ON’T you just hate dolphins and their sneering, know it all smiles. Just because they can swim a bit better than humans and do all those pointless tricks like jumping, echo location and balancing beach balls on their noses (or is that seals?) They think they are so superior. And by the way aren’t you bored silly with all these TV programmes about how clever animals are. Okay, it’s true that octopuses can open jars and use tools, that crows can solve complicated problems and make hooks out of sticks in order to catch inaccessible larvae. It may be also a fact that elephants appear to show love and empathy with one another, play games and make their own music and have been taught to paint. And don’t get me started on chimpanzees and their mathematical prowess and ability to learn sign language (which means they can only talk to deaf people). Not to mention their so called mastery of computers. As far as I’m concerned it all means nothing, we are still the master race. Could a crow build The Shard or the J.W. Marriot Hotel in Dubai? The J.W. is 77 bloody floors, 350 metres high. I can’t see a bunch of dumb crows being able to get that together! Could an octopus, for all its so called dexterity, drive a Formula 1 car and keep up with Jensen Button? I’d like to see it try. Could a chimpanzee write a hit song for Justin Bieber? Well, possibly, but on the other hand could it have written all the episodes of Coronation Street since 1963? No, ha ha, see I thought not. Just to demonstrate how blooming clever we humans are, take the case of the mechanism discovered off the coast of Antikythera by a bunch of sponge divers in 1900. Probably dating from 100BC, this extraordinary machine has been analysed recently with the use of x-rays and other equipment (eat your hearts out squirrels) and has been found to be a truly sophisticated early computer, possibly constructed by Archimedes that can mimic the movement of the earth, moon, sun and the planets with alarming accuracy, even taking into account things like the moon’s elliptical orbit. Easter Sermon T

HE Christian game-plan resembles a life-long obstacle race round a course of enticing vices, unattractive virtues and easy confessions; a cycle of sin and redemption drawn on by infinitely postponed punishments and rewards. It’s like Snakes and Ladders or Monopoly; probably it should be called Theopoly. The lives of the best players, the spiritual athletes, the martyrs and the saints seem to involve a lot of sadomasochism, so the game is probably not meant to be Fun. Your life, the temptations, the indulgences, the elusive spiritual profits, the self-flagellation, the pardons and the opportunities for penitence, self-hate and prayer are all marked out on the board. The aim of the game is to cast the weighted dice of sin, tell your beads and invest your treasure in heaven, preferably collecting a full set of the Stations of the Cross on the way round rather than gambling everything on a sauna club in Piccadilly and an escort agency at the Angel while in the immortal words of Tom Lehrer, “sliding down the razor-blade of Life”. Pope Benedict added a new pit-fall for the unwary player-believer. Along with Chance cards like “You have committed adultery GO TO HELL – GO DIRECTLY TO HELL - DO NOT COLLECT 200 Brownie Points” he instituted a new sin: “Excess C02 production: 5 aeons time-out in Purgatory”. Purgatory, the original sin-bin, is on the corner of the board where the Jail used to be. Jeremy Clarkson will be high on the list of the new sinners, though nowhere near as high as Bernie or the Sheik of Dubai, Clarkson being merely a Joker, not a King. The rules of Theopoly give you unlimited moral credit, a life-long licence to sin in this world, but you have to pay it all back in the next, when your whole life policy matures, so I got interested in what precisely might happen when you inevitably lose the race, (the Vatican Bank is immortal and always wins) and you reach the Pearly Gates, burdened not only with a huge moral debt from a familiar menu of infidelities, lies and acts of violence and spite, but troubled by this extra Green Sin that Pope Benedict has sprung on you. The Disney version of the Pearly Gates would be a dizzyingly kitsch repro-naissance facade, soaring into the sky like a gravity-free nightmare in roccoco pink pseudomarble. To a wide-screen graphic from a reject computer game of infinitely repeated pillars, pediments and arches has been added gratuitously naked child-porn angels flittering about with aerodynamically inadequate wings and no nappies. Cute. Splat. More modest gateways into the next world from less vanity-struck cultures would provide a wicket gate through which the English gentry could slip away wearing gardening clothes and a battered straw hat, or a cattle ranch entrance through which gauchos and cowboys could gallop into eternity, like in Rawhide, dust plumes flying up from their horse’s hooves. Vanishing points. However the real thing will be something much more pan-cultural, down-beat and tedious. “The Pearly Gate Departure Lounge” in generic Airport, Ferryport or Shopping Mall style; echoing concourse, concrete, steel, glass and plastic with garbled public announcements ricocheting off every surface, a place of vile alienation.

You join the back of a queue, you’re in line with everyone else; VIP fast-tracking is only for virgins, martyrs, hermits and saints. After what seems like an eternity, and probably is, you come face to face with one of the cloned St.Peters at the departure gate. He doesn’t even look up as he checks your details. He just presses a button on the touch-screen which tots up your sins and suddenly a whole lot of excess baggage turns up with your name on it. Its going round and round on the carousel in far more suitcases than you can ever have owned, and there are big stickers splashed across them marked EXCESS CO2. These are the sum of your proﬂigate western lifestyle; these are the material epitaphs for your jacuzzis, your foreign holidays, the solo car journeys, the visits to IKEA, the impulse buys and the thrown-away food, the shoes and the power tools you never used or wore. This is The Bill and you ain’t never going to be allowed onto any celestial plane until you’ve paid the full penance for every last kilo. Were you James Lovelock, David Monbiot or Cardinal Attenborgia? No. Have you any collateral to set against your carbon debt? A few forests you planted? No. Then you have no means of clearing your moral mortgage account, your credit is cancelled and your life foreclosed. This is the Final Reckoning. Border Agency gorillas have suddenly got you by the elbows and you’re being hustled onto a dingey ferry, to become another wretched bundle of deck cargo on the way to some place like Alcatraz or Devil’s island, a Purgatory set under leaden skies. Sleet falls. Here on your desert island you get your just deserts. Amidst the sand and the boulders you are required to plant enough trees to absorb all the CO2 that you squandered in your devil-may-care life of luxury back on Earth and then you just have to wait for the seasons to turn, turn, turn until they have processed all your CO2. “I did it my way” and “Non, je ne regrette rien” will be there FOC amongst your DIDs for when you need some ironic R’n’R. Only when the trees are fully grown and you have worn off the excess carbon around your soul will you be brought back to the Pearly Gate and given a ticket for the celestial plane. Unless of course you have other sins to atone for. Take a Chance card: Adultery, Amending the Holy Bible, Atheism, Blasphemy, Heresy, Cowardice, Drunkenness, Disrespect to your parents, Fornication, Masturbation, Gambling, taking Communion while doing any of the above, Jealousy, Murder, Pride, Sloth, Sorcery, Whoring and just in case - there’s always the Original One - just being born - and there are more. Surprisingly I couldn’t google a complete ofﬁcial list of all the grosser life-style possibilities aka sins that the Vatican has imagined for us in such loving detail over the centuries - there wasn’t even a full menu over in Wikipedia. So .... “Is that what you meant, Mr.Pope, Benedict, sir?” But by then he’d retired to a Palladian Palazzo on Sunset Boulevard, and I’d got a couple of massage parlours on Park Lane and a casino on Mayfair. FIENNES, AND DANDY

Given that they must understand the process better than almost anyone else, it’s perhaps surprising that few actors make the transition from before the camera to behind it. Yet of those that do, only Clint Eastwood, Ben Stiller and George Clooney stand out as consistently successful exemplars, but perhaps to that brief list, we can now add Ralph Fiennes whose THE INVISIBLE WOMAN is now on release. And enabling us to make a valid comparison between his purely thespian and directorial efforts, he also currently stars in Wes Andersen’s latest, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. I r o n i c a l l y, T H E I N V I S I B L E W O M A N h a s h i m playing Charles Dickens who of course wrote GREAT EXPECTATIONS Fiennes’ last film but one in which his Magwitch as an actor was not entirely persuasive and yet here his portrayal of the highly energetic, charming yet disloyal literary titan is both credible and beguiling. It’s basically an account his not-so-secret relationship with Ellen ‘Nelly’ Tiernan, a modest actress carried out despite the anxieties of her impresario mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) and the resigned humiliations of his wife (the wonderful Joanna Scanlon, t.v’s THE THICK OF IT and GETTING ON). As Nelly, up-and-comer Felicity Jones makes a decent fist of the trembling lipped ingénue whose unfamiliar passion soon overcomes her understandable caution, although it’s Fiennes who really demonstrates that despite the stilted linguistics and manners of the age, emotional complexity can still flourish… but then he did have the advantage of telling everyone else what to do and presumably how to do it. In fact although his character is completely different, his role of the sharp-witted concierge, Gustave H, in GRAND BUDAPEST is equally suffused with contrasting sentiments. Many Wes Anderson fans, including this one, were disappointed with the relative feyness of his last, MOONRISE KINGDOM, but this is a return to the hectic eccentricity and visual fabulousness of 2001’s ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Fundamentally it’s about Gustave’s lobby boy, Zero Moustafa (newcomer Tony Revolori) who progresses from naïve apprentice to trusted accomplice, the guile of both considerably tested when one of Gustave’s most favoured guests (a heavily camouflaged Tilda Swinton) bequeaths him a priceless painting, thus arousing the suspicions of Edward Norton’s detective Henckels. Their ensuing adventures propel the story along at a furious pace involving numerous roguish characters, many played by Anderson regulars including Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson. Glorious fun, in which Fiennes perhaps actually benefits from not having to worry about directorial duties and instead just letting rip with his best performance for years. Ponte Vecchio, Hereford

WHILE ago, Mister Pernickety and his younger son, Master Pernickety, set out to review John Spice’s Restaurant at the Green Dragon in Hereford. It turned out be one of the most challenging dining experiences of Mr P’s life so far (with their findings published in a past Woolly Organ). A few weeks ago, Mr P once again went to meet his son near Hereford, after an eight month absence in India and Tanzania. The young Pernickety looked as if he needed feeding up, prompting Mr P to propose that they seek sustenance at once, while taking the opportunity to review a Hereford eating house more amenable than John Spice’s. Mr Pernickety has frequently grumbled about the scarcity of Family-run Italian Restaurants in the Marches and, anxious to find if such a thing still exists, decided that his son should fill his concave belly at a place self-billed as precisely that. Ponte Vecchio, in Bridge Street, Hereford, although broadly Italian-looking is not especially inviting from the outside, but Mr P has always made allowances for restaurants of a traditional European nature. The place looked less appealing from the inside, with bright lights, hard mean floor tiles and not much inspiration from any decorative addition around the walls, made all the more cheerless by a marked lack of hustle & bustle, which should be a principal characteristic of the F-RIR. That evening there were just two other punters in. The most engaging element of the interior was the youngish proprietor, who beamed with Italian charm (while speaking English like a native). Mr P found that he recognised him, and he turned out to be the son of the proprietor of a former restaurant, Firenze, in Commercial Road, which, sadly, closed seven years ago, and which Mr P recalls happily as the last authentic family run Italian establishment he had encountered in the Marches – a place where his offspring had enjoyed its proper oven baked pizzas, and which he’d enjoyed for its genuine Italian cuisine. One of the sons of the family went on to launch Ponte Vecchio, the original of which (Mr P’s better-informed readers will know) is in Firenze, thereby retaining at least a little continuity. However, charming though the son is, Mr P sensed that there is less of a commitment on the part of his immediate family, added to which the young proprietor is not himself a carnivore – and these can be serious obstacles to overcome in the running of a traditional Italian family restaurant. As a result, Mr Pernickety is sad to report, the dinner he and Master P consumed was less than special. For a start, Mr P wanted to eat veal, and Italian restaurants are about the only public places where this is possible in Britain. Over the last few decades veal has had a strange history in England. As a result of some beastly unkind methods employed by ‘continental’ farmers to produce calf meat of a politically incorrect and ultra pale hue, the meat went out of favour in GB, but, quite irrationally, so did the perfectly normal and humanely produced, natural ‘rose’ veal, with the result that the market for it more or

less dried up. As it happens, the Ludlow Food Centre’s excellent butcher, John Brereton does still offer veal in several good cuts for much of the year, and Mr P has been happy to produce, on occasion, a Blanquette de Veau which has had his dinner guests swooning. Mr Brereton also offers well-prepared veal escalopes – a firm favourite of Mr P’s. But at Ponte Vecchio Mr P asked for them in vain. The only escalope option was that of chicken, and since most of the chickens in Herefordshire come from one of those horrid factory units that can produce a fully-grown, cotton-wool fowl in a few weeks, Mr Pernickety usually avoids those that haven’t categorically been allowed the childhood freedom to run around and catch early worms on grassy hillsides. On this occasion, though, committed to a scallopine, he had to settle for the chicken variant. It had been traditionally cooked, but, it seemed, somewhat earlier in the day – or week. It lacked the fresh lightness that it should have had; Mr P was disappointed. His strapping young issue had opted for Risotto Fiorentino, a sizable tump of Arborio rice with spinach and crumbled goat’s cheese; Master P failed to stay the course, but being of a kindly disposition, refused to judge it harshly. They both enjoyed the bottle of Montepulciano recommended by the owner, but for Mr P, the hunt for a pleasingly authentic, and good quality FRIR goes on. On a happier note, Mr Pernickety recently took his Lovely Companion to the fair City of Aquae Sulis, to indulge her weakness for Decorative Antiques (which might, incidentally, explain her attachment to Mr P), on show at the Pavilion there. After an hour or so flogging around many stalls of vintage ephemera, they sought sustenance and happened, very happily, on the Firehouse Rotisserie in John Street, Bath. Early this year a housing initiative that I have been involved in called Home Presteigne invited the architect, Jonathan Hines to visit and talk about a new Passivhaus development that has been approved in Herefordshire. The proposed site will be less densely packed with houses than usual, with less emphasis on car parking. That means there will be more green space, including space to grow food, thus complementing the existing rural community. A key beneﬁt of Passivhaus is the energy efﬁciency, with expected savings of 80% on heating bills, and this is down to u value standards, air tightness, elimination of thermal bridging and orientation of all houses within 15 degrees of south, to make the most of solar gain. Community engagement has helped to shape the project, resulting in features such as a cycle path link, winding lanes, retained native hedgerows and car free space for children to play. The houses are designed simply for contemporary living, with good daylight, quality of construction and emphasis on comfort of living, including a ventilation system that keeps in 90% of heat whilst maintaining a high standard of fresh air circulation. You may think these houses sound very expensive to build and therefore to buy or rent, but actually the whole idea is based on simple quality, using super-insulated panels that are locally made from local materials and no “bling.” In this way it is possible to build fairly inexpensive homes that will, of course, be exceedingly cheap and also green to live in. Spring Greens Fair is on the 3rd and 4th of May this year, in the wonderful grounds at the Court of Noke. It was brilliant last year, with everything from sustainable theatre to sustainable woodcraft, blacksmithing, basketry, pond management, pizzas fresh from the earth oven and much more. A lovely event.

At a global level the Chief Executive at APPLE, Tim Cook, told climate sceptics amongst Apple share holders, who questioned the company’s environmental efforts, that Apple’s burgeoning green policy made full economic sense. He added: “We do a lot of things for reasons besides profit motive. We want to leave the world better than we found it.” Cook finished by saying that if anyone disagreed with that approach, they should “get out of the stock”. The economic angle is interesting when you consider that Insurance payouts relating to the recent floods here in the UK are expected to reach £1.1bn, according to new figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The cost of these latest flood-related claims has already hit £446m. Richard Branson of Virgin has also weighed in on the subject of climate change, saying he “wholeheartedly” agreed with Tim Cook at Apple, and he’s actually doing some great carbon neutral stuff on his islands in the Caribbean and just as importantly speaking up about it. I wrote a while back about Pelamis wave power and can now update this story because recently Pelamis have been awarded a £1.4m project from The Energy Technologies Institute to fund development work and to enhance the cost-effectiveness of wave energy converter arrays in UK waters. The funding will support the first phase of work this year ahead of a larger demonstration programme if the results prove encouraging. Gregory Barker, Minister of State at the Department of Energy & Climate Change, made the announcement at the recent RenewableUK Wave & Tidal Conference in London. And finally good news for people who eat. I heard from Lin, who has been campaigning to “Save our Seeds” and she has emailed me to say that the EU has just voted against the new legislation that would have put the future of our seed heritage in the hands of large corporates.
