Happiness in life comes with being happy with ourselves. It starts by making each day productive. It starts by building meaningful relationships and friendships and it starts by doing something you love and something that allows you to give back to others. Happiness in life is fundamentally about being honest with yourself and with others. If you are honest with yourself, you will know your limitations and not seek to be something you cannot be. If you are honest with yourself then you will look for the career that will allow you to use your talents to help others. Not least of all, if you are honest with yourself, you will lead an upstanding life and never have to run from your past or live a lie. Happiness, really, is about personal integrity. Beyond all of that, happiness is derived from living a life worth remembering. It is about making a conscious effort to leave a positive legacy. That can be working with the disadvantaged in one’s community, or it can be volunteering to a number of charitable activities. Small contributions, made daily, add up to a lifetime body of work that can change the lives of others and set an example will strive to follow long into the future. Recognizing that there is satisfaction in service is integral to being happy with the responsibilities and obligations that come with fruitful citizenship. Born in Tehran, Iran, Nahal found herself passionate about fashion and design from a very young age. After moving to Canada, and continuing her academic education in fashion design, she started to develop her own brand, Nahal Baniadam, at the age of 21. Nahal is currently designing ready-towear collections both in Iran and Canada. Iranian heritage and her birthplace city, Tehran, are the fundamental sources of her inspiration. The juxtaposition of old Persian miniature art printed on her fabrics, with modern silhouette is her unique approach of materializing her observation of the current situation in Tehran. The asymmetrical cuts and unconventional pairing of fabrics, such as vinyl and cotton, is also Nahal’s portrayal Tehran’s mismatched urban architecture.

THE HISTORY OF

ounded by Sotirios Voulgaris in the year 1884, Bvlgari was born, an Italian luxury goods manufacturer. The name Bvlgari is derived from the founder s last name. The name is pronounced as Bulgari, this’s because the “V” in Latin alphabet is pronounced as “U’’.

Mr. Voulgaris was originally from Greece, while he was there, he acquired his unmatched knowledge of jeweler’s trade. He left Greece in 1877 in search of greener pastures before landing in Rome in the year 1881 where after three years he started his own company known as Bvlgari.

Mr. Voulgaris sons assisted him in opening the first shop known as Via Dei Condition in 1905 and soon it became famous and successful. Later on they joined the international market in 1970 in New York, Monte Carlo and later on in Geneva. Bulgaria's products now started gaining popularity even in hotel showrooms with their first venue being in Pierre Hotel in New York. Initially, Bulgaria was famous for its magnificent jewelry. Now the company has expanded its products to include watches, handbags, fragrances and hotels. Unbelievably, the first fragrance from Bulgaria was Eau Perfumer au Thé Vert in 1992.

Currently, Bvlgari has 54 perfume fragrances. Bvlgari fragrances were closely discovered and combined carefully in collaboration with famous perfumers as Annick Menardo, Jacques Cavallier, Alberto Morillas, Beatrice Piquet, Sophia Grojsman, Carlos Benaim, Olivier Polge, Sophie Labbe, Roche Andrier, Jean-Claude Ellena and Nathalie Lorson.

PINO POSTERARO Nebras talks to Pino, chef and founder of the Cioppino’s Mediterranean Grill & Enoteca

Who was the biggest inspirations for your career and how it inspires you? My mom. She taught me to respect the ingredient the way they are, this way food have their own character and taste the way they are. Today my philosophy for preparing food is “Respecting ingredient, keep it simple, clean and essential”. Where did you grow up and when did you know you wanted to be a chef? I grew up in Italy. “When I was studying to become a doctor, I worked summers in a restaurant,” explains Posteraro. “And every time people left the restaurant, they were smiling, because they were satisfied. When I was doing dialysis with patients, on the other hand, I saw how unhappy they were, and it was hard to watch them suffer. That’s when I realized that there was nothing more rewarding or energizing than working in [food service].” What is your favourite food memory? My favourite food memory is “Easter” when my mom was making nice dishes, such as baby goat with roasted potato.

What do you like to eat at home?

Are you the Chef at home?

I do very simple family dishes at home, anything with the sense of Mediterranean food to be share on the table. I don’t arrange the table the way I do in the restaurant. I like to cook a big roosted organic chicken or salmon with vegetable. Me and my family sit down around the table to enjoy the food.

I have 4 kids so my wife is busy. It’s easy and fast if I cook at home since I love cooking. For me cooking is not a job.

Are there any foods you just don’t like? Bad food …! Seriously I don’t like fast food. I never eat in the big chain Fast Food. You know those wraps which they all look natural? Wraps without sauce and flavour harm you the less with minimum damage. My kids enjoyed the fast food a lot when they were young and I was wondering as a chef what’s wrong with this image ….!? But now they have changed already. Which one is your favourite cookbook? Would like to write a cookbook yourself? My favourite cook book is “Ma Cuisine” written by Auguste Escoffier. I wrote a best seller book “Cioppino’s” in 2007 and it’s time to write another one. What do you do for fun except cooking?

Who in the food world do you most admire?

I learned how to enjoy physical activities, such as running.

Where is your favorite place in the world?

Favourite food to cook with? What ever the season will gives us. I make sure I always have extra olive oil. Do you have a favorite wine? I got one of the biggest wineries in the world which has 3,800 labels, 45,000 bottles. I prefer to drink white wine lightly when I am off at home, because is easier, especially in summer season. I also really love two grape varieties which is hard to cultivate. But when they cultivated right, they are amazing. So white wine at home and red wine over all.

I will be very bios, my favourite place is my little hometown called Lago which has around 2,500 people. The simplicity of the life style give me unrepeatable memories. What do you most love about your job? “Every day is never the same”. If you had just one wish, what would it be? It would be if I could bring some people back to life, I could also say my wish becomes true because I have many of my love ones around me.

What is your favorite cuisine to cook? Why? I love Indian, Persian, Arabic, Moroccan, generally love every cuisine. I can make good foods from different cultures and cuisines. Tell me something you would like to learn or improve upon. I would like to learn about life. Life is about learning about people, the way they are living and being respectful. When you reach these task then you will feel complete and satisfy. Based on what you hear in the industry, what do you think are the most respected and prestigious culinary school in the world that really make a difference to students who graduate from these schools? Locally VCC (Vancouver Community College), CIA (Culinary Institute of America), 2 or 3 French and Swiss School which are good and professional. For Vancouver, I believe VCC has the best Program. Is there a major difference in the industry between graduating from a prestigious culinary school and graduating from a collage with culinary program? The Collage and prestigious culinary schools are hand in hand and very close together. I find the collages which government funded are very fine schools, which have very good talented instructors who are part of culinary team for Canada. We can strongly claim that Collages and prestigious culinary Schools have the same value and standards.

Giuseppe (Pino) Posteraro was born in Lago, Italy March 22, 1964. At the age of twelve he came to Canada to visit his brother not realizing at the time that later in his life he would be making Canada his permanent home. After beginning training as a medical student, Pino changed track and decided to come to Canada to work for his brother in his restaurant. Pino later returned to Europe to study with Armando Zanetti, who became his mentor. Before returning to Canada he worked in several well known restaurants in Europe and Singapore. In 1999, Pino decided it was time to venture out on his own. He opened Cioppino’s Mediterranean Grill in Yaletown in September of that year, providing Vancouver with an outstanding ItalianMediterranean restaurant which has gained many awards for its food and wine. Year after year, it is classed as one of Vancouver’s top fine dining restaurants. 27

CURB APPEAL By Sina Tajbakhsh www.sinahomes.ca “Curb appeal”. You’ve probably heard that term used before. It refers to how valuable and enticing your house looks from the outside, typically from the perspective of a potential buyer “standing on the curb”. Many people focus on preparing the inside of their house for sale, and neglect preparing the outside. This is a mistake. Studies confirm that curb appeal has a huge influence over how quickly your house will sell, and for how much. How do you improve curb appeal?

You don’t need to do a major landscaping renovation! In fact, small improvements often make the biggest difference… improvements you can easily do over a weekend. Here are some suggestions: 1.

Clean the outside of front windows. Make them sparkle!

Prune shrubs and trim trees.

Remove grass, weeds and other unwanted growth between driveway and walkway stones. Re-sod bare spots on the lawn.

Edge the lawn. (A simple task that can have a dramatic visual impact)

Water the flowerbed. (Flowers look brighter and more healthy within one hour of watering) Sweep the walkway and driveway. Rake the leaves.

Remove signs such as “Beware of dog” and “No solicitations”. Check the welcome mat. If it’s worn or dirty, replace it.
