S YOU know, I am very keen on crap late night T.V. programmes and it is probably only a couple of months since I was going on about Mystery Dinners, the one where they fill up some guy’s restaurant with hidden cameras so they can spot the chef spitting into the borscht and then confront him on camera. Well much though I enjoy this sort of malarky, I’m losing interest (a) because they keep showing the same episodes over and over again and (b) because (you are not going to believe this) there have been suggestions by both Dave Luke and the American gutter press that the whole thing is a staged set up and not really real reality after all. I am loath to believe these heinious accusations but nonetheless I am slowly transferring my affections to a new programme - Cesar Millan, Dog Whisperer. Unlike Mystery Dinners, Cesar, a smiley and a slightly greasy individual, has millions of different episodes so is not always repeating himself but on the other hand each programme does exhibit a remarkable similarity. The set up is this. Some poor distraught owner rings up Cesar because their poodle is piddling on their carpet, their bulldog is barking at the boyfriend, their rotweiller is eating little children or some such problem. Cesar nips round to their gaff and within three minutes the offending pooch is walking at heel, has stopped pissing, barking or eating the children and is generally acting like Champion the Wonder Dog rescuing old ladies stuck down wells, baby-sitting the kids and juggling chainsaws while tightrope walking over the Hoover damn. (That last bit may be an exaggeration.) I’ve watched so many of the damn things that I’ve now become an expert dog trainer myself but the problem is I don’t have a dog. When I did have dogs I am forced to admit I was a pretty rubbish pack leader. There was ‘Fats’ the ADHD sheepdog who ate the carpet, his bed, the sitting room chair and three sofas and then started terrorising my very young son before running off and presumably getting himself shot. And of course there was Dennis who often featured in these pages and who was impeccably trained but by someone else. Before I had him, he belonged to a family who trained birds of prey and all I ever did was attempt to get him to loosen up a little. It took me quite a few weeks to tempt him to come and sit on the sofa and nearly a year to persuade him to bite the postman. Anyway, yesterday some really weird shit Small Ads 4 started to happen. First of all the advert you Philosophy 6 see on page 58 popped through the email Art 8 box. philosophy
Any Small Change? Y
OU will doubtless remember Blodwyn Boggins of Borth. Well, she’s written again. Still determined to become a philosopher and apparently wanting to have the new experience of thinking, she asks me to provide her with a philosophical puzzle. As is well known, the brainy readers of Broad Sheep likewise relish a meaty intellectual conundrum to while away the interminable gloom of the forthcoming cricket and tennis season. So with Ms. Boggins and the readers in mind, here’s a little something. A man has a small boat, bought from new. He uses the boat for many years during which, bit by bit, every part of the boat has to be replaced. Everything. So the question is: does he still own the same boat? If Ms. Boggins finds this too hard-going she could use the simplified version of ‘The Axe’. The axe has only two parts, which eventually get replaced. Is it the same axe? But a word of caution, Ms. Boggins: the axe puzzle is just as complex as the boat version. Oh yes it is! Recently I heard a recording of ‘Yesterday’ by the Beatles, with the line ‘Suddenly I’m not the man I used to be’. So, dear readers, meandering through these various oddments we come to today’s offering for your consideration: Do people change or do they more or less stay the same? Of course we all experience change of one sort or another, especially with ageing. Eyesight not quite so bright, the gammy leg playing up, and so forth. But what about radical change? Do people change radically? Who would have thought it? Who would ever have imagined that our noble editor, Mr. M, these days the doyen of shabby chic, was once known as King of the Catwalk, modelling the latest lines in snazzy menswear in Parisian fashion-houses? Who WOULD have thought it? The man in the song claims to have changed ‘suddenly’. But perhaps most change happens so slowly, minute by minute, it goes unnoticed. What about a man I know, who has serious claims to be one of Britain’s leading bores has he always been boring? In his seventies now, what was he like when he was fifty, or fifteen, or five? Boring, probably. Or not? Are people capable of real change? Maybe a better question is: are they capable of NOT changing? A doctor friend of mine claims that people don’t change, they simply grow ‘more like themselves’. This seemed wise until I realized that in the final analysis it’s clearly meaningless. [A good model to follow, Ms. Boggins, if you are serious about taking up philosophy.] Some change, however, is definitely sudden. In a seminar a group of my students was discussing how events in a person’s life can bring about a dramatic change of circumstance. One of the students explained that his quality of life had certainly been transformed after his ‘conversion’. I encouraged him to share with the group what had led him to believe in God. ‘Oh no’, he said, ‘it wasn’t religion. It was being converted from solid fuel to North Sea oil’.
6
A lot of people, when they consider change, tend to think of change for the worse. ‘Things aren’t like they used to be’, you hear people say. Views about change are often
fuelled by pessimism, claiming that the past was better than the present because, in general, people change for the worse. A pessimist of my acquaintance was very fond of a hymn which he said summed up his view of the world - ‘Change and Decay in All the World I See’. [A dentist, maybe?] These are deep waters. My mother, by contrast, who was in no way a pessimist, survived into her mid-eighties and told me she had lived through such radical social and moral change that she was no longer able to recognize the world as the same world into which she was born. [Ms. Boggins, who was that philosopher who spoke about it being impossible to jump into the same river twice?] Another point to consider. Who is in the best position to know if a person has changed or not? Perhaps not that person him/herself. Perhaps it falls to others to make that judgment. There’s something about not seeing the wood for the trees. For example, from my extensive research into bores it’s pretty clear that 92% of all known bores have no idea that they are boring. One wonders how that happens. And how would you set about making a bore less boring? Is change possible? So do we remain basically the same, despite the brickbats life throws at us? Is it still the same boat? The same axe? The same you? Who knows? [Not Ms. Boggins, that’s for sure.] Philosopher-in-Residence BOX OFFICE

The Blue Boar, Ludlow

EGULAR but unperceptive readers of this column may take the view that Mr Pernickety is a bit of a cynic, that he sees only imperfection and omission in the eating places he reviews. His more enlightened followers, on the other hand, will have deduced that the Woolly Organ’s reviewer is, in truth, an optimist to a fault; a man of such potent sanguineness that he has been known to award his reviewees with the benefit of sometimes overwhelming doubt. Nevertheless, even he has tended, in the past, to disregard the possibility of actual Miracles until, in the past few days, he discovered that the parting of the Red Sea at Moses’ bidding was as nothing beside the change that has been wrought at The Blue Boar, on Ludlow’s Mill Street. Until the end of last year, Mr P could not pass by this ancient and historic boozer without cringing in horror and coming close to tears. In his 2009 Guide to Eating Ludlow, he described it thus: The Blue Boar is an antique pub in a good building in a fine street, but sadly we cannot honestly commend it to the civilised users of this guide. Mr Pernickety is not so out of touch with the raw realities of the modern world that he doesn’t know there are some young fellows who like to go out on a Saturday night to drink large quantities of lager and then vomit. Perhaps it’s not such a modern phenomenon; the Rev Kilvert told his diary in the 1860s that youths were doing it every week in Chippenham. However, Mr P doesn’t wish to be around to see, hear or smell the event. He isn’t saying that someone is sick every night at the Blue Boar, but it often looks as though someone might be at any minute, and the presence of bulky, unsmiling men on the door on busy evenings seems to confirm that there may be trouble ahead. Add to that the volume of unsubtle music which precludes the cut and thrust of the dry wit so essential to Mr P’s enjoyment of a pint, and any incentive to enter is absent. It was, to paraphrase, a Hell Hole, which also served unspeakable food. At last, at the end of 2014, the police with uncharacteristic consideration, submitted to the onslaught of complaints about the way the pub was being run – and closed the Blue Boar. Punch Taverns who owned the place were caught in a quandary; they would have either to sell the place or find a tenant talented enough to completely re-order the place in a way which would please the discerning local population. As Mr P reported in a recent edition of this magazine, Mr Adam Tutt, an existing tenant of Punch Taverns and licensee of the first-rate Chang Thai Restaurant and Bar, applied and was no doubt picked up and hugged ecstatically by the grey-suited executives of the PubCo. It takes a great deal to make Mr P say anything affirmative about the villainous organisation that is Punch Taverns, but on this occasion he has to applaud them for taking on Mr Tutt’s vision for the Blue Boar in a spirit of total cooperation. The job has been thought through with great clarity and the result is nothing short of miraculous, to the point where, for once, Mr P can find nothing negative to say about the freshly re-opened pub. Even the replacement of the old sign, which,
despite everything else about the former place, Mr P had rather liked, was understandable. Mr Tutt has described it as being a depiction of a ‘Medieval Germanic fighting pig with a hard-on’, with which, frankly, the former clientele found it all too easy to identify. The new Boar has reverted to what Mr P is told it once was, a relaxed, comfortable and handsome town pub, where people can drink, read the papers, play chess and talk – in a complete absence of the previous impenetrable racket of Sky Footer, fruit machines and young women with stout legs and teeny frocks bawling vainly, ‘I Will Survive’ into the Karaoke mic. Endowed by history with a wonderful pair of fine, wide Georgian windows, the front bars are partly separated into different areas, and furnished with a pleasing bunch of old chairs and tables and stuff on the walls, with several taxidermy heads, including a cross-dressed Roebuck in pearls and earrings. The old low ceiling gives the place a comfortable air in which to converse, and there is a large outside courtyard, well-furnished and with a spacious shelter for recidivist fumeurs. Three good ales were on offer when Mr P went, including Hobson’s excellent Town-Crier, and The Three Tuns Cleric’s Cure. Until a pattern of demand emerges, food is served from 12-3pm and from 5-7pm. The menu is simple and good value, taking advantage of any distinctive ingredients that turn up in the Castle Square market on the day. When Mr P called they were offering Venison Pie with spicy sweet potato wedges (£9) Halloumi & sun-dried tomato sausage with duo of salads (£8) Toasted Bagel (from Richard Swift’s bakery) with home-cured gravadlax and Goat’s cheese (£8), a choice of Ploughman’s, again with Swift’s bread and a choice of Little Hereford Cheese, Wenlock Edge Farm gammon, or Homemade Duck, Pork & Chicken Liver Terrine (all at £7). Mr P chose, and smacked his lips over a Honey & Mustard Roast Ham Sandwich in Swift’s bread with excellent chutney (£6). This small but eclectic menu will, Mr P was told, change often. For Mr P, the restored Blue Boar is something he never thought he would see again, and he can only hope that enough punters feel the same, so that it prospers and carries on serving the excellent ales and victuals it is now for a long time to come. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots National Sustainability Award for Local Microhydro Firm B RECON Beacons based TGV Hydro has just received an Ashden Award for its work on community renewable energy. This news comes with big thanks to Chris Blake for the press release and Ashden / Andrew Aitchison Photography for the photos.

The hills and streams of rural Wales make for an ideal location for generating sustainable electricity from hydropower. But many potential sites are too small for the big hydropower developers to touch. TGV Hydro, wholly owned by The Green Valleys CIC, is filling this gap. It’s developing microhydro projects for private and community ownership across South Wales, working closely with the local authority to create a model that could be replicated elsewhere. Local labour is used to build projects where possible, and TGV has helped a new manufacturer of hydro turbines to start up.
With 23 schemes completed across Wales and permissions for another 20 secured, TGV Hydro has been at the forefront of developing clean electricity from mountain streams. The renewable electricity generated can be sold into the national grid, so farmers and communities can diversify their income. And as Chris, who is one of the co-founders of TGV Hydro, explained “there is scope to build low impact microhydro schemes in any upland area – there are thousands of suitable sites across the UK, taking advantage of the energy in water as it runs down hill.” The Ashden Awards have been going for fifteen years now. The very first award was presented to a Rwandan organisation that had designed a clean, energy-efficient oven to help counter the country’s serious deforestation. The Award was front-page news in the country’s press and the winner was met off the plane by President Kagame of Rwanda. Since 2001, Ashden has rewarded over 170 sustainable energy champions across the world, helping everyone form those lacking electricity to those suffering the consequences of cities that are

choked with traffic fumes and congestion. These are the people who are making sustainable energy more accessible, affordable and aspirational. Massive congratulations to Grenville Ham, Chris Blake and all at TGV Hydro. These are local people who are responding to the call for more action on climate change with practical solutions that also help to sustain farming and rural ways of life.
