September 2021
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The arrival of COVID-19, more than 18 months ago, forced us to adapt promptly to a new reality. While some sectors of our economy were severely affected by the pandemic, the pig sector focused all its efforts on ensuring that the population continued being supplied with pork. A year and a half after the outbreak of the pandemic, we stop to analyze its impact on our sector. At a business level, we continue to bet on innovation and the application of new technologies in all our areas of action. Thus, for example, given the rapid advancement of digital marketing techniques, which for companies represents an opportunity for growth and visibility, this 2021 Rotena has bet and invested in the application of new tools to optimize our marketing actions. Specifically, we took the leap into marketing automation, which allows us, mainly, to carry out, manage and monitor all our campaigns and actions through email and the website www.rotecna.com. In parallel, this 2021, the firm has invested in augmented reality actions with insertions of AR experiences in our new catalog and we have created a 360-degree virtual tour with which the user can interact on our website. We invite you to live this online experience with us. Finally, we want to celebrate the return to the fairs after our presence at FIGAN this September. In addition to the illusion that the return to a great event like FIGAN represented, for us it was also a special edition since Evofeed, our multiphase feeding system for pigs in transition, was awarded by the organization of the contest in the section “Technical Innovations ”.

Thanks to new technologies, the world of marketing is advancing rapidly, representing an opportunity for growth and visualization for companies. Still, it is a disadvantage regarding the competition if you do not know how to make the most of it. Since 2018, Rotecna’s marketing department has been working to implement and exploit the existing tools in digital marketing to the maximum: social networks, corporate web, content blog, SEO optimization for search engines such as Google, email marketing... until making the jump in 2021 to marketing automation.
What is it? Marketing automation allows the making, management and control of many of the digital marketing activities that the company develops through software. In this case, Rotecna works with the Mautic software that allows us to launch email campaigns in an automated way, with the activation of automatic and concrete actions such as sending new informative, promotional emails, videos, etc., depending on the user’s behaviour. A whole chain of emails 4
that, at the same time, is monitored by the system to analyze its success and define the implementation of improvements for future campaigns. On the other hand, the platform also allows us to create forms, inserted visually on our website and social networks. Users provide us with their data in exchange for receiving valuable information. This functionality, pervasive in marketing automation, allows us to feed our database and segment it according to the different user profiles. In this way, we can carry out more effective actions to escort the user into becoming a potential client.
Virtual Tour 360° Parallel to marketing automation, in 2021, Rotecna has also invested in augmented reality (AR), with the inclusion of AR experiences in the new corporate catalogue and with the creation of a 360 degree Virtual Tour of the Rotecna Showroom (https://www.rotecna. com/en/tour-virtual/). Through the virtual tour, the Internet user can move around the showroom, view product by product, check its usefulness, view images, videos on how the product works, testimonials from farmers, live augmented reality experiences, etc.
Advantages Automation has meant a significant increase in the number of people who contact the company through the new digital channels. From now on, among the department’s unique challenges, we set out to continue analyzing the results to maintain and improve the growing trend in the digital environment, and continue betting on the use of new marketing tools.

SOMETHINGABOUT THE PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA
The Palau de la Música was conceived not only as a centre dedicated to music but also to the arts and cultural development.
General view of the auditorium of the Palau de la Música.
When we talk about Barcelona’s architecture, most people immediately think of Antoni Gaudí. While this talented architect brought some of the city’s most iconic buildings to life, Gaudí was not the only one who helped shape Barcelona’s urban landscape. One of the best examples is the Palau de la Música Catalana. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner — who was Gaudí’s teacher at the time — this building was conceived not only as a centre dedicated to music but also to the arts and cultural development. In 1997, the Palau de la Música was integrated into the UNESCO World Heritage list, highlighting its beauty and stylistic contributions to Barcelona’s art nouveau movement.
The history of the Palau de la Música The Palau de la Música Catalana has its origins in the Catalan Orfeón, a choral society founded by Lluís Millet and Amadeo Vives in 1891. This 6
group, a cultural landmark in the city, was looking to place its registered office. With this in mind, the society acquired land to build it in the neighbourhood of Sant Pere, in the Old City of Barcelona. The Catalan Orfeón commissioned the project from the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. As one of the founders of Catalan modernism, this architect had already carried out several important works in his hometown, including the Hospital de San Pablo and the Lleó Morera house a few steps from Gaudí’s Casa Batlló. The foundation stone was laid in 1905, and the work was completed three years later, in 1908. The building was subjected to two restorations and extensions in 1982 and 2000. In the two new buildings, a new façade open to a public square and the Petit Palau, a concert hall with a capacity for 540 people, were added.
Exterior From its beginnings, the Palau de la Música was thought of as a way to exalt the achievements and Catalan musicians’ potential, and that mission is evident from the outside. The building has two main façades: the original and the current one. The original façade used to be the only entrance to the concert hall. Made of red brick and ceramic decorations, this façade consists of two arches, and its columns include the original lockers. Above the main entrance, a terrace has 14 Corinthian columns, each covered with mosaics of different colours. Above them, we find the sculptures of three legendary composers Palestrina, Beethoven and Bach — as well as a large mosaic mural portraying a choir presided over by a queen. Originally, Domènech i Montaner had built another façade on the opposite street. However, it was blocked from sight, as it was located just in front of the San Francisco Church. In 1989, after the church’s demolition, a boulevard was built in front of this façade. In addition, the original façade was covered with a giant glass screen, from where the building is still accessible today.
Inside Inside, the Palau de la Música stands out for its light. The architect built the building on an iron frame, placing large windows and stained glass windows throughout. The lobby is decorated with warm-coloured ceramic tiles and parts, very art nouveau style. The main auditorium is undoubtedly the central axis of the building. The concert hall can accommodate 2049 people. Upon entering the room, theatrical and naturalistic influences in the space are evident: the ceiling is decorated with plant motifs — such as flowers, palm trees,
Exterior façade of the Palau de la Música.
and fruits — echoed in the stained glass windows on the sides of the room. Over the second floor pews, we also find elaborate glass chandeliers hanging from a series of mosaic-decorated semicircles representing peacocks’ tails. One of the auditorium’s most striking features is its inverted dial-shaped skylight. Made by Antoni Rigalt i Blanch, this element is approximately 20 meters long and represents a great sun that provides the room with natural light. In front of the room, we find two sculptures that frame the stage. One sculpture depicts the Wagner Valkyrie Ride on the right, with a Beethoven statue at the bottom. The one on the left, shaped like a tree, is a representation of popular Catalan music. The back of the stage is decorated with mosaics and sculptures representing the muses. These figures surround one of the crown jewels of the compound: the great organ made by the German Walck house in Ludwigsburg in 1908. Thus, it is no surprise that this venue has become a touchstone for symphonic music not only in Spain but throughout the world. 7

TACTILE DOSITRONIC M
Since its launch in 2016, Dositronic M, the comprehensive electronic control system of farrowing feeding, has been an effective dayto-day solution for many ranchers who have seen how thanks to this system, have obtained critical productive benefits while being able to reduce and simplify work.
The new Dositronic M also has a security system that, if you find a strange element among feed it is administering, triggers an alarm and stops Dositronic M. then issues a notification to the software platform for the operator to remove the foreign body and activates the electronic dispenser again.
Our I+D+i department has redesigned the product with a new version with a touch button panel and a more straightforward pin system that guarantees more significant tautness in connections within farrowing wards, where the use of high-pressure water cleaning systems are widespread and powerful. In this way, greater product durability is guaranteed.
The Dositronic M allows you to easily and intuitively apply individualized feeding strategies for each sow and maximize your feed and water consumption in farrowing. In this way, the system increases the milk production of the animals. It improves their state at the end of the farrowing phase, thus increasing the fertility and prolificacy of the next delivery.
TOUCH BUTTON AND NEW CONNECTION SYSTEM
BREEDERS HIGHLIGHT THE ADVANTAGES OF DOSITRONIC:
Ramon Farré. Vilves (Lleida): “During the summer months, the differences between the sows that gave birth in the rooms with Dositronic M compared to those who did not, were abysmal. The piglets that had been in the farrowing pens with Doistronic M grew more, and the sows showed no problems in their zeal.”
FEATURES: • DC motor of excellent reliability and precision. • Multiple installation possibilities. • The button panel is available on the right or left. • High capacity analysing feed consumption data.
ADVANTAGES: • Simpler, faster and safer installations. • Quick connection / disconnection plug. • Greater precision in the food supply. • Maintenance reduction.
Dionisio Torres. Baena (Córdoba): “It is a product that we are delighted with. We have recovered the physical condition of all the sows, and we also have the guarantee that they do not lose weight during lactation. Before using Dositronic, we always faced this type of problem; now, we can keep a daily check of each sow’s diet. The waste of feed is practically nil”.
Núria Erill. Isona i Conca Dellà (Lleida): “It is a highly visual, intuitive and easy to use dispenser that any farm worker can operate. It is straightforward at first glance, and it does not require much training, something important when we talk about worker rotation on farms. Once you have established a feeding curve, you practically do not have to touch anything”. 9
GLOBALPIG A. EROLES: “WITH THE DOSITRONIC WE SAVE A LOT OF TIME AT WORK” Located in Castellserà (Lleida), this farm with 500 sows has Rotecna’s Dositronic system for sows and pregnant sows. Early in his childhood, Albert Eroles knew that his future would be linked to pig breeding. After spending long hours on his father’s and grandfather’s farm, he entered the family business. Once he joined, the family began to make the first changes to the farm, fattening and hosting the first sows. Today, that fattening farm has been converted into a sows farm. In its efforts to develop its facilities, Eroles installed the electronic feeding system for sows and sows in gestation, Rotecna’s Dositronic. He tells us about the excellent results he has obtained. What is the origin of the farm? This farm was built by my grandfather and father around 1970, initially as a fattening farm. Years later, my father started introducing some 10
Albert Eroles, with his son Marcel and an employee on the farm Photo: Rotecna.
sows. Soon after, with my inclusion in the business, we increased the number of sows, we implemented a closed cycle. Now, with the collaboration of my son Marcel who a few years ago also joined the company, we are working only to have sows and weaning. How is the farm distributed? We currently have 298 places in copulation control, 530 in confirmed gestation and 180 in farrowing. Having removed fattening, we have redistributed the farm’s allocation units, and now we are trying to increase the number of sows to 1,000. To reach this number, we are
carrying out various expansion and improvement projects on our facilities. In this sense, a while ago, we decided to install the electronic feeding system for sows in farrowing and gestation. Why did you decide on the Dositronic electronic feeding system? The decision was mainly motivated by the change in emphasis of the farm activity, that is, by going from a closed cycle to just sows. Since Rotecna told us about this product, we thought it would fit very well with our farm. We found it an exciting development, and the truth is
that it has adapted to our needs very well. On the other hand, we also value the nearness to Rotecna and the long relationship that we have maintained with the company. What benefits would you highlight from using Dositronic? With the Dositronic system, both in farrowing and gestation, we save a lot of time, something that we consider very important in a farm like this in which only three people work. Specifically, we have gained time when feeding and cleaning feeders since, with this system, I do not waste feed. Then, being more specific, with Dositronic G, we have managed to get the sows to farrowing with outstanding levels of dorsal fat. And with the Dositronic M, the sows are calmer since they can eat whenever they want, which means an improvement in milk production and productivity of the farm. In addition, in summer, it has the added advantage that sows, which during the day usually eat less due to the heat, can eat more at night and in the cooler hours of the day. As for piglets, since sows eat better and produce more milk, the system helps them get to weaning with good weight. How many feeding curves do they work with? In farrowing pens, we have four feeding curves: one for first-timers, one for sows with proper weight, one for fat sows, and one for thin sows. How is the handling of the diet with the Dositronic? It is straightforward and intuitive, and its main advantage is that, in the same room, thanks to the incorporated LED panel, you can see everything: if the sow has eaten, if she hasn’t eaten, if there has been any problem ... It is also very comfortable to modify the feeding curve and apply it at the push of a button once the sow has given birth. 11
GLOBALPIG

In addition to Dositronic, what other Rotecna products have you installed on the farm? Almost all the equipment we have is from Rotecna: the water level valves, the slats, the dividing fences, the dispensers, the automatic ones for feeding, etc. In general, what do you value about Rotecna? Many of us have known and used their material, and one of the things we value most is the attention, proximity and closeness they have with farmers. In addition, the value for money is excellent, and continuously innovating gives us a lot of confidence. 12
On the other hand, what biosecurity measures do they adopt to reduce the risk of disease transmission? We have the usual measures to be followed on all pig farms: an external fence, a house that delineates the dirty area from the clean one, where everyone who enters the farm should change their clothes and shoes; we use chlorine dioxide when entering ships to disinfect our feet, hydroalcoholic gel for hands, etc. What may future challenges surface for the farm? Our priority is to finish and consolidate the expansion we are doing to produce safely and efficiently and introduce fattening again in a more remote area.
Scan the QR code with the mobile camera.
What does it mean to have all consumption data computerized? Being able to have all the consumption data on the computer is a convenient advantage since we can see how the sows feed, the amounts of food they eat, those who eat more and those who eat less, etc., and that is a great help to know the modifications that we must make, in the feeding curves, for example. This information is handy in maternity wards, but I especially want to highlight its usefulness in gestation, giving us excellent results.

FUTURENEWS WHAT IMPACT HAS COVID-19 HAD ON THE PORK SECTOR ? Professionals in the sector acted decisively and, adapting to an unusual situation, have worked to maintain their activity. Weaning pen. Photo: Rotecna.
The global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has put many sectors of our economy against the ropes, fighting day by day to continue their activity over the last few months. In this period, professionals in the pig sector (farmers, meat industry, transport, distribution, etc.) have done a great job. It has been possible to supply pork to the population. How has the sector managed to adapt to this challenging situation? What impact has the pandemic had on them? To know the answer to these questions, we spoke with Jaime Chico and Miguel Ángel Higuera, who offer us their take on these questions.
Adapting to a new reality The arrival of the first coronavirus cases at our 14
borders alarmed society, which with fear, uncertainty and ignorance, was forced to face a pandemic. These feelings also reached farms, where the priority was to maintain activity and produce with new protection systems. To cope with this unique situation, a protection guide against coronavirus was launched from the National Association of Pig Earners Producers (ANPROGAPOR) at the farm level to minimize contact between employees. “Farmworkers are aware of how work needs to be done to prevent animal infections, and what was done was to reinforce what was already done, that is to say, work to adapt these procedures to human protection, implementing
measures such as maintaining the separation between people, minimize the number of people in common areas or avoid sharing vehicles.”, Miguel Ángel Higuera exposes, director of ANPROGAPOR, who considers that the result of the measures developed was successful and that the cases of contagion between employees were minimal: “We can say that pork sector workers’ preparedness for bioprotection and safety has been exemplary”. In the meat industries and feed factories, the situation was not significantly different. To continue supplying society with pork, it was necessary to continue producing and maximize safety. As Jaime Chico, CEO of Agri-food Chico,

comments, “it was about protecting our people, but not as we were used to doing, but against a pandemic in which we required a series of PPE that, suddenly, was difficult to acquire due to their scarcity “. And he adds: “We spent 15 very intense days, in which we worked to structure the templates, we reinforced shifts and created bubble groups to continue production. Despite the risk of coming to work, people were brave and went to their jobs anyway”.
“Pork sector workers’ preparedness for bioprotection and safety has been exemplary”. Equally important were the efforts made by logistics to avoid pork shortages, especially in large areas. In this sense, transportation was not affected since, considered an essential service, the time and mobility limitations imposed by the authorities had a minimal impact in this regard. However, the closure of the Horeca canal and the increase in consumer demand did alter transport, and distribution programs, so significant efforts were necessary to avoid shortages. On the other hand, particular concerns arose that complicated
work regarding international transport, especially in the large seaports. This, in one way or another, had an impact on the global pork market.
The impact on the meat market According to official data regarding the last decade, in 2020, international sales of agrifood products have doubled (in 2010, they were around 28,000 million euros). They have grown at a much higher than the average rate since Spanish global exports only increased 40% in the same period. Thus, in an exercise marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector again demonstrated its character and increased its sales abroad. However, it should be mentioned that, in 2020, sales of the food industry overseas would have dropped slightly 0.9% had it not been for China and its massive pork purchases. Despite the atypical situation, 2020 has been a very successful year in pig exports, since almost three million tons have been reached, with a value close to 7.65 million euros. In the first two months of 2020 alone, 438,000 tons of pork worth 1,200 million euros were exported by Spain, representing 10.5% and 46%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019. Despite this increase in exports, container traffic problems in China, due to the impact of 15
FUTURENEWS production in the Asian giant and to the strong tensions that exist, the Chinese market still has a long way to go, although possibly without the increases we have seen so far. So we will have to offer products with more added value”.
“Pork sector has played a fundamental role and this should be shared for people to know about it.” The food industry has been active throughout the pandemic. Photo: Interporc.
the coronavirus, caused concern in exporting companies. In the following months, they saw how their exports to their main client decreased and did not recover until the middle of the year. However, it must be said that this is a cyclical trend repeated every year, although this time, the coronavirus has aggravated it. Despite this, of the total Spanish exports of 2020, around 40% went to China. “In summer, the price was much more competitive, causing China to import much more meat. In addition, the fact that Germany could not export to China due to PPP cases, caused Spanish exports to increase even more”, explains Higuera. So, in 2020 China established itself as the primary client of the Spanish pork sector, absorbing almost 40% of exports in volume and nearly 30% in value; exports to other traditional markets such as Portugal, France, South Korea or the Philippines fell back. The strong demand of the Asian giant would demonstrate, as Chico maintains, that “despite the concern that the coronavirus has generated, added to the one that has caused the recovery of 16
Consumption “People have been forced to stay at home and, if we add to the confinement the fact that pork is a regular food, this has caused that household consumption has not been greatly affected,” Higuera says. However, the closure of the channel Horeca has had an impact, for example, on the processed or Iberian. As Chico explains, “Iberian and cured products had tough times during 2020, since its consumption is more associated with restoration, so, at a general level, consumption data is not bad, but there is a difference between what is consumed in hospitality and what has been consumed in homes”. To enhance this consumption that has been lost in Horeca, different television campaigns have been launched from the interprofessional of pigs, taking advantage of the increase in television consumption caused by confinement. In this sense, Higuera explains that “the campaigns launched have had a greater impact than other years, and the one carried out to encourage the consumption of Iberian in homes had a frankly positive impact”. Furthermore, the pandemic has fueled the sale online dramatically, which in 2020 experienced
growth due to confinement. For Chico, the increase in this channel marks the beginning of a multi-channel stage, in which the online will be one more. “This sale will remain there, but we have to see how we complement it with the other channels and how we enhance it since selling our product online is not an easy task either,” he says. With everything mentioned above, if we consider the closing down that the Horeca channel has suffered for months, with the consumption improvement and the consolidation of new channels, forecasts point to a stabilization stage in pork consumption.
Future opportunities The situation experienced in the last year and a half has shown that the pig sector has been one of the sectors that has adapted best and coped with the pandemic. In this sense, Chico asserts that “within the meat sector, pork has played a fundamental role and this should be shared for people to know about it”. And he adds: “We are
Farrowing pen. Photo: Rotecna.
becoming leaders, and we must convince people to support us and help us improve”. On the improvement routes to be implemented, Higuera mentions developing a rural economy and resources. “We have to have tools capable of reducing emissions, and that has to be key to empower and position our sector”. For his part, Chico adds: “We must invest in innovation and make our industries more sustainable. Digital innovation must move us forward, while the digitization of our work centres and teams must help us to understand our animals better and improve their well-being”. Finally, we must not forget the opportunities offered by opening new foreign markets and consolidating most of the existing ones. In this way, Spanish pigs must take advantage. They will do so of the opportunities offered by countries such as China, aware that the sector applies a highly demanding production model in terms of sustainability and animal welfare, food safety and quality.

PIGPRODUCTIONIN JAPAN CONSOLIDATES ITS POSITION AS A STRATEGIC MARKET FOR EXPORTING COUNTRIES
Japanese pork production is insufficient to cover national demand, which has led Japan to be the second-largest importer worldwide.
Farrowing farm in Japan. Photo: Rotecna.
In recent years, Japan has positioned itself as the tenth country with the most pork produced worldwide. However, its production is insufficient to cover national demand, making the Japanese country a large strategic market. Spanish exporting companies have known how to take advantage of this market niche and have made Spain the third country that exports the most pork to Japan in terms of value and the fourth in terms of volume.
Production According to the study Meat Market Review FAO, published in April 2020, Japan ranks tenth in its ranking of the world pig meat producers. In 2020 alone, the Japanese country produced more than 18
900,000 tons of pork, mainly in the Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Hokkaido areas. These regions had 30.5% of all national production. Despite being one of the largest producing countries, local production cannot meet domestic demand due to the low land devoted to livestock, farms’ low profitability, and strict environmental and health regulations. For this reason, there is a significant dependence on imports, and 50% of the pork consumed in Japan comes from abroad.
Imports Pork imports have reached 923,835 tons in the last year (7.4% less than in 2019) and 496,109 million yen (about
4,070 million euros). Between 2016 and 2020 (Graph 1), imports became more relevant worldwide, placing Japan as the second-largest importer of pork in the world, only behind China. However, due to restaurants’ temporary closure due to the global pandemic, in 2020, Japanese imports decreased compared to 2019 (-6.4%). Despite this, the global data for 2020 is higher than for 2016, mainly thanks to imports of fresh and refrigerated meat. Regarding Spain’s role in the Japanese market, the country has consolidated its third position in global ranking by value and fourth position by volume, after being surpassed by Mexico in 2020. According to data from Japanese customs, Spanish imports of pork in Japan have experienced

an increase of 20.6% in value figures in the 2016-2020 period, while growth in volume figures has been 16.9 %. Although import data is lower than in previous years, the evolution of the Spanish trend is positive and presents optimistic expectations in the medium term.
Local product value Faced with increased imports, local producers have tried to maintain their market share by distinguishing local meat through the quality of the “Made in Japan” product so that local origin is considered as an added value. This strategy is part of the plan of the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, which works to promote the local origin of the products, instead of fighting for the price.
Consumption The consumption of pork in the country has experienced an increasing rise in recent years, parallel to the growing influence of western cuisine and the decrease in fish consumption, factors that have positioned Japan, in terms of demand, as the sixth-largest market for pig meat by volume, only surpassed by China, USA, Germany, Russia and Brazil.
According to data from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Japanese households disbursed an average of 56 euros a year in their shopping baskets in 2018. In 2019, this amount rose to 62 euros. To this should be added the consumption made in takeaway food and the Horeca channel, both very relevant in Japan. This meat consumption has been higher among the younger population, whose diet is moving away from the traditional Japanese one, where fish and vegetables prevail. On the other hand, the consumption of Spanish ham is also growing in Japan. This food is usually consumed outside the home, mainly in Spanish restaurants, although it is increasing in supermarkets. The emergence of COVID-19 has also meant a modification in consumption habits and distribution channels. In this sense, the Horeca channel has seen its importance drastically reduced. On the contrary, consumption has become highly relevant in-home, where prepared dishes have enjoyed tremendous acceptance and demand.
Future The pork market in Japan is in a mature phase and still has positive growth figures. According to Euromonitor data, sales have increased 1.6% between 2014 and 2019, and growth is estimated to reach 4.3% in 2024. 19
