the art of adaptation chapter 2: cities & desire
FEDORA In Fedora, there exists two contrasting parts in the city: a lone metal building standing in the heart of the city and the gray stone metropolis that surrounds it. Inside the metal building are rooms, and each of these rooms contain a crystal globe.
“…but while he constructed his miniature model, Fedora was no longer the same as before, and what had been until yesterday a possible future became only a toy in a glass globe.”
“The one contains what is accepted as necessary when it is not yet so; the others, what is imagined as possible and, a moment later, is possible no longer.” talks about the fickleness of reality and of time how something can pass by as quickly as someone made a decision for it how something can be futile because of a decision
“The building with the globes is now Fedora’s museum: every inhabitant visits it,…” hopefully sometime in the future these situations coincide, intersect and the ideal Fedora can be created

FEDORA Each of these crystal globes contain a version of Fedora that has been thought to be ideal for its current Fedora. However, as time passes on mercilessly while the people work on the concept and plan of an ideal Fedora, the reality changes. The gray stone metropolis has evolved into a different version. Their hopes and dreams are now futile, as they are dreamed for the past.

FEDORA The gray stone metropolis can be said to represent the reality of life, where sometimes things get a little uncontrollable and unpredictable. But what is life without hopes and dreams? These exists in the form of crystal globes, contained in the metal building that has been built in the middle of Fedora, a sort of reminder to the people perhaps: to never lose hope. One day, a version of the ideal city that exists in only little spheres, might coincide with the real version of Fedora.

MIND MAP
MIND MAP
CONCEPT Fedora: a city that shows the harshness of reality and the fragility of dreams but at the same time surrounded by hope
The artwork shows the connection between the people of Fedora, its reality and their dreams.
The strings are the desires of the people, where its enticing form created by the rhythm causes the people to overlook the reality they are set in (the frame).
A few outliers in the strings represent the fragmented community of Fedora, as they get caught up in their dream of an ideal city.
The dynamic look of the flat part of the frame proposes a ever-changing reality, which is often overlooked in Fedora.
The whole is linked together in a way where the twisting form of the strings allow the viewer to imagine their continuation of the twisting action, until a single point is formed in the middle, an intersection point where the desires coincide with the reality. The point will represent the day where an ideal version of Fedora fits with its reality.
observing the everyday jalan nagasari
Jalan Nagasari Located at the busy and lively Bukit Bintang, one of the main attraction of Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Nagasari is one of the streets that is often overlooked as it is only home to a few restaurants, cafes, hotels and office tower compared to the other bustling streets of Bukit Bintang. This inspires us to look more into the site for its similarity with Fedora.
OVERLOOKED
The clear difference of the condition of the two different type of buildings here creates an emphasis on the metal structure at the background. As people look towards the building, the tall, regal tower slowly becomes the desired form of the surrounding dilapidated buildings as it gets built day by day. When people dream, they tend to overlook their surroundings and the reality they are in even when the reality is what they should focus on, just like in the photograph.
FRAGMENTED
At Jalan Nagasari, the buildings change rapidly with time: whether it is its owner, function, faรงade or even its form. The one thing that remain constant is the trees on the site, as it grows on its own without fail. The trees live their own story without being influenced by the occupancy of the buildings, forming an image of them being disconnected from the surrounding, while the abundance of them creates an almost fragmented scenery.
LINKED
The lone telephone pole on the sidewalk connects all the surrounding buildings together, no matter their differences. The linkage shows that a common point can be found in all things. The common point can be thought to be the start of unity of a community as differences are let aside. Only when this connection is established can a community achieve their desires.
