What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

1¼ in to 1mile - 2cm to 1km T

HE family were all working at the Secret Garden Party in Cambridgshire. I was at a loose end, but itching to take advantage of the ridiculous summer weather with a proper bike ride. Put two and two together and decided to try and find ‘the pretty way’ from Presteigne to Huntingdon. 200 miles of country lanes right through the heart of the beast - Middle England. First job, down to town and try and buy up all the second-hand purple ordanance survey maps from 149 (Presteigne & Hay-on-Wye) to 155 (Cambridge) with 137 (Ludlow & Wenlock Edge) thrown in for good measure. Did surprisingly well on my first foray and by the time I’d added Tour 23 (Herefordshire & Worcestershire) from the Oxfam shop in Hereford, I was feeling pretty ‘mapped up’, even though some of the collection were looking a tiny bit old and dog-eared. Three batteries, for the Bacchetta semi-recumbent that hasn’t really been anywhere since John O’Groats to Lands End CHECK. Battery charger for the bike - CHECK. Battery charger for the camera - CHECK. Battery charger for the re-chargable front light - CHECK. Battery charger for the phone - CHECK. For god’s sake that’s 45 kilos of battery chargers! Have to economise on clothes. One t-shirt, two pairs of underpants, a spare shirt and trousers for best, that’ll have to do. Slightly waterproof jacket, one pair of suedes. Right let’s be off! DAY 1 As always with these trips it feels a bit funny for the first half hour. The bike’s really heavy and unstable with all the stuff I’m carrying. Wonder if it’s going to dump me in the canal in Leamington Spa? Wish I’d asked someone to come with me. But then after about an hour I settle down and start enjoying myself. Before I get to Tenbury, I’m in unchartered waters with a little back cut parallel to the main road to Tenbury that runs through Upton Court and Berrington and then after Tenbury I’m in foreign territory. End up at some really good friends place on the River at Grimley. The pub at Grimley is a monster. I really shouldn’t mention it, but it seems to be an open secret. Hidden down a single track lane with no signposts, loads of people sunning themselves on the lawns by the river while peacocks strut around. Good food, good beer, good company. The only drawback is that it regularly floods, situated as it is on the banks of the Severn, just before the river hits Worcester’s flood defences. But that doesn’t daunt the landlord of ‘Camp House’ who just gets out his boat and rows the customers to and from dry land! DAY 2 Head into Worcester, I think I sort of know the layout of the city, so round the big roundabout and head for the railway station. Then take one of the B roads heading east and in a few minutes I should be in open country. Hey, hang on, we’re in the middle of a bloody housing estate with no road signs except, hospital, supermarket, industrial estate. I stop on a roundabout and wave my map at a passing 18 year old. He gazes myopically at it like he’s never seen a map or at least not one that’s not on a phone. “No idea mate, I don’t think it’s on this map”. Of course its on the bloody map, it’s an ordanance survey map, EVERYTHINGS on it except secret American air bases. Eventually I locate a row of Small Ads 4 brand new small shops next to a Tesco Express that include an Estate Agent. At least they might know where we are. I wave my map again at a greased up 30 year old in a charcoal Architecture 6 suit. He counters, by firing up Google maps and patiently explaining to me that since my Art 8 infallible guide was printed, they’ve added on another big lump to the East of the city and Art workshops 12 alas, Woodgreen, Tolladine Farm and Trotshill are no longer with us. He recommends I go left, right, right down to the roundabout and exit town on the A4538. Damn you Courtyard Cinema 18 Antiques and your £1.35 map! Eventually I find my little road and strike off across country Dance 22 towards Alcester. My plan is to pick up the Grand Union Canal in Warwick and head along Food 24 it through Leamington Spa to a B&B I’m supposed to be booked in at. But nothing goes to plan. The towpath on the Grand Union is narrow, bumpy, and surprisingly, for a canal, full Music 26 of people. The B&B I’m booked in at has no knowledge of my existence, but eventually tells Music workshops 36 me I should be at Mill Farm, not Mill Cottage. Mill Farm turns out to be a rather unattractive Venues 39 chicken farm behind electric gates and to cap it all, my pork tenderloin at the local gastro pup is slightly overcooked. “God it’s a hard life!” I mutter as I slurp down my third Rioja. Band directory 40 DAY 3 Theatre 42 Things improve dramatically on Day 3. I don’t get lost. I give up on the Grand Union and Word 46 find some great little roads and what looked rather boring on the map is a rather nice bit of countryside. I am somewhat taken aback in Great Brington to encounter lots of Japanese Grass roots 50 people and their cameras, but it turns out I’ve rolled up at Lady Di’s old haunt, Althorp Park. Comp therapies 52 The other thing that’s caught my attention as I roll across the Midlands is the lost village syndrome. Oh yes, they look smart enough, but they all seem to lack basic amenities, no We take no small shops - so everyone has to drive. The only surviving pubs are Farrow and Ball painted responsibility for gastro joints and there just aren’t that many people. Outside the villages, it’s all curved the veracity of the brick entrances, gravel drives, electric gates and masses and masses of shiny BMW 4 x information herein 4s. It’s a bit like an ‘After the Holocaust’ movie. Pete Mustill DAY 4 Mayfield, Stapleton, Another nice days cycling, despite having to dip into Wellingborough to find my final map, Nr Presteigne, Powys 153 (Bedford & Huntingdon). I especially enjoyed cycling along the big, curved dam on LD8 2LW the east side of Grafham Water and then suddenly at about 4pm I’m at The Secret Garden. Tel: 01544 260051 Email: info@broadsheep.com After four days of trickling along deserted B roads with only myself for company, I’m Website: www.broadsheep.com surrounded by 25,000 face painted drunks and 10 stages all pumping out different bass lines. Help! Get me out the hell out of here.

Garden City Revival G

ARDEN cities were the subject of this year’s Wolfson Economics Prize, promoted by Simon Wolfson (aka Lord Wolfson of Apsley Guise and Chief Executive of Next plc for over a decade), scion of the retail and property dynasty. It was not so much an architectural competition – since no site was identified for the winning scheme to be built on – as an attempt to revive and adapt for the 21st century, the concept first pioneered by Ebenezer Howard more than a century ago. Here it was words and not sun-drenched, Martini umbrella-lined boulevards which the competition’s five judges were looking for. Disarmingly simple, the Wolfson prize’s 15-word challenge asked: ‘How would you deliver a new garden city which is visionary, economically-viable and popular?’ Answers not on a postcard please, but as a 10,000-word thesis! The first stage attracted 279 entries, with five finalists eventually being short-listed to compete for the £1/4-million first prize. The finalists were certainly a disparate bunch; hardly the sort of eco-thinkers you’d find gracing the top table of a dinner at the Royal Institute of British Architects. There was Cardiff-based architect-planners Barton Willmore, who are currently masterplanning Ebbsfleet Valley in Kent for the Thames Gateway Region; surveyor Chris Blundell, a director of house builders Golding Homes; the housing and homeless charity Shelter, which needs no introduction; ecoplanners Urbed, who are working on the Icknield Port Loop urban village, a high-density development of 10,000 canal-side homes in Birmingham; and the urban design practice created by Dr Wei Yang, which joined forces with structural engineers Buro Happold second in world structural engineering rankings only to the legendary Ove Arup practice. The winner will be announced on the competition organiser’s website later this month (www.policyexchange.org.uk/wolfsonprize).

6

Given formal government blessing by the Chancellor in this year’s Budget, Ebbsfleet is far and away the largest of the finalists’ works-in-progress, though it hardly bears comparison with the first progeny of the

movement created out of Howard’s garden cities ideals – Letchworth – thirteen years after the publication of his ‘Garden Cities of Tomorrow.’ Bigged-up as ‘sustainable’ (these days even a packet of crisps is regarded as sustainable) and ‘mixed-use’ (ie there will be loads of multi-national shops, fastfood outlets and plush offices, as well as the houses), Ebbsfleet has already attracted controversy because of its proximity to the high-speed rail link into London, encouraging the suspicion that it will become an enclave for rich business commuters. Developer Land Securities remains tight-lipped about what percentage of affordable homes will be stirred into Ebbsfleet Valley’s social melting pot. Interestingly, Howard’s seminal work suggested that a garden city’s model population of 32,000 should occupy (working and living) 2,400 hectares, though Letchworth only ever grew to around 1,500 hectares. Ebbsfleet will cover around 160 hectares (much of it brown field), with upwards of 10,000 homes. Garden city exemplars in The Marches are as rare as the lynx. Closest is probably Hereford Garden Suburb. In 1908, under the inspired direction of Councillor Edmund Bulmer, 85 cottages (housing around 400 tenants, at a generous density of 12 to the acre) were built at Barr’s Court Road. For more than a decade, Herefordshire Council has been promising to build a state-of-the-art urban village of 6000 eco-homes (one third would be ‘affordable’), on the squalid brown field acres lying to the north of the brash new £90M Old Market retail development (see Broad Sheep May 2014; p6). Promises are one thing; bricks and mortar are quite another. Birminghambased Sanctuary Housing continues to twiddle its thumbs, though earlier this year did start work on a ground-breaking block of 15 apartments. So, only 5985 eco-homes to go! Nick Jones

Letters Dear Pete and your fine team, With apologies for my long absence, I enclose my latest unbiased review of eateries in the area. I’m afraid my identity must remain unknown for obvious reasons, but I assure your readers of my best intentions to serve and inform at all times. My compliments and admiration, as ever, for your most excellent organ. Mr D.

Ron’s Cabin

In the spring of this year, Mr D followed a tip-off from a well-trusted friend and stopped at a roadside café popular with lorry drivers on the main thoroughfare out of the Marches epicurean gem, Ludlow. He was, admittedly, a little trepidatious due to the name of the eatery, Ron’s Cabin, but Mr D wanted to see for himself if rumours of an exciting, contemporary shift were true. Ron’s lunchtime menu has acquired an impressive reputation among discerning cleintele not necessarily at the wheel of a lorry. After ordering what he thought was a safe bacon and egg bap, Mr D remembered the house speciality, black pudding, and asked if that could be added without too much difficulty. During the meanwhilst, a gentleman customer who looked like he was no stranger to Ron’s cuisine stood at the counter, and glaced between Mr D and a well-known red-topped newspaper as he waited for his luncheon. Mr D cheerily wished the gentleman good day and asked if he had visited before. The gentleman asked Mr D if he wanted his head kicked in. Mr D said that he didn’t and, much to his own surprise, picked up a newspaper of his own in an attempt to look casual. Mr D is happy to say that the FB did not take the matter further. The piping-hot ensemble arrived very shortly, and any worries Mr D may have had evaporated as quickly as hot coffee spilt on a formica work-surface. While the bacon was a little rare, and the egg could only be pronounced a tasteless flubber, the black pudding was a triumph of crispy self-assurance. Yet the experience had a sentimental dimension also and Mr D was reminded of an episode many summers ago when a young vicar arrived at his aunt’s house for tea and, while taking off his bicycle clips and hanging them on the handlebars of the Hercules, well-behaved children noticed an eagle tattoo peeping above his dog-collar. Seldom has Mr D been so animated about a meal served in aluminium foil for an incredible three pounds. It is Mr D’s intention to revisit Ron’s Cabin before too long, lest the black pudding bids its farewell, but he will certainly ask his LSW to collect the meal while Mr D waits in the carriage. Mr D

THE OLDER THE BETTER

Although Hollywood won’t admit it, the relatively few films about and aimed at older folk regularly outperform the far more numerous ones directed at younger audiences. It began with BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (naturally a sequel is on its way) but LE WEEKEND, LATE QUARTET and more cynically obvious fare like SONG FOR MARION and QUARTET have continued the trend. And this month three further contenders vie for the more mature attention spans. In CYCLING WITH MOLIÈRE, grumpy Serge Tanneur (co-writer Fabrice Luchini, POTICHE) is a once-lauded actor retired from this “dirty business with vulgar people who lie and betray” to a remote French island. Enter dashing t.v. soap star, Gauthier Valence (THE MATRIX), exhorting Serge to join him in Molière’s appropriately titled masterwork, The Misanthrope. Director Philippe Le Guay’s witty study of these two grudgingly friendly thesps sparring over both Molière’s script and an angry local divorcee (Maya Sansa) has wryly hilarious echoes of Truffaut’s JULES ET JIM – with the added irony that Luchini actually played Molière’s rich benefactor in the 2007 film bearing his name.

Cycling with Moliere

THE CONGRESS, Ari Folman’s sequel to WALTZ WITH BASHIR is an even more imaginative melding of live and animated action with Robin Wright boldly playing her aging self shunned by youth-fixated Hollywood. But her prickly agent (Harvey Keitel) persuades her to undergo a digital scan that will preserve her image forever and which devious Miramount studio boss (Danny Huston) can deploy at will. When her new persona becomes wildly successful she eventually meets the animator – naturally also a digitised being – responsible for her enduring popularity, voiced by MAD MEN’s John Hamm. The outcome is both a sobering comment on fame’s transience and a dazzlingly surreal visual feast. The Congress

And taking the aging process (and film titling) to its limits, director/writer Felix Herngren’s second feature, THE 100-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT OF A WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED advances a vogue for dark Scandi-comedy typified by 2011’s HEADHUNTERS. Opening as described on the tin, it quickly becomes a rapid-fire succession of chance encounters interlaced with bizarre, ZELIG-like flashbacks. Karlsson, the titular centenarian, played with subtle relish by the distinguished Robert Gustafsson, bumbles his way from a nursing home into a seedy criminal netherworld, with a deliciously typecast Alan Ford (LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) as an enraged villain determined to recover the loot Karlsson has inadvertently appropriated. However, aided by social misfits, inept officials and a morally resolute elephant, our hero manages to stay a few steps ahead of brutal reprisal. Whilst avoiding comedy clichés, Herngren’s film is consistently amusing with an underlying tension and affection for its characters us oldsters will particularly appreciate. Mark Williams

grass roots Bikes on Trains E

VERY now and then, a group of us meet to go cycling after work. We usually end up at a pub for a meal before cycling home later in the evening.

It would be great to be able to hop, with bikes, on a local train and travel up the line to say Builth Wells. From Builth you can cycle along the Welsh National Cycle Route - the Lon Las Cymru – as far as Rhayader in just an hour or two, and from there, take the cycle path to the Elan Valley Dams. From this idea it’s only a small leap to people inventing new train/bike commutes to work as well. But the options for groups and even individual commuters wanting to take (non folding) bikes on trains are very limited. Train Operating Companies across the UK are usually only able to take a couple of bikes ‘subject to space being available,’ although reservation systems are improving and secure bike storage is also an option at larger stations. This being said, in almost every “you can’t do that” situation exceptions do exist. Here are some early pioneers of the bikes-on-trains revolution, which must surely come... Stuttgart, Germany The Stuttgart Rack Railway is known locally as Die Zacke and first opened in 1884. It connects the urban districts of Marienplatz and Degerloch in Stuttgart, and over its 2.2 km route, climbs a height of 205 m with a fantastic view of the city centre. Die Zacke is integrated with the metropolitan railway network of the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen and is also a popular tourist attraction. In 1982 the railway network trialed a demonstration wagon designed specially to transport bicycles. This was so successful that it led to the permanent inclusion of this fantastic platform. Wonderful Copenhagen In 2010, Danish State Railways [DSB] first announced their intention to allow all bicycles to travel free on the red S-trains that serve Greater Copenhagen and suburbs. DSB have set a trend, making everyday journeys easier for Copenhageners and this has encouraged many more people to use their bicycles.

Massachusetts, US If you happen to be in Massachusetts, bikes are in. Negotiations began way back in 1977 between the cycle to work organisation Massbike and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The very first step was a one off trial allowing bikes on two trains a day on weekends to and from Boston to Cape Ann. Progress getting a bikes on trains agreement was slow, but worth it, and nowadays Massbike works with the MBTA on the Bikes and Transit Committee that meets 4-6 times a year. Bicycles are allowed on the subway and Commuter Rail, although not at peak times, and there are also timetabled bike trains. Closer to Home? The Heart of Wales Line runs 120 miles between Swansea and Shrewsbury. Maybe this is the sort of line that might be better able to adapt to needs of cyclists etc than trains on the larger commercial routes? A community partnership of local councils, businesses, passenger groups and the rail industry, (called the Heart of Wales Line Forum) now have the support of Welsh Government for a 3-year development plan, starting with an extra train in May 2015. The next three years are a unique chance for communities to get involved in this process. To find out more about the Heart of Wales Line Forum follow @heartofwales1 on Twitter, Heart of Wales Line on Facebook or visit the Heart of Wales Line online at www.heart-of-wales.co.uk Rachel Francis
