LETTER FROM THE EDITOR As national Covid-19 vaccination plans progress, we are gradually regaining normalcy. Proof of this is that last May, we participated for the first time after more than a year in one of the most important sectoral fairs of the Russian market, VIV Russia Meat & Poultry. As a result, our sales team moved to Moscow to meet our customers again in the country. In addition, during the event, the new system of control level of silos of Rotecna, Silotronic was presented, which we also offer in this edition of the Rotecna World. Following the fair calendar, we are already immersed, and with exceptional enthusiasm, in the preparations of FIGAN, which will be held from the 7th to the 10th of September in Zaragoza. We look forward to attending and making this appointment another meeting point with our customers so that they can discover our news first-hand, and for us to be aware of their concerns, and thus always be able to offer the best solution to each of their needs. With the spread of Covid-19, the concept of “one health” has become more important, and this disease has shown how important it is to address healthrelated issues from a more holistic perspective that takes into account human, animal, and environmental well-being. The fact that in just over a year a vaccine for the coronavirus has been developed is an example of the effectiveness of the work under this concept. In this Rotecna World, we address this issue by talking with Natalia Majo, a member of the One Health Commission that has promoted the College of Veterinarians of Catalonia. We hope that together with the rest of the contents we have prepared, it will be of interest to you. Antonio Pinos, Rotecna’s CEO.

ROTECNANEWS WASTE MANAGEMENT IN ROTECNA

It is more responsible and economical to manufacture new products from recyclable materials.

All waste is deposited sorted in labeled clean points. Photo: Rotecna.

Separating waste may seem like a tedious task. Still, it is essential to give some materials a “second chance”, reduce the extraction of raw materials such as plastic, and save production costs. Rotecna has a waste management plan that describes what to do with each of them to do it correctly. Polypropylene is the material with which more products are manufactured in Rotecna. Therefore, it is also the waste that is generated the most. In 2020 alone, some 5,923 tons were injected. 3% of this plastic could be reused after passing through the mill in the company. “After crushing the plastic, we put it in big bags, and we get a quality sample to analyse it and check that the properties of this material have not been altered. When we have verified the quality of this polypropylene, it is used again in our injection machines to manufacture new products”, explains Marta Nadal, head of the Quality and Environment Department of Rotecna. Plastic is not the only waste generated from the company’s industrial activity. Aerosols, 4

scrap, oils, batteries, or contaminated packaging are some of the other waste that needs to be appropriately recycled. Garbage can be separated according to whether it is industrial or light. On the one hand, industrial waste has two subcategories: hazardous waste (substances which, because of their chemical composition or characteristics, pose a danger to public health and the environment, so that they have to be managed separately), and non-hazardous waste (including paper and cardboard, wooden pallets). On the other hand, scrap, electrical cable or banal waste). Rotecna operators must take them to one of the several “clean points” appointed in the company to separate the waste correctly. Each of them is identified with a label and a code. As for industrial waste, Marta explains that “from quality control, we make continuous inventories, and when we see that we have a large quantity, we contact the corresponding manager to come to collect the waste”. Rotecna has contracts with several managers that establish how each waste

has to be dealt with, and that is that, before the law, the company is responsible for the correct management of each of them. In this way, the company has to specify how it will handle them and their management routes. These are grouped into three main groups: reuse or recovery, output as a by-product, and elimination or disposal of rejection. With hazardous waste, proper management means carrying out adequate packaging, labelling and storage within the facilities where it is generated. Once the containers to store this waste are filled, they must be delivered to the authorised manager within a maximum period of six months. On the other hand, waste such as plastic film, paper and cardboard, and pallets, are stored in a compactor, which is large-capacity containers. When they are complete, the corresponding manager is notified, who travels to the company to remove the waste. Rotecna has installed several “clean points” with paper, plastic, organic, and other containers concerning light waste. With the start of the door-to-door collection system in Agramunt, a review has been conducted to manage this waste within the company, and it has been verified that all sections have four containers. Previously, an internal announcement was sent to workers reporting this new system so that they knew what has to be thrown into each receptacle. Therefore, this waste management is precisely the same as done at home, and the people in charge of each section are responsible for removing the containers on suitable days.

The company has its own mill to reuse plastic. Photo: Rotecna.

The department of Quality and Environment manages waste through a platform of the Generalitat called the Documentary Waste System (SDR). This tool, commonly used by all companies, allows you to carry out procedures, such as registering as a producer, filling in waste acceptance forms, monitoring sheets, and obtaining information. To be as sustainable as possible and environmentally friendly, we need to be careful about waste management. If we do this correctly, we will contribute to giving our waste a “second chance” and reducing the volume of rubbish that ends up buried in landfills, we will reduce the extraction of raw materials such as plastic, glass, or metals, which can be reused to produce new products, and we will save costs, both in waste management and in the manufacturing of new products, since it is more economical to manage products separately than to recover them from already mixed waste. In short, it is more responsible and economical to manufacture new products from recyclable materials than to extract new raw materials. 5

SOMETHINGABOUT GUIMERÀ, MEDIEVAL CHARM IN URGELL

General view of Guimerà.

Guimerà is a small village located in Urgell (Lleida) on the banks of the Corb River. Strolling through its beautiful streets means embarking on a journey into the past that leaves no one indifferent. And it is its houses and corners that, with a very vivid medieval countenance, are distributed on the constant ups and downs of the land on which it sits, forming an original layout of architectural forms. This idyllic place stands out for its location, the foothills of a hill, a position that allows you to dominate the valley in which it is located, and for the different places of interest that can be visited.

Vallsanta Convent Already from the road, shortly before we reach the village, we can see the ruins of the Convent of Vallsanta. This Cistercian women’s 6

convent was built in 1235 to replace the Convent of Santa María de Bovera, which was in deplorable conditions because of lack of water. In 1429, 23 nuns moved to Vallsanta and resided in the convent until 1589. The abbot of Poblet ordered his transfer to the Monastery of Santa María del Pedregal. Because of various plagues, only three nuns remained, and the debts accumulated. This was the beginning of the end, as the convent became merely vestiges of what it once was from its abandonment.

The streets of Guimerà and its castle Once we arrive at the village, we enter the Middle Ages as we walk through charming streets where arches and stone houses form an extraordinary setting. And going up from street to street, passing through various viewpoints that offer views of the landscape, we reach the ruins of the castle, an imposing fortress of the

eleventh century, from which only remains a vital part of the tower that seems to keep an eye on the whole valley. The castle was built in the eleventh century by Christians during the Reconquest on what was an ancient Iberian village and was part of a defensive line that Ramón Berenguer I created to defend the region of the Segarra as it has a strategic place in the Corb Valley. Several noble families stayed at the fortress, who held the title of Barons of Guimerà. Finally, the castle was destroyed in 1835 during the First Carlist War, and until it was restored in the twentieth century, it was used as a quarry by the population. Close to the ruins of the castle is the Gothicstyle church of Santa Maria, built in the fourteenth century because of the significant growth that Guimerà experienced at the time.

For one weekend a year, Guimerà returns to Middle Ages with its Medieval Market. Medieval Market For one weekend a year, in August, the inhabitants of this small town, along with thousands of visitors, return to a Middle Ages market through the streets of Guimerà. For two days, about a hundred shops with products of the time, and twenty artisans who offer demonstrations of the trades of the time (forge, macramé, basketry, works on parchment, etc.), can be visited through the streets of the municipality. In addition, the market also offers its visitors walkways, sketches of medieval daily life, shows, juggling workshops, among many other proposals.

SILOTRONIC

Ensuring the availability of feed in silos, calculating the replenishment periods of silos and having up-to-date information on the levels that can be shared with the integrator or feed factory are factors that optimise supply logistics and represent significant time and cost savings for both parties, livestock and the feed supply company. ACCURACY To provide a solution to this need, Rotecna has the Silotronic, a sensor that uses laser technology to measure the level of feed inside silos very accurately. This allows the farmer to know, in real-time and from any device with an internet connection, the level of feed available on the premises. The Silotronic can be installed in all types of storage systems: silos, tanks or hoppers in any shape, dimension and material. 8

With a measuring range of up to 25 meters, the device is quickly and easily installed on top of the silo. In addition, it does not need cables or commissioning, as it is factory programmed. RESOURCE OPTIMISATION The installation of the Silotronic system represents a significant improvement in the control of feedstocks on farms, both for the farmer and the suppliers. In addition, resources are optimised in planning loads and distribution

WIRELESS REAL-TIME SILO CONTENT CONTROL SYSTEM

routes since it has a geolocation system that allows efficient management of procurement logistics. All this helps calculate the optimal way to supply the silos, thus reducing transport costs and avoiding the return of the excess product. SILOTRONIC SOFTWARE Access to the data can be done very quickly through Silotronic software, which means that, in addition to checking stocks in real-time, you can also access historical data on the evolution of silo content to detect possible anomalies in consumption, see replenishment periods and schedule low-level warning alarms. The software is designed to be an easy to use and practical tool. Each user creates their profile to access all the information regarding their installations from any device connected to the Internet (computer or mobile). HOW DOES IT WORK?

FEATURES • Laser reading. • Avoids visual control from the top of the silo. • Long battery life. • Extensive coverage network. • Communication of readings to the data query platform by radiofrequency or Ethernet. • Access to the data platform through any device with an internet connection.

ADVANTAGES • Real-time feed level monitoring. • Watertight system. • Read data every two hours (customisable). • Easy installation, no wiring and factory scheduled. • Significant savings in logistical costs. • Increases job security. • Virtually maintenance-free.

Through the Silotronic software, the user can visualise the status of all the sensors installed, control the history of readings, see the evolution of the state of the silos and modify parameters such as feed density. Through a very intuitive colour-code, it shows the status of the silos. 9

READER AND SMARTPHONE

DOSITRONIC

With the desire to improve the daily work of farmers and animal welfare, Rotecna has redesigned the dositronic e-feed system’s chip reading and communication system, incorporating a new reader and smartphone that complement the range of this product family. With the new reader, you can perform RFID chip readings on the bristle crotals at a greater distance, without disturbing the animal; simultaneously, the farmer’s safety is guaranteed, and it is possible to maintain permanent user communication with the dositronic’s central software. On the other hand, the new smartphone offers immediate access to the data and allows you to make queries and make changes to the software from the same farrowing room or gestation areas.

FEATURES • Connection to the server via wifi. • Read HDX and FDX transponders. • Device is suitable for working in corrosive environments and is impact-resistant.

ADVANTAGES

10

• Allows a greater reading distance, which reduces the stress of the bristles. • Offers more excellent safety for the operator, as the reading of the crotal can be carried out without the need to insert the hand into the cage. • The reader has enough autonomy for the whole day.

GLOBALPIG A. CASSANYÉ: “THE TECNAPUR SYSTEM IS VERY VERSATILE, EASY TO USE AND HAS A LOW HANDLING COST”

With a capacity for 1,600 sows, the Cassanyé Farm belongs to the Gescaser family business, founded in 1973, and located in the town of Almacelles (Lleida). Swine farming has always been very present in Antonio Cassanyé’s day-to-day life. From a young age, he lived very close to his father’s farm, located in Almacelles (Lleida), and in 1998, at the end of his studies in Agronomy, he joined the family business. Aware of the environmental demands that the sector must face, last January, Cassanyé decided to install the Tecnapur solids and liquids separator. Over these months, the farmer has already seen first-hand the benefits of working with Rotecna’s slurry management system. What is the origin of the farm? Cassanyé Farm belongs to the family business Gescaser, founded in 1973. In its early days, the farm began as a 12

fattening farm. A few years later, after the good results obtained, my father decided to introduce the first sows, ten at first. Since then, the business has been growing, and after several renovations and expansions, the farm can currently accommodate some 1,600 bristles. How is it distributed? On the one hand, we have a gestation unit that has approximately 1,200 places. On the other hand, we also have a lactation unit with 400 slots, a replenishment with 500 spaces and a heat detection unit.

What led you to install Tecnapur’s mechanical slurry separation system? We decided over the last year, and we did so to comply with all the requirements set by environmental legislation regarding the treatment of slurry to move forward with our activity. That is, we decided to install Tecnapur to be more environmentally friendly and more selfsufficient. With this vision of the future, last January, we started implementing the Tecnapur separator, and now we are finishing the testing period to implement the

system throughout the farm. During this time, we have made all the necessary adjustments for the correct use of the system and to be able to extract the maximum nutrients from each of the slurry portions. How did you decide to go for the Tecnapur separator? We looked at several separation systems on the market, but they were more expensive, and their use seemed more complex. Finally, we decided on Rotecna’s solids and liquid separator because, compared to other systems, we consider the Tecnapur system to be very versatile, easy to use and has a low handling cost. How many cubic meters of slurry do you handle per day? Currently, the farm is generating about 50 – 60 cubic meters of slurry per day. Still, during the testing period, we have treated about 20 cubic meters a day to check the system’s operation. How do you handle the slurry through the separator? The slurry generated by the animals is collected in a reception raft in which we have an agitation system so that the slurry is always

homogeneous. There is also a pump that propels the slurry to the separator. The separator has a chamber with a flow regulator adjustable according to the slurry’s density, allowing us to handle more liquid and thicker slurry. In addition, this chamber has a retention system of unwanted solids that enables us to generate a solid portion without polluting materials, such as plastic fragments of crotals. After the camera exits, the slurry passes through a system of double-pressed and scratched sieves with round holes that prevent the passage of animal hair. Finally, we get the solid portion and the liquid portion. Regarding the initial volume of slurry, what percentage do you get from each portion? These first few months we are testing, and the proportion of slurry we input from the one we separate, the solid portion we obtain comes to about 15%. What do you do with each of the portions? The intention we have is to use the liquid portion for spray irrigation. As for the solid part, we have different options on the table. On the one hand, there is the option to allocate this portion to its use as composting and, on the other hand, take

13

GLOBALPIG it to management centres to use as a source to produce biogas, compost, etc. At the farm level, what is the cost of separating in terms of labour, electricity consumption, etc.? First, the cost of managing the liquid portion is reduced since we use it to water, and therefore we do not have to move it with vats. Secondly, the machine has low power consumption. Finally, it operates automatically with very little maintenance, so its cost for labour, which is very small, is intended for cleaning, greasing and general maintenance. The farm worksunder with the agitator to homogenize Piglets resting the slurry. Rotecna. the Ni-2 Weaner. Photo: Rotecna.

What other Rotecna products do you have installed? In addition to the separator, we have installed polypropylene panels, plates for piglets and some hoppers. We decided on these products because they’re from a brand that I have known for years and that is fully established within the sector because of the quality it offers. Rotecna’s products work very well for us, are durable, adapt very well to animals, and are easily managed by farm employees. What are your main health concerns? What biosecurity measures have you taken? We are exposed to multiple external factors that can influence our production, and the most important one is the threat of PPA, which seems to be close by. In this sense, to avoid the entry of any threat, we have an external fence and aviary fabrics. In addition, we 14

disinfect all vehicles when necessary. We have differentiated a dirty area and a clean area, etc. Are there any future challenges? At the business level, the main challenge is to produce quality meat. At the environmental level, we face demanding challenges that we hope to meet with creditworthiness with the Tecnapur system. In this sense, we will install two separators on two other farms of the company, and in one of them, we want to complete the system with the installation of the physicochemical reactor. Therefore, we want to be at the front line to make sure all challenges are opportunities.

FUTURENEWS NATÀLIA MAJÓ: “THE SINGLE-HEALTH APPROACH WILL IMPROVE ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE” The Catalonian College of Veterinarians has promoted the One Health Commission intending to work public health from a more comprehensive view. Natàlia Majó, veterinarian at the One Health Commission. Photo: Natàlia Majó.

The spread of COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of addressing health challenges from a comprehensive perspective. Aware of this, the One Health Commission has been established by the College of Veterinarians of Catalonia (CCVC). This agency aims to publicise and visualise a single health (human, animal and environmental) concept. In this committee, which is taking its first steps, professionals from different fields work to enhance a more holistic understanding of health. One of its members is Natàlia Majó. We talked with her about the first months of this committee and the challenges it faces. How was the One Health Commission born? The “one health” concept has been in existence for several years. In 2010, there was already a joint positioning of supranational institutions such as the OIE, FAO, and WHO related to this concept and the need for health professionals to work as a whole. Since then, several initiatives have allowed the idea to become increasingly better known, but it has been since the COVID19 pandemic that it has been highlighted. We have seen that about 60% of infectious diseases 16

that end up affecting humans have an animal reservoir, so zoonosis remains a public health challenge. To further this matter, we promoted this commission from the College of Veterinarians of Catalonia, born at the end of last year. What’s your goal? So far, we have held meetings to define future actions. We have promoted a first training course on the sensible use of antibiotics, organised by CCVC by veterinarians working with production animals. Our purpose is to work primarily from this more comprehensive vision of single health and make it known. We want to disseminate specific aspects where the concept of single health is essential, such as antimicrobial resistance. This topic is being worked on from this more holistic view, studying its impact on humans, animals and the environment, as this is an issue of great concern in all three areas. Why is it necessary to address diseases from a One Health viewpoint? As research progresses, it has been known that many diseases are interrelated. Without

going any further, we know that COVID-19 can infect animals, that the virus can be transmitted between them, and that, in some cases, it could pass on to humans. Studying this problem hesitantly means that specific issues are not addressed as effectively as possible. With the experience provided by professionals in all three fields, we can make it easier for these problems to be solved more quickly. In fact, in other countries where this concept is more advanced, we already find veterinarians in public health policy decision-making positions. This shows that health problems need to be addressed from a single health perspective. What impact can this comprehensive vision have on swine production? For the swine species, topics such as swine flu or antimicrobial resistance are already being investigated. We must be aware that these diseases can have a significant impact on production. Therefore, we must be more rigorous in their control and provide more resources for research, broadening their vision to improve diagnoses. Implementing the one health concept does not have a visible impact a priori but is a model that will make ideas and ways of doing change. Speaking of antimicrobial resistance, what does One Health propose? Swine farms are making a great effort to reduce antibiotic use. However, this reduction should be accompanied by several measures to help minimise the impact on production and improve animal health. These measures will need to be aimed at improving animal welfare, improving their feeding, implementing effective biosecurity measures, etc., so that they are less likely to develop diseases. The single-health approach will enhance animal health and welfare and help minimise antimicrobial use.

The pig sector is reducing the use of antibiotics. Photo: Rotecna.

What can pork veterinarians do about this? Veterinarians should not do much more than they are already doing. There are many challenges regarding animal health that we already know of and that are important. For example, we know that we should reduce treatments with these drugs by continuing with the aforementioned antimicrobial resistance. This is an objective already set by many production companies in the pork sector. It must be worked on, as reducing these resistances will not only increase the farm where it is being developed but also in general. Issues like this are having an increasing impact. What future challenges might the One Health Commission face? We have taken on the challenge to spread the message of this comprehensive health vision. Therefore, we must work together to respond to the difficulties and diseases that will appear among all health professionals, as we have now seen with the coronavirus. Thanks to research in different areas, the condition has been able to be monitored relatively quickly. The fact that there is a vaccine just one year after the pandemic emerges is a spectacular success. We intend to organise different conferences that address paradigmatic areas of one health concept to move forward in this way. 17

PIGPRODUCTIONIN ADVANCES IN ARGENTINA’S PORK SECTOR OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS

Thousand of tones.

Evolution of swine production in Argentina 2002 - 2020.

Low production costs and good health status support pig growth in Argentina. Exports and imports

For 20 years, Argentina’s pork sector has been growing tangibly year after year. Although it is a small sector in Argentina, efforts to eradicate classical swine fever (CFP), promoting pork consumption and export development have helped the country, traditionally an importer of pig products, become an exporter with sufficient capacity local fresh meat market. In addition, the country is characterised by its wide availability of areas and agro-ecological conditions suitable for the rearing of pigs, which cater to respecting animal welfare and protecting the environment.

Production The production of pork in Argentina has numerous advantages, such as the availability of maise and 18

soybeans, two foods that form the basis of feeding pigs and account for the main cost of production, a favourable climate, availability of fresh water and absence of health threats. All this contributes to Argentina being one of the countries with the lowest production costs. Thanks to these factors, Argentina produced 775,000 tonnes of pork by 2020, a very high number compared to the quantity produced in 2002, which was only 136,000 tonnes (Figure). Over the past 20 years, production has increased by around 10.3% each year, peaking in 2004 (18.3%) and 2013 (18.1%). The primary purpose of this meat is the production of cold cuts and other foodstuffs and fresh consumption.

In the first decade of the 2000s, Argentina exported little pork, but recognition as a swine fever-free country (CFP) made it a desirable commercial alternative. Thus, in 2008 there was already evidence of the first significant exports, but growth began to be important in 2015. Since then, Argentina has managed to place its pork products in 13 destinations, with China being its primary market, with a 67% of total exports. Currently, the share of exports relative to the total production is 5.4%. On the other hand, 2020 was the first year with a favourable trade balance in terms of the export-imports ratio, both in quantity and foreign exchange. Given this increase in exports, the Argentine government created a new process for meat exports in 2021.

Image of a pig farm in Argentina. Photo: Rotecna.

Regarding imports, it should be noted that Argentina imported 50% of the pork consumed in 1999. The situation was very different in 2020 when the country has reached only 2% of imports compared to production. Much of the imported meat comes from Brazil and is frozen unboned pork.

presented as an opportunity for the development and consolidation of swine production. Given the growth that has occurred over the past 20 years, the increase in the local fresh meat market and the increased share of exports, it is estimated that by 2030 the production of pork in Argentina will exceed 1.4 million tonnes.

Consumption According to data from the Argentine Association of Pig Producers, the consumption of pork in the country in 2017 became 14 kg per inhabitant per year, a figure that shows an upward trend in the consumption of this food in the country, especially if we take into consideration that, in 2012, consumption was 8.6 kg per inhabitant per year. However, the figure is lower than beef consumption, which is the most consumed meat in the country (57 kg per inhabitant per year). Despite this, the campaigns to promote pork contribute to this product increasingly present in Argentine dishes.

Future Argentina’s pork sector has achieved satisfactory results in recent years and has positioned itself as one of the fastest-growing sectors within the country’s agro-industrial area. In addition, the need to reduce beef consumption and the implementation of meat substitution policies are

For exports, it is estimated that they could exceed 10% of the total production. On this topic, the international shape of the markets presents scenarios where only those countries that can self-benefit from the resources necessary for their production, to compete. Something that Argentina easily complies with. With all this and thanks to the publicising of consumption and the development of new marketing channels, pork has found a place in the dish of Argentines and has an essential margin of growth. Therefore, in the coming years, it should be a priority to strengthen health controls to maintain the excellent status achieved (Argentine pigs are free of major diseases affecting the species), improve on issues such as sustainability, environmental impact or responsible use of antibiotics. Thus, Argentina has all the advantages to become a large pig producer. 19
