‘We go there so you don’t have to’ 1. TILES - Don’t talk to me about tiles. I’ve seen enough of the things

to last me a lifetime. Every square inch of the bloody town is covered. If it doesn’t move, slap some tiles on it. The net result is like living in some crazy five-mile wide toilet. The pavements are mosaic stonework, the roads are cobbles, the houses are covered in tiles, the whole town is divided up into a trillion tiny little squares. It seems that in 1755, an earthquake knocked the whole place down and some dodgy tile maker must have snapped up the rebuild contract. “Naa mate, they’re the safest building material in the world, no worries. Tell you what, I’ll tile the whole flaming city for €5,000!” But that’s only half the story. Once the posh people up the hill got wind of all the tiling going on, they had to go one better. So if you pop up to Benfica for a bit of a gander at the Palácio dos Marqueses da Fronteira, I kid you not, the whole gaff looks like King Ludvig II’s khazi! To steal the famous Monroe phrase - ‘This Paláciao has tiles in places that other Palácios don’t even have places’. 2. BIKES - Cobbles, tramlines, one-way streets, crazy drivers, 1:4 hills, even when there is a cycle lane it’s covered in dumb American tourists wandering about aimlessly staring at tiles, or bands of Germans on rental electric Segways careering along out of control. It’s really no place for a mild-mannered electric cyclist like myself. What’s more, the city sprawls about like a 14 year old and it takes about half a days hard riding to get to the city limits. Still if you must persist, you could do worse than go down to Zeev-Electric vehicle rentals and hitch up with our mate Xavier. “Ah Peter, Peter, you and Alison are the most wonderful customers I have ever had. Come over here, I must give you a great big hug”. “Er, hmm, exactly how long have you been in this job Xavier?” “Ah Peter, Peter, two days”. Zeev also have electric cars for hire, including a lot of Renault Twizzys and a rather nice Tazzari Zero two-seater runabout. I asked for a map of the charging points around Lisbon which I’d spotted in many of the car parks. “Ah Peter, Peter, I’m so sorry, our Prime Minister was very keen for these to be installed in all locations, but sadly very few of them are connected to the electric supply”. 3. FADO - Don’t worry, the most famous Lisbon music form Fado is as ubquitous as Small Ads 4 the tiles, it’s everywhere, restaurants, bars, clubs, there is even a Fado museum. In its simplest and most common set up, it consists of a Spanish guitarist who plays chords and Philosophy 6 bass line, a Portugese guitarist (a bit like a large 12-string mandolin) who plays the twiddly Art 8 bits and the singer, who is very much in control, picks the tempo, key and the songs. Can We Have a Word, Please? H

ERE’S a puzzle for you, to take your mind off having to read the rest of this wayward article: what would it probably be difficult to do if you were under five feet tall and lived in Glasgow? You need a clue? Well, it would probably be significantly easier if you were six feet tall and lived anywhere south of Birmingham. The answer is it would probably be very difficult to.... Now there’s the rub. We simply don’t have the word. It’s not in the dictionary. The adjective is there alright, so is the noun, but the verb just does not exist. Your philosopher-in-residence has submitted it to the commissioning editors of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary but so far in vain. They cannot bring themselves to give the word, and me, that little bit of immortality. It would save us all a heap of time if only we had the verb. Instead of lumbering through statements such as ‘her degree of condescension, an admixture of hauteur and arrogance, is tantamount to conceited superciliousness’, we could simply use the verb - ‘the blighter SNOOTS’. ‘This is all marginally interesting’, I hear you say, ‘but what’s the reference to height, and where do Glasgow and the South come into the picture?’ Well, extensive research and observation have produced various conclusions which I am, as ever, delighted to share with you. First, tall people have an obvious advantage: they can naturally look down on other people. They are, so to speak, ahead by a nose [the ideal thing for looking down]. Secondly, an important piece of evidence is that not a single one of Snow White’s little chums was called Snooty. Thirdly, all of the ‘snooters’ - a further deficiency in the S.O.D., by the way - of my acquaintance are in the six foot bracket. Fourthly, there is a clear statistical correlation between the distribution of snooters and geography: the further south you go, the greater incidence of snootering. However, Broad Sheep’s legal department have advised me to make one point crystal clear, namely, that whereas the majority of snooters are tall and live in the south this in no way implies that all tall southerners are, in fact, snooters. The legal department advises me to make this logical distinction very clear, in the interests of honesty, in the interests of avoiding prosecution and in the interests of not being duffed up in some dark alley. Let’s play the game called ‘Spot the Snooter’. We know, of course, that snooters are born not made. To them snooting comes naturally and is not a product of education or training. It’s just how they are. So what are the tell-tale signs?

For a start really accomplished snooters never, but never, make eye-contact even with people they see on a daily basis but who are not themselves snooters.

They communicate only with fellow snooters. They have this in-built faculty for locating others of the same ilk, like whales who can sense the presence of other whales twenty miles away. It’s an awesome gift. If they avoid even eye-contact with non-snooters then it goes without saying that conversation is completely out of the question. If someone asks you how you are or takes the slightest interest in you it’s without any doubt at all that they’re not a snooter - unless, of course, you yourself are one. Also they tend to dress somewhat oddly. Researchers in the field believe that this is to help other snooters to spot them. But again, let’s be clear. Not all people who dress oddly are snooters. And so the list goes on. But snooting does raise some philosophically interesting questions, don’t you think? One thing is for sure. It’s perilously easy to judge people, both snooters and non-snooters and to put them into pigeonholes. But on what criteria? Wealth, life-style, the way they speak? Their contribution to society? Here are a few real-life instances. That old man over there. Not much to look at, nothing special at all. Badly dressed, not much to say. Not worth talking to. Unless, that is, you really wanted to know what it’s like to be a multi-millionaire. And that gormless-looking girl with the weird hair and the even weirder outfit. To be avoided. Unless, that is, you wanted to find out how she raised ninety thousand pounds for charity. Or the scruffy chap in the corner, on his fifth pint. Not worth a second glance, unless, that is, you wished to know about his medals for bravery, one of them presented to him by the Queen. Snooting may be good fun. But it comes at a price. cinema IDA (12) 2013’s haunting London Film Festival winner from Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski (MY SUMMER OF LOVE) begins as Anna (Agata Trzebuchowska), a teenage novitiate is about to take her final vows in a rural convent. Fate intervenes when her hard-living aunt (veteran t.v. actress Agata Kuliesza) persuades the Mother Superior to let Anna visit her in Gdansk, whereupon her true identity as the titular Ida is revealed, and the two women face some harsh realities. Filming for the first time in his homeland, Pawlikowski uses gritty monochrome to successfully evoke the bleakness and anxiety of the communist era, which supplies the often unsettling dramatic thrust. The two leads, especially the luminous newcomer Trzebuchowska, perfectly convey the quietly complex emotions their characters struggle with. All reviews by Mark Williams

Two Feathers

The Feathers, Ledbury

EDBURY and Ludlow are two handsome market towns of the Marches, of about ten thousand souls apiece. Each has an abundance of charm, fine old buildings, cobbled ways, and historic hostelries. And each contains a large, 17th century timber-framed coaching inn of beauty and distinction, called The Feathers, the most important in their respective towns. Both hotels are independently owned and in an era of characterless homogeneity, any establishment with its individuality intact is usually in a better position to offer a more personal service than its multiple competitors, with all their corporate practices and constrictions. After a wearisome Sunday morning spent wandering through Malvern Flea Market, inspecting piles of junk – and unearthing the occasional gem – Mr P felt his Lovely Companion deserved a decent lunch, for it was her birthday. Finding little gastronomic inspiration on the show ground – not even in the ‘Cornish’ pasties on offer – Mr P chose to look further afield and headed for Ledbury, and Fuggles Bistro at the Feathers where Sunday lunch was being served, and ‘served’ in the best sense of the word. Mr P and the LC , with the Children’s Menu Consultant in tow, were impressed from the start of their visit by the high quality of service at the Feathers – a characteristic now distressingly rare in English provincial hotels. There is, in Mr P’s experience, real satisfaction to be had in being looked after by staff who are polite, considerate and knowledgeable, who evidently don’t believe that they are demeaning themselves by greeting a customer with the words, ‘Good morning, sir,’ rather than, say, ‘Hi, Guys!’ Polite, attentive service is a key part of delivering a satisfactory experience to diners, and it amazes Mr P how many places have entirely lost sight of this, however robust the quality of their cuisine. The quality of foods is important, too, of course, and although a Google search for the Feathers throws up a picture of the hotel with a Brakes Bros lorry parked outside it – posted either through mischief or some nefarious inducement – Mr P can report that the luncheon which he and the LC were served showed no sign of having been pre-prepared by any outside agency. Serving some (though not enough) of the wonderful local ales, along with distant imports like Doombar and London Pride, the bar is comfortable and individual, with pleasing, witty detail. The LC, however, inexorably sniffy about such things, was not pleased with the furnishing of the ladies’ loo with items she described as ‘faux-shabby, faux-chic’, as seen in a shop in Ludlow, which Mr P will have the good manners not to name but in whose window he recently noticed a bogusly battered sign painted with the words “CATS ARE JUST LITTLE PEOPLE with fur coats”. Fuggles Bistro is a warm and inviting space, decked with long bines of fresh Fuggles hops, furnished with comfortable seats, well-spaced tables and undisturbed by inappropriate music. Service was intelligent, prompt and exceptionally proficient, while the menu managed to be traditional and creative at the same time. As a small starter, Mr P the LC and her issue had three Hebridean scallops, tender and moist, served with

pesto, roquette, bacon and avocado, along with some excellent multigrain bread. The CMC, whose perspicacity grows along with his appreciation of alliteration, declared the scallops ‘sensationally seasoned’, while his face lit up with pleasure at their tender texture. The LC in a brief discussion with the waiter had specified that she would like her roast beef as rare as possible. He made sure that hers was carved from the centre of the joint, where it was as pink as she loves it, with a flavour and marbling that indicated well-hung Hereford beef. She was more than pleased with it, and applauded the boat of good ‘roasting juices’, placed beside her to slosh on as she pleased. Mr P ordered Loin of Venison on a bed of spiced cous cous, cumin roasted aubergine, coriander and cucumber oil, an imaginative combination he hadn’t eaten before. It turned out that the graininess of the cous cous made an enjoyably unusual contrast to the smoothness of the venison (which had been cooked successfully to retain its moistness). When the CMC’s Roast Leg of Welsh lamb with rosemary and garlic arrived, he gave it an instant double ‘thumbs up’ (which is quite rare) and sniffed the contents of the gravy boat. ‘Smells heavenly’ he said. With the meat dishes Mr P and the LC drank a bottle of Domain de la Soumade, Cote du Rhone 2011 – good quality at £20 a bottle – and rounded off the repast by helping themselves to some of the CMC’s tricoloured ice-cream scoops, with just the right sweetness to complete what had been a first-rate English Sunday luncheon. The Feathers in Ledbury may have flaws which Mr P didn’t spot, but in a place that clearly understands the need to consider the comfort and enjoyment of its customers, he thinks it highly unlikely it could ever sink to the depths achieved by its counterpart in Shropshire. The Feathers in Ludlow, while undoubtedly an architectural paean, with its plethora of elaborate Jacobean half-timbering, carved oak and two fine public rooms, as an hotel, is generally considered by the inhabitants of the town to be a disappointment, some would say a disaster, even a disgrace. Mr P has previously published his impressions in his Guide to Eating in Ludlow, and in this very organ. Since then he has eaten there only once, at an event which took place in the ersatz baronial hall at the rear of the building. The

dinner served was very poor, to the point of being almost inedible, and Mr P is still trying to summon up the fortitude to eat there again in order to give the restaurant a fair review – which will follow soon. Reports of the accommodation it offers are distressing, and it is a great sadness that it is not run in a way which allows Ludlovians to use such a wonderful building and be proud of it. HERE are tall trees just outside my window - Silver Birch, a Ginko, Copper Beech, Oak and the tallest of all is a Cypress. One of the trees has been the summer residence of a tawny owl family. There were three babies to begin with, but then came a sad story concerning lots of white fluff and feathers. Leaving two. By early summer the new guys were looking like this. At around this time flying and hunting lessons began in earnest. At first flying from a tree was a leap of faith, usually starting at about 3.00 a.m. in the morning and accompanied by lots of screeching and some occasional proper hooting. The first uncertain stages were quickly mastered however, and the general air of panic was replaced by one of enthusiasm. Different World It’s actually OK, to be woken up in the early hours to the sound of flying lessons, vocal exercises and hunting expeditions. The main flight path took the apprentices from a tree quite near the bedroom window to a tree on the far side of the house. Occasionally I even caught a glimpse of the trainees themselves as they skimmed the roof of our house, against the night sky. It’s a fantastic thing, natural flight at such close quarters. By August the owls seemed pretty adept at all skill sets, but nevertheless, training sessions continued long into September … You could say humans have constructed, within the real world of owls and suchlike, an entirely different world specially designed around finance. It’s a world that is complex and ambitious and compelling and to an extent it has taken over. Like a golem. So we don’t live free in the sense that the owl does, defined by nature. Instead we have financial choices … career opportunities and shopping trips etc … dotted along the hunting path of the capitalist economy. Litmus Test Into this situation, comes climate change. And if ever there was a litmus test… a measure of how the capitalist system is doing in the greater scheme of things … it’s climate change. Because the existence of climate change, as Naomi Klein writes so eloquently, changes everything. 2015 marks 23 years since the first climate treaty was signed at the Rio Earth Summit. The UK was the first country to set statutory targets for climate emissions in 2008. Now, 66 countries have climate legislation in place. But these last 23 years also reveal a globalised system struggling with its own demons. We haven’t seen a strong enough shift away from fossil fuels or any serious commitment to leave it in the ground, and

correspondingly we haven’t seen enough support for sustainable activity and solutions. In these circumstances, it’s hard NOT to criticise the corporates and financial institutions and politicians … or to have a go at the overly wealthy machines of climate denial. Paris 2015 2015, is regarded amongst many as a watershed year for climate change, with a particular focus on the Climate Summit to be held in Paris in December. Some say that the signs point at last to an effective and workable new global climate agreement. But don’t hold your breath, because this will be a battle, no doubt about that, and the odds are not stacked well. A strong agreement at the Paris Climate summit could transform action on the ground in every country. All the people working hard in their communities and in business to develop climate solutions to scale really do deserve this support from decision makers. Right now many great projects are having to compete against each other for often just tiny investment opportunities … little enough finance to pay wages, R&D, implementation etc, little enough to count. Some are folding and it’s a waste. But with an international agreement, market confidence could start to shift from coal and oil and gas to sustainable enterprise. Failure to agree a course of action at the Paris summit will be interpreted by many, who understand the science, as systemic failure. We need a response that is not just about economics but also survival. Which is why I’m watching the owls learning to fly. It begins with a leap of faith. Rachel Francis www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
