Frank’s Babies

A

LOT of people have come up to me in the last week to rave about the Dutch band, ‘My Baby’ who came to Wales and played in The Dukes, The Vaults in Bishop’s Castle, The Builth Heart of Rock & Blues Festival and last, but not least our very own Full Circle Festival. You didn’t come ‘cos it was raining on Saturday morning? You idiots, you missed the best party of the year. Anyway the story all begins with Frank Sutherland, the crazy Dutch guitar nerd. I first met Frank in the mid 70’s in Amsterdam. He was famous for three things. 1. Coming round your house and talking for so long that you could literally go to bed for a few hours, wake up and he’d still be by your bedside chattering away. 2. Eating you out of house and home. His technique was this. He’d come to dinner, eat very slowly talking all the time and generally spraying the place with food particles, then when you’d all finished, he’d say “by the way, can I finish that pot of potatoes on the table?” “By the way can I finish that lasagne that’s on top of the stove?” etc, etc 3. Playing guitar for days and days on end. Achingly beautiful Spanish pieces, hot stomping folk blues finger picking, endless funk, James Brown style jams. All in his own immitable style. There were some great guitar players around at the time in Amsterdam - but perhaps the only one who rivalled Frank for weirdness was Ton van Bergeyk. Like Frank, he had no time for social convention or, it must be said, personal hygiene, but boy, could he play ragtime. The biggest cheese in the world of finger pickers at the time was Stephen Grossman who ran Kicking Mule records and who had invented his own guitar notation for writing down ragtime. Ton sent ‘The Great Grossman’ a Christmas card with an arrangement of one of his tunes scrawled on the back in Grossman notation. Stephan wrote back “If you can actually play this piece, I will sign you up”. Ton got a five record deal out of it! You can hear him and Stephen playing together on You Tube Stefan Grossman & Ton Van Bergeyk “Struttin’ Rag http://youtu.be/bj2xD2iFwJg In fact the whole of this editorial will be a bit more fun if you look up the various You Tube links as we go. Frank and I used to get the train to Den Hague to practice at Ton’s flat that was an Alladin’s Cave of old ragtime records, 50s musicals and weird guitars, including the one he played that was made out of ebony (a wood no one has ever used for a guitar either before or since!) The flat also contained a shower room full of cockroaches, a lot of vintage glamour magazines and a truck-load of unwashed plates and kitchen equipment that slowly took over the flat until only a tiny space by the front door was left at which point Ton moved out and that was the end of our playing together. Frank meanwhile had enlarged his sphere of influence to include Wales. I’m not sure if he’d ever been abroad before, since arriving in Holland as a child from Maluka in Indonesia. He still lived with his parents and a very disturbed brother in a small high-rise on the outskirts of Amsterdam. I once visited him there and was astonished to meet the brother who ‘Red Indian style’ walked everywhere backwards in order to throw people who might be following him off the scent. Frank actually played at the second Sheep Music in Presteigne in 1993 in the back garden of The Bull. It was one of the only times I saw him appear in Small Ads 4 public even though he was guru to a good few Dutch bands and had taught guitar to half the Sam’s page 6 players in the country. Throughout the 70s he was deeply involved with The House Band, an Amsterdam funk band. You Tube Houseband Funk it Up http://youtu.be/Uozs2kgOg88 Art 8 During that time, Frank and myself were obsessed by 70s American soul and funk James Art workshops 12 Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Al Green, Anne Peebles and bizzarely, a Red Indian Cinema 16 band called Redbone. These were all to reappear as influences on My Baby 35 years later. The last time Frank came to Wales was in the mid-90s accompanied by a girl from New Dance 18 Zealand called Jeannie and her kid, but by that time he’d had used up all Presteigne’s Food 20 goodwill and he left in a huff. I heard later that he was teaching lots of pupils in Amsterdam, Music 22 including a whole family who all played guitar. That family were the Van Dijks who were a sort of Dutch Osmonds. Dad had been a doctor out in The Maluccas and had taught the Music workshops 35 family lots of Indonesian folk songs. You Tube van dijck band - toma http://youtu.be/08dVenues 39 qvYy7ODQ Frank became obsessed with teaching the family guitar, spurred on no doubt Band directory 40 by the fact that the two girls, one 10 years old and the other 14, turned out to be talented multi-instrumentalists and the elder brother, a great drummer. Eventually the girls split with Theatre 42 dad and became the Van Dijk Sisters and had a serious crack at country music style pop Word 46 stardom in Europe. However this was ultimately unsatisfying and they then started to drift Green pages 50 towards doing more funky stuff with an outfit called Souldiers. You Tube The Souldiers Down on Me http://youtu.be/igOCV_tUYxo This band had a guitarist called Daniel De Comp therapies 52 Vries who was surprise, surprise the son of Jeannie, the New Zealand girl who Frank had We take no brought to Wales. Eventually the funky stuff led to their suddenly remembering all those riffs responsibility for Frank had taught them when they were young. Stripped down to a three-piece, they went the veracity of the to Micky Smid’s studio in Amsterdam. Micky is the son of Peter Smid from the Houseband information herein and an old aquaintance of Franks and so the circle was complete. Pete Mustill I first heard the demos of their new stuff when Micky sent them to me a couple of years Mayfield, Stapleton, ago and I couldn’t believe my ears, it was Redbone, it was Anne Peebles, it was Sly, it was Nr Presteigne, Powys Ry Cooder all rolled into one but somehow with a very modern and delightful twist. You can LD8 2LW hear and see them in action on You Tube My Baby - Mad Mountain Thyme Tel: 01544 260051 http://youtu.be/41MimnGxIwo My Baby - Singin in Chains http://youtu.be/vf8iyWp7CGk Email: info@broadsheep.com But the only thing you can’t see on You Tube is Frank. Like the Red Indian brother, he was Website: www.broadsheep.com there, but he left no trace.

OR many years now the nation’s large-scale farmers have been getting a rough shake in the press. True, they have been drawing fat subsidies to provide us with cheap food. But no wonder. Without them we would long ago have starved. After all, the u-boats cruise our shores, and the fact that few have been sunk lately merely shows that they are on the up. We are indeed lucky that we have such enormously efficient farmers. Some Jeremiahs and Moaning Minies say that the farmers are quite lucky too, what with EU subsidies. And (they further moan) while non-farmer businesses pay business rates, and ordinary citizens pay council tax, farmers pay no property taxes at all, except on their houses. Relax. Next time an eighteen-wheeler full of sheep or feed comes thundering past your house on a lane built for horses and carts, let that warm feeling rise. Certainly you are paying for the roads the farmers are using but not paying for. This is not, however, a sign that the farmers have the country over a barrel. It is proof, if proof were needed, that we and the farmers are in this together. They use our tax money and sell us their food. It is the Agricultural Contract. What could be fairer? This close relationship goes far, far beyond food, of course. You will have noticed lately that the Russians are getting a bit heavy about natural gas. Our farmers have the answer. Those Russkies shall not pass, they cry in sturdy voices, building huge anaerobic digesters. So deep is their patriotism that they are likely to be growing vast fields of maize to throw into the digesters. This will produce splendid amounts of energy, massively subsidised by taxes lesser mortals, equally patriotic, will be thrilled to pay: the Agricultural Contract again. We will all be saving the planet together, except of course those parts of the planet that might otherwise have eaten the food crops grown where the maize for the digesters now grows. Pollution of rivers? Pah! There are regulations about where the digestate, the fertile but toxic byproduct of AD, can be thrown. It is almost certain that these regulations will be observed, or at least as many of them as can be seen through the smoked-glass windows of a Range Rover Sport. And then there are wind farms. One wind farm replaces a huge amount of the money that the farmer is spending on fine wines. I beg your pardon, a huge amount of the money that the government is spending on hunter-killer submarines to keep the seaways clear for Qatari natural gas, whose energy wind farms will eventually replace, or not.... Sarcasm, your Honour? Surely not. I do here swear that I believe passionately in the Roast Beef, no, uneconomic, Roast Chicken, no, it’ll fall to bits, Chicken McNuggets of Old England. Long life and success to the farmer! Though for some reason my nostrils detect the faint aroma of burning ricks. Llywelyn ap Twhir

BLUE RUIN, LOCKE Locke and the return of the Road Movie Some of the best stuff to hit the silver screen have been Road Movies. As the term suggests, most of these had a narrative thrust that squarely relied on a car journey – think TWO LANE BLACK TOP, THELMA AND LOUISE, EASY RIDER or the towering drug’n’petrol fest that is VANISHING POINT. But many equally memorable genre examples simply involve a lot of time spent in cars, often and most wonderfully, being driven fast and dangerously. I’m thinking BULLITT of course, but also Walter Hill’s noirish THE DRIVER and my all-time favourite, John Frankenheimer’s swansong, RONIN. In recent years Road Movies have become scarcer. But the wine-country travelogue SIDEWAYS qualified, as did buddy-cop drama, END OF WATCH and of course DRIVE. But this month two have arrived simultaneously, and you can even see them back-to-back in Ludlow: LOCKE and BLUE RUIN. Of the pair, LOCKE, at an economical 85 minutes is the purest for it takes place almost entirely inside a BMW X5 – a ‘Chelsea Tractor’ to those of us who loathe them – driven by its sole visible actor, Tom Hardy (Heathcliffe in ITV’s WUTHERING HEIGHTS). As the eponymous LOCKE he’s traveling to the birth of his illegitimate child by a woman he pities (Olivia Coleman at her neediest), and witnessed solely through mobile phone conversations, his life unravels spectacularly during his journey. Further detail would spoil its unlikely fascination but LOCKE is truly original and compelling drama. BLUE RUIN isn’t quite so original – it echoes the Coen brothers at their bloodiest – but equally gripping. The title refers to the rusty Pontiac which Dwight, a Blue Ruin scrofulous vagrant, calls home somewhere on the Virginia coastline. Brilliantly played by the little-known Macon Blair as a nervous, quick-witted scavenger, he learns that the man who killed his parents has just left prison. In short order he packs and fires-up the Pontiac, locates the newly released culprit and, almost to his own surprise, dispatches him in an amateurish if grisly manner. With wonderfully unexpected, often darkly comedic twists, having wreaked his initial revenge, Dwight methodically changes his appearance and embarks on an increasingly twitchy but violent game of cat-andmouse with the red-neck family of the man he’s just killed. Although the former has solid form as a screenwriter, both films are by newbie directors, Steven Knight (LOCKE) and Jeremy Saulnier (BLUE RUIN), which gives us much hope for film-making’s future. But equally encouraging is the fact that more seasoned figures are still producing works of wonder and ingenuity, such as the deliciously quirky, 3-D child prodigy saga T.S. SPIVET from writer/director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (AMELIE), and Jonathan (SEXY BEAST) Glazer’s UNDER THE SKIN, which despite creepy sci-fi nuances, almost qualifies as a Road Movie, albeit aboard a van.

Tram Inn, Eardisley

Dining Room, Tram Inn

L

20

ONG before that popular hate-figure, Doctor Beeching wielded his knife about Britain’s rail network, a horse-drawn tramway – cutting edge technology at the time – was established in 1816 between Hay-onWye and the village of Eardisley, bringing coal from Brecon and providing, no doubt, a useful link between the isolated villagers and the fleshpots of Hay. Fifty years later, the tramway was replaced by the Hereford, Hay & Brecon Railway, which thrived for another century or so until the demon Doctor excised all the railway lines from Hay to Brecon, Pontrilas, Kington and Hereford. Like many sentimental Englishman, Mr Pernickety finds that thoughts of these abandoned, mouth-wateringly picturesque branch lines and their defunct junctions bring tears to his eyes. But moving on to more positive aspects of the early 21st Century, it is doubtful that 200 years ago the village inn could have produced half such an enjoyable dinner as it did for Mr Pernickety and his lovely companion last month. To celebrate the first arrival of the tram from Hay – or possibly later, to commemorate its decommissioning – the village’s 15th century hostelry was renamed The Tram Inn. Although the large and beautiful windows in the dining room of this fine rustic boozer suggest that additions were made at a high point in the Georgian era, it shows pleasing signs of having existed as an inn for many centuries before that. Mr P had last visited the place some ten years before, when, while obviously the same building, it had a run-down, unloved air about it. Mr P had been invited to join a largish gang of fuddies and duddies who were meeting up for a communal curry – a curry, as it turned out, of unidentifiable meat and such mildness as to cause minimal discomfort the following morning (which was the only positive thing to be said about it). That event left Mr P with no incentive to return, until recently, after a steady flow of favourable views of the place had begun to reach him. On the way there, Mr P was told by a lofty friend that he should expect a plate piled high with chips. With this disappointing intelligence ringing in their ears, Mr P and his Lovely Companion carried on to The Tram. However, as soon as they walked in, the lofty friend’s warning looked ill-judged; there was an immediate air of a real pub whose owners knew what they were doing (which means, among other things, not sending out plates of food piled eight inches high). The bar in the old beamy part of the building had a good tiled floor and inviting scrub-top tables. It offered an exemplary selection of the area’s best ales (Ludlow, Three Tuns, Wye Valley) and was buzzing with the beautiful sound of animated conversation – no music, no fruit machines nor any monosyllabic footer players on Sky. The dining-room where Mr P and the LC sat down to dine was a handsome room – high-ceilinged with timber wainscoting below pleasing dark red hued walls. There are a few broadly appropriate prints and pictures on the walls, although during the course of dinner, a bearded individual of artistic demeanour came in to remove an inoffensive modern landscape hanging over the LC’s

head, and replaced it with a far less enjoyable, frankly crass painting of a woman with yellow hair and a red frock, which made the LC sniff a little. Also distractingly ungainly and out of place were a number of very shiny chrome wall lights. On the other hand, an attractive stained glass lobby looks original, as well as the two beautiful windows at each end of the room. Mr P felt, generally, that it was a pleasure to be sitting in such a place. As they ordered their food, he and the LC felt any negative feelings that their lofty friend might have aroused fading away. The LC chose Honey glazed goats’ cheese with roasted red pepper, butternut and toasted pistachio salad. She loved all the various tastes and textures it offered, all setting one another off, while Mr P was well pleased with his Confit of Duck, a fat, juicy thigh, cooked just right, which made a substantial but not overfilling starter. These arrived quickly, too, brought by the landlord with a polite muttered, ‘Bon Apetit’ and no order to ‘Enjoy!’ Perhaps he is a regular reader of Mr P’s reviews and has taken note. Also promptly served was a jug of water, along with bottle of Rioja, young but with a good peppery flavour (at £15.95, one of a small sensible range from £12.95). For his main course, Mr P had a special of the day – an Individual Fish Pie with Hake, Trout, Crayfish Tails, Queen Scallops & a Cheesy Breadcrumb Top, served with spring greens and haricot verts. The fishy flavours were good and strong, and the crust, crusty. If anything there was a little too much of it, and Mr P believes the punter should always be left feeling that he wished there were just a little more, leaving him room for the next round. The LC ordered a 28 day hung sirloin, with the instruction that it be cooked ‘bleu’. She was disappointed that it arrived ‘medium rare’, though Mr P found his thumb twitching upwards as he sank his teeth into a mouthful. But the LC was complimentary about the accoutrements, delighted that the onion rings (often viewed as a pub food joke) were sweet and deliciously crisply battered. She had chips, too (though not a great tump of them, as the lofty one had predicted), and was delighted to find they still had their skins on. Her pudding – Iced Nougat Parfait – she liked but felt she could have done with less and without a couple of dollops of cream plopped on the plate in an arbitrary sort of way. Mr P enjoyed his mouthful of it, though, as well as the Warm Pecan & Caramel Tart he had ordered. As he guzzled the last of the Rioja, he and the

LC agreed that they had just eaten a very good dinner, malgré her minor cavils. The pub was everything Mr P feels a pub should be, a level meeting ground for locals of every background, in unpretentious, honest surroundings, serving interesting, very well cooked food. The gardens behind the pub were a joy, beautifully tended and planted, not the usual litter of fag-ends, chip packets and trampled grass that pub gardens so often become. There was handsome Pavilion for the incurable fumeurs, as well as three well-kept boules pistes, all in full use by several local teams, including two very jolly little Welshmen with whom Mr P used to get drunk years ago. The people who run The Tram Inn appear completely to understand the essential raison d’etre of an English country pub, and Mr P wishes there were more like it. The landlord looks quite young and energetic, so with luck it will stay like it is for some time to come, affording Mr P several more opportunities for future visits. O

NCE, long ago, home to our ancestors might have been a long valley, with a deep forest and high hills and it would have reached as far as the horizon, shrinking at night to a central fire and the familiar faces gathered around. In those days, food was what people caught or grew and shelter was what they built for themselves. To survive, the tribe had to work together. These traditions have not disappeared. The origin of Bayanihan, for example, can be traced to a tradition in Philippine towns where community members help a family move to a new place by actually carrying the house there. They use a strong frame of bamboo poles to lift it up, with a man positioned at the end of each pole. In modern society, Bayanihan has also been adopted as a term that refers to a local civil effort to resolve national issues. The Amish barn raising is a tradition that is still kept today. The community pulls together to build a barn for a family or farm. A leader with experience and skills is chosen to manage the whole thing, whilst other elders lead work teams that include younger people taking part for the first time. Local farmers and foresters produce much of the timber for the barn and building skills are passed from generation to generation. It’s nothing like a bunch of builders from Brum turning up with a pile of breezeblocks and their diggers. A Talkoot is the Finnish expression for a gathering of friends and neighbours who set out to repair a community building or put homes or gardens in order for the summer and in Norway, the Dugnad is associated with outdoor spring cleaning and gardening and building in housing co-operatives. “Dugnadsånd” is translated as “the spirit of will to work together for a better community” which is regarded as a typical Norwegian thing to have. Mink’a is a type of traditional communal work in the Andes carried out for the benefit of the whole community and still practiced in indigenous communities in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile. Naffīr (‫ )ريفن‬is an Arabic word for the same idea, in which a group is recruited through family networks, in-laws and village neighbours for some particular purpose such as building a house or providing help during the harvest season. And so it goes on from country to country and culture to culture. People have always done stuff together. Important stuff. “Home Presteigne” is a cooperative organisation for housing. It was registered in 2013 as a Community Benefit Society, so that local people could plan and develop sustainable homes that are affordable to buy or rent and live in, based on local incomes.

50

Home Presteigne has been working hard to create a serious framework in which people of the town might take an active role in the whole process of affordable housing, whether they need homes or whether they simply wish to support. An event to launch Home Presteigne is being held on July 9th, at St Andrew’s Hall, Presteigne. The evening event starts at 7.30pm and the guest speaker is Jenny March from LILAC Housing Coop in Leeds.

Jenny will tell the story of how a group of people in Leeds built 20 homes with allotments and a common house on the site of an old school. This project was completed in September 2013. All of the homes are now occupied and are the subject of a study by the Department of Energy and Climate Change to get more specific data about just how much money is saved on fuel bills with new and super insulated construction methods. The evening will continue with a presentation of the results of the Presteigne Housing Questionnaire, and a Q&A session to talk about what might be possible next. www.home-presteigne.co.uk or look out for posters.
