HE woman who strode into the office was one classy dame. I could tell from the way she was dressed. Burberry scarf - check. Worn-out Barbour jacket - check. One of them itchy skirts - check. Muddy boots - check. ‘Here we go round the bush’ handbag - check. “Hey Toots” I said “What’s going down? Did you leave His Royal H. in the Range Rover with a coke and a packet of crisps?” She fixed me with a stare like a laser. “Let’s get one thing straight you horrible little man. My name is not Toots. You can address me as Lady Rockford and much against my better judgement I have been advised to place a small advertisment in your grubby little publication.” She went on “It will read Handsome reward offered for anyone who finds a small brown and white dog answering to the name of Olluff. Last seen in Presteigne High street on Wednesday afternoon at Small Ads 4 4pm.” “Now tell me who to make the cheque out to and I’ll be on my way. And incidentally, your office looks like a rubbish tip.” Hugh’s bit 6 “For one”, I countered “offices are meant to look like this. Not like Buckingham effing Art 8 Palace.” “For two, we don’t accept cheques on account of a little misunderstanding with Art workshops 10 Larry Lloyd, and for three when you say ‘Handsome reward’ are we talking peanuts or Cinema 16 avocado stones?” “Well Mr Whatever your name is” she replied “when I said handsome I meant very Dance 20 generous. The dog in question is dear to me and is an extremely rare Norwegian LundeFood 22 hund. It must have jumped out of the Land Rover even though I thought the doors and Music 24 windows were shut while I was stocking up on Manchego.” “Okay Toots” I replied “you have just have accidently come to the very right place. Music workshops 34 Park your pizzle on the swivel and let’s talk turkey.” “Although you see me as a humble Venues 37 ink-slinger on a small-town rag, I was once a shamus hence I maybe just be the lunk you Band directory 38 need to reclaim the errant pooch, which has probably not run off but been snatched by Theatre 40 the bad guys. You see I used to be Larry M., a.k.a. The Hippy Dick!” She fixed me again with her laser stare but her face screwed up like she’d just downed Word 44 a glass of lemon juice and she spoke thusly “Well Mr Dick, I didn’t really understand a Grass roots 46 word of that garbled nonsense but are you suggesting you can find my Olluff?” Comp therapies 48 “Things are a bit slow in the pamphlet business on account of the digital redistribution. So £35 a day plus expenses” I countered. We take no “Done” she replied, “here is my card” and with a swirl of tweed and leaving only a wiff responsibility for of horse manure, she was gone. the veracity of the I’ve had some weired jobs back in the day, so a missing pooch was no big deal, but information herein on the other hand, the last time I’d worn a fedora was 30 years ago. There was only one Pete Mustill place to start. Presteigne Library computer and Google. Isn’t Google great? Not only Mayfield, Stapleton, keeping an eye on your personal life and suggesting useful things you might like to buy Nr Presteigne, Powys on Amazon but it also knows about weird dogs! LD8 2LW The Norwegian Lundehund is a small Spitz type dog that has a great range of motion Tel: 01544 260051 Email: info@broadsheep.com in its joints, dogs of this breed are able to bend their head backwards along their own Website: www.broadsheep.com spine and turn their forelegs to the side at a 90-degree horizontal angle to their body. The Norwegian Lundehund is a polydactyl: instead of the normal four toes per foot, the Lundehund normally has six toes, all fully formed, jointed and muscled. The Lundehund is adapted to climb narrow cliff paths in Værøy where it originally would have hunted puffins......wow. Luckily for me there is one man in Presteigne who knows even more than Google. Nothing that happens in town gets past Alfie at Patio Reclamation and that was my next port of call. “Hey come in the back and look at this Art Deco bus timetable, it’s right up your strassa” he greeted me. “No time for that Alfie, now concentrate. Day before yesterday in the High Street. Snooty Bird with a Land Rover and a little dog. Went in the deli, a whole round of Manchego, back out the door, Rover has skipped town. Anyone suspicious around that day?” Alfie’s mind is like CCTV, only someone has muddled up all the tapes. He closed his eyes and looked thoughtful. “Tell you what Alfie” I said, “you sit yourself down on that fake Victorian chaise longue and I’ll nip down the Moroccan and get you a Lavazzo and a croissant.” Alfie always thinks better on a full stomach, and sure enough by the time I got back he’d remembered something. He pulled out a dog-eared copy of ‘Observers Book of Cars 1956’. “Wednesday afternoon there was a really weird sports car in town. Now I know my 50’s motors, but this was something else. Looked a bit like a 1964 Bond Equipe built on a Triumph Herald chassis, but something wasn’t right, so I looked it up. You know what? It was a 1957 TROLL, one of only five that were ever built, with a 700 Gutbrod 2-stroke, twin-engine and a fibreglass body and it was built in .... Norway.” ‘Dan de dan dan daaaar!!’ (Will The Hippy Dick and Alfie ever find Lady Rockford’s pooch? Tune in for next month’s thrilling episode).

The Lion’s Square T

HERE is a lion in Sator Square. I proved it. That was when the fog cleared, when I stopped drifting, and my feet touched the ground. And how I met my wife. The Lion in Sator Square is the title of my maths thesis. I’m a statistician and my Ph D. proved the maths that shows that at any time there could be a real live lion in Sator Square, although of course there is no lion and no place called Sator Square either. I was born in August so I’m a Leo which is why I chose a Lion - Leo is Latin for Lion, and the Sator Square is an incomprehensible palindromic Latin cross-word thing, a paper mystery, not a town square. But nothing is as it seems. My Ph. D. is quite clever and the maths I playfully invented for it are useful in all sorts of other ways – all of them more important than the potential for a freak lion to appear in a non-existent place. It’s to do with negative numbers which are necessary although they don’t exist. How I met my wife was at Uni. I got talking about my thesis to some people who I didn’t really know and she was one of them. She thought my title was funny, either my title or me anyway. What was much more serious than funny was that the minute I looked at her I saw her. Her quizzical green eyes were the windows to her soul - alright. Its very important to remember first impressions, and I still think of her the same way now. I don’t think she looks in the mirror much, she knows who she is already, but what she sees when she bothers to look is a face that you couldn’t improve with make-up, a big brow, straight nose, blonde hair and those quizzical eyes, only the wrong way round - cos she’s looking in a mirror. She fended me off for a long time, checking me out I guess, but when I finally went to her flat she gave me Viagra and tumbled me all night. I’d never imagined anything could be so good as making love to her. It was as unlikely for me as the lion in Sator Square. Mathematicians are not top of the ratings for pulling, and I’m not top of the ratings even for a mathematician. But then she turned me out in the morning and wouldn’t sleep with me again. She said she liked me, she even admitted to liking me “quite a lot”, but she said I wasn’t ready. Nothing to do with the sex, just me. I didn’t know which was worse. I suppose statistics is pretty dull, and so I thought I was too. We used to meet for coffee sometimes and she’d look at me and say she might wait a bit longer. I would ask her for what? and she would say “for you to go click in your head”. This went round and round for ages. I didn’t really know what she was on about until I went for a job in London. Just before I travelled down for the interview we met for a coffee and she told me to go and look for

Sator Square. I said “but I invented it”, but she said she’d looked it up and it really existed. So on the day, just to kill time, I bought an A to Z and went and found it, and it is there, it really is. Why I thought it wouldn’t be I don’t know. I thought she was winding me up. When I got there it was a quiet square, big, but not grand, not like Trafalgar Square. Its at the end of Sator Street, it’s a cul-de-sac. You go down the street, and then the road goes the full 360 degrees round an island of grass and trees and shrubs in the middle and that’s Sator Square. It was like an urban oasis – not palm trees round a pool of water in the middle of a dusty plain and camels and so on, but lime trees and laurel and robinia and blackthorn thickets around a hidden green, a clearing behind cast-iron railings in the middle of the endless houses. It felt like a place where mothers go for little walks with their toddlers and meet other mothers with pushchairs while avoiding old men in belted mackintoshes with little yappy dogs, but there was absolutely no-one around that morning. Except the Lion, which roared its greeting softly at me when I came through the trees. She was sat at one end of the grass and I sat down at the other and then we looked at each other. My lion. We looked at each other for a long time. She blinked now and again. Sphinx. My heart was beating very fast when I walked towards her. When I bent down in front of her, she stared at me for several seconds and then she put up one paw and swatted me aside. That was all. But I had seen into her eyes, close-up. I woke up in the hospital with my wife at my bedside, only she wasn’t my wife then, that came later. There was a big bandage on the side of my face. She said, “They say you fell into some thorn bushes, and banged your head. Those are some pretty serious scratches on your face… What were you doing?” And I looked into her eyes again, and didn’t answer her and after a bit she said “Oh! you’ve gone click!” Hugh Colvin

cinema SICARIO (15) Fast-rising Canadian indie director Denis Villeneuve assuredly enters Hollywood’s mainstream with this terrific take on the ambiguities of the war on drugs. After raiding a Mexican cartel’s safe house, FBI agent Kate Macy (an intriguingly well cast Emily Blunt) joins a secretive team tasked with eliminating the cartel’s bosses. Along with the cynically maverick Matt (Josh Brolin, LABOR DAY) and world-weary Alejandro (drug movie specialist, Benicio Del Toro, SAVAGES), she realises that she’s involved in a very dirty crusade whose goal may not just be stemming the flow of drugs into America. Villeneuve, who threw some masterful twists at a gasping audience with his vigilante movie PRISONERS, pulls some similar tricks here, but abetted with several violent, stunningly orchestrated set-pieces which only underline the traffickers’ apparent invincibility. JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE (15) Following last year’s hit Amy Winehouse bio-pic, awardwinning documentarian Amy Berg (WEST OF MEMPHIS) delivers an equally heart-rending memoir of the original bad girl rock singer, Janis Joplin. Like Amy (and Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison), Janis died aged 27 of a heroin overdose before fully realising her considerable potential. A seasoned performer with Texas bar bands, Janis became a star fronting San Francisco’s powerful Big Brother & The Holding Company. Berg resuscitated rare footage of her feisty childhood, her self-discovery as a blues singer and her increasingly pressurised stardom, along the way making the inevitable romantic mistakes before finally descending into hard drugs. Poignant interviews and stunning performances including her knockout rendition of ‘Ball and Chain’ at 1967’s Monterey Pop festival affirm her legendary status. 15 Feb SLOW WEST (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 16 Feb GEMMA BOVERY (15) The Royal British Legion, Newport 07886 697934 16 Feb THE WALK (PG) Acton Scott VH 01694 781260 17 Feb HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 (U) Under the Rock Park Canopy, Rock Park Heritage Centre 01597 828050 17 Feb FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (12A) Escleyside Hall 01981 510696 17 Feb THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 17 Feb JERSEY BOYS (15) Myddle VH 01939 290872 17 Feb SAVING GRACE (15) Pencombe Parish Hall 01885 400611 18 Feb WOMAN IN GOLD (12A) Claverley VH 01746 710528 18 Feb WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAY (12A) Gorsely VH 01989 720358 18 Feb THE IMITATION GAME (12A) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 682282 18 Feb PALIO (12) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 19 Feb THE WALK (PG) Bosbury Parish Hall 01531 640415 19 Feb THE BOOK THIEF (12A) Shifnal VH 01952 462787 19 Feb TEA WITH MUSSOLINI (PG) Stoke Prior VH 01568 760423 19 Feb MINIONS (U) Rock VH 19 Feb KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (15) Rock VH 20 Feb MINIONS (U) Llanbister Community Hall 01597 840450 20 Feb SUITE FRANCAISE (15) Cleobury Mortimer Parish Hall 01299 270830 20 Feb SUFFRAGETTE (12A) Bicton VH 01743 850495

GRANDMA (15) This unlikely road movie features a superbly o n - f o r m L i l y To m l i n (NASHVILLE, TEA WITH MUSSOLINI) as Ellie, recently bereft of both her longterm lesbian lover who finds herself chasing up the $600 cost of an abortion for Sage (Julia Garner, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE), her pregnant teenage granddaughter. Driving round in Ellie’s ’55 Dodge Royale the pair confront a motley cast of characters including Sage’s overbearing mother (Marcia Gray Harding), the feckless father of her unborn child (Nat Wolff) and most tantalisingly, a lover from Ellie’s distant heterosexual past (Sam Elliott). Writer/ director Paul Weitz (ABOUT A BOY) knows how to meld wit and poignancy whilst avoiding mush, and the performances are terrific with Tomlin reminding us of her peerless talent for acerbic put-downs that often conceal considerable emotional complexity.

The Corn Mill, Llangollen

L

AST summer Mr Pernickety found himself taking the cross-country route back from Rhyl, one of the most unattractive resorts on the bleak coast of North Wales. He’d made what turned out to be the wrong decision in going there to collect an unspeakably hefty Victorian church pew. He had acquired this through the Internet from a seafront hotel which had fallen on hard times in that benighted town. It was with a gloomy awareness of his own lack of judgement that he trundled south down the Vale of Clwyd with the beastly object strapped on top of the aging Volvo. He decided that he deserved the sort of spiritual uplift that a journey across the higher contours of the Llantysilio mountain might deliver. After leaving the quaint town of Ruthin with its strangely mutilated castle and hideous craft centre, Mr P headed up into the hills to take the Horseshoe Pass over the top to Langollen. Soon he was driving through dense cloud. No doubt, had the view up there been visible, his soul would have been lifted by it. As it was, he dropped down into valley of the Dee and the picturesque-ish town of Llangollen, even more depressed and in dire need of a pick-me-up. This strange little town, with its 14th century bridge, burgeoned in the 19th century as a result of its site on the Dee and three man-made arteries – the London to Holyhead highway, the Llangollen Canal which connected to the Shropshire Union and the rest of England, and the Ruabon to Barmouth railway. There was a time, the town boasts with painful nostalgia, when a traveller could take a train from Llangollen to London without changing. On the river, opposite the railway station, stands a large former corn mill which has existed since the thirteenth century, was rebuilt in 1786 and ceased to grind corn as recently as 1974. The current owners took it on and did it up in 2000, although its improvements have more of a 60s air about them. Mr P, who had never heard of the place, was inevitably drawn to inspect it further; he was immediately pleased by what he found. He sat down to a light supper of fish-cake and good wine, telephoned the LC to tell her he wished she was there, and promised that they would return to review the place when an opportunity presented itself.

It was only a couple of weeks ago, on the way home from seeing a distinguished thespian friend in pantomime at the splendidly rococo Alhambra Theatre in Bradford that the chance of a detour to The Corn Mill cropped up. The place displays its distinctiveness at once, nothing like one of those characterless, homogenous chains of eateries such as you would find in the horrid new Hereford shopping mall. It is furnished apparently at the whim of the owners with fascinating eclecticism, full of the kind of lovely, useless old objects that make Mr P’s Lovely Companion drool with excitement. While there is a slight lack of sophistication in the way the space was adapted from corn crunching to meal munching, that personal flavour lends to the place what the young Pernicketys would call a chilled vibe. But Mr P, the LC and the Children’s Menu Consultant had to wander around for a while trying to find the right spot to sit in the rambling premises. Some areas in it are too highceilinged and brightly lit for the dark evenings of winter, but the windows on the river side all offer wonderful views of the Dee roaring by on its way to Chester, with handsome steam engines and vintage rolling stock standing in the station on the far side. Settling at a cosy table adjacent to the old iron cogs and pulleys of the former milling tackle, Mr P drank a pint of pale well-flavoured Sunny Bitter from Facer’s Flintshire Brewery while they ate tasty olives and ordered. To start they had Roquefort, chestnut and fig tart with mulled wine syrup. They all enjoyed this unusual

concatenation of ingredients – the slight crunch of the nuts, the sharpness of the cheese and chewy sweetness of the fig. The LC was generally pleased with her Smoked haddock, red mullet and mussel chowder with bacon and sweet corn dumplings, although, she said, she’d have enjoyed it more with less salt. The CMC was guzzling his 8oz Steak Burger like a lion cub whose mother hasn’t collared a gnu for some time and could manage no more of an opinion than, ‘Distinctly steaky’. Mr P was getting on well with his Roasted belly pork with celeriac, cider and whole grain mustard sauce, feeling only that the meat could have been finished at higher heat to give it more of a crunch and that the apple Lyonnaise potatoes and celeriac were somewhat overcooked and soggy. He accompanied this happily with a glass of Aradon Rioja at £3.25. For pudding, they shared Roasted plums with marmalade cream and crushed meringue, which they all loved, and, as is often the case, one serving was enough for the three of them. Overall they left the charming Corn Mill feeling content that, with minor cavils, they had eaten a quality dinner, cooked with integrity, if not quite enough attention to detail, from an imaginative and demanding menu. His bill, before tipping, came to £80.95. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW ARE MORE BUSINESSES LIKE RIVERSIMPLE S

OME things are described as “important” – but in the greater scheme of things they are not so much important as “quite interesting” – such as self – opening doors for cars. And car keys that recognize your face. These things are not really important in a way that is fundamental to the car of the future. Not in the same way that the technology that powers the car will be.

This is an update on Riversimple, a business based in Wales, developing very efficient hydrogen fuel cell cars. The intention is to offer the cars on contract, concentrating on expanding one area at a time. A production prototype has now been constructed by Riversimple engineers in Llandrindod Wells. The engineers tested the prototype for the first time at the Royal Welsh Showground last October and it is now road legal. The Riversimple business model is pretty radical. The structure revolves around 6 business “custodians”. Alongside and equal to a custodian representing investors and one representing commercial partners, is a custodian for the environment, a custodian for local community, a custodian for customers and a custodian for staff. All custodians take an equal part in decision making. Electric vehicles – Battery and fuel cell powered cars are the clean, low carbon front runners to replace the combustion engine. Battery cars have made the headway so far, but in 2016 a small number of impressive hydrogen fuel cell cars will come on the market. It is often assumed that only the existing big players like Toyota have the capacity to develop these new technologies and turn out cars, but there are no rules to say that a new auto-business model – especially one that can balance sustainability with a solid business plan – couldn’t create its own space. It takes a brave company to take on the behemoths of the automotive industry, with their billions invested in vast industrial plants that produce in excess of 300,000 cars per year. The Riversimple model is based, not on mass production nor a business incentive to “design for obsolescence”, but the development of smaller scale local production and the construction of high-quality, longlasting cars. The cars will be made available on contract – this is known as selling mobility as a service - which means the cost of running the new Riversimple car will be comparable to the cost of purchasing and running a typical mid-range car.

The discovery of the hydrogen fuel cell is credited to a Welshman named William Grove. Back in 1839, Grove was experimenting with electrolysis. It’s a well-known process today, in which you pass a current of electricity through water to get hydrogen and oxygen. Grove noticed that when he turned off the electric current, there was a reverse flow – in other words hydrogen was reacting with oxygen to generate electricity. This discovery was not really taken up until the 50s and 60s when NASA was working on the Apollo space program. They developed a ‘Proton Exchange’ membrane through which Hydrogen and Oxygen are catalyzed to create electricity – and this is the basis of the hydrogen PEM fuel cell. The new technology was adopted and developed because of the high efficiency and high energy density it brought to the space program. The hydrogen fuel cell car produces a small amount of water but no harmful emissions, and it is quick to refuel. Hydrogen can be extracted from Natural Gas, but this process has a carbon footprint. However, it is also possible to harvest hydrogen from farm waste/biomass, or by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable sources. Last December in Paris, political leaders and delegates from 195 countries made a historic agreement to tackle climate change. After two decades of climate talks, the Paris Agreement represents – at last - a shared, global vision for cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions. What the world needs now are more businesses like Riversimple, working on the things that will cut emissions at scale – these are things that are not just interesting but also important. And if the Paris Agreement needed a particular boost in the UK, then yes, this winter of floods has been, as George Monbiot wrote recently in the Guardian “as if it had come to remind us of what’s at stake.” Riversimple Mk2 Energy Efficiency – 250 mpg (equivalent) Emissions – Less than 40g CO2 (well to wheel) Range – 300 miles Car to be revealed soon. Open to new investment. 20 more cars planned to come on stream later this year, along with news of a new hydrogen fuelling point. More at www.riversimple.com Rachel Francis, www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk

RIVERSIMPLE – building and testing the new car – the final design is still under wraps.
