USED to be a avid fan of cookery shows on the telly. The wonderful Keith Floyd, the roly-poly Ainsley Harriott, puppyish Jamie, cartoon Nigella and Two (posh) Fat Ladies I watched them all. Then there was the dark period when we got ‘the satellite’ and I could late night, binge on such horrors as Diners Drive-Ins and Dives, Nadia G’s Bitchin’ Kitchen and my favourite, until someone told me it was staged, Mystery Diners, with its hidden cameras and unrepentant baddies drinking all the restaurants profits. These days I have to admit I have lost interest in Rick Stein’s gentle bonhomie and Greg and John’s lousy scripts “Cooking doesn’t get harder than this – yawn.”

However I have discovered that you and I can watch all of Anthony Bourdain’s - Parts Unknown on FreeVee. To say that this is the best food programme ever is an understatement but the shocking thing about it is that Anthony committed suicide in a Paris Hotel Room in 2018. David Klion wrote that he “made it possible to believe that social justice and earthly delights weren’t mutually exclusive, and he pursued both with the same earnest reverence.”

Anthony grew up in a well to do Jewish/ Catholic family in New Jersey. He first started working in kitchens while studying at Vassar and it was while working at the Lobster Pot in Princetown that he fell in love with cooking. He graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in ’78 and from there he went on to run various restaurant kitchens in New York City. Eventually in 1998, Bourdain became executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles but then in 2000 his book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly became a New York Times bestseller and led to his first series on TV. A lifelong fan of Punk Rock he claimed that anybody who put on Elton John in his kitchen would be immediately sacked!

Early days

Parts Unknown is a mighty piece of work consisting of 7 series of 8 episodes each which zigzags all over the world. I will flag up some of the highlights in case you want to dip in and out.

Series 1 In 2013 with a slight loosening of The Generals grip on the country Anthony went Myanmar and got immersed in the food, the politics and even managed to find a Burmese Punk Band. The series went on to feature Libyan rappers, mayhem in the Congo and one of my personal favourites two large Canadian restaurant owners who subject Anthony to more food and drink in one week than the rest of us will probably see in a year.

Series 2 Anthony visits Copenhagen, despite insisting he has no time for clean, well ordered countries with no social problems, and spends most of his time with the boss of Noma rated at that time the best restaurant in the world. Other highlights of Series Two include an episode about a very empty and crumbling Detroit and a very manic visit to Tokyo.

Series 3 He visits Lyon where he is excited and deferential in the company of the grand

old man of French Cuisine Paul Bocuse who treats him to some of Haute Cuisine’s greatest hits including a chicken stuffed with truffles enclosed in an inflated pigs bladder. In Russia he drinks literally gallons of vodka while asking lots of unwelcome political questions. Then in Thailand he admits that he used to only see the world in Black and White until visually and taste wise this country turned everything Technicolor.

Series 4 One of the exotic highlights of Series 4 is Zanzibar but perhaps the most interesting is Massachusetts where Anthony spent his formative kitchen years. He readily admits to having the time of his life in Princetown, over indulging in sex, drugs and rock n roll. However the present day area is rife with a chronic drug problem caused by prescription of opioid pain relievers like OxyContin which is leading people with mild pain symptoms to opium dependency and heroin addiction. Series 5 The two best of this lot are Madagascar and Beirut but the one Anthony loves best is meeting his hero Iggy Pop who believe it or not lives, not in a seedy New York hotel, but in sunny Miami!

Series 6 Okinawa, Charleston – South Carolina and then Borneo and Anthony revisits the Iban tribe up the Skrang River in the jungle. It’s a good example of how far he is prepared to go in his pursuit of genuine local experiences. In this episode he gets a very painful tattoo and (look away now vegetarians) takes the lead role in butchering a live pig!

Series 7 His Chicago episode is mostly set in a venerable old brown wood bar whose Landlord has a studio downstairs where he paints his customers who include the students from 2nd city Improvisational Comedy Troupe that spawned 90% of the best American comedians. Other highlights are his discovery that Manila is the home of most of the world’s most successful cover bands and that Cologne has a sister city Dusseldorf that they are barely on speaking terms with and their rivalry even extending to the beer they drink. Quite which of his many demons – hatred of fame, drug and alcohol abuse, tempestuous love life, pessimism about world politics – led him to take his own life, he leaves the world, particularly of travel and food journalism, a much poorer place.

Anybody seen Klaatu?

WHAT would YOU have done, I wonder, had YOU seen a UFO hovering over your back garden? Warn the neighbours? Phone the newspapers? Hide in the cellar? Or maybe you’d do what Spike Milligan’s mother did on hearing that ‘we are at war with Germany’ - having taken a dim view of the word ‘we’, by the way - rush into the garden and get the washing in? Well, that was MY dilemma.

It was a sultry autumn night after a sultry sort of day, a touch foggy and a full moon. Season mists, mellow fruitfulness - you know the kind of thing. It was time for bed, a steaming mug of cocoa, warm sheets and a snuggle-up with the collected thoughts of Martin Heidegger. But then I saw it: a UFO. Large as life and right above my veg plot.

There were four white lights, arranged in the shape of a parallelogram. Whatever the lights were attached to was impossible to say. Though stationary they seemed to be pulsating, possibly humming, hinting that at any moment they might be on the move. That was the sight that greeted me through my bedroom window. What to do? I stood transfixed, excited and terrified in equal measure. This was no weird hallucination. There it was, plain as pikestaff: a UFO.

Had you been there, it’s a safe bet that sooner or later you’d have asked the same question that’s been a recurring theme in philosophy for millennia: can we, dare we, trust our senses? A question that can be worded differently, more abstractly [and philosophers, of course, are in their element with abstractions]: Is appearance the same as reality? Yes, sooner or later the tricky notion of ‘reality’ is going to appear on the scene. And for good reason. Philosophy, at its heart, is about seeking the truth, identifying what is ‘real’ and separating it from what might be just ‘appearance’.

But back to our UFO.

After ten minutes the lights disappeared and curiosity having overcome discretion I ventured into the garden. No little green aliens to be seen, no scorch-marks on the ground. Nothing. However, one thing was clear: this was no UFO, just a strange trick of the light. The full moon, somehow or other, had caused parts of a nearby electricity pole to glow. As soon as the autumn mist obscured the face of the moon, the lights seemed to go out.

This was some years ago. Although alarming at the time it prompted me to revisit my reading around the vast topic of ‘appearance and reality’. It’s a well-trodden path, of course, so no problem knowing where to start. Several long-dead chums came to the rescue - Plato and his Cave, Descartes and his quest for certainty, Kant with his counter-intuitive claim that objective reality is beyond our grasp, hidden by our senses. Continental thinkers too, the likes of Sartre and Camus, were consulted, with their bleak analyses of the human condition, arguing that reality is nothing more than the meaning the individual imposes on an otherwise utterly meaningless existence. Hardly a laugh a minute but nonetheless a piece of the jigsaw. So is Popper’s insistence that our search for reality will get nowhere without a healthy respect for doubt and error.

These are deep waters, but they got a whole lot deeper

thanks to Robin Ince’s 2021 book, The Importance of Being Interested - Adventures in Scientific Curiosity. If, like me, you are not entirely at home with quantum mechanics and subatomic particles, this book is a useful companion, both erudite and funny. He introduces us to a wide range of writers who know their way around such subjects. [A book to be recommended, with Christmas a mere six months away.]

Ince demonstrates how reality is far more complex than we might at first think. Maybe it doesn’t exist at all. Or, more likely, we all live in several realities at the same time.

The question is: does any of this matter or is it just so much hot air? Whatever our view of reality, we still have to buy our groceries and pay the bills. Well, it does matter if you take philosophy seriously. After all, what is philosophy if not a search for truth? - in other words a search for reality.

In her conversation with Bryan Magee, Iris Murcoch hit the nail on the head: ‘Philosophy involves seeing the absolute oddity of what is familiar and trying to formulate really probing questions about it.’ Russell echoes the same theme. Philosophy, he says, reveals ‘the strangeness and wonder lying just below the surface even in the commonest things of daily life.’

There’s nothing in life odder than reality [apart from golf], and for sure, nothing more wonderful.

USUALLY only review films due to appear in more than one cinema but this June’s offerings are so sugary, slight and/or silly – e.g. LOVE AGAIN, BOOK CLUB 2, ABOUT MY FATHER, FAST X – that here I’m concentrating on Hereford’s Courtyard who are showing a short season of the great Wes Anderson’s back catalogue prior to his next masterpiece, ASTEROID CITY.

Those familiar with writer/director Anderson’s wildly idiosyncratic work love his unique colour palette, fast editing, variously subtle and absurd humour and a numerous major stars, often taking on small roles in stories that ostensibly wouldn’t get beyond a studio exec’s slush pile but which he confidently and comprehensively has a ball with.

The Courtyard is showing 2007’s THE DARJEELING LIMITED in which three brothers take a bonding, pratfall-laden train journey across India following the death of their father which is followed by my all-time favourite, 2014’s multi Oscar-winning, flashbackfestooned GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, featuring put-upon concierge Ralph Fiennes at his most manic. Preceding them both is Anderson’s 1996 debut, BOTTLE ROCKET co-written by and featuring Anderson stalwart Owen Wilson and his brother Luke on an hilariously ill-advised, post-mental hospital crime spree.

Altogether an unmissable trio and you can book all three at the Courtyard for just £15!

The Greenman, Fownhope

AFTER 35 years living in Herefordshire and Shropshire in his alter ego, it is inevitable that Mr Pernickety knows a number of people who own eating places around the Marches. This can be difficult if he feels he should review such an establishment, when, as a compassionate man, he feels somewhat constrained in reporting obvious flaws. He has never felt it his function merely to give a place a puff to protect sensitive owners – if he finds any beastly aspects to it, it is his duty to expose them as a prophylactic against his readers’ disappointment. This creates the dilemma that his review may offend owners whom he knows. In these cases, Mr P will simply fail to submit a review if it will hurt, delivering the multiple blows of eating a rotten dinner and having to pay for it without the opportunity to convey the experience in his own particular metier.

It may have been seeing our new Monarch in his purple train and crown that prompted Mr P to think of the Greenman, that potent, ancient British symbol of living nature and eco-superhero, presumably a major inspiration to the Royal tree-hugger. Mr P is sympathetic; he too enjoys a little arboreal touchy-feeliness. Deciding to visit the Greenman Inn in Fownhope for the first time in many years, he set off with his Lovely Companion, but with some misgivings because the place had been owned for a number of years by a family he knew.

Once there, he quickly learned what he could have done earlier if he’d prepared himself properly - that the former owners of the big handsome inn had sold it a year or two ago to a PubCo called Redcat Inns. This brought him a little relief. If it turned out to be rotten, he could easily pin the blame to a corporate owner and he would be able to express himself with impunity. He was, as it happened, encouraged when he found that the timber-framed building had been transformed from ordinary old black’n’white to distinctive and pleasing olive green’n’cream. It also had a striking pub sign – a Greenman with an unruly Boris-mop of lush foliage –suggesting that a good eye had been involved at least in the outward appearance of the building. Inside was pleasing too. A good number of punters, even on a normal Tuesday sat within walls Farrow’n’Balled in a warm dark grey that could have been called Hippopotamus Hide, with a good miscellaneous clutter of pictures and nicknackery hung on walls and perched on ledges. The only offending items were randomly placed wooden hearts, whose decorative appeal Mr P has never understood; he doesn’t know what is meant by them. Tables were good, solid three-inch slabs of oak on industrial iron frames with sort of industrial but fairly comfortable chairs. Even the LC who, it must be admitted, can be a bit of a fuss-pot in these things, seemed satisfied. Mr P was told by the waiter who attended them obligingly that the styling of the interior had been the work of the previous owners. At least the PubCo hadn’t spoiled that yet. Mr P and his LC sat opposite one another at a square table. There

wasn’t space to sit at right angles, which they prefer for conversational purposes. Mr P had a good half of Butty Bach to remind himself he was back in Herefordshire, while they read a menu that had a promising individual look to it. A number of dishes was refreshingly unusual. Mr P hoped the chef knew how to cook them.

He was well pleased with his opening Smoked Haddock Gratin, full of strong haddock flavour and a fine cheesy texture. He also purloined one of the LC’s Halloumi Chips with tangy chilli jam – both uplifting. For a main course, Mr P lazily chose a half-pound Rump Steak with Creamy Garlic Mushrooms, Grilled Tomato, Pepper Sauce and Chips. He asked for the meat to be cooked rare, which it properly was – with robust flavour to it and a good carbon coating. The mushrooms were disappointingly undercooked, and the pepper sauce insipid. Chips were excellent.

Opposite him, the LC, chic in her shabbiest Levis, looked serenely content against a background of Hippo Grey, eating her Grilled Lemon Sole & Lemon Orzo with Asparagus & Dill Oil, her enjoyment a little marred by the awkwardness of eating it from a deep and unhelpful bowl. Mr P wonders why some restaurateurs still insist on the outdated practice of serving food in inappropriate crockery. They can’t ever have tried eating out of these things themselves.

Unsuitable and even more unfashionable crockery appeared again under the pudding they shared. A light and delicious Raspberry Frangipane Tart with Raspberry Sorbet and Raspberry Gel was presented on a hopelessly impractical slab of Welsh slate which had Mr P and the LC sliding the goodies all over the place trying to get them onto their spoon. Here, a bowl would have helped.

Mr P has recently been encouraged to take pity on his liver, and was able to enjoy his three courses with water, and a single glass of good French Pinot Noir. He also was pleased with service which was good, if a little slow, and a sound track of low dynamic singer-songwriters’ music and thank God, with a complete absence of Eurovision anthems. The LC concluded that it had been a good dinner, but not worth an hour’s drive. Mr P agreed, thinking that half an hour might be the limit.

Farmer jailed for Eco Vandalism on Industrial Scale

WRITE this at a time of year when there seem to be nothing but bank holidays, coronations, and other days of national celebration. In my very small town, I feel I am battling through acres of patriotic bunting. Mondays off work are all very well, but the poor volunteer writer does not benefit. And, as you may have noticed, the editorial hacks who labour to fill the pages of Broad Sheep were absent from the long lists of worthies invited to Westminster Abbey.

However, instead of awarding myself a day off, I decided to cut back my heavy workload by commissioning an article from a platform based on artificial intelligence. I am assured that the punctuation, style and sheer panache of this piece will perfectly match the articles I have been sending the editor every month for the last few years, a few days (minutes) before my deadline.

But this time those brilliant words and paragraphs will have been created by an AI system. It is called Pedantic! It seems to be working and doing its job already and to be honest, I can’t tell the difference. Did you spot the join? Perhaps there is a hanging participle, or a cliché? A split infinitive, or some other infelicity? If so, please write to the editor, or to me, and we will happily throw this AI prog onto the scrap heap of history!

You may have noticed that a farmer in Herefordshire has been jailed for causing environmental damage along a mile-long stretch of the River Lugg. John Price, of Day House Farm, Kingsland, has been sentenced to a year in prison and has been ordered to pay over £1.2 million, after pleading guilty to a string of environmental offences.

When it comes to the river and its banks, it seems that Farmer Price has a bit of form. This goes back to 2007, when he allegedly built a dam on farmland he was renting near Stretford. The dam was to enable him to water his potato crop. At that time the unauthorised earthworks caused a waterway, Stretford Brook, to dry up for about a mile of its course, according to the Environment Agency. Price pleaded guilty to two offences and was fined.

In 2018, Price carried out more works on land he rented at Marden, say local reports. In the ensuing prosecution, his defence maintained that these alterations to the landscape were made with good intentions. In 2020 and 2021, Price is alleged to have made more changes to the Lugg and its banks, breaching a series of regulations. Price admitted a number of charges.

As long ago as 1995, the Lugg had been rated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. As I read it, an SSSI is an area judged to contain wildlife valuable enough to require a special protection regime. But prosecutors have alleged that John Price caused such extensive damage to the River Lugg and its banks that the habitats of otters, kingfishers, crayfish, salmon and many other species were destroyed, along with dozens of plants and trees. Passing sentence on Price in March, District Judge Ian Strongman said, “Any person could not fail to be dismayed by the devastation caused by Mr Price.” Price had turned the river into “…a canal devoid of most life. It is ecological vandalism on an industrial scale.”

During his unauthorised works, Price was alleged to have used bulldozers and excavators along the Lugg, without consent. The defence argued that Price’s activities were part of a plan aimed at flood prevention. It was also claimed in Mr Price’s defence that he was autistic. Well, a while back, we were told that the Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg was autistic, but I don’t recall this being cited as justification for a program of dramatic environmental alterations impacting her neighbours in Stockholm.

Reports suggest that farmer Price’s assets mean he could be worth over £20 million all told. If so, he can hardly be seen as a poor son of the soil, struggling to survive. After this case, he faces a bill for £600,000 for the prosecution’s costs plus £600,000 to pay for restoration works ordered by the regulators.

When I raised the case of Price with an acquaintance who professes disillusion with environmentalism, she referred me to a website called Conservative Woman. It carried an outspoken article defending Price. Although the Tories have put out mixed signals on the environment in recent years, I couldn’t see many Tories taking up the cudgels on behalf of the alleged “vandal” farmer.

I then learned that “Conservative Woman” does not claim any links to the Tory party. In fact, it seems to be led by denialists, who refuse to accept man’s role in causing climate change. Their views on the environmental damage along the River Lugg must be seen in that context. A blind spot about global warming has apparently spilled over, to engulf the more prosaic, but equally important issue of our waterways and their health and vitality.
