introduzione introduction
Religion Today: continuano gli itinerari della spiritualità Riprende da Trento il formidabile percorso della spiritualità delle immagini, offerto dal Festival Internazionale di cinema delle religioni “Religion Today Filmfestival”. Anche quest'anno, la tredicesima edizione della rassegna guarda al territorio trentino non solo come laboratorio di dialogo, ma anche come sede di momenti di approfondimento scientifico sul tema delle religioni e della multiculturalità. In particolare, gli appuntamenti con gli storici del cinema e i professionisti dell'audiovisivo saranno l’occasione di formazione del pubblico al linguaggio delle immagini. Così come, la collaborazione tra Provincia autonoma di Trento e Festival permetterà di ospitare il Seminario internazionale su “Religioni e governance globale”, organizzato anche da Ministero Affari Esteri - Unità di Analisi e Programmazione ed ISPI (Istituto per gli studi di politica internazionale). La prestigiosa iniziativa prosegue il percorso di proposta e riflessione sul ruolo delle religioni nelle relazioni internazionali avviato nell'ottobre 2009 con il seminario su "Le religioni e la politica internazionale nell'era della globalizzazione". E proprio in tema di Politica Nobile e Ideali Europei, mi rallegra lo scorgere in catalogo la presenza di due belle produzioni trentine, di cui una - “La strada di De Gasperi”, a cura della Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino
- si presta ad un approfondimento del lato più umano e della religiosità dello statista. Religion Today si è proposto fin dall'inizio di essere un festival del cinema, ma un festival particolare e del tutto inedito, avendo come oggetto le religioni e il dialogo fra le religioni. In un mondo lacerato da conflitti con una forte radice confessionale, mi piace sostenere in Trentino, terra del Concilio, terra di religiosità solida e forte, un momento di incontro e di confronto profondi. Il Festival è una risorsa preziosa per la nostra comunità, perché è un momento di apertura verso nuove culture e nuove spiritualità di cui l’uomo moderno abbisogna. Ed allora ben venga che questi itinerari partano da Trento e attraversino le nostre valli, per toccare la Valsugana, Arco e la Valle dei Laghi. Infine voglio ringraziare tutto lo staff del Festival per il costante sostegno, che in questi anni ha permesso di consolidare il nostro progetto e aprire orizzonti di dialogo internazionale.

Religion Today: The Journeys of Spirituality continue The extraordinary path taken by the “Religion Today Film Festival”, the International Festival of the Cinema of Religions, exploring the spirituality of images, takes Trento as its starting point once more. Again this year, the thirteenth edition of the festival looks to the Trentino region not only as a workshop for dialogue, but also as a venue for moments of indepth study on the theme of religions and multiculturalism. In particular, the appointments with cinema experts and professionals from the audiovisual field will provide an opportunity to inform the public about the language of imagery. Moreover, the collaboration between the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Festival will enable it to host the International Seminar on “Religion and Global Governance”, organized with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - Unit of Analysis and Planning and ISPI (Institute for the study of international politics). The prestigious initiative continues along its journey with suggestions and reflections on the role of religions in international relations which began in October 2009 with the seminar on “Religions and international politics in the age of globalization”. And on this theme of Noble Politics and European Ideals, I am happy to see in the catalogue the presence of two works produced in Trentino, one of which - “La strada di De Gasperi”,
made by the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino - is dedicated to an indepth examination of the more human and religious side of the statesman. From its very beginnings Religion Today put itself forward as a festival of cinema, but a rather special one having as its theme that of religions and dialogue between religions. In a world torn apart by conflicts often rooted in religion, I would like to offer my support here in Trentino, land of the Council and of a strong and solid religiosity, a poignant moment of sharing and comparison. The Festival is a precious resource for our community since it is a moment of opening towards new cultures and new forms of spirituality which modern man is needy of. So let these itineraries set off from Trento and reach our valleys, stopping over in Valsugana, Arco and the Valle dei Laghi. To conclude, I would like to thank all of the staff of the Festival for the constant unstinting work, which over the years has enabled us to consolidate our project and open horizons of international dialogue.

Viaggi della fede. Viaggi della speranza
Tredici anni di storia e un programma importante per Religion Today Filmfestival, in programma nel periodo 8-21 ottobre 2010 fra Trento e provincia, Roma, Bolzano, Bassano e Nomadelfia, con un’anteprima a Teggiano Policastro (2 ottobre). Crescendo anno dopo anno, il festival continua la propria esplorazione del cinema delle religioni, indagandone i confini, le potenzialità, le trasformazioni. Sono la quantità e la qualità delle opere iscritte al concorso a testimoniare la vitalità di una produzione che affronta i vari punti di vista sull’esistenza e sul sacro sottesi dalle diverse religioni. Tra le opere selezionate, emerge inoltre un particolare impegno nell'approfondimento del tema religioso in relazione alla sfera sociale, con attenzione ai temi del disagio e della disabilità, alle esperienze di dialogo interreligioso, alle tensioni internazionali, alla necessità della pace. In questa cornice si colloca anche la fervida risposta alla proposta del tema dell’anno, “Viaggi della fede. Viaggi della speranza”. Nel mondo in cui tutti si spostano senza sosta, il viaggio ha perso gran parte del suo fascino romantico come scoperta e rischio, come radicale messa in questione di sé. E' il tempo dei viaggi d'affari e dei tour operators, in cui ogni dettaglio è ben pianificato, proporzionato ai nostri bisogni e al nostro potere di acquisto. Eppure c'è qualcuno che parte semplicemente perché non ha un posto dove vivere, una vita
da vivere. E qualcun altro che parte perché vorrebbe dare un significato diverso alla sua vita. Così la disperazione dei migranti e la fede dei pellegrini tracciano itinerari inediti, sorprendenti, che sarebbe sbagliato ridurre rispettivamente a un "problema" e a un fatto di "folklore", perché interrogano in profondità la coscienza umana e religiosa. Il tema proposto per Religion Today 2010 intende mettere in relazione queste modalità così diverse di viaggiare, l'una angosciosamente necessaria, l'altra apparentemente superflua. Ci può essere un dialogo tra chi parte spinto dalla fame e chi, spesso, da un senso di sazietà insoddisfatta? E cosa può dire il cinema al riguardo?

Journeys of Faith. Journeys of Hope
Thirteen years of history and an important programme for the Religion Today Film Festival, which takes place from 8-21 October 2010 in and around Trento, Rome, Bolzano, Bassano and Nomadelfia, with a preview in Teggiano Policastro (2 October). Year after year, the festival continues to explore the cinema of religions, investigating its confines, potential and transformations. The sheer quantity and quality of the works in competition bear witness to the value of productions who tackle the various view points on our existence and that which is sacred according to different religions. Among the films chosen, a particular emphasis emerges on a closer look at the religious theme in relation to society, with attention given to the themes of hardship and disability, the experiences of interreligious dialogue, international tensions, the need for peace. Within this framework there is also the heartfelt response to this year’s proposed theme, “Journeys of Faith. Journeys of Hope”. In today's world, where we are used to travelling without making stopovers, undertaking a journey has mostly lost its romantic appeal as a voyage of discovery with certain risks, a radical way of questioning oneself. Now is the age of
business trips and tour operator travel, in which every minute detail has been painstakingly planned, made to meet our needs and adapted to our buying power. Yet there are those who decide to get up and go simply because they no longer have a place to live, or a meaningful life to lead. Others set off on a journey in order to give a different meaning to their lives. The dispersion of migrants and the faith of pilgrims leave unexpected and surprising traces behind them, which it would be wrong to reduce to a "problem" or an aspect of "folklore" respectively, since they both raise profound questions about the human conscience and religious feeling. The theme proposed for Religion Today 2010 aims to examine these two very different ways of travelling - one based on extreme necessity, the other apparently superfluous. Can there be dialogue between those who set off on a journey due to hunger and others who very often leave because of a sense of dissatisfaction due to having had too much? What has cinema got to say on this subject?

Per Religion Today, festival itinerante ed ‘esplorazione delle differenze’, la dimensione del viaggio è da sempre fondamentale. Nata a Trento nel 1997, come espressione di un territorio che ha sempre creduto nel confronto tra fedi e culture, la prima rassegna di cinema delle religioni ha dentro di sé l'idea di un'identità in cammino, che affonda le proprie radici in una storia ben specifica, ma che proprio da questa storia è spinta a mettersi sul sentiero del cambiamento nel segno dell'incontro e di una società plurale. Operando su numerose sedi provinciali, regionali e nazionali, il festival intende anche offrire al pubblico più ampio la possibilità di accedere ad opere di qualità provenienti spesso da cinematografie lontane e poco conosciute, raramente fruibili in altri contesti. Anche quest’anno l’apertura dei lavori si terrà a TRENTO, dove saranno proiettati tutti i film in concorso e si riunirà la giuria internazionale e interreligiosa. Il programma trentino (8>16 ottobre) si aprirà con un incontro pubblico dedicato al tema dell’anno organizzato con il Centro Astalli – JRS Servizio dei Gesuiti per i Rifugiati in Italia. Nove giornate ininterrotte di proiezioni, incontri e attività per le scuole, estesi anche al territorio provinciale, permetteranno di mettere a fuoco il ruolo centrale che il linguaggio audiovisivo e i nuovi media hanno
assunto all’interno della società globalizzata, grazie anche alla proposta di un percorso laboratoriale di educazione all’immagine ad opera di esperti e professionisti dell’audiovisivo. Dopo la positiva esperienza del seminario internazionale organizzato a Trento nell'ottobre 2009, prosegue inoltre il percorso di proposta e riflessione sul ruolo delle religioni nelle relazioni internazionali nato dalla collaborazione fra Ministero Affari Esteri - Unità di Analisi e Programmazione, ISPI, Provincia autonoma di Trento e Religion Today Filmfestival. In programma l’approfondimento delle dinamiche tra “Religioni e governance globale” e l’interazione col cinema nella serata di mercoledì 13 ottobre. Per un coinvolgimento sempre più attivo della popolazione della città e delle valli trentine, nelle settimane precedenti il Festival saranno riunite giurie popolari e di tecnici (interreligiosa, di giornalisti, giovani, donne ecc.) che nella cerimonia in programma per la serata di sabato 16 ottobre consegneranno ai vincitori i premi speciali del Festival.

Around and about with Religion Today
For Religion Today, an itinerant festival and ‘exploration of our differences’, the significance of journeys has always been fundamental. The festival which began in Trento in 1997, as an expression of a land which has always encouraged comparison between religions and cultures, it the first festival of religions and embodies the idea of a developing identity rooted in a specific past, but which precisely due to this past is forced to follow the path of change to meet people halfway in this pluralist society. Working at various levels from provincial to regional and national level, the festival aims to offer the public at large the chance to see works of quality from faraway cinema producers hitherto unknown and rarely accessible in other contexts. This year the festival will begin in TRENTO, where all the films in competition will be screened and which will play host to the international and inter-religious jury. The Trentino programme (8>16 October) will open with a public meeting on the theme of the year organized with the Centro Astalli – JRS, a Jesuit service for refugees in Italy. Nine days of continuous screenings, meetings and activities for schools extended to the whole province, which allow us to focus on the pivotal role played by the audiovisual language and new forms of
media in this globalized society, thanks to the proposal of workshops on visual education run by experts and professionals in the audiovisual field. After the positive experience of the international seminar organized in Trento in October 2009 there will be further reflection on the role of religions in international affairs which came about as a result of a collaboration between the Italian Foreign Office - Unit of Analysis and Planning, ISPI, the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Religion Today Film Festival. An in-depth seminar on the dynamics between “Religions and Global Governance” and their interaction with cinema in the evening of Wednesday 13 October. In order to involve the local population even more in the festival, over the weeks reading up to the festival juries made up of local people and experts will meet (an inter-religious jury, one of journalists, young people, women, etc.) who will award the special prizes to the winning films during the evening of Saturday 16 October.

Allo strumento delle giurie speciali come occasione di coinvolgimento e partecipazione faranno ricorso anche le sedi di NOMADELFIA (21 ottobre) e BOLZANO/ BOZEN (12>13 ottobre) con particolare riguardo ai giovani e alle scuole. I gruppi familiari della comunità grossetana fondata da don Zeno Santini attribuiranno il premio “Fraternità”, mentre il capoluogo altoatesino, città dalla forte dimensione multilingue e multiculturale nel cuore d’Europa, vedrà la nuova collaborazione tra il Teatro Cristallo, dove i film del Festival sono proposti con sottotitolatura e/o voice over in italiano e tedesco, e le classi dell’Istituto Salesiani Don Bosco Rainerum, che nell’approccio ai film porteranno il loro modo di percepire la realtà e le loro speranze per un mondo dove comunicare significhi anche comprendersi. Alla sede di BASSANO (11 ottobre), presso il centro di spiritualità ignaziana di Villa San Giuseppe, si aggiungerà per la prima volta la diocesi di TEGGIANO POLICASTRO in provincia di Salerno. L’anteprima (2 ottobre), si inserisce nel percorso continuativo di incontro e scambio iniziato nell’estate 2008 con la vicina comunità di Sant’Angelo a Fasanella, secondo una progettualità “in cammino” in linea con la storia e gli intenti di Religion Today.
Anche quest’anno ROMA ospiterà l’esperienza, ormai consolidata, del “Laboratorio di Convivenza” tra registi, direttori di festival, critici cinematografici, produttori e distributori provenienti da diverse culture e religioni (18-20 ottobre). Gli ospiti internazionali potranno condividere le giornate del workshop con momenti di riflessione, tempi di preghiera – ognuno nella propria fede – e incontri informali orientati a favorire i contatti e lo scambio nello spirito di una “convivialità delle differenze”. Nel corso della tre giorni sarà rinnovata la collaborazione con la Facoltà di Scienze della Comunicazione Sociale della Università Pontificia Salesiana per l’organizzazione di una intera giornata di studi che contribuirà ad approfondire il tema dell’anno in una prospettiva interreligiosa. Una giuria di studenti assegnerà un premio che metterà in risalto gli assi portanti delle attività di Facoltà: i giovani e la comunicazione. E il viaggio continua. Da qualche anno, infatti, Religion Today è anche centro di cultura attivo tutto l’anno per organizzare eventi e scambi con altri festival internazionali, da Gerusalemme a Dhaka Bangladesh, e per mettere a disposizione di scuole, enti e associazioni un archivio ricco di oltre 1200 titoli provenienti dai cinque continenti.

Both NOMADELFIA (21 October) and BOLZANO/BOZEN (12>13 October) will open themselves to the special juries a san opportunità for the involvement and participation especially of young people and schools. The family groups of the community in the Grossetto province founded by don Zeno Santini will award the “Fraternity” prize, while the capital of the South Tyrol, a city famed for its multilingual and multicultural character in the heart of Europe, will see a new collaboration between the Teatro Cristallo, where the Festival’s films are offered with subtitles and/or voice-over in Italian and German, and the classes of the Istituto Salesiani Don Bosco Rainerum, who will bring their way of understanding reality in their approach to the films alongside their hopes for a world where communica-tion means mutual understanding. In BASSANO (11 October), alongside the centre of Ignatian spirituality of Villa San Giuseppe, for the first time the diocese of TEGGIANO POLICASTRO in the province of Salerno will take part in the Festival. The preview of films (2 October) is part of the continuing collaboration, which began in the summer of 2008, with the nearby community of Sant’Angelo a Fasanella, as part of an ongoing project of development in line with the history and intentions of Religion Today.
This year again ROME will host the now consolidated experience of the “Living Workshop” between filmmakers, festival directors, cinema critics, producers and distributors from different cultures and religions (18-20 October). The international guests will be able to spend their days at the workshop in moments of reflection, time for prayer - everyone according to their own faith - and informal meetings aimed at encouraging them to make new contacts and share experiences in the spirit of a “celebrating our differences”. In the course of the three days the collaboration with the Facoltà of Media Studies of the Università Pontificia Salesiana will be renewed to organze a one-day study seminar which will contribute to analysing the theme of the year from an inter-religious point of view. A jury of students will award the prize which highlights the main activities of the Faculty: young people and communication. And the journey continues. For some years now, Religion Today has been a cultural centre active all year round organizing events and exchanges with other international festivals, from Jerusalem to Dhaka Bangladesh, and making available its archive full of over 1200 films from 5 continents to schools, associations and other organizations.

In 1998 the book Zen at War elaborately described how Buddhist monks actively participated in the wars waged by Japan in the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the initiative of a Dutch woman, Ina Buitendijk, whose husband suffered from his internment in a Japanese camp, in this film a number of Buddhist Zen monks in Japan talk about their predecessors’ collaboration for the first time.
