It’s summer and for many of us the holiday season when we gear up to get out and about. Over recent years our travel and tourism sectors took a mighty knock due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the hospitality sector has shown incredible resilience. At Rove SA, we promote travelling locally – South Africa has a plethora of sites and activities to offer with top-notch experiences on our doorstep. South Africa offers wonderful contrasts; we have the rugged Karoo, lush Afrotane forests, stunning coastline beaches, extreme sports for adrenaline enthusiasts, world-class spas and wine farms, fine dining, some of the best game viewing safaris in the world, and best of all, we have amazing people. With all that and more on offer locally, we can experience the best vacation right here in SA.

Our cover feature (page 10) in this edition highlights the above. The Western Cape is a destination that offers an international experience – want to head to Greece, try out our West Coast instead; looking to experience vineyards in Tuscany, check out the Cape Winelands instead; looking for a cosmopolitan adventure, Cape Town delivers; searching for off-the-beaten track, the Karoo has you covered; and if you are in search of delectable dishes – there are loads of restaurants with countless types of cuisine. While the Western Cape remains a popular travel destination for local and international travellers alike, every province in SA has something fantastic to offer, be it history, majestic landscapes, culture or adventure. It’s going to be a scorcher of summer with lots on offer, but we can cool-off with some beach trips (Beaching around, page 98) and water sports (Water wonderland, page 26) around SA. For something a bit different, check out Graaff Reinet (page 22), and for the bushveld experience, look no further than Limpopo (page 92).

TRAVEL TIPS

Travel Tips

Hydrate Staying hydrated is important throughout the year, but is more critical during the hot temperatures as fluids are lost through perspiration. Always keep water with you and drink it often – you can also infuse your water with fruit, which is a perfect summer drink. Consuming foods with high water content such as watermelon and cucumber can also help to keep you hydrated.

Travelling with kids

• • • •

Make it an adventure with kid-friendly pit stops. Take lots of snacks. Give the kids a task such as taking photographs. Take some games along to keep them entertained.

mySOS SA

The mySOS SA mobile app provides users access to the closest, most appropriate emergency numbers for ambulances, fire and police services, national sea rescue, stroke and poison centres and roadside assistance. The one-button emergency activation also automatically notifies your contacts about the incident and your current GPS location.

Limit sun exposure The sun is the most damaging between 10am and 4pm. If you are out and about during this time, wear sunscreen, cover-up, and try to stay in shaded areas and drink lots of water. Wear a wide brimmed hat as opposed to a cap which leaves your neck exposed.

Don't carry large amounts of money – rather use your bank cards. Limit the amount of valuables you have on you. Keep your wallet in your front pocket and not the back pocket. Avoid hiking, cycling or walking by yourself. Hold your child’s hand and always accompany them to the public bathroom. It is advisable for children to have some sort of identification tag on them with parents' details in case they get lost.

If you are caught in a rip current • • • • •

Don’t panic. Don’t try to swim straight back to the shore against the current as this will exhaust you. Try to tread water or turn on your back and float (rip tides get weaker as they go further out). Raise one arm in the air and wave for help to alert people on the beach that you are in trouble. Swim parallel to the beach, out of the current, and then use waves to help you get back to the beach.

COVER FEATURE

Get that far away feeling in Cape Town and the Western Cape Summer is here and for many it's the tonic before another year. Tuscany, Sweden, the French Riviera, Greece and Nevada sound lovely, but why not visit a place that can bring you all they have to offer and more?

It’s time to plan a getaway that lets you explore a worldin-one, a destination that will give you that faraway feeling without having to travel very far at all. Come and find yourself in the six glorious regions of Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Cape Town the jewel in the crown

Often compared to the French Riviera, the Mother City comes complete with a Mediterranean climate, long white beaches, cocktail bars and world-class restaurants. Cape Town ticks all the boxes, but let’s be honest, it’s all the additional offerings that pushes it beyond its French counterpart. A melting pot of cultures, Cape Town is a heady mix of superb lifestyle activities, high adventure and incredible arts and culture. It’s considered the jewel

10 | December 2021

in the crown for a reason, with an abundance on offer for visitors and locals alike.

Cape Overberg, breadbasket of the Western Cape

Transport yourself to a lush green landscape dominated by gentle, undulating hills, with an awe-inspiring backdrop of foreboding mountains. No, this isn’t Sweden – welcome to the Cape Overberg, the breadbasket of the Western Cape with a bounty of wheat and fruit harvests every year. It is also a favourite for weekend warriors looking for outdoor pursuits and wild adventure. This is a place that boasts great diversity with coastal towns such as Hermanus, known as the jewel of the Cape Whale Coast for its abundance of marine wildlife; the beautiful Elgin Valley,

an under-appreciated wine region; and Swellendam, a jaw-droppingly beautiful natural wonderland, combining to create a region unlike any other.

Cape Winelands, the vine story LEFT Hermanus coastline - the jewel of the Cape Whale Coast TOP LEFT Scenic view of Stellenbosch Winelands TOP RIGHT Horse riding in the Karoo

Tuscany is lovely, sure, but why go through all the admin and costs of a summer getaway trip to Italy (in the winter), when you can experience all it has to offer – and more – in the Cape Winelands? The Western Cape is known for its abundance of quality wine and its story is intrinsically tied to the vine. Nowhere is this truer than in the Cape Winelands, a region overflowing with award-winning vintages and home to world-class vineyards. Towns such as Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Wellington and Robertson are now iconic in terms of the wine they produce and together they produce wine that is as diverse as it is

bountiful. Set aside plenty of time if you visit the Cape Winelands, because you will not cover it in a day. And while the wine put the Cape Winelands on the map, it delivers plenty on the food front as well, with world-class restaurants in abundance. Additionally, you can add craft beer and whisky to the menu now, with the region quickly becoming a leader in both, ensuring that it continues to expand on its offerings.

Garden Route and Klein Karoo a stretch of paradise Route 66? We’re sure it’s lovely, but have you tried Route 62? In fact, the Garden Route and Klein Karoo is a road trip must, with thousands of families embarking down this magnificent stretch of paradise every year. Stretching from Witsand to Plettenberg Bay, right around to Oudtshoorn as well as Calitzdorp and Ladismith on the

COVER FEATURE world-renowned Route 62 (voted best road trip in the world by CNN), this is a place where adventure lies around every corner. With everything from majestic mountains – and equally impressive mountain passes – to brilliantly blue coastlines and thick forested areas, the region is a natural wonderland to explore with a hugely diverse number of experiences. Route 62 runs through some fantastic small towns, with a number of options available to you – from olive and fruit farms, lesser-known, but equally impressive wineries, and nature reserves. The Garden Route is also a golfer’s paradise with world class courses on

offer, including Fancourt and Pinnacle Point. For the adventurous, there are few better playgrounds to explore, with a myriad of trails, running through indigenous forests and up epic, jawdropping passes, while for those who prefer the water are sure to be spoilt by what is on offer in Knysna, Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay.

Cape West Coast for bountiful seafood

The Cape West Coast (Weskus) is a place so awe-inspiring, so jawdroppingly beautiful, and so magical, you would need weeks to take it all in. Think Greece, just a lot more impressive. Famous for its beautiful beaches and the quaint, seaside

towns, many of which have become a home-away-from-home for Western Cape locals and are havens for those looking to escape the city. The region is also famous for its bountiful seafood, with snoek, mussels and crayfish in abundance. Understandably, the area has become a mecca for restaurants specialising in seafood dishes, the ingredients of which are usually fresh form the ocean along which they line. But the Cape West Coast is not just about the sea... the aptly named town of Darling is famous for its wildflowers, and its locally produced wines, while the Cederberg Mountains boast

century-old rock art, warm, welcoming locals and some of the best hiking, mountain biking and bouldering in the world.

Cape Karoo for wide open spaces

Known for its wide-open spaces, the Cape Karoo is where you want to go when the pace of city life is something you want to escape. This is where you go to get off the grid. Kind of like Nevada, but without the visas and airport lounges. The Cape Karoo is a place of incredible beauty, wild game, clear skies and magical sunsets. The region has several nature reserves and game farms, boasting an abundance of wildlife. Another animal in abundance in the Karoo is sheep who roam ‘freely’ around the area on large plots of land, sampling a wide range of indigenous, aromatic plants. As a result, the Karoo has become famous for its succulent and tasty lamb dishes. And while we’re talking food, make sure you stop in at Prince Albert, a town with a burgeoning foodie culture and serious artistic flair. Also be sure to visit Matjiesfontein, a tiny 19th Century town, seemingly untouched by time, and once considered the jewel of the Western Cape.

Cradle of Human Culture – discover what it means to be human A journey through the Cradle of Human Culture traces the origins and development of human culture over the past 160 000 years and, in the process, also uncovers what it means to be human.

From engraved ostrich eggshells and bone tools to shell beads and the first evidence of drawing, visitors will discover some of humanity’s earliest use of symbols, art and technological innovation. While the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng holds some of the earliest evidence of the human journey, starting from about 3.5 million years ago, the Cradle of Human Culture holds evidence of how our ancestors started to manifest abstract thought, to use fire to improve their tool-making skills and to systematically exploit marine resources for their nutrition. These sites reveal how we, as Homo sapiens, started to innovate socially, behaviourally and culturally. By following the footsteps of our early predecessors, visitors will discover how we became what we are today. The Cradle of Human Culture includes several archaeological and palaeontological sites in the Western Cape.

Experience the two journeys through the Western Cape The Artist's Journey in the Cape West Coast (Weskus), is where you will discover the West Coast Fossil Park, San Rock art dotted along the Cederberg and unique guided experiences that will leave you feeling inspired. Along the Coastal Journey, you will catch a glimpse of the Cape Winelands, delving into the Cape Overberg and exploring the famous Garden Route and Klein Karoo, discovering coastal caves such as the archaeological site of Pinnacle Point and the underground cave wonder known as the Cango Caves. HIKING SAFETY

Outdoor adventures: The do’s and don’ts during summer By Jody Hanslo, firefighter, medic, mountain guide

Majestic mountains boasting spectacular views of rugged and lush landscapes makes SA a hiking mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and travellers alike. There has been some debate about the safety of this activity, however the reality is that it’s difficult to know what's best. Here are some tips about single day and multi-day hiking that can help keep you safe.

18 | December 2021

www.rovesa.co.za

HIKING SAFETY Know your route

You aren't going to a party where you can easily find a way out if anything goes wrong. Do some research about the route you plan to take. Keep it simple, check if there are water holes or rivers, how much elevation gain, and whether there are technical bits along the way – whatever you can find really.

Don't take just any advice Ask questions on relevant social media platforms and rather deal with the insecurity of being judged for asking than not having any idea. Mountain people are usually friendly and happy to help.

Hydrate yourself

Start hydrating yourself one or two days prior to the hike and take lots of water with you. If it's a long hike in the heat, two litres of water should be enough, unless you know that you need more. Again, this depends on the planned route and potential duration.

Check the weather and be specific about the location Check the hourly forecast and look at details like precipitation, humidity percentage, cloud cover and wind speed. It all counts when in the mountains.

Pack proper sustenance

Chocolate, sweets and energade can only keep you going for so long. A wholewheat peanut-butter sandwich can save your life.

Start as early as possible and check drive time

A setback in start time could potentially contribute to being stuck mid-afternoon in unpleasant scorching heat. A route where there are rockpools along the way or at the turnaround point is good for a bit of a later start. In summer it gets super-hot super early, and some popular routes are completely dry. Not

www.rovesa.co.za

being properly prepared and starting in 20-degree weather at 7am for a long trek is asking for trouble.

Save emergency numbers on your phone

Ensure your phone battery doesn't die. Have a fully charged phone and carry a portable charger.

Leave your route plan with a friend Give a family member or friend info about what you plan to do and when to expect you to be safe off the mountain. They could relay this important info to emergency agencies if needed.

Keep together

When hiking, keep the group together as much as possible. If the trail is simple and easy to follow then you can perhaps let down your guard a bit. It's so easy for someone to take a different path when there is no one around. Don't assume they will choose the same route you did. Additionally, be cognisant of less experienced hikers who might struggle if they are separated from the group.

Be sun smart

Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat could make the world of difference and slow down fatigue or the onset of heat exhaustion.

First aid

Take personal medication (e.g. inhaler/ allergex) and have at least one person in the group take a first aid kit including plasters, a bandage, dressings, medical tape and pain medication. You can add to this as you see fit.

Share the load

Share the load with the group – carrying a weight over time contributes to fatigue. Let the stronger and fitter hikers carry the heavier items. Teamwork makes the dream work. Adventuring in the mountains is incredible, but to ensure that it is a success, planning goes a long way to mitigate the associated risks.

What to wear

This is always weather dependent but packing in a warm top that's easy to carry usually comes in handy when unexpected weather arrives. Good hiking shoes are important and could give you an advantage, but isn't compulsory. Again, this depends on the conditions of the terrain and route.

River rafting Orange River, Northern Cape: A veritable haven for water enthusiasts of all levels. While there are some challenging rapids, there are also long, flat stretches that are suitable for families or beginners. Tugela River, KwaZulu-Natal: Possibly the most famous rivers, the Tugela River delivers on the adventure for thrill seekers with rapids ranging from Grades 1 to 5.

Blyde River, Mpumalanga: Blyde River

offers Grade 3 to 5 rapids. It offers a combination of challenging sections, and more gentle stretches that are suitable for families and beginners.

renowned scuba diving site that boasts a variety of hard and soft corals in addition to tropical and subtropical fish species (including large predators).

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

Hydrofoil boarding Relatively new, a hydrofoil board is a surfboard with a hydrofoil attached to it. Hydrofoils were originally used on ships and sailboats to enhance speed. Now it’s become a hot new trend as people use it for surfing and kiteboarding. Surfing with a hydrofoil allows a surfer to begin riding waves sooner than being on a regular board as once you start moving and stand up on the wave, you are able to pump the board up and down which will start creating your own speed.

Tubing For a more leisure activity, tubbing is an excellent way to enjoy the water, soak up some rays and even enjoy a good read while floating on a calm river or dam. For a more adrenaline packed adventure, the tube can be towed behind a jet-ski or a speed boat – just be sure to hang on!

Advice:

When booking any water sport activity, ensure that you go with an experienced tour company and guide who is knowledgeable about the area and challenges.

Recreational fishing Kosi Bay, KwaZulu-Natal: Kosi Bay is a top spot for all avid fishermen. There are a variety of fishing options

including fishing the Kosi lake system, the estuary at Kosi Mouth and rock and surf angling at Kosi Mouth, Bhanga Nek, Black Rock, Dog Point, Toolbox, Lala Neck and Rocktail Bay. Catches include Grunter, Kingfish, Rock Salmon/ Red Snapper, Yellowfin Bream and Pick-handled Pike. There are certain areas where fishing is not allowed – so be on the lookout to avoid a fine.

Giant’s Cup Wilderness Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal: Known for wild-trout fly fishing, it is the only lake locally with a self-sustaining wild trout population. The accompanying landscape with an abundance of fauna and flora makes for a brilliant day out. Schroda Dam, Limpopo: Schroda Dam is located within the Mapungubwe National Park. As a means to replenish the tiger fish, which used to be abundant in the Limpopo River, the dam was stocked with tiger fish in 2003. Fishing tigers is allowed on a catch and release basis only. Maswiri Dam, Limpopo: Located just outside Musina and part of the Maswiri Safari Nature Reserve, Maswiri Dam is famed for its giant bass and bream populations. The surrounding reserve gives visitors an opportunity to fish and take in the splendour of the natural scenery in addition to game viewing. a healthy selection of rainbow and brown trout.

Orange River, Northern Cape: There are a variety of camping options available where fishermen/women can

stay, enjoy the natural splendour and fish daily for yellowfish, which the Orange River is famed for.

Advice:

Ensure you read up on regulations pertaining to where you can fish and if it is a catch and release site.

ROAD SAFETY

Stay alert & safe It's the time of fun in the sun, so more people are venturing out. With busy roads and destinations to reach, follow these tips to help keep safe. By Adv. Johan Jonck, Arrive Alive

Gear up for your journey •

• •

Obey the rules of the road and always have your driver's licence. Use a GPS navigation or road atlas, and give yourself enough time to reach the destination. Do not get stranded without fuel – plan ahead where you will refuel. Plan rest stops along the way. Ensure that a friend/family member is aware of the route that you are planning to travel. Ideally, update them on your progress and alert them when you have reached your destination safely. Try to avoid driving after dark.

30 | December 2021

Be roadworthy •

Take your vehicle for a full check before embarking on your holiday travels. Check that all lights, indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, exhaust system and tyres are examined for faults. Do not overload your vehicle.

Stay alert • • •

Rest before your journey. Take safety breaks every two hours or 200km. Do not drink and drive. If you intend to consume alcohol, make alternative arrangements so you will not be behind the wheel. Remain alert and avoid driver distractions such as cellular

conversations, texting etc. Always wear your seat belt and ensure all passengers do likewise. Depending on age and weight, babies must be in a car seat, toddlers in a booster seat and older children must wear a seatbelt.

Defensive driving • •

• •

Drive defensively. Avoid all distractions, keep both eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel. Be visible by driving with your lights on. Headlights should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within range of the main beam. Stay within the speed limit.

www.rovesa.co.za

ROAD SAFETY

• •

• •

Be especially alert when approaching traffic lights, intersections and level crossings. Only overtake when it is absolutely safe to do so. Maintain a 3-second following distance – this distance should be increased at night and in foggy/ rainy/wet conditions. Avoid driving in the blind spot of other vehicles. Be courteous towards fellow road users, and resist any urge to retaliate to inconsiderate drivers. Be cautious when driving alone, and avoid stopping in remote areas.

Criminality •

Remain alert in any areas that might present a threat of criminal activity such as hijackings and smash-and-grab. Place your valuables in the boot and don't leave items such as cell phones and wallets in open sight, unattended, or on the seat.

Ensure the safety of all road users •

Try to recognise potentially dangerous drivers and pedestrians alongside the road and keep well clear of them. Try to keep children away from

www.rovesa.co.za

• • • • • •

• •

playing on and near the roads. When walking near traffic, avoid distractions and be visible. Bikers should ride with lights on and wear protective clothing. Bikers should avoid being in a truck’s blind spot or “No-Zone.” Pay attention to the signals and brake lights of other vehicles. Avoid cycling alone as there is increased safety in numbers. Inform friends/family when you will be cycling, the route you are taking and your expected return. Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged in case of an emergency. Cycle in single file and wear a safety helmet.

Emergency stops and accidents •

Safe driving in challenging road conditions • •

Always adjust your driving to the driving conditions and environment. If it is raining, turn your headlights and windscreen wipers on. Try to reduce speed and try not to brake suddenly. If the road is wet or if there is an oil/petrol spill on the road, sudden braking can cause a vehicle to skid out of control. If there is fog, reduce speed and turn headlights on low or use fog lamps. If you cannot see or operate the vehicle safely, please do not drive.

Travelling with small children can be a challenge. It’s advisable to pack a variety of their favourite snacks and toys to keep them occupied.

Try to avoid stopping on the highway. Rather take the next off ramp to stop in a more public area where you can stretch, refresh yourself and/or take a break from driving; and have numbers for roadside assistance and other emergencies close at hand or saved on your cell phone. Keep essential roadside equipment with you. Items include a first aid kit, tow rope, warning triangles, torch and fire extinguisher. In the event of an accident, determine the extent of the damage/injuries and assess if medical attention is required. Take a picture with a camera or mobile phone and file an accident report with the police as you will need a case number for your insurance company to file a claim. Remember to get names, addresses, telephone numbers and ID numbers of everyone involved in the accident.

Step onto the beach from Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay By Di Brown, Roaming Giraffe

Cape Country Routes

Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape is best known as a top surf spot. It is home to the perfect wave, the longest right-hand point break on the planet, and more than that it is the perfect place for a family holiday – there’s so much to do, and so much to see for every age. Supertubes Guest House, a Cape Country Routes member is a luxury guesthouse a few steps from the beach overlooking this legendary surf spot making it a superb base for exploring this coastal town. J-Bay as it is known colloquially, is situated 75 kilometres west of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and 160 kilometres east of Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route.

J-Bay beach life

Dolphin Beach has been awarded Blue Flag status, making it the first choice for swimmers but Magna Tubes and Kabeljous are also safe beaches for frolicking in the surf, fishing or chilling on the sands. Supertubes Beach is great for walking, exploring the rock pools and

marveling at the mad surfing skills of those who are way beyond beginner status. For a great work-out walking on sand – there is about 20 kilometres of continuous beach, starting at the mouth of the Seekoei River and ending at the Gamtoos River Mouth. The walk passes a variety of landscapes

including rock pools, dunes, the Kabeljou River mouth, wetlands, and aloes.

Noorsekloof Nature Reserve

The tranquility of nature is no further than a short walk from the urban landscapes in J-Bay. The Noorsekloof Nature Reserve is a prime example. This 28 hectare reserve is in the heart of suburbia, but within minutes of leaving the pavement behind and navigating the narrow path down into the gorge, the sounds of the manmade world are silenced, and nature takes over. The crackle of leaves underfoot, the rustle of branches as you duck and weave past tangled foliage, thorny saplings, and plump succulents. Following the stream that runs through the reserve our guide calls us to a halt and tells us to sit. Moss covered rocks make for cool seats, and led by our guide, we sit quietly and tune in to our surroundings. The evocative scent of damp earth, the soothing sounds of water over rocks, a flash of colour as a bird flies past us.

www.rovesa.co.za

Over 50 species of bird inhabit this tiny green lung, including the Knysna Woodpecker, Knysna Loerie and the Paradise Flycatcher. This three kilometre walk is an unexpected delight. Ask for a local guide to fully appreciate this tiny reserve that is being maintained by the locals.

Paddle out

The adventurous can get surf lessons and paddle out into the breakers or you can choose a gentler paddle with All Africa Adventures and explore the lagoon by kayak in the Kabeljou Nature Reserve starting at the river mouth. Prolific birdlife includes flamingoes, but keep your eyes peeled. Bushbuck, duiker, caracul, grysbok and mongoose can all be seen here. There are also short walking options around the reserve. In parts the lagoon is shallow so be prepared to jump out of the kayak from time to time and give a push as your feet sink into the squelchy mud. Water shoes are recommended. J-Bay is a celebration of the outdoors, and All Africa Adventure Tours offer pretty much anything you can dream up, including sand boarding on the

dunes, horse rides, surf lessons, SUP, fat bikes and day trips to surrounding nature and adrenalin attractions. (www.allafricaadventures.com)

All things food

Lunch at the artisan family eatery JBay Bru Co, a cool hang out place, ‘home away from home’ gives you an authentic J-Bay experience. It’s laidback, pretty and easy going and caters for the entire family. There’s a play area for the kids, a craft beer garden for the ‘youngsters,’ a formal area with antique furnishings for the oldsters, and water bowls for the four legged family members. (www. jbaybru.co.za) Dinner at the beach side Walskipper is obligatory when in J-Bay. It’s an unpretentious spot where you can sit with your feet in the sand and enjoy real food cooked on open fires and always served with a friendly word and a huge smile. PET TRAVEL

Pet vacation or a staycation? We are in the final quadrant of the year and the festive holidays are now in sight. This begs the question: travel with your beloved pets, have a staycation or travel without them? By Keshvi Nair, NSPCA

It will always be first prize to be in a situation that allows you and your pets to remain together, and, thankfully, in today’s day and age it is possible to travel with your furry companions.

Here are a few tips on going away, staying with your pets or traveling with them for the holidays.

One thing for certain is that there really is no excuse for leaving your pets completely home alone for days on end.

The benefit of staying home with your pets is that your animal will not be at risk of having to adjust to travelling and

The surroundings are familiar for the animal so they can find safe hiding places or be close to you when they are scared, and, if there is an emergency you know where your local veterinarian is.

It could be a lot of fun to be able to share special moments and create memories with your furry companion over the holidays.

Travelling with your pets

If you are unable to stay home with your pets for the holidays, perhaps you should consider taking them on holiday with you. It could be a lot of fun to be able to share special moments and create memories with your furry companion over the holidays. It also gives you the benefit of enjoying a holiday away from home without having to stress about leaving your companion behind. If you are dropping your pet off at said person’s house for pet sitting, packing familiar items such as blankets and toys may provide comfort for your pet in the new and temporary setting. Make sure if there are other animals at the property, that they are compatible with your pet. Dogs and cats are not the only pets that people have. A few tips to consider: •

Going away without your pets

If you are in the absolute worst possible scenario, where you cannot stay home and you cannot take your companions with you for whatever reason, then we have these tips.

Never leave your pet home alone for extended periods of time. There should always be someone to check daily that your animal is safe and that the animal has access to clean water, food and shelter. Dangerous areas, such as the pool, should be cordoned off. It is better to leave your pet at home and have someone that you know and trust personally to stay in and watch over your companion. It is beneficial if the pet is familiar with this person (i.e. someone who visits your

to care for your pets has the necessary knowledge to look after that specific animal. If you cannot find a trustworthy person to pet sit your companions, you may want to consider boarding. If you board the animal, ensure that you have assessed the boarding facility well before your holiday time. Make sure the facility is in line with animal welfare standards and get a good sense of whether the staff there will truly take care of your pet in your absence. Your pets’ vaccines should be up to date before you place them into boarding as well.

Look for accommodation that allows pets to stay on the premises with you. Enquire if there are other pets on the property. Some animals are not always compatible with others. Ensure these animals will be kept separately from yours or that all the animals are compatible with each other. Pack a few familiar items to help your pet adjust to the holiday house. These could include toys or blankets. Go for a test drive with your pet to determine how your pet will react to being in the car for extended periods of time. View your route beforehand and try to locate pit stops to provide potty breaks for your companion, or just to stretch a little. Ensure all medication and food is packed well before hand to ensure nothing is left behind accidentally. Ensure that your pet is microchipped and has a collar or some form of identification with your details on it. This is to ensure that if there are any mishaps and your companion jets off into unknown areas, someone will be able to contact you. It would be wise to go to the vet before travelling, especially for those who don’t do well in cars or who fright easily. A vet should be able to give you the green light for travel, and add any additional medication to make the trip easier if necessary.

Barefoot luxury at The Bungalow, Plett By Nadine Carroll, Living It Up CT

The summer season is here, and I can’t think of anything better than a beach holiday! Just imagine… a week or two of lazy beach days, soaking up the sun, cool ocean dips, and sand between your toes, sipping cocktails and living that chilled beach life. The Bungalow offers seven room options, either sea- or cliff-facing, all luxuriously appointed in calming hues of greys, greens and blues with bespoke amenities. SAFETY FIRST

How to keep your home secure

while travelling Security is an essential amenity for any home. Colin Harding, padlock specialist at IB McIntyre & Co and Master Lock SA, talks to Rove SA about the best choices to make for homeowners wanting peace of mind during holidays.

Modern home security systems have become more affordable, easier to install, and accessible from the tips of homeowners' fingers, no matter their location. In South Africa, we are fortunate to have a wide array of security options, including high-tech alarm systems, on-call security, CCTV cameras, mobile applications, to the traditional padlock. When it comes to matching your security needs with your budget, it can be helpful to refine the pros of the different alternatives. “When setting up a security system, it is vital to consider your location, how close you are to a service centre, and any extra costs you are willing to commit

to keeping such systems online,” says Colin Harding. “When the latest technology and expensive equipment are rendered useless due to load-shedding, weather impediments, and other obstacles, your best bet is to fall back onto the traditional padlock to help keep the burglar out and stall those determined to make an entry.”

Top tips for securing your home •

Keep your property neat and tidy. If it's security beams you are looking to incorporate, bushy parameters can deter its effectiveness. Being transparent about your security

measurements sends a clear message that you are prepared. Invest in a quality padlock. Consider location, the value of the items you want to secure, and the barricade (for example, a door) to void access. The higher the value of the items you want to protect, the higher your lock's SANS rating should be, and clearly displayed on the packaging. Don’t be wary to install a combination wall lockbox. Guaranteed it is installed by a professional, a wall lockbox can come in handy when you don't want any dangling keys on you or manage an Airbnb.

WIN!!! Two lucky readers stand a chance to win an ultimate Master Lock security kit valued at R3 500! Enter by sending a WhatsApp to 076 968 8929 with your full name and include the line, Master Lock Giveaway. Competition ends 28 February 2022. Entrants must reside in South Africa and provide a daytime delivery address.

Explore Bergriver South Africans are embracing travel and getting out and about to satisfy their wanderlust. Covid-19 has changed the way people travel with many looking for local adventures in off-the-beaten-track destinations – and the Bergrivier region certainly delivers… Bergriver Tourism The Bergrivier region is a beautiful area known for its open spaces and dramatic landscapes, which is peppered with small towns that offer a vast array of activities and adventure options. For 4x4 enthusiasts the Jakkalskloof 4x4 route in Redelinghuys makes for an adventurous outing. On the last Saturday of every month is the Piket Bo-Berg Farmers Market, which takes place on the Kruistementvlei Farm in the mountains above Piketberg from 9am to 12 noon. This event attracts foodies who drive through to purchase the handcrafted items and farm fresh produce.

Bird watchers can also expect to find an abundance of feathered friends at Pampoenfontein, Beaverlac (another popular camping site) and in the Groot Winterhoek. Those keen to throw in a line can opt for some fishing at the local municipal dam in Porterville as well as the privately owned dam on the Houdconstant Farm. Saturday visitors can also pop in at the Houdconstant Country Market which offers delicious food and entertainment for kids such as pony rides.

It offers fantastic paragliding and hanggliding opportunities in addition to a variety of hiking trails to fascinating destinations like De Hel (the hell) and De Tronk (the jail) in the Groot Winterhoek, where impressive rock formations can be found. There is also an uphill waterfall trail at Waterval (a popular camping spot), which is dotted with 22 waterfalls snaking their way down the mountainside, interspersed with crystal clear pools for a cooling dip. EXPERIENCE

5 benefits of holidaying solo Solo trips on the rise as travellers opt for ‘alone-time’.

The freedom to explore unfamiliar places, and enjoy different experiences unhindered, are compelling reasons for travelling alone. Reports show an increase in solo travel – one in six people (15%) are now choosing to go on holiday by themselves (up from 12% and 6% in the preceding two years). According to Shaun Lamont, Managing Director First Group Hotels and Resorts, the benefits to travelling solo are myriad.

No compromising

Travelling alone can be incredibly liberating, giving you the freedom to do exactly what you want to do, when you want to do it. You don’t have to compromise on your destination, itinerary or activities, and there’s no arguing about where to go next.

Time out

Relaxation and time to unwind is often the number one motivator for solo leisure travel, as well as getting away from routine. Solo trips mean there's less pressure to be on-the-go all the time.

Spend less, see more

Blowing your budget on activities and experiences that don’t float your boat will frustrate you. Choosing only what you want to do and see, rather than

www.rovesa.co.za

tagging along with the rest, will result in you being able to see more and spend less.

Get to know yourself a little better

Solo travel is a lifechanging experience, helping you discover who you are. By pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you’ll get used to doing things on your own, and may even surprise yourself.

Make new friends

Travelling alone will make it easier to meet new people you may otherwise never have met, as a single person is more approachable than a couple.

HIKING SAFETY

Snaking about Sizzling hot summers brings us all out to play, including some slithering creatures. Mike Perry of African Reptiles and Venom gives hikers some safety tips on what to look out for to prevent being bitten.

As it heats up and rains begin to fall, snakes are emerging from their hiding places to hunt and mate. Although Southern Africa has approximately 175 species of snakes, only a small percentage of them are venomous enough to cause harm. These are the black and green mamba, cobras and large adders like gaboon and puff adders.

Kings of camouflage

Hikers on a trail will be more likely encounter snakes that use camouflage as their first defense. While difficult to spot, a puff adder might lie on the trail, or a berg adder might bask in the sun on a rock where you want to place your hands to pull yourself up. Eighty five percent (85%) of snakebites occur below the knee, with about 12% of bites on the hands. Green mambas are not likely to be encountered on a hiking trail, but hikers might cross paths with black mambas and different types of cobras. Cape cobras, puff and berg adders are most likely to be encountered in the Western Cape, whereas you are more likely to cross paths with a black mamba, snouted cobra or Mozambique spitting cobra in the Magaliesberg, Waterberg and Mpumalanga regions. A black mamba will quickly move off unless you are directly in its path on the way to its hole in the ground or other safety. This is easy to rectify as the snake will slide pass you if you move a few steps distance to the left or right side.

66 | December 2021

www.rovesa.co.za

HIKING SAFETY Tips when encountering a snake and how to avoid being bitten

Snakes cannot see very well and often rely on movement to locate an aggressor or prey. When coming face to face with any snake, immediately freeze, do a mental count to 30 and slowly back away. This will give the snake sufficient time to relax. Generally, if you are about 3-5 metres away, there is a very low risk of being bitten. It’s advisable to use a walking stick or something similar when on a trail. This can be used to move a smaller or stockier species of snakes out of the way. Never touch any snakes with your hands unless you can positively identify the snake. Little black snakes that come out after the rains are not always harmless and they are not mole snakes. It can be a stiletto snake, which causes a lot of snakebites in SA. This bite will cause a lot of pain, swelling and will ruin your hiking trip. They can never be held safely by hand without you getting bitten as they have fangs that can protrude from the underside of the jaw that they use for gaffing. Although not a deadly bite, the recovery from a stiletto snake bite is long and painful. Most snakebites happen during a certain period in the day, and this is in the early hours of the evening. Fifty percent (50%) of snakebites take place within a five hour window, from 5pm to 10pm, because their prey such as rats, mice and frogs are active during this time. A top tip is to walk with a torch at night and wear shoes when having to walk in the dark. The snake species that cause the most bites are puff adders, night adders, stiletto snakes and Mozambique spitting cobras. The latter are notorious for creeping into people’s beds and biting unsuspecting victims whilst they sleep. It is therefore advisable to shake out bedding prior to getting into bed, particularly when on a hiking trail, to ensure that you have no slithery sleeping companions. Mozambique spitting cobras cause a painful progressive swelling syndrome, which can be treated successfully with anti-venom if done on time.

www.rovesa.co.za

Pic credit: Mike Perry Pic credit: Mike Perry

Syndromes associated with different species

Progressive weakness syndrome is caused by mambas and non-spitting cobras, which can be treated with anti-venom. The first aid to use is immobilisation, to stay calm and call someone. For a black mamba bite a tourniquet may be applied to save the life of a victim, especially if hiking solo. This tourniquet must never be removed prior to the victim receiving antivenom. Painful progressive swelling is caused by most adders, stiletto snakes and spitting cobras. Never use a tourniquet or pressure bandages for bites from these snakes, as it may lead to amputation. The first aid for these bites is to remove any constrictive clothing and move the limb for a while to ensure the venom is not concentrated in one area and rather diluted into the rest of the body. You will have sufficient time to reach a hospital and it is therefore advisable for the victim to keep moving towards help. If a snake spits venom into the eyes, rinse eyes out for at least 15 minutes with clean water immediately. It’s best not to use any other liquids if you have water available. A visit to a doctor afterwards to check out your eyes may be required.

To help prevent snakebite on a hiking trail, do the following: • • • • •

Always wear sturdy boots or snakebite gaiters, and be careful when stepping over rocks and tree trunks. Never place your hands where you cannot see, whether climbing over rocks or collecting firewood. Be aware of your surroundings and watch carefully where you walk. Always use a torch when walking at night, and never walk barefoot or with sandals. When using an outdoor bathroom be extra careful as snakes like to hide in outdoor toilets and bathrooms.

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES

Upland Organic Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 This is a unique wine, most unusual due to the absence of sulphites and any animal products, a vegan wine that is un-fined. This wine has an intense character and is deep ruby in colour. The nose is redolent with flavours of rich red fruits, with background hints of forest floor aromas. Complex flavours emerge as the wine breathes. Rich vanillas round off the taste. The wine has a full mouth-feel, firm ripe tannins and a long, dry finish. Food pairing: Robust meats, venison, game, cheese. (The wine just screams for a steak.)

Raka Sauvignon Blanc 2021 Pale straw colour with a lavish bouquet of grapefruit, kumquat, granadilla and a touch of gooseberries. These characters follow through to the palate complemented by mineral tones true to the decomposed sandstone in which the Sauvignon Blanc is cultivated. Crisp green apple finish. Food pairing: Served well chilled, this wine is well suited to any seafood and cold meats. Also delightful on its own!

Bellevue Pinotage 2017 Roodeberg Classic Red Blend This famous red blend shows aromatic layers of fresh red fruit, cassis and dark fruit with an undertone of spices and dark chocolate. The palate is elegant and soft with nuances of cedary oak and dark plums, ends off with an elegant silky tannins.

This is a rich concentrated wine with perfumed fragrances of raspberry, maraschino cherry, ripe plum and cedar wood. The nose and palate is supported by dense, fine-grained tannins that ends in a long, clean, lingering mouthfeel. Food pairing: Serve with red meat dishes.

Food pairing: Enjoy on its own or as an accompaniment to roast, grilled and barbequed red meat and chicken dishes.

Meerendal Merlot 2020 The wine has a dark red colour and shows an abundance of red and dark fruit such as cherries, raspberries, plumbs and an undertone of tomato leaf and dark chocolate. The elegant tannins of the wine are supported by the use of 20% new oak. Food pairing: The ideal wine for any tomato-based dishes, steaks, charcuterie and cheese boards.

www.rovesa.co.za

Slanghoek Pinotage 2019 This wine is medium-bodied with delicate spices and oak nuances on the nose followed by inviting black cherry and ripe strawberry flavours on the palate. Displays smooth tannins and a well-rounded, fruity aftertaste. Food pairing: Hearty dishes like ratatouille, bobotie or Cape Malay style curries pair very well with this juicy wine. If you are more adventurous, try pairing this wine with slow roasted, pulled duck with plum siracha sauce or roasted Springbok shanks with dates.

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES

KWV Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 This vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon exudes aromas of ripe plums and blueberries with hints of cigar box, mint, herbs and cedary oak. The wellbalanced tannin structure ensures good length and a lasting finish. Food pairing: Enjoy this wine on its own or serve with grilled meats, casserole dishes or barbeques.

Val Du Charron Four white legs This wine is a pale gold in colour with a soft green tint. Ripe supple peach and apricot welcomes you on the nose, nuances of lime and a hint of sweet caramel on the palette. A medium bodied wine with good mid palate width, a fresh acidity and lingering dry finish. Food pairing: Serve with Thai green curry, lobster thermidor and kingklip.

Rickety Bridge Brut Rose NV An appealing light salmony pink with a delicate expression on the nose of citrus notes and hints of red berries. On the palate crisp freshness combines seamlessly with classic richness and finishes with finesse. Fine continuous mousse kisses the palate and lifts the wine to a long elegant finish. Food paring: Serve with oysters, seared salmon and sushi, or with desserts such as berry pavlova.

78 | December 2021

La Motte 2019 Chardonnay This wine has a straw colour and is slightly riper than other vintages. Fruity nectarine and citrus blossoms on the nose, with hints of cashew and lees are the only evidence of wood maturation. A juicy and polished entry, medium full with lots of citrus and juicy peach on the palate. Lively length with good freshness for a wood-matured wine. Food pairing: A classic option with creamy cheese and egg dishes such as quiche and soufflé, it is also a beautiful partner to subtle spice and curries. With its creamy undertones and elegant character, it makes for a classic combination with seafood – from the luxurious choices of caviar, snails, crayfish and pâté to the simplicity of mussels.

Meerendal Sauvignon Blanc 2021 A crisp and zesty wine that displays multiple layers of tropical fruit such as pineapple, gooseberries, guavas and green notes like lemon grass, green fig, asparagus with a distinct note of salinity and minerality. Food pairing: The ideal wine for fresh oysters with lemon juice, a touch of chillies, fresh green salads and seafood dishes.

Raka Biography Shiraz 2018 Deep ruby garnet. Spicy nose with black-pepper and dark berry fruit. Black forest cake on the palate with a red berry finish and elegant spice. Fine and grainy tannins on the aftertaste. Food pairing: Best served with beef stew or pie, mutton, kidney, liver or tripe, young cheddar, steak, braised steak with pepper sauce, pizza with meaty toppings, bacon and smoked salami.

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES

Boland Cellar One Formation Chenin Blanc This crisp, fresh and intensely flavoured wine expresses layers of lime and tropical fruit, together with green melons and pears. The extended lees contact delivers a rich creamy element, providing a full structure and complexity with a lingering finish. The result is a balanced wine with elegance, fruit structure and freshness. Food pairing: Ideally paired with poultry and seafood dishes.

KWV Sauvignon Blanc 2021 This elegant and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc shows aromas of passion fruit, lime and guava. The easydrinking palate is soft, fleshy and juicy with hints of asparagus and a chalky minerality. The wine is balanced and has a seamless finish. Food pairing: Enjoy this wine on its own or with seafood including sushi, white meat dishes or a variety of cheeses. It is best served chilled.

Val Du Charron Black Countess From dark and seductive origins comes a perfumed, curvaceous yet elegant wine with hints of red berries. Velvety tannins and sweet cranberry and cherry flavours create a richness to this first date wine with a lingering aftertaste where the red fruit aromas dominate and the oak creates a basis for the fruit to express itself. Food pairing: Serve with well-aged beef, game and chocolate rich desserts.

www.rovesa.co.za

Slanghoek Chardonnay 2021 This wine has delicate oak nuances on the nose followed by fresh citrus and crisp apple flavours on palate. Full-bodied with a complex and fruity finish. Food pairing: Enjoy with a lovely creamy pasta like fettuccine Alfredo or carbonara. It will also pair well with fish dishes like grilled sole topped with lemon butter.

uniWines DaschBosch This wine rewards with shades of lemon and straw in the glass and evokes an earthy character of wet stone, hints of ripe citrus and spice on the nose. A multi-layered wine with substantial complexity spilling over to the palate with riveting fruit concentration and ending in a long, silky finish. Food pairing: Perfect with creamy chicken and seafood dishes.

Jordan The Long Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon Progressive techniques such as overhead fermenters, pump-overs and gravity flow allow for the extraction of fully developed flavours and soft ripe tannins without compensating the tension and elegance captured from the various cabernet slopes. Here especially, the climate plays a significant role to allow great fruit expression and classic essences of cedar, brambles and toasted tobacco. Food pairing: Pairs well with lamb, roast beef or on its own next to the fire.

Limpopo Looking at Lephalale

The heartbeat of the bushveld… This is the place you head to when you seek tranquillity and escape from the usual. It’s the place where you can still observe majestic sunsets and star-gaze to your heart’s content. Lephalale is famed for coal and hunting (a reported 63% of all hunting in SA takes place in this area), but it really is so much more with an incredibly rich biosphere, history and culture. The attraction of Lephalale lies in its expansive bushveld beauty. While many parts of South Africa offer great bush experiences, the surrounding nature areas of Lephalale are almost untouched with views of rugged landscapes, valleys and wildnersness stretching as far as the eye can see. Once you drive out of the main town past the coal mines and head towards the bush, there is an immediate peace that is only disturbed by the antics of the various animals you come across. The silence, which can be a bit disconcerting at first, begins to feel quite comforting as your breakaway progresses.

An abundance of fauna and flora

This is the place to head to when you crave nature.

92 | December 2021

The Lephalale area is part of the Waterberg Biosphere – one of 500 UNESCO recognised biosphere reserves on the planet. Interestingly, the Waterberg Biosphere is the only savannah biosphere reserve in the world. Mammal species in the area include: nyala, white rhinoceros, giraffe, waterbuck, oryx, eland, zebra, impala, caracal, African wildcat, brown hyena, black-backed jackal and leopard. The area is also considered a birding paradise with over 250 bird species identified including: red-billed oxpecker and white-backed vulture. There are a variety of accommodation options from rustic and luxury game farms to camp spots. In addition to rest and game viewing, there are hiking activities, water activities and cultural tours.

Lephalale means “to flow". It is situated on the Moloko River (a tributary of the Limpopo River) and is approximately 60km from the Botswana border. In 2012, a large community of baboon spiders were discovered in the area during a road project. As these species are protected under the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 175, a new habitat was found, and the spiders were relocated. Lephalale is annually the first area to produce watermelons sold to the general market. The town of Lephalale was originally known as Ellisras. Late Iron Age cattle posts belonging to the Letsibogo ceramic facies have been found in the area. The Mokolo Dam is a popular fishing destination. Lephalale has one of the largest open grove coal mines in the world (Grootgeluk). Matimba is the largest direct dry cooling power station in the world.

MENTAL HEALTH

Switching off in a world that is always on: 5 tips to totally ‘switch off’ on holiday The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns seem to have blurred the lines between work, home and play, making it tough for employees and entrepreneurs to completely switch off and reap the benefits of any down time they may be able to carve out for themselves.

96 | December 2021

www.rovesa.co.za

MENTAL HEALTH

“The stress of the last year has seen a person work harder than ever to protect their livelihoods, which is why taking well-deserved break has become more important than ever,” says Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, going on holiday improves your physical health by decreasing the risk of heart disease, and improving mental health by reducing depression and anxiety. Lamont says that that whilst most recognise the benefits of going on holiday, many are failing to reap those benefits. He further notes, “We have witnessed first-hand the lines of pleasure being blurred by business as more and more of our guests are plagued with work whilst on vacation. “Going on holiday is the equivalent of sending your brain in for its annual service. You wouldn’t let your car skip its annual check-up and risk a breakdown on the highway, so why do this to your body? Equally essential to taking the time off to go away, is ensuring that you maximise the health benefits thereof by totally embracing the moment.”

www.rovesa.co.za

5 tips on how to switch off on holiday 1 Do a proper hand over to your stand in The key to a successful stress-free, work-free holiday is a comprehensive hand over. Ease into the idea of being away, by using your email signature to notify everybody of your upcoming leave (way before you’ve even left). Find a reliable, capable colleague who you can trust to be a point of contact in your absence, and hand over any and all outstanding pieces of work to them. Tell your clients, manager/s and employees that you will be uncontactable (gulp), set your out of office message and update your voicemail (if you still have one).

2

Turn off your phone

As scary as this may sound for someone who is always available, this is a biggie. Unless you turn your phone off totally (putting it on silent just won’t cut it), there will still be messages, emails, news alerts, and app notifications coming through constantly. Your phone is always screaming for your attention so vow to only check it once a day.

3 Take time to unwind and take it easy

Resolve to do less. Don’t try to fill your daily itinerary with as much as possible. Pick just one thing per day – one sight to see, one restaurant to try, one mountain to climb… and then relax for the rest of the day. Laze at the pool, read a book, take an afternoon siesta. You don’t want

to feel like you need a holiday from your holiday.

4

Pick the right accommodation

Where you stay can affect your entire holiday experience. If you are travelling with children, make sure you go to a child-friendly resort. If you are going away without the kids, consider a quieter hotel/ resort. If you hate the beach, don’t pick a beach holiday – you’ll be miserable.

5

Be present in the moment

Delay the desire to post every photo on social media. Be present in every moment and make lasting, magical memories with your travel crew. If you want to capture the moment, ensure that your data/Wi-Fi on your phone is turned off, so you don’t get tempted into checking notifications. Just use your camera and post the pics later. For those who absolutely can’t afford time off work, Lamont suggests considering a workation. “Covid has changes the rules of work. You no longer have to be confined to the four walls of your dining room or office cubicle. Instead, you can choose to work from some of South Africa’s most beautiful spots and be surrounded by nature or have a sea view. First Group properties, for example, lend themselves to catching up on Zoom or Teams and then taking a break to soak up the scenery – a wonderful balance of work and play. After all, if you’re going to work, why not make it the best of it?”, concludes Lamont.

Beat the burn, be SunSmart! The days are longer, sandals have replaced slippers and we’re venturing outdoors. This can only mean one thing; summer is here! The excitement can be felt, literally, on our skin. Did you know that sunburn can occur within 15 minutes, causing permanent, irreversible damage which adds up with each exposure to the sun? Over time, this damage may lead to skin cancer, which is why the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) urges all South Africans to be SunSmart and serious about protecting their skin. The World Cancer Research Fund says that skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. South Africa has one of the highest monitored ultraviolet (UV) levels in the world, and one of the highest incidences of skin cancer globally.

104 | December 2021

Additionally, although people with blonde or red head hair with light skin, freckles and green or blue eyes are more at risk for sunburn and skin damage, it’s important to remember that everyone, regardless of their ethnic group, is at risk of getting skin cancer.

Early detection of skin cancer is key to beating it Lorraine Govender, CANSA’s National Manager for Health Promotion, says, “It’s vital to be aware of changes to your skin – early detection of skin cancer is key to beating it. CANSA

www.rovesa.co.za

HEALTH

provides information and resources to enable you to keep up to date with your monthly skin checks using the ABCDE guidelines to look out for warning signs. Ask a family member or friend to assist in examining hard to reach places, such as your back and top of your head." CANSA offers FotoFinder skin screenings at most CANSA Care Centres around South Africa. Govender explains that FotoFinder screening is an all-inone dermoscopic skin cancer screening and mole mapping using a dermascope device – the imaging system of choice by thousands of dermatologists worldwide. The system automatically links digital dermoscopic images of moles to an overview image, making the identification and tracking of lesions easy. Should any abnormalities be picked up, a referral will be made to a dermatologist. It’s however, necessary to book an appointment as the FotoFinders roam between the CANSA Care Centres. “CANSA has also partnered with Miiskin – a free userfriendly app that assists in

www.rovesa.co.za

monitoring changes. It may not be a diagnostic tool and does not replace a visit to the dermatologist or doctor, however it helps raise the alarm on skin changes which may then be further investigated by a professional – perfect for those on the go,” adds Govender.

Being SunSmart doesn’t only apply to the summer months UV radiation is just as dangerous for outdoor labourers, sports people, on

the playground or when driving to work as it is when at the beach or pool. Using sunscreen is only one way in which to protect yourself in the sun. Avoid direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm when the sun’s rays are most dangerous. Stay in the shade or under an (UV protective) umbrella as much as possible. UV rays reflect off cement, water, sand, glass and grass and can therefore cause sunburn in the shade.

With the following guidelines from CANSA, being SunSmart is as easy as 1, 2, 3: 1. Use an effective sunscreen

Be sure to use a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of between 20 and 50, and 30 and 50 for fair to very fair skin. Products usually expire two years after manufacture hence don’t use a product that has been opened and used after a year has passed. The CANSA Seal of Recognition logo appears on approved sunscreen products and is a guarantee that the manufacturers of these UV protective products have complied with CANSA’s strict set of criteria.

2. Apply sunscreen correctly

It’s important to know the best SPF for your skin-type. Always apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outside and re-apply at least every two hours after towel drying, perspiring or swimming.

3. Invest in UV protective clothing and gear

Wear sunglasses with a UV protection rating of UV400. Wear protective clothing and swimsuits and thickly woven fabric hats with wide brims – avoid caps where the neck and ears are exposed. UV protective umbrellas bearing the CANSA Seal of Recognition should be part of your protection kit. Look out for CANSA’s swing tags and Smart Choice logo on clothing, hats and summer fun accessories. “We also need to remember that there is no such thing as a healthy tan. Sunbeds, sunlamps and sunless or self-tanning products are just as harmful and can lead to damage which may cause skin cancer,” Govender concludes. For more information and advice, contact your nearest CANSA Care Centre or the CANSA Help Desk via the toll free line: 0800 22 66 22 l info@cansa.org.za. l www.cansa.org.za
