KAY, okay I admit last months suggested cycle routes were a bit challenging, particularly the Talgarth one (over 1000ft of climbing). “You havin’ a laugh mate? I think I’ll stay home and watch the golf.” So here are three rides of a very different nature. This is cycling for lazy people, yes that’s right it’s cycling for you and that crappy old bike your sister lent you with the loose saddle and the pink handlebar grips. The two main features of these rides are geography and hydration. As you might dimly remember from your schooldays rivers flow downhill (Oi! Pay attention at the back there!) - ergo if you follow their course you will also be gently descending. However rivers round here are full of bad stuff these days as a result of the chicken shit from massive fowl concentration camps being spread all over our fields and so the weary peddler will need an alternative form of liquid refreshment. This requires a route with lots of pubs on the way, where one might stop and discuss the raw state of one’s backside with other cyclists. Here are three such routes centered around the Teme, the Lugg and the Wye. As I mentioned last week there is an increasing tendency for country hostelries to only open from Wednesday to Sunday, which is why I have included phone numbers. The Horse and Jockey, Knighton 01547 520062 to The Baron of Beef, Bucknell 01547 530549 to The Royal George, Lingen 01544 267322 Haven’t had a drink here for ages, but there are always a good crowd of people sitting outside at the tables watching the world go by. So just one pint for you and then we are off. Head past the station on the Clun Road, and then quarter of a mile down the road, on a sharp left-hand bend, head straight on down a lovely little lane that will carry you all the way to Bucknell Station alongside the railway and the River Teme. Then Presteigne electric bikers with the late, great you can either go left and left Nicola Humphreys, terrorize Bucknell 2011 again over the railway crossing and head into the village to the wonderfully named Barrel of Beef, for a top up, or turn right towards Brampton Bryan. Then if you turn first left, and then right you will miss the main road and come out at Brampton Bryan church with its stunning hedge! Then straight across the main road and a quick stop at Aardvark Books’ massive collection to buy a thin paperback to stuff down your trousers if that saddle is hurting. Then straight on till you meet up with the junction on the Lingen road and in two shakes you will be in the welcoming arms of the Royal George garden. 10 mls 135ft up 300ft down!
The Grange, Mortimer’s Cross 01568 709212 to The Corners 01568 708385, Kingsland to The Balance, Luston 01568 616801 to The Bell, Yarpole 01568 780515 How do you like them apples – eight miles, four pubs you could easily just ditch the bike and crawl round. Head off from the Grange, Mortimer’s Cross towards Kingsland, but after 50yds fork right onto a little lane parallel to the main road, and when you get to Kingsland main road, go right and then left into the middle of the village and the Corners Inn. Time for a swift half then down the lane on the left of the pub and follow the signs to Eyton (2 rights), till you get to Eyton Common; turn left and that brings you out on the B4361; turn left and you are in Luston Village and The Balance is on your right. Beware they have big (but friendly) dogs. More booze, then on up the B road for 300yds and you will get back onto a little lane signposted Yarpole. The Bell is a lovely pub in the middle of the village and from June 16th will have a new, very foodie, landlord, so I suggest you settle in for a long dinner, a couple of bottles of Côtes du Rhône, lose your sister’s bike in the car park, and call a cab. 8 mls (hic!) 200ft up 200ft down
The Red Lion Bredwardine 01981 500303 to The Yew Tree, Preston on Wye 01981 500359 to The Red Lion, Madeley 01981 250001 I know - weird, two Red Lions I don’t know Wye (get it?) The Bredwardine one is very fishy so get ready with your wildly exaggerated stories. “Honest guv it was four feet long and no I seem to have left my fishing licence at home” Then head off towards Moccas and Madley. In Moccas, by the war memorial, turn left signposted Preston on Wye and the village hall; then just follow that road. Don’t take any turnings and eventually you will get to the Yew Tree on your right-hand side. You can sit outside and congratulate yourself on finding such a tucked away gem (sorry, we all know about it). Just after the pub you need to take a left fork signpost Bridge Sollars and eventually this will dump you out on the road from Bridge Sollars to Madley. This is a bit of a rat run, but never mind you will soon be in the Red Lion at Madley (hurrah, a pub that’s actually open every day) unless you have made a wrong turn in which case you will be back at The Red Lion Bredwardine! 8mls 100 up 100 down i.e. flat Cover pic: Church Stretton Arts Festival. Yacht Owning with Oleg I
BUMPED into Oleg last week. You have probably read about Oleg. Took over most of the Russian cement industry in 1991 using high order commercial skills and a tank regiment. He was sitting behind a beaker of his usual vodka and gold dust, looking glum. ‘Well, Oleg,’ I said to him, ‘I hear they have seized your boat.’ They had, too. I had seen it in the papers. Five hundred feet long, missile defence system, four galleys, freshwater swimming pool, gym fully equipped for calisthenics and torture, usual stuff. ‘Tough luck, Oleg,’ I said, though my actual thoughts were, couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.
‘Tch,’ I said. ‘Square the shoulders. Accept ownership of the problem. Clean the tanks - ‘
Oleg smiled, calling to mind a Volga crocodile. ‘No vay,’ he said, ‘sit down, have drink.’
‘Excuse me,’ I said, ‘but I would have thought you had worries above and beyond the boat. Your bank accounts are frozen. Your planes are grounded. Your five houses in Belgrave Square have been confiscated, and all your immense wealth is inaccessible to you.’
‘No,’ I said, ‘thank you,’ for people who sit down and drink cocktails mixed by Oleg and his friends do not always get up again. ‘Bad luck about the boat, though, really.’ ‘Bad luck?’ said Oleg. ‘Listen. For vun thing, there is the crew. Two crews, one for winter one for summer. One hundred twenty peoples in all, skippers temperamental like principal dancer with Bolshoi ballet. Air conditioning alvays on blink. Big problem trying to keep fish in giant aquarium alive, and DC electricity supply to torture chamber also big problem. Plus have you any idea what sea air does to a Picasso, let alone a Rubens, though Olga -’ ‘Your wife?’ ‘No vay. Olga my special friend who is nail varnish influencer. Olga thinks Rubens vimmin are fat. She is throwink shoes at Rubens. On a boat even quite big it is hard to get avay from people particularly Olga. There is also difficulty of getting in to harbours on French Riviera by reason of draught and tendency of guests to shoot people. And then there is all the sea stuff.’
‘Ah,’ said Oleg. ‘I tell captain to tell chief engineer to send serf into tank with brush.’ ‘Whatever. Improvise. This builds character.’ ‘Already I have character,’ said Oleg. ‘Anyvay, they have tooken the boat avay from me. And if I find out who did it, I will be buying him drink. Normal drink, not radioactive. My life without boat has no worry in it. It is glorious, and this Olga thinks also.’
‘Sez you,’ said Oleg, looking weaselly and dropping more gold dust into his vodka. ‘There is always bitcoin and your so tolerant corporate structure in your so called Free Vurld plus flag of public convenience on merchant fleet. No, I am not short of bob or two. So the only thing that was really worrying me was the boat, it is psychological, vun dam thing after another. And now your fascist government have impounded boat, so no need to vorry about it no more.’ He paused, ambushed by a sudden thought. ‘But you know, Sam,’ he said, and there was a tear in his eye, the Volga crocodile. ‘I am to be honest very much missing the sea.’ ‘Then I suggest you swim home,’ I said. ‘Goodness. Is that the time already?’ Sam Llewellyn From the Summer 2022 issue of the Marine Quarterly, www.marinequarterly.com
‘Sea stuff?’ ‘Rustiness. Engines. Generators always packink up, mussels in cooling water intakes and stabiliser system failure that makes Olga sick in Prada handbag. Electronics destroyed by too much GPS spoofing vich is only common sense I ask you vot a vorld ve livink in. Spontaneous firing of antimissile system due to computer bug leading to destruction of four thousand seagulls and Bishop Rock Lighthouse.’ I wagged the head. ‘Owning a boat,’ I said, ‘is tough stuff. The boat owner lurches from emergency to emergency. It is part of the delight of things to land up in a strange country having blown out an entire suit of sails -’ ‘Sails?’ said Oleg. ‘Things made of cloth that catch the wind and propel the boat hither and yon.’ ‘Like engine, then,’ said Oleg. ‘Not really. As I was saying. A strange country, boat filled up with dirty diesel, so no engine. What do you do?’

Dad, have they started yet? A concert but not a gig, to which I took my 9-year old son. It was in our fine old parish church and it was being “given”, by a Contemporary Music Ensemble, but we had to pay. It consisted of atonal and arrhythmic pieces which had also foresworn the charm of melody. I guessed this would be the case but felt that we needed to experience live anything that other people take seriously before passing judgement - like Opera, Early Music, Mongolian Throat Singing and Heavy Metal - though seeing all of the above hasn’t necessarily changed my mind, except for the throat singing which was awesome, and Alamaailman Vasarat. There was an oboe, a clarinet, percussion, two violins, a double bass and a trombone; pre-19th C. acoustic instruments ultimately refined over the centuries to make graceful tones, but all now being repurposed to interpret 20th and 21st C. ideas and soundscapes for which they were not designed. “Wrong technology! Go electric, go digital.” I thought. So the “Contemporary” musicians came in and settled down and tuned up their historic technology and tootled and fiddled around, just like a proper orchestra before the conductor comes in - a randomised sound I quite enjoyed. I zoned out into a memory of a sea-side concert where the swooping gulls semed to be tuning their cries to the oboe. But the tuning went on … and on. Finally my son whispered in my ear, “Dad, have they started yet?” I looked at my watch; it was 9 minutes after the musicians had sat down, so I nodded, and put my finger to my lips. And in my ears. We were trapped. After 30 more minutes of deconstructive incoherence, shorn of any relationship to the human voice, dance or contemporary soundscapes, they stopped and everybody clapped, out of relief. We left.

The composer John Cage’s best known piece is “4 mins. 52 secs. for solo piano” - the performer sits at the piano for 4 mins 52 secs without playing. Cage wanted the audience to pay attention to ambient sound instead, as if we didn’t anyway. This is patronising and in the context of the open windows of New York - where no birds sing - disappointing. In further pursuit of eccentric celebrity Cage said he preferred the sound of traffic to Beethoven. These are not the only alternatives. Also “I’m saying nothing, and I’m saying it” which transforms all too easily to “I have nothing to say and I’m saying it”. Cage became overly famous, influential and rich by peddling Emptiness, which is either very Zen or more new clothes for the Emperor. Neither way am I convinced. However he is a celebrity and I am not, so as with the CBSO concert I tried to find out whether I was missing something. Cage wrote a lot, even a 276 page book on Silence (!) and so mostly I had to read his compositions instead of listening to them. His overthought pieces are, in performance, made up of sad percussion noises, which are apparently random - but timed and scored, which could be a Zen contradiction. Foley/ sound artists have much more fun
exploiting the delicious potential and perfectable timing of the soundscapes/ sfx they compose for the movies using modern technology.… And then I had … A dream of Cage: My dream life is often a chaotic attempt to sort out the day and then I wake and have to nail the dreams down on paper to stop them going round and round in my head, then I put on Radio 3 to lull me back to sleep. This morning my notebook reads: “5.07am: A posh Radio 3 announcer is speaking: “The first piece we will hear is the world premiere of a hitherto unknown piece by John Cage recently unearthed from his unpublished notebooks. In this exciting orchestral version of his iconic “4 minutes 52” the roles are reversed and it is the turn of the audience to perform - or rather not perform - and for the musicians to sit there in bewildered silence. Cage writes “..... as the orchestra take their seats and prepare to tune up, the audience continue to laugh, blow their noses, argue, cough, murmur, scrabble about in the bottom of their handbags, offer round their nibbles and show off their new ear-rings, etc. ….” Those that have noticed the instructions in their programmes are now carrying them out. People seated in the middle of a row go to the powder room and make everybody else stand up only to return and trip over everybody’s feet, fall in their laps etc. just as the conductor raises his baton, whilst other punters open crisp packets and crimp their plastic water bottles. At “aleatorically determined” (posh for “chance”) intervals the exasperated conductor attempts to get silence by tapping his stick against the music stand, and peers ineffectually over his shoulder into the hall. A smatter of applause dies away. A fight breaks out between audience members who are not aware of what is going on and those who are. After the hallowed 4 mins. 52 seconds is over the musicians are instructed to boo, whistle, stamp their feet, clap ironically and some of them leave. There is a final instruction in the score “NO MUSIC TO BE PLAYED”. The Guardian thought it “Compulsive”, the Daily Mail gave it four stars, as in “.. total ****ing nonsense”, while the audience and orchestra reportedly thought it was just hilarious and performed an impromptu encore, or as others saw it, went in search of a drink.” That was my dream... If you want to interpret new ideas and make new soundscapes, then modern technology, software, instruments like digital recorders, synths, electric guitars, video, Reaper and your own ears would seem appropriate, while - possibly in search of the spontaneity that classical music lacks - the elaborately prepared disassembly of vestigial Classicism with historic instruments made of animal skin, precious metals and wood, even tin cans would seem to be a blind alley. © Hugh Colvin 2022

MEN (15)
Following her abusive husband’s suicide, as part of the healing if not the grieving process, Harper (Jessie Buckley, WILD ROSE, THE COURIER) rents a country mansion owned by the slightly creepy Geoffrey played by Rory Kinnear who, thanks to some convincing make-up and prosthetics, also plays a succession of even spookier types. Needless then to say that although initially relieved to have found some rural peace and quiet, Harper soon becomes unsettled and ultimately downright unhinged by increasingly shocking events which also suggest she had rather more to do with late hubby’s demise than she liked to admit. Writer/director Alex Garland has form with creepy (ANNIHILATION) and visceral violence (the much underrated DREDD) but is best known for his Oscar-nominated EX-MACHINA – varied experiences which he channels to excellent, tensionbuilding effect here, and Buckley yet again proves why she’s such a rising star.

Although we don’t usually do blockbusters at Broad Sheep, please excuse my avowed admiration for Tom Cruise… if only for lower-key roles like the hit-man in Michael Mann’s brilliant COLLATERAL and his struggling sports agent, JERRY MAGUIRE, because whatever his blockbuster bankability, this man can act. And as the titular rebel aviator, Pete Mitchell returning after 30 years to train a new generation of fighter pilots, Cruise fronts an enterprise boasting considerably more cred than most of his wham-bang outings such as the MISSION IMPOSSIBLEs and the frankly barmy KNIGHT & DAY. Working again with director Joseph Kosinski, (in the wistful sci-fi fable, OBLIVION) Cruise’s character has to overcome a vengeful ex-student (Miles Teller), a nay-saying military boss (Ed Harris) and more importantly destroy a secret, heavily defended uranium enrichment plant. Obviously he and the young hot-shots he swiftly trains pull it off, but the aerobatics are truly awesome, the drama high octane and you will not be disappointed.

M
R Pernickety has a perennial weakness for nostalgia, especially as a gastronomic condiment. Ancient memories, he finds, can add strong flavours to current perception. It was therefore with a warm tingle of anticipation that he set off to have Sunday lunch with his Lovely Companion and two old friends in what is now called The Cattle Shed in the grounds of Penrhos Court, near Kington. Mr P last ate in this establishment in 1977 while on a meander from London to Llanelli with, he imprecisely recalls, a beautiful young woman. He too was young then – very young – and, at that point in his life, unused to regulating his alcohol intake, making his memory of the meal they ate, the name of the place, and, sadly, subsequent events as blurred as a Turner seascape. So, other than that of an approximately rustic farm building, full of rowdy people, he had no clear template against which to set his experience of it some forty-five years on. Penrhos Court, of which this eating place is a part, is a II* listed building of allegedly C13th origins although it has been extensively messed around with over the last fifty years, creating a romantic, if now partly bogus-looking cluster of buildings. For a while, it was associated the late M. Python, Terry Jones who funded the creation of a short-lived brewery in one of the beast byres. The whole place had been bought for a reported £5,000 in 1971 by what Mr Pernickety perceived as a somewhat furtive individual who ran it as a small, eccentric hotel and restaurant. In 2015, Penrhos Court was sold since when subsequent owners have created holiday lets in rebuilt barns, evidently furnished with ideas from mid-range aspirational life-style magazines and surrounded by a sea of what Mr P has previously described as ‘geologically inappropriate’ golden Cotswold gravel – a clear sign of aesthetic decisions being taken by those who do not understand their terroir. But the single storey outbuilding in which Mr P first ate all those decades ago, despite periods of closure or inertia, has survived and is currently open for breakfast lunch and tea. They are also advertising plans to open for dinner three evenings a week. Before they do, Mr P suggests that they address a few shortcomings in what they offer, for he and his three companions left after lunch at The Cattle Shed feeling underwhelmed and, for one of them, underfed. Driving into a tidy new carpark, there is a fine view to be had across Kington and the Vale of Arrow to the numinous whale’s back of Hergest Ridge. The simple stone building that houses the restaurant is less attractive.
26
Inside, stone walls have been painted and the roof of wrinkled zinc newly replaced. Scaffold board tables, shouting ‘We are honest, functional and sincere,’ are surrounded by industrial metal French chairs that are so hard on the buttocks that supplementary protective cushions are offered as a matter of course. The potentially pleasing views are denied the diner as the shed is in the wrong place, with no windows to speak of on the north side, which anyway overlooks the A44, and those on the south side offering only a view across the courtyard to the main house (where the restaurant ought to be.) The hard floor provides tricky acoustics, meaning that
deaf old gits like Mr P have to cup their ears simply to hear the person opposite. The Sunday lunch menu is short. For a starter, three of Mr P’s party chose Crispy Hens Egg – a soft boiled egg crusted in Panko crumbs with asparagus, prosciutto ham and truffle hollandaise. They all enjoyed it. Mr P on the other hand didn’t much like his Breaded Mushrooms, with a bland aioli sauce and a few salad leaves. They may have been prepared that morning, but their taste and texture didn’t suggest it. After a longish wait and an absence of cutlery, the main courses were served. Mr Pernickety and his LC had chosen ‘Herefordshire Orchard Reared Pork’ – a fanciful description such as the late Barbara Cartland might have employed. Greige in colour, the meat was overcooked (although the cracking was good) and the spuds that came with it were more crusted mash than roast, as billed. A bowl of other mushy veg, an amorphous squishy Yorkshire pud and a small hard bollock of stuffing didn’t help. One of Mr P’s other companions, inclined to alternativeness, tried the ‘vegan friendly’ Butternut Squash and Beetroot Wellington. She was soon prodding it with grumpy disdain. The pastry was unpleasantly soggy, she said, and the stuffing gooey and not tasty. A side-dish of vegetables was served without any condiment to liven it up – a vegan dressing could have been offered but wasn’t. She had a couple of mouthfuls, made a face and gave up. Sadly, she couldn’t make up for her lack of main course with her choice of pudding – an oversized tump of Apple and Rhubarb Crumble, flumped in a puddle of partially congealed custard, which she rejected. (To be fair, Mr P did enjoy his Tart au Citron.) Afterwards, though, he noted guiltily that her Crispy Hens Egg and a glass of white wine had cost her £30 quarter share of the final bill. Service was delivered by willing, friendly but untrained staff; if Mr P were running a restaurant (at which he knows he would be profoundly inefficient) he would, at least instruct his waiting staff not to say to customers: ‘You guys’, ‘Here you go’, ‘No problem’ (Why should bringing cutlery be a problem?) and, above all, ‘Enjoy!’ which Mr P has mentioned many times before. In this case, the waiting staff were also hampered by a lack of experience in the kitchen, where the ability to achieve a swift turnaround of dishes was manifestly absent, even with the place only half full. It was a disappointment all round, which even a dollop of nostalgia couldn’t help. Mr P feels that he will revisit The Cattle Shed only when he hears that these several shortcomings have been addressed. He hopes he won’t have to wait another forty-five years. Book Review: A Home for all Seasons ‘W
ho lives in that house?’ many tourists must wonder, as they sit with their pints outside the New Inn, Pembridge, looking across at the intriguing red-brick building that occupies an opposite corner of the Market Square, its ground floor frontage curving down towards the main Kington to Leominster Road while its upper floors climb steeply upwards alongside the steps that lead into the grassy sward of St Mary’s Churchyard. Hence its name: Stepps House. Since the summer of 2018 the occupants of that house have been cultural historian Gavin Plumley, his husband Alastair, their cocker spaniel Toby and, more recently, their puppy Nimrod. They found Stepps by happy accident in a search for a bolthole that would enable them to escape for weekends and holidays from Alastair’s demanding job as headmaster of a boarding school in Somerset. Moving from Bedfordshire, they had a few long-standing personal associations with the Marches, mainly on Gavin’s side, but essentially they were incomers to this small, very rural village, unsure of their welcome in a place where many of their neighbours had roots going back generations. A Home for all Seasons tells the story of how Pembridge quickly became home for Gavin, Alastair and their dogs, but it is also the story of their community and how it has both changed and stayed the same over the centuries, told through Gavin’s quest to establish the age of Stepps House in answer to an insurance company’s question. Anyone who owns an old house will know how difficult that can be; many local readers will recognise Gavin’s experience of inviting architectural guru Duncan James to estimate the date of their property, trying in vain to interpret his inscrutable expression as he inspects the joints in timber frames and assesses the direction of ceiling beams. Stepps House is not listed, it has never attracted the attention of county surveyors or building historians; and just as Gavin begins to piece together its story from property deeds and church records the pandemic strikes and the Herefordshire Archive and
Records Centre closes its doors for many months. Yet evidence for how Pembridge might have looked in the past can be found from other sources. A vivid series of paintings by Breugel depicting rural life in the 16th century, familiar to Gavin from his work as a lecturer on the history of art, act as stepping stones in his quest. Vignettes of present-day Pembridge life serve a similar purpose, as Gavin and Alastair cultivate their garden, walk their dog in all weathers, decorate their house for Christmas and make new friends around the fire or the piano in the New Inn. As musicians they relish the association with Vaughan Williams, who visited Pembridge in his search for the traditional folk tunes that found their way into his compositions. Gavin’s tale is full of fascinating digressions and pauses for reflection, for example on his own identity as a gay historian who until very recently would not have been represented in any portrait of a community. There are few precise answers to his questions about Stepps House, but he has written a lyrical and engaging love letter to his family, his friends and to Pembridge.

grass roots Is Failing Atlantic Current Behind Our Dismal Spring?
T
HERE is a feature of our weather that has troubled me in the last few years. It is the failure of springtime to arrive in any convincing way. So concerned have I been that I mounted my own robust scientific study. Over several days in May, I looked out of window. But, usually, I failed to spot anything resembling warm sunshine. In order to reinforce this research, I would step outside the front door sometimes, to see what the air felt like. Usually, it did not feel balmy. It often felt cool, damp and dispiriting. Although there was the occasional patch of sunlight, there was nothing that would make you want to go out and buy a lounger! Or a bottle of Ambre Solaire against sunburn. (Other brands are available.) While lazily googling to see if any experts shared my thoughts, I was shocked to discover that we had endured a miserable spring in north west Europe last year as well. How come I didn’t notice? Maybe I was just cowering indoors, trying not to catch COVID! In my schooldays, I did not put much effort into geography. It seemed mostly to be about wheat in endless swathes of Canada. Or possibly about sheep in equally vast swathes of Australia or New Zealand. Rocks and ice in the Swiss alps also got a mention and, at my school, some of us even signed up for a week-long trip to Switzerland, ostensibly to learn about geology and glaciers. But, instead of examining the ice and rocks, we mostly just spent our time taking ferries across Lake Lucerne, or downing industrial quantities of schnapps. However, today, I do still recall an expression that was drilled into us by our geography teachers. It was “warm wet, westerly winds.” And we were assured that Britain would always benefit from those prevailing winds. They would bring useful rainfall, and, when it wasn’t raining, we would often bask in warm sunshine. We learned also that a benign ocean current, the Gulf Stream, would keep Britain warmish and wettish for ever and a day! Global warming did not get a look-in. But a few decades have gone by, and now the warm wet westerlies seem to be going on the blink. The Gulf Stream seems to be sputtering. Or stalling. Or petering out... Maybe! The trouble is, it takes about a thousand years (or is it a million?) for anything to be quite definite when it comes to weakening ocean currents! I first read the bad news about them a few years into this century. The evidence sounded shaky at first, but by 2005 a team of oceanographers led by Professor Harry Bryden of Southampton University were getting alarmed. Their worries focused on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. It’s known to boffins as the AMOC. Bryden and his team concluded that this system of currents had slowed down by more than 30%, compared with its strength over the previous hundreds of years.
50
Since then, other academic teams have sounded warnings over threats to the warm currents that used to make Britain’s climate so pleasant in spring and summer. One study, published in February this year, used indirect methods to trace changes in the Atlantic circulation all the
way back to 400AD. That is because direct methods, using floating gadgets anchored to the sea floor, began to be available only around 2004. A scientist independent of this year’s study, Dr Andrew Meijers, of the British Antarctic Survey, commented that the researchers had used a wide range of independent sources to assess changes over many centuries, “...and so it is very telling that almost all point to a significant slowdown in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation in the last century.” As I understand it, the Gulf Stream is a current, with several branches, which sends warm water from the Caribbean, sweeping up towards north-west Europe, with Britain sitting happily in its path. Whereas the AMOC is somewhat larger and more diffuse. Britain’s foremost weather watchers, at the Met Office, have added their weight to the debate. This spring, they say, Wales has had only 58% of its normal spring rainfall. In the last three years they have published briefing papers which have only added to my fears. One is entitled “The slowdown or shutdown of AMOC – key regulator of global climate”. The use of that word “shutdown” by such a cautious body is alarming. The Met Office says that although a total shutdown of the AMOC this century is “very unlikely”, it is “still plausible”. Another Met Office paper says that the Atlantic circulation (AMOC) “...plays a crucial role...keeping Europe much warmer than it would be otherwise.” It states that “if (the circulation) slowed or stopped completely, it would have widespread impacts, including substantial cooling of the Northern Hemisphere. There would also be... increases in winter storms over Europe, and sea levels around the North Atlantic basin could rise by up to half a metre more” than is already expected due to global warming. Ouch! We have been warned. But how many of us noticed the warnings? Were we keeping alert and informed? Or were we just staring vacantly out of the window, wondering when the weather was going to perk up a bit and give us a real sunny day for a change? Julian O’Halloran
