OU know how it is, you’re driving back from Ross happily listening to Radio 4 and what comes on – bloody Moneybox Live. I have enough money problems of my own thanks; I don’t need to listen to other peoples. I switch to 5 live but it’s that afternoon presenter who doesn’t really think about the question he’s going to ask before he asks it. Then I have a brilliant idea. I’ll listen to Radio 1 and get ‘down with kids’. Check out the latest ‘hot grooves’. I know you think I’m about to start ranting on about the state of the current music scene but you are wrong, it’s what I expected i.e. Everything very similar, a few R&B grooves some rapping in the middle bit and lots of electronic drum beats. However these days if you want a hit your songs must be written to a particular formula and that dictates you must repeat the title or main line of the song over and over again. “I want to party. Party party party. I want to party. Party party party” etc etc. This constant repetition has had Small Ads 4 a very damaging effect on the DJs in this case I think they were called Vick and Jordan. Architecture While I was driving through Hereford they started talking about Vick’s sunglasses, which 6 he left on the tube and they were still talking about the aforementioned lost shades 40 8 Philosophy minutes later when I arrived in Presteigne. At no point did they mention the songs they 10 Art were playing, the weather or the war in Ukraine. Just Vick’s sunglasses. If someone tells Art workshops 14 you the same story over and over again it does make you remember it but it’s also very bleeding annoying. What’s the most annoying sound? A bunch of lambs separated from Cinema 20 their mums for the first time and dumped in the field behind your house? Well the tale of Dance 24 Vick’s shades is seven times as annoying as that! Food 26 However talking of sheep I have just taken delivery of three or four back copies of every Music issue of Broad Sheep since 1992 that I was keeping for posterity in someone’s storage 30 room. I decided to knock it down to one copy of each and in the process I began reading Music workshops 38 the back copies again. I had forgotten how funny Martin Orbach’s ‘Sheep Droppings’ were. Band directory 40 Martin was sheep farming at the time and spent many a drizzly afternoon checking for foot Theatre rot and wondering what the sheep might be talking to each other about. Here is one such 42 article from April 1994 he wrote for us in which they organise a sheep poetry competition. Word 44 As part of National Poetry week, we ran a competition to find Broad Sheep’s own Poet Grass roots 50 Laureate. Category One was restricted to those under one year old and we chose as a Comp therapies 52 title the line from the famous English Hymn ‘Brief life is here our portion’. In making the We take no responsibility award, Mr McAlister of the Meat and LIvestock Commission, who generously sponsored this Class, gave us a fascinating insight into the criteria which had influenced his selection. for the veracity of the “What I look for, “ he said “is a good lean shape, plenty of vigour but evidence of maturity information herein and above all not too much back-fat. That I believe is what the modern market requires.” All events listed may be The entry in this class was frankly disappointing, far too many whimsical offerings about subject to change growing up to be engine-drivers and nurses. with regard to Covid In Category Two, the Open Class, we chose as a title the words of the immortal Bard regulations. ‘If Music be the food of Love’, a line which brings together the twin elements of song and BROAD SHEEP, romance from whose conjunction so much of our great poetic tradition is descended. The Fred Bulmer Centre, This delicate fusion sadly eluded some of our entrants who concentrated unduly on the Wall Street, Hereford, gastronomic aspect of the title as in this rather bizarre entry from Boris. HR4 9HP The mountain sheep are sweeter, Tel: 07786 131159 But the valley sheep are fatter, Email: info@broadsheep.com But trying to shag Rita, Website: www.broadsheep.com Is like sausages in batter. Boris submitted over 150 poems and although the judges were impressed by the size of his oeuvre it was felt that he lacked the ability to handle the range of emotions which marks out the true poet. We reprint a couple more extracts below. Song by Boris To his Coy Mistress by Boris Sweetest love, I do not go, Had we but world enough and time, For weariness of thee, This coyness, Rita, were no crime, Nor in hope the world can show, But at my back I always hear, A fitter love for me, Slack-gutted Roger shuffling near, But bear in mind that down the road, So stand thou still for halfa mo, There’s another thirty-three. I’ll jump up and have a go. However, the winner is a poem that was admired for it’s tense spare rhythms and above all for its powerful conflicting emotions. The poet’s deft intermingling of past and present tenses gives vivid life to the inner turmoil that threatens to engulf the central character. Unsure whether to blame herself or her lover, her confusion characterises the crisis of identity that confronts her sex in this post-feminist age. Of this autobiographical poem it can be truly said that the voice of ‘Rose’ speaks for all her ovine sisters. The Thick Rose by Rose Oh Rose, thou art thick, That bastard Boris, Who creeps in the night, In the howling storm, And just when you expected it least, Has jumped you again, the degenerate beast. Brutalist Dinosaurs L

OTS going on in Stratford at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, thanks to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s £1-billion Olympic Legacy project.

Two jewels in this East London cultural crown promise to be the V&A’s East Storehouse (opening in 2024) and the V&A East Museum, due to open its doors a year later. The Storehouse (won in competition by New York architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro) should be the most spectacular, with a huge three-level Central Collections Hall, housing, inter alia, the cream of 92-year-old British product designer Kenneth Grange’s Archive (creator of everything from the Kenwood mixer to the Kodak Instamatic camera) to a reconstruction of the office interior designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Pittsburgh department store mogul Edward J Kaufman. Until the Conran-funded Design Museum opened in Docklands in 1989, product designers had had a pretty raw deal in terms of public recognition of well-designed household items. Exhibits in the post-war Design Council’s London centre off Piccadilly were always a tad middle class (Habitat sofas, David Mellor cutlery). In the spirit of the Gare D’Orsay Museum in Paris, which seamlessly melds art, architecture, furniture and fashion, the V&A East’s all-enveloping Central Collections Hall intends to put that right. One of the most challenging ‘exhibits’ to be given a permanent resting place at Stratford will be a complete three-storey concrete section the V&A rescued when the Robin Hood Gardens estate at Poplar was being demolished four years ago. Its demise was mourned by everyone from Building Design to Zaha Hadid. The estate’s 213-unit slab blocks had been designed in 1972 by Alison and Peter Smithson, self-proclaimed high priests of the Brutalism movement (they coined the phrase from the French béton brut meaning raw concrete). The Smithson’s idea that their Poplar estate paid architectural homage to Le Corbusier’s Unité

Moved to Stratford? A missing section of Poplar’s Robin Hood Gardens

d’Habitation in Marseilles (completed 20 years earlier) was just window dressing for their adoring architectural students; residents knew it at ‘Alcatraz’. The scheme required heavily-fortified ‘noise barriers’ to minimise the sound pollution from traffic using the Blackwall Tunnel. In 2009 owners Tower Hamlets Council, refused listing, condemning it as ‘unfit for human habitation’. The V&A’s rescued section, soon to be rehabilitated in Stratford, will include part of the internal communal walkway plus two entire maisonettes, including their front and rear elevations. Not perhaps trophy hunting on an Easter Island scale, but certainly a fillip for surviving Brutalist groupies. Britain’s Brutalist movement was mercifully shortlived, producing such oddities as London Zoo’s Elephant House, the South Bank’s unlovely Hayward Arts Gallery and the City of London’s elephantine Barbican Centre. Then there was the late Owen Luder’s multi-storey car park, perched above Gateshead’s Trinity Square Shopping Centre like a beached aircraft carrier. Featured in the Michael Caine crime thriller Get Carter it was demolished in 2011. The critic Jonathan Meades never afraid to go out on an architectural limb - once described the Gateshead monolith as the equal of Lincoln Cathedral. One Brutalist monument which has survived for more than half a century - despite two concerted efforts by the local council to demolish it - is Preston’s gracefully sculptured Central Bus Station (1969), now protected by Grade II listing. As a paradigm of how to handle low-rise Brutalist housing, Neve Brown’s Alexandra Road Estate, Camden (1978) is in a class of its own. And another worthy survivor - thanks to the indefatigable developer Urban Splash - is Sheffield’s Park Hill Estate (1957-61), enjoying a renaissance as a private sector housing estate, comprising over 900 refurbished units, including student accommodation and artists’ studio-flats. Sadly, London’s National Theatre will be with us forever.

philosophy

Je Ne Regrette Rien E

dith Piaf claims to have lived a regret-free life. No regrets. None. ‘Rien de rien!’ Hard to believe, don’t you think? Also unconvincing is Frank Sinatra’s [slightly] more realistic admission - ‘Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention’. Who do these jokers think they’re kidding? No regrets? Just a few? Come off it. In the words of that splendid urban-warrior and crypto-philosopher, Victor Meldrew - I DO NOT BELIEVE IT! Do you? Although regret is a common enough human experience, attempting to think systematically about it isn’t exactly a piece of cake, such is its complexity. The problem is, like old age, it doesn’t come on its own. Closely related themes, such as guilt, forgiveness, disappointment, conscience, determination to improve and making amends, are never far away. Before you know it, you’re heading for the magical world of Moral Philosophy. [By the way, knowing that Broad Sheep readers like nothing more than a knotty philosophical conundrum, you might care to speculate on the difference, if there is one, between morals and ethics. Best of luck.] [Spoiler alert: there IS a difference.] Yes, regret throws up some weighty questions. For instance, while it can clearly have a debilitating effect on our lives, why do we often ignore its powerful transformative potential - providing the impulse to do better in the future? And if, as Piaf claims, she has no regrets, how did this come about? After all, her short life had been very far from trouble-free. So was it simply due to a stoical mental attitude and an ability to make the best of whatever trials and tribulations life threw at her? On the other hand, does the inability to experience regret indicate some underlying mental defect?

www.tents4elements.co.uk

The chances are you’re already deeply regretting reading this, so let’s, for heaven’s sake, lighten the mood with a real-life incident which hopefully might shed light on some of the dynamics of regret. Oxford Station. Rush hour. Platform heaving with people. The packed Birmingham train is about to leave. A man flings himself through the open door and asks, breathlessly, if this is the train to Moreton-in-Marsh. I tell him to get off at once. This is the train to Birmingham. He thanks me, adding that there’s nothing worse than getting on the wrong train. He gets off, smiling with gratitude. The train pulls out of the station. Having settled down to read a bit more of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason I immediately fall asleep. On waking it occurs to me that if doctors were to prescribe Kant’s works to chronic insomniacs, it would save the NHS millions. On the platform I asked a railway employee the two obvious questions: [1] Was there a train from Moreton to Birmingham? Yes. Soon. [2] What time was the next train from Oxford to Moreton? Nothing now until breakfast tomorrow. ‘Regrets I’ve had a few’ - and this was up there with the best of them. A regret, by the way, which has stayed with me to this very day, many years later. Why? But was I to blame? Yes and no. After all, it was a genuine mistake? Nothing deliberate, just a momentary lack of concentration. A ‘Senior moment’, though it’s unlikely that the beleaguered traveller saw it in that light. For all I know, he my well have been rushing home to deal with some life-threatening crisis. I can still clearly recall the man’s face. With any luck he can no longer recall mine. A further thought occurred to me: what about my fellow passengers? What was their role in this little tragicomedy? Unless they were all profoundly deaf and also unable to lip-read, they must surely have heard our conversation. In which case, why on earth did no-one intervene to prevent the double fiasco that was about to take place? Just a case of British reserve - frequently encountered on train journeys - or even a couldn’t-careless attitude, or even a hint of good old Schadenfreude? Yes, regret. Together with its close companions, is a tricky knot to untangle. But one thing is crystal clear; a life without regret, even if that were possible, is not to be desired, for regret involves the precious element of reflexion, an examination of what might have been, but also what could be in the future, given a bit of effort on our part. As the Greek gentleman said, an unexamined life is not worth living. As another man said, the unlived life is not worth examining. Philosopher-in-Residence

cinema THE DUKE (12)

The much delayed release of late director Roger (NOTTING HILL) Michell’s penultimate film is unashamed feelgood fare with the underlying social messaging that he successfully deployed in VENUS and LE WEEKEND. Here his protagonist is Geordie workers’ right activist Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent, also LE WEEKEND’s star) who in 1961 with son Jackie (Fionn Whitehead), elects to cunningly steal Goya’s Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery and use the reward money to fund t.v. licences for Britain’s pensioners. Based on a true story, Michell take few liberties with the actuality, especially the ensuing court scene when Bunton claims he merely ‘borrowed’ the painting, but much of the film’s beguiling narrative comes from his relationship with long-suffering wife Dorothy (Helen Mirren employing a rather dodgy Geordie accent). And thanks to clever use of period news footage and production design, THE DUKE looks as good as it feels. All reviews by Mark Williams

HIVE (15)

Based on another but much darker true story, Kosovan writer/ director Blerta Basholli’s Sundance-winning debut begins with Fahrije Hoti (an electrifying Yllka Gashi) doggedly searching for the body of her husband who ‘disappeared’ during the Kosovo war. In the small town where one of that conflict’s worst massacres occurred, the few males left are misogynistic elders who seem to spend all their time drinking coffee and carping and have little truck with Fahrije’s quest whilst she also struggles to support her children from bee-keeping. This disapproval is amplified when she decides to learn to drive and then starts a small business making both honey and a savoury condiment, a business which gradually attracts other young, mainly dispossessed women. The sense of determination, righteous indignation and subtle tension Basholli infuses her film with is palpable and has added resonance in the light of the current, unspeakable Ukrainian tragedy. A gripping ‘must see’. 5 April EASTER IN ART Exhibitions on Screen. The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock, 7pm, 01952 728911. The Courtyard, Hereford, 7pm, 01432 340555. food page The Bull’s Head, Craswall

M

R Pernickety, with his Lovely Companion had driven to Hay under a soggy sky the hue and texture of cold porridge. Beyond this was the prospect of visiting an isolated pub on the windswept flanks of the Black Mountains to eat dinner without wine (due to Lenten abstinence) in order to appraise it for the readers of the Woolly Organ. Luckily as they crossed the Wye, the rain ceased, ragged blue patches appeared in the west, and Mr Pernickety’s habitual though often inconvenient optimism was restored before they had started the six mile climb up winding lanes that lead to the scattered village of Craswall. Mr P had not visited the Bull’s Head for over ten years. It had always been for him a place of rare isolation and special character. For many decades it had existed as a remnant from a past century, with ancient peeling paper on the walls, heavily worn flagstones, and smoke blackened beams adorned with well-rusted banausic utensils – peat spades, dagging shears and such. On his last visit the pub had recently been taken over by the Mackintosh family who had gone some way to destroying the shabby inner charm of the place and were serving inappropriate food on square slate platters – a then prevailing though mercifully transient trend among pretentious restaurants. Soon after, the true intentions of the Mackintoshes were revealed when they closed the place and applied for permission to convert it into a private dwelling – an exercise which if successful can be very profitable indeed. After a prolonged local campaign to save the Bull’s Head, the planners did the honourable thing and the Mackintoshes slunk away. Nevertheless, the building remained unused for several years until the beastly virus struck, when a White Knight appeared and bought the place. As they approached the pub on a dark Friday night, Mr Pernickety must admit to some misgivings. There was a blaze of lights such as you might see on the promenade of a small seaside resort, and as they drew alongside, it was clear that a great deal of money had been spent. Mr P’s first reaction was a disappointed sourness in the back of his throat. They pulled into a tidy carpark next to a large open-sided oak structure housing tables and barbeque paraphernalia. At least, Mr P thought, the work was finely done which made up a little for the use of geologically inappropriate gravel – Cotswold cream in a region of old red sandstone.

26

The pub itself had been painted too pristine; concrete steps, in accordance with the government’s Health and Efficiency laws, had replaced some (though thankfully not all) of the ancient cobbled path. In a nod to tradition, the loos are still housed separately, requiring a stroll through the wind and rain (though now they are easier on the olfactories) The interior has been Farrowed and Balled (or possibly Edward Bulmered) into submission, but the age-worn floors are still there, as are the beams and old

serving hatches, and the furniture is of an appropriately battered rustic character. Log burners push out good natural heat and the overall impression is one of more or less acceptable bucolic chic. In any case what negative thoughts this may have created in the critical eyes of Mr P and his LC was soon trumped by the food they were served. They were happy with their table, Mr P perched on a settle with a thick sheep skin to soften the plank seat, amid slightly bare grey walls and glass shaded pendant lights that could have been dimmer. Reading the menu, they were aware that all the meat and much of the veg was grown or reared on the nearby farm of the family who had saved the place – a London-trained chef and a first-generation farmer of regenerative principles, with all the freshness of vision that implies – producing a menu that shone with creativity. First the LC chose a conflation of Smoked Anchovies, Leeks Vinaigrette and Crispy Duck Egg. There was, she said smiling, an immediate uplift in the contrast between these distinctive elements, while Mr P found his Parmesan Croquettes crunchy and cheesily succulent. Then he chose a braised shoulder of hogget (a teenage sheep), slow and deliciously cooked with lentils, capers and beetroot, a novel and happy pairing, served with good buttery mash. The LC who loves steak’n’frites above all things, was served a most flavoursome piece of beef (home grown Hereford or Belted Galloway according to the engaging young woman who served them). Her chips, cooked in beef dripping, were a special bonus. Mr P naturally helped himself to a slice of meat; it was perfect. It was worth noting that both these brilliantly prepared dishes were priced at £24 – not especially cheap but, astonishingly, the same price that Mr P had paid for a vile cassoulet at the Blue Boar in Hay a month before (see March’s Broadsheep). They ended their dinner with a flourish – a sublime and glorious tiramisu which Mr P can still taste. It was, if Mr Pernickety is to be frank, a challenge to eat great food without wine, but happily this didn’t diminish the enjoyment at all, but had he and the LC been drinking, the wine list looked fair and balanced, with a good house wine at £20 and a civilised-looking claret at £99. What the hell, Mr P thought, there’ll be a next time. Mr Pernickety - info@misterpermickety.com

grass roots Ukraine and Our Gas Supplies - Crisis? What Crisis?

I

ADMIT that I’ve pinched the last part of that headline from a tabloid newspaper report, right back in 1979. The paper was trying to convey the nonchalant manner of Labour prime minister, James Callaghan, as he returned to Britain from a summit on a beautiful Caribbean island. He was coming back to a country wracked by the socalled Winter of Discontent, which, Fleet Street judged, was bringing the UK to its knees by strikes and sky-high inflation. I don’t think Callaghan ever uttered the words “Crisis? What crisis?” – but words from him which failed to respond fully to the chaos, plus shots of him strolling with his wife on a beach in Guadeloupe, were used to suggest a leader a bit out of touch, and not fully tuned in to the hardships ordinary people were undergoing. That image played a part in sweeping the Tories and Margaret Thatcher into power at the next election - for what turned out to be a decade. OK, the invasion of Ukraine is utterly different. And I don’t want to imitate Callaghan’s fatal nonchalance. But there are ways of addressing the current crisis of rocketing gas and fuel prices that don’t involve abandoning all the measures which Britain and some of our European neighbours have taken so far to tackle global heating. However, there are a few dozen MPs and peers who have a visceral antipathy towards green policies and who have seized on the Ukraine crisis as a chance to try and derail the UK’s climate change strategy. Around fifteen years ago a group called the Global Warming Policy Foundation began to rubbish the idea of man-made climate change and to attack policies aimed at curbing it. They tended to deny or downplay man’s role in causing global heating. And recently a new body has appeared - the Net Zero Scrutiny Group. BBC News Online says that the group does not question the science of climate change but it asserts that “some of its members have close links to think tanks that have long queried the scientific consensus on global warming, and the necessity and cost of doing something about it.” On security of energy supply, these Net Zero sceptics tend to support fracking for shale gas, which the government is hinting it might reconsider. The Conservative Environmental Network summed up the case against fracking in a few words - “It’s unsafe, unpopular, and unsuited to the UK’s complex geology.” However, the brutal invasion of Ukraine has acted as a recruiting sergeant for the Net Zero sceptics. Over a single weekend in early March their ranks in parliament grew from around a score to about 40. An odd thing about them is that the more there are problems with polluting fossil fuels, the more they seem to focus on them. Whereas, for any household, surely the rational response to rising gas and fuel prices is to go for energy efficiency turning down the heating, cutting weekly car mileage, and avoiding holiday flights. And clearly Britain should provide urgent and generous support for all the fuel poor.

50

But back to the Net Zero sceptics. No one should write them off. We should all recall the Brexit referendum. There

is quite an overlap between the Net Zero sceptics and the Brexiteers. David Cameron was destroyed politically by his failure to grasp the appeal of the Brexiteers’ message, or to match their campaigning methods. Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine has put pressure on several politicians with links to Russian energy and resources firms. Lord Barker, who was an energy minister under David Cameron, is just one example. He resigned in early March as chairman of the mining company, EN+, part-owned at that time by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. It emerged that in 2019 alone Barker was paid about £4 million by for his work at EN+. As Barker’s resignation became known, we learned that he had been challenged in February by defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who said, “I think Lord Barker should explain why he works with people like Deripaska.” Deripaska’s alleged links with the Putin regime were questioned in 2018 by the US government, which applied sanctions to him and to EN+. Deripaska said that the sanctions imposed by Washington were based on “false rumour and innuendo”. The links to Russian firms of some senior figures in British politics should come as no surprise, according to Greenpeace UK. Its policy director, Doug Parr, has said, “We’ve long known that the oil and gas industry has strong connections right at the top of politics and this appears to extend to the Russian industry as well. Fossil fuel connections should be ousted from our political system so that we can get on with the urgent reconfiguration of the (energy) system we need.” And the clean air campaign group DeSmog has called on MPs and peers, to “ditch their shares in Russian oil and gas”. Britain is much less reliant on Russian gas supplies than are some of our European neighbours. But in recent years it appears that 4% or 5% of UK gas imports have come from Russia. According to Jan Rosenow, of the Regulatory Assistance Project, none of this would be needed if we insulated our homes properly and switched to heat pumps, as argued before by Broad Sheep. That won’t happen overnight, but it should be a top priority for the government. An energy efficiency drive in Britain in the next few years would give us a real chance of entirely cutting out our need for any gas from Putin. Julian O’Halloran
