Despite the forecast, live like it's Spring. ― Lilly Pulitzer
Spring has sprung! Make your soul bloom by spending more time outdoors and being adventurous. It’s a season when wildflowers peep out from the soil, trees blossom and the sun is shining bright after the long dark winter days, giving meaning to new life and new opportunities. After all, September is annual Tourism Month which highlights the importance of the sector in South Africa; all South Africans should be inspired to support local tourism. We have such a diversity of adventurous activities, places to visit, and things to explore. Spring is the perfect time to get out and about while the days are not too hot yet, or too cold – the perfect getaway season of the year. We also celebrate National Heritage Day, informally known as ‘National Braai Day’ which is celebrated each year on 24 September, to commemorate our diverse cultures and traditions that make us all proud South Africans. Many of us also refer to Spring as the ‘season of love’, and we introduce you to a few romantic getaways in this edition of ROVE SA. Book your romantic getaway now and reignite that spark in your relationship. Couples that travel together, stay together! Thanks to all our advertisers and contributors for being part of making this edition special, and with a bit more ‘spring’. Wishing you a bright, warm and beautiful Spring!

Discover the joy of slowing down at the West Coast’s most iconic brewery
T
he cosy town of Darling in the Western Cape is home to Darling Brew – a craft
brewery where small-batch beer is made
with big passion. This much was evident when
Darling Brew recently received 7 awards at the 2021 African Beer Cup.
The brewery and Tasteroom also happen to be
a spectacular stopover on any journey along the West Coast. This is the ideal spot to take a rest,
enjoy a refreshing beverage, and tuck into some
seriously good eats while you overlook the inner workings of the brewery.
Come on over and slow down at Darling Brew.
FOREWORD Alderman James Vos
While we are well-known for these attractions, anyone who’s been here knows that there’s much more to the Mother City. We might not be able to win awards for it but for me, our most award-worthy attraction is our people. Cape Town comes alive through the cultures, cuisine, languages, smiles, and energy of those who live in it. It’s because of the economic benefits of tourism, that I’ve motivated for the following: • City funding towards the Air Access initiative, our aviation partner whose priority is securing more flights to the city; and more recently, • Cruise Cape Town, a new joint initiative aimed at making the Mother City a destination of choice for the lucrative cruise market; and • Cape Town Tourism, our official Destination Marketing Organisation who showcases Cape Town's tourism value proposition on a 4 | September 2021
With challenge comes opportunity This month, I’ll be keeping a close eye on the World Travel Awards website for the announcement of winners of the most prestigious accolades in the industry. Cape Town again stands to come out on top for its beloved landmarks such as Table Mountain, Cape Town International Airport, V&A Waterfront, and Robben Island. global and local stage, while bolstering tourism service providers. Because, while Cape Town has often featured on global ‘top 10 must-visit’ lists, the Covid-19 pandemic has made it clearer than ever that industries such as tourism cannot afford to stagnate and must innovate, evolve and diversify in order to survive and thrive. Early on in the pandemic, we developed a ‘Bounce Back Strategy’ detailing the avenues through which we would help the industry recover and stimulate supply and demand from specific source markets. The strategy is underpinned by our City’s Six-Pillar Destination Marketing & Communication Initiative which positions Cape Town as the premier destination in Africa to Visit, Live, Work, Study, Play and Invest. As a result, we’ve seen the hospitality and tourism sectors claw back losses after a tough 2020. Flights to Cape Town International Airport are on the rise and
local hospitality businesses have also seen a resultant increase in business. Now is the time to build on that with a focus on key areas such as affordability of products and services, the use of smart and simple technology for more seamless travel, marketing to domestic and international travellers who are itching to visit and building community tourism initiatives that show the unique diversity and culture of Cape Town. We are also monitoring newer trends such as that of digital nomads and I have actually been lobbying National Government for the launch of a remote worker visa. Other countries have had great success with this type of visa, and it would give South Africa greater appeal to a broader category of tourist. I think it’s safe to say that this past year-and-a-half has been nothing short of challenging. But with challenge comes opportunity. By looking ahead and working closely with our partners, Cape Town will soon be booming with visitors again!

Get in a ‘good space’
Cape Town and the Western Cape The past 18 months have been hard. Confined to your homes for long periods of time, with uncertainty a constant; never have you needed a break from the grind more than now. Graig Howes
What you need is wide open spaces, clean air, and nature. You need the warmth and humanity of the people around you. You need to find the right space, a good place to put yourself back together. Not only do you need it, but you also deserve it. Thankfully Cape Town and the Western Cape has an abundance of all of that and more. It has everything an aspiring traveller needs to recover

from a year like no other. If ever there was a place to find the right space for some much-needed rest and recuperation, it is here, waiting to be found.
Cape Town welcomes visitors with open arms
Cape Town has long been a favourite destination for travellers. But then with the city’s natural beauty, wide
array of activities on offer and residents that welcome visitors with open arms, that’s hardly a surprise. With a history as rich as it is diverse, Cape Town is a place alive with possibility, a tantalising and heady mix of cultures, blended in a tumultuous past, to create one of the world’s most cosmopolitan and enticing cities. One of the most beautiful places on earth,

the Mother City continues to draw the world to its warm embrace, whether it is those seeking adventure and new experiences or merely just a welldeserved break. But beyond the borders of the Mother City, lie five regions ripe for adventure! All lay claim to a unique charm and allure, a diversity of place, but all are linked together by their ability to surprise and delight those who are willing to immerse themselves in everything that they offer.
Cape Overberg – a gentleness that allows you to take a breath
Nestled between the Cape Peninsula and the Garden Route, there is a gentleness about the Cape Overberg, an idyllic country feel that allows you to take a deep breath, release the tension in your shoulders and find peace in the tranquillity of it all. From MTB tracks and wine farms in Elgin, to coastal meanders and sundowners in Hermanus, canoeing in Stanford to walks along the treacherous coast of the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, the Cape Overberg offers something for everyone, no matter what you are looking for.
Cape Winelands – intrinsically tied to the vine
The Cape Winelands has always been intrinsically tied to the vine, famous for its world-class vintages and globally renowned for its tastings and pairings. The mere mention of towns like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek emote visions of fine dining and luxury, the very best that the Cape has to offer. But the region is so much more than that. 12 | September 2021

For all its fineries, there is also a ruggedness and natural beauty, as well as a warmth and charm that is often overlooked. From the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve to the awe-inspiring mountain passes of Robertson and beyond, you might think you know the Cape Winelands, but we promise you, you have barely scratched the surface.
Garden Route and Klein Karoo – big adventures, bigger experiences
You will struggle to find a more epic road trip than through the Garden Route and Klein Karoo. Iconic doesn’t even come close when you travel through the coastal towns of Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay, stopping over in inland gems like Barrydale and Oudtshoorn. Big adventure awaits you here and even bigger experiences. Take on the world’s highest bridge bungee jump, swim with seals and ride Dragon Dune – South Africa’s longest sandboard run. You want an adrenaline fix? The Garden Route and Klein Karoo is happy to oblige. But it’s more than ‘whoops’, ‘hollers’ and ‘screams’, because you can slow things down here as well. Enjoy a moment of peace at a boutique bungalow overlooking the river, savour sundowners on the beach or watch the sky paint a tapestry of stars in the Klein Karoo. There is an untamed magic that you will find here and it’s like nothing you have ever seen.
Weskus – a world apart
The Weskus is a ‘vibe’. It is a world apart, with a diversity of people and spaces like nowhere else on the planet. From the rocky outcrops of the Cederberg to the reef breaks in Lambert’s Bay, from Farmer Burger’s www.rovesa.co.za

bungalows to seafood platters on a jetty, this is where you go to immerse yourself in all that is good. There is a warmth and hospitality that resonates throughout the region and the people will welcome you with open arms, always ready for a ‘lekker kuier (visit)’, armed with stories of years gone by. The Weskus is a place of rugged beauty and earthy charms, but there is also a burgeoning arts scene, a strong cultural movement and plenty of options for lovers of adventure and those looking for something a little more luxurious.
Cape Karoo – wide open spaces
You want wide open spaces, magical sunsets (and sunrises), clear skies in the day and starry, starry nights? The Cape Karoo is calling. Here you will find beauty in the starkness, the long, winding 14 | September 2021
passes and the centuries-old rock formations that dot this incredible arid landscape. You will also find people with genuine kindness and warmth, ready to welcome you with open arms and a beaming smile. From the old dame of the Cape Karoo that is Matjiesfontein to freeroaming cheetahs, beers at sunset or a glass of wine at the fire, this is a place that is tailormade for escaping the city grind, to unwind and to recover. It is a land where time moves slowly, happy with the small pleasures, jubilant in its almost magical silence, but it is also place of incredible history and culture, artistry, and gourmet food.
Come find your ‘good space’
Whether you’re exploring the Mother City or the five regions outside its limits, there is a diversity of people and experiences that is quite simply breathtaking. From the vast open spaces of the Cape
Karoo to the rocky outcrops, and coastal stretches of the Weskus, the lush green valleys of the Cape Overberg and vineyards of the Cape Winelands, to the sheer splendour of the Garden Route and Klein Karoo, there is the perfect spot for everyone to enjoy some much-needed downtime. So, come find your space and find yourself!

FORMER MISS UNIVERSE FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE BEAUTY OF KZN
It was a case of beauty versus beauty when one of the world’s most popular personalities in 2019, former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, visited a luxury Northern KwaZulu-Natal holiday resort recently. 20 | September 2021

Zozibini said she did not have to think twice when the offer came up to visit KZN.
“The weather in KZN has been fantastic. But for the nippy mornings and evenings, it is balmy during the day. I got to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery on the game drives and was so close to cheetahs, rhinos and elephants.”
“I just had to make sure I had my Spotify music playlist music ready to jam too,” she said with a twinkle.
Makakatana Bay Lodge
The attractive and gentle 27-year-old had some down time away from the hustle and bustle and vacationed at Makakatana Bay Lodge. She said during a game drive she was most happy being on South African soil and that the St Lucia region had to be “paradise on earth”. “Staying at Makakatana Bay Lodge has been most refreshing – the staff www.rovesa.co.za

TRAVEL: CELEB TALK
“She is a very kind and friendly person and we were so happy that she could be comfortable at the lodge and we were able to give her a memorable stay. “We were so fortunate to have had the opportunity to expose the iSimangaliso Wetland Park to Zozibini and offered her a true wildlife experience.”
iSimangaliso Wetland Park
KwaZulu-Natal, the exceptional Zulu Kingdom, is a province which boasts two World Heritage Sites, one being the iSimangaliso Wetland Park situated along the coast of South Africa’s KZN Province. iSimangaliso Wetland Park incorporates a wide range of pristine marine, coastal, wetland, estuarine, and terrestrial environments which are scenically beautiful and basically unmodified by people. The park lives up to the meaning of its name – “miracle and wonder”. This suitably describes the unique place. Sibusiso Bukhosini, CEO of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, said: “Visitors get to have the best of both worlds and experience Africa’s largest estuarine system and the incredible wildlife and nature. “The 332 000 hectare park offers its visitors a fun packed day and afternoon game drive riding along rhino’s, cheetah’s, elephants, hippos and so much more animals. “For people who want to relax and have picnics with their families, the park has popular beach destinations that are found at Cape Vidal and Missions Rocks.”
22 | September 2021
Phindile Makwakwa, Acting CEO of Tourism KZN, said: “We were thrilled when we heard one of South Africa’s biggest exports, Zozibini Tunzi had KZN on her bucket list as a travel destination and we were confident that she would be enthralled by the beauty of Simangaliso. “We are proud of Makakatana Bay Lodge for pulling out all stops to make her stay memorable. We are looking forward to welcoming more travellers into the KZN for them to also have their own experiences of our beautiful province.” Zozibini hopes to come back to KwaZulu-Natal. “This province is so beautiful. There is so much to see and enjoy. I will be back soon,” she said. For more information, visit www.zulu.org.za

capture memories for life. Our stop at Robertson Winery made me realised once again that when people have passion and a zest for good taste in life, you will succeed. Believe it or not, Robertson’s stone church, built by the community, was no longer used by 1941, which made it the perfect place to establish Robertson Winery. The church was converted for winemaking and cellaring operations. We were welcomed at the historical winery with warm handshakes and taken on an educational tour through the winery and its underground cellars. We were able to see the beauty of the valley when we climbed on top of the wine tanks. Further on we made a stop at Sheilam Cactus and Succulent Nursery which is located near Robertson, boasting nearly 2 000 species of plants. For the plant enthusiasts, here you can discover a variety of plants such as The Old Man of Peru, Mother-in-Law's-Chair, Horses' Teeth, Elephant Feet, Klipplante (stone plants), Bushman's Grape and lots more! Sheilam Cactus and Succulent Nursery has also recognised as one of the finest collections of specimen plants.

On our way out we stopped at Marbrin Olive Growers which is a family-run farm producing awardwinning boutique olive products. Quirky owners Clive and Briony are infectious with their bubbly and friendly personalities, which made us feel at home from the moment we walked into the tasting room. Clive is a chef by profession and can also cater for large groups of people on request who would like to enjoy a delicious lunch out of the hustle and bustle of the town or city. The views are gorgeous, the atmosphere is friendly, and you can enjoy the best of their olive product tastings served with passion and gratitude by the owners themselves. Time caught up with us and we had to hit the road to our next destination, which was the beautiful and historic wine farm, Viljoensdrift, nestled south of the Elandsberg Mountains on the banks of the Breede River. Here you can enjoy some of their lovely wines outside on the deck or pack a picnic basket from their deli and take it with on the boat cruise or have a picnic on the lawn on the banks of the river. This is a wonderfully romantic breakaway for day visitors. Personally, I have to recommend their Muskapino which is a sweet sparkling Rose wine as the perfect picnic companion.

Our next stop was at Van Loveren which is known for its award-winning wines. Its innovation and service are definitely the things that will bring you back time and again. The wine tastings are phenomenal and well presented. The establishment itself is inviting and offers a variety of wines, gin, craft beers and much more.
Our final stop in the valley was at Excelsior Wine Estate which is very popular for its blending experiences. The wooden tasting room is situated right at the farm dam with breathtakingly panoramic views of the vineyards and the Langeberg Mountains. Excelsior Wine Estate offer award-winning wines that are dependable, reliable and true, also crafting the biggest selling South African Cabernet in the USA. After a long day of indulging the picture-perfect Robertson valley, it was time to hit the R62 in our faithful IGNIS – holding position on the road firmly, it was time to show our true colours with conviction. The stretch between Robertson and the main gate at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is approximately one hour’s drive. Situated between the towns of Montague and Barrydale on the Route 62, the longest wine route in the world, this beautiful Little Karoo landscape is tucked away at the foot of the Warmwaterberg. The reserve stretches across 58 000 hectares of rich protected ecosystems within two biodiversity hotspots. The reserve has made history in the Western Cape with its registration as a non-profit organisation, following its rezoning from agricultural to conservational use. This is a milestone for conservation, particularly for the protection of threatened ecosystems, the reintroduction of wildlife and restoration of degraded habitats of rare species. On arrival at the reception lounge, which is approximately 12km from the main gate, we were welcomed by our friendly private game ranger who we followed through to Dwyka Tented Lodge for another 27km. On arrival we were once again welcomed by a team of friendly staff who took us to our beautiful, tented rooms which are right underneath the most beautiful mountains inhabited with baboons and other small wildlife species. It was an impressive moment when we entered our rooms which have top notch furnishings, a private deck and jacuzzi overlooking nature at its best.

After a few hours of relaxing and unwinding, we had a fantastic buffet dinner with the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, proudly sponsored by De Wetshof, in the boma under the African night skies, breathing fresh air and touching base with nature. The following day we were taken on two game drives where we experienced close-up encounters with wildlife and were well educated about birds and the various plant species in the vicinity of the reserve. A wake-up call early on our last morning saw us on another game drive, during which we were surprised with a world-class bush buffet breakfast. This was exceptionally well executed and served. Our dedicated game ranger made sure we experienced the best of the reserve. We also explored the quartz vygieveld, the wilderness area, renosterveld, fynbos, rock formations and rock art by a clan of San who inhabited the area 3 500 years ago. Some of the typical daily activities you can expect at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve include game drives, nature walks, bird watching, star gazing, rock art viewing, boat excursions, and relaxation retreats (due to COVID-19 no relaxation treatments are offered at the moment). I would highly recommend Sanbona Wildlife Reserve to both local and international travellers. It is a phenomenal experience. Headed out of the reserve, on our way back to the Cape Town, we took a turn off the R60 and made our final stop at Jan Harmsgat Country House where we enjoyed a delicious
homecooked Sunday lunch under the pecan nut trees. Jan Harmsgat Country House is about a two- hour drive from Cape Town off the N2 on the R60 as you head into the Garden Route. It boasts a beautiful farm style restaurant and lovely accommodation. After spending much needed time at Jan Harmsgat Country House we headed back to Cape Town with our IGNIS, which we have baptized ‘Faithful’. The bold character of the Suzuki Ignis combines distinctive headlights with a strong grille line. The roof flows into a round cabin supported by prominent fenders to provide extra headroom without spoiling the sleek design. This compact SUV is a hatchback that enables you to take on both urban and outdoor adventures. The Ignis helps you show your true colours.

INTERVIEW: CHEF TALK
Kleine Zalze's chef comes full circle
Chef Nick van Wyk, ex judge of the TV series, Kokkedoor, and now chef of the restaurant at Kleine Zalze Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, invited us for lunch to take us though his career.
38 | September 2021
www.rovesa.co.za
INTERVIEW: CHEF TALK
Kleine Zalze is where everything started for you. Can you tell us more about this opportunity and what impact this had on your career as a chef?
ran his kitchens with respect and you didn't want to let him down. He was a significant role model in my cooking career and someone I will always look up to.
It is here where I teamed up with Michael Brighton in 2004 and opened Terroir. I have always had lots of ideas and this meant I could execute them. It was also the first time I was responsible for a team. In a way it was my beginning as a chef. This all made me realise this was something I had wanted to do for the longest time. I think the biggest impact was meeting new people. Funnily enough, I have come full circle. I left here in 2007 but always stayed in contact. Now I am back here and chapter two with Kleine Zalze has begun.
And then there are amazing chefs all over the world you read about and you watch that inspire you too.
Was there ever a chef that inspired you the most and why?
Which type of cuisine is served at Kleine Zalze?
Yes, but I think it changes like seasons do. When I was really young, the first celebrity chef who inspired me was Keith Floyd. He was someone who visited many places, cooked and drank good wine and I thought to myself, "well, that's a good life!" I was also introduced to chef Nico Ladenis, who only started cooking at age 40 and was awarded his third Michelin-star at age 60! I loved his cook books and admired the way he talked about food. However, I think my biggest mentor and a person I look up to and still aspire to be like, is my first real boss, a guy called Franck Dangereux, who now owns The Foodbarn in Noordhoek. I spent three and a half years with Franck and I don’t think I would have been a chef today if it wasn’t for him. He is an amazing human being and a chef and taught me so much. He
www.rovesa.co.za
Do you think there are a lot of young chefs looking up to you now?
I hope so! I hope I have taught a couple of the younger generation a few new things. I hope the way I style and do things is something they appreciate. So yes, hopefully there are a couple of young chefs who don’t think I'm too bad and may want to carry on doing things the way I do.
France is my base when I start thinking about food. I was trained in a French style. I attended a cookery school with a French curriculum. I worked for a master French chef for three years. However, over the last couple of years I have realized that there are specific flavours in South Africa that I really like and enjoy so I am trying to incorporate those flavours into my cooking.
I don’t really like to choose a specific cuisine. France, Spain and Africa are the kinds of flavours I like in my food. It makes food feel 'warm'. My flavours and explorations definitely carry a touch of Spain and North Africa, and then there is definitely a lot of unique South African flavours, like the sweet and sour I try to incorporate into the food I cook. I think as a South African you will definitely recognise certain dishes on my menu and you will appreciate
certain flavours that you know from your childhood. You don’t often see that old style of cooking anymore, but I have tried to revive those flavours in a modern way. For example, I could cook a very French dish but bring out one or two flavours that you recognize as a South African.
Does the menu change seasonally?
Yes, it has to because it is sometimes difficult to find certain ingredients. You can't avoid having seasonal menus because in winter you expect to have hearty and comfort food, while in summer you expect more salad type food on the plate. We always try to make our diners happy. If you liked a dish on our winter menu and would like it in summer, we will always try and accommodate you as far as we can. However, sometimes the ingredients just won’t be available.
When it comes to food and wine pairing, how do you establish which type of food pairs well with a certain type of wine?
It's very simple. You eat and drink lots and then at some stage you figure out what goes with what. As a chef, I always taste the food first. That’s where my journey starts. I will first establish the profile and the flavour of the dish and then I will sit down and think about what wine would be served best with it. With my experience over the years, I know certain wines come with certain characteristics. For example, in winter with a nice creamy fish dish, my mind will immediately go to Chardonnay. Or if you think of a delicious game pie with a spicy or peppery sauce, you would think of Shiraz. If you understand the characteristics of wine and food it guides you to the perfect partnership.
September 2021 | 39
INTERVIEW: CHEF TALK
Are there any trends that you have noticed regarding food and wine pairing?
It’s becoming more informal because people have more choice. You are not going to tell people you have to drink this with this type of food. I think it's best to do a wine tasting and gain an understanding of the wine and put down different types of food and let people make the choice for themselves. In general, we are moving away from being too specific.
What would be the perfect spring dish customers could expect on the Kleine Zalze menu?
We will aim for a lighter approach. I always prefer something like a nice tartare on the menu, be it either in the form of fish, venison or beef, but something light done in an Asian style. And for a side, diners can expect salads with different types of dressings.
How do you normally react when a customer sends a meal back to the kitchen?
Sometimes customers can give the weirdest criticism just to avoid paying for a meal. Just be polite and honest. I always prefer constructive criticism. If a customer sends back a meal and tells me that it is no good, it will obviously not sit well with me. I’d prefer it if a customer tells me exactly what is wrong with the meal. For example, is the meal too salty? Is the meat undercooked? You do get customers who finish a meal and then complain about it. That doesn’t sit well with me at all! You finished the meal; you pay for it! Just be honest from the start if something is not to your liking. What would also be great is to consult with your waiter before you order a meal from a menu that you don’t really understand. If you don’t like a meal it doesn’t necessarily mean there is something wrong with the meal.
How would you best describe Kleine Zalze?
Kleine Zalze is a humble family wine farm, so it is definitely home away from home. It offers the best experience with its peaceful and tranquil surroundings. And for that reason, our food and wine match the farm and its surroundings.
What advice do you have for young upcoming chefs pursuing a career in the hospitality industry? First of all, you have to love what you do. And while you study you might not even realise that this is something that you really want to do for the rest of your life. I suggest that you work for a well-known chef without pay for a few weeks. Experience what it is really all about. If you really enjoy it, then further your studies. Spend as much time as possible with the right people in the industry. Kitchen knowledge is everything, so look and learn from the best and make it your own. Make it your hobby, love it and enjoy it.

Heritage Day
– National 'Braai' Day For many years South Africans have celebrated Heritage Day as National 'Braai' Day.
National Braai Day is celebrated every year on 24 September when South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their cultures and diversity. South Africans are generally referred to as a “rainbow nation” with 11 official languages, and we all aim to celebrate this day the same way. Smokes up, fires burn, the aromas of spiced meats and of celebrating with ice cold homebrewed South African beers, while also celebrating the first signs of Spring after a long Winter. Not only is this a day to be jolly, but it is also a day to remember our heritage and embrace our cultures.

a South African Cap Classique exclusively from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – no surprise at all given his passion for pioneering unique blends. This year, 2021, South Africa celebrates 50 years of creating Cap Classique wines, and Haute Cabrière is proud to be part of that foundation.
The early years
After many years spent in the vineyards of France and Germany while studying viticulture in Geisenheim, Achim returned to South Africa with a vision to create a South African Cap Classique that contends with the prestigious Champagne houses of France. After years of creating wine as cellar master for respected vineyards in the Cape, Achim set out on a www.rovesa.co.za
journey to build his own innovative cellar and to carve his personal legacy within the wine industry. He had a dream to establish a cellar that specialised in the wine styles of Champagne and Burgundy based on the philosophy, sun, soil, vine, man. Achim chose the land of Haute Cabrière based on what he found stuck to the soles of his shoes. While visiting possible sites, the Haute Cabrière soils left his boots covered in thick clay – something he was familiar with during his time in the Burgundy region of France where he had worn the exact same shoes in the vineyards. Soils such as these support ancient vines in France and now were discovered thousands of miles away in Franschhoek. An important discovery and the humble beginnings of Haute Cabrière.
The first farm of Haute Cabrière is acquired by Achim. He replants the neglected farmland with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Cellar construction begins. 1984 | Achim von Arnim’s first vintage While waiting for the young vines to establish on his land, Achim purchases grapes from friends: Chardonnay from Danie de Wet and Pinot Noir from Jannie Engelbrecht of Vrede en Lust. He begins to produce his first Cap Classique. This spends two years on the lees. 1986 | First Pierre Jourdan Brut Cap Classique Haute Cabrière releases Pierre Jourdan Brut, using a blend of exclusively Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Achim, true to French tradition, names the wine after the original 1694 landowner, French Huguenot, Pierre Jourdan.

ADVERTORIAL The next generation
Today, 35 years later, the Pierre Jourdan range of Cap Classique has expanded from the first Brut to include the prestigious Blanc de Blancs, Belle Rose, and the Belle Nectar Demi-Sec Rosé, loved locally in South Africa and abroad. Under the watchful eye of Achim’s son, cellar master Takuan von Arnim, the Haute Cabrière dream is expanded and achieved with each vintage founded on quality and authenticity in the cellar.
“My father uncovered and cut a diamond, and I am here to polish it,” comments Takuan. While the Pierre Jourdan range continues to offer a competitive price, it delivers on quality. In recent years, Takuan’s focus has been the Blanc de Blancs, the flagship Cap Classique. This wine is an ode to Champagne, specifically the region of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The wine centres around experimentation in time on the lees, something Takuan prides himself on and is in keeping with the pioneering spirit of Haute Cabrière.

A trip back in time
unique new self-guided historic route launches in Piketberg
A fascinating new self-guided tour has been launched in the town of Piketberg in the Western Cape, which takes visitors on a journey back in time to experience the rich history and historic buildings of this beautiful village. The Piketberg Historical Route takes visitors to the many historical buildings dotted throughout the town, which date back as far as the 1880s and is a wonderful outing for young and old.
About the route
Start your tour at the Piketberg Tourism offices at the Winkelshoek Complex, just off the N7 highway where you can collect a map of the historical route and find out all you need to know for your visit. While 50 | September 2021
you are there, be sure to grab a fresh traditional Roosterkoek and coffee to fuel up for the route ahead. You will then make your way to the impressive neo-gothic DutchReformed Church, which was built in 1882. The town developed around the church building as it was one of the first buildings in the village. The architect and builder was Carl Otto Hager, a well-known church architect of the time. He also drew the plans for the old Lutheran church and the rebuilding of the Mother Church, both in Stellenbosch, as well as several other churches erected in the second half of the 1800s. The church was built with Table Mountain sandstone,
excavated in the mountain to the west of Piketberg. Members of the congregation transported the building blocks to the site as well as other building materials to help keep the cost down. Just over the road from the Church lies points two and three of the tour – number 5 Kerk Straat, which was built in 1906 as a business premises, and the Commercial Hotel, which was built in 1898. Both buildings boast beautiful cast iron balustrades and 'broekie lace' – in keeping with the period in which they were built. The commercial hotel still features furniture which was shipped to South Africa from England and delivered to Piketberg by ox-wagon. The hotel has a www.rovesa.co.za

Proceeding from here, and all accessible by foot, visitors can visit the old sheriff’s office and original police station which were both built in 1926, as well as the original bioscope built in the early 1920’s. Not far from here lies the Piketberg Museum, which is made up of an original homestead as well as the former Jewish synagogue. The museum houses an award winning display of historic items that serve to further transport one back in time to a bygone era – highlighting the lifestyles of the early inhabitants of the town. including the historic cemetery, which offers great insights into the families and people that came before, and who made the town what it is today. In total the route has 12 points of interest and visitors can walk or drive to each at their leisure.
Where to eat
Time travel is hungry work. Good news for visitors is that Piketberg offers a wide selection of eateries to cater to all tastes. From a large franchise steakhouse to quaint coffee shops, cafés and restaurants – such as Bravo Wine & Food – all serving up a smorgasbord of sweet and savoury offerings. Two decades of excellence in organic wines. This is Org de Rac, the award-winning Swartland organic winery which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. The vision of the late Nico Bacon, who ensured that Org de Rac was committed to organic viticulture since day one, Org de Rac has grown from a fledgling upstart on the Cape wine scene to a major player with solid business in various export markets, as well as over the past few years winning awards for its diverse offering of quality wines. After two decades, the vision to make wine from vineyards farmed without any chemical fertilisers or pesticides has resulted in Org de Rac’s pristine soils allowing vines to grow grapes showcasing incredible flavours, the result of natural farming. This has led to an array of local awards for Org de Rac’s wines, which include Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as creative red and white blended wines. To offer its consumers an even more attractive proposition, Org de Rac recently revitalised its labels to better reflect the farm’s sense of place as well as to provide the market with a vivid and appealing label for its diverse range. Visitors to Org de Rac in the green heart of the Swartland can soon look forward to a new hospitality experience, too. A new tasting room is being built which will be an elegantly modern space committed solely to hospitality with a glass front offering stunning views of the Swartland. Staycations
ARE the new travel trend South Africans are taking out their smartphones and Instagramming their travels as local becomes ‘lekker’ again. Tourism and travel in South Africa has changed forever in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, SA’s Department of Tourism reveals in its 2021/2022 Annual Performance Plan. The tourism authority says travel restrictions and health and safety concerns are realising a huge shift in travel behaviour and preferences. “A post lockdown yearning for open spaces along with the desire to avoid crowded spaces has shifted remote, empty destinations to the top of many travellers' wish lists,” SA Tourism says, adding that travellers prefer 'staycations'.
What is a staycation?
It is travelling to nearby or local tourism attractions without any overnight stay. Or traveling to tourism destinations that are close to home. Road travel is often the preferred mode of travel for staycationers. One of the largest and most developed tourism markets in Africa, South Africa, is currently in the midst of its third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the adoption of a lockdown has witnessed a slowdown in visitors to this country. This means that staycations are here to stay, and will fuel demand for domestic leisure tourism. South Africans will benefit from the increased demand for staycations in 2021, and let’s face it; this country offers diverse beauty, so people

current trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing power in smartphones.
The staycation boom is set to deepen as locals look for safe, relaxing venues that are set in the wide-open spaces, and because South Africans are capturing feel good memories with their smartphones, and sharing these via social media.
The Counterpoint research identifies TECNO, the rising global smartphone brand that embodies this trend, incorporating camera technology, AI, scene recognition and more into a technologically advanced everyday product.
As smartphones become more affordable and accessible to the average South African, microinfluencers have popped up in all provinces, sharing their lives, their travels, and their adventures while safely enjoying a staycation, thanks to the high-quality feature photography made available by modern, affordable mobiles.

Counterpoint’s recent report also suggests that TECNO is recognised as one of the few brands that have made breakthroughs in AI-enhanced mobile photography and videography. TECNO’s excellent photographic performance also enabled the brand to earn distinctions in the Guinness World Records 2020 with the largest flipbook shot by its photography pioneer CAMON product line; and in IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) with the Camera Technology Innovation Smartphone Gold Award 2020. For landscape shooting, TECNO provides a unique magic pixel mode that enables lossless zooming and allows travellers to capture clear and sharp shots of buildings and mountains.

EXPERIENCE
5 Great reasons
to go camping on the #KZNSouthCoast With a chill now in the air, it’s time to shake off winter blues and #GoSouthKZN where visitors can enjoy the coastal paradise with its clear skies and sunny weather – no matter the season. But to experience the #ParadiseoftheZuluKingdom in a truly unique way, it’s well worth booking a camping trip at the seaside. “The KZN South Coast has a number of wonderful accommodation types, but our campsites remain some of our most popular, familyfriendly venues,” explains Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) CEO, Phelisa Mangcu. 58 1 | | September September2021 2021
“Many are located adjacent to the seaside, or with easy beach access, and they’re a well-maintained, affordable option for bringing families closer to each other, and closer to nature. A number of our campsites are also award-winning; showcasing
the elevated level of service provided our visitors.”
For those who haven’t yet braved the outdoors, here are five reasons to #GoSouthKZN for a camping trip: www.rovesa.co.za www.rovesa.co.za
EXPERIENCE
1: It’s budget-friendly
With the struggling economy, many are looking to make the rands and cents go further, which is where camping is a great option. Camping equipment can be borrowed or rented, and the cost of hiring a camping spot is substantially less than booking into any other venue. With the #KZNSouthCoast also encouraging visitors to #ExtendYourStay, there are many venues offering great discounts and special offers.
2: Connect with nature
Campfires under the stars, days spent exploring the rock pools and learning to surf…there’s something invigorating about time spent completely outdoors. Modern life means very few children actually get the chance to experience nature in such close proximity, so they’ll truly relish this unique experience. The #KZNSouthCoast in winter also gives visitors the chance to witness the #SardineRun and whale migrations, truly unique sightings of ocean activity. And, with five Blue Flag beaches, two internationallyrenowned dive sites, and the most tidal pools in the province, there is a lot to be explored on the coast!
3: Break from technology
While modern campsites do provide the option of charging electronics where needed, this is a great opportunity to disconnect from the devices and re-wire the mind through natural experiences. This provides families with a chance to actually get to know each other and create new memories.
4: Make lasting connections
Although campsites do provide a space for privacy, there’s a strong sense of community throughout the site, with youngsters meeting new people from all over, and making connections that can last a lifetime. After so much time spent in isolation, www.rovesa.co.za

5: A sense of appreciation
Spending time in the great outdoors, living a minimalist life, gives perspective on how little one needs and encourages appreciation for the little things. Sleeping in a tent, watching the sunrise over the ocean and roasting marshmallows over an open fire are all a great way to improve wellbeing, create a sense of calm and relaxation. Activities to try on the #KZNSouthCoast Besides beachside adventures,
the #ParadiseoftheZuluKingdom boasts a number of unique activities that are both family and budgetfriendly. The ‘Golf Coast’ has 11 golf courses alongside oceans and coastal forests; there is a green for every golfer. There are also numerous nature reserves and farmlands are great for trail hiking, running, 4x4 adventures and day visits. For a cultural experience, there’s the KwaXolo Caves Adventure which is a scenic hike to caves holding ancient San artwork, or the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre which is a facility showcasing the local history, cultural and creative activities of this region. Otherwise, visitors can get extreme with wild gorge swinging, ziplining, white water rafting and paintball.
COVID-19 safety protocols
Because of the many outdoor activities offered on the #KZNSouthCoast, visitors benefit from reduced COVID-19 risk at these open-air venues and sites. In addition to this, USCT has been communicating up-to-date COVID-19 information with all tourism establishments via the website’s dedicated COVID-19 portal, as well as the many social media platforms.
Explore KZN South Coast app
USCT has made visiting the #KZNSouthCoast simple with the launch of the free ‘Explore KZN South Coast’ app from Google Play and Apple stores. Once downloaded, visitors can easily plan the entire Easter holiday, from booking accommodation and finding local eateries to discovering specials and planning day trips. Visitors can also visit the website www.visitkznsouthcoast.co.za, or follow the ‘South Coast Tourism’ Facebook page or @infosouthcoast on Twitter. September 2021 | 59

Life hacks for luxury living Luxury is synonymous with a state of comfort or elegance and mostly comes with a hefty price tag, but it also means different things to different people. For some of us, luxuries are things we tend to deny ourselves because we have bills to pay. For others, it is splashing out on good coffee or takeaways, and for the elite few, it’s million-rand holiday homes and overseas trips. Rioma Cominelli, Director of First Loyalty Plus, says that with a few clever hacks, the regular man-on-the-street can afford luxuries. “While there are most definitely undeniable luxuries in life, luxury is subjective. I believe that living luxuriously lies in making the most of what is available to us. It sometimes requires a little bit of research, but it’ll be well worth the effort,” adds Rioma. She offers these life hacks for luxury living:
1. Dine at the right time: Meet
up over breakfast instead of lunch or dinner; meals are cheaper, and you are less likely to spend money on alcohol and dessert. Also, look out for deals from your local restaurants — some offer meals at better prices on certain days.
2. Visit movies on the cheaper days: South Africa’s leading
cinemas sell movie tickets at half 62 | September 2021
price on Tuesdays, but this discount is only available to people with a cinema club card. While some 3D movies are great for an immersive experience, they are generally more expensive and not worth the extra bucks.
3. Shop online: Not only is
shopping online currently favoured due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it also has amazing perks! Online shopping is more than just convenience — it saves you money too. Shopping online is also much quicker, plus, you save petrol because you needn’t leave the comfort of your couch. You also have the power to compare prices at the click of a button as opposed to visiting many shops. The bonus? Many online shops give first-time customers free shipping.
4. Sign up for newsletters:
Signing up for a newsletter sounds counterintuitive, but most retailers reward their customers for signing up to their ‘spam mail’ with exclusive discounts, special offers and even free gifts. Apart from the discount you receive when you sign up for the newsletter, many retailers use newsletters to share deals with those on their mailing list
first before sharing them on any other platforms.
5. Holiday out of season:
Imagine having a holiday resort all to yourself (for the most part) because fewer people are travelling during that time. Enjoying a vacation when no one else is travelling feels exclusive www.rovesa.co.za

and luxurious. The upside is that there is less demand, which means travel destinations offer lower prices. Booking your flight also tends to be cheaper during off-peak season.
6. Sign up for a loyalty programme: It’s no secret why
72% of South Africans are part of a www.rovesa.co.za
loyalty programme — they save you money, plus, you get exclusive deals! The First Loyalty Plus Rewards Programme offers consumers lifestyle benefits, with up to 50% discounts on meals, accommodation, spa treatments, movies, online shopping and much more. Signing up for a loyalty programme ultimately works in
your favour and allows you the best of what life has to offer at a better price. “Luxury can feel unattainable, but you get to define what luxury means to you. It does not have to be yachts and million-rand trips. It can also mean getting the best of what life has to offer at a great price,” concludes Rioma. September 2021 | 63

In addition to the flower-filled scenery, visitors can expect to spot a vast array of birdlife in the Berg River estuary, rated as one of the most important birding areas in the world. Be sure to visit the impressive Dutch Reformed Church while in town, and take a trip to McClear’s Beacon, a national monument situated on the farm Klipfontein which was used by the 18th Century French astronomer, Abby de la Caille, to measure the shape of the earth in the southern hemisphere. Also take a drive up the mountain in the Danielshoogte Private Reserve and experience spectacular views of the valley - on clear days, Table Mountain and St Helena Bay can be seen. Die Rooi Granaat Restaurant and the Koekeloer @ Koffiemoer Coffee Shop are highly recommended stopovers in Aurora for hungry travellers. Another 50km inland from Aurora will see flower-loving road-trippers finding their way to the town of Piketberg, which is nestled at the foot of the Piketberg Mountain range and surrounded by a tapestry of wheat fields, vineyards, fruit farms and indigenous fynbos bearing beautiful blooms in Spring. This historic village, which is named after the impressive mountain that it clings to, draws visitors looking to enjoy – amongst many other things – the rich history and architecture to be found here.
The best way to experience the heritage of this town, with its gorgeously restored cottages and the imposing neo-gothic style Dutch Reformed Church, is by doing the newly launched Piketberg Historic Route. Stops along the way, in addition to the church, include the Commercial Hotel, old Sheriff’s Office and original police station, the original bioscope, and the Piketberg Museum. In total the route has 12 points of interest and visitors can walk or drive to each at their leisure. Piketberg offers an array of accommodation options. Highly recommended are the Cornerstone Guest House, De Berge Guest House, Elfreda’s B&B, Hagenheim B&B, The Views Guest House and Vue de Montagne. Great selfcatering options include @1926, Home With A View, and Lemontree. For those looking to refuel whilst visiting Piketberg, be sure to pop in at Bravo Wine & Food which serves up a smorgasbord of sweet and savoury offerings. Just outside of town, along a scenic flower-strewn drive up the Kardoesie pass is the Kardoesie Restaurant and farm stall. Slightly further along is the Kloof Restaurant at the Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort. Last but certainly not least on the list of highly recommended towns to visit this spring is Porterville, a quaint village nestled on the slopes of the Olifant's River Mountains at the base of the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area – only 150km from Cape Town. Long known as the home of the rare Disa Uniflora
flower, as well as a paragliding and hang-gliding capital, this beautiful town is now fast making a name for itself amongst art and food enthusiasts, as well as those looking for a memorable escape from the city surrounded by exceptional natural beauty and country charm. Some of the top spring flower viewing spots in the mountains above Porterville are Beaverlac, Pampoenfontein and Berghoff – all of which also offer accommodation. Other recommended accommodation options on the mountain include Cedar Peak and Heidedal, and a visit to the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area is a must do – particularly in Spring! For those keen to explore the town itself (after getting their fill of the stunning scenery with its spring blooms) an art experience is highly recommended as Porterville is home to a large community of artists. Visit them in their studios to view and buy a wide range of art from ceramics to paintings and jewellery. “This is truly the perfect time to break away from the home bound restrictions we have all been under and get out to experience this year’s flower show – with reports indicating it is going to be a bumper year!” says Nomonde Ndlangisa, CEO of Bergrivier Tourism. “All of these towns within the Bergrivier region promise a great escape for the entire family, and gorgeous flowers to be viewed but without huge crowds, meaning visitors can keep to Covid distancing protocols as well.”

Passing the challenge – cycling through the Garden Route’s 14 passes In George, in the Garden Route, 20 people of all fitness levels, some of whom have not been on a bicycle since school, took on what could be considered their most ambitious challenge yet – three months of training culminating in touring through 14 passes, over 400km of some of the toughest terrain, in just nine days. Lockdown has been a long, difficult road for many. It has forced us to think about what makes life worth living, encouraged us to reconnect with friends and family and pushed us to rediscover the great outdoors. But how do you combine all these things?
A bicycle tour with friends
Gerhard and Sandra de Clercq came up with the idea of doing a bicycle tour with friends through the Garden Route. It would be a different sort of adventure – 10 married couples of all shapes and sizes, all in their fifties, many of them not having used a bicycle since their school days, and in no way interested in roughing it. The aim? To mix physical exercise with luxury and lots of fun. If anything, it would be interesting! The Garden Route was chosen due to its beautifully maintained mountain bike trails, making it an ideal place to explore with friends. The tour was based on the majestic mountain passes found all over this area, many of them built by Thomas Bain. 72 | September 2021

A circular route was picked – George to Oudtshoorn (80.61km) via the Montagu Pass, Oudtshoorn to Prince Albert (56.43km) via the Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert to De Rust and De Rust to Uniondale (76.76km) via Meiringspoort, Uniondale to Knysna (92.64km) via the Prince Albert Pass and Knysna back to George (94.48km) via the Seven Passes road. In total, 14 passes would be crossed. “The Southern Cape is one of the most beautiful parts of our country. It is safe and mostly unspoilt, with the most exciting cycling opportunities one can wish for. All these roads are accessible by car, just in case you need some extra help!” said Gerhard on their decision to travel through the Garden Route. To ensure that everyone in the group could participate in the tour, they made use of e-bikes. An e-bike is a bicycle that has a small electric motor powered by a battery to assist the rider when pedalling. As long as you have battery power left and you can still move your legs, you have a helping hand to assist you as you go.
Three months of training
For three months, the friends ate, drank and slept mountain biking, training whenever they could. Finally, on 27 March, the tour began. Some days were incredibly hard, with a lot of hill climbs, and the weather wasn’t always at its finest. The trip was an emotional one too – many had to dig deep and push themselves harder than ever before.

How family holidays benefit your kids Four ways that travelling as a family will have a massive impact on your children Whilst the idea of going on holiday with children can be somewhat daunting, the benefits of spending time together exploring a new destination far outweigh any niggling negatives. “In fact,” Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts, says, “holidaying as a family gives your children the opportunity to fill their lives with incredible new adventures. And, in addition to giving your kids the gift of making magical, lasting memories with the people they love, it also offers a wealth of benefits that will help shape who your kids will become as adults.” He adds that some of his own best childhood memories are of time spent away with his family. “Family holidays are valued by children, both in the moment and decades later too. I don’t remember what my parents gave me for my 13th birthday, but I can recall, with fondness, a trip we took to Cape Town. In a world where material items are so easily accumulated and tossed aside, there really is no greater gift you can give your children.”

LIFESTYLE
And studies confirm this; a research study conducted by the Family Holiday Association in the United Kingdom found that 49% of those surveyed said that their happiest memory was of their family vacation. The study also showed that one-third of the people still clearly remembered their vacations. Shaun shares four additional ways that travelling as a family will have a massive impact on your children:
1. Strengthens bonds
When you go on a family holiday, you leave all the worries of your everyday life behind. Away from the everyday distractions and long working hours, your family will be able to spend uninterrupted, quality time together. Even the simplest experiences such as a meal, can become a cherished memory that brings you closer together.
2. Every day is a learning experience
It’s a fact that kids absorb knowledge more effectively through experiential learning, so whether you’re exploring a museum, hiking up a mountain, fishing on the shoreline or visiting a nature reserve, travel brings education to life. This helps your child to be more open minded, adaptable to changing situations and flexible in their habits, providing hands-on problem-solving capabilities they will carry with them throughout life. Visiting new places and doing new things will also ignite your child’s imagination and will even encourage them to try new things and
www.rovesa.co.za
say ‘yes’ to new experiences (yes moms, even new foods!)
3. Making new friends
No matter where you are, kids will find other kids to play with. South Africa has 11 official languages and yet even when children meet someone they can’t converse with, it doesn’t matter because play is a universal language. All it takes is a smile and a laugh to break barriers. This intercultural communication will help your child build relationships with new friends. And, in a world that’s dominated by screens, these interpersonal life skills are invaluable as a child grows and develops their sense of self.
4. It teaches adaptability and responsibility
Breaking from routine can be a little scary for some mums, but it gives your child the opportunity to adapt to new surroundings and circumstances. Allow them to get involved in the decision making – from what restaurant to choose to what place to visit. If they are a little older, let them be the map navigator. If they are younger, get them to pack their own bags (it doesn’t have to be perfect). You will be teaching them invaluable skills that will stand them in good stead as they grow up. “You won’t ever get the ‘perfect trip’ with picture-perfect postcard memories, so don’t plan for perfection. Instead focus on making magical, lasting memories with your children that will unite you for the rest of your lives,” Shaun concludes.

STRAP LINE REVIEW
Finding a den in Stellenbosch By Di Sparks
At the tail end of a short business trip in Cape Town, I decided to extend my enjoyment of the Cape with a quick visit to Stellenbosch before heading home to Jo’burg. I had last visited the ‘City of Oaks’ about 20 years ago. The second oldest town in South Africa, Stellenbosch surrounded by vineyards, wine routes and wine estates, offers visitors natural beauty, breathtaking scenery, oak-shaded streets lined with cafes, top restaurants, boutiques, museums and art galleries, plenty of outdoor activities and a host of accommodation options from boutique hotels to self-catering apartments. As we favoured the self-catering option, we headed to the recommended The Den Apartments by Cape Summer Villas, in Dennesig street. Cape Summer Villas has four fully furnished apartments for short term rental (three studios and one twobedroomed apartment) of the 60 that make up The Den. The two76 | September 2021

I loved the sliding doors opening out onto a glass enclosed balcony with a built-in braai where we enjoyed the fabulous views of the mountains and what became a favourite spot of mine, the rooftop with its all-round view of the mountains – perfect for when you want to unwind after a day of being out and about.
A multitude of ‘must-do, mustsee’ places and activities
There is much to do in Stellenbosch. With only three days before flying back to Jo’burg, our time was limited and incorporating a multitude of
‘must-do, must-see’ places and activities proved to be quite a challenge. Our itinerary went something like this. Day 1: an early afternoon checkin at The Den, then a walk into the town to explore, grab a coffee and do a spot of shopping at the gorgeous shops – many of them selling South African products such as Desray for clothes, Tsonga for shoes, Masch for handbags and Mia Melange for homeware and accessories. We also browsed around De Warenmarkt, housed in an 18th Century building on the corner of Ryneveld and Plein streets. We stayed on to savour De Warenmarkt’s new set dinner menu; a delicious meal, paired with September 2021 | 77

excellent local wine (they have the longest wine list I’ve ever seen) that had us waddling, not walking back to The Den! And back at the apartment we indulged in a bit of Netflix before we drifted off into a deep sleep in the mega-comfortable bed made up in 100% pure cotton percale linen. Day 2: breakfast (croissants from Schoon) on the balcony – then onto Adventure Shop, a member of Cape Country Routes, which specialises in tours and activities with a taste of adventure, for a fourhour guided, historic bike tour. We cycled along winding small trails through oak and poplar forests, enjoyed a wine tasting at StarkConde wine estate, continued on to the beautiful Lanzerac wine estate where we indulged in a chocolate and wine pairing before heading back to Stellenbosch town centre via the University. Not having been on a bike in years it took a bit of teethgritting to find my biking ‘feet’ but with the help of the understanding guide, this was a 5-star highlight for me. We had a few ebikes that some in the group were lucky to be able to use and swap amongst their partners (with all COVID protocols being observed, of course). Then we drove to Boschendal for a relaxing picnic lunch which we’d pre-booked. We were starving after the morning’s exertions and 78 | September 2021
couldn’t wait to tuck into the filledto-the-brim picnic basket with healthy, wholesome and delicious food. Farm baked ciabatta, roast coronation cauliflower, crispy chickpeas, homemade Angus beef and onion pie (there is a vegetarian option – homemade aubergine and mushroom pie) cheeses and chocolate brownies, and what’s more we were even served wine – waiters in attendance - in the special area for picnics where special picnic chairs and blankets were laid down on our arrival. The perfect end to a very energetic morning – lazing under the shady trees on the beautiful pavilion lawn with the imposing mountain as a backdrop. We did a spot more shopping in the afternoon and also visited the Botanical Garden in the middle of town that has the biggest bonsai collection in Africa – very impressive and well worth a visit. the garden is only R10 per person. On our last day, we took an early meander along the Krom River and explored one of the many Jonkershoek Nature reserve trails. We made a last cappuccino in our room before check-out and then headed back to Cape Town International airport. Using The Den Apartments as our base for exploring Stellenbsoch was a good decision – it really is a perfect choice if you are looking for affordable, classy and upmarket self-catering accommodation with round-the-clock security and secure off-street undercover parking. Whether you want to enjoy being with each other or you want to try your hand at fly-fishing or go for a hike, the Drakensberg will ensure your honeymoon is an experience you’ll never forget.
2. Discover the South Coast

Cape Town is the picture-perfect end to your honeymoon road trip. How to fly cross-country with a newborn By Dr. Marguerite Barnard
So how do I take a flight with my newborn? I sat across the table from my paediatrician, nervous but naturally curious as to how we were going to make this work. My husband had business out of town and I had the opportunity for much needed extra 'hands on' with my parents who live in the Garden Route. My parents had graciously volunteered to help me out if I could make my way to them from Pretoria. When I got the go-ahead from the paediatrician to fly with my tiny two-week-old, it was time to start planning the big day. I’d done a lot of research about how to approach the flight, but ultimately nothing quite tops experience. Here are my suggestions on how to make flying with a newborn as pleasant as possible.
1. Choose a morning flight
Newborns are less fussy in the morning because they are rested, so 88 | September 2021
aim for a 10am flight. It's not peak time so you’ll also end up saving on the ticket cost. Because this flight is less popular you might find yourself with a less crowded plane and perhaps even an empty middle seat.
2. Enquire about your airline’s minimum age rules
Every airline is different and has different rules, including the minimum age of a passenger. For us the minimum age was two weeks – so we just made the cut. The last thing you want is to arrive at the airport and have a dispute with a flight attendant.
3. Document readiness
You won’t be able to board a plane without a valid and certified birth certificate. Needless to say you should apply for this at your hospital/
local authority in plenty of time as it takes time to finalise. Make at least 10 copies and have them certified to keep on file. Lastly, make sure you always carry one in your diaper bag.
4. Splurge on an airport lounge entry The calm music and relaxing environment of the premium airport lounges will help you and your newborn relax before you board your flight. Some bankcards offer complimentary entry, so find out if yours does and use it. The comfy couches are less crowded so you’ll have space to stretch out with your luggage. Baby changing facilities in the elite restrooms are also more spacious – you won’t struggle for a space to www.rovesa.co.za

create a changing station. It also gives you the opportunity to eat something as you’ll find little time for that during boarding and luggage collection.
straighter than yours and will become blocked much easier. I had no problem during the flight as a lt of strategic breastfeeding. I hope you’ll have the same success.
are checked in you should be left only with the pram, baby seat and diaper bag. Try to take as little as possible on to the plane with you. Use this transport system until you get to the flight doors, then simply fold everything up neatly and carry baby in arms to your seat.
8. Ditch the caffeine
You’re already nervous for the flight, so don’t add to the jitters with extra caffeine on board. Your baby can also sense your discomfort and react.
5. Aim for the window seat
The last thing you want is to be disturbed by a fellow traveller with a nervous bladder halfway through the flight. Especially if you just got your baby to settle down. The idea of squeezing from the middle seat with your baby on your lap seems like a nightmare. You’ll also be aiming to breastfeed so the window seat is more private.
6. Breastfeed during lift-off and landing This is probably the most important take-home message here. Have baby latched as soon as the aircraft starts moving and don’t stop until the seatbelt signs come off. Do the same with landing. Your baby’s Eustachian tube (the innermost part of the ear canal) is a lot smaller and
If you have been prescribed something calming that is safe to use while breastfeeding, you might want to take it the day you fly.
7. Use your car seat and pram
One of the few perks to flying with a baby is the extra baggage allowance. Moving around the airport can be a breeze with your baby seat mounted to your pram. However, moving the airport trolley and the pram is a challenge until you’ve checked in your big bags, but airport attendants are more than willing to offer a helping hand if you ask for it. Once your bags
In conclusion, taking a flight with a newborn is difficult but not impossible. These are hardresearched, tried-and-tested tips to make it easier. I’ve taken four flights with our newborn using these strategies and they were all successful. The feeling of relief when you can carry a sleeping baby from the flight door to arrivals makes it all worthwhile. Not to mention the excitement of finally reaching your holiday destination. * Disclosure: All opinions are my own. I‘m in no way endorsed by any brand. Hard lockdowns over the last year have seen fewer extended family gatherings, and as a result more and more families are considering going away together to make up for lost time. But some have yet to take the plunge.
Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts says that some parents find it tough to plan a trip with small children, let alone the added stress of travelling with their ageing parents too. He adds that whilst the idea may sound overwhelming, it’s well worth investigating and implementing. “Your folks will not be here forever and there is no better time to make magical, lasting memories with them. Plus, time with their grandparents is possibly one of the greatest gifts you can give your children! And, you will have additional pairs of hands to help.” Shaun offers some tips on how to ensure that your multi-generational holiday is stress-free and fabulous:
Choose the right destination: A resort is always a popular choice, and for good reason! It caters for the young and the not-so-young. It also caters for the active (think long, leisurely walks, lawn bowls and challenging hikes), and the not-so-active (think Bingo or lazing around the pool). Childcare is also available at most resorts which is an extra (and priceless) bonus. Choose the right type of accommodation: Depending on the age of
your children, self-catering may well be more convenient, as it offers more flexibility and space. If you are worried that your kids may drive your parents up the wall, you may want to consider a blended accommodation option, whereby your parents book into the main hotel, and you and the kids opt for self-catering at the same resort.
Choose the right mode of transport:
Rather than squashing into one smaller car, consider taking two vehicles (if this is a viable option), or hire one larger vehicle (one bigger car will use less fuel than two cars, and you’ll www.rovesa.co.za
save on toll fees, where applicable). It’s also a lot more fun to travel together, and what’s a road trip if you’re not travelling in the same car?
Plan for plenty of bathroom breaks:
Decide ahead of time where the designated “stretch-your-legs” stops are going to be. Be mindful that while some travellers may be able to go for hours without stopping, grandparents and smaller children will probably need to stop more often. Plan in advance as to when and where these breaks will happen, to avoid any anxiety before the holiday has even begun.
Plan meals: Most elderly people don't like surprises and uncertainty. Having a set routine and plan for meals let’s your parents predict and plan their day, which makes them feel safe and stable (same goes for smaller children). So, if you’re going the self-catering route, find out what equipment is provided, and then plan meals accordingly. Also, don’t be afraid to do a cooking roster. Let your parents share the load – they’ll love to help! Book everything in advance: While
“winging it” may work for some things, trying to last-minute-dot-com a multi-generational holiday is likely to cause unnecessary stress. Instead, rather plan everything ahead of time. This includes the booking of restaurants and activities. "Don’t regret the trips you didn’t take with your parents. All you’ll have left once they’re gone are the magical, lasting memories - so make them count and book that trip with them today!” Shaun concludes.

Aaldering Lodges
– a luxury escape
The five-star Luxury Lodges on the Aaldering wine estate are a must-visit for those who are after the finer things in life. The contrast between the black, ultramodern wine cellar and the classically white, thatched Cape Dutch style lodges is striking. The three lodges are equipped for the seasoned luxury traveller, and from their terraces you have sweeping views over the valley’s vineyards – obviously while enjoying a glass of Aaldering wine in serenity. If you stay at the Aaldering Lodges, it all starts with two black arches and three welcoming flags, fluttering in the wind. A dirt road takes you along vineyards, a small dam and cow-dotted fields to your travel destination. Spot a Giant Kingfisher on a branch, staring at the lake’s water surface. Then there is the impressive black building – a true eyecatcher in the distance – which comprises the cellar and tasting room, where you will be welcomed with a glass of wine. Later you will have a wine tasting with the winemaker. You are now amidst the Cape Winelands.
Spending the night on the wine estate
The Aaldering Lodges are very spacious, with 100m2 divided among your own lounge, bedroom, bathroom and terrace from which guests have never-ending views over the 26-metre-long infinity pool, the dam and the vineyards of Devon Valley. When the evening has settled in and the silence descends over the vineyards, it is time to enjoy a lavish dinner at one of the many stunning restaurants in Stellenbosch, just around the corner. Upon your return, you enjoy the most beautiful sunset from your terrace with one last glass of wine. Then it is time to make yourself comfortable and drift off in your cushion scattered king-size bed and sink-in duvet. Also, good to know: There is a pillow menu, an in-room spa treatment facility and a laundry service. Wake up well-rested to enjoy breakfast in the cosy tasting room or on the terrace overlooking the vineyards in the morning sun. We hope to welcome you one day in Stellenbosch for an unforgettable Aaldering experience!
With kind regards, Jacueline Aaldering

Sky Villa Hotel
luxury meets unparalleled vistas By Fiona Rossiter, Inspired Living SA
The Garden Route has always been one of my favourite local destinations. I have very fond memories of staying in Plettenberg Bay as a child. For some reason, however, I have not holidayed there much with my own family. A recent media trip to Sky Villa Boutique Hotel provided the perfect opportunity to get reacquainted with this picturesque coastal town. Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay (Plett), for me, is one of the most iconic holiday destinations in the Western Cape. Plett, situated on the Garden Route, in South Africa, is most famous for Robberg Peninsula’s sweeping golden beaches. 104 | September 2021
From the beautiful sea views, moderate climate and relaxed atmosphere to the majestic indigenous forests, Plett is a traveller’s paradise. With something to suit everyone, whether it is lazing on the sun kissed beaches, hiking in the Robberg Nature Reserve or
enjoying a marine safari with Offshore Adventures, you will be spoilt for choice. Not to forget, visiting the Plett Wine Route or eating out at one of the fantastic restaurants in the area.

of the Cape Summer Villas Group, www.rovesa.co.za
REVIEW has been on my list of ‘must-stay’ places for quite some time! From its perch in Baron Estate, the hotel boasts unparalleled, 360-degree views of the ocean and Keurbooms Lagoon. Not to forget the beautifully landscaped gardens, dotted with contemporary South African sculptures. When entering the opulent entrance hall, you cannot help but be mesmerised by the bold interiors and the sweeping staircase, which draw you in. There is a stylish sense of creativity throughout the hotel, with keen attention to detail. Elegant interiors are light and bright with flamboyant wallpaper, colourful upholstery and beautiful works of art. Aimed at the discerning traveller, Sky Villa seamlessly blends world-class luxury, with warm hospitality. Topnotch service is of utmost importance, and every effort is made to guarantee your comfort and wellbeing – even amidst a global pandemic!

The 14 stylishly decorated guest rooms are the epitome of contemporary elegance, offering top levels of both comfort and convenience. Well-appointed rooms each offer standard features such as air conditioning and heating, luxurious bathrobes, beach towels, a flat screen TV with Netflix and select DSTV channels, as well as a hairdryer. The coffee and tea station has a mini bar and a Nespresso coffee machine. Bathrooms kitted out with a heated towel rail, and complimentary toiletries, also have the fluffiest of towels. The mountain and sea facing rooms feature a kingsized bed and en-suite bathroom with a shower and underfloor heating. Private terraces open up to spectacular views of either the Langekloof Mountains or the ocean. I was fortunate enough to stay in a deluxe suite. My spacious en-suite room had the most comfortable king-sized bed, with dreamy, cotton percale linen. The view from my private terrace was breathtaking, and the perfect vantage point to take in the magical vista. The grand, sea-facing presidential and honeymoon suites feature an open-plan lounge area, with a fireplace. As well as a shower, the en-suite bathroom www.rovesa.co.za

Wining and dining a culinary experience to remember
Taking inspiration from their magnificent surroundings, the team of chefs at Sky Villa are constantly striving to create a culinary experience to remember. Dishes are crafted with a lightness of touch, as well as respect for ingredients and their source. Working closely with the hotel’s landscaping team, awardwinning suppliers and local farmers, each ingredient is selected for its seasonality, quality and flavour. One of the things I was really looking forward to on this trip was eating fantastic restaurant food! After spending so long in lockdown, I was super excited to be dining out again. The hotel also has an extensive range of local wines, as well as a selection of delicious cocktails. We were also treated to a lovely pizza and sushi lunch at sister property, The Bungalow on Hobie Beach.

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES
Beau Constantia Lucca 2017 The first impression is an intensely savoury offering accented by herbaceous flora, unwinding into the ripe, layered fruit that will mark wines from this vintage. Though still nervous and restrained, the vintage provided brilliant weight and concentration to effortlessly carry her 68% new oak profile. She’s dense, firm and focused in structure, with insane grip and our classic, wickedly fresh, cool climate acidity. Food pairing: Lucca's cool-climate derived bright acidity and medium body allows for the wine to pair beautifully with tomato-based dishes rich in herbs and spices such as traditional Ratatouille with red pepper coulis and Herbes de Provence.
Diemersfontein Pinotage 2019 On the nose, rich dark chocolate and powerful freshly brewed coffee styling, with a hint of mint and baked plums. The palate shows distinct characters of coffee and chocolate, which is balanced with smooth velvety tannins and a lingering aftertaste. Food pairing: Although this wine is a great partner to rich lamb casseroles and gentle Malay curries, the best companion for this wine is a rich, decadent chocolate dessert like molten chocolate lava cake or Chocolate Pecan brownie, absolute heaven!
Backsberg The Pumphouse Shiraz Produced from intensely concentrated Shiraz grapes, this wine exhibits a wonderful velvety depth. Black cherry and mulberry notes give way to hints of aniseed and vanilla, which are derived from maturation in small French -and just a few American - barriques. Food pairing: Pair with hearty stews and roasts.
KRONE Borealis Cuvée Brut, 2019 Kunjani Chenin Blanc 2020 A pale lemon colour with a slight green tinge presents itself in the glass. On the nose an array of fruit aromas develop as the wine is exposed to oxygen. Expect Golden Delicious apples, Forelle pears, tropical pineapple, white guava, yellow stone fruit and tart quince. The palate is dry with a medium acidity, low tannins, medium alcohol, and a pleasing full-flavoured intensity. There is an excellent follow through from the nose to the palate. The wine is youthful but generous and rich in style due to a large portion being fermented in oak, offering the best of both worlds – slight oak and richness, as well as bountiful fruit and freshness. Food pairing: Serve with Seared tuna, chicken korma or chicken liver parfait and toasted brioche with apple chutney.
110 | September 2021
Iridescent pale gold. Oyster shell and seabreeze aromatics on entry lead to bright green orchard ap-ples, white blossoms, lemon flesh and a treacle hit of salted caramel. The Borealis presents deft and athletic on the palate with a creamy, fine-textured mousse. Yellow apples, kumquat and naartjie evolve with a touch of lemon meringue framing an iodine core; taut and true to 2019’s growing conditions, the acid¬ity is firm and cleansing, revealing white ginger root on the finish. Food pairing: This flagship Cap Classique evokes a sense of discovery in dining – in a pure and simple way; such as mussels steamed open with seawater; with its distinct line of salinity, the Borealis elevates the oceanic. Minerals and earth; salt-baked; creamy por¬cini risotto. Simmering comforts of braising chicken, texture and spice.

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES
Black Elephant Vinters & Co Two Dogs a Peacock and a Horse Sauvignon Blanc 2021 The wine is translucent with a bright green hue. The nose is opulent with aromas of peach, passionfruit, pear and litchi. The palate is lively and concentrated with flavours of tropical fruits, gooseberry, creamy richness from the extended lees contact and lingering with fresh acidity and minerality. Food pairing: Pairs well with West Coast snoek on the braai.
Jan Harmsgat Pinotage 2020 Pinotage in a modern mode; a juicy mouthful of fragrant, ripe blackberries and blackcurrants with a whiff of oak spice an attractive extra. Enjoyable drinking now thanks to the sweet, succulent fruit, the variety’s dense, resonant though well-integrated tannins add welcome structure and some future potential.
Bonnievale Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 A classic and refined wine with intense, ripe red and blackberry flavours. Soft tannins underpin the beautiful integration between wood and fruit characters. Food pairing: Well served with game and red meats.
Rickety Bridge Chenin Blanc 2020 Inviting aromas of pineapple, guava and white peach with underlying floral and green fig notes. A full, rich palate of tropical fruit, citrus and spice leads into a long fresh honeyed finish. Food pairing: Sushi, shellfish, salads, Chinese cuisine, chicken dishes with a creamy sauce.
Food pairing: Serve with lamb chops, matured cheeses, red meats, stews or traditional potjiekos.
Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay 2018 The wine shows a light hay hue in colour and on the nose it reveals great aspects of citrus with some stone fruit and oak notes. Tangerine fruit and citrus blossom fragrances are apparent, with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes. The palate is an exciting combination of crisp citrus fruit with great complexity and concentration. The balanced, fresh acidity is natural, and adds focus to the wine. Food pairing: Fish, poultry, pork and game bird dishes work well with this wine. It works particularly well with creamy pastas and salmon dishes. The good acidity and balance between wood and fruit keeps the wine from being overly rich and consequently, great without food too. Mussel soup is a perfect match.
www.rovesa.co.za
Pas De Nom Creative Batch 2020 At first, the senses are met by confident aromas of citrus and clove, relieved by layers of ginger and lemongrass, and once given the opportunity to breathe, a savory complexity that awes. On the palate the Creative Batch possesses a certain amount of kinetic energy. It’s wonderful salinity is intensified by a concentration of citrus zest, and hints of beeswax ply well with the skin-born tannic grip and tangy finish. Food pairing: The fine tannin-acid synergy allows for insanely vibrant food pairings. Our favourites: Peking Duck with plum sauce in Mandarin pancakes topped with julienned scallions and cantaloupe, or a simple slice of sourdough with a thick layer of good orange marmalade.

Darling Cellars Old Bush Vines – Chenin Blanc
Black Elephant Vinters & Co Three Men in a Tub with a Rubber Duck
This wine displays a medium light straw hue in the glass with a green tinge and is made in a ripe tropical style; elegant on the one hand but serious and bold on the other. Tropical flavours of ripe yellow peaches, white pear, a touch of vanilla blossoms, toast, butterscotch, orange skin and pineapple meet you on the nose. This wine shows many layers as the Chenin Blanc opens up. Good structure and ripe fruit are well complimented by the wood and can definitely mature for another 10 years. Food pairing: Will pair excellently with spicy dishes such as Cape Malay curry or creamy dishes like seafood risotto. Suitable for Vegans.
Old world meets new in this blend of classic varietals. Small fruit parcels are sourced from various vineyard sites across the WesternCape region of the South Africa and seamlessly blends to create this playful red wine blend. The wine shows aromas of fresh picked red berries and vanilla. The palate is medium bodied with bright acidity and flavors of cherry, liquorice and violets.
Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir 2018
Food pairing: Pairs well with boerewors rolls.
The good acidity and balance between wood and fruit keeps the wine from being overly rich and consequently, great without food too. Food pairing: Mussel soup is a perfect match. Fish, poultry, pork and game bird dishes work well with this wine. It works particularly well with creamy pastas and salmon dishes. The natural acidity makes it a perfect partner with game fish, game birds and venison. Also great with grilled beef and strong, hard cheese. Vegan friendly.
Backsberg Sparkling Brut Carefully crafted from hand-picked Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, Backsberg’s expression of MCC exudes aromas of roasted chestnut, fresh hay and golden ripe apple. A delicate mousse on the palate gives way to a refreshing, zesty finish. Food paring: This MCC is an excellent wine to enjoy with seafood, starters and desserts.
Kunjani Cabernet Sauvignon The Kunjani Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 showcases a deep, dark garnet colour. Dark chocolates, mint and black currant hit the nose at first, followed by dried herbs, toasted oak and vanilla sweetness. The palate entry portrays a ripe tannin structure followed by layers of black currants, tobacco and dark chocolate. The wine shows good intensity and depth of flavour that can carry the oak component which becomes evident on the aftertaste. Food pairing: Serve with hearty, slow-cooked stews or a simple fillet with brandy & pepper cream, or truffle and mushroom sauce.

TRAVEL
Experiences, not possessions – new travel registry service launches in SA Travel-hungry South Africans can now save for their next holiday with a new travel-registry service. Research has shown that the majority of people – young and old – are choosing experiences over possessions; opting out of accumulating things and exploring experiences instead. On top of the list of experiences that people are saving for is travel, with studies revealing that as much as 65%of millennials are currently saving money to travel. In light of this, and good news for travel-hungry South Africans, is that an innovative new travel registry called Travel-It-Forward has been launched which allows people the chance to put money aside to afford their next holiday. The service also works as a gift-registry where others can contribute towards someone else’s adventure – perfect for a wedding where couples are not wanting household goods and appliances as gifts from their guests, and great for birthday, anniversary, engagement, graduation and Christmas gifts. “Travel-It-Forward is also a fantastic way for businesses to reward their staff – what better gift than the gift of
travel, and what better thanks than money towards a memorable travel experience?” asks Theresa Prins, the founder and owner of Travel-ItForward. “The service is basically a combination of a gift-registry meets an e-wallet and allows would-betravellers to save towards their own experience. It also allows them to request contributions into their travel wallet from friends and family – instead of purchasing a normal gift. “Many people are currently in a situation where they are travel-starved after months of lockdown but have reduced income. Travel-It-Forward allows you to dream and plan for your next trip without having to commit to the finer details right now,” she adds. Prins has partnered with a selection of some of the finest hotels and hospitality establishments in South Africa that travellers can book through their Travel-It-Forward wallet. Travel It Forward also offers a selection of adventures and experiences such as helicopter flips, wine trams, and double-decker bus tours to make your holiday that much more memorable. For every R1 000 spent, travellers get 3.5% back in credit which goes into their TravelIt-Forward wallet for their next adventure.
To get started, customers register nline to become a member of TravelIt-Forward and once registered, will be kept up-to-date on the latest deals, offerings, and news. Once registered you are also able to transact on the site. Prins explains there are three different transaction options. 1. Option 1 allows you to find the accommodation and experience that you want, add it to your cart and conclude your purchase. 2. Option 2 allows you to buy travel credits for someone else, or request others to buy credits for yourself, to go towards your holiday experience. 3. Option 3 allows you to go to the e-wallet facility and top up the account with how ever much money you want. This can be one lump sum, or a few smaller amounts over a period. Once you have accumulated enough money in your e-wallet, you can proceed to purchase the accommodation you want using the money in your e-wallet. “South Africa has so much to offer and some of the most incredible places to see and things to do. If there is one thing we learned over the past year, it is to appreciate what we have in our backyard and with Travel-It-Forward you can now start saving up for the holiday of your dreams,” says Prins.
