ELL readers, as you know the time is fast approaching when you will be required to vote in the Broad Sheep referendum. In a couple of months you, the miserable ill-educated public will be expected to cast your vote on the big one. Will Broad Sheep join Europe? This is an extremely complicated issue and I’m not surprised that your little brains are finding it hard to decide which way to vote, so I will attempt to lay out the pros and cons of the argument for you in a concise and clear way so that when the day comes you will know where to put your little cross, or is it a tick... hmmm, not quite sure, I’ll have to try and decide on that soon. Perhaps we can put together a small focus group to discuss the matter. Anyway on with the show. And as luck would have it we have two ‘experts’ to help us chart a path through this cross-channel minefield. First, Geoff Jobsworth, the obnoxious git who always sits in the corner stool at The Dogged Duck and seems to have a very strong opinion on... everything. And alongside him the Mayor of Titley, Sir Jeremy Jones Johnson whose obsessive self-interest and lack of social skills is a lesson to us all. Budget Implications Apart from one disastrous month in 1996, Broad Sheep has always been free, i.e. £0.00. The question is, if we go into Europe will that be £0.00 or €0.00 and what are the implications for the pound in your pocket. Let’s ask Sir Jeremy first as he is the poshest. Sir Jeremy Jones Johnson To be utterly frank I never really carry any money myself and I certainly never carry any of that silly pounds, shillings and pence stuff. The nest in the Bahamas is all in dollars and I spend most of the year in Nice, so I suppose the answer would be Euros. I’ve never actually been to an arts event in Shropshire, Herefordshire or Powys except for Bertie’s wedding so a student rag like Broad sheep is not much use to me anyway. Geoff Jobsworth The thing that pisses me off most is that business with the straight cucumbers. I ask you - what right has Brussels got to go around telling us what we can or can’t eat? you wait, that mag of yours is B5 paper size, right well Brussels will never let you get away with that. Everything will have to be A4 or A5, you just wait. My son went to Italy last year and he says the spaghetti’s got no proper mince on top. What use is that?
Immigration and Migration If Broad Sheep goes into Europe, it will have to be printed in 25 new languages which would have massive cost implications. The question is: will potential readers in Düsseldorf or Genoa want to read about blues band in the pub at Llangunllo? Or conversly, will Broad Sheep have to start printing details of all the art exhibitions in Krakow and the capital of Slovenia which has momentarily skipped my memory. (Okay, I’ve just Googled it - it’s Ljubljana). Lets start with Geoff this time. Geoff Jobsworth Are you gonna buy me a drink for all this information? I suppose a Euro twat like you only drinks Beaujolais Nouveau or some such cat’s piss. Oh, thanks, that’s better, I’ll have a pint of Boiling Well. Now where was I? Yes, cucumbers. What’s wrong with bent cucumbers, they taste exactly the same. It makes no bloody sense. I don’t want to read Broad Sheep in Romanian. In fact I don’t want to read it in English. If you want my opinion it’s a load of artsy fartsy rubbish and the sooner it buggers off to Barcelona, the better. Sir Jeremy I’m all in favour of having all the comforts of home at our little villa on the Med. I think it might be rather jolly, pissing ourselves laughing at some leftie nonsense in a village hall in Canon Pyon while we’re sitting on the verandah with a bottle of bubbly and a couple of lobsters. The thing that really worries me is that whole Brexit business. I was in the same house as Boris and David at Eton and frankly they were both disasters waiting to happen. Boris was the class clown and out for Boris and no-one else, and David spent all his time fagging up to the seniors. Anyway I’m really in favour of the free market and I don’t want anything that’s gonna stop me swanning around Europe in the manner to which I am accustomed. But when I say free market that doesn’t mean I want a load of poor Hungarians coming over to Blighty to try and earn a living, God forbid. Hope that helps, old chum. Got to dash, plane to catch. So readers, there you have it and now it’s time for you to get off the fence and make a decision for once in your useless life.

another dispatch from the city
Do it for Her D
ID you know that she is watching your every move? The Queen, I mean. Hidden beneath that crown, that bejewelled follicle-encompassing obelisk – a trophy from a long and bitter war against a vicious alien race that you didn’t even hear about because the Mainstream Media (I’m looking at you, Broad Sheep, you establishment stooges, yes I shall bite the hand that feeds while nesting sentences within sentences with no regard for my own personal safety or flow or readability) felt that it would pop your poor brain like an egg in a microwave (so look away dear children and lose yourself in Kardashian Summits and One Direction U-Turns) – lies a huge, fat, glistening eye, a hideous ocular dome utterly opaque in its transluence and cosmic in its all-seeing-ness. And through this eye, she, the Queen, the Monarch, the Big Lady, the Glaring and Terrible Matriarch, God’s Own Au Pair, sees all. She sees you. She can see you right now. I’d stop doing that if I were you. She sees. She knows. Clean for her. Clean, they say! Clean, cries Boris as he scrabbles, bloody-fingered, for stray toenails, hoping against hope that he can get his room ship-shape and Bristol fashion before she sees (spoiler alert – she’s already seen, it’s too late for you de Pfeffel). Clean, Gove moans piteously, as he chases an imaginary broom around a room that exists only in the furthest and most disturbing depths of his fevered psyche (the Queen saw him slyly stick that gum under the table, of course she did, and to teach him a lesson she reached into his head and plucked out his mind). Clean, cry the off-brand Minions in their dark yellow not-quite-like-the-ones-in-the-film costumes, as they roll around in the muck, fighting over the last dustpan and brush in Wilko, clawing one another’s eyes out for the last squirt of Dettol in the spray-y thing. It’s too late for us in the city. It was too late weeks ago. But you, my dear sweet country folk, for you there may yet be a chance. Clean for the Queen. Do it for her. Because she can see. That eye of hers, it can peer into the pasty you’re munching, spraying crumbs all over the carpet, you vile troll, were you born in a barn or something? It can squint at your television as you listlessly lob old meatballs at the screen, hoping they will silence Corden’s warblings (spoiler alert – they won’t). It will weep with fury as it falls upon the untouched bottle of Cillit Bang in your utility room. And bang – your world is gone.

Don’t make the mistake we made, my most cherished and innocent rural cherubs. We waited far too long to realise what it all meant. Just a harmless, slightly old-fashioned branding concept for an otherwise pretty reasonable street-cleaning campaign, they said, anachronistically but ultimately harmlessly playing on the residual pro-monarchist feeling that still runs in the nation’s collective bloodstream like some mild hereditary venereal disease. Just ignore it, they said, and it’ll go away. What fools they were. What fools we all were. Did they not realise that she could hear through her eyes? They all can, all the Royals. Some genetic thing. The whole time we were sitting around in our filthy pits, enjoying that feeling of independence that you can only get from lounging in a mess of your own making, basking in freedom, freedom from the tyranny of enforced cleanliness, she was watching. She was listening. She was biding her time, sitting upon that throne, idly twirling Corgis around her thick, leathery green tentacles. No-one would have believed, in the first months of 2016, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless dark of Buckingham Palace. No-one could have dreamed that were being scrutinised, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility that we should probably do a bit of housework. And yet, across the gulf of public opinion, a mind immeasurably superior to ours was watching our slovenly behaviour with one furious, pulsating eye. And slowly, surely, she drew her plans against us. When they came for Kim and Aggie, I did not speak up, because I was not Kim and Aggie. When they came for Anthea Turner (she did a reality show about a decade ago called Perfect Housewife in which she taught people how to be better at keeping their houses neat and tidy), I did not speak up, because I was not Anthea Turner. When they came for Nick Hewer (host of the CIWM Clean Britain Awards), I did not speak up, mostly because I remembered that explaining jokes only occasionally makes them funnier, mostly it just makes them a bit club-footed and rubbish. Then when they came from me, I meekly accepted a pair of marigolds and some Febreze and got to work. For her.

cinema ANOMALISA (15) BEING JOHN MALKOVICH began with a puppet, but in his second directorial outing following the byzantine SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK, anarchic screenwriter Charlie Kaufman’s ANOMALISA is peopled entirely by them – an accidental love story whose characters’ emotions are somehow made all the more acute by their stop-motion animation. Voiced by David Thewlis, Michael Stone is a motivational author arriving in Cincinnati to deliver a lecture. Nursing a busted marriage and a long-regretted romantic break-up, his ennui is palpable until, that is, a chance encounter with an insecure but kindhearted fan (SYNECDOCHE’s Jennifer Jason Leigh, scaling a hugely expressive tonal range) triggers a mutual epiphany. Equally impressive is Tom Noonan who voices literally dozens of other characters, the whole beautifully rendered enterprise proving an idiosyncratic, life-affirming gem. All reviews by Mark Williams

HIGH-RISE (15) J.G. Ballard’s dystopian novel about a dysfunctional society inside a giant towerblock was considered unfilmable, but then so was David Cronenberg’s CRASH. Awarding the maverick writer/director partnership of Amy Jump and Ben Wheatley (SIGHTSEERS) their biggest budget yet was a masterstroke for both films’ producer, Jeremy Thomas, ushering onboard established stars and ace production designer, Mark Tildesley (THE CONSTANT GARDENER). Laing (Tom Hiddleston, BBCtv’s NIGHT MANAGER), an affluent new tenant of the titular HIGH-RISE, quickly attracts the lascivious attentions of close neighbour Sienna Miller, and then MAD MEN’s Elizabeth Moss playing the wife of the culturally stratified community’s volatile troublemaker (Luke Evans). The experiment that its architect (ultra-laconic Jeremy Irons) conceived as “a crucible for change” then descends into anarchy, and worse, in this great-looking, darkly hilarious drama. 14 April TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (12A) Perton Civic Centre 15 April DARK HORSE: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY OF DREAM ALLIANCE (PG) Shifnal VH 01952 462787 15 April THE LADY IN THE VAN (PG) Dilwyn Cedar Hall 15 April THE LADY IN THE VAN (PG) Bosbury Parish Hall 01531 640415 15 April THE LADY IN THE VAN (PG) Stoke Prior VH 01568 760423

(15) In their first flat-out comedy since 2008’s BURN AFTER READING, Ethan and Joel Coen revisit the glamorous Hollywood fakery of the 1950s where an uptight British film director (Ralph Fiennes) desperately tries to eradicate the Southern drawl of an inept young thesp (Alden Aldrich, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES). But the studio’s problems escalate wildly when the debauched star of their unfinished sword’n’sandals epic, Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), is kidnapped by a shadowy group calling themselves The Future, forcing them to hire industry fixer, Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) to retrieve their valuable property. Fast-moving interwoven plot lines, the Coens’ trademark dry humour and an ensemble cast including Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton and, yes, Dolph Lundgren clearly enjoying themselves are a total joy. 16 April THE LADY IN THE VAN (PG) Tasley Parish Room 01746 764881 16 April THE LADY IN THE VAN (PG) Aston on Clun VH 01588 660545 16 April THE LADY IN THE VAN (PG) Trefonen VH 01691 657011 16 April TRASH (15) Hanley VH 01886 853195 16 April BROOKLYN (12A) Everest Hall, Llanfair Waterdine 01547 510672 16 April BROOKLYN (12A) Mollington & Backford VH 01244 851713

Mortimers, Ludlow
W
ITHIN the quaintness of its oak-panelled innards, No. 17 Corve Street in Ludlow has been home to a number of restaurants over the past 20 years, and no doubt for years before that. Mr Pernickety’s researches stretch back only as far as 1994, when The Oaks was opened by a chap called Ken Adams and his wife Isobel. They seemed to have had a sound if not especially discerning following, until they sold the lease in 2000 and moved to the Waterdine Inn. The Oaks was bought by Claude Bosi, a young chef who had already been awarded a Michelin star at the otherwise unlovely and undistinguished Overton Grange on the old Hereford Road. Claude, from a family of Lyonnaise restaurateurs, opened his own place, Hibiscus, in the Corve Street premises. Within a year, he had earned an etoile from M Michelin, and three years later, a second. There was no doubt that this ambitious Frenchman was going places, and go he did, in 2007, taking the name of the restaurant, his Michelin stars, and some staff with him to Maddox Street, in that part of London where Russian is widely spoken. Mr P would guess that cheffing to the standard M. Bosi had achieved required a much fuller flow of appreciative (and rich) punters than Ludlow could ever supply, especially on a wet Wednesday in winter. He sold the lease of the restaurant to the equally ambitious (if less celebrated) Alan Murchison, whose declared (some would say, fanciful) aim was to open 10 Michelin starred restaurants within 8 years. He’d already had some success at L’Ortolan down in the fertile, banker-manured valley of the lower Thames. He appointed another young chef, Will Holland, to oversee the kitchens at La Bécasse, where Will went on to earn his own Michelin Star. Mr P reviewed La Bécasse at that time, and while acknowledging the potential of Will’s skills, felt that the place fell short of the perfect dining experience. Apart from some minor gastro shortcomings, there had been about the place a kind of holy hush, such as you find in many self-conscious foodie Meccas in the sticks, though Mr P felt disinclined to moderate his natural exuberance in deference to a mere luncheon, however well-cooked. Then, bizarrely, each diner found in front of them a large, naff pink glass plate, whose purpose was never discovered before it was whisked away, unused. To annoy the customer a little further, the waiting staff had an irritating habit of intoning a discourse on the food they were about to serve (which any intelligent punter should have taken in at the point of ordering) and then hovering around like attentive dragonflies to top up wine glasses each time a sip was supped. Young Will subsequently lost his star in 2011, and sought new pastures while Mr Murchison, having briefly achieved only one fifth of his ambition, found himself floundering in a fiscal crisis, and left Ludlow. No. 17 lay dormant for several months until in 2015 the premises were taken over and re-branded Mortimers by chef, Wayne Smith, and front of house man, Andrew Brooks, both of whom have spent time under the direction of M. Claude Bosi.

Mr P, his Lovely Companion and his Very Old Friend – the one whose colourful life experiences have found him
sporadically wielding knives and skillets in restaurant kitchens, as well as playing keyboards in a wrinkle-rock band – went to Mortimers one day last week to sample luncheon, always a good test of a restaurant: three courses at £25. They found that the new operators at this gilded premises, evidently seeking continuity, have adopted the naff pink glass plate tradition practised by La Bécasse, Mr P can only assume, to retain a little of the gilt provided by the fifteen years in which ‘fine dining’ had been offered there. Mr P doubts the efficacy of this tactic, tempting though it may at first appear, for occupying such formerly august premises is inevitably a Sabatier of two edges. For one thing, it is bound to encourage Great Expectations, especially if it presents itself as serving cuisine which, on the face of it, might be thought comparable to what went before. The former, more relaxing first-floor bar has been abandoned, moved downstairs and inserted at the front of the dining-room. Mr P can appreciate the labour saving practicality of this, although it must have replaced eight or ten cover spaces. This bar area, although essentially an attractive, oak-panelled space, is severely compromised by some of the most unattractive and style-less furniture up at which the LC has ever turned her fastidious nose. Mr P and the LC – in Lenten abstinence – watched enviously as the VOF guzzled a well-chilled fino while they sipped soft sugary drinks, nibbled standard issue nuts, root crisps and olives and made their luncheon choices. In the dining-room, still carpeted in the inherited Joseph’s Coat stripes, the lack of sophistication in the furnishings department was once more evident, both in the previously mentioned pink glass plates and a bogus-flame fire of such pink and purple hideousness lurking in the fireplace that the LC had to stifle a gasp, for fear of upsetting the six other punters who had been seated at the table nearest to Mr P’s party. The last time Mr P experienced Wayne Smith’s food was several years ago when he was at the sadly, badly run Dinham Hall Hotel – a difficult ambience in which to produced an enjoyable dinner. This time, for his first course, Mr P had Tortellini of smoked ham with an enjoyable smoky consommé; the VOF ate ‘pressed’ chicken with what he described as a ‘yummy’ haggis bonbon, while the LC enjoyed a goat’s cheese mousse with beetroot (a strongly ‘in’ flavour at the moment), bland apple sauce and a tiny little meringue which Mr P happily snaffled. Her pleasure in it was slightly marred by it being served on a funny shaped plate, of which aspiring, unsophisticated restaurateurs make the mistake of thinking unusual equals chic. She followed this with a serving of excellent rare beef and girolles (which she especially liked), watercress purée and a ‘slightly
slimy’ truffle mash. The VOF had cod – ‘a tad overcooked,’ he said – minus the advertised capers, whose piquancy would have given the fish a useful lift. Mr P’s own Confit of duck was good enough and well accompanied with celeriac and Savoy cabbage. The chocolate fondant with which he followed it was a little dry. The others both had Poached Rhubarb, which they liked although the accompanying Panna Cotta, although well-flavoured, they found lacking in the texture department – too firm, and without that special soft wobbliness it should have had. The VOF, quite needlessly uncomfortable at Mr P and his LC’s abstemiousness, drank only two glasses of the house Chardonnay (du Languedoc), which he pronounced fresh and zesty. Mr P and his companions felt that they’d had a competently prepared lunch, generally of good quality and reasonable value at £25 for the three course, although, the equivalent in evening at £40 perhaps less so. The service was discreet and not too fussy, although the punters should have been more scattered, not packed together to create an illusion of fullness. But they left underwhelmed and wondering if there really is much scope in Ludlow for a ‘fine-dining’ outfit which is unlikely to become a destination diner. Mr P felt that perhaps something less aspirational, lower in the price range and more imaginatively nichey might have been a better use of the place. www.misterpernickety.com
