ATELY people have been writing letters to Broad Sheep and I have been pretty useless at either printing them or replying to them. We did have a letters page but it seems to have got lost, so I’ll try and make up for it now. Here is letter number 1 from Julia Parker. Re: Ticking the Boxes. I have just been in hospital too, with a broken femur and a broken hip and I noticed the same preoccupation with ticks and boxes. After a few days of answering the same questions as you, I asked a nurse and she told me it was a new directive following the Mid-Staffs enquiry. At the end of 12 days I was even answering questions for other patients too - those too ill or confused to answer for themselves. A friend of mine (a very capable farm manager who had driven his ride-on mower off the edge of a ha-ha) was actually organising the whole ward by the end of his stay. Thought you’d like to know all this and I hope you are getting better. Maybe we could write a sit-com set in an Orthopaedic ward. Best wishes, Julia Parker Small Ads 4 And another very flattering one from Simon Arbuthnott. Hugh’s bit 6 Dear Editor (or Pete, if I may?) Another corking edition of a remarkable publication. For fourteen years, I had the dubious pleasure of doing the Shobdon Village News (actually I Art 8 enjoyed it!), which appeared every four months. It was hugely hard work, but was a very Art workshops 14 minor undertaking compared to Broad Sheep. The Editorial, as they invariably are, was original and delightfully sardonic, and I have spent enough time in Hereford Hospital to Cinema 20 endorse all you have to say. We may not totally agree about Trident, but it would certainly Dance 24 be better spent on the NHS than what the Green Party Candidate on Wednesday here was Food 26 advocating, which was ‘World Peace’, though how £150 billion was going to do this was never properly explained. With best wishes, Simon Arbuthnott Music 28 A very grumpy one about my dog editorial from Janet Phillips Music workshops 41 Dear Pete. I was having a bit of lunch while out yesterday and Venues 43 picked up the July 2015 copy of ‘Broad Sheep’. I read through ‘Dogday Afternoon’ with growing dismay. Dog rescue organiBand directory 44 sations are mown under with growing numbers of neglected, Theatre 46 dumped, and abused dogs. Your article ‘Dogday Afternoon’ did Word 50 nothing to foster positive attitudes in people that dogs are not just disposable items. The 10 year old Dalmatian belonging Grass roots 54 to the brother’s mate is a case in point - because of his new Comp therapies 56 job in Qatar, he must now ‘get rid’ of the unfortunate dog. The The new Workhouse puppy wording gives the impression that a dog is a disposable item and We take no responsibility for eating Pete’s Editorial should have said that the brother’s mate ‘needed to find a new the veracity of the information and loving home’ for the dog, thereby showing some sense of responsibility and care as a herein dog owner. Your article did nothing for the welfare of dogs. Yours sincerely, Janet Phillips Pete Mustill And David Williams giving Mr Pernickety a hard time (he deserves it) Mayfield, Stapleton, Dear Mr Pernickety. I cannot let you get away with your comments on Hereford’s new Nr Presteigne, Powys development in the August edition of Broad Sheep unchallenged, so here are a few points. LD8 2LW Before the advent of the new eateries where did you eat in the city in the evening? Before the Tel: 01544 260051 Email: info@broadsheep.com advent of The Odeon the city had one rather run-down commercial cinema, never showing Website: www.broadsheep.com decent films, and we were saved in that regard only by the blessing of The Courtyard. The new development has been instrumental in ridding us of the awful dividing line of the duel carriageway with it’s concrete boxes of municipal flowers. Now we see a flow of people moving easily between the old centre and the new development. Hereford just cannot sit back and not develop. Best regards, David Williams Alan who quite rightly thinks I am the man to sort out Hereford’s coffee crisis. Pete I am new to the area (5 years!). I find the Broad Sheep a great read! My particular concern is the lack of good cappuccinos in the Marches especially with cinnamon. - except the Workhouse Gallery its almost a complete desert. There are one or two hot-spots especially where the independent compete with the chains! I have heard all the excuses.... not the right milk, the girl that makes them is not in today, the weather is too warm/cold...not enough customers complain and the dreaded flat white is spreading like a disease! If I can produce a reasonable cappuccino at home with a hand milk frother what’s the problem! I seek help from the transformer! Alan of Llan-y-nis And finally a slightly delusional Conservative Councillor who for some reason thinks Broad Sheep is the right place to address her constituents. I can only assume she has never read it. Good morning. I am the newly elected County Councillor for Stapleton and would like to put an article in your magazine for the people of Mortimer Ward, which includes Stapleton. Would this be appropriate? Cllr Carole Gandy I think what I need to do is write one of those standard replies that I can print off and sign that will satisfy all the above people and their opinions. So here goes. Dear Sir/Madam. We were delighted to receive your recent communication. We are always pleased to hear from our readers especially ones who feel as passionate about things as you obviously do. That being said you can’t please all the people all the time, but you can please some of the people some of the time. Sometimes, when I’m walking my rescue dog to the local coffee bar and thinking about David Cameron’s exciting new proposals for the NHS, it occurs to me that life is very like Hereford’s Town Plan. Some things are on one side of the road and some other things are on the other. I like to think of Broad Sheep as a very pissed off guy in his Audi waiting for the traffic lights to change at the Widemarsh Street junction on a busy Friday evening. Although we occupy the centre ground, alas, we are going nowhere. Yours faithfully

The Edgeworth Farmily Trees: A Fantasy B

ACK in the 18th C. my ancestor John Edgeworth inherited an estate in Radnorshire and so became the local MP. When in 1750 a bill to correct Britain’s calendar was introduced in the House of Commons, he was an ardent supporter. After much wrangling Parliament agreed that the Julian calendar then in use was “attended with divers inconveniences”, being out of kilter with Scotland - and Europe, “and thereby frequent mistakes are occasioned, and disputes arise therefrom.” Our method of computing leap-years had put Britain 11 days out of synch with both the European calendar and the real solar year and was slipping further behind so that crossing the channel not only meant turning your watch forwards by an hour, but adding 11 days to the date. Despite patriotic complaints we fell in step with the insufferable foreigners and calculated the year by the more accurate Gregorian method. At midnight on 2nd September 1752 Britain jumped to midnight + 1 second on the 14th. Rioters demanded the return of their lost days. People went without their birthdays. Christmas came early. Edgeworth was a fervent Enlightenment man, and decided to commemorate this triumph of reason with an epic calendrical work of his own. In 1753 he planted 2 oak trees, 20 feet apart, at the far end of his longest meadow. Every year he planted another pair, 20 ft on from the last pair so that by the end of his life – some 55 years, 4 wives and 16 children later - there was an avenue of 110 trees in a rising curve, aged from 1 to 55 years old, the best of which were over 60 ft tall when he died. In his will he commanded that the line should be continued every year, come lightning bolts, storm, drought or flood, for the obvious reason of completing his purpose - to be able to see at once, in one sweep of the eye, all the life-stages of the species, but also because the avenue, his long experiment, was meant to preserve the marks of the accidents of climate, disease and other natural variations, in the living record of the trees. He took the long view down his long avenue. His descendants were legally compelled to continue the plantings, and the estate descended father to son for 6 generations, until it was sold in 1922. Edgeworth’s Avenue had become a magnificent sight: more than a thousand

6

yards long. One could walk the line from the maturing trees of the 18th C – now coming up to their full glory – past the already substantial trees of the 19th and then note the rapid descent in height and girth around the turn of that century until one reached the youngest trees planted after WW1, only a few feet high. The tenant of the largest farm bought the meadow. The wealth of many land-owning dynasties had ebbed away with the passing of the Victorian era; the final nail in the Edgeworths’ coffin was the loss of their only son, their only hope, in the 1st World War. Throughout the rest of the 20th C. the planting of a pair of trees by someone from the Edgeworth diaspora became a ceremony incorporated in the annual Village show, known as the Wakes, so that the tradition was further protected from failure or neglect, although by now it was not likely to die out; it represented too many things to the villagers, and had taken root as firmly in their hearts as it had in the meadows by the Teme. The avenue was the symbol of their community and their histories were preserved in it. “This tree was planted in the year my first grandchild was born” – “this tree marks the year when the church organ caught fire”, “This tree was struck in the Great Storm”. People could now go for time-walks down the line carrying a guide book written by a local historian. And so Edgeworth’s avenue began to attract tourists, and with it their cash; the pub became a Michelin star restaurant; a farmer diversified into holiday chalets and villagers made money from seasonal B’n’Bs. The Wakes became a Wassailing event which celebrated the trees in music and cider. The villagers reacted with occasional disdain to the consequent tree-huggers and druidical oddballs but took their money anyway. In the 21st C. the avenue became a listed feature. It was subject to inspection by all four English and Welsh Heritage and Nature authorities since the straight line of the trees twice transected the meandering national border. The first Ordinance Survey had unwisely set the boundary along the line of the river c. 1820, but the Teme had long ago taken a mind to wander off in other directions, and in the fullness of time back again, and with it the notional boundary, until the local government act of 1972 fixed it as an arbitrary line which disdained mere

geography. Then the valley was declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and later the river became a Sacred Site of Scientific Interest. A visitor centre was successfully resisted, likewise the vandalisation of the avenue with explanatory notices. Occasionally the farmer would let a bull into the field, “just to keep things in perspective he said as he peered down the avenue at his finely framed Herefordshire cattle. There was a point in the mid 22nd C. when the visitor could see the living profile of the species in almost all its possible phases from fragile infant sapling to spreading grand-father, as well as some ruins prematurely broken by disease, dropped branches, lightning or subterranean disadvantages. However none had yet attained the grandeur of a 5 or 600 year tree nor was likely to for the climate had begun to change. 50 years later the new saplings could no longer be persuaded to take; the river dried up except for two months in the rainy season. The older trees that survived with their taproots down in the aquifers suffered from the heat and the dust which clogged their leaves, although many still stood in magnificent stag-headed silhouette. Through the 22nd Century the meadow became a savannah, then deteriorated to sand in the 23rd. The bleached bones of the oaks still stand in gap-toothed pairs in some places, a memorial to the events of history as recorded in the unique profiles and tree-rings of the trees, exactly as intended by John Edgeworth, but it was not a memorial of the kind he would have wished for or could have imagined, and was now seen only by the few travellers who pass through this uninhabited landscape. So his long experiment drew towards its close. Thanks to Andrew Darke, sculptor, for contributing thoughts. (c) Hugh Colvin 2012-15

cinema THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMPSON (15)

The titular Thompson is an abrasive, feckless Glaswegian barber leading a life of quiet desperation until his modest career suddenly hits the buffers, inadvertently propelling him into the world of serial killers. Pursued by a cockney cop-out-of-water (Ray Winstone), his irascible chief superintendent (Tom Courtney) and offered distinctly cold comfort by his hard-living mother (Emma Thompson), as the body count bizarrely mounts, Barney grapples with his fate as best he can, i.e. badly. Referencing that other darkly comic Scottish thriller, SHALLOW GRAVE and his own, memorable turn in TRAINSPOTTING, Carlyle’s directorial debut is a total joy, its four leads on riotously brittle form, especially Thompson whose 70 year-old foul-mouthed tart-without-a-heart is worlds away from the posho stereotypes we tend to expect. MARSHLAND (15) Co-writer/director Alberto Rodriguez’ much garlanded UNIT 7 was a noirish police thriller set in his Seville hometown and with MARSHLAND he’s an hour’s drive south in the Guadalquivir wetlands where a principled rookie cop (Raúl Arévalo) and his older, tougher-minded partner (Javier Gutiérrez) arrive to investigate the disappearance of two young sisters. Set in 1980 as Spain moved nervously from dictatorship to democracy, and in a community riven with suspicion, misogyny and a nascent whiff of sexual abuse, their differing methodologies – moral and otherwise – soon engender additional tension between them. Rodrigues’ regular cameraman, Alex Catalán, layers the tense narrative with a palette of agile, impressionist colours and imaginative angles which add considerably to the edginess of this masterful drama. 12 Sept TORTOISE IN LOVE (12A) Bayston Hill Memorial Hall 01743 873940 14 Sept KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (15) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 16 Sept TIN (12A) Escleyside Hall 01981 510696 16 Sept TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (12A) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 16 Sept FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (12A) Myddle VH 01939 290872 17 Sept THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (12A) Claverley VH 01746 710528 17 Sept THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) Kinnerley Parish Hall 01691 682282 17 Sept FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (12A) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 18 Sept KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (15) Bosbury Parish Hall 01531 640415 18 Sept SUITE FRANCAIS (15) Lingen VH 01544 260865 18 Sept THE IMITATION GAME (12A) Stoke Prior VH 01568 760423 18 Sept THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY (PG) Little Dewchurch VH 01432 840333 18 Sept DARK HORSE: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY OF DREAM ALLIANCE (PG) Upton Magna Memorial Hall 01743 709482 18 Sept THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (12A) Shifnal VH 01952 462787 18 Sept WILD (15) All Stretton VH 01694 723378 19 Sept THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (PG) Trefonen VH 01691 657011

PAPER TOWNS (12) British ‘It’ Girl/fashion model/eyebrow icon Cara Delevingne can now officially add ‘movie star’ to her credits, as she follows up Michael Winterbottom’s FACE OF AN ANGEL, with her second ‘proper’ big film role. A cleverly constructed coming-of-age story, it’s narrated by Quentin ‘Q’ Jacobson, a well-behaved teenager whose motto is ‘I like boring’. However, Q’s life is turned upside down by the antics of high-spirited Margo (Delevingne), the enigmatic girl-next-door who spirits him away on an all-night adventure – then disappears. Only the cryptic clues left behind for Quentin to decipher may hold the key to her mystery. A remarkable mix of hilarious and moving from another bestselling ‘young adult’ novel by John Green (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS). 28 & 30 Sept THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The Oak, Wigmore

and in with the new

F

ROM the way Mr Pernickety consistently rails about the over-restoration of formerly charming old pubs, and the conversion of their interiors into airport Departure Lounges, his regular readers might conclude that he is a stuffed shirt who dislikes anything ‘modern’. In fact, although Mr P deplores much modern architecture – the Pompidou Centre in Paris, for example, the Shard in London, Selfridges’ Silver Slug in Birmingham, the Library and Tesco in Ludlow, the Tax Office in Hereford – he appreciates the quiet irony of the Paddy’s Wigwam in Liverpool, the warm rotundity of the Eden Project Geodomes, even Boris’s Glass Bubble by the Thames. But what is most distressingly lost in the ‘modernising’ of older buildings is the patina which was often one of their most charming qualities. In his many reviews of eating places in the Marches, Mr P has found himself increasingly having to make this criticism, and so it was, it seemed, with this month’s subject, The Oak, in Wigmore. Out with the old

First, although, in defence of those responsible, the former pub, The Olde Oak, from which The Oak has morphed, was, despite its age, no beauty – rough-rendered and grubby – and its interior, so far as Mr P recalls before it closed three years ago, was more heavily coated with grime than with charming patina, the refurbished version – more or less unrecognisable – has been done up to and slightly beyond its eyeballs, which inevitably tainted Mr P’s first impressions. Very little, if anything, of the old place appears to remain, inside or out. Mr P and his Lovely Companion (freshly and excitingly bronzée from the Sardinian sun) couldn’t immediately see from the new stone floors, the plethora of naked beams and rafters, and assortment of retro knickknackery just what ‘look’ the owners were aiming for. Nevertheless, they kept their critical faculties on hold, and celebrated the warm evening by opting to drink Campari and soda outside. After a quick look at the small enclosed terrace at the back of the pub, and rejecting it on account of lack of panorama and a noisy kitchen extractor fan, they made their way back through the pub and the front bar – furnished with squashy sofas and low tables – to sit on a small, flag-stoned terrace at the front, where they sat on faux wicker garden seats in muted taupe,

26

set beside green-grey metal planters which failed to deliver the sense of sophistication which Mr P imagines the owners were hoping for. From here Mr P and the LC could gaze over a shallow stone wall at the tractors roaring 0ver the crossroads which is Wigmore’s Piccadilly. Their Camparis arrived well served, with a menu which promised, at least, that the skillet in the kitchen was being wielded by an imaginative chef. While drinking a glass of indifferent Pinot Grigio they made their choices and were shown through to a stylish table of recycled planks and mid-century chairs, situated in the middle of the dining-room. While Mr P faced a white wall adorned only with a giant knife and fork beneath which stood plain tables, lit with unsettling, bright spots, the LC was more happy with her prospect of a wall furnished with a fine old pew, and attractive timber tables lit low by warm-looking large square copper shades. The LC, whose pert nose is seldom to be found outside The World of Interiors is something of a specialist in such things, and she was beginning to show signs of approval of The Oak’s quirky decoration. It was, she said, certainly original, with a hint of wit to it. She was pleased to point out to Mr P its more interesting aspects. The enjoyment this offered was enhanced by the arrival of the first course. The LC glowed happily as she piled into her Beetroot whipped goat’s cheese, roasted golden beets, toasted sunflower seeds, Lane Cottage leaves, honey Chase Vodka dressing – a collection of outstanding ingredients which she felt came together to great effect. Mr P was more than pleased, too, with his Potted duck confit, garlic aioli and toasted ciabatta. The pulled duck in its pot had a particularly interesting rustic chic to it. For the next course, Mr P abandoned the Pinot Grigio and ordered a large glass of San Millan, rioja reserva, 2008, a satisfying wine, well worth £7.50 for a large glass and a good match for his Duo of hogget, nicoise potatoes and mint jus – an unusually wrapped, slow roast shoulder of lamb and a brace of small chops – providing a strongly flavoured contrast, and evidence of real skill in the kitchen. The LC’s Duck breast with rhubarb and ginger purée was cooked just the right side of rare that she likes and which she kindly allowed Mr P to sample (but only after he’d polished off his lamb). They rounded off their dinner with Lemon and lime cheesecake, served with delicious mojita granita and lime tuile, all light and zesty. In their postprandial review, they found, unusually, nothing at which to cavil in what they felt had been an exciting, uplifting dinner and were more than happy to overlook any minor shortcomings with the decoration of the place – even the giant knife and fork. www.misterpernickety.com

The sixth Arcadia Festival is in Leintwardine, Kingsland and Downton and this year has the theme Youth, Age and Love. Arcadia, this year extended to include film and poetry, is devised and directed by composer/pianist Eleanor Alberga and violinist Thomas Bowes and brings together what Christopher Morley of the Birmingham Post called a hand-picked bunch of world-class instrumentalists. Concerts in the historic 14th century Leintwardine church, its fellow Norman church in Kingsland, and in the delightful rural setting of Downton, will again bring superb musicianship and three compelling programmes to this ancient and beautiful part of Herefordshire. For more information on guest artists, our poet-in-residence Pele Cox and the poetry event 3:00 pm Saturday 3rd October at Aardvark Books, Brampton Bryan; the screening ‘Late Quartet’ 3:00 pm Friday 2nd October in Leintwardine and all other fringe events please go to: www.arcadiamusic.org.uk Tickets: £15 each, two concerts for £25, three for £30 from Ludlow Assembly Rooms 01584 878141 www.ludlowassemblyrooms.co.uk or order from local agents 01547 540356, 01568 709569. grass roots Deep Heat T

Planning Session

HIS summer I travelled to Andalucía. I arrived in a heat wave, early and intense even by Spanish standards. It was 41 degrees by the time I reached Seville on 10th July and the walls and pavements were still radiating heat at 11.00 at night. The mountains beyond Seville were fresher, but the heat was taking its toll upon local crops. Organic Chestnut farm, Andalucía

Changing Landscape Despite all the dire warnings about hold-ups at Calais, the only real problem was the London tube strike. I walked from Euston and just managed to catch my train from St Pancras International to Paris.

Europe by Train Popular opinion says the easiest way to get to Spain from UK is to fly. But I wanted to travel from Knighton to Sevilla by train. I was going to do some writing, and it was climate related. I had come across a new company called Loco2 that sets out “to make booking trains across Europe as easy as booking a flight.” The small team at Loco 2 have put together some clever software that simplifies booking trains in and across Europe and they now work with many of the big train companies including Renfe in Spain, SNCF in France and Eurostar. You can plan your journey and order the whole thing online, with print-at-home tickets for many routes. Loco 2 have also developed a tool that tells you the carbon dioxide savings you can make by taking the train in comparison to flying the same route. Air travel is still the fastest growing contributor to climate change. The huge increase in aircraft pollution is mostly because of the growth in air traffic since the sixties, but Eurostar recently commissioned independent research to assess the CO2 per passenger produced by a LondonParis Eurostar journey compared to a London-Paris flight. They found that taking the train to Paris instead of flying cuts CO2 emissions per passenger by 90 percent.

The next morning it was the high-speed TGV to Barcelona. This is a long journey, but from the upper deck the views, especially along the coast, are fantastic. The changeover at Barcelona was a bit rushed and in future I would plan to stay at more destinations along the way. One good thing though - Spanish trains are on time. They are also very sociable with friendly, lively bars. My most memorable experience, however, was getting off the air-conditioned train at Madrid to walk into a wall of heat. There is no preparing yourself for the 25-degree temperature change between Wales and Southern Spain. From Madrid to Seville takes just over 2 hours in an AVE train. The scenery along my route had steadily transformed from lush in Mid Wales - through the patchwork crops of central France and vineyards to the South – and finally into sun baked mountains, scorched earth, magnificent solar arrays and lunar landscapes between Madrid and Seville. I was picked up by car and taken by Sam to Finca Buenvino. Time to get writing. Turning Point By the time I left Spain, temperatures were peaking at 48 degrees. This extreme heat, unimaginable until you experience it, is related to climate change. In Spain it’s getting hotter, in Wales - mostly wetter. This December is the Paris climate summit. I hope UK will follow America’s amazing lead and commit to real action. I’m not saying we don’t benefit from some deep heat from time to time – but there are limits – and the world has reached them.
