinsically wearable, she is committed to creating clothes that appeal to those who will own them, rather than the critics or her fellow designers. “I have a responsibility to the woman of today, to make her feel confident, modern and above all else, beautiful,” she says.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a magnificent structure and a true example of Middle Eastern architecture in the modern age. Inside the marble columns ornamented with flowing Arabesque designs, calligraphy inscriptions and intricate carvings represent some of the region’s great decorative traditions.

Capturing centuries of artistry and design, the mosque also combines modern methods and materials for a world-famous capital landmark.

There are many fine examples of classic Arabian design around Abu Dhabi and other cities across the Middle East. Some, such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, Oman take a more traditional stance, while others, including the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, celebrate the architectural traditions of the region in new ways, combining classic styles with contemporary concepts to create innovative designs for the modern day.

Flavour of Arabia

It’s not just the major landmarks that display this creative fusion of tradition and innovation. The trend towards capturing the essence of old Arabia in contemporary settings has trickled down to the private sphere as people take inspiration from the

cities around them and infuse their homes with a sense of their surroundings. “Good interior design should always have a sense of place,” explains Lama Qaddumi-Shahin, Managing Partner and Creative Director at Abu Dhabi-based concept boutique, Mosaique.

“Whether clients choose a more classical or contemporary style is down to personal preference but I believe the Middle Eastern/Arabesque patterns will always have a place in this part of the world; whether as hints in their spaces or as focal design aspects,” she continues.

It might be something as simple as hanging a Moroccan lamp from the ceiling to ornament a minimalist setting, or creating depth and contrast with a few well-placed Persian rugs. Alternatively, the use of Arabic fabrics and floor cushions can bring a bolder Middle Eastern flavour to the home environment.

It’s not just Arabic homes; decorative styles traditional to the region are often found in Western households, with many expats recreating Arabian majlis-style seating arrangements or furnishing their homes with pieces inspired by old Arabia, such as heavy antique Omani doors that have been refashioned to serve as tables. In this way, a decorative tribute is paid to the region.

Increasingly, interiors professionals are noticing a trend towards blending eastern and western influences. “The Dubai market is wonderfully diverse with consumers from all walks of life who come with their own ideas, desires and requirements,” says Jenny Helliwell, who runs UAE-based interior design company, Style Addicts together with her sister Aimee Martin.

This is particularly evident in the incorporation of signature Middle Eastern pieces into minimalist settings. “Arabic designs can fit anywhere as long as you don’t over-do it,” says Audrey Solar, founder and creative director of online concept store The People of Sand. One of the brand’s best-selling items are its Moroccan leather poufs which work well in a variety of interiors from traditional Middle Eastern settings to modern Scandinavian

or bohemian environments. “Arabic décor has seen a tremendous change in recent years,” she continues, pointing towards the Lebanese market, where the last decade has witnessed the evolution of a thriving design scene characterised by colour, creativity, ingenuity and eclecticism.

Divergent genres such as Pop Art are finding their way into Middle Eastern design studios, where classic styles are being reinterpreted and redefined to cater to contemporary tastes. “Arabic designs and workmanship are now being mixed with all sorts of contemporary materials and being reinvented in all sorts of ways,” says Mosaique's Qaddumi-Shahin. One example she gives is a line of contemporary concrete side tables adorned with traditional mother-of-pearl strips available at Mosaique. “I also recently saw a rather typical-looking traditional Persian silk carpet with a splash of f luorescent colour woven in. It’s the idea of hanging on to your roots but having the freedom to want to shake things up a little.” As the Middle Eastern design market continues to expand, fed by a constant stream of new ideas, the scope for creativity and innovation grows. Attracting an ever greater roster of design talent, international houses like Flamant have set up shop in the region and are proving ever popular with a focus on artisanal crafted pieces that share inspiration with local themes such as equestrianism.

Positive influence

The collection, entitled Wysada, is a comment on the issues surrounding transportation in her home country, where women are not allowed to drive. The design also weaves in a variety of local traditions with references to Bedouin-style seating and the traditional sadhu cushions used by nomadic tribes.

In Jordan contemporary versions of traditional Bedouin designs are sold to raise funds for causes supported by the Jordan River Foundation, established by HH Queen Rania Al Abdullah.

Many of the items on display at the organisation’s showroom are produced by women’s initiatives that offer empowerment opportunities to women in impoverished rural communities around the country. The brand, also stocked in airport boutiques, is popular with visitors looking for a piece of Jordan to take home with them.

Some designers and brands are taking hold of the trend for mixing mediums and embracing the new climate of experimentation in Middle Eastern interiors circles to make a positive impact.

Dubai-based Saudi Arabian designer, Ayah al Bitar grabbed the attention of the Middle Eastern design community with her innovative collection of floor seats shaped like oversized bicycle saddles at Dubai Design Week last year.

With so much to inspire designers right here on their doorstep, it’s easy to see why the region features so strongly in many new collections, whether it’s the dramatic landscapes or aspects of the vivid local culture. “The proximity of the sand and the sea seem to have a strong influence on the design aesthetic here,” says Solar, explaining that people use these themes to create relaxing interior environments in a way that also brings some of the beauty of the region into their homes.

Rotana wins new travel award Launched during this year’s Arabian Travel Market, the inaugural Arabian Travel Award for Best Arab Group of hotels has been won by Rotana.

Lusail City, just off West Bay lagoon, is made up of residential buildings, island resorts, a commercial district, luxury retail venues and marinas. A walk along the Corniche Stroll down Doha's waterfront for a glimpse of past and present Stretching for several kilometres along Doha Bay, the Corniche waterfront promenade is a favourite spot for a stroll, jog or bike ride for Doha residents and visitors alike. It’s also where a number of the city’s major landmarks can be found. Jutting out from the corniche, on a dedicated island of its own, is the world-famous Museum of Islamic Art, Doha. Doha Fort

In such a modern city it’s easy to overlook the past, but for those interested in exploring Doha’s roots, a trip to this historic fort is a good starting point. Formerly a military fortress, the structure was built in 1927 by Sheikh Abdulla bin Qassim al Thani and later converted into a museum.

Today it houses a number of displays that offer an insight into traditional Qatari life including handicrafts, wooden ornaments, paintings and old photographs.

Desert safari

While there is plenty to keep visitors entertained in the city, it’s well worth venturing out into the desert. A heritage safari is the perfect way to gain an understanding of the Bedouin lifestyle once lived here. Tour operators offer hotel pick- up before driving out into the dunes and onto a traditional camp in the heart of the desert.

Here guests can ride camels and smoke shisha before enjoying an Arabian feast under the stars.

Rotana to open five new hotels in line with Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 Expansion across the Kingdom will bring new Rotana properties to Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar

As part of a rapid expansion across the region, Rotana has announced five new hotels in Saudi Arabia. The move marks an important step in Rotana’s plans to boost its presence in the Kingdom. Over the next year and a half, Rotana will launch two new properties in the Saudi capital Riyadh as well as two in Jeddah and one in Al Khobar.

“Rotana’s ambitious plans to grow its presence in KSA go beyond our scheduled openings in 2016-17, and have been care-

fully designed to complement the Saudi government’s efforts to promote tourism in the Kingdom in line with its Vision 2030,” said Omer Kaddouri, President & CEO of Rotana.

The new developments are part of a major growth surge for Rotana, which will see 17 properties open in major markets across the Middle East and Africa over the next 20 months.

“Rotana is embarking on the next chapter of its growth story. Our robust development pipeline for 2016 and 2017, which includes as many as five openings in Saudi Arabia, brings us closer towards our goal of operating 100 hotels worldwide by 2020,” Kaddouri added.

The five new properties are Centro Shaheen, Jeddah, Centro Waha, Riyadh, Centro Olaya, Riyadh, Centro Corniche, Al Khobar, and Centro Salama, Jeddah.

Rotana celebrates guest service champions Colleagues who have gone beyond the call of duty were honoured as ‘guest service champions’ at the company’s Annual Conference and Awards. The event saw colleagues flown into Abu Dhabi from across the region to receive recognition in a series of presentations, awards and speeches.

“We are extremely proud of the achievements of our Rotana colleagues who gathered at the Annual Awards Event, which was established as a platform to congratulate, thank and reward them. The programme is held in the presence of Rotana management and is our chance to officially recognise our colleagues’ dedication to their work,” said Nasser Al Nowais, Chairman of Rotana.

Rotana gains international green certification RotanaÕs ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability won global recognition with almost 50 percent of the brandÕs UAE portfolio obtaining ISO 14001 certification.

Sixteen of the group's hotels met the stringent requirements for the certification, which is the international standard in environmental management systems.

"Rotana hotels around the world are taking various initiatives for the sake of the

—— Nasser Al Nowais, Chairman, Rotana Next year marks a major milestone for Rotana as we enter our 25th year in operation. Looking back over the past quarter century and the many successes achieved and lessons learnt during that time, there is a lot to be proud of.

Never one to sit still, Rotana has fulfilled its founding vision of becoming one of the leading hotel management companies in the region and a dominant player in the Middle East’s hospitality scene. From two properties in 1993, the brand has grown rapidly to reach its current total of 58 operating hotels and resorts – a number that’s rising steady as we undergo a period of rapid expansion to reach a target of 100 hotels by 2020.

Each year brings a fresh set of milestones. 2015 saw the opening of our first property in Jordan, The Boulevard Arjaan by Rotana and our first two hotels in Turkey, Burgu Arjaan by Rotana and Tango Arjaan by Rotana, in addition to new properties in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. We also received an impressive 17 awards across the portfolio, which included being voted the Middle East’s Leading Hotel brand at the World Travel Awards in the UAE, in addition to receiving recognition for Best Hotel Loyalty Programme in the Middle East at the Business Traveller Middle East Awards in both 2015 and 2016.

Over the coming year, leading up to our 25th anniversary, we will be making many more significant additions to the portfolio, building up our presence in familiar places, while at the same time, embarking on fresh adventures in new and established destinations. These include the opening of Amman Rotana, our second Jordanian venture to several new Saudi properties including Centro Shaheen in Jeddah, Centro Corniche in Al Khobar, Centro Waha and Centro Olaya in the country’s capital. Having established wide coverage

across the Middle East and with continued expansion throughout the region underway, we are also looking at Africa for our next phase of growth.

This year marks the launch of Kin Plaza Arjaan by Rotana in The Democratic Republic of Congo. Located in the heart of the country’s up-and-coming capital, Kinshasa. The 101-room property features Rotana’s customary blend of business and leisure facilities in an environment of comfort and convenience.

In the future, we will also be opening properties in the popular Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh, Lagos in Nigeria and in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. There are also Rotana properties in the pipeline for Tanzania and Mauritania as we identify key locations in Africa to target our expansion in line with the continent’s evolving travel and tourism market.

In total, we will be opening 17 hotels between 2016 and 2017, adding 4,065 keys to our current inventory and taking us to 75 operating hotels and 19,935 keys by the end of our anniversary year. This represents one of our fastest growth periods yet so there will be plenty to look back on and celebrate as we gather to mark the occasion. However, pausing for breath is not Rotana’s style, so, true to form, we will focus instead on looking ahead to all the exciting things we have planned for the months and years to come.

From our ambitious expansion plans on home soil to our forays into new territory, both in the Middle East and beyond into Africa, we are looking at a whole new era for Rotana. This exciting change will be characterised not only by physical growth but also by the ongoing development of our famous five-star service so that we continue to bring the very best in hospitality to more and more destinations all around the world.

‫رحلة جديدة مليئة باإلثارة‬ ‫مع االقرتاب من حتقيق اجناز جديد‪ ،‬ننظر إىل كل من اإلجنازات السابقة‬ ‫ومستقبل مشرق فيما نكشف عن الفصل التايل يف قصة روتانا‬ ‫—— ناصر النويس‪ ،‬رئيس جملس اإلدارة‪ ،‬روتانا‬

‫يشكل العام املقبل حدثًا هام لروتانا حيث سنحتفل باليوبيل الفضي لتأسيس‬ ‫الشركة‪ .‬وإذا نظرنا إىل الوراء على مدى ربع القرن املاضي‪ ،‬وعلى العديد ما مت‬ ‫حتقيقه والدروس املستقاة خالل هذه السنني‪ ،‬جند أن لدينا الكثري من االجنازات‬ ‫التي نفتخر بها كتحقيق رؤيتنا يف أن تصبح الشركة أحد الشركات الرائدة يف إدارة‬ ‫الفنادق يف املنطقة والعب مهيمن يف قطاع الضيافة وقطاع السياحة‪ .‬روتانا‬ ‫بدأت من فندقني يف عام ‪ 1993‬ومنت بسرعة ليصل اجملموع احلايل للفنادق التي‬ ‫نديرها إىل ‪ 58‬فندق ومنتجع ‪ -‬الرقم اآلخذ يف االرتفاع بفعل خططنا التوسعية‬ ‫والتي سرتى الشركة تدير ‪ 100‬منشأة فندقية بحلول عام ‪ .2020‬وفيما ننظر إىل‬ ‫العام املنصرم‪ ،‬شهد ‪ 2015‬افتتاح أول فندق لنا يف األردن‪ ،‬البوليفارد أرجان من‬ ‫روتانا‪ ،‬وأول فندقني يف تركيا‪ ،‬بورغو أرجان من روتانا‪ ،‬وتاجنو أرجان من روتانا‪،‬‬ ‫باإلضافة إىل فنادق جديدة يف أبوظبي والبحرين‪ .‬كما حصدنا ‪ 17‬جائزة دولية‪،‬‬ ‫والتي تضمنت نيلنا لقب العالمة الفندقية الرائدة يف منطقة الشرق األوسط خالل‬ ‫حفل توزيع جوائز السفر العاملية يف دولة اإلمارات العربية املتحدة‪ ،‬باإلضافة‬ ‫إىل تلقي جائزة أفضل برنامج والء للفنادق يف الشرق األوسط خالل حفل توزيع‬ ‫جوائز بيزنيس ترافلر الشرق األوسط يف كل من عامي ‪ 2015‬و‪ .2016‬وخالل العام‬ ‫املقبل‪ ،‬وصوال إىل الذكرى السنوية الـ‪ ،25‬سوف نبذل الكثري من اجلهد لوضع بعض‬ ‫اإلضافات الهامة للمحفظة واإلقدام على مغامرات جديدة يف وجهات جديدة‪.‬‬

‫وتشمل هذه االفتتاحات‪ ،‬فندق عمان روتانا‪ ،‬مشروعنا الثاين يف االردن باالضافة‬ ‫اىل العديد من الفنادق اجلديدة يف اململكة العربية السعودية مبا يف ذلك سنرتو‬ ‫شاهني يف جدة‪ ،‬سنرتو كورنيش يف اخلرب‪ ،‬سنرتو الواحة يف الرياض وسنرتو العليا‬ ‫يف عاصمة اململكة‪ .‬وبعد أن غطينا مناطق واسعة يف الشرق األوسط ومع استمرار‬ ‫توسعات الشركة‪ ،‬نحن نتطلع إىل أفريقيا يف املرحلة القادمة‪ .‬حيث يصادف هذا‬ ‫العام إطالق فندق كني بالزا أرجان من روتانا يف جمهورية الكونغو الدميقراطية‬ ‫والذي يقع يف قلب عاصمة البالد‪ ،‬كينشاسا‪ .‬ويف املستقبل القريب‪ ،‬سيتم افتتاح‬ ‫فنادق يف أفريقيا مبدن هامة كالغوس يف نيجرييا ويف العاصمة السودانية‪،‬‬ ‫اخلرطوم‪ .‬وهناك خمطط الفتتاح فنادق يف تنزانيا وموريتانيا فيما نحدد املواقع‬ ‫الرئيسية يف أفريقيا الستهداف توسعنا مبا يتماشى مع تطور سوق السفر والسياحة‬ ‫يف القارة السمراء‪ .‬ويف اجملموع‪ ،‬سوف يتم افتتاح ‪ 17‬فندقا بني عامي ‪2016‬‬ ‫و ‪ ،2017‬مما سيضيف ‪ 4,065‬وحدة فندقية حملفظتنا الفندقية لتصل إىل ‪75‬‬ ‫فندقا و ‪ 19,935‬غرفة‪ .‬وسوف نتطلع إىل كل األشياء املثرية اخملطط لها يف‬ ‫األشهر والسنوات القادمة‪ .‬نحن نتحدث عن عصر جديد كليًا لروتانا والذي سيتميز‬ ‫ليس فقط من حيث األرقام ولكن أيضا من خالل التطوير املستمر يف مستويات‬ ‫اخلدمة املقدمة يف جميع فنادقنا لنتمكن من االستمرار يف تقدمي األفضل يف‬ ‫جمال الضيافة‪.‬‬

‫إن مسجد الشيخ زايد الكبري يف أبو ظبي هو مثال اللمسة العربية‬ ‫َّ‬

‫حي على ما تتمتَّع به الهندسة الشرق أوسطية من‬ ‫مت ُّيز يف هذا العصر احلديث‪ ,‬فالزخرفة العربية التي‬ ‫تزين أعمدة املسجد الداخلية والتي تتضمن اخلط‬ ‫العربي والنقوش واملنحوتات املعقدة جتسد الديكور‬ ‫أن‬ ‫التقليدي ملنطقة الشرق األوسط‪ .‬وباإلضافة إىل َّ‬ ‫هذا املسجد هو جتسيد للهندسة العربية التقليدية‪,‬‬ ‫إ َّلا أنه يف نفس الوقت هو عبارة عن مزيج بني هذا الديكور‬ ‫التقليدي الذي َّ‬ ‫مت اعتماده لعقود طويلة يف الشرق‬ ‫األوسط وبني التصميم احلديث والعصري‪ ,‬وهذا ما‬ ‫معلما سياح ّيا عامل ّيا مميزًا‪.‬‬ ‫يجعله‬ ‫ً‬ ‫هناك الكثري من املعامل التي تتميز بتصميمها العربي‬ ‫التقليدي يف أبوظبي ويف مدن شرق أوسطية أخرى‬ ‫عديدة‪ ,‬وعلى سبيل املثال مسجد السلطان قابوس‬ ‫األكرب يف مسقط والذي يتخذ صفة تقليدية يف‬ ‫التصميم أكرث من معامل عربية أخرى مبا يف ذلك‬ ‫متحف الفن اإلسالمي يف قطر والذي يختلف من‬ ‫حيث التصميم الذي يجمع بني العراقة واحلداثة‪,‬‬ ‫فهذا املتحف هو عبارة عن مزيج بني النمط الكالسيكي‬ ‫وبني املفاهيم العصرية والذي كان الهدف منها ابتكار‬ ‫تصاميم تتالئم مع متطلبات العصر‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬و ‪ 2‬تصاميم لربيع وصيف ‪2016‬‬ ‫‪ 3‬و ‪ 4‬قطع من الموزاييك ‪ 5‬قاعدة أكواب‪ ,‬موزاييك‬ ‫‪ 6‬مجموعة فناجين وأطباق من الموزاييك‬

‫التقليد األدبي‬

‫الشرق األوسط لديه تاريخ أدبي المع من األعمال المعروفة‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫بدورها تفتح نافذة على العالم العربي عبر العصور وحتى يومنا هذا‬ ‫اما كنظرائهم يف الثقافات األخرى حول العامل‪ ،‬مل يكن من السهل على الكتّاب العرب الوصول إىل ما هم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عليه اآلن‪ .‬الرقابة‪ ،‬صعوبات النشر‪ ،‬فرص الرتويج الفقرية‪ ،‬البريوقراطية‪ ،‬مشاكل التوزيع والرتجمة هي جزء‬ ‫صغري من العقبات التقليدية التي واجهت الكتّاب الطموحني يف املنطقة‪ ،‬ويف العديد من احلاالت‪ ،‬يجب‬ ‫عليهم التّغلب على هذه الصعوبات لنشر كتاباتهم اليوم‪ .‬وعلى الرغم من هذه اإلنتكاسات‪ ،‬شهد األدب‬ ‫العربي نهضة يف السنوات األخرية‪ ،‬مع زيادة االهتمام الكبري ليس على الصعيد احمللي بل على املستوى‬ ‫وبشكل حاسم‪ ،‬حيث الطلب على اخليال املعاصر من الشرق األوسط يرتفع من عامل متش ّوق‬ ‫الدويل أيضا‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫لفهم أعراف وأخالق هذا احمليط الرائع فكلما اكتشفته‪ ،‬كلما زاد حبك له‪.‬‬ ‫‪ — 24‬جم ّلة روتانا‬
