T was the time for my annual bike ride to Wilderness Festival near Oxford. As you know the purpose of my trip is not to meet up with David Cameron or to report on the various Michelin starred chefs who have tents there, (although it must be said Angela Hartnett does an extremely good line in valpolicelli by the glass). No, the only reason I go is so that I can report to you, the Broad Sheep readers in the state of the C roads and villages in the Cotswolds in case you’re not posh enough to go there yourselves. Each year I vary my route and this year it was Stroud’s turn for me to grace its Airbnb and pubs with an overnight charge up for the electric bike. The Airbnb was alright, I guess, although it did sport a sign saying ‘Mafia’ on the bedroom door and apart from a few Rolling Stones posters they seemed to have forgotten to either paper or paint any of my bedroom walls! The pub was a much more satisfying experience. Small Ads 4 I had been wanting to pay a visit Hugh’s bit 6 to the ‘Prince Albert’ for some time Letters 7 as quite a lot of the bands we book in Presteigne seem to have played Art 8 there. As soon as I arrived I felt very Art workshops 14 much at home. The landlady found Cinema 20 me somewhere to park my bike, Dance 24 (stupid country hick had forgotten to Food 26 bring a bike lock) and then I walked in the bar to discover old friends Music 28 ‘The Dirty Bourbon River Show’ from Music workshops 42 New Orleans were sound checking Band directory 44 for an unscheduled gig there. They were almost as surprised to see me as I them, but it Theatre showed all the signs of being a great night out. That was even before I discovered the 46 Jamaican food stall in the back yard selling jerk chicken, saltfish and ackee. Soon the Word 50 pub began to fill up with a fine collection of weirdos plus lots and lots of dogs. At one Grass roots 54 point I counted 15 mutts hanging around in front of the bar sniffing bums and fighting. Comp therapies 56 A pub with much character - 5***** The next bit of the ride was quite new to me and true to my ‘Five go mad in the We take no responsibility country’ style I spent a lot of time staring at Ordnance Survey maps at junctions but for the veracity of the finally found a really quiet and empty route most of the way from Stroud to Burford. information herein The only other vehicles around on these back roads are the occasional combine Clare Edwards harvester and of course lots of parcel delivery vans. Out there in the wilds of OxfordThe Lodge, Westhide, shire and Wiltshire DHL, UPS and Parcelforce rule the roads. I never worked out if it Hereford, HR1 3RQ was the same DHL van that was bobbing in and out and around me all the way across Tel: 01432 850444 the Cotswolds or if it was a gang of 20 different vans. But one thing is beyond dispute. Email: info@broadsheep.com Middle England has taken to internet shopping like a duck to the trout farm in Bibury. Website: www.broadsheep.com Blimey, Bibury central is like Tokyo market on a busy Saturday. Hundreds of Japanese tourists madly waving their mobile phones at anything that moves. Rows and rows of coaches, but 200 yards down the road - nobody. It’s quite shocking when you suddenly come across it after weaving around the country lanes on your own for a couple of hours. But nothing is quite as shocking as hitting a motorway flyover. Six lanes of maniacs going both ways at 70mph feels like an actual physical assault. Ironically the next thing this hypocrite had to do after Wilderness was go on a Speeding Awareness course! Yes I know, I know, but it was only 34mph in a 30 zone and I was on my way to pick up a bike. I had been looking forward to the course ‘cos I thought I’d be bound to get a funny editorial out of it, but the first thing they said was it was all in confidence and we must not discuss who was on the course or what anyone said - damn. Actually it wasn’t that much fun anyway. Plus it was four hours long. I did manage to raise myself at one point to have a go at car manufacturers who continue to build cars that all go over 100mph or even 200mph when the speed limit is only 70 and the technology to have cruise control at 30 and 40mph is easy peasy but the instructors had heard it all before and gave me short shift. The most amusing interjections came from the rather surly child/man sitting next to me who appeared not to be listening to any of the four hour lecture but occasionaly delivered a non-related one liner “Women always brake on corners” to a female instructor, and “Her from Coronation Street got off when she ran someone over” to nobody in particular. As you might imagine and despite being told we weren’t there to discuss our cases, most people only wanted to talk about how hard done by they were for getting nicked. “I was on the A5 at 4.30 in the morning, nobody else about doing 44mph in a 40 limit, it’s a bloody liberty”. Roll on driverless cars.

Headless Chickens A

DVICE to would-be leaders, Boris, Trump, Gove, Corbyn and other Men of Straw jostling in the queue: When you finally get your hands on the ultimate levers of power - as you think – it will feel like surfacing from a deep sea-dive, like climbing through the skylight onto the roof, like rising through the cloud layers in to the sun, and suddenly there will be no-one there except you. Nobody above you, no-one ahead of you. Everyone else has been eliminated. You’re the tops! You’re Mahatma Gandhi and Napoleon Brandy! This is Everest and Olympus. Your theory had always been that there was someone above you taking decisions over your head, and overturning your best laid plans. But where is she/he now? Finally you have got rid of him! The bastard! Is that her broken corpse on the pavement below? Hah! Gordon took little toni for a cliff-top walk and nudged him over the edge, whilst not himself spotting that there was a conga-dancing queue behind him, which he then led along the edge of the same old eroding cliff - briefly. And then you discover that although you do now have the penthouse suite, and the deepest pile carpet, and all the best executive toys, somehow real decisions seem to be thin on the ground, your best laid plans are still being frustrated, watered down, delayed at some level or other, and all you experience is the pressure from below, as the conga-dancing queue that snakes out behind you nudges you gently but irresistably towards the edge. Soon it’ll be your turn. The Romans had the Tarpeian Rock, amongst other things. The Russians still practice assassination. These days we Brits have motions of no confidence, back-room hand-shakes, the nod in the corridor. Men in suits give the thumbs down, shrug their shoulders and turn away as the ground vanishes beneath your feet. And you were never really in charge, because like Ronald Reagan or Zaphod Beeblebrox you were just an actor hired to cover up for the International Corporate Mafia, a front, a cardboard cut-out, a light-

weight, window dressing, a cameron chosen to clown in front of the crowds and distract the cameramen, there to keep everyone ignorant of the real decisions, gameplans and balance sheets being redrawn and rebalanced by a whole lot heavier crew behind padded doors in the hind-brain, or in some cellar in Beijing. But of course! power doesn’t really reside at the top. It resides in the hands of two sets of people – the back-room boys, the dark-suited Mafiosi, the Old Etonians, the KGB fellas - even the Welsh have the Taffia – who stand in the shadows and are far cleverer than you – they the ventriloquists – you the dummy and then there are the ones who are just one step back from the front end of anything, from the coal-face – the sergeants who are in charge of the junior officers, or the bureaucrats who fast-track, delay or arbitrarily misdirect crucial messages, like ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen the postal clerk in Catch 22, or the fund-raisers, the shop stewards, the butlers, the quartermasters, the men who run the NAAFI, the Milo Minderbenders. The only limit on their power is their own ambition, which may blind them to the fact that they already have more unbridled power than the people who appear to be their superiors. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Witness the burnt-out shell of little toni blair. Nobody pays any attention to what he says anymore, not after Iraq, because the Americans trussed him up like a naked supermarket chicken with both arms and both legs knotted together behind his back, his giblets removed and George Bush’s arm up his arse waggling him about like the ventriloquist’s dummy, his disengaged chicken-head twitching absurdly on one finger of a giant Uncle Sam. Picture it. Another picture: Sitting out on a warm evening, at a pavement cafe in Paris, 1848. As the cigars are lit a revolutionary mob rushes past shouting slogans; a chair or two is overturned. A glass smashes. There was a lot of it about in that febrile summer. Shortly afterwards when the ragamuffin crowd has passed, a well dressed but rotund man puffs into view and comes to a halt at our table. “Where have they gone?” he gasps, leaning on the table and wiping his brow. I gesture vaguely up the street, and shrug “They have left us in peace, c’est tout” I say. He looks despairingly in the direction I have pointed and makes as if to set off again, - “But what is it to you?” I ask, “I am their leader” he says, with a theatrical gesture “Where they go, there I must follow...” So off he went. Hugh Colvin

Letters Hi Julian So you got to Tindouf one time? Did you pass through Ghardaia and El Golea or come up from Mali? My father decided one time that we would go to Tamanrasset for our Easter escape from Algiers but after days of traversing flat featureless rock; he called “Enough” at El Golea and we spent our holiday there. I remember some guy by the pool blasting out “Daniel My Brother” by Elton John. It was hot and we had not coated the car to escape the sand blasting of a sand storm... Cut to the chase! Isn’t it time for the world to admit that all this 2C is well out? It’s a fudge and way out... is that not obvious now? 250-350 ppm is surely max and now we have just got to find a way of getting back there. Do you remember that in 1992 at Rio climate stability was 60% reductions to be achieved by 2012? So how does that fit with today and with feedback loops of Nox and methane not even “written in” (because we have no evidence until they happen to base the science on)... now we have a massive carbon debt whether or not we decarbonise by tomorrow that will keep on “pushing” temperatures UP! So we have to start thinking about removing CO2 from the atmosphere and at scale. I have put a motion to this effect through the Presteigne and Knighton Labour Party branch of the CLP; surely now we have to face facts and start removing the industrial carbon debt from the atmosphere. Back to 350 ppm... mitigation of a scale like “Greening the Sahara.” I have written various screels to Tony Juniper at WWF and Hay Festival calling for some focus. I believe that in the geological past the shift to the next stability once the methane starts to release has taken as little as 10-15 years. Peter Hack Reply to Peter Hack letter Your trip to Tindouf in the Sahara sounds interesting! I and my BBC colleagues, in the late 1970s, had to fly from Algiers, because of time pressures. You are right on target regarding carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere. When the American writer Bill McKibben became a full-time climate campaigner around 2007 he wanted to refer, in the title of his new group, to a maximum level of CO2. He asked the leading US climate scientist James Hansen if it should be 450 parts per million. Hansen thought that was far too high and McKibben eventually called his movement 350.org – though, as we know, CO2 levels passed 400 ppm some time ago. Labour’s position on fossil fuels has improved markedly in recent years, not least due to pressure from communities living under the threat of fracking. Regarding Tony Juniper, recently given a top job at WWF, you might like to ask him whether he is still acting as an advisor to Drax Group, which gets huge government subsidies for burning wood at its power station in Yorkshire. Most of the wood is imported from the USA. Juniper defends this as a “sustainable” practice. I side with the eco groups on both sides of the Atlantic which allege that burning wood to generate power is as bad as, or worse than, burning coal. Julian O’Halloran

Original oil paintings, old master copies and examples of restoration. 6th - 16th September The Chapel, Ashford Carbonel, Ludlow, SY8 4BX. Open 11-5pm

cinema FIRST REFORMED (15) Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a depressed priest with a diminishing congregation, a drink problem and a growing unease over the financing of the populist mega-church under whose wing his ancient Dutch Reformed chapel operates. Then along comes newly pregnant Mary (Amanda Seyfried, While We’re Young) another broken spirit who’s concerned that her eco-warrior husband (Philip Ettinger) is contemplating suicide if she goes ahead with the birth of a child who’ll inherit a dying planet. At her request, Toller counsels the borderline deranged husband and thus begins a series of events that grow ever darker as the film – itself shot in brooding near monochrome – reaches its quite extraordinary climax. Never afraid to tackle moral ambiguity (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, American Gigolo), this is writer/director Paul Schrader’s most complex work since 1997’s Affliction and a career best performance from Hawke. Herefordshire Life Through a Lens

LEAN ON PETE (15) C h a r l i e P l u m m e r, so good in All The Money In The World here plays another Charley, troubled son of rootless Ray (Travis F i m m e l , M a g g i e ’s Plan) who’s too busy pursuing sexual conquests to be much of a single dad and as they move into another run-down homestead finds a job at an equally shabby racetrack with irascible trainer, Del (Steve Buscemi). Via Del’s cynical jockey, Bonnie (Chloë Sevigny, Alien: Covenant), Charley soon realises that Del’s aging horse, the titular Lean On Pete is destined for the abattoir, prompting him to abduct his new four-legged friend on a hardscrabble cross-country journey that’s both moving and suffused with hard realities. British writer/ director Andrew Haigh has form with works that challenge preconceptions within naturalistic, low-key settings (45 Years, Weekend) and this affecting, coming-of-age story is just one such.

THE NEGOTIATOR (15) Having played brilliantly against type in Baby Driver, John Hamm somewhat reprises his Mad Men persona with much cradling of a whisky glass in this espionage thriller as ex-diplomat Mason Skiles, recalled to the scene of his wife’s death during a botched CIA operation that he essentially orchestrated. Originally titled Beirut after its war-ravaged, 1980s backdrop, this mustn’t be confused with Gary Gray’s 1998 cop drama of the same name as a sharp script by Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, the Bourne franchise) invests much capital in Skiles’ talent as a fast-talking operator. But after years boozily mediating tedious labour disputes back in the USA, Skiles finds himself the only person universally trusted in a tense Middle Eastern hostage deal alongside his CIA handler, deftly played by Rosamund Pike with her best yank accent. Gripping, complex and credible, and that’s just Hamm. 28 Sept A MAN CALLED OVE (15) Colwall VH 01684 540926 28 Sept GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (PG) Longden VH 07539 545846 28 Sept THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY (12A) The Red House, Albrighton 01902 373854 29 Sept THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI (15) Belmont Hall, Wellington www.theclifton.org 29 Sept FINDING YOUR FEET (12) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805 30 Sept DARK HORSE: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY OF DREAM ALLIANCE (PG) New Inn, Pembridge 01544 387571 1 Oct SUFFRAGETTE (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911

R PERNICKETY’S erratic life journey was marked at the end of July by a milestone birthday; he will reveal no more than that he won’t see twenty again. However, the anniversaire at least provided two opportunities for the consumption of better than average cuisine. Mr P’s older brother, former TV broadcaster and Babbling Head on the BBC, arrived by iron horse at Ludlow, where he had booked a table at Mortimer’s in Corve Street. Despite Mr P’s previously expressed reservations over the style and ambience of this place [see Broadsheep April 2016], he enjoyed his sibling’s torrent of views and other useful information over an exceptionally good lunch, which reminded him that the chef at Mortimer’s is a former assistant to legendary one-time Ludlow chef, Claude Bosi, under whom he obviously learned a great deal. Mr P also hosted dinner for his noisy issue, his Lovely Companion and a couple of wrinkly chums at the Riverside Inn by the Lugg at Aymestrey. When Mr P is asked to recommend places to eat in the region, the Riverside always makes the cut, and it didn’t disappoint on this occasion. The chef/proprietor is inventive and runs a supremely slick brigade de cuisine. Although the LC still purses her lips a little over the recent re-fit, and the sound of traffic racing over the Lugg bridge can be a little intrusive, Mr P enthusiastically endorses it. Before getting to the nitty-g of this month’s review of the Cottage of Content in Carey, South Herefordshire, Mr P is excited to convey the good news that two threatened local pubs now stand a strong chance of being saved by their communities. The Bell at Yarpole was last reviewed by Mr P for the readers of the Woolly Organ in May 2017, then at the very nadir of its recent disastrous history. The food was inedible and the decoration unspeakable. It is, nevertheless, a fine building that has been abused for the last decade or so by a series of clueless tenants who had foolishly signed exploitative, no-win tenancies with the heinous PubCo that owned it. Now at last Enterprise Inns, no doubt experiencing financial pressures of its own, have decided to sell it, and the village are setting out to buy it for the market price of £325,000. Anyone who wants to support this initiative can get involved. [www.themortimercbs.org]. The villagers of Orleton have also recently learned that they can buy the freehold of their lovely old Boot Inn, if they can rustle up £250,000. [www.thecommunitybootinn.co.uk] Mr P wishes both the very best and plans to review a couple of other thriving community pubs in a future issue of the Woolly O. Mr Pernickety visited the Cottage of Content in the hamlet of Carey, near Ross with an old friend, an aging artisan, former grand fromage in the London art world, now a skilled maker of gentlemen’s furniture in rural Shropshire. The Cottage is an exceptionally pretty pub, a freehold inn that has escaped the worst ravages of landlord improvement. Mr P first ate there with a gathering of Herefordshire drinkers, when he lost a large bet with the landlord that Mr John Major would not become the next prime minister (and hopes he won’t do the same regarding the infamous Mr Al Johnson).

The food was good then; Mr P looked forward to seeing if, some four or five chefs later, it still was. Just driving to the pub offers an enjoyable prelude to a visit. To the south, where the Wye flows through water meadows unchanged in centuries, racehorse trainer, Venetia William’s handsome charges can be seen grazing the paddocks on the other bank. The Cottage is set on a bend in the narrow lane on a terrace above a small brook, and a picturesque stone bridge. Good solid tables sit on the terrace, among trees and shrubs which frame the white-washed walls of the building. Inside, worn flagstones and much authentic beamery is unspoiled by a few bad choices of furniture – the rest of which sits well enough. The bar has the pleasing air of a place where local folk – squires, farmers and hands alike – have happily guzzled beer for centuries. Mr P and his guest, the Aging Artisan, did the same – at least to the extent of half a pint of always delicious Hobson’s Best while they decided what to eat. They had been allocated a pleasantly battered little table by a window, but the Aging Artisan is a committed smoker who wanted to sit out on the terrace, in the sunshine. The AA, an erudite man of epicurean tastes, laid into his Chicken Liver and Pork Pâté, roast pepper and chilli jam, and crisp olive toasts with unrestrained gusto, declaring with a full mouth that the texture of the terrine and tang of the chilli confection were excellent. Mr P had a nibble that confirmed that view, while his own Beetroot pannacotta, crumbled stilton and walnuts also offered the fresh new tastes and contrast that the gourmand seeks. The Pork Plate that Mr P had next contained medallions, belly, chorizo and crackling with champ potatoes and red cabbage – all delicious with the clever addition of the chorizo, apart, that is, from a chewy strand of unauthentic-looking and slightly sour crackling. The AA made was making happy grunting noises over his Lamb Shoulder Confit with Rosemary Crust and remarked how well-seasoned both dishes were; neither eater had touched the salt or pepper pots. With his lunch Mr P drank a large glass of Chilean Merlot, La Laguna, described on the list as ‘a balanced wine with a pleasant sense of creamy ending’, which also described the Turkish Yogurt dessert he had chosen. He and the Aging Artisan agreed that they had just eaten as good a lunch as they had in a long time, in a near perfect bucolic setting. Mr P thoroughly recommends. www.misterpernickety.com

grass roots Time to celebrate an American climate scientist D

URING a heat wave thirty years ago James Hansen, a top US government climatologist, told a US congressional hearing that he was 99% confident that a recent sharp rise in temperatures was caused by human activity. Hansen was employed by NASA – the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In 1981 he had become head of its Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. Hansen’s evidence to a senate committee in June 1988 put global warming firmly on the map in America. It got wide media attention and even impacted on the presidential election campaign which was then underway. Although Hansen knew there could be heavy official pressure on him because he was on the government payroll he went out on a limb and stated his views on climate change in strong terms. On June 23rd he told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, “The earth is warmer in 1988 than at any time in the history of instrumental measurements. There is only a 1 per cent chance of an accidental warming of this magnitude. The greenhouse effect has been detected, and it is changing our climate now.” To ram home the point he told reporters, “It’s time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here.” The temperature in Washington DC reached over 100 degrees F that day (about 38 degrees C.) And the hearing took place in a notably hot room. It had been organised by Timothy Wirth, a senator from Colorado. He reckoned that expert evidence about global warming would have more impact if it was given when temperatures were soaring. A few years ago Wirth told the PBS programme, Frontline, that his staff took advice from the Weather Bureau and deliberately scheduled the hearing on what was likely to be a sweltering day. “It was stiflingly hot that summer,” says Wirth, “…you had this drought all across the country, so the linkage between the Hansen hearing and the drought became very intense.” Wirth also revealed that the windows of the hearing room were opened in advance, to counter-act the air conditioning. “So, Hansen’s giving this testimony, you’ve got television cameras back there heating up the room and the air conditioning didn’t appear to work. So, it was sort of a perfect collection of events that happened that day, with…Jim Hansen, who was wiping his brow at the witness table and giving this remarkable testimony.” But did Wirth think that Hansen had run his draft evidence past top officials at NASA in advance? “Certainly, this was not cleared far up the line, what he had to say…it was on every channel, Hansen was widely reported. He went as far as anybody could have expected him to go, I think.”

54

Early the next year Hansen prepared to testify before another congressional committee, this time at the request of Senator Al Gore. But prior to that 1989 hearing Hansen learned that his draft evidence had been watered down by the White House, to cast doubt on his scientific conclusions. When Al Gore heard about that he set out to reveal the attempted censorship as he questioned Hansen at the sub-committee on Science, Technology and Space. The scientist told the senators he’d been forced to make changes which had the effect of seeming undermine his central claim that human activity was the chief cause of global warming. Hansen said, “I don’t think the science should be altered.” The White House press secretary at that time, Marlin Fitzwater, soon admitted that Hansen’s testimony had been altered. He claimed this was because his ideas were not shared by all climate scientists. More than a decade later in 2005 and 2006, Hansen’s views on global warming were again doctored by officials, this time within NASA itself. This was under George W Bush and followed a public call by Hansen for US leadership in cutting global greenhouse gas emissions. Hansen, who was still director of NASA’s Goddard Institute, told the New York Times he had been threatened with “dire consequences” if he continued to make such statements. Hansen also found out that the NASA press office was rejecting media requests to interview its director without referring them up to him. Far from being muzzled, Hansen went on to speak out forcefully in the years that followed and he was arrested several times at climate protests. At the age of 72 he retired from NASA in 2013 - to allow more time for campaigning. This year Hansen has claimed that most nations that signed the Paris climate pact of 2015 are failing miserably. He’s dismissed the pledges of cutting CO2 emissions by many of those governments as “a hoax”. Looking back over the last 30 years, it’s clear the efforts of US officials to distort Hansen’s evidence backfired badly and assured him of fame, indeed of hero status. In a future article I hope to look at the role of some of Britain’s own top climate experts Julian O’Halloran
