10. DESIGN RETRIEVAL In Lesson 9 we have learnt how to create a design and a design library. In Lesson 10 we will be learning how to retrieve designs from the design library and to design a logo for a company.

10.0 Objectives After going through this Lesson, you should be able to; •

Retrieve earlier created works and symbols.

•

Design and create a logo using Corel Draw.

•

Understand concepts for creating logos, Business Card, Labels.

10.1 Introduction We are living in the era of marketing and advertisements. Business process outsourcing has become a task of top most priority for almost all leading and even small business concerns. Almost all large multinational business corporations have their labels or brand names, which can be legally used for their products only, and also one can easily identify them by merely looking at their distinctive logos. A corporate or private business firm announces all their marketing and advertising activities by the name of their labels and logos. This environment brings forth a wide range of opportunities for the designing and development of these identification symbols or signs or emblems called as logos or labels respectively for the people in the field of drawing and designing. The advanced computer graphics and designing software, available nowadays, proves to be a boost for them. These softwares have inbuilt enriched libraries of various types of designs for logos and hundreds of styles for labels already installed in them. We can consult different directories in these libraries for inspiration and ideas for creating new and different styles of logos and labels. In the following lesson we will learn to retrieve the designs from the design libraries, and also to create logos of different and newer styles.

10.2 Design Retrieval Docker windows (Windows) and palettes display the same type of controls as a dialog box, such as command buttons, options, and list boxes. Unlike most dialog boxes, Docker windows / palettes can be kept open while working on a document, so that the commands can be readily accessed. To create a design with the help of dockers, with the Insert Character docker open and document page in view, locate a

symbol font by browsing through the font list. Many of the symbol fonts can be recognized by their category names. Once a font is selected, the preview area displays a partial list of the shapes included in the font. To copy a symbol to the document page, select the symbol, and then click the Insert button. The symbol can also be dragged from the docker into the drawing. It can be treated as any object and can be made bigger or smaller, filled with colour etc. The illustrations below have been made by using various characters displayed in the docker.

To make the above illustration, the rectangle tool, Graph paper tool, (Polygon tool) insert character, the text tool, and outline style selector were used.

10.3 Examples of Logo Designs 10.3.1 Using simple shapes and text to plan the Logo When planning a logo design for a business, the point to be kept in mind is that the creative designs usually feature a minimum of visual information. The emphasis should always be on conveying a clear message. Limiting the use of colours can help easily adapt the logo and match the colours in most layouts. Black is often the predominant design colour used, with additional colours serving as visual accents. Before beginning a design, it is wise to have a varied collection of text fonts on hand. Just as the symbols provide colour, style and tone, a well-chosen text font can enhance the design with character and personality. The examples dealt here will help to explore incorporating both symbol shapes and artistic text. Many of the symbol shapes were manipulated using shaping commands such as Trim and Weld, and by basic node editing with the Shape Tool. Tools such as the Interactive Fill, Interactive Blend, Interactive Drop Shadow, and Interactive Contour tools have been used in the design process. In many cases, the Corel DRAW PowerClip effects were used to package the shapes.

Self-check Questions 1. What are the points to remember while designing a logo? 2. What are Corel Draw Tools used in creating a logo or a Business Card? 3. Give some examples how lines can be manipulated to create designs.

10.3.2 Examples of Logo designs i)

The first example here is a not-so-original spoof of a popular corporate logo. A series of circular ellipses were used to create this simple two-colour logo for a candy company. Shapes from the Animals 1 symbol font (symbols 093 and 0100) form the design for the decorative center.

The circular effect for the text was created by applying artistic text to two separate ellipses (see below). The seahorse shape was not altered, but the outer contour of the shell shape was separated, and the unwanted portions were deleted.

4

ii)

Here is a logo design for a fictitious back-care clinic. It was based on the shape of a torso (symbol 033) from the Animals 1 symbol font.

5

Subtle node adjustments were made with the Shape Tool to make the figure appear more gender-neutral. The spinal vertebrae were created using two rectangles and a blend effect. The Trim command in Corel DRAW was used to eliminate the unwanted portions from the background and replace them with the symbol, as shown below. The Ellipse Tool was used to create the background.

iii)

This business card and logo represent an investment-counseling firm.Trees are often associated with growth, health, and prosperity. This shape is picked up from the Plants font (symbol 036). They were created from a rectangle that was sized to business card proportions (2 Ă— 3 inches) and intended for full ink bleeds on all four sides. The tree symbol was used to trim a section of the side and bottom of the rectangle, and a duplicate of the trimmed shape was ordered below to represent the tree shadow. Corel DRAW PowerClip effect was used to place two simple shapes representing the earth and sky into a rectangle.

Activity 1. Retrieve earlier Logo and symbol files and use it for creating a logo of your firm. 6

Remember the basic building blocks for logo design. Given below are some examples of logo designs created using Corel DRAW, a vector drawing program. The most basic tools have been used. They constitute simple shapes that make up graphic illustrations or logo designs. These examples demonstrate the usage of different lines in designing a logo.

Different lines can be used in logo design and for custom illustrations. Lines come in a variety of shapes and sizes. One can do the following: • • • • • • •

Vary the thickness of the lines Make lines of dots, dashes, or combinations Look at the patterns that a series of lines make Use lines to direct eyeflow Use lines to form barriers Use lines to indicate connections Use lines to show movement

The second ‘Ifiche’ logo design uses rounded line endings and more curves (in the fins/lashes). Notice that a different typeface is chosen for each, to match the style of lines. Interesting patterns can also be created with a series of repeating lines. None of these designs rely on colour, although changes in colour can further change the appearance of the lines.

7

The examples given below use different shapes in logo designs.

Basic shapes like circles, squares, triangles can be used to build logo designs. Everything has a shape but the basic shapes of circles, squares, and triangles can be very effective in logo design, in part because of their simplicity. Like lines the shapes also have certain sub-conscious meaning. •

The circle is protective or infinite

•

The square denotes stability, equality, and honesty.

•

The triangle suggests tension, conflict or action.

Several shapes can be grouped together to form interesting patterns. Deriving one shape from another is also possible such as, a group of circles that form a triangle. A triangle alone or a series of overlapping ones can point in one or more directions. Letters in a word or name can be replaced with shapes that suggest those letters like the letter E made of squares and a stacked of circles for the letter S or a pair of triangles (one up, one down) for the letter N. Logo designs need not be elaborate and usually work best when they are kept simple. One does not have to know how to draw to create some seemingly complex illustrations. The logo designs and graphics shown here use only lines, circles, squares, triangles, and text. In the above example a circle, a triangle, a square (the highlight), and a curvy line have been used to make a nice balloon. It has been repeated a few times, changing the colour and adding a triangular bow. It could be varied it even more by using an elongated ellipse for one or more of the balloons. A checkerboard of squares is a versatile pattern. It could be a tile floor, a racing flag, or a tablecloth as seen in the above illustration. Can you pick out the shapes used for the different utensils?

8

A simple shape (triangle) does more than just sit there. Can you tell what they represent in the above black and white logo design? The SpiroBendo logo design in the illustration is nothing more than a rectangle, some circles, and some very thick lines with round ends (filled rectangles with rounded corners could work too) that combine to look like a spiral notebook. Letters with a tail are fun. The tail on this Q (the circle) is a curvy line that does triple duty. It underscores the name, is the tail on the Q, and its curves suggest water, an obvious tie-in with the surf supply company.

10.5 Assignments 10.5.1 Class assignments i) Create a different logo using various characters and symbols from the dockers. 10.5.2 Home assignments i) Create a logo design or custom illustration with simple lines and shapes. The basis of many a logo design and graphic image are simple geometric shapes lines, circles, squares, and triangles.

10.6 Summing Up In this lesson we have learnt about dockers and their importance in various designs. Retrieving characters and symbols for using them in different designs have also been discussed. Designing a logo for a company using simple lines and shapes has also been demonstrated. Varying the attributes of these lines and shapes, different shades of meanings and messages can be conveyed. The following lesson will deal with some more artistic digital designs.

10.7 Possible answers to Self-check Questions 1. When planning a logo design for a businesss, one should remember that designs feature a minimum of visual information. Use simle shapes and Text to lan your Logo. The emphasis should always be on conveying a clear message. While matching colours, it should be taken care that black is often the predominant design colour used, with traditional colours serving as visual accents. As symbols provide colour, style and tone, a well chosen text font can enhance your design with character and personality. Collection of texts fonts shall be made before starting a design. 2. Various tools that are used for creating these use both symbols, shapes and artistic text. The insert Character options is used for inserting text and symbols Symbols shapes are manipulated using “Edit Symbols option and by using shaping commands such as Trim and Weld and shapee toll basic node editing is done. Various other effect tools such as the interactive fill, interactive blend, interactive Drop Shadow, and interactive contour tools are used in the design process.

3. Lines come in a variety of shapes and sizes. These can be used in various ways, like; Varying thickness of the lines. Make lines of dots, dashes, or combinations. Creating patterns by using series of lines. To direct eyeflow. To form barriers and connections. To show movement. One should remember what the shape of linescan convey eg. Sharp edges could indicate tension, crispness, hardness, formality, or high tech. Soft edges and curves may be softer, flowing, more casual, or omore personal and Changes in line thickness, endlings, or shape changes can alter the look and feel of a design.

10.8 Terminal Questions 1. What does a ‘Trim’ command in CorelDraw do? 2. Write a short note on ‘dockers’ and discuss their importance. 3. What is ‘Powerclip’ effect?
