What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches
Peter and the Silver Train
O
NCE upon a time there was a very naughty boy named Peter and he lived in a tiny village in the countryside. He was a lazy child and all day long he either sat round playing his guitar or he went whizzing round town on his bicycle annoying the townsfolk. Peter knew all the shopkeepers in the town and as he flew past he’d smile and wave. “Hello Mr Cucumber” he’d shout. “Hello Mr Medicine”. “Hello Mr Newspaper”. “Hello whatever that shop is with the boxes in the window”. He even said hello to the grumpy old man in the Antiques shop. Then one day his family and friends said “It’s time you went to the big city and got a bit of culture, otherwise you’ll just turn into a lout and end up hanging around the library steps, dropping chips and spitting on the floor. It’s time you went to some art galleries, it’s even time you went to the theatre”. “What’s the theatre”? asked Peter. “Is it like Shaun The Sheep on telly? I like that”. “No, it’s not like Shaun The Sheep” they said. “It’s more relevant and thoughtful. It’s about issues and ideas and it’s not on a screen, it’s real people”. “It sounds a bit shit” said Peter. “But what the hell, I’ll give it a go. Will I be able to ride my bike”? And his family said “No, because we’re going to go on a big red bus and we’re going to go on a long silver train that goes down into a big tunnel underneath the city”. Peter just thought they were telling fibs in order to get him to leave his bike at home. So off they went to the city in the family car and first of all the countryside was very similar to the countryside around his village, but as they went on there were more cars and more trucks and more roads and more and more shops. Until eventually after four hours they were on a place called M25 and after that they wasn’t really any more countryside at all. Then they went round the Great North Circle and all through the Tottenham Hotspurs and they came to a place called Bethnal Green and the family said “We’re going to stay here for the next four days. It’s a very up and coming area, in fact it’s the street where nice Reggie and Ronald Kray used to live”. (They were twins and they loved their mum). So next morning Peter got up early so he could go and say hello to all the shopkeepers in Brick Lane. But, alas, all the shops were called Vintage and they were selling the same clothes they sell in the charity shop in his village, and they weren’t open and you couldn’t go in them cause all the nice shopkeepers had been out largin’ it down the clubs the night before and weren’t likely to get out of bed before lunchtime. So Peter went down Bethnal Green High Street to say hello to the nice market stall men. “Hello nice market stall men” he shouted and they shouted back “Are you takin’ the bleedin’ piss? Shove off you poncey little arshole”. So off they went to catch the long silver train, but first they had to get a card to open the little gates to let them go down the hole and this was very complicated Small Ads 4 and even the grown-ups couldn’t do it because they were ‘thickos from the country’. They had to get a woman from the station to show them which buttons to press and Papers 6 a big queue of people built up behind them and everyone got very angry because Art 8 they were going to be late. On the silver train nobody looked at anyone else except Art workshops 11 Peter who was calculating what percentage of people have their telephones on their lap and were either fiddling about or listening to something in their little earpieces Cinema 16 and it was 99.99%, which is nearly 100. Dance 20 When they got to the middle of the big town they got off the train and come up Food 22 the moving staircase called ‘the escape later’ and they started walking around in the rain. They walked round and round getting wetter and wetter and they went to Music 24 The Academy and The National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery and The Music workshops 35 Hayward Gallery and the Tate Gallery and it rained and rained and Peter whined and Venues 37 whined and whined so that every hour or so they had to stop to buy him a milkshake Band directory 38 and a bun to shut him up. And every time they stopped to have a bun the grown-ups looked at the bill and raised their eyebrows and said “Bleeding hell £22.50 for two Theatre 40 cups of tea and a piece of fruit cake, they must be kidding”! But they were not. Word 43 And eventually when it got dark they went to the South Bank which is a special Green pages 46 place they keep free for people who need to do some culture and also skate bums who are trying to learn how to make their skateboards scrape down the pedesComp therapies 48 trian railings. But Peter was not allowed to stay and watch them because they We take no had to go to the National Theatre to see a play. The play was called ‘Port’ and the responsibility for sets were amazing, even better than the Presteigne Pantomime. A whole side of a the veracity of the hospital came bursting out of the stage and a whole motorway flyover came down information herein from the ceiling and a real car came whooshing in from the side of the stage. And the play was about a girl growing up from the age of twelve to the age of twentyPete Mustill Mayfield, Stapleton, two and Peter asked why all the women in the play are nice and all the men are Nr Presteigne, Powys bastards and the lady who took Peter to the play says “Unfortunately in life you’ll LD8 2LS find that generally to be the case”. And afterwards they went to a pub for cocktails Tel: 01544 260051 and the grown-ups said “Bloody hell, £37.90 for a round of drinks, they must be Email: info@broadsheep.com kidding”. But they were not. Website: www.broadsheep.com THE END

I
T is a hot Sunday noon in Sancti Spiritu, the capital of a province in Cuba, and the Casa de Trova is already jumping. The Casa de Trova is a big room open to the sky with a stage at one end and a bar down one side. There is a seven-piece band on the stage. The tables in front of the bar are full of people. On the tables are bottles of Coke, except it is not Coke, because the Coke is on the wrong side of the American blockade, so this is a socialist cola with the authentic taste of hair oil beaten up in sugar water. Under the tables are cardboard boxes that hold six bottles of Ron Mulata. At ten, when the Casa de Trova opened its doors, the cases were full of full bottles. Now they are about half empty. We are drinking mojitos and as we batter the mint with the straw we are wondering how various things can be. One thing we are wondering is how the band can be playing like a big beautiful engine all the way round the beat but not on or indeed off the beat, so your brain supplies the beat and becomes part of the engine, the way everyone else in this open-topped room is also part of the engine. Another thing we are wondering is how it is possible to know that that eighty-year-old man is such a fine dancer when he is not in fact moving a muscle while that beautiful brown girl is winding herself around him like an anaconda. Another thing we are wondering about is why we are the only non-Cuban people in the place, and how we will get another mojito. Actually we get two more, and the wondering stops, and the music carts us away. The average age of the audience is well over sixty, and what they lack in edge they make up for in civility. (Hey! says the man in the cloth cap, shaking his maracas at us. Those guys over there. They come from England. England! Take a bow, England! We bow. More mojitos.) People start getting up from the crowd and taking a turn on the claves, or the tres, or singing a bit. They are very good. By four o’clock the floor is paved with empty Mulata bottles, and the music has spiralled up through the hole in the roof and is flying in close formation with someone’s racing pigeons through the air above the road to Trinidad, the next city. In Trinidad the Casa de la Musica, a staterun enterprise like the Casa de Trova but different in

a way about which Raul Castro may care but I do not, has spilled out on to the big flight of steps that run down alongside the cathedral. The band starts calmish, a spot of son under the last flush of sunset, the singer a man with malformed feet and no fingers. The tres jangles on, six strings arranged in three pairs made of varying grades of fuse wire. Under the tres the rhythm and the brass start to separate until there they go again, playing all around the beat but never on it or off it, and the big cobbled landings on the stone steps fill up with brown people dancing, first in pairs, then in fours, barmy salsa reels and strathspeys, and out come the Mulata and the stars. Next morning, the only music is three very old men, guitars patched with plywood, playing in the wedge of shade alongside the shop that sells rum and cigarettes. There is no Guantanamera, no Besame Mucho, no Quizas, Quizas, Quizas. This is for their own amusement, because it is a fine, cool morning with turkey vultures spiralling in the deep blue. Inside the empty church, something is flitting in the vault above the pinnacles of the altarpiece. It may be the Holy Spirit, but it looks too small for that, so it is probably a humming bird. Outside it is eleven o’clock, and the stone streets are ringing with voices, and all over the town the music is starting again. Lle Guevara

A LATE QUARTET Following his laconic low-rent fraudster in SEVEN PSYCOPATHS, Christopher Walken leads what is essentially a fantastic ensemble piece by newbie director, Yaron Zilberman playing Peter, the leader of a world-renowned string quartet who’s stricken by early symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Reuniting Mark Ivanir and Catherine Keener from 2008’s much underrated comedy, WHAT JUST HAPPENED, along with Philip Seymour Hoffman as the latter’s husband and performing partner, A LATE QUARTET follows their reactions to Peter’s decision to quit in the best interests of the group. As emotions run high, long-repressed ambitions surface and relationships collapse, the four main players deliver a masterclass in film acting, and there won’t be a dry eye in the house during the group’s final performance of Beethoven’s challenging and tremendously affecting Opus 131. All reviews by Mark Williams
A SONG FOR MARION After MARIGOLD HOTEL’s huge success, filmmakers are piling in to exploit the ‘silver screeners’ market, firstly with QUARTET (not to be confused with the far superior A LATE QUARTET, above) and now A SONG FOR MARION. Best known for the bleak thriller, LONDON TO BRIGHTON, director Paul Andrew Williams here reveals a flair for good humoured social drama with Vanessa Redgrave playing the cancer-stricken Marion determinedly enjoying her final months singing in a community choir run by a young teacher, Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton). Unfortunately, Marion’s husband (Terence Stamp), is just a little over-protective when Liz enters the choir in a national competition and his curmudgeonly tolerance wears thinner as the weeks roll by. But when the inevitable finally happens it’s his abiding love for Marion, plus a mutual loneliness shared with Liz that turn his life around. 19 April PRIVATE PEACEFUL (12A) Shifnal VH 01952 462787 19 April ANNA KARENINA (12A) Little Wenlock VH 01952 505888 19 April SKYFALL (12A) Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall 01981 240565 19 April THE SAPPHIRES (PG) Dilwyn Cedar Hall 01544 319363 19 April THE DECOY BRIDE (12A) Little Dewchurch VH 01432 840421 19 April ANNA KARENINA (12A) All Stretton VH 01694 723378 19 April HOPE SPRINGS (12A) Bosbury Parish Hall 01531 640415 20 April HOPE SPRINGS (12A) Cleobury Mortimer Parish Hall 01299 270830 20 April WAR HORSE (12A) Yarpole VH 01568 780253 20 April BEL AMI (2012) (15) Chapel Lawn VH 01547 530530 22 April RUBY SPARKS (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 23 April ANNA KARENINA (12A) Much Birch Community Hall 01981 580298 25 April SKYFALL (12A) Almeley VH 01544 327195 25 April SKYFALL (12A) Goodrich VH 01600 890609 25 April SKYFALL (12A) Bagley Sports & Social Club 07773 983963 26 April SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (12A) Weston-under-Penyard VH 01989 562390 26 April HUGO (2011) (U) Colwall VH 01684 540926 26 April HOPE SPRINGS (12A) Stoke Prior VH 01568 760326 26 April ANNA KARENINA (12A) Market Theatre, Ledbury 01531 631338 27 April THE ARTIST (PG) Moccas VH 07776 121956

BARBARA Multi award-winning writer/director Christian Petzold’s latest film has bleak echoes of THE LIVES OF OTHERS in reflecting how the human spirit can survive under a paranoid, over-arching political regime – something we adore here in Film Soc. Corner. Exiled to a rural hospital for unspecified misconduct in 1980s East Germany, Petzold’s favourite actress, Nina Hoss, plays a committed and gifted doctor whose steely resolve to defy the authorities is both tested and subtly eroded. The catalyst here is her immediate superior, André, played with similar, fearful reserve by Ronald Zehrfeld who although charged with snooping on her, finds himself emotionally conflicted. Meanwhile, under the twitching noses of the secret police, Barbara is planning her escape to the West, a scheme increasingly compromised by growing loyalties to both desperate patients and, of course, André. Tense, engaging and ultimately moving.

The Lion in Kington M ISTER Pernickety was encouraged by appreciative locals to visit the Lion in Kington, then discouraged by a gushing, cliché-ridden ‘review’ of the place in one of the local glossies, who think that a puff (often, as in this case, alongside a paid advertisement) is a review. Ironically, the intelligent punter is aware of this and tends to ignore such disingenuous journalism. There are regrettably few local organs who, like the Woolly One, have the integrity to publish honest, unbiased accounts of the eating places they have visited. Nevertheless, Mr P set off for lunch in Kington last month with a characteristically open mind. His Lovely Companion had either lost her appetite or had better things to do, so, as Mr P likes to combine a female view with his own, in order to reflect Nature’s own glorious gender diversity, he invited VB, a knowledgeable wine and food professional with clearly defined opinions, to accompany him. The Lion, in Bridge Street, is a handsome stone building, perhaps 17th Century, an old town boozer, which, until recently, had been allowed to degenerate. The new owner and chef, Gareth Clark, took it on, tidied it up (without overdoing it, like its name-sake in Leintwardine) and it reopened a year ago as a gastro-pub. Walking through a promising Georgian doorway, Mr P was disappointed by the plainness of the large bar within (which also serves as a restaurant overflow). The dining-room itself is low-ceilinged, though well-proportioned, if a little small. It is furnished with an odd and not especially charming hotch-potch of chairs and tables, and a strange collection of unattractive, badly hung pictures. Mr P’s Lovely Companion, had she been there, would have raised an eyebrow and curled a lip. The table to which Mr P and his guest were shown was Formica-topped on an iron pedestal, which, while no doubt practical, didn’t make an enjoyable surface from which to eat. On the table was a pair of white china salt and pepper pots in the form of cows, through whose nostrils the condiments were poured. Food was served on inoffensive, plain white crockery. The lunch menu was immediately interesting, and offered a number of less expensive dishes that could double up as either starters or main courses. (In this respect, the dinner menu is more conventional.) To begin with, VB ordered Root Vegetable and Cheddar Soup (£5), which she and Mr P agreed was exceptionally good and served with light, interesting wholemeal bread. Mr P chose a Platter of Chorizo, Salami, Jamon Cured Ham, Chutney and Bread (£7.95). The charcuterie was enjoyable, especially an excellent chorizo, perhaps a Pata Negra, putting one in mind of times spent in balmy, Balaeric taverns. It arrived with a lightly dressed rocket salad and quince jelly, not chutney, but that suited Mr P. It being the time of Lentern abstinence, with the platter of meats he drank only apple juice, which tasted good, pure and not as unsuitable as it sounds, while VB, with her soup, had a glass of Viala pinot grigio/gargenega (£11.95 a bottle). Although it tasted as if it had come from
22
a pre-opened bottle, she described it as light, clear and fruity. She followed this with a glass of Faustino Rivera Tinto – Rioja (from a good, imaginative selection by Andrew Darwin Fine Wines) which the list described as having ‘red berry aromas, underscored by notes of liquorice’. Although this produced a rueful smile in Mr P, in his abstemiousness he couldn’t confirm or deny it. VB said it was a little darker than she’d expected, but a good example of the genre. They were being served by a well-mannered, youthful woman who told them it was her first day in the job, which meant, pleasingly, that she hadn’t yet acquired the beastly habits of so many restaurant staff these days, even out in the sticks, who say, ‘There you go!’ as they plonk down plates, and order one to ‘Enjoy!’, pestering one afterwards with blunt enquiries about one’s views. An additional bonus was the music played throughout luncheon which was thoughtful, not over-obtrusive, and included a favourite Nick Drake track, with not a bar of heavy metal, rap or dub-step to invade Mr P’s equanimity. Feeling encouraged by their experience so far, VB and Mr P looked forward to their next courses. Ignoring his well-established belief that the meat of the Guinea fowl is depressingly short on flavour Mr P decided to give it another chance and ordered Roast Guinea Fowl Breast, New Potato and Mixed Leaf Salad with Pumpkinseed Dressing (£8.95). It was a good move; the chef had somehow managed to coax a stronger, more distinctive taste than usual from the (slightly meagre) strips of guinea fowl that topped a well-dressed salad. VB, feeling that it would give her a useful opportunity to test the chef’s core skills, ordered Beef Burger, Smoked Cheese, Jalapeno, Mixed Leaves and Hand Cut Chips (£8.95). A well made hamburger from quality beef can be a thing of great, if unsophisticated, deliciousness. The Lion’s looked promising, and real, but when it came to it, Mr P is sorry to report, it was a disappointment. It didn’t taste or smell fresh, and there was something odd about its herbal seasoning. To compound this, it was served in a sour-dough bun, which VB described as ‘ciabatta gone wrong’. She and Mr P agreed that the dish was unpleasant to the point of being inedible. It’s always a
greater let-down when one dud dish follows three good ones, and Mr P understands that it may simply have been bad luck that the chef let this one out of the kitchen, because it is clear that he’s generally good at his job. VB and Mr P approached their puddings feeling frankly disheartened, but were able, nevertheless, to appreciate a light mango cheesecake and a satisfactorily ‘rhubarby’ ice-cream with their coffee. They drove away with mixed feelings. The place lacked any special ambience, although, they agreed, some of the food they’d eaten had been thoroughly enjoyable. Perhaps it’s a restaurant that comes more into its own in the evenings; perhaps Mr P should give it another try. He’s not sure that it would merit a forty-five minute drive, although, if he lived in Kington, he would certainly go again. green door
The Green Slot This month Green Door invited Chris Blake of Community Energy Wales and The Green Valleys to write a guest slot. T appeared in my inbox like any other email, the sender’s name unfamiliar. “Spam” I muttered, barely pausing for thought. Then I saw the sent date: 1st April 2038. Even now I don’t know where it came from or how it got here. I am almost certain that it was a harmless prank. We all know that messages can’t get lost in the tangled mess of the Internet and then appear 25 years earlier. But I sometime daydream that it is what it claims to be – a transcript of an interview, given in 2038, and celebrating 25 years of a community energy project in rural Wales. I don’t know who these people are, but perhaps it might mean something to you. I hope so. INTERVIEWER: Huw, we are here to mark the anniversary of the community energy company that you and a small group of other residents started 25 years ago. Can you remember how it all began? HUW: In the pub on a wet and windy night. A group of us got talking about energy bills and fuel costs. I remember there was a lot of moaning my neighbours electricity bill had been over £1,500 for the year and we were shocked, outraged looking for someone to blame. Of course back then electricity was almost free– maybe 15p / kWh, I can’t remember the details – but cheap enough to use it without thinking. But the rise in prices was starting to be noticed, we could see that something would have to change. Now someone, Jo maybe, had read an article about generating electricity from wind and water and seeing that we had hills, rain and wind it seemed like it might be an idea to see if we could generate our own electricity – in fact just like my grandfather had done on the farm in the 1950s, before the grid got the valley. It seemed possible. Anyway, after a few more drinks the idea took hold. INTERVIEWER: What was your first project? HUW: The 30kW hydro turbine that you can see on Howell’s farm. Back then you could get a guaranteed price for every kwH you generated – maybe 25p or so – doesn’t seem much now but it was enough for us to raise the finance – some from round the village plus some loans, and a small grant I remember. It took a while to get it approved but after that it was built in 2 months and has been operating ever since. INTERVIEWER: I have heard that first scheme described as the catalyst for everything else that has happened in the village over the last quarter century. Do you know how much income it has generated since it started? HUW: We have lost some of the records from the early 2020’s (the floods in 2024) but for the anniversary we have been doing some calculations and we think it must be well over £2 million. Of course we never thought it would be so high but the Feed-in Tariff went up by inflation every year and the export price (what we could sell the electricity to the grid for) was rising every year in line with the global energy market – that is what made us the money. Well in the last few years, as we all know, that has been up to 35% a year. It wasn’t all profit – we had to pay for the scheme – about £180,000, I found the final bill last week,
I

and we had to repay loans, and of course rent to Howell, and some maintenance and repairs – the replacement electrics of course after the flood. INTERVIEWER: But you haven’t been just handing the cash out the community – you have been investing. HUW: That’s right.... but I will say in the early days there were a lot of people asking for cash to help them pay their energy bills. But we got together as a community and decided that we should invest in more energy generation and we got that just about right, yeah, think so [long pause]. So the second hydro was online in 2019. The income from the first scheme allowed us to pay for all the planning and feasibility work – we still used loan finance to build it. And by then, with energy prices soaring we had the confidence to build the wind turbine on the ridge. That has been running for almost 12 years now. I think even the sceptics have have accepted it now.
INTERVIEWER: Are you saying that everyone loves the turbine? HUW: Not all of them, maybe one day. But its hard not to love what it has done for the community. Even before the recent energy crisis, maybe 5 years ago, we were getting half a million a year in income. But with the incredible rise in fuel costs now we are only selling part of the energy to the grid – we are using most of it locally. Over the hill there are farms abandoned and the old tractors haven’t been used for a decade – first the spiralling cost and then the rationing. But in this valley there isn’t a farm that doesn’t have an electric utility vehicle. And of course we are powering the business centre – someone told me last week there are more small manufacturing businesses connected to our community grid than the rest of the county – I don’t know if that is true but it could well be. Now it is the cheap electric that brings them in, but using the hydro profits to provide business loans and mentor support was one of the smarter things we did. INTERVIEWER: Any regrets over 25 years? HUW: I only wish we had got more communities involved from the start – it breaks my heart to drive through the abandoned villages when I take the electric car drive back from town. Chris Blake
