COUPLE of weeks ago tucked up by the fire at about 5 pm on a gloomy afternoon I turned on the telly and caught a repeat of Channel 4’s Four in a Bed. If you have never seen it, Four in a Bed is a competition where 4 sets of B&B owners visit each others establishment and give each other scores for hospitality, cleanliness, quality of breakfast and value for money. I spotted The Rhydspence Inn, Whitney on Wye, was one of the contestants (although the landlords have since sold it) and because I lived just up the road from that pub in the 70’s I watched all 5 episodes (they screen them in a bunch). Then, in a tribute to my addictive personality, I watched the next day’s series and was hooked! The programmes all follow an identical trajectory. Doris and Ian from the Seaview B&B in Weymouth turn up at Samantha and George’s pub in the New Forest and are shown to their rooms. They instantly begin an orgy of putting on white gloves wiping their fingers along the top of the wardrobe and the curtain rails, poking around the grout in the shower, and taking the bed apart in a search for escaped pubic hairs. Then it’s off for an afternoons, local, fun making cupcakes or canoeing up the river before a jovial evening meal (not part of the judging) and a disturbed nights sleep – too near the railway line, too hot, too cold. In the morning they all ask for a Full English – eggs too hard, too soft - they fill in their score forms (marks out of 10) and present them to their enraged hosts and scuttle off in their Beemer to the next place.
It only took me a couple of days to twig that this was not a light entertainment programme but a genuine, rats in a cage, evil, socio-psychological experiment. They all start off in episode one the best of pals and after the horse riding or pogoing they go on to have a friendly evening together but in the morning after filling in the forms the rumbling starts. “ There wasn’t any dust on the pelmets when I hoovered yesterday”. “Of course they got woken at 5.30 our pub is right next to the A93. What am I meant to do move the road?” Over the course of the next 3 days the rumbling gets louder until on day 5 they meet to discover how much money each team thought their room was worth and the identical accusations start. “ You’re just game playing to win the competition”. Of course they are, because IT IS a competition. It gets very nasty. “I hope I never see that bloody women again”. It’s a blue print for how to start a war. It’s a ‘how to’ manual for forcing 4 lots of quite pleasant people to expose their dark side on national TV. My favourite competitor was Raj Kumar a one-man band running a rather boring B&B in Northwood. As he explained to the other teams “I get up at 7.30 and then play golf till 12 o’clock so I’m not in the way of my staff” and then “This is not the usual breakfast I give the guests
I had it made specially to impress you lot!” Suck on that suckers.
Well I’m sorry if that last bit was a bit too lowbrow for you lot, my other recommendation is a lot more musical, in fact it couldn’t be more stuffed with music. This month I am urging you to go and check out The Apartment Sessions on YouTube. Between 2010 and 2020 led by a core group of 4 friends, Luke McGinnis, Evan Tyor, Drew Krasner, and Liz Maney, Apartment Sessions brought together large groups of musicians to record new orchestral arrangements of their favourite songs—in a VERY VERY tight spaces. Their largest session reinterpreted the Arcade Fire with the help of 89 musicians spread across 3 apartments. A big part of the project involves capturing this madness on camera. “Our Season One Finale, ‘Quiet,’ had 66 people in our Apartment. We had people in every room— even 2 upright bass players in the bathroom. Everyone gets to know each other really well while sitting together on a bunk-bed or on the kitchen counter,” says co-founder Evan Tyor. Their goal here isn’t to make money but to build a diverse community through music and collaboration. They recently recorded Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke” on an empty subway car, so its not just apartments.
My personal favourites include their version of Quiet the Tim Minchin songhttps://youtu.be/WadO2GVzo7k?si=tKU_Zo9ssnXF_a8m Vanisha Gould, Donovan’s Dream –https://youtu.be/ftCts-LRpmg?si=kqWKBIouk07oi5c7 And Sly and the family Stone’s, Everyday People –https://youtu.be/3A31s7K0OCQ?si=nBH856PmpCvbcr7i

AQUESTION for you to ponder: what are the essential requirements for someone to become a philosopher?
Over the years I’ve collected some weird and wonderful suggestions. Here’s just a small sample:
• to have enough money not to need a proper job.
• to have nothing better to do with your time.
• to know how to smoke a pipe.
• to be able to use obscure foreign words even when perfectly good English words are available.
• to be able to talk about philosophy books you’ve never read and have no intention of ever reading.
• to pretend that every problem is far more complicated than it really is.
• to have a firm opinion on any subject, especially ones you know absolutely nothing about.
• to have a strong accent - Glaswegian is always a winner - thus insuring that however barmy your views, there’s no chance of your ever being found out.
That’s quite enough of that, thank you. Allow me to offer a few suggestions of my own.
Philosophy starts with curiosity. No curiosity, no philosophy. It’s about recognizing what’s odd and mysterious in the everyday and allowing the mind to generate searching questions. It’s also about sticking with a problem, like a dog with a bone. But in addition to these essential qualities, there’s a much neglected requirement; the need TO LISTEN.
The need to listen means you accept that philosophy is a game for more than one player. It locates philosophy in the community and in the lived experience of its citizens. Of course, at times philosophy will be a solitary activity, because thinking is ultimately solitary, but what to think ABOUT, for most people, comes from interacting with one’s fellow travellers, which means listening, and DISCUSSING. But this raises a key question: when is a discussion NOT a discussion?
It seems that the makers of a recent radio programme could see precious little difference between discussion and a no-holds-barred wrestling match. In the programme four panellists from various backgrounds - journalism, academia, etc - were to ‘discuss’ a current ethical issue. Several speakers presented their views on the topic before being interrogated by the panel. This formed the bulk of the programme, which finished with a feeble attempt at drawing the threads together.
Let me declare a personal interest in this matter. The promoting of discussion, with students of one sort of another, has played a major role in my philosophical adventures. But any discussion is far from straightforward. Success ought never to be taken for granted, it’s all too easily derailed. At its best, however, discussion can be a life-affirming, liberating and creative experience. Indeed, it’s no exaggeration to say that for some people a
discussion can be a kind of re-birth, with listening at its very epicentre. On more than one occasion I’ve heard students say that being properly listened to was a new experience, enabling them to express feelings and opinions that, up to then, they had kept closely under wraps. Similarly some participants have been known to admit that for the first time in their lives they felt that their ideas had been ‘taken seriously’.
It’s obvious that philosophy, at its best, deals with problems that are complex, baffling and perennial. So an element of humility should be present in any encounter claiming to be a philosophical disccusion. An appropriate frame of mind would be - ‘I must listen carefully to this speaker because it’s possible that he/she has insights that I don’t have’. An inappropriate frame of mind would be - ‘I can use this discussion to reinforce my opinions. If someone thinks differently from me, it’s my chance to show them why they are wrong’.
The radio programme, it seems to me, was a masterclass in how NOT to discuss a topic, for as soon as you hear participants interrupting one another, with several speaking at the same time, and shouting to get their views across - you know it’s high time to switch off and listen to something else. Anything else - except, of course, Today in Parliament.
Someone I know, a partner in a long but stormy marriage, has a mug with a cartoon showing a wife vigorously berating her husband. Meanwhile the husband is shown calmly using his computer. The caption reads: “Why don’t you listen to me when I’m shouting at you?”
It’s a moot question whether the tightening grip of I.T. on all our lives is robbing us of our ability to listen, shortening our attention span and reducing our face-toface encounters to a minimum. If so, ought we not be alarmed? One thing is for sure - without a willingness to listen, without a decent attention span, and without regular face-to-face human contact, philosophy is a non-starter.

You’d be forgiven for thinking, ‘Has he lost his marbles?’ Because your reviewer has never covered a comic cartoon here before and if asked, would tell you that the last animated character he’d warmed to was Felix the Cat. However as a slave to my wallet I had to review the fourth in the $1.8billion franchise elsewhere and must say it was a hoot. Po, the eponymous, genial panda voiced with a gravelly charm by Jack Black, is a ‘dragon warrior’ fighting the good fight in the Valley of Peace under his mentor, Shifu (Dustin Hoffman). His foe is now a villainous chameleon (series newcomer Viola Davis) who seeks to bring back a cadre of evil-doers from earlier outings. Okay, this relatively short – by current bum-numbing standards – 94 minute affair is aimed squarely at kids but the colour-rich, gosh-gee animation and genuine wit are well worth you sneaking into see it.

DUNE: PART TWO (12A)
If, like me, you couldn’t finish Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel on which it was based, you may also have found Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film narratively challenging, even confusing but were blown away by its visual might, so you’ll pleased that his sequel has overcome much of the former and surpassed the latter. Paul Atreides (Timotheé Chalamet) has now grown from the uncertain son of his ruthless mother (Rebecca Ferguson) to become a determined warrior leading the Fremen’s fight against the wily Harkonen over control over the unforgiving desert and its spice trade. New to the mix are Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken with Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgård and Josh Brolin reprising their pivotal, often bloodthirsty roles. Yet perhaps the most impressive aspects of this 167 minute, but always compelling epic are Patrice Vermette’s production design, Grieg Fraser’s extraordinary cinematography and Hans Zimmer’s all-enveloping sound track. Not to be missed.

MISTER Pernickety happily confesses that Jules is one of his most favourite places to eat in Herefordshire. There has always been so much about the place to evoke avid approval. First, of course, its former chef and co-founder, Jules Whitmarsh, who sadly ambled off to the great Celestial Kitchen a year ago, earning a welldeserved half-page obituary in The Times. He was a witty, forthright man, and clever too, having been awarded with an exhibition to Trinity College Cambridge, which he left with a 2nd in English.
Weobley
itself – as suitable as any Herefordshire settlement for depiction on chocolate boxes –has always had a cossetted spot in Mr P’s affection. In the late ‘90s, he was invited to a ‘literary’ dinner party which was featured on Channel 4 as one of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s ‘TV Dinners’, being held in a pretty timber-framed house in the village. Regrettably, Mr P had also been at Hereford races that afternoon, invited there by a friend who had a winner in the first race. The obligatory celebrations meant that by the time he had to leave for the dinner which started early for the convenience of the television crew, he was already a little wobbly in his movements and diction. It turned out not to be an ideal debut for his career on television.
Jules at lunchtime has turned itself into a café/ bistro, properly relaxed with a simple menu, a hum of intelligent-sounding conversation, a glowing wood-burner, intriguing, pleasing pictures on the walls, intimate tables between highbacked settles, wonderful jazz (Billy Strayhorn and Johnny Hodges) caressing the ears. Mr P. on his own with a newspaper, slouched comfortably on a settle and thought about what he was going to eat.
To start with he asked for a Duck Liver and Sherry Paté – a delicious, generous serving with super pickles. For a second course he chose a Chicken Tagine with roast peppers and chickpeas, partly for a desire for diversity and to counter a long-held, unworthy prejudice against tagines in general. There were historical justifications for his bigotry. As a young merchant adventurer in the early ‘70s, Mr P regularly drove south through Europe to catch the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta and Morocco, usually in some rickety old van that had done well to make it as far as Newhaven on the journey out. In Morocco he would drive around that then distinctly alien land, looking for stuff he could sell back in London. Having been warned that if
he bought hashish, the vendor would earn the stuff back again by tipping off Spanish customs, he stuck to belts made from camels’ skin and cured in something that smelt like the same animal’s effluent, little cotton chemises, small, embroidered leather bags in which to carry a copy of the Koran, djellabas and so on, for which there was an inexplicable demand in Kensington Market. Driving the road from Tangier to Marrakesh, Mr P was struck by the sight of small groups of American expats trying to farm the unpromising dusty landscape - a woman in a djellaba and bandana ploughing a stony field behind an ox and a camel, contemplating, no doubt, the arrival of a remittance from her pa in Pennsylvania at the American Express office in Marrakesh the following morning.
This venture in international trade didn’t make the young Mr Pernickety a rich man but it immersed him in some vivid life experience, including eating a Moroccan tagine of what might have been an elderly goat. Hence his bias against the dish. However, the chicken tagine at Jules turned out to be a rich concoction, exotically spiced, throbbing with pulses and good chunks of fowl. He must add that his enjoyment was enhanced by a glass of Jules’ own Weobley Brewing Company’s superb bitter – a great addition to the roster of outstanding brewers in the Marches.
Mr P, proud of dispelling one of his old culinary prejudices, celebrated by having a Crème Brulée which arrived in a bowl larger than normal, with several segments of orange floating in a dish of Grand Marnier on the side. It was the most uplifting thing he’d eaten for weeks, and he couldn’t escape the notion that dear old Jules was not far away, exerting his influence. As always, visiting Jules provided a warm, bright moment in a time of gloomy weather and distressing disorder in our ill-governed nation.

THE scene was set. And everything was in place, off the coast of Florida. The top brass were there. Not in great numbers, for there are only so many admirals and ministers you can squeeze into a fully-crewed submarine.
They were there to observe and celebrate the firing of a Trident nuclear missile, the weapon that carries Britain’s so-called independent deterrent. The VIPs included the head of the navy and the defence secretary, Grant Shapps. The missile - without a nuclear warhead of course – would travel more than three thousand miles over the Atlantic, towards Africa, before falling harmlessly into the sea. That was the plan.
The moment for the test firing came. And the button was pressed. But the missile flew not thousands, or even hundreds, of miles. In fact, it travelled only a short distance, before plopping into the water uncomfortably close to the submarine. The partial accounts that have emerged don’t reveal what was said by the naval chiefs or the ratings. But one can imagine that the slightly stale air in the sub may have been lit up by some very choice language.
One further embarrassment is that the last known Trident firing, in 2016, also ended up being a fiasco. On that occasion the MOD were pilloried for suppressing the truth for the best part of a year, before the media got wind of what had happened.
Regarding this year’s test firing, you would think naval chiefs would make sure the weapon delivery system worked, before inviting a cabinet minister to travel so far to see it. We owe what we know of the incident to the Sun newspaper. But the thrust of the story has been largely confirmed by a statement released by the MOD, in the name of Grant Shapps.
Nevertheless, if the journalistic accounts are close to being true, much of the MOD statement is surely a tissue of half-truths and downright lies.
The statement says, “The test reaffirmed the effectiveness of the UK’s nuclear deterrent, in which the Government have absolute confidence….”
Surely a missile that plops into the water a few yards, or hundreds of yards, from where it is launched, demonstrates that the system has serious flaws. The statement goes on to call the missile failure “an anomaly” and the MOD claims this malfunction was “event specific”. That surely means that “if we fired a second time. It would work.” To which, my reply would be, “prove it!”
It is then asserted that “there are no implications for the reliability of the wider Trident missile systems and stockpiles…” And there follows a bombastic claim… “the Trident missile system remains the most reliable weapons system in the world, having successfully completed more
than 190 tests.”
Make that 189! Or going back to 2016, 188. The statement then continues, “The Government have absolute confidence that the UK’s deterrent remains effective, dependable, and formidable.”
Pull the other one! You have to be joking! This is beginning to sound like a script from the brilliant 1980s Whitehall satire “Yes, Minister.” In the case of the Trident incident, you could argue that at least the submarine itself made it to Florida! But other recent events suggest that not all Royal Navy ships can be relied upon to make it onto the high seas.
During the unfolding Red Sea crisis, reference has been made to how much naval clout Britain should wield in the region to deter the growing number of attacks on international shipping. Some experts have suggested that one of the UK’s two aircraft carriers should be deployed.
However, reports suggest that the carriers can’t be used, because their support ship Fort Victoria is stranded in British waters. Why? Because it does not have the servicemen and women to crew it. There is, it seems, a dire shortage of personnel in the navy. And why is that? Because recruits don’t fancy long naval deployments away from home at current rates of pay.
That begins to have echoes of the situation I was droning on about in Broad Sheep a couple of months ago, in which men and women have been shunning the submarine service, because the length of deployments have been escalating, due to the growing need to keep vessels in the dockyards for maintenance and repairs.
This is also starting to appear rather like the backdrop to the months of industrial action by junior doctors, which the government has tried its hardest to ignore. As a result of this head-in-the sand approach, people are suffering. Likewise, the humiliation that Grant Shapps and his fellow cabinet ministers has undergone over the Trident test firing that went phut must be laid squarely at the door of this Tory administration and its innumerable predecessors.

SHADOW WORK, COUNSELLING & EXPERIENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together. Find out more about shadow work and schedule a free 20-minute consultation at: www.inner-truth.co.uk - Alasdair Kirk - 07792 405 660.
