health on the go

Off on a Trip? Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, your health and fitness levels can take a big hit if you are not taking measures to stay fit on the road. Even making small efforts can help keep you fit and feeling good while you are traveling. Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc., who is also the strength and conditioning coach for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, shares six things to make a priority on your next trip, so that you maintain your routine:

sleep According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep plays a vital role in good health and wellbeing. Getting enough quality sleep helps to protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. When you are sleeping during travel, it can be more difficult to get a good night’s sleep, especially if you are in a different time zone. Try to maintain a bedtime routine, and when it’s time for bed, keep the room dark, ensure it’s at a cool temperature, and keep the phones and tablets in a separate room or turn them off. Consider taking melatonin to help with jet lag, better sleep, and to help reset the body’s clock. It can be bought overthe-counter at any pharmacy in the United States.

6 www.travelerandtourist.com

hydration The American Heart Association reports that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles, and it helps the muscles work more efficiently. They also report that it is important to keep tabs on your hydration during travel, because you may sweat differently in different climates. Again, this is an extremely important area. It’s important to stay well hydrated. Opt for water, unsweetened tea, or some coconut water. Avoid sugary beverages, and avoid drinking too much alcohol. You can help your body stay hydrated by eating foods that have a lot of water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, and pineapple.

nutrition This is extremely important when traveling. Plan your meals in advance to ensure you will be eating healthy. Use your phone to look up restaurant menus ahead of time, so you can opt for healthier entrees. Carry healthy snacks with you, such as trail mix, nuts, dried fruit, healthy snack bars, fresh fruit, etc. When dining out, steer clear of the dishes that have been deep-fried. If you can carry a small cooler with you on the road, keep fresh fruit, veggies, and dips such as hummus in it. Eating healthy when traveling will help you maintain your weight, keep you from feeling guilty, and help you avoid gastrointestinal issues. According to the National Institutes of Health, you can still eat healthy when dining out. They recommend avoiding all-you-can-eat buffets, and opting for dishes that have been baked, broiled, grilled, roasted, or steamed.

strength improvise mobility + stretching According to the National Institute on Aging, flexibility and stretching exercises give you more freedom of movement for your physical and everyday activities. Stretching can improve your flexibility. Stick with your normal workout routines as much as possible. It’s very important to continue your mobility and stretching routines while traveling.

When traveling, there is a good chance you won’t have all the things you use at home to get in a good workout, but that doesn’t mean you can’t improvise. Plan ahead and see what’s in the area you will be in. Be flexible and use what you will have access to, so that you get that workout in. Check for hotel or nearby gyms, trails where you can go for a run or a brisk walk, and parks that offer a free workout system. You can also pack some lightweight fitness gadgets, such as your running shoes, a jump rope, and resistance bands. Do what you have to in order to get the activity in. (Image:Unsplash)

According to the Mayo Clinic, strength training can help you develop strong bones, manage your weight, enhance your quality of life, manage chronic conditions, and sharpen your thinking skills. It can also help you reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass, and help your body burn calories in a more efficient manner. For most people it serves as a “reset” of sorts for their body, from a posture perspective, and it helps solidify that proper pattern. You can put together a strength training routine that uses your own body weight and can be done in hotel rooms or outdoors.

This Healthy Routine Will Help Keep You Fit! 7

luggagehero Luggage Storage Network now in 37 Cities Kaffebar, a LuggageHero site

What do a downtown L.A.bike shop, a West Hollywood burger joint and a Santa Monica dry cleaners’ have in common? They’re among the more than 25 independent businesses around Los Angeles storing travelers’ luggage as part of LuggageHero.com - a global network of safe, convenient and affordable luggage storage sites in local shops, cafés and other businesses servicing travelers who are usually stuck with their luggage before check-in or after checkout. 20 www.travelerandtourist.com

“I started this in my hometown of Copenhagen in 2016 and that city remains one of our top ones. The other cities in the top five are London, NYC, Paris and Rome,” says Danish founder and CEO Jannik Lawaetz, who started the luggagestoring service from personal experience. “Los Angeles is our 37th city and we plan to add several more this year.” The company was named one of PhocusWire’s Hot 25 Startups for 2019 and recently acquired American competitor Knock Knock City, fortifying its reach in North America.

Jan/feb 2020 “When I stayed at an Airbnb in Barcelona, I had no options for leaving my luggage anywhere after checking out, so I had to lug it around the city,” says Lawaetz. On the other hand, when he was an Airbnb host in his home city of Copenhagen, more than half of his guests asked for a place to leave their bags on checkout day. “It’s a great feeling to make a concept that really helps people. Being left with your luggage can really ruin an arrival or departure day.” Since launching in 2016, the company has stored more than 1.65 million hours of luggage across more than 1,400 drop-off points. All shops are vetted by a LuggageHero representative.Other cities offering this service include New York, Paris, London, San Francisco, Chicago and Barcelona. Retailers store the bags in closets, extra rooms and other secure spots, while LuggageHero handles everything on the business side. Travelers book reservations through the LuggageHero app (online, Android or iOS), and shops receive a percentage of the revenue. Each bag is secured with a tamper-proof security seal and the bag and its contents are insured for $3,000. There is no cancellation fee and online customer

Founder and CEO Jannik Lawaetz (Images: LuggageHero.com)

support is offered 24/7. Travelers wanting to use the service in other cities in North America and Europe can find a list of all 37 LuggageHero cities here. Pricing in Los Angeles locations is $1 an hour plus a $2 handling fee for each piece of luggage, with a maximum daily charge of $8, including handling fee. The storage sites are conveniently located near tourist sights, in popular neighborhoods or close to major transportation hubs. A map of general locations of all Los Angelesarea drop-off points is here. Some criteria for users to keep in mind when choosing a location, he advises, are the hours the venues are open. Lawaetz adds, “If you can pick a shop that offers something you already are interested in, that’s helpful. Some travelers rent bikes, so why not store luggage there while you’re on the bike. Also, choose your location in a way that meshes with your entire day. You might cover a wide geographic area, so choose a storage spot to drop off where it will also be convenient to pick up and not have to drag your bag too far from where you’ll be staying.” 21

pet care

Travel With Pets Travel during the holidays and otherwise can be stressful. If you are bringing your furry friend with you, it’s important to remember a few simple tips to ensure everyone remains safe. A small business owner for over a decade, Johnna Devereaux is the founder of Fetch RI, a holistic pet boutique and supply retail store in Rhode Island. She has presented at veterinary hospitals on the benefits of proper nutrition for dogs and cats, and feeding pets in a species-appropriate way. Here, she shares a few pointers for fun travels with pets.

1 2

Bring a little bit of home with you: Going on long car rides and staying in hotels or in new spaces can be frightening. The best way to help your pet is to bring something they love from home along for the ride. Their favorite blanket or bed along with their favorite toy should be just enough to help with their journey.

Be prepared: A few important things you should pack besides food and water include your pet’s vaccine records, a first aid kit and a current picture of your pet. Don’t forget those poop bags either-besides being useful for their namesake, they can also be used for clean up if your pet gets sick in the car!

26 www.travelerandtourist.com

3 4 5 6

Safety first: Always leash your dog before they exit the vehicle. This is especially important in new surroundings as a dog may become skittish to new sounds or sights, act out of character and run away, or worse, get hurt. Anything you can do to make an unfamiliar place feel welcome is a good move.

Stretch those legs: As a general rule of thumb, every time you fill up your gas tank you should take your dog for a brief walk around the parking lot to stretch their legs and relieve themselves if needed. Aim for a short stretch at least once every three hours. And if your pet is a tad bit more energetic, then factor that into your travel time as well.

Forget something? If you have forgotten your pup’s food or thought you’d be able to purchase some at your destination, only to find out they don’t carry your brand, buy a food with a similar ingredient list and also purchase some unsweetened, organic canned pumpkin. The fiber in the pumpkin may help avoid any digestive disturbances the new food may cause.

Enjoy yourself: Our dogs feel our stress and the best way to ensure everyone is comfortable and happy is to realize how lucky we are that we get to travel with our four-legged companions in the first place. Have a dog with a nervous belly? Ginger root may help calm an unsettled stomach and is best given just before departure.

Jan/feb 2020

Clinical Pet Nutritionist Johnna Devereaux works with Bow Wow Labs, Inc. which has developed a new product, Bully Buddy, that will ensure your dog is safe while chewing on the much-loved bully stick treat. A durable, easy-to-use, veterinarian-vetted, and dogapproved device that tightly secures bully sticks, Bully Buddy prevents dogs from choking on the tail-end of the treat. The tightening ring keeps bully sticks secure, and dogs can really appreciate this feature as opposed to working their paws to keep a loose bully stick in place. Bully Buddy is a musthave product to have on hand and a great gadget to include in your pet’s safezone. There’s a Bully Buddy available for every size dog and Bow Wow Labs has their own line of healthy and nutritious Bully Sticks that are hand sorted to fit each size of Bully Buddy. The Bully Sticks are low-odor and are sustainably sourced from free-range, grass-fed cattle that are 100% hormone free, and never treated with chemicals. (Images:Provided)

The yukon

The smallest and westernmost part of Canada, Yukon isn’t typically ranked high on any list but it should be. The natural beauty found in this area of the country is stunning – Kluane National Park and Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located here and boasts Mt. Logan, the highest mountain in Canada. The territory itself is named after the Yukon River that flows here and the capital is in Whitehorse, the largest city. The history and culture of the First Nations people, who are the majority population here, is an additional draw for international visitors.

For a fun road trip across Yukon terrain, head out on the Top of the World Highway into Alaska for Beaver Creek, the most western point of entry into Canada. The untouched greenery is unbelievable and wildlife encounters are most likely to occur en route. You will stop at Poker Creek with a grand population of two – officers on both sides of the border and a photo opportunity with some serious bragging rights. Chicken, along Alaska Highway, provides some nourishment and amusement. 33

The yukon

Other draws include a gold panning tour, given the great gold rush of the 18th century that occurred here. The area is naturally rich in minerals and the discovery of gold led to a swell in the population during that period. The Commissioner’s residence and the Klondike Spirit dinner cruise provide more opportunities to learn from local resources about a lesser-known part of Canada. Driving toward Haines Junction, stop along the way at Kluane Museum of Natural History in Burwash Landing and the Sheep Mountain Interpretive Center. For a once-in-alifetime experience you will not regret, flightseeing over glaciers at Kluane National Park is highly recommended. The cultural center here is a must-visit to learn more about the First Nations communities, their ways of life, and contribution to the country. Kayak down Kathleen Lake if your schedule allows. The Dawson City Music Festival, Yukon River Quest Race and several cultural festivals provide good experiences to plan your travels around. snacks No road trip would be complete without that customary bag of snacks. Chips, sweets, fresh fruit, veggies, soda, coffee...you name it, the list goes on. Make certain everyone in your traveling party brings their favorite snacks to ensure that they’ll have plenty to eat when they’re on their way. Keep in mind everyone’s dietary preferences and restrictions too.

5 essentials for the perfect roadtrip getaway If you’re looking for a few must haves for planning the perfect road trip getaway with family and friends, you’re about to love these tips. While the idea of being carefree and fun might tempt you, there’s a reason why planning is key – have a few of these sorted out before you finally lock the door to your home and head on out on an adventure.

pillows + blankets Sleeping in the car is a thing when it comes to road trips! And to be truthful, the car isn’t the most comfortable place to sleep. Instead of craning that neck and trying to find a comfortable position to rest, have a few pillows in the car to help. Pack up some blankets as well while you’re at it. That way you can stay warm while everyone else needs the windows down.

music Driving for a long duration can be fun but those hours on the road can really start to add up. Put together some of your favorite tunes on a USB drive or create a playlist on your phone that can be accessed via Bluetooth. And if you are traveling solo then maybe this is the perfect time for that audiobook or talk show you wanted to listen to months ago.

drinks Depending on how long your road trip is going to be, caffeine is probably going to be a must. Other options include tea, energy drinks or even juices for some sugar. Definitely keep cans of water available to refill your handy bottle on the go and in case of emergencies where you might not have a convenience store nearby.

maps Relying on technology to guide you to your next destination is fine, but what happens when you lose signal or battery life and find yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere? Trust us, it happens! Before pulling out of your driveway, have several maps or printed out options in the glovebox, just in case. You never know when you might have to resort to paper.

Lost and Found in Spain, Tales of an Ambassador’s Wife There’s a Spanish proverb: Con pan y vino, se anda el camino, which translates to “With bread and wine, you can walk your road.” In other words, with good food and wine, life is never too hard. While serving alongside her husband from 2010 through 2013, Susan Lewis Solomont made a point of sampling cuisine from all over the country. As she writes in her memoir, it was a delicious challenge. Having tasted all sides of the Spain food experience - from 23 of its 34 Michelin 3-starred restaurants to street food and cafés - she offers her notto-miss recommendations. Before her husband’s appointment as U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra under President Barack Obama, she served as a philanthropic advisor at TPI (The Philanthropic Initiative) in Boston. In 2013, she was named International Woman of the Year by FEDEPE, the leading organization for Spanish women executives and directors.
