What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches
The Animals Came in Two by Two I
KNOW my place in this magazine. I know I’m just the fluff on the top, a little amuse-bouche before everyone gets down to the serious business of art exhibitions, dance classes and hairy R & B bands playing in grimy pubs. But, occasionally, (believe it or not), weighty matters of international import skim across my brain “Look there goes one now! What did it say? What did it mean? Damn, missed it”. Anyway, last week I had a ‘big thought’ and since all the friends I’ve tried to tell about it just raise their eyebrows and go back to discussing whether The Bridge is superior to The Killing, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to dump it on you. It started with all this noise about the centenary of the First World War. I was reflecting on how lucky people of my age are to have been born after the Second World War, but to have just skipped out of National Service and to have had 60+ years of uninterrupted peace in mainland Britain, (although not so lucky if you live in Belfast). Straight after this the newspapers, last week, were discussing the new F35 jets we (not me you idiots, the government) are buying at a cost with spares and stuff of one billion pounds. These are American jets that won’t be in business until 2020 and they have been procured to go onto two brand new massive aircraft carriers which are costing us six billion! There seems to me to be an awful lot of worrying aspects to these two purchases, not least of which is - are they are actually going to be any use to us even if we were to embark on another series of stupid conflicts in the 2020s? My guess is that with the current speed of technological change, people are probably going to be fighting with drones and other computer operated robotic vehicles by then and we won’t have much use for blokes in fur-lined leather jackets and goggles racing about going ‘ack ack ack ack ack ack’... all over the sky. My other thought as we collectively waded through the knee deep water of last week’s floods was that we might find by 2020 the enemy is not North Korean bombers, but the planet itself and the only use we have for an aircraft carrier is to fill it up with two of every species and set sail. Incidentally, Google informs me there are eight and a half million species of plants and animals, so thank God it’s a big aircraft carrier. Anyway, even this wasn’t big enough to be my ‘big thought’. Small Ads 4 Two days later, the centre pages of The Guardian consisted of a three page Sam’s page 6 diagram illustrating the shocking fact that if we pull out of Afghanistan in the next six months, it will be the first time for 100 years we have not been at war. Art 8 Extraordinary - every day since 1914 we’ve been off fighting somebody. Some Art workshops 12 of these conflicts you will be well aware of, i.e. World War I, World War II, NorthCinema 16 ern Ireland, Falklands etc. But some of them are a complete surprise. Did you Dance 20 know we were fighting in Oman from 1963 until 1976 or that in 1918 we were Food 22 part of an international coalition against the Bolsheviks, or that we had already Music 24 had troops in Iraq from 1919 until 1932? Yes folks, it transpires we are the most aggresive nation in the world, even beating U.S.A. and the notoriously triggerMusic workshops 32 happy French. Fortunately, since Iraq the country, does seem less willing to Venues 35 embark on anymore bloody ‘peace-keeping’ mission and after Cameron allowed Band directory 36 Parliament to actually vote on whether we went into Syria, it seems possible we Theatre 38 might vote our way out of the next few conflicts. But hey, here’s the ‘Big Idea.’ Word 42 What say we follow up our 100 years of warmongering with a nationally agreed 100 years of peace on earth and goodwill to all men. Let’s not spend the seven Green pages 46 billion on potentially useless armaments, lets spend it on hospital ships and rapid Comp therapies 48 response medical helicopters and other such useful gear. Think how much goodwill that would generate around the world turning up We take no at conflict zones to save lives instead of shooting people! I realise that that responsibility for might leave a lot of people employed by defence industry out of a job, but that the veracity of the is great because all those expensive military budgets can now be spent on new information herein technologies to combat the real enemy - climate change. Hurrah, everyone’s a Pete Mustill winner and I’ll be made P.M. I’ll go on Newsnight and Paxo will say to me “I’m Mayfield, Stapleton, sorry Pete, I have no embarrassing questions to ask you - you’re perfect and Nr Presteigne, Powys you’ve solved the world’s problems at a stroke”. And then I’ll wake up. E have been indulging in a bit of tourism in the high mountains of Mallorca lately. Walking the high mule-tracks, y’know. Quite like the Marches, a little home from home, really, except that the wine is a lot cheaper and the sheep are a bit smaller and everything is bright blue (sky) and bright orange (oranges) instead of the colour of wet grey flannel (Herefordshire). Obviously we have been thinking about a lot of things. For instance. There we were about 3000 feet above sea level and someone says, ‘Look at that frowning crag.’ There it was, beetling at a valley of green fields and vineyards. But what, I found myself thinking, if it was actually a smiling crag, and this frowning was merely the natural expression of its cliff-face in repose? Was I, indeed, being craggist? Then there were these baby goats hopping to and fro on a rock, colour of chocolate, and someone said, ‘Aren’t they sweet?’ And the thought came into my mind that perhaps they were actually rather bitter. I mean they live largely on twigs and stones, and some time or other someone is going to come along and put them in a stew, or cocido as we say round these parts. Sweet? I rather think not. I was in the presence (I decided, as we walked on) of what the great novelist Flaubert called idees reçues, which is to say the idea-clichés the bourgeoisie uses to spare itself the necessity of actually thinking. So the boots went one after another up the mule track, left, right, left, right, and more things cropped up for reinterpretation. There was a babbling brook, for instance, which should conventionally have been talking nonsense. What, though, if it was declaiming an epic in Brookish, a language hard to understand unless you were another brook? It is the tragedy of brooks’ lives that they are seldom within earshot of each other. And also, come to think of it, that Nature has not provided them with ears. While we were wrestling with this notion a single swallow flew overhead. Conventionally, one swallow does not make a summer. Well, the air was warm, and the sun was shining, and there was the swallow. As far as we were concerned, a summer was exactly what it made – not a very long one or a very hot one, but a sort of summerette, lasting half an hour or so. And very nice too. Soon we will be home. The rain will be coming down like stair-rods, which are delightful things, made of brass and enhancing the domestic environment. People will be whining on Facebook, home from home of the bourgeois idea-cliché. There are people who might be depressed by the fact that the world, currently a Renaissance tapestry of blue sky and orange oranges, will once more be made of wet grey flannel. Not me. I will take it to the lady in Kington and she can make me a suit out of it. Sam Llewyllen

MATHEW McCONAUGHEY – His Name Isn’t Mud Beginning in 1993 with silly student rom-com DAZED AND CONFUSED, and since embracing thoughtful sci-fi drama (CONTACT) and meretricious tosh (MAGIC MIKE), two recently released films confirm the progress of 44 year-old Mathew McConaughey toward true Hollywood gold status – otherwise defined as a single name guaranteeing a box-office jackpot. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB is the most remarkable of these, with McConaughey transformed from his normal muscular self to an almost skeletal 1980s rodeo roustabout, Ron Woodroof, whose wilder sexual excesses reward him with AIDS. His response segues quickly from angry denial into a determination to beat the odds and survive, primarily by sourcing drugs that the U.S. authorities deemed illegal, and then with a hitherto untypical munificence, making them available to other sufferers. This he and his unlikely transsexual partner, Rayon (Jared Lito, best known for 2005’s LORD OF WAR), achieve by ingeniously skirting the law with the eponymous ‘Buyers Club’. Both leads are hugely impressive but it’s McConaughey’s emotional range and restless energy that dominate the movie, shot by French Canadian Jean-Marc Vallée in record time on a minimal budget because the subject matter proved Hollywood poison. Indeed whilst McConaughey was still recovering from his emaciated BUYERS CLUB persona, he put on a scene-stealing show as Mark Hanna, the philosophically corrupt, coke-fiend trader who mentors the wannabe tycoon (Leonardo DeCaprio, also Hollywood gold) in THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. By turns hilarious, ruthless and willfully self-indulgent, it’s an utterly mesmerising performance. Fact is, McConaughey does mesmerising as well, if not better, than any actor of his generation, possibly excepting John Cusack who, coincidentally, co-starred in THE PAPERBOY, Lee Daniels’ (THE BUTLER) gripping thriller in which a hot-shot reporter (McConaughey) revisits his sleepy Florida hometown to investigate a raciast murder. Co-starring Zac Efron as his dopey brother and Nicole Kidman in an extraordinary, award-winning turn as a trailer-trash convict groupie, THE PAPERBOY was my ‘most underrated film’ of 2012 (okay, along with HOLY MOTORS) and well worth a DVD rental. But for now 2013’s MUD is well worth catching at Abergavenny Film. Soc. and playing a mysterious loner living beside the Mississippi befriended by two wide-eyed teenagers, McConaughey give another nuanced performance which, as with 2011’s darkly compulsive KILLER JOE, proves that the actor now has little need for major co-stars. The Charlton Arms, Ludlow
T
HE Charlton Arms (the ‘Charlie’) is the bestsited pub in Ludlow. In 2007 it was extended and refurbished, when a decked terrace was created at second floor level, overlooking the Teme and providing a wonderful view of the Castle and St Laurence’s Church, albeit obscured by a broad rail, foolishly placed exactly at eye height for seated punters. Despite the comprehensive reordering, somehow the revamped Charlie never seemed to realise its full potential. There were too many things not quite right about it. Mr P is delighted that now the former landlord has decided to go, he has been replaced by a charming, energetic Frenchman, Cedric Bosi, already known in the area since his brother, Claude, arrived to open, cook and earn a brace of Michelin Stars at Hibiscus in Corve Street. In 2007, Claude went to London where punters are thicker on the ground, while Cedric stayed on to run the Bell at Yarpole whose lease the brothers had taken on two years before. Despite the success he’d made of it (earning a Bib Gourmand), in 2010 he also left, no doubt frustrated by the selfdefeating terms imposed by big, heinous PubCos. In London he helped his brother open two gastro pubs, but such was his fondness for the Marches that when the opportunity arose, he returned. One visit to the front bar (now humming again with old regulars who’ve started coming back) and a second, for dinner in the restaurant with his Lovely Companion, have been enough to show Mr Pernickety that after just a week, the Charlie is back on the right track. Although the inside of the pub is clearly still work in progress, most of the clumsy excesses of the old interior have been removed; the beastly swirly carpets have gone, the clumpy furniture has been arranged in a less clumpy way (though surely those ubiquitous, saggy-seated high-backed ‘leather’ chairs should be on their way out?) and two of the stained glass horrors have been moved. The lighting is warm, soft and relaxing, helped by clusters of candles on the sills of the full length windows. The menu is honest and unpretentious, in a way which seems to reflect the area’s natural bounty. Mr P is unsure of the origins of the new chef, and on the night he ate, the sous-chef was in charge. In any event, the food he and the LC were served more than confirmed the menu’s promise. Mrs P wanted Devilled Potted Shrimps and was pleased by the subtlety of the devilling; there was, she said approvingly, just enough of a hint of chilli to give the dish its distinctiveness, without burning her rosy cheeks. Opposite her, Mr P was soon smacking his lips over the lovely combination of Garlic and Lemon Button Mushrooms on Sourdough Toast. Unfortunately, though, their starter was let down by his choice of wine
22
– an Italian Chardonnay. Mr Pernickety often samples the cheapest wine on a restaurant’s list, not simply out of parsimony, but also as a gauge for the rest of the list. Carelessly, he’d forgotten that Italians treat their chardonnay grape entirely differently to the French, or the Antipods. This was sharp and a little sour, with none of the fruitiness that grape can deliver. House wines are helpfully offered in half-litre pichets – good for diligent drivers and the liver-conscious. For his second 500ml pichet (at £12.85) Mr P ordered what was described as an ‘easy-going Rioja with a soft underbelly of raspberry, strawberry and red cherry’, which sounds like an alcopop, but turned out to be a good, light version of the genre. It went well with Mr P’s Belly Pork with Cider Sauce, Bubble & Squeak, and a stilton-stuffed apple (£13). This offered an original, stimulating palette of flavours, although to cavil a little, Mr P found the sauce was fairly bland, failing to compensate for a lack of moistness in the belly pork, but the overall effect was unusual and tasty. The LC was thrilled with her rare Rump of Lamb (£14) on a tump of mash, backed up by a delicious dish of haricot beans, chorizo, mint and coriander. For pudding, she thought it would be fun to compare the Charlie’s Lemon Posset with the somewhat concrete example she’d eaten with Mr P at the otherwise likeable Tally Ho at Bouldon. This posset arrived looking lovely, with four small raspberries on top. Mr P immediately ordered a second spoon, and agreed with his spouse that it was as it should be, soft, lemony and light, and, he added dreamily, as sweet as a maiden’s kiss. The service was outstanding for this part of the world, and the bill, at c. £40 a head, not out of the way. Mr Pernickety is delighted to see The Charlton Arms revived and looks forward to many revisits. Mr Pernickety, www.misterpernickety.com email: info@misterpernickety.com Twitter: @mpernickety

Happy March!
B
Y the time you read this it will be March and, hopefully the floods will have subsided and emergency COBRA meetings will have concluded and politicians everywhere in the UK will have been able to pack their wellies away. Or probably. And if so, this will be nice for them, especially as there is an election coming up quite soon. And after all, nobody really wants to be filmed for the news, standing knee deep in murky water trying hard to avoid the subject of climate change, whilst being heckled in the background by people trying to rescue their dogs in canoes. 200 Mazillion Farmers So I thought I’d write about something happy for March instead. And then my friend Lin came along and asked me to write about seeds and growing food and a fantastic movement of peasant farmers across the world and I thought yes, this is what we need, something about growing food and spring. So may I introduce La Via Campesina, which translates as The Peasants Way. It’s an international movement of some 200 million small and middle-scale producers, agricultural workers and indigenous communities from Asia, Africa, America, and Europe, including 150 rural organisations from around the world, all supporting family-farm-based sustainable agriculture. La Via Campesina was the group that first coined the term food sovereignty – meaning the right to produce food on one’s own territory. The movement has carried out several campaigns, including an ongoing one to defend farmer’s seeds from corporate patents by opposing new laws that give multinationals like Monsanto a monopoly over seed and seed varieties. Who Owns the Seeds? Seeds are part of our common heritage. They have been passed from farmer to farmer for generations. Year upon year the best seeds from the strongest plants have been selected, in clever, peasant-ish ways. Today each variety carries a certain a set of attributes, especially adapted to country, region, climate and soil. These wonderful seeds are very valuable little things. And these seeds are the very first link in the food chain. They are fundamental to survival and to locally based and independent food production. If we have seeds and soil and
46
seasons then we also have the ability to feed our families or our community without having to pay some massive company for the privilege. So why shouldn’t these seeds stay in the hands of the farmers, who sowed, bred, saved and exchanged them for thousands of years? To be fair, seed laws were introduced for a very good reason: to prevent unscrupulous seed merchants from selling poor-quality seed. There are some very sensible testing regimes around seed and plant health to reduce diseases, and protect consumers, which is all fine. One law that La Via Campesina took exception to was the EU Plant Reproductive Material Law, which set rules for the propagation and marketing of seeds and propagating material of agricultural crops. At first glance this new law was about ensuring productivity, health, quality and diversity of plant reproductive material. However, because of the rigorous testing and quality controls that would be set for seeds, so that they could go on the market commercially, there was no way small scale farmers and gardeners who routinely save their own seeds at the present time could have afforded to take part or compete. And so with nothing in the proposed legislation that allowed small-scale producers exemption, this was actually an opportunity for the wealthy and powerful corporates to get their hands on the rest of our seeds by law. Fair and Shared On Tuesday 11th February, the European Parliament Agriculture Committee voted to reject the proposal of the European Commission on Plant Reproductive Material. The full Parliament will vote on this in a few weeks’ time and if it also rejects the draft law on seeds, the whole proposal will have to go back to the drawing board. If you want to help keep seed ownership fair and shared, in the hands of the family sized farmers and growers you can 1. Keep diversity alive: buy some open-pollinated varieties and save your own seed. 2. Organise local seed swaps 3. Support small seed and plant companies by buying from them. And here are two useful websites for more info http://viacampesina.org/en/ www.gardenorganic.org.uk
