201112 ANNUAL REPORT

FROM OUR DIRECTOR

It is with great pleasure that I present Rotman Commerce’s 2011-2012 Annual Report: Thinking Globally. Our focus this year has been to expand the reach of our program in terms of recruitment and admissions, curriculum, extra- and co-curricular programming, student leadership opportunities, alumni engagement, and corporate relations. We are a community of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and corporate partners with ties to countries around the world; our diversity strengthens us in an economy that increasingly requires a keen understanding of the international nature of modern commerce. But simply being international is not enough. At Rotman Commerce, we encourage our students and graduates to think internationally as well. From the beginning of our recruitment cycle, we actively seek out talented students from around the world, and international and domestic students alike benefit from the learning opportunities available with such diverse classmates. In the classroom, our new concentration in International Business helps those studying in our Management Specialist program to gain an in-depth understanding of the international context of business. In addition, we are continually expanding our international exchange and summer abroad programs – this year saw the introduction of a new Rotman Commerce course offered in the UAE – to give Rotman Commerce students the opportunity to pursue their studies while experiencing life in a different culture. Outside the classroom, we actively look for international competitions and conferences and other learning opportunities that are suitable for our students – and then we help ensure that they have the financial backing to attend. This year, over 70 of our students participated in international co-curricular opportunities in countries as varied as Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and China, and 10 of our top students travelled to New York with Rotman Commerce faculty and staff to meet with alumni and corporate partners at major financial institutions there. Of course, thinking globally also means thinking about our program as a whole – how we work together as a community. I am happy to say that I think we have done this exceedingly well. Hundreds of volunteers from our alumni and corporate partner communities came to campus to contribute to the vitality of the Rotman Commerce student experience this year and worked with us to create a vibrant and productive learning community. This report details our efforts to think globally in all of these respects. I hope you will take as much pride in our accomplishments as I do. Sincerely,

Professor Kenneth S. Corts Director, Rotman Commerce

OUR PROgRaM Our faculty are a major strength of our program: many teach either in the Rotman school of Management or in UofT’s famed Department of Economics, or are industry professionals eager to share their knowledge with Rotman Commerce students. J.C. Bourque, an industry professional, brought his expertise to the classroom to teach Globalization and Capital Markets: Political Economy and Investment Strategy

With faculty from the internationally renowned Rotman school of Management and UofT’s top-ranked economics department, the Rotman Commerce program offers our students one of the finest undergraduate business educations available worldwide. We ensure that our students develop advanced management skills and acquire a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences so that our graduates will have the advantage of broad interdisciplinary knowledge – knowledge that will help them become the creative innovators of tomorrow’s business world. Our three-stream curriculum, in which students specialize in accounting, finance and economics, or management, is recognized by professional associations such as the Certified general accountants association of Canada, the Institute of Chartered accountants of Ontario, and the CFa Institute. and we continue to develop new study programs that will enable our students to make the most out of their learning when it comes time to pursue their careers and further education. This year, International Business joins leadership in Organizations, Marketing, and strategy as an optional area of concentration available to students in our management specialist. Rotman Commerce continues to attract the very finest students from Canada and around the world. Our student population boasts representatives from more than 35 countries – testament to the strong reputation that our program enjoys globally.

Students in Michael Khan’s International Management and Managerial Accounting class take in a desert tour in the United Arab Emirates.

Bringing the Rotman Commerce program to the world – and the world to our program – means reaching out to colleagues and students across the globe. While our recruitment and alumni communications are always international in nature, this year we made special efforts to cultivate relationships in some of the key countries from which our students come. In January, Professor Kenneth Corts, the Program’s director, travelled to asia to meet with representatives from business programs at a number of universities in China and Japan, where he facilitated arrangements that will enable our students to more easily study at those schools as part of our exchange program. On the Recruitment and admissions side, we focused on two regions from which we have started to see more students applying to our program. In early 2012, we hosted information sessions in the United arab Emirates, where we made personal contact with students in Dubai and abu Dhabi. In april, Rotman Commerce travelled to India, where Deanne saunders, Director of academic services, visited prospective students from Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai. Both of these trips provided high-school students in those countries with valuable opportunities to meet our representatives face-to-face. We are looking forward to continuing with our recruitment efforts in these countries, and to welcoming more talented students from those areas to Rotman Commerce in the near future.

as part of our commitment to ensuring that our students have ample opportunity to gain international experience during their studies, Rotman Commerce and the University of Toronto have several partnership agreements with universities around the world. To date, our program has official ties to 25 universities; these relationships enable our students to study abroad for one or two semesters while gaining credit towards their degrees, and paying UofT tuition. This year, we were pleased to add the Copenhagen Business school in Denmark, and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, to our list of recognized Rotman Commerce partner schools. Rather than committing to a full semester or year of exchange, many of our students choose instead to take advantage of our summer abroad courses. In summer 2012, we offered a new course at the american University of sharjah: International Management and Managerial Accounting. Eighteen students participated in this course, taught by Rotman Commerce and Rotman school of Management lecturer, Michael Khan. International management courses for Rotman Commerce students were also taught by Rotman faculty in hong Kong at the University of hong Kong, while an international marketing course, focusing on the wine and automotive industries, was offered at the University of siena in Italy.

sTUDEnT lIFE student life at Rotman Commerce is a key part of how our students learn. While making friends and attending social functions are important to all students regardless of their program, Rotman Commerce student life also encompasses a wealth of unique hands-on learning opportunities. From attending international conferences and competitions, to participating in professional development programming, to organizing and attending industryspecific symposia, our students have numerous opportunities to build both career skills and social connections in our ever-active student community. Rotman Commerce has ten program-supported student organizations: the Rotman Commerce students’ association (RCsa), Rotman Commerce accounting society (RCas), Rotman Commerce Beyond Business (RCBB), Rotman Commerce Consulting association (RCCa), Rotman Commerce Finance association (RCFa), Rotman Commerce law association (RCla), Rotman Commerce Marketing association (RCMa), Rotman Commerce Pride alliance (RCPa), Rotman Commerce Toastmasters (RCT), and Rotman Commerce Women in Business (RCWIB). last year, 118 of our students served in leadership positions in these groups, which organized 75 events. Many of these events were largescale conferences and symposia, where keynote speakers and presenters included such accomplished professionals as CIBC senior Executive vice President, victor Dodig (BCom ’88); Capco partner, John armstrong (BCom ’82); Rotman school of Management Dean, Roger Martin; and venture capitalist and Dragons’ Den personality, arlene Dickinson. new student group events this year included RCBB’s Conference on Corporate social Responsibility and the RCFa’s Rotman Commerce Finance Conference, two successful initiatives that will continue in 2012-2013. Venture capitalist Arlene Dickinson is interviewed by Rachel Teoh (BCom ’13) at the 2012 Rotman Commerce Women in Business 2012 Leadership Symposium.

ince 2010, Rotman Commerce has been providing seed money through our good Ideas Fund to help support our students’ activities in projects that will have a positive impact in the community. This year, fourth-year accounting specialist avish sood traveled to Cape Town, south africa, to help under-privileged children gain personal development through sport.

“Cape Town is easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world with the gorgeous backdrop of Table Mountain and the vast array of wildlife that is abundant in the Cape Floral region. Upon entering the city, I was welcomed by my volunteer coordinators who drove me to my volunteer house for the next month – a building that housed twenty girls, six guys, and had only one bathroom. I wondered what I had gotten myself into, but as soon as I arrived at the primary school I would be working at, my outlook on things changed. On a typical day at the school, I coordinated physical education classes for the students during the morning, helped with teaching in the afternoon, and took several of the students to the beach for surf lessons. These children, although incredibly mischievous, appreciated every little thing you did with them. To be honest, I went there expecting to change some of these kids’ mindsets; instead, they changed mine. I learned that no matter what life throws at you, there will always be reasons to have a positive outlook. after nearly a month of volunteer work with the primary school, I regrettably had to say goodbye to the city of Cape Town. The children definitely made a mark on me, as did the country itself, with its warm hospitality. I appreciate Rotman Commerce giving me the opportunity to travel to this wonderful place and helping me learn important life lessons – for myself and for the children I worked with.”

As part of the Finance Street Smarts program, participants toured CIBC’s Bay Street Trading Floors.

Every year, we develop new and innovative ways to help our students succeed in their careers and communities while building on the skills they acquire throughout their studies at Rotman Commerce. This year, our projects included programs for our finance specialists, a new management consulting alumni collaboration, and a professional experience program designed especially for our international students. Our FinancenyC, Finance street smarts, and simplify the street initiatives offered upper-year finance and economics students valuable opportunities to experience the workings of the finance industry first-hand, and to network with professionals from some of the most prestigious firms worldwide. FinancenyC took ten of our most accomplished third- and fourth-year finance students along with faculty advisor Maureen stapleton to Wall street, where they met with representatives from Bank of america Merrill lynch, Barclays, TD securities, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, RBC, UBs, société génerale, nomura, and BMO Capital Markets. similarly, the Finance street smarts and simplify the street programs offered our fourth- and third-year participants the chance to meet and learn from working finance professionals, while gaining insight on how best to prepare themselves for a career in the industry. as part of these programs, students were given tours of CIBC’s Bay street Trading Floors, and invited to be part of an alumni networking reception. Our Management Consulting alumni Program (MCaP) helped students gain insider understanding of management consulting. By collaborating with alumni mentors at a number of Toronto-area consulting firms, MCaP offered presentations and workshops that prepared students for careers in the competitive and vibrant management consulting sector. In addition, MCaP gave students ongoing opportunities to practice case skills, access one-onone coaching, and take advantage of specialized consulting resources.

Students in Ibrahim Ibrahim’s MARS Canada-supported workshop learned how to develop and make use of their own personal brand.

Our students and alumni benefit in many ways from the strong relationships that we enjoy with our corporate partners. Recruiters and talent managers from companies and organizations across Canada and internationally work with our Career Centre throughout the year to make sure that our students are aware of the many different professional opportunities that are open to them as members of the Rotman Commerce community. Increasingly, we have collaborated with our corporate partners to develop programs that help students learn important skills that will help them throughout their careers – skills like personal branding, preparing for interviews, writing professional resumes and cover letters, giving presentations, and preparing for professional examinations. These programs introduce company representatives to promising and capable students, while allowing those students to gain a unique understanding of the job market and establish personal connections with professionals working in their areas of interest.

Corporate Partner Profile: MARS Canada, Inc. Ibrahim Ibrahim, Talent Manager at MARS Canada, is a professionally trained executive coach. He is also a specialist in corporate leadership development and employee engagement and well-being. At a meeting with Career Centre Relationship Manager, Robert Ste-Croix, Ibrahim suggested holding a workshop to help students develop their personal brand. With his experience in leadership development, Ibrahim knew that the personal story is a powerful way for students to “market themselves to prospective employers, as well as to gain better insight into their own motivations, strengths, and challenges. In March, Ibrahim hosted a two-day workshop for a small group of second- and third-year Rotman Commerce students in which he introduced them to the concept of leveraging their personal brand. The program helped students to raise their awareness of their personal brand and its impact on others, allowed them to practise giving voice to that brand, assisted them in developing an action plan to strengthen their brand, and coached them on using their existing skill sets and experiences to help sell themselves in job interviews and networking opportunities. In addition, Ibrahim met individually with each student who completed the workshop in an hour-long, one-on-one coaching session, and invited them to meet with him at the MARS offices, where they could tour the facilities. Our Career Centre is always eager to work with corporate partners to develop unique learning opportunities for our students, such as the one developed by Ibrahim and MARS Canada. Our strong ties to corporate recruiters and talent managers allow us to offer enhanced career services, and we are grateful to the many excellent companies we work with who help us to continually improve. Our corporate partners enrich the learning environment at Rotman Commerce immensely through their ongoing presence on campus, their efforts in recruiting and mentoring our students, their willingness to participate in and host student and alumni events, and their overall support of our program, our students, and our graduates.

With over 11,000 graduates, Rotman Commerce’s extensive alumni network spans the globe. We are fortunate that many of these alumni choose to volunteer their time and expertise with our students every year as mentors, volunteers, and guest speakers. Our alumni Mentorship Program – a consistently popular program – pairs third- and fourth-year students with alumni mentors who advise mentees in planning their career paths and networking with other professionals. In 2011-2012, 98 mentor-mentee pairs participated in the program, making it our largest group to date. alumni also return to campus as judges in case competitions, as presenters in student conferences, and as guest speakers in a number of events. This year, alumni participated in nearly all of the student-run conferences and competitions, generously giving their time to inspire, educate, and support our students in all realms of business. students also learned from the experiences of our graduates through our Inside the alumni network speaker series, in which five accomplished alumni from a variety of different industries – David looi (BCom ’04), Mansoor Mahmood (BCom ’08), John McManus (BCom ’82), David lint (BCom ’64), and James Robinson (BCom ’80) – participated in intimate small-group discussions with current students. a highlight of our year is always the leadership in Business symposium, which features a keynote speech by a prominent graduate. This year’s speaker, entrepreneur Brian luborsky (BCom ’80), Chairman and CEO of Premier salons International, graciously shared his experiences with an attentive crowd of students and faculty at Innis Town hall, where he was interviewed by Rotman Commerce Director, Kenneth Corts.

The commitment of our alumni isn’t limited to helping out current students, however. Toronto-area graduates can count on the enthusiastic efforts of our alumni steering Committee, a group of dedicated volunteers who provide support and feedback to our alumni Relations Office and contribute to the strategic direction of the alumni network. One of the highlights of our alumni activities from last year was attending a Toronto argos game, which included a pre-game, field-level tour with Rotman Commerce alum and argonauts CEO Bob nicholson (BCom ’78). The experience of our community as a whole – both current and former students – is greatly enhanced by the active contributions of our alumni network. It is a testament to the strong sense of leadership and community service of our graduates that every year literally hundreds of alumni offer their support to make Rotman Commerce the excellent program it is.
