MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF CAREER SERVICES

A

t Rotman Commerce, we work closely with our students to develop their career skills, ensuring that they are job-ready and prepared to excel in their chosen careers. Our commitment at Rotman Commerce Career Services is to engage employers from diverse industries to match our exceptional student talent with their recruiting and employment needs.

Through our comprehensive career development offerings, which include online modules, career labs, technical training, and collaborations with the new Rotman Commerce Centre for Professional Skills, we support the development of core skills that will better equip our students for the future of work. Understanding that success can often hinge on “making a good fit, our team of career educators and relationship managers are dedicated to aligning student strengths with industry demands, and to educating students on a breadth of career possibilities, including those in non-conventional sectors or areas. Recently, we have been focusing on increasing opportunities for our students to gain first-hand exposure to different career paths and industries through our industry treks. Last year, we expanded on our flagship New York City Finance Trek to offer local Toronto-based career treks in both finance and the CPG and retail industries. We are thrilled to announce that in the upcoming 2019/20 academic year, we will be launching a Silicon Valley Trek that will enable students to connect with recruiters and alumni in the tech and start-up space in the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley Areas. To allow for easier, on-demand access to our career services, we have been focusing on building online career development modules. These modules will help students access the tools they need to prepare for their careers at their convenience, with more traditional in-person assistance available to them when necessary. Both our career educators and our relationship managers are professionally trained and certified career coaches, which allow us to provide expert coaching assistance to our students as they navigate their personal career paths. We are excited to share the Rotman Commerce 2018/19 Employment Report with you, and look forward to new and continued partnerships that will serve the needs of both our valued employers and corporate partners, and our extraordinarily talented student body. Thank you for making Rotman Commerce part of your ongoing talent strategy. Sincerely, Lyla Korhani Director, Career Services Rotman Commerce

“When I was deciding what university to go to, I chose U of T because the campus is so integrated with the city. Being in downtown Toronto, I knew that I would have access to so many different resources and opportunities that many other campuses can’t offer. Without a doubt, I can confidently say that I have no regrets in coming to Rotman Commerce.”

“What struck me the most about my journey with Rotman Commerce was the support I received from the upperyear students. I attended student club events for Y1 students and met with upper year students who were really willing to help me. They offered to chat one-on-one over coffee chats, in the halls, at events, and I felt such a strong sense of community spirit, which really helped me build my confidence, especially around developing my resumé, cover letter, and networking skills.”

“After speaking with a coach before my PwC interview, I realized I hadn’t done enough research on the firm, so I created a folder of information and learned the importance of connecting with Rotman Commerce Career Services and starting to research the employers you want to target. Career Services can also help navigate how to research unique employers for each interview. They will also teach you how to take active steps to network and how to brand yourself the earlier you start the more successful you’ll be.”

“I met with Career Services in my first year and they helped guide me through the recruitment process. They assisted with developing a plan and time line on how to achieve my goals. One particular event I attended was the NYC Finance Trek, which was an amazing experience. Through this trip I was able to ultimately secure a job for summer 2020 at Evercore in New York City.”

BCom ’04 Strategic Partnerships, Google Toronto, ON

Choosing Rotman Commerce helped set the foundation for Justin Pang’s career. He credits his Rotman Commerce BCom for ensuring that he built a strong analytical background that he continues to leverage in his daily work. An engaged alumnus, mentor and professional, Justin offers the following career advice:

“View your career journey as a series of experiments. I started my career as a CPA/CA at a Big Four firm, then moved to Strategy Consulting, then to the non-profit world, and, most recently, have been in the technology industry. I’ve viewed my jobs as a way to learn more about what type of work I found fulfilling and rewarding. I also encourage you to follow your curiosity. If you don’t know what you want to do when you “grow up” use the early years in your career to figure out what work inspires and interests you. Lastly, don’t be afraid to take responsible risks. When I was 25 I took a leap of faith and quit my job and moved to work for free at the Clinton Foundation with no idea what that would lead to after. I’m so grateful I was in a position to make that move and listened to my intuition as it allowed me to learn more about what was important to me and set the stage for the rest of my life and career.”
