From the Editor:
FOLLOWING ON from yet another record-breaking ICE London, the organisers of the world’s largest and most recognisable gaming trade event have announced that for the first time ever, the ICE brand will be taken out of Europe and brought to… Africa! Based on the phenomenal success of ICE over the years, there is one thing that I can say with certainty - ICE knows how to put on a gaming event. ICE’s successful recipe lies in covering all aspects of gaming. From traditional gaming such as slots and tables to new innovations and technologies, ICE brings these all together with the right mix of buyers, operators and deal-makers to make it a not-to-be-missed event. Rounding it off with the best programme speakers, utmost professionalism and world-class training across all aspects of the gaming industry, the top-class recipe is complete. It is for all these reasons that Gaming for Africa and I are proud to be allied with Clarion Gaming, the organisers of ICE. To have ICE come to Africa on 24 - 25 October 2018 is no mean feat. While ICE Africa will by no means rival the size of ICE London, many of the successful ingredients from London will be part of an African show, which will maintain a unique African flavour for the continent’s requirements. As Africans, we need to recognise that ICE Africa will provide an opportunity for ALL in the gaming industry - not only a lucky few senior representatives from companies, regulatory bodies and associations - to be exposed to the latest products, training, information, knowledge-share, networking opportunities and expertise that will allow today’s junior and middle-level management to be the gaming leaders of tomorrow across the continent. A few major developments are in the pipeline for ICE Africa, and I will share this information as soon as it is available - but in the meantime, make sure you have registered your interest for the show at www.iceafrica.za.com - and diarise the date: 25 & 25 October, Johannesburg, South Africa See you there. Construction Starts on New R100m Eastern Cape Casino Work is underway on a new R100-million, world-class entertainment centre in Mthatha, which will create hundreds of temporary and permanent jobs and bolster the economy of the Eastern Cape’s third-largest city. The entertainment centre, which is being developed by South Africa’s largest blackowned property development company, Billion Group, will boast Mthatha’s first licensed casino as well as conferencing and childcare facilities, bars and restaurants. Having been in the pre-development phase for the past two years, the project will form the latest addition to Billion Group’s existing live-work-play precinct that already houses the 60,000m² BT Ngebs City Shopping Centre and the four-star Mayfair Hotel. It further continues Billion Group’s stated mission of bringing aspirational developments and world-class facilities and services to areas that would not otherwise have access to them. The group’s commercial director, Vuyokazi Njongwe, who was raised in Mthatha, said the development was “a continuation of our unwavering interest in the Eastern Cape, a province that has, for many years, been neglected. We think that it needs the same kind of infrastructure as the rest of the country,” she said. The company was awarded the casino licence in 2016. The planned 2,600m² facility – which will be called Mthatha Casino and Entertainment – is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, with more than 160 permanent jobs created on completion. “It’s a fact that for every job you create, you create three indirect jobs. We are very proud to be bringing employment to this part of the Eastern Cape,” said Dewald van Staden, development director at Billion Group.

“It is our intention to employ as many locals as possible, and to manage the process of employing workers across all three categories where possible: skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled.” He said a locally based main contractor had already been appointed. “Local small, medium and micro enterprises will benefit, such as security, laundry, building supplies, heavy plant and equipment hire. All of that will be sourced locally,” said Van Staden. He said that an additional formal skills development process was in place to begin at the operational stage. Njongwe said the casino and conferencing facility would create the premier entertainment node in Mthatha. “It will complement what we have done already with regard to the mall and the hotel. We are bringing world class facilities to Mthatha – something we pride ourselves on doing, and
something that we have a good track record on.” She added that while the development would undoubtedly have a positive effect on the local economy, it would also be a “revenue generator that will give a healthy injection into the fiscus while, of course, increasing the local GDP”. With earthworks already underway, the build of the top structure is set to begin shortly. The entertainment centre, estimated to cost in excess of R100-million, is scheduled to open its doors to the public towards the end of 2018.

represents a key vehicle to pull Africa together. Historically bigger operators tend to focus on events in Las Vegas and London but Clarion’s commitment to the country highlights that, over time, the African market warrants the same scale but with new growth opportunities too. The development potential in Africa is massive and this launch shows how much networking potential operators and international companies see in the market.” Discussing the reputation of Clarion’s London event, Kaatze continued: “We come to ICE London because the entire industry is under one roof and we’re not only able to see what’s available in the industry right now, but what’s available in the future too.” Echoing these factors, John Kamara, Director of Global Gaming Africa, explained: “First of all, according to the African Union, Africa is
full of brilliance and we want to say to operators to come with us as we walk with you into this emerging market. Having the ICE brand in Africa allows us to showcase the new opportunities in the market from rising growth potential to direct international investment and rising disposable income, the potential for operators is huge. “The continent represents almost 52 nations with 1.6billion people, 68% of whom are under the age of 27, this is such an exciting market and provides so many different opportunities across
the various countries. Africa is already renowned as an emerging market and according to recent data, the World Growth Bank is showing more growth ahead so what better time to launch this event.” Highlighting his decision to travel to ICE London, Kamara added: “ICE is where everything melts. It’s like a giant iceberg where everybody melts together into one pool of business and opportunity. We come here to sell the dream of Africa and ICE is the place to do this.”

We are joined by both Ricardo Coleman (Tables Manager) and Asser Majazu (Slots Manager). Give us a bit of a background on your position at AVANI Windhoek and the career path led him to this position? Ricardo Coleman - Windhoek: I got my start in the industry back in December 1994 with the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre. Kiron & Phumelela Sign African Television Deal Kiron Interactive and Phumelela Gaming have signed a deal to launch a fixed-odds betting television channel for Africa, a huge development for the future of racing on the continent. NOT ONLY will major events from across the continent be shown but meetings in the United Kingdom and Ireland will also be widely available throughout betting shops in Africa. The new television channel, appropriately named Racing World, will offer fixed odds on the biggest British and Irish racing events whilst also allowing punters to take advantage of Kiron’s virtual racing products. According to news outlets, the new Racing World channel has launched with Kings Sports in Uganda, but there are promising plans to extend the satellite’s reach into east and west Africa and beyond in the near future. Betting on this particular channel will be supplied via a white-label service or by a dedicated race book supplied in collaboration with UK-based bet platform A Bet A. The Press Association will be providing the feed direct to Racing World and plenty of punters will be familiar with that particular method of watching a major meeting. A PWC assessment found that South African sports betting saw an increase of 566% between 2008 and 2012. A greater opportunity to watch more of the biggest and most prestigious races in the industry will help to further enhance the horse racing scene in South Africa and the wider continent as a whole. The platform for racing markets to bounce back against the football betting sector, which is flourishing in sub-Saharan Africa, is exciting and technology is in place for Africans to enjoy similar coverage to that of British racing fans.
Jacob Monsthioa takes the Reins at North West Gambling Board… JACOB MONTSHIOA has been appointed as Acting CEO of the North West Gambling Board, following the departure of former CEO Fortune Sekgapane, whose tenure ended in January. Mr Sekgapane led the Board from 2008 - 2018, and was instrumental in leading the North West Gambling Board to many of its successes during this period. Mr Montshioa has been the NWGB’s Legal Manager since 2008, and will be focusing his efforts on Illegal Gambling and Transformation. “Illegal gambling continues to be an area of concern in the industry, and this is despite numerous efforts to curb it. We continue to work closely with police to clean up all illegal operations because they are a hindrance to our operations in promoting socio-economic growth and development. Over and above this we are regulating a sector which is largely untransformed where multi-nationals, continue to dominate in the space of ownership, management, control and procurement. The narrative is slowly but surely changing and one would realise that we are striving to afford new-entrants an opportunity to capitalise on the business opportunities created in the gambling industry.”
…As NWGB Bids Farewell to Fortune Sekgapane CEO of the North-West Gambling Board Mr Fortune Sekgapane has parted ways with the state entity. Mr Sekgaphane’s fixed term contract with the Board ended on the 14th of January 2018. This departure comes after ten years of loyal and excellent service at the helm of the North-West Gambling Board. Mr Sekgapane is credited for his meticulous leadership as Chief Executive Officer of the Board, having been instrumental in advocating for the creation of socio-economic opportunities for the less privileged, downtrodden and previously disadvantaged individuals. Mr Sekgapane’s leadership can also be attributed to shaping the gambling industry in the North West. And his contribution which spans over a decade as Chief Executive Officer saw him serve in various committees in the South African Development Community (SADC) region, the continent and internationally. 26 I Gaming For Africa I February / March 2018
The Future of Cryptocurrencies in Africa Cryptocurrency to most people and institutions in Africa is a big, and daunting word. By John Kamara, African Thought Leader IT SIGNALS change, and a lot of people in our very divided continent are not ready for the change cryptocurrencies will bring to our lives. But, the truth is that whether we are ready or not this change has come knocking at Africa’s door, and the continent has the opportunity to take charge of its own destiny. The question now is not about cryptocurrency but what we are going to do to harness the full power of this opportunity. Bitcoin became the first decentralised cryptocurrency in 2009. It is important to note that Bitcoin is just one form of cryptocurrency that is available to the world at the moment. There are over 100 cryptocurrencies (Litecoin, RXP, Clubcoin, Iota etc) that are trading for various values, and solving various problems all over the world. Africa is missing out on the game once more because we are trying to figure out how to keep what we already have, rather than think of how we can adopt these new solutions and also protect our consumers. Blockchain is another important concept that needs to be defined. Blockchain is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography. Each block typically
contains a hash pointer as a link to a previous block, a timestamp and transaction data. By design, blockchains are inherently resistant to modification of the data. In Africa, we have numerous problems of trade and movement of money because of the borders that were created by former colonial masters and which still guide our ability to trade or move money around today. According to Afrexim Bank and other international institutions for us to grow as a continent Africans must trade amongst themselves consistently. We must navigate the problems of movement of money and bring the unbanked people in our countries into an ecosystem that is easy, and accessible immediately. Blockchain technology can help us solve some of these problems by providing smart contracts; security data solutions and cryptocurrency. Over the past 12 months, the African market has seen the emergence of more than 15 Bitcoin exchanges seeking to provide cheap and efficient trading services to African consumers. Some exchanges have expanded their services and established offices in Africa. In East Africa, local innovators have introduced
cryptocurrency systems to support cross-border transactions. In South Africa, cryptocurrencies are becoming popular. In Nigeria, local traders and activists believe this new money presents an opportunity to democratise the economy. This is propelled by the fact that people in Nigeria have been failed by conventional money. The Central Bank of Nigeria, which oversees an inflation rate of 12-14 per cent, making it one of the highest inflation rates in the world, recently announced that it cannot stop Bitcoin. A statement from the bank reads: “Central bank cannot control or regulate bitcoin. Just the same way no-one is going to control or regulate the Internet. We don’t own it.” This is a very sensible, correct and forward-looking approach. The intangible nature of digital currencies means that a government cannot physically remove the wealth of a citizen. This paradigm shift is a monumental step forward in the social contract, providing an additional layer of security to individuals. For the first time, open minded early adopters, and innovators in Africa can change the game, and begin to create value for us in this continent.
New Leadership and Vision for Silverstar Almost two decades after her foray into the casino industry as an accountant, Anneke Potgieter has made the number one entertainment destination on West Rand her home as she steps into the role as Director of Operations and Complex General Manager at Silverstar. Rising up the ranks at Tsogo Sun This determined and focused woman – who is also a mother of two - has been a part of the Tsogo Sun staff for almost two decades having started her long service with the group as an accountant when what was then Champions Casino opened (now The Ridge Casino). She moved swiftly up the ranks and her CV boasts positions at many Tsogo Sun properties including: Financial Manager at Hemingways and Suncoast, where she was also promoted to Operations & Financial Manager. In November of 2015 Anneke moved back to Hemingways Casino in East London as Director of Operations and Complex General Manager. Just short of two years later the opportunity to head up the team at Silverstar came along. Anneke’ decision to grab the opportunity with both hands was an easy one and she is delighted to enjoy the sunshine on the Highveld after 16 years of coastal weather, while she brings her vision for Silverstar to life.
Mentoring and Management Style When asked if there is one person who has been instrumental in shaping her career she replies enthusiastically: “My GM at Suncoast is a remarkable man who taught me to always be true to myself in any situation, to remain professional but also be compassionate when in a difficult situation. His management style most certainly shaped mine.” 28 I Gaming For Africa I February / March 2018
Although it was an adjustment going from managing numbers to managing people, Anneke believes that numbers tell you a story about the business but it is important to look at the human behaviour which influences the numbers. This methodology ensures a holistic approach to business which is not weighted towards one or the other but paints a realistic picture of the areas in which your business is excelling and failing. Anneke’s philosophy in the workplace is fair and in some ways unique: “I don’t believe in people working in silos – whether you are management or a cleaner, it’s ‘our’ business and we run it together. A very good friend once offered me the following advice: Always apply good judgement, common sense and integrity.” So far this advice has worked for her as is evidenced by her stellar career.
Making her Mark in Casino Industry Although it is quite unusual for a woman to head up complex operations in the casino industry, Anneke feels it has been beneficial as she is by nature a nurturing leader who gives direction and builds confidence in her staff. When asked if she could offer a word of advice to young people considering a career in the casino industry, she mused: “The casino industry is so diverse so unless you are interested in becoming a dealer
or slots technician, you can work in IT or marketing or finance and still be a part of the casino industry.” Anneke has consistently practiced a particular philosophy throughout her career journey at Tsogo Sun: be the best at what you are doing and trust that you will be recognised. Her growth from Accountant to Director of Operations and Complex General Manager is proof of that.
Vision for Silverstar Anneke’s vision for Silverstar is to bring life to the property and she is dedicated to uplifting and empowering her team to make her strategy a reality: “It is a beautiful property which offers the best of the best to all our patrons. Tsogo Sun has invested a lot of money on equipping Silverstar to be the West Rand’s premier entertainment destination. My goal is to ensure the group sees a return on their investment. I would like to see families enjoying the magnificent outdoor area Silverstar offers as well as the food and beverage offering and our broad entertainment spectrum.” Follow Silverstar on Twitter @SilverstarZA or keep up to date with our news on Facebook @SilverstarZA #LoveSilverstar

Continued from page 20
Shaun Nicolson - AVANI Lesotho Hotel & Casino Gaming for Africa: Give us a bit of your background, and what led you to your position at AVANI Lesotho Hotel & Casino? Shaun Nicolson: I have been in the casino industry for over 25 years, working in casinos in Southern Africa and abroad. I have always been intrigued by the diversity of the operations, where there is always something to learn. I started as a Vault Cashier and worked my way through the ranks Gaming for Africa: What unique features sets AVANI Lesotho Hotel & Casino apart from the others? Shaun Nicolson: Definitely our staff, we have some of the best people I have worked with in the industry. We are a relatively small casino and that allows us to have a one on one relationship with our customers, and our staff literally do know your name. Gaming for Africa: Regarding guest demographics at the casino, where does the casino draw their customers from? Is the intent of the casino to be strictly for resort guests, or can the general public also use the casino?
Shaun Nicolson: Our core hotel business is derived from corporate guests so we are not pegged as a resort destination, as such the casino is open to everyone. Over 93% of our business is from the greater Lesotho region, however we actively market into South Africa, where we have seen an upturn of customers visits due to our VIP Manager’s strategies. Gaming for Africa: Are locals allowed to gamble, and are there responsible gambling programs in place? Shaun Nicolson: Lesotho, like South Africa, does not put any restrictions on residents gambling, as long as they are over 18 years and do so responsibly. We do have a responsible gaming programme in place within the casino. Gaming for Africa: How many table games and slots are available at the casino? Shaun Nicolson: Our games: 12 Tables - comprising Black Jack, Roulette and Punto Banco Table limits Roulette M 10.00 / M 25.00, Blackjack M 50.00 / M 200.00, Punto M 100 129 Lesotho and 70 Maseru =199 Machines Denominations range from 1c to M 5.00. Video, Stepper Reels and Poker with progressive jackpots. Machine games range from classic favourites to latest releases. Gaming for Africa: Are there tournaments within the casino? Shaun Nicolson: When we refer to tournaments, we generally refer to tables games. In this regard we host quarterly Roulette tournaments. Small scale gaming promotions are run 3 time a week. Large scale promotions are run every quarter for bigger wins. Gaming for Africa: What entertainment and activities are available complement the casino gaming operations? Shaun Nicolson: Our marketing team is constantly working on setting up entertainment, from comedy shows, ladies nights, specialised acts to romantic dinners. There is always something happening to cater for everyone’s tastes. Gaming for Africa: Is there a casino loyalty card that can be used across the properties? Shaun Nicolson: Yes – it is called the UNIQUE loyalty programme. It rewards our customers based on their play on the tables and slots. It is a point’s based system, where customers can redeem their points for anything from drinks, accommodation to merchandise. Gaming for Africa would like to thank Shaun Nicolson, Asser Majazu, Ricardo Coleman and the AVANI marketing team for their time and assistance.
