PRIVATE ISLAND GETAWAY Eagle Island, located minutes off the coast of Darien, Georgia provides an escape from the mundane and routine.

H

ow many times have you wanted to simply get away from it all? Count all those moments when you just craved some alone time with nature, a piece of calm, a drizzle of serenity.

and team will get a crab boil or oyster bake going upon request

Well, your prayers have been answered. We found at least one spot where you could experience all of that – at Eagle Island, off the coast of Darien, Georgia.

Once deposited on the island, you are on your own. Access to the mainland is possible only by boat - yours or organized with the hospitality team there. Kayaks are available for a fun ride down the coastline and birding is a common activity here with eagles and other local wildlife easy to spy when it’s the right season.

One of eight private islands along the coast available for vacation rental, Eagle Island is a 10-acre sanctuary accessible only by boat, captained by owner Andy Hill. He will personally greet you at Darien where you park and transfer your belongings.

There is plenty to do on the island to keep you and your party occupied. All the amenities you could desire during your stay are made available – direct TV, wireless Internet, arrangements for fishing and crabbing.

Barely 10-15 minutes later, you are docking at the pier, walking up a wooden pathway to enter the island and follow the paved road that heads to the lodge.

If hanging out on the lodge or island gets a tad bit boring, organize an excursion to nearby Sapelo Island and trace a path of centuries-old heritage that meticulously captures America’s native settlers, Spanish missions, plantations and the mill era. Head to the beach – one of the few that are rarely visited and offer endless miles of sand and water sans the usual crowds.

Any ideas of rustic, island life pretty much end about there though. The lodge is a home away from home – two bedrooms with a luxurious living/dining space, a cozy spiral staircase leading to a loft and a campy large room out back with bunk beds and a game room feel – large enough to accommodate a party of 12. The wrap around porch with everything from hammock and swing bed to breakfast table and outdoor hot tub with fireplace is the thing of dreams. An outdoor shower certainly adds to the island vibe as well as a backyard prep area where captain Andy

You will also notice reclaimed and recycled materials all around the lodge and walkway – Captain Andy is an environmentalist and salvages treasures from his surroundings, using them for everything from outdoor plant holders to indoor décor and fixtures. Architectural twists abound and you can request a tour to learn more about the design history of the lodge.

o matter how you choose to spend your time here, this is an island getaway you will want to come back to very soon. Whether cooking up a storm in the outdoor kitchen area, writing a book or enjoying the serene bobbing of kayaks on the water, Eagle Island holds a special place in the hearts of visitors with many coming back for another dose of island living redefined. Indulge in the bounty of nature with locally caught blue crab, shrimp, oysters and more. Absorb the fresh air on a little sanctuary untouched by anything but what the owner has chosen to put there for your comfort and convenience. Truly enjoy time with your companions without having to consult a what to do, where to go guide on local attractions. Your undivided attention is targeted at one thing and one thing only - living on private island time!

TASTE TEST: SPOTLIGHT Aroha New Zealand Cuisine and Bar With Los Angeles being the melting pot that it is, it wouldn’t be a surprise that one of only a handful of restaurants specializing in New Zealand cuisine would be located here! Award-winning Chef Gwithyen Thomas brings the flavors of a faraway land within reach for locals, and does a tremendously fantastic job of it. Their menu features predominantly organic local produce (passion fruit, feijoa, and herbs are grown on the back patio!), free-range and grass-fed organic meats are primarily from NZ, and fresh seafood is flown in less than 48 hours out of the water. Dishes are seasoned with native NZ plants including horopito and kawakawa. Established in late 2014, Aroha, meaning love and compassion in Maori, offers dinner and brunch menus, with allergy friendly options taken into consideration. Check in for some fresh NZ Green Lipped Mussels in curry coconut broth, Horopito Crusted NZ Cervena Venison, Elk Rack with pickled blackberry or NZ Hapuka/ Bluenose. And do not leave without savoring the national dessert of Pavlova or the Implosion cupcake! Better yet, opt for one of two five-course degustation menus that focus on NZ seafood and NZ meats for a chef’s special of signature dishes that will put you front and center of Kiwi cuisine.

RESTAURANT ROUNDUP Some of our favorite local spots to dine at this month: TASTE ON MELROSE A casually elegant setting for farmer's market-influenced contemporary American comfort food in West Hollywood, don’t be fooled by the space you see from the outside when you enter. They have a lovely extended area outback including a cozy courtyard you will want to lounge in for the best of your visit. CHURCH AND STATE Rustic-chic bistro serves house-made charcuterie and other French classics (pictured above), plus creative cocktails in the heart of the Arts District. Recommendations include Steak Frites, Escargot, Roasted Marrow Bone, House-made Charcuterie, Moules Frites, Steak Tartare, Tarte Flambée by Chef Tony Esnault. OCEAN PRIME BEVERLY HILLS BEAUTY AND ESSEX A sophisticated, jewel-toned eatery with vintage decor offering New American plates, drinks and wine in the heart of Hollywood. Entrance is through an alley way and working pawn shop so don’t be surprised when you walk in! Chef Santos’ signature multi-ethnic dishes included Grilled Cheese and Tomato Dumplings (pictured above). HYPERION PUBLIC Country-chic dining room with elevated American comfort food and an ornate, attached cocktail bar in Studio City. All beef is certified humane and is antibiotic and hormones free. Chicken and turkey is cage free, natural and California raised. All seafood is wild caught and they do offer more gluten free options than those listed on their menu.

11

Just steps from Rodeo Drive, this location is great for business and pleasure. PLUS in celebration of National Carrot Cake Day (February 3) they have partnered with No Kid Hungry to help support ending childhood hunger by donating $1 from every slice of the signature Ten Layer Carrot Cake sold February 3rd to February 9th!

These and several other L.A. area restaurants are participating in the current dineL.A. Series, which is celebrating 10 years of the event with two weeks of memorable eats. There will be a summer edition later this year. Check them out for great prix fixe deals or visit them any time.

DESIGN DISTRICT : MUSEUM MINDED While Los Angeles has the Museum Row on Miracle Mile and there are some excellent museum options along that stretch, there are a few gems in other L.A. area and vicinity neighborhoods that should be on your radar too. Many have free visit days and hours that are a great avenue to visit a museum you might not have otherwise heard much about. Some of these museums are also participating in the annual Museum Day scheduled for January 28 this year. Take a peek!

MARCIANO ART FOUNDATION A new contemporary art space in the heart of Los Angeles founded by Maurice and Paul Marciano, showing works from collections by well-established, mid-career and emerging artists, predominantly from the 1990s to present. Admission is always free of charge but online RSVP is required and timed entry is followed. The museum (pictured above) is located on Wilshire Blvd in the Windsor Square neighborhood and pretty difficult to miss

as it is housed in a 100,000 sq.ft. building that was originally a Scottish Rite Masonic Temple. Another plus is plenty of parking and a cafĂŠ onsite. The museum is currently closed for new exhibit installation but reopens March 1 with two new displays. raveling to most parts of Scandinavia is easy and more so to Stockholm, which is a well-connected country with multiple flights from main airports around the world. Within Stockholm itself, public transportation is found in plenty, and walking and biking are common. Waterways are well used as well and if you do get lost finding your way around, seeking directions isn’t difficult as everyone speaks English. The hop-on hopoff buses are convenient for heading to the main attraction areas - the Stockholm pass provides a discounted rate and easy access. While walking around, take time out for Fika – coffee and pastry – found everywhere for sometimes as little as 5 Euros. Eating on the go is pretty common too – grab a small sandwich for a quick light bite. But if it’s an authentic dinner experience you want, Aifur Krog and

Bar is the spot. Located in Gamla Stan (old town), the interiors are decorated to resemble an old Viking castle with throws and furs around. Dining is at a communal table with wide chairs and benches. Local delicacies such as mead (sweet wine) and lingonberries are served here as well as meat trays featuring reindeer, deer, moose and other favored local meats. The Skansen open air museum on the island of Djurgarden is a huge draw for families. The oldest open-air museum in the world, it is a large park with attractions from replicas of homes to a zoo to live performances. A boat tour is a good option to hear the city’s history while enjoying the waters of Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. The National Museum affords a closer look at the country as does the Vasa Museum, which houses the glorious Vasa battleship, the pride of the Swedish imperial fleet. Opera Kallaren and the National Theater are a great option for a night out!

Follow workouts that are designed specifically to align the body so that the lymphatic system can function at maximum capacity. Don’t Forget Fun Working out shouldn’t be a have to, it should be a want to. If your workouts are fun, they become something to look forward to, an invigorating and uplifting part of your day. Adopt a regular practice that you enjoy! Create a WHY Picture yourself in 90 days. What do you look like? Feel like? Pinpointing very specific goals (and even writing them down!) is a great way to stay on track. Workouts should be great for partner and group fitness for extra accountability. ocated in the Santa Ynez Valley, close to Santa Barbara in California, Buellton has long been shadowed by the fame of the movie Sideways, which was shot in the area and brought along a fair share of tourism. The city is slowly but surely moving out of that phase now and staking its claim as a credible wine destination all its own on the west coast. The slogan ‘Eat, Stay & Play’ is not one that Buellton takes lightly. Whether foodie or oenophile, adventure seeker or local explorer, this is an upcoming destination worth adding to your trip planner.

Of course, the vineyards and wineries located here are a big draw. Consider a wine tour to get you acquainted with wine makers and other local growers. Recommendations include the Santa Ynez Wine Club, Brander Vineyards, Rancho Olivos, Andrew Murray Vineyards and Pence Ranch Wine. 246 Wine Tours is a local company that offers full day trips and can easily customize the itinerary to your preferences.
