LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Now that it seems that the health situation is stable, the cost of raw agricultural materials has become a headache for many farmers, who not only have to face the increase in the price of their animals’ food, but also have to assume the climb in the energy cost and the generalized inflation that already coexists with us. In this context full of snags, Rotecna continues to fight to fulfil its mission: to support pig farmers by offering the most efficient solutions for the care and welfare of their animals. We continue to work and bet on developing the best products with innovation as a motif. Now more than ever, delivering maximum efficiency is essential to minimising costs; that is the direction in which our company leads, and it does so backed by its more than 30 years of experience in the sector, its team of professionals and something as important as the trust of its customers. At the same time, we continue with our purpose of giving our brand visibility in all corners of the planet. Along these lines, in recent months we have participated in fairs and congresses held in Mexico, Japan and Portugal, in June we travelled to the World Pork Expo, which is held in Iowa (United States), and in August we will be in Ildex Vietnam, and in autumn we will attend the great European livestock event, the Eurotier fair, which will be held from November 15 to 18 in the German city of Hannover.

As the year progresses, from Rotecna we continue to travel to different parts of the planet to participate in fairs and events in the pig sector. Throughout the second quarter of 2022, we have been in Lleida, Japan, and Mexico.

Porciforum Lleida From March 23 to 24, the Llotja de Lleida hosted a new edition of the Porciforum congress, which was attended by both national and international specialists who spoke about current issues that are affecting the Spanish pig sector. In this edition, after the pandemic, the exhibition area was recovered, in which Rotecna was present with some of its latest novelties such as the Silotronic, the silo level control system in real-time; the touch Dositronic M, an electronic feeding system for farrowing; and the Tecnapur brand, which provides solutions for slurry management. A good meeting point with clients and professionals in the sector. 4

From April 27 to 29, Rotecna travelled to Japan to participate in the IPPS International fair, together with our distributors in the country, NK Trading and Innocent, through whom we presented to the Japanese pig sector our wide range of products, highlighting the latest electronic novelties of the brand. This edition has had significant participation of national and international exhibitors and good figures of attendance of the professional public, with a key interest in the products that were presented.

OPORMEX Mexico The Opormex 2022 Conference held from May 4 to 7 was the first conference jointly organised in Mexico, between the two associations of pig farmers in the country: Oporpa and the Confederation of Mexican Pig Farmers. A conference planned for 2020, but that was postponed due to the pandemic, and that has finally been able to be held with great expectation this 2022. With an excellent attendance of professionals and representatives of the main companies in the national and international sector, Rotecna has been present hand in hand with its distributor in the country, the NS Group. Among the exhibitors, there was a very good international presence, with European, American, and Latin American suppliers.

SOMETHINGABOUT THE FESTIVITIES OF GRACIA

The festivities of Gracia are the most famous and the ones that attract the most public in Barcelona.

A street decorated in the neighbourhood of Gracia.

August is the month of renowned popular events. And there are many cities and towns that every year look forward to the arrival of summer to celebrate their most traditional and important festivities. In the case of Barcelona, the most coveted patron saint festivities are the Gracia festivities, which are celebrated in the iconic neighbourhood of Barcelona. In its program, there is no shortage of concerts, “castellers”, popular dances, giants, “big-heads” and the emblematic “correfoc”, “bastoners” and “trabucaires”. The “Festa Major” de Gracia is a grand event in the Catalan capital. Although these are not the main festivals of the city, as the festivities of La Mercè are, those of Gracia are the most famous and the ones that attract the most public.

The origin of the festivities The origin of the Gracia festivities dates back to 1817. Initially, the festivities of Gracia took place coinciding with the festivity of San 6

Isidro (May 15), since it was the patron saint of farmers and the Villa de Gracia, then a small town whose inhabitants were dedicated mainly to agriculture. Years later, due to the demographic increase of its population, workers, artisans or small merchants lived in its streets, beyond the farmers, and the monks who lived in the convent that was between the city and the Villa de Gracia, they celebrated another party on August 15, with which they decided to move their festivities to the summer month and make them coincide with the so-called Virgin of August.

What to do in the festivities of Gracia The most important event of this festivity is the contest for the decoration of streets and balconies organised by the neighbours of the neighbourhood of Gracia. A spectacle of colour reigns during those days in avenues, squares, and boulevards with a specific theme that the

The sreets of Gracia are full of color and people during its festivities.

neighbours prepare months in advance and that turns the neighbourhood into a genuine setting full of tales and creativity. Thus, those who tour these areas can enjoy an entire exhibition of art and originality. Although the main attraction of these festivities is the decoration contest of streets and squares, many activities are carried out during these seven days, intended for all ages. And of course, music also has its share of prominence. In the concerts of the festivities of Gracia, variety cannot be left out: traditional Catalan music, parades or well-known groups fill the stages of the streets of the neighbourhood with joy, and since each corner has a stage, such as the Plaça de la Vila or the Plaça del Sol, where concerts of better-known groups are organised while in the Plaça del Raspall the Alternative Festa Major is organised, a more vindictive one.

Samples of popular culture abound during the days when the festivities take place. Different parades are held in which the festive imagery of the neighbourhood parades, such as its giants, “big heads”, popular dances, etc. In addition, the performance of its “castellers” has become another of the parties’ main attractions. Being present especially since the birth of the local association, in 1997, it has been established year after year thanks to the three events that are held during the holidays, the most important being the “Diada Castellera de la Festa Major”, a great performance in which other invited groups participate, in addition to the local group. And for the finishing touch, a great “correfoc” takes place with devils and beasts of the groups of the neighbourhood along with some guest groups on the last night of the parties. Once the “correfoc” is over, the festivities close with a fireworks display.

On the other hand, the gastronomy of the land is also extolled during the days of the festivities of Gracia with gastronomic routes throughout the neighbourhood, popular lunches and dinners such as the traditional “butifarrada” de Gracia.

For all these reasons, the Generalitat de Catalunya declared the festivities of Gracia as a Traditional Festival of National Interest on July 30, 1997, and awarded the federation that organises it with the “Creu de Sant Jordi” in 2018. 7

SEVEN, SIMPLICITY AND EASY HANDLING

The objective of feeding in the gestation phase is that sows reach farrowing with an ideal body state. In this sense, individual dispensers are a very widespread feeding system for sows in the gestation phase, since it allows for precise regulation of the appropriate feed dose for each animal. Aware of this, Rotecna has developed the Dispenser SEVEN. Available with 7 litres of capacity, its simplicity and easy handling make it a good option to apply in the gestation and fattening phases. The SEVEN is a side filling dispenser and ball opening system to feed the animals in a restricted way that allows direct connection to down spouts of Ø70 and Ø75 mm without adapters. Robustness, versatility, sealing and easy handling are some of this new dispenser’s advantages, which as in the other models of Rotecna dispensers, allow you to accurately regulate the amount of food that will be supplied to each animal and see the inside thanks to its translucent body. The lower cone is easily removable and also has a side cover to access the interior and facilitate cleaning. 8

INSTALLATION WITH OPTIMISED FUNCTIONS

DOSITRONIC G NEWS: • KEYPAD WITH CAPACITIVE TOUCH SENSOR, which prevents the wear of the graphics on traditional buttons. • PUSH-IN CONNECTORS, much faster to connect, allowing easy and quick installation. Three years after its launch, the installation of the Dositronic G, the gestation electronic feeding system, has played a very important and efficient role in feed management in this phase. The Dositronic G allows pregnant sows to be fed individually in a controlled and individualised way according to their needs, improving the body condition upon arrival at farrowing and significantly reducing feed waste.

• WIRING WITH ANTI-RODENT PROTECTION INCLUDED, so it is not necessary to protect the cables against rodents during installation. • EMERGENCY SYSTEM that allows feeding the animals, even if there is no communication with the server.

NEW OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES: Thanks to this system, there are already many farmers who have been able to improve the productive statistics of their farms, while they have been able to optimise the work in gestation. To improve even more the advantages of this system, the R+D+i department of Rotecna has redesigned the Dositronic G. in the new version with a keypad with a touch sensor, a new connector system and a faster cable connection that includes an anti-rodent protective mesh.

Sow marker: Accessory installable in each box, which allows marking the previously selected sows in the user program with spray. Heat detector: A system that allows the user to detect and mark sows that haven’t become pregnant when in heat, precisely and automatically. 9

GLOBALPIG A. INIESTA: “THE SILOTRONIC ALLOWS YOU TO FINE-TUNE WHAT FEED NEEDS YOU MAY HAVE PER DAY AND NOT HAVE A SURPLUS” He has had a total of 39 Silotronic installed in four different breeding, transition and fattening farms, located in Utiel (Valencia).

Aitor Iniesta at the breeding farm in Utiel (Valencia). Photo: Rotecna.

Offspring of a family of farmers, in 2011, Aitor Iniesta decided to join Expoinor, the family business, and wager on expanding the endeavour. Thus, in addition to giving continuity to the fattening farms, he built a breeding farm with 1,000 sows, which in 2017 expanded to the 3,000 sows it currently has. After years of relying on Rotecna and its products, in 2022 he has installed a total of 39 Silotronics, a real-time silo level control system, to optimise the feed and fuel consumption of all its farms and improve the logistics of raw material orders with the feed mill and the integrator. Why did you decide to devote yourself to livestock? My grandparents and parents have always been committed to pig breeding and agriculture, so I continued with the tradition. Until I joined the family business, they had always been devoted to fattening and, it was when I joined, in 2011, that we started with sows. First with 1,000 breeding 10

sows and, in 2017, we expanded to 3,000 sows that are the ones we currently have. We also have 13,500 spots for transitional piglets from 6 to 20 kilos and 9,000 fattening spots. You have recently installed Rotecna’s Silotronic real-time silo level control system on your farms. Why did you decide to install this system? Mainly to control the stock of the raw materials we have on farms, not only feed but also fuels. It is a way to calculate the consumption that we have within each farm daily, supervise possible excesses of consumption that we may have in some warehouses, optimise the management of feed orders with the factory and the integrator, and even the fuel orders for the farms. How many Silotronics do you have installed? In total, we have 39 Silotronics installed on four different farms; 19 on the breeding farm, 7 on the transition farm, 7 on one of the bait farms and 6 more on the second bait farm.

What is the daily work you do with Silotronic software? It is very simple, we open the application and, farm by farm, we see the status in which the silos are and export the information in an Excel sheet to analyse the consumption. On the other hand, we also have the possibility of creating alerts so that if the volume in any of the silos falls below a certain level, we receive a notice via email. What are the main advantages you would highlight from working with Silotronic? For me, one of the main advantages is a matter of time, since you do not have to manually check each of the silos, and even a matter of safety, since we avoid certain accidents that can be caused when climbing the silos. Finally, as it is a computerized system, we greatly reduce the possibility of any human error. We are talking about that we have 39 silos that, if you want to check daily, a person has to go silo by silo, with the consequent error that can be generated at the time of communication between the person who looks at it, the one who receives the information and the person who places the order. In this way, through the Silotronic it is a very fast and visual way to know in what state all the silos are, the consumption I have (of feed and fuel) and even when I can last with it. In addition, all this information can be shared with the feed mill or with the person who takes care of the orders within the feed mill or integrator, so the logistics of all raw materials are simpler and more comfortable. What are the benefits of having silo data in real-time? The main advantage in our farm I see in the feedlots, especially at the end of breeding, when you are already taking out the animals because it allows you to fine-tune what feed needs you

Aitor with the Silotronic management program. Photo: Rotecna.

have per day. Knowing the number of animals you have left and the consumption per animal daily, you can fine-tune the final order of feed so that you do not have a surplus of feed and have to remove it with a sucker with the economic cost that this implies for the farmer, or have to leave the feed in the silo and that this can affect the subsequent breeding. As for sow farms and transition, the Silotronic is also very useful, but in this case, we use it more for fuel control and more now that it is very expensive. In this way, we can see if with any adjustments we can achieve an improvement in daily fuel consumption within the farm or not. Even so, sometimes if we ask for fuel from a factory other than the usual one, we can see, by the consumption in periods of 6-8 days, if it meets the same standards at combustion or not. In terms of costs, are there economic savings when working with Silotronic? Beyond the saving of the time spent reviewing the silos, which with the Silotronic is very little compared to the manual method, what can 11

GLOBALPIG profiles that can only access the data of the silos of one, two, three or four farms. In the case of the integrator, accessing the state of the silos helps them, especially, to complete the last days of an upbringing until closing. Until now, I used to tell the integrator the amount of feed I thought had been left over, now they know exactly how much feed has been left in the silo, so they can make the closure with more accurate data.

help you most to have an economic profitability thanks to the use of this system, is the decisionmaking capacity that it offers you regarding what you can do on the farm to optimise feed and fuel consumption. Is Silotronic’s software easy to use? It is a very simple and intuitive system, I do not see any complexity. In the computer program and the app, everything is very well separated by farms, types of feed, and fuels … Then you can see how all the silos are doing, and sort them by number or names of silos. You have many options. I, personally, always check the data from my mobile, but it can also be done from the computer, from a tablet or on any device with an internet connection. Do you share the data with the integrator you work with? The program allows you to create several users with different permissions to access and modify the information. In this sense, my user would be the administrator, that is, the one who has access to change any parameter of the system: weighing, volume, silos, farms … and then some operators of the farm and the integrator have specific 12

What other products has Rotecna installed on your farms? We have several Rotecna products. A few years ago, we set up the Tecnapur system for the management of livestock droppings, we also have the Dositronic electronic feeding system in farrowing, and then hoppers, feed distribution systems, dispensers, floors … A bit of the whole range that Rotecna offers. In general, what do you value about the Rotecna brand? What farmers always value in any company is the balance between price and quality. For me, the quality result with Rotecna has always been very good and in terms of price, satisfactory. In addition, the technical service offered on products that require a little more assistance is very good and fast. If you have any questions they answer immediately. Health related, what are your main concerns? At the national level, we are all concerned about ASF (African swine fever). At the moment, in Spain, we have not had any cases, and that it continues like this and, in the particular field we work in so that all the farms we have stay free of PRRS, which is one of the main concerns for production purposes. Right now, we are also concerned about the reduction of zinc oxide, to see how the transitions are going to develop, the

percentages of casualties … However, in the end, if we have learnt something in the pig sector, it is that when something goes wrong we also know how to recover. In the face of health threats, what biosecurity measures do you have on the farm? Beyond the measures known to all, which I would say that most of the farms comply with, we try to make sure that no one enters the farms if it is not necessary, and, in case they have to enter, try to make it on Monday and ask for a minimum period of 48 hours without having been in another farm. Then, we do not have any other farm within a radius of a kilometre and a half around our farms, we have double perimeter fencing. Both in quarantine and on the breeding farm there is a double disinfection arch, and the external breeders that come to us spend four weeks at least in quarantine, etc. In the end, it is a question of trying, as far as possible, that the animals on the farm are protected from any external conditions. So far, in the eleven years that we have been working with the breeders, we have never had a health problem. Let’s hope it stays that way. What future challenges do you face? At the moment, in the current situation, we do not foresee any new investment in growth, so we will work to make sure that everything continues as before, stable; although the future will tell.

FUTURENEWS HOW MUCH IS A CUBIC METER OF SLURRY WORTH? We must inform farmers of the benefits of using slurry, and when and how to apply it properly to maximize crop productivity.

Óscar Toledano. Sales Manager & BI Rotecna.

For the vast majority of pig farmers, the management of slurry is an expense, which is paradoxical, since slurry is an excellent organic fertiliser. In fact, the nutrients of 1 m3 of slurry have a value of about 15 to 20 euros, well above their cost of useage, so they should generate income.

So, what makes it difficult for us to monetise this? On the one hand, being made of approximately 95% water, the transport cost per fertiliser unit is 95 times higher than that of a commercial fertiliser, but that is compensated by being produced with crops. On the other hand, the specialisation of the primary sector has led to a disengagement between ranchers and farmers, so that farmers who do not produce slurry do not know its exact composition. In addition, and despite being an organic fertiliser, most of the nutrients it contains are mineralised and dissolved in water. This makes it more appropriate for cover fertilization, when 14

crops are in maximum growth and demand more nutrients, since, if it is applied in bottommost excess before planting, by the time crops need them, soluble nutrients have already leeched from the soil, so it can contaminate aquifers. Finally, we insist on talking about slurry as a problem, so we reduce the perception of farmers’ perceived value, which does not answer to a decrease in the value of slurry as fertiliser or an excess of supply, since there are enough crops to apply all the produced slurry in an adequate and sustainable way.

So, what should we do to monetise this? First, make efficient use of water to maximise the concentration of nutrients per unit of slurry and reduce its management costs. It is vital to

check pacifiers and promote the use of drinking troughs with water level valves, which reduce seeming consumption by up to 50%.

be applied to the closest lands, reducing costs, especially if it is done by fertigation.

Next, reduce emissions as much as possible, both in warehouses and during storage and application to on the one hand, not harm the environment and, on the other, to maximise the nutrients contained in the slurry once it comes in contact with the earth.

The remaining solid portion contains a high concentration of nutrients and organic matter, making it a high-value product easy to transport, especially if composted and is an excellent background fertiliser that significantly improves soil characteristics by contributing a greater contribution of organic matter.

Subsequently, separate the liquid from the solid. This allows a reduction in the bulk of the liquid to be managed, which at the same time favours the homogenization of the resulting liquid portion, which will contain a greater proportion of nutrients quickly absorbed by crops. Thus, a smaller amount of land will be necessary for its management as a cover fertiliser, so that it can

On the other hand, you must have an adequate storage capability for both phases, since the application is seasonal and depends on the area and the needs of the crops. During storage, it is advisable to compost the solid phase, which will reduce its volume, concentrating nutrients, stabilising them, increasing their value and reducing the cost of transport and application. 15

FUTURENEWS

The sector works to reduce the volume of manure. Photo: Rotecna.

As for the application, it must be characterised to know the amount of each nutrient in its composition, to be able to dose exactly the amount of nutrients that the crop needs. Currently, there are very economical and quite accurate systems that allow knowing the concentration of nutrients of the liquid phase by conductimetry each time they are applied. In addition, we must apply it at the right time and with the right system: the bottom solid before planting, the liquid in coverage. It should be kept in mind that, to apply fertilisers under covering, the ideal is to fertilise and, if there is no irrigation, use systems that allow entering the fields when the crops are growing. We must also inform farmers of the benefits of using slurry, and how to apply it properly to maximise crop productivity and avoid environmental problems. Finally, we must bear in mind that the European Commission is promoting a measures package 16

under the title of “The Green European Pact”, to promote a more efficient use of resources, with the aim of becoming the first neutral continent in emissions by the year 2050. Within these measures, it is envisaged to reduce the use of fertilisers of extractive and synthetic origin by 20 % and to stimulate the sustainable development of organic products’ supply by 2030, from 8 % of the total amount of crops under current organic farming to 25 %, which may be modulated through the CAP. This will encourage the demand for organic fertilisers, so the value of each unit of organic compost will be higher than that of synthetic or extractive fertilisers, especially those that can be used for crops of organic products, as is the case of fertilisers from the valorization of solid fractions of slurry. In addition, the current situation suggests that commercial fertilisers will continue to steadily increase in price in the coming years. If we use the right management model, we can reduce the implementation cost and increase the value delivered to farmers, even above that provided by the fertilisers they currently use, so if we do it correctly, there is no reason why we cannot charge them for the fertiliser we supply them. It is vital for the sector that we move in this direction, both to increase our environmental and economic sustainability, and to ensure our survival.

PIGPRODUCTIONIN VIETNAM, THE SECOND-LARGEST PIG PRODUCER IN ASIA

The country is the seventhlargest producer globally and the largest consumer of pork in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam has one of the most important pork markets in the world, something that is not surprising if we consider that the country is part of the group of the largest producers and consumers of pork in the world. Specifically, it is the second-largest pork producer in Asia, only behind China, and the seventh worldwide. In turn, it is the largest per capita consumer of pork in Southeast Asia and the sixth in the world. However, in recent years it has had to face adverse situations such as the arrival of ASF or the Covid-19 pandemic.

Impact of ASF If years ago pork consumption was supplied more than 95% by domestic production, the arrival of African swine fever 18

(ASF) in 2019 changed this scenario. ASF led to a cleanup of the Vietnamese pig herd, which was reduced to 85% (in 2020 about 90,000 pigs were slaughtered). This situation resulted in a reduction in production and the consequent price crisis, finally impacting domestic consumption and leading the country to increase its pork imports. Thus, in 2020 Vietnam imported more than 220,000 tons of pork, a figure well above the 30,000 tons per year that were imported, at most, years ago. However, the latest information from the Vietnamese government indicates that the situation has already normalised, both in production and prices.

On the other hand, the ASF crisis has allowed the Vietnamese pig sector to invest large amounts in improving the quality, size, technology, integration, and biosecurity in pig farms, favouring a significant qualitative and quantitative improvement of the country’s productive structure. Thanks to these improvements, it seems that Vietnam will not be one of the world’s largest importers of pork, despite the increase in consumption, instead, it will need to increase its demand for pork from abroad.

Consumption Pork is the most important source of protein for the Vietnamese population and the main ingredient of

Pork consumption in Vietnam has seen significant growth over the past ten years.

many dishes in its gastronomy. Possibly, for these reasons, Vietnam has positioned itself as the largest consumer of pork per capita in Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese consumer virtually only consumes fresh pork, and the consumption of processed meat is very limited and only accessible in restaurants or gourmet establishments. In this sense, 59% of pork consumption in Vietnam corresponds to the volume of purchase of this food for the home, while the remaining 41% corresponds to consumption outside households. Pork consumption in Vietnam has seen significant growth over the past ten years, with annual increases of between 1 and 2%, reaching around 28.5 kilos per capita in 2019. However, in 2020, as a result of the arrival of ASF in the country and the impact of the Covid19 pandemic, per capita consumption fell to 27.8 kilos. Despite this slight decline, forecasts indicate that consumption will once again regain its growth trajectory.

Meat market In 2020 Spain was Vietnam’s eighth pork supplier, behind Russia, Brazil, Poland, Canada, Germany, and the USA. Spanish exports in that year accounted for 6.8% of all Vietnamese imports of pork and pork products, reaching 15,190 tons, worth more than 20 million euros.

A free trade agreement has recently been signed between Vietnam and the EU to release most tariffs over ten years and facilitate foreign investment in the country. This agreement will boost trade between Vietnam and the EU.

Future and opportunities Aspects such as health, origin, food safety and responsible use of antibiotics are becoming very important within the Vietnamese pig sector and among consumers. It is for this reason that the Vietnamese authorities have initiated the implementation of policies and regulations aimed at reducing the pollution generated by the country’s many farms. Domestic demand for pork in Vietnam is expected to grow at a faster rate than domestic production in the coming years. According to World Bank forecasts, meat consumption will increase at a rate of 7.8% while in the case of processed products, the growth will be 10%. Thus, the rapid and growing urbanization of the Vietnamese population, and consequent abandonment of rural populations, make it possible to think of significant opportunities in the medium or long term for quality processed products and high levels of biosecurity, aspects of great importance among Vietnamese consumers. 19
