Dead White Men’s Clothes
A
S YOU know I am something of a trendsetting fashion Kumasi Market plate, man about town sort of a guy, so imagine my amazement at a gig last week to discover, on looking down, that I was entirely dressed (apart from my underthings) in items purchased from Ebay! How had this happened? Now, admittedly, I’m not exactly Savile Row, but in the past I have been known to hit a few of the more salubrious local boutiques - Cancer Research, Oxfam, ‘even’ on occasions, if I’m flush, TK Max. Then this week I saw a documentary on the telly that began to explain my shift in buying habits and answered the big question that’s been worrying everyone for the last few years, i.e. “Why are the clothes in charity shops so shit these days?” The answer can be summed up in two words Vintage and Ghana. Let’s start with vintage. In my day the only things that were vintage were cars built between 1918 and 1930 and Champagne. Now everything’s vintage, this magazine is if you’re reading it after August 1st. Probably you are, certainly all your clothes are and that’s why from Land’s End to John O’Groats we have this unhealthy outbreak of vintage clothes shops. Basically they are just like Oxfam shops, only without the football shirts and paperbacks, but instead of a pair of shoes being £5, they are £50. Let’s hope this fad for all things vintage will soon pass, but while it’s still in spate the vintage shops are swallowing up all the grandad collarless shirts, lace petticoats and full length leather coats, they can lay their hands on (not to mention trilby hats, vintage shops love trilby hats). This makes a dent in what’s available, but it’s not the whole story. So at this point I know what you’re thinking. What has happened to that pair of ‘dirty turquoise’ Ralph Lauren jeans I inadvisably bought the year before last and ended up giving them, unworn to ‘The Donkeys In Need’. Well I can tell you. They Small Ads 4 are now on a very smart stall at the posh end of the street market in Kumasi on Hugh’s bit 6 sale for 75 Ghanaian Cedi. Yes folks, Ghana has gone nuts for pre-owned British Art 8 clothes and is importing hundreds of tons of baled up charity shop excess stock. In fact, there are so many imported second-hand clothes in the country now that Art workshops 12 it is having a really detrimental effect on the local clothing industry. This might be Cinema 18 a good thing, because frankly, who wants to be seen wearing those sensational, Dance 20 hand-made, brightly patterned clothes when you could be sporting a Luis Suarez Food 22 football shirt. But here’s the kicker. All this imported mass-produced trash you are throwing away is known in Ghana as ‘Obroni Wawu’ or in other words ‘Dead white Music 24 men’s clothes’! Music workshops 37 So now you know what’s going on, it’s easy to see why your local British Red Venues 39 Cross outlet has only fawn cavalry twill trousers and grey macintoshes in stock. hugh’s bit Fencing the Dyke O
N ONE of the coldest of recent days I took my Land Rover up to Tim’s place in the hills and from there we bumped across the fields to Offa’s Dyke, where we had a job to do. In a fit of righteous zeal some DEFRA official had ordered the removal of a few venerable self-sown hawthorns which were growing out of the Dyke, along with two or three of those characteristically hardy silver birches that live up on the tops. It’s a policy being applied to other parts of the Dyke as well. We were going to load up some of the felled timber so that Tim - a skilled craftsman - could turn the baulks into obituary pieces of furniture, made from the trees that he had known and cherished for more than 35 years. One of the reasons for the official directive was that badgers dig setts amongst the trees roots, thus undermining the Dyke. However there was no sign of badgers or setts at the site, and the tree roots couldn’t be removed anyway, and it’s a bleak and open spot to boot, so it wasn’t a likely place for them to take up residence, although there’s plenty of evidence of rabbits. It probably never occurred to the heritage-inspired officer that someone might have recorded these ordinary trees in snow and in spring and in flower and at leaf-fall, in watercolours, photos, poems and journals for more than 3 decades. Tim had individual names for some of them. It wouldn’t have occurred to the officer that, alongside the national significance of the Dyke, these stunted and wind-twisted hawthorns were part of a local living heritage, an enduring physical and mental home range, and a song-line for the locality. Many country people have friends amongst the trees; there’s a scraggy and insignificant thing called the Whitty tree on the Dyke near me - its probably only a solitary rowan (sorbus aucuparia), rather than a genuine whitty pear (s. domestica) but I know for a fact it’s important to the farmer on whose land it grows; it carries his family’s memories across several decades. But perhaps local sentiment and local identity don’t match up to cold Heritage Science imported from “off” via an urban office and an ivory tower theory. Under the same regime the Dyke, shorn of its trees, has also been fenced off for several hundred metres, to prevent over-grazing. Sheep however are the key mechanism that keeps this landscape from turning into scrub, and the cropped grass is the essential surface layer that holds back the erosion of the Dyke and binds the surface together, so, having mistakenly excluded the sheep, they then had to install gates to let them back in. The whole bumbling operation is ugly and ridiculously expensive and makes the once-mighty 1300 year old rampart look pathetic. The redoubtable

defence that Offa built to keep out the cattle-raiding Welsh - another Gaza made by another Hadrian - now has to be protected from a few herbivores by lines of unhedged barbed wire, in a doomed attempt to hold back the erosion which time and the weather will inexorably accomplish. And one wonders how on earth it has survived this long – only from King Offa to Queen Elizabeth II - without the zealous protection of the State. Fencing the Dyke destroys the very heritage it is meant to preserve, which is the experience of history in context, and in appropriately slow motion. The Dyke is a very long, ancient earthwork worn down by history, a huge monument to Time, and the insignificance of man. Erosion is the permanent condition of the Dyke, that’s its status, part of its message; even in its prime it only baulked the marauding Welsh for half a century. The Dyke is going back whence it came, this long breaker of soil subsiding in the tidal zone between the old kingdoms of England and Wales; it’s the slowest motion wave you will see on earth. “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.” – is perhaps what visitors briefly experience, whilst for the locals the intimate and irreplaceable relationships of the animals, and the trees around the Dyke and the seasons accumulate in the memory, layer by layer, year by year, like tree-rings in the bone. Which is more important? – a living small-scale heritage, a deep sense of a particular place built up over a life-time, or the bleak protectionist ideas of officers from “off” who have imposed their disconnected, ugly, expensive and ultimately ineffective harness on yet another aspect of our lives, and who are unlikely to revisit the scene of their mistake from decade to decade? The fading grandeur of the Dyke, this instance of the primitive power of our ancestors is both misinterpreted and diminished by being treated preciously as an exhibit. As we left the Dyke with our load of timber we mused on the insensitivity to local detail and to local opinion of national farming, green, forestry and heritage agendas. We prayed that if the government has to cut jobs because of the economic down-turn, then please can we lose the pointless ones. Come Global Warming proper the Dyke will become a sand dune and be blown away, or come the next Ice Age it’ll be scraped up and bull-dozed off the map by the new Arctic Ice sheet. In the meantime let us not be mean with time. Let Time flow across the Dyke as it always has, as a function of the weather. Erosion is part of its living presence. (c) Hugh Colvin 2008-14

The Cider Barn, Pembridge
A
FEW months ago, when Mr Pernickety’s alter ego received an invitation to the opening of a new restaurant, The Cider Barn, he felt a delicious surge of déjà vu, wafting him back through time to a moment, at least twenty years ago, when he’d been present at the first opening of a restaurant in that same building. The barn, a fine old timber-framed edifice with stone footings, had been taken down in another part of Herefordshire, moved and skilfully re-erected in a peaceful, isolated meadow behind Dunkertons’ cider mill on the narrow lane that snakes prettily between Pembridge and Weobley. Mr P liked what he saw then, and went back to enjoy several gatherings there – notably a party to mourn the passing of Hong Kong from Britain’s control in 1997 – an alarming seventeen years ago! Sad to say, though, in the end the restaurant struggled to survive by the Millennium – perhaps as a result of its comparative isolation, perhaps due to other factors. One or two other brave individuals had a go at re-starting it, but, somewhat to his shame, Mr P never went to support them, and they too abandoned hope. Driving to the party to mark the start of its third, possibly fourth incarnation, Mr P was not sanguine about its chances of success. He had discovered that it was to be operated by Sophie Griffiths-Goddard, a young woman of 24, who had trained to be a doctor, before changing her mind to become a chef. She was being backed in the enterprise by her mother and step-father, neither of whom, it seemed, had any experience of the restaurant trade. These elements, combined with an immutable geographic handicap, seemed to offer little hope of a vigorous new life in the old building. The party, when he reached it, was a pretty rum do which did nothing to diminish these cynical thoughts. The other invitees, presumably prospective punters for the new venture, looked, for the most part, unglamorous and, frankly, dull. The dear old barn, on the other hand, was as inviting as ever, still with the same old furniture, although some unattractive white furniture had been introduced for no clear reason. On the face of it, the sample menu looked bland and a little expensive. Mr P bought himself a bottle of Dunkertons excellent Black Fox cider and moped around for an hour or so, feeling as if he were at a wake rather than a baptism. His evening was saved only by a visit on the way home to the New Inn at Pembridge, one of his favourite pubs where one who suffers, as Mr P does, from acute verbal dysentery is allowed to prattle on unhindered, to apparently receptive ears, while guzzling Hobson’s bitter.

A month or so later, having given the new incumbents at the Cider Barn time to settle down, Mr Pernickety with his LC beside him pointed the aged Volvo towards the wilds of west Herefordshire to see how they were getting on. It was a Wednesday; four or five tables were occupied, including a raucous eight-strong party of what might have been youngish farmers. Mr & Mrs P were invited to have their pre-prandial drink on a terrace on the south side of the barn, overlooking a classic Herefordshire landscape of orchards and meadows beneath a sinking sun. It was a pity, the LC remarked, that the terrace seemed a little neglected and the chairs and table at which they sat looked cheap and a little naff. Menus, brought by attentive and, it transpired, efficient staff, came attached to pointless lacquered pine clipboards. But behind them the barn glowed mellow in the crepuscular light, and the menu looked a good deal more interesting than the opening preview – indeed, Mr P found an item he’d never seen before on a menu in the Marches – Crispy Pigs Ears with Walnut Mayonnaise & Green Bean Salad, which he ordered without hesitation. The LC decide to start with Salt Pollock, Squid with Chilli, Tomatoes, Olives & a Mustard Cream. Pig’s ears was a brave offering for any chef, especially one so young, but her decision was absolutely justified – Mr P found in them an entirely new flavour, delicious in their casing of breadcrumbs with the bean salad. The LC, too, was delighted by her Salt Pollock, and pleased to find the squid – so often chewy and bland – tender and tasty. Between courses, they looked around. There was no music, but the large high-ceilinged space (which will cost a packet to heat in winter) was prone to echo in a way which amplified the noisy banter from the neighbouring table. Some softening – partial covering of the floor with rugs – would help, as would tablecloths, plain linen or even gingham, which would also hide the dated lacquered finish on the pine table tops (though the ladder-backed raffia seated chairs in a variety of hues were goodlooking and comfortable). Some bigger, better pictures on the large wall spaces might have helped (and there is no shortage of artists wishing to show their stuff in good settings such as this barn). The horrid, distracting spotlights could easily be replaced with candles in wall sconces, and on the tables too, which do much to improve the ambience in the evenings.
Mr Ps’ Lovely Companion followed her salt pollock starter with Sea Bass, Confit Potatoes, Samphire, Pancetta & Lemon Butter – all to her liking. The fish was good and fresh, the samphire, a special treat. Mr P decided to test the chef’s butcher by ordering a 10 oz Hereford Rump Steak, with Chips, Mushroom Ketchup & Rocket. He asked for the meat to be cooked rare, which it was, perfectly, with the mushroom ketchup adding a pleasing, unfamiliar twist. In an attempt not to add to the growing mountain of chubby folk who are said to be clogging up the NHS, Mr P and the LC like their puddings tasty but small, and generally order just one between them – on this occasion Chocolate and Almond Praline Torte, Raspberry Sorbet and Cream. This provided two or three light, delicious mouthfuls to end an unflawed dinner which had been swiftly and discretely served (with no ‘Enjoys!’) for c£65. Mr P is ashamed to say that he has forgotten and made no note of the wines they drank, but they must have been all right or he would have remembered. They are supplied, in any case, by the generally reliable John Villar. Mr P is delighted that all his misgivings over the re-launch of a restaurant in this fine venue turned out to be unfounded. Ms Griffiths-Goddard is an intelligent and inventive chef who deserves to do well and Mr Pernickety truly hopes that, notwithstanding the lovely but hard-tofind location of the Cider Barn, she will prosper as she should.
