I

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

N THIS increasingly litiginous world it’s very important that one understands the terms and conditions under which one is purchasing a new washing machine/downloading some useless bit of crap from the internet/or booking a three week bungee jumping holiday in the Grand Canyon. Scarcely a minute goes by when one is not expected to tick a little box (and then of course, read 85 pages of incomprehensible bilge). Well, incomprehensible bilge is exactly what Broad Sheep is good at, so I see no reason why we can’t get in on the act. From now on, if you want to read Broad Sheep you will have to first sign a disclaimer and then agree to the TERMS & CONDITIONS and read them before ticking the appropriate little box. I think this will be a good way of weeding out the more undesirable readers especially those grockles who have just driven up to Llangorse Lake for three days windsurfing and have no business reading about what we locals do to amuse ourselves in the long winter months. DISCLAIMER I swear on the life of my sainted Grandma not to be moaning about Broad Sheep to my friends even if they print the same Ludlow Assembly Rooms Ad twice running. Signature TERMS & CONDITIONS Please read these carefully and then tick the appropriate box below. If you tick (b) there may be consequences. 1. I promise not to support any of Rupert Murdoch’s enterprises because he is the spawn of the devil, although one can’t help laughing in the supermarket queue at the most recent anti Corbyn front pages in the Sun. To wit ‘Corbyn Abolish The Army’; ‘New Leader’s Potty Plan for World Peace’; ‘Court Jezter - leftie who hates the Royals will Kiss Queen’s hand to Grab £6.2 million’. Special Proviso This embargo does not include the Sky Cycling team because it would be unpatriotic not to support Chris Froome (even if he is African), or the gallant Geraint Thomas (who is of course Welsh). 2. I agree to come to all the gigs in Presteigne*, even if its some poncey world music band or a sissy band with loads of girls in it. * Upcoming: La Qualia (poncey world music), Velvet Violin, featuring The Pindrop Band (poncey music and girls), The Turbans (lunatics), Velvet Violin - Dana Immanuel and the Stolen Band (all girls). By this point you will have gathered that I’ve never actually read a set of Terms & Conditions in my life, so I’ll include a real one that came in from Lloyds Bank today and see if you notice the difference. 10.18.3A A User may withdraw their consent for a Bulk Payment up until 5.30pm on the Business Day immediately before the Bulk Payment Instruction Date. However, in some cases an instruction for a Bulk Payment will be listed for several hours via the Service as a payment which has yet to be executed. If a Bulk Payment still appears as not having yet been executed then a User may be able to withdraw consent to such a Bulk Payment by ‘deleting’ the Bulk Payment via the Service. Alternatively we will make reasonable efforts to cancel a Bulk Payment if a User so requests by calling your Business Banking Team/Relationship Manager or Internet Banking Helpdesk. Understood? No, me neither. But I’ll try a bit harder to write something really good. 3. If Broad Sheep (referred to from now on as the 1st Party) is in receipt of information streams that it needs to communicate to its subscribers (that’s you the 2nd Party) then it’s possible that the 1st Party might organise a party and via the normal channels indicate the whereabouts of the party to the 2nd Party so that the 1st Party can converse with the 2nd Party at the aforementioned party assuming that the 2nd Party can get past the large security personel who will be keeping unwanted parties out of the party. a) I have read the terms and conditions and agree to abide by all of them. TICK BOX b) I have read the terms and conditions, but refuse to abide by them as this is another feeble excuse for an editorial. TICK BOX

Your Dad’s Dead M

Y good old friend Chas Ambler died a few weeks back. He was, for the best part of twenty years my partner-in-crime in top light entertainment duo, Your Dad. We played a lot in Presteigne, over the years, from our Bad Taste nights at the Hat Shop, through countless Sheep Musics, to our legendary recital of Bohemian Rhapsody at the Assembly Rooms, which came close to culminating in a riot. We played all over the UK, in bars, in theatres, in comedy clubs, at festivals. Once, I got punched. Once, we were threatened with death at a biker’s festival outside Wrexham. Once, Richard Hawley came up to us after a gig in Sheffield, and told us we were the best thing he’d seen in years, and that next time we played in Sheffield, he’d bring Jarvis. We never got another gig in Sheffield, needless to say. That we could always get a gig in Presteigne was due to the support of the Editor of this esteemed organ, whose musical collaboration with Chas goes back to before the dawn of time. Chas was one of the original members of Presteigne legends The Tango Band, and he went on the tour of Germany and Czechoslovakia where the band discovered Jan (Honza) Hruby. Pete conceived the idea of getting Honza to play in Presteigne, and thought he’d put on a little festival to make this happen. He called the festival Sheep Music. Chas played at that first festival, and I doubt he missed a one. Chas was a cantankerous old sod. He could be rude and thoughtless; and was funny enough to get away with it, if only just. He said to me once, ‘I’ve always been rude, and I will always BE rude.’ And he always was rude. Part of my job in Your Dad was to follow in his wake, apologising to organisers and sound guys, and I loved it all. We had nothing but great times, the rude old sod and I. I shall always miss him. I loved him, and I told him so. I loved his patience and kindness with me; loved his talent and passion for music; loved the laughs and scrapes we shared over nearly twenty years of working together. Above all, I just loved his company. The gigs were great, but they were always book-ended by long conversations in the van. We talked. A lot. We talked about politics, and music and love, and religion; and we talked about showbiz. Chas’s family have a history of working in show business which stretches back to the 1860’s; the novelist Eric Ambler was a distant cousin. Chas grew up in theatres, on bandstands, and at the end of the pier, and he told great stories about this extraordinary heritage. This is one of the many reasons he was so proud of his son Ben, who is following in this tradition. Chas died of oesophageal cancer within a year of being diagnosed. He died in a house in the beautiful Lancashire port village of Glasson Dock, nursed by friends. I was there on the night he died, and so was his son. He died as the tide in Morecambe Bay turned from flood to ebb. We held a wake ten days later, high in the Tatham Fells above Lancaster. His coffin stayed on stage as musicians from all over the country came to play

in tribute; including our beloved Editor. As I said in my introduction to the event, ‘Chas has often died on stage; and I know, because I’ve been with him. But this is the first time he’s been dead on stage.’ We buried him in the same place the following afternoon. Makes a chap think, of course it does. The BBC are running a series on Artificial Intelligence, and tonight I watched a short film about trans humanists – people who think we can live forever as cyborgs, or inside servers. People too, who say that ageing is a disease which can be cured. People who would like to live forever. And, I must say, all of them men with terrible haircuts. These people didn’t seem to have given the matter much consideration. They just want to live forever. They think that’s a good thing. But grief is the price we pay for joy, and joy is its reward. To abolish the grief that comes with the death of someone close, we need to feel joy, at a birth, at a marriage, at the renewal of life, at the promise of hope. We are made from dead stars. I hope those people are wrong, and that humans will never be stupid enough to abolish death, and with it, change. Chas, my dear old friend, had a beautiful death. I wish one for myself, come the day. Ian Marchant

On Being An Unprotected Animal on The Endangered List I am a ‘game’ species (good to shoot) and a ‘pest’ species (nibble tasty crops). 300,000-400,000 of us are killed annually, mostly on ‘shoots’. There is no closed-season so many of us are pregnant or nursing when killed. There are also approximately 100 registered packs of hounds which specifically hunt for us.

I am a Hare.

IRRATIONAL MAN (12A) Steeped in his familiar, wryly-voiced stew of existential doubts, I R R AT I O N A L M A N i s Woody Allen’s most enjoyable outing for ages. An oddly chubby Joaquin Phoenix plays troubled but famously hell-raising philosophy professor Abe Lucas arriving at an uptight campus where he first attracts the lascivious attentions of bored science teacher Rita (the woefully under appreciated Parker Posey) and later the altogether less knowing student, Jill (Emma Stone, better used here than in Allen’s MATCH POINT). But a conversation overheard during one of Abe and Jill’s gloomy exchanges in a diner triggers Abe’s damascene conversion into a panglossian spirit who also discovers his lost if legendary libido. Allen then has fun propelling the trio through various socially stereotypical set-ups with Phoenix, in particular exercising his wonderfully low-key comic muscle. All reviews by Mark Williams

45 YEARS (15) Further mining the deep seam of middle-aged comedy-drama opened up by BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, writer/ director Andrew Haigh engaged two enduring talents, Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney, as Kate and Geoff Mercer, preparing to celebrate their wedding anniversary of the titular 45 YEARS. But Geoff is unsettled by the news that the body of Katya, a long lost sweetheart, has been discovered frozen in a Swiss glacier. Initially sympathetic, Kate is herself disturbed, then angered by Geoff’s revelation that he’s Katya’s next-of-kin, and their quietly affectionate, deep-rooted relationship faces unfamiliar doubts and misgivings. The attractively washed-out Fenland setting somehow reflects the sense of empty betrayal Kate weighs against Geoff’s admirable qualities, and the sensitive, yet forceful performances of the two leads are hugely rewarding. LEGEND (18) With a much bigger budget than 1990’s THE KRAYS, Oscarwinning screenwriter Brian Helgeland (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL) also directs this rather different and fascinating take on twin brothers Ronnie and Reggie who famously ruled London’s gangland. Intriguingly, Tom Hardy (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD) plays both of them, and Helgeland concentrates on Reggie’s efforts to curb his gay brother’s psychopathic tendencies, if only to keep them less vulnerable to the long if often corrupt arm of the law. Also paying them attention is Angelo Bruno (Chazz Palminteri, THE USUAL SUSPECTS), keen to recruit them as the UK arm of the Mafia, which for their different reasons the brothers are wary of. The consequences make a finely nuanced period crime drama, with a predictable, if hefty side order of carnage. 24 Oct THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (12A) Abermule Community Centre 01686 630240 24 Oct ALICE IN WONDERLAND (PG) Belmont Hall, Wellington www.the clifton.org 24 Oct THE GLENN MIILLER STORY (U) Mollington & Backford VH 01244 851713 24 Oct ISLAND CLAWS (PG) The Old Mill Bar, Llanidloes 01686 412008 24 Oct JURASSIC WORLD (12A) Upton upon Severn Memorial Hall 01684 591044 25 Oct JURASSIC WORLD (12A) Knighton Community Centre 01547 520602 25 Oct HOME (U) Llanbister Community Hall 01597 840450 25 Oct SHAUN THE SHEEP (U) Lingen VH 01544 260865 26 Oct WILD (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 27 Oct WOMAN IN GOLD (12A) Loppington VH 01939 236240 29 Oct THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) Goodrich VH 01600 890609 29 Oct THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) Chelmarsh Parish Hall 01746 862884 29 Oct RUSH (15) Bagley Sports and Social Club 07773 983963 29 Oct WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAY (12A) Perton Civic Centre 29 Oct BRIEF ENCOUNTER (U) St Peters Church, Cowleigh 01684 562114 30 Oct SPOOKS: THE GREATER GOOD (15) Longden VH 07539 545846 30 Oct A ROYAL NIGHT OUT (12) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125.

The Goat at Llanfair Caereinion

O

24

VER the years, Mr Pernickety has made good use of the Children’s Menu Consultant, dragging him from indifferent restaurants to rank, smelly pubs, even to the occasional gastronomic acme. He has made the lad chew his way through platefuls of foul-tasting, unwholesome food, simply so that he (Mr P) can upbraid offending establishments in the complete confidence that their cuisine won’t please even a ravenous ten-year-old boy. For this, the CMC deserves the occasional treat. This wasn’t the only reason Mr P decided to book tickets on the Welshpool to Llanfair Caereinion 2’6” gauge railway, for Mr Pernickety has been an aficionado of routes plied by diminutive puffer trains since he was at least thirty. However, along with his Lovely Companion and the CMC, with a small chatty chum who suffered from excessive vocabulary disorder, he boarded the train at Welshpool hoping that the two boys would enjoy the picturesque journey as much as he would. And a lovely journey it was, with a hint of Enid Blyton about it. Mr P guessed that there must have been a good dollop of fantasy in the minds of the originators’ a little over a hundred years ago as they planned the 8 mile route between Llanfair Carerinion (1,800 souls) to the minor market town of Welshpool. The line was conceived to deliver agricultural produce to the mainline Cambrian Railways station, and the ladies of Llanfair, heavy with their husbands’ wool wealth and their own excessive appetites, to visit the flesh-pots, gown-shops and fancy goods emporia of the larger town. However, even the most turnip-headed rustic entrepreneur should have seen that there was never going to be enough traffic to break even, and it wasn’t long before the small railway was bought by Cambrian Railways, and subsequently the GWR, who compounded their illjudged purchase by opening up an alternative omnibus service, swiftly killing the passenger business stone dead, until, eventually, the line was closed in 1956. However, Mr P is not writing a feature in Trainspotter’s Monthly, so he will skip all the fine points of the voyage, and fast forward to the throbbing railway terminus at Llanfair Caereinion, from where, taking a wooden footbridge across the strangely tangerine-coloured River Banwy, Mr P and his party plodded up a path to a town-centre which scarcely merits such a description, offering only a few knackered shops flogging the Sun newspaper, chewing gum, tins of peach slices and liquorice shoelaces, sitting among a surprising number of churches of various Christian hues. Perhaps the tradition of Welsh temperance still outstrips the desire for drink, as there appear to be fewer pubs than churches. Mr P and his team were heading for one of these rare hostelries – The Goat

Hotel, a four bay Georgian building in white painted brick. The Goat’s potentially handsome exterior is seriously marred by a large ugly air conditioning fan plonked on the flat roof of its period portico. Inside, it must be said, the Goat is no beauty – white roughcast Iberian-style walls between black wooden stanchions, hideous wall-lights, a hotchpotch of ‘pub’ furniture and faux-Indian stuff with metal straps on it. On the other hand, the place doesn’t suffer from the pernicious affliction of over-restoration that has ruined so many fine old buildings in the Marches. There is an attractive ancient fireplace in the main, sofa-cluttered bar. There are also some enjoyable watercolours hanging alongside a few others not so good. Above all, it was unpretentious, even authentic, in a perverse sort of way, delivering a pleasing if unsophisticated ambience. In the back bar is a serviceable pool table, which kept the CMC and the chatty chum quiet while they decided what to eat. Mr P’s team sat at one of the odd assortment of tables on pub-style chairs, feeling that the menu reflected the unpretentiousness of the surroundings. When the food arrived, they were delighted to be proved right. No one had a starter, although Mr P guessed that the Home-Made Cawl would have been worth trying. The LC tucked in happily to a Chicken Breast with Leeks in a Creamy Dijon Mustard Sauce (£7.75). The CMC had Macaroni Cheese Topped with Snowdonia Red Devil & Garlic Bread (£6.00), which he enjoyed while bemoaning the absence of a crusty top. He followed this with a lip-licking Raspberry Sorbet. The Chatty Chum had a Mediterranean Risotto Topped with Parmesan & Served with a Side Salad (£6.75), which he loved, although not as much as his Chocolate Torte, which he described as ‘absolutely spiffing’, although he had a few stern words to say about the state of the lavatory. ‘The seat doesn’t work,

there isn’t a lock and the loo-roll holder fell off.’ Mr P ate a Steak & Ale Pie (£7.50) – a satisfying, real pie with sides and a nice firm bottom, well filled and served with good new potatoes and not so new peas. When asked, the friendly woman who served lunch told Mr P that everything they had eaten was made on the premises, except the meat pie, which was bought in locally – refreshing and reassuring honesty, which only improved Mr P’s enjoyment of his lunch in this genuine and likeable small hotel. www.misterpernickety.com

GLASBURY ARTS Saturday, October 10, 2015; 8pm Glasbury Village Hall

Isla St Clair and Patrick King in ‘Eyes Front’ This year marks the 75th anniversary of the ’Battle of Britain’ and 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. grass roots October Musings King Ludwig II

7. The fracking situation is increasing and undemocratic and now in the Herefordshire/Monmouthshire area 8. And the latest this week is that the Solar PV feed in tariffs will be suddenly reduced (again) by 85% at the end of December, and if this happens to cause a sudden rush to install (as it has already) then they have introduced the caveat that the FITS will suddenly be ended completely in January. No exemption for any community energy projects. When challenged with the 20,000 job losses likely, Amber Rudd simply said ‘ Employment levels were not in their evaluations’ All the above was actually described as ‘Totally Bonkers’ by other members of parliament.

I

N the past, wealthy Romans used powdered mouse brains for toothpaste. During the 19th Century, King Ludwig II of Bavaria spent all of his personal funds on the construction of fairy tale castles. Sultan Ibrahim l of the Ottomans tried to force feed his fish with money. And Ivan IV, Tsar of Russia spent his spare time torturing small animals. You would think that people in positions of power would know better. And then this letter arrived … Hi All, I’ve been amazed at crazy behaviour of this present Government. In the last few weeks the following has been announced: 1. The Zero Carbon Homes standard set out in 2006 for all new houses to be net zero carbon by 2016 has been scrapped. So we can still build the leaky energy inefficient new houses like we have been building. The homeowner’s costs will be higher as well as the GreenHouse Gas (GHG) costs. 2. The climate change levy exemption for renewable energy has been scrapped from 1st Aug 2015 - this means that the renewable energy industry now has to pay for the carbon produced by the rest of the fossil fuel industry. About £1billion per year by 2020. Significant financially and ethically. 3. New Onshore Wind has been effectively stalled due to the subsidies to encourage it being removed. The Gov. admits that this will certainly reduce the volume of our cheapest large-scale renewable energy (Onshore Wind) and so we will not meet the 2025 targets. The UK still pays £28 Billion per year in Fossil Fuel subsidies (although it was promised to phase this out from 2010) 4. The Department for Energy and Climate change (DECC) has seen its budget cut by £70M, with staffing levels likely to be cut by 90%. Since the majority of its budget is used for trying to clear up the Sellafield nuclear mess there will not be much left for anything related to climate change. 5. Low Emission vehicles will now be charged the same road tax as standard cars. Good for Chelsea tractors.

6. The long awaited Green Deal for households to reduce their fossil fuel energy consumption has been cancelled.

Fortunately I’ve just returned charged up with optimism following a workshop at the Centre of Alternative Technology (CAT) on the Zero Carbon Britain model and how this links to over 120 other countries similar work. Information in this letter comes from their Autumn 2015 issue of their magazine, Clean Slate. Best Wishes Gordon Thanks Gordon, great letter. Rachel Francis, www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
