S I might have mentioned before, I am a slave to late night television, although even my tolerance for large quantities of excrement is being tested by the 975th episode of ‘Diners Drive-Ins and Dives’. A lot of my late night viewing consists of soaking up hastily banged together clips programmes like ‘The Roots of Socks ‘n’ Holes’ or ‘The 100 Best Al Bums of All Time’ or ‘The History of Pamela Motown’. While watching this old tripe which always features the same bunch of over enthusiastic talking heads and the bits of early music footage you have seen a 1000 times before, it has come to my notice that Elvis has been rejuvenated and restored to his former glory in order to fulfill the needs of the 21st century. 30 years, 20 years, even 10 years ago everyone’s memory of Elvis has been of a fat old bloke in a white jump suit performing in Vegas for a bunch of middleaged Americans, before passing away seated on the khazi, eating deep-fried peanut butter and jelly toasties. However, lately, Elvis is back to his hard-rocking, 1955 slim, handsome, leg-shaking prime. The most likely clips you will see these days are of Elvis singing Hound Dog on the Milton Berle Show or Ed Sullivan or best of all, live on stage in the afternoon in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1956. The same sort of thing seems to be happening to Four Moptops as the passage of time gently compresses history. The long-haired, squabbling Eastmans and Ono’s of the 1970s are being pushed back into the shade and the wisecracking, be-suited Cavern loving Beatles of 1964 are slowly replacing them in our affections. It’s an interesting transformation and although Elvis is dead and so re-writing his history is relatively easy, Paul and Ringo are still with us and popping up all the time on award shows and chat shows to let us gloat over how shiny black Paul’s hair is becoming and how boring Ringo really is without the other three. But still, the TV clips would have us believe they are 23 years old and the girls all go ape when the boys go ‘She loves, you, yeah, yeah, yeah’. Small Ads 4 What I’m wondering is how can I pull Philosophy 6 this trick off in my own life. I want people to look at me and not just see a drunk old git rambling on about electric bikes. I Art 8 want them to see a young, optimistic 22 year old, just off to India in an ex-army Art workshops 12 truck with a head full of dreams and a pocketful of... well nothing really. (And by Cinema 20 the way, son, ditch those taupe suede jeans). Or maybe people will be able to Dance 24 see me striding down the empty streets of that fusty old market town Hay-on-Wye, Food 26 just having abandoned London to live in the country with a head full of dreams and a pocketful of... Jesus, are you still wearing those jeans? Haven’t you even Music 28 had them dry-cleaned since you got back from Afghanistan? Music workshops 41 Maybe not. At least the music scene round here beats the hell out of 1972. Venues 43 In ‘72 Hay-on-Wye didn’t even have a cafe, let alone a restaurant, let alone two Band directory 44 full festivals and fringe events with a couple of thousand musicians, comedians, philopshers and writers blocking up the bloody streets. And the rest of the area Theatre 46 is not doing so badly either. Comedy of Errors D

AME Edna Everage, surely one of the 20th century’s most neglected philosophers, says she’s blessed with a rare and precious gift - the ability to laugh at other people’s misfortunes. Unfortunately I lack that ability but have been blessed with a similar gift, or more accurately, an opportunity: the chance to enjoy the wonderful mistakes made by university students in their written work. If you work with students you are guaranteed a rich treasure-trove of blunders to help you while away the endless university holidays. Some of them were so spectacular it seemed only right to record them and it’s a pleasure to share just a few of them with you. A young woman studying the philosophy of art produced an essay about some of her favourite 19th century painters. The students had been told not to use reference books but instead to rely solely on what they already knew. She identified her chosen artists as Old Man Hunt, Dante Gabrielle Rosetti and John Everett Millar [her spellings]. Better known, according to her, as the ‘Three Raphaelites’. Priceless or what? Another student, writing what turned out to be a thoughtful essay on the concept of miracle, announced that Jesus is believed to have been born by ‘spontaneous combustion’. She meant, of course, immaculate conception. Close enough, surely? A serious student exploring the idea of literacy argued coherently that spelling should be taught at school. She was consistent throughout in her spelling of ‘childeren’. In the same essay she informed me that schools were governed by ‘HMS Inspectors’. God bless them and all who sail in them! In the 1970’s and 80’s you were over the moon if students knew about fullstops and capital letters. More arcane phenomena, such as the apostrophe, were clearly from some other planet. One student and she was far from alone - had no idea whatsoever how to use this, so I decided to discuss it with her to help overcome the deficiency. It soon became all too clear that not only was she unaware of how the apostrophe is used, she had never actually heard of one. So I pointed to an example in her essay. She smiled a radiant smile of recognition and said, ‘Oh, you mean tadpoles!’ Foolish of me to have got the technical terminology so wrong. The topic of a history lesson was the design of medieval castles. The student announced that they were ‘motte and bailey’ constructions and then drew one on the blackboard. When a pupil asked him WHY they were so called he explained that Motte and Bailey were the names of the architects who built them. Of course they were. You might be excused for thinking that no mistakes would be made by philosophy students regarding the names of philosophers they were studying. Perish the thought. The following are a mere sample from my collection of gems:

Hair Haygel The Little Red Book by Wittgenstein Renee Descartes What is striking is that many of the students who committed these atrocities were far from dim; in fact a few were exceptionally bright. They were simply products of their generation, a generation in which spelling, punctuation and writing-skills were not flavours of the month. Many such students had passed through an education system at primary and secondary levels where literacy seemed pretty low on the agenda. Small wonder, then, that the apostrophe went down the educational plughole. An education professor asked me to talk to his students about Plato’s Theory of Forms. Near the date of the lecture the professor’s young secretary - very charming but a long way from intellectually exciting sent me a memo reminding me that I had agreed to lecture on ‘Pluto’s Theory of Farms’. Why not? We all make mistakes. I generally aim for about 5-a-day, on the basis that mistakes, like fruit and other roughage, keep you in good shape and give you the energy to face the vicissitudes of life. The trick with mistakes, of course, is to learn from them. But to state the obvious, this can happen only if the mistakes have been acknowledged. The trouble is, too many people think themselves immune from error and so take a dim view of having their mistakes pointed out. It’s a source of endless curiosity to see how someone can believe something to be true even when it’s demonstrably false. I once showed some students an optical illusion in which two straight lines of identical length appeared not to be identical. A student was adamant that one WAS longer than the other. He measured the two lines with a ruler. Was he convinced? Not a bit. ‘Something’s wrong with the ruler’, he said. Philosopher-in-Residence

THE DOUBLE Impressively besting his quirky directorial debut (and Welshfilmed) SUBMARINE, the IT CROWD’s Richard Ayoade’s second feature melds Kafkaesque vulnerability with the dark humour of Terry Gilliam’s BRAZIL. Jesse Eisenberg in his most accomplished outing since THE SOCIAL NETWORK, plays meek office drone Simon James, alternately berated and ignored by his boss, Mr Papadopoulos (A LATE QUARTET’s Wallace Shawn, creepily magnificent), and taunted by Hannah (Mia Wasikowska, STOKER), the diffident co-worker he lusts after. But a spry new recruit – confusingly called James Simon and his exact doppelganger, (Eisenberg again, obviously) – joins the drab, anonymous organisation and oils his way into Mr Papadopoulos’ favour and Hannah’s embrace. UNDER THE SKIN A cool, striking brunette (Scarlett Johansson) drives a battered old van around Scotland seducing unremarkable men who she despatches in a bizarre manner just as they’re about to realise their sexual good fortune. Jonathan Glazer, who’s short but distinguished filmography includes SEXY B E A S T a n d B I RT H , h e r e creates an agreeably surreal work of science-fiction which proves that whilst her character’s motives – apart perhaps from an intense female misogyny – remain unclear and her actions predictably repetitive, Johansson can hold our endless attention as well as an entire movie. Supported by some fine, upcoming actors including Antonia Campbell-Hughes (KELLY + VICTOR) and Paul Brannigan (ANGELS’ SHARE), the lesser characters’ motives, and often their heavy Scottish brogue, are equally opaque but ultimately this is a satisfying, highly original thriller. PIONEER Deep-sea diving brothers Petter (Aksel Hennie) and Knut (Andreas Eriksen) are employed by an American company charged with bringing home the liquid gold discovered off their Norwegian coast. The dangers of drilling in such deep waters are highlighted when Knut’s mask is smashed and Petter desperately carries him back to the surface only to find his life hanging by a thread. However the Americans, led by devious supervisor Ferris (Stephen Lang, AVATAR), are more concerned with commercial advantage than human life. The consequences of the brothers’ ordeal and the hard realities of pumping the oil back to land create an edgy narrative common to recent Scandinavian film drama (think A HIGHJACKING, HEADHUNTERS, THE HUNT), given added impact by a razor sharp script, impressive underwater cinematography and eerie soundtrack.

WORKSHOPS FLICKS IN THE STICKS Flicks in the Sticks has been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund to mark the First World War Centenary. Le Verre A Pied and The Jolly Frog

R PERNICKETY with his lovely companion (and bride of last summer) were being constantly reminded by caring friends that they’d yet to indulge in the post-nuptial tradition of a honeymoon. A week at the Druidstone on the Pembrokeshire coast with the LC and the Children’s Menu Consultant last summer didn’t really count. Et donc – as Mr P likes to say – a plan was made, and last week he and Mrs P set off on the speedy iron horse beneath Le Manche to spend a few days in Paris – city of cities and former gastronomic heaven. Mr P isn’t going to drone on about everything he ate, or how Macdonalds appearing on the Champs Elysées and under the arches of the Rue de Rivoli makes him feel, but in case just a few readers of the Woolly Organ might venture that far in the nearish future, he’d like to suggest a particularly engaging place to eat, drink, chat, read or philosophise. At 118bis, Rue Moufftarde, Paris 5 (a busy street in the 5eme, full of au-

thentic food shops and stalls) the LC, with her unerring eye for these things, loved the look of a small bistro, Un Verre a Pied. This turned out to be as charming within, and outstanding for the rich patina of its fittings, all original and unspoiled by ‘improvement’. With furniture and ambience to match, perfect small bistro food and (rare in modern Paris) good value from breakfast onwards, it is run by an affable chap and his engaging wife and son. Talking of jolly frogs, before they went to France, Mr P and the LC booked in for dinner at the special, early price at The Jolly Frog, near Leintwardine. Mr P has, of course, reviewed this startlingly (and not in a good way) pink place in an earlier edition of the Wooly Org, but not since the arrival of Andy Thomas as chef. Mr P will declare an interest, in so far as he has known Andy since he was a spotty young shaver washing pots in the kitchen at the Charlton Arms at least three chefs ago. He graduated to a long stint working under Will Holland at La Bécasse (a tough task-master), when Mr P once encountered him up on Bringewood Chase at this very time of year foraging for fresh wild garlic for his boss. Andy was then taken on as assistant chef at the Riverside in Aymestery, where Mr P ate sever-

al times with approval. And now, still young, though spotless, he is head chef and general major-domo at the Jolly Frog. Last time Mr P reviewed the place, he was only moderately happy with the food, and bemoaned the loss of the old Frog’s patina and personality after extensive over-refurbishment. This aspect has not changed; the walls are still pristine behind a somewhat characterless ‘display’ of bits and pieces, instead of an individual’s accumulation of intriguing and decorative objets. Mr P fears it will be a long time before it regains the affection-arousing sense of intimacy it once had. However..... he noted the good jazz playing as he walked in, the simple checked coton plastifié table cloths, the little table light, the jug of water that appeared without having to be nagged for, the delicious bread and herby butter that kicked off their dinner. The LC liked her Pinot Grigio, Mr P his young Rioja – both house wines. Mr P started his dinner with Ham Hock, Pickled Quails’ Eggs & Puy Lentils which almost took him by surprise they were so good, with lovely strong contrasting flavours. The LC was just as pleased with her Baked Oysters, Parsley Parmesan & Pernod. They felt that dinner had got off to an exceptional start, as good they could have anywhere in the area, and at £5.50 a throw! Knowing the Frog’s tradition for fish, the LC had a Roast Plaice in Meuniere Butter for her main course. It was, she said, a great deal better then the last fish she’d had there under the previous chef, and she couldn’t fault it, although like Mr P she objected to the wonky, triangular-shaped plate on which it was served. Odd shaped plates may have a role to play in

productions of Abigail’s Party, but not in a serious restaurant. In fact, the flat, edgeless and slippery wooden platter on which Mr P’s Steak Tagliata was served was the only thing he could object to (along with the waitress ordering him and the LC to ‘Enjoy!’ as if they were in the San Fernando Valley, c.1995). The Steak Tagliata was a new dish and a great success – tenderised steak on a superthin dough base from the excellent wood fired pizza oven, served with watercress pesto and parmesan. These main courses weighed in at just £15 a head, so Mr P decided to go for broke, and have puddings, too. His Strawberries with Vanilla Panacotta, Chantilly Crème & Meringue offered a fine balance to the whole dinner; the LC, though, found her glazed rhubarb delicious, but a tad heavy – but then, it takes little to fill her delicate frame. The Menu Prix-Fixe offers a good variety of dishes at lunch and for those ordering dinner between 6.00 and 7.00pm. At £16.50 for two courses, or £22 for three, this represents remarkable value for the quality of cuisine emanating from young Andy Thomas’s kitchen – better than anything Mr P and the LC had in Paris at twice the price. green door LILAC CO-HOUSING An idea that became reality

LITTLE over six years ago LILAC was just a group of ordinary people from Leeds, talking about a Low Impact housing project. Now those who needed homes and worked so hard to make the idea a reality have moved in. Good Idea The project idea was first discussed back in 2006. The group wanted to be able to live well on local wages, in comfortable homes that didn’t waste resources or damage the environment. “We had a vision to build our own homes,” recalls Paul Chatterton, a founder member of LILAC. They officially formed as a co-op with a grant of £4,000 in 2009. Paul adds “We talked to anyone and everyone about how we might pull this off.” The defining moment was when the project found the right piece of land. They bought 1.7 acres that had previously been an old school site from Leeds County Council. Twenty households were planned, complete with allotments. Low Impact Building Low Impact Housing is increasingly important to people. It is also entirely possible. The houses were built from a modern pre fabricated system with very high levels of insulation and they included local materials, notably straw bales. Windows were triple glazed with a ventilation system that circulates fresh air without heat loss. This is not a low-tech approach. For example, the architects have included monitoring sensors to provide a warning in case moisture should accidentally get into the straw. There is

also solar hot water and PV. Water collection and usage is combined with a sustainable drainage system (known as SUDS). Shared space The dwellings include family houses, flats, allotments and a common house. The common house includes accommodation for visitors, a meeting room, a laundry room and shared tool shed/workshop. There is also a bike shed and a car share club, which has allowed the planning guideline for 2 car parking spaces just outside each flat/ house to be waived and replaced by reduced car parking on the periphery and “a brilliant car free hub in the middle.” Affordable The financing system is quite clever. It’s designed around a co-operative with mutual tenure. The mortgage is paid back collectively, based on a percentage of income, with a clause to allow, for example, for an individual contributor losing his/her job. The land itself has been transferred into permanent ownership of the co-op. this means you can purchase property at a lower price. To give you an idea, a one bed flat costs £88,000 with minimal day-to-day living costs due to the overall design of the buildings. The defining factors that make the LILAC development healthy and affordable to live in include super insulation, solar water heating, allotments and shared facilities.
