IRST off I need to make an apology for last month’s editorial. I got severely ticked off by Dave Colwell for including the Gherkin in my tirade against horrible high risers in the City of London. According to Dave (he knows about these things) the Gherkin is not as horrible as its more thrusting neighbours and when viewed at street level its gherkin shape renders it less imposing and infinitely more cuddly than say the sharp, shaped, Shard. Frankly I doubt if this apology will do much good as I don’t really believe gherkins have very strong feelings and even if they do they certainly don’t read Broad Sheep. Still, while on the subject of aesthetics I must relate the funniest story of the week, which involves my friend and neighbour Ian Marchant and his attempt to become an international art dealer. As Ian relates the story on his Facebook page, having just come into a surprise windfall of 100 quid by swapping his bank account he decided to invest in a bit of art. He spotted an Essex Landscape, he liked the look of, at an online auction in Leominster with a £75 - £100 estimate and he actually went to view the piece. However at the online auction he dropped out of the bidding at £130 and it sold to someone else for £200. Then he made his big mistake. He left the auction running on his browser and when he spotted a picture by Mauro Bonacina with an estimate of £20- £40 he Googled the artist and on discovering he had exhibited at the Saatchi gallery slapped down a bid for £20, fully expecting to be outbid. A couple of days later the enormity of his error was delivered through his small front door. As you can see from this photo Hilary is thinking “How clever of my Ian to spot this artistic masterpiece and bring it into our tiny front room” or possibly not! The happy ending to this tale is that after a lot of fatuous comments from Ian’s Facebook friends an old school friend from Surrey spotted the story, liked the picture and offered to give it a home, as well as using it as an excuse to meet up after 40 years.

Ian is of course a successful writer with a string of great books to his name but another of my friends and one of our gang of four, who staged the Velvet Violin Cabarets and Full Circle events in Presteigne, has suddenly admitted that she is a writer. Yes, Penny Hughes has just published her first book The Black House and its an extraordinary bit of work. I know Penny as a lot of things, farmer, artist, horsewoman, ecologist, bartender, Presteigne pantomime stalwart, the brains behind the newly regenerated High Street Corner Café etc etc but not as a writer. Apparently six years ago, as she tells it, the muse arrived, she picked up a pen, turned off the electric for atmosphere and by the light of a paraffin lamp, over the course of two winters this book wrote itself. The writing process was sheer pleasure but the painful and heartbreaking work transferring it from longhand to a very recalcitrant computer took a very long time, was infuriating and involved a complete re-write when the computer lost the whole book. However, the result is a triumph. Email: info@broadsheep.com Website: www.broadsheep.com
Set in the famously harsh winter of 1947 it tells a vivid tale of a community of small farms on the Border struggling to make ends meet but also involved in the endless feuds, gossip and petty jealousies that are the currency of small, insular communities. Penny has worked on a good few local farms, knows all about these things and coupled with her knowledge of animal husbandry and acute eye for flora and fauna the writing has a vivid and thoroughly convincing authority. She is also quite happy confronting major issues of sexuality and prejudice in fact the story is a gritty, rural page-turner. Although self-published and currently only available from The Workhouse Gallery in Presteigne I’m sure it will quickly find a home in the wider world and a good few people have noticed that it would make a cracking film. I was intrigued to hear that in the same way that I have songs going round in my head all the time (often some crap I just heard in SPAR), Penny has stories constantly going on in her head. I wonder if other people have this blessing/ curse? I can’t wait to find out who will be the next friend to reveal they have been quietly writing the sequel to War and Peace in the garden shed. Gems of the Silver Screen A
RCHITECTURE invariably – though not always – takes a back seat in film production. A rare exception is Powell and Pressburger’s Black Narcissus (1947), filmed entirely at Pinewood though intended to be a Nepalese convent. Deborah Kerr dazzles as the Mother Superior attempting to bring order to a bunch of misfits. But it is the convent’s spooky, labyrinthian structure which dominates the acting. Fast-forwarding seven decades we arrive at Wes Anderson’s quirky and colourful The French Despatch, a delightful melange about an editorial team which produce a monthly Gallic magazine supplement from a six-storey tenement, looking for all the world like a child’s dolls’ house. In the opening sequence, a waiter, laden by a huge tray of drinks, can be seen in long shot ascending a perilous outside staircase, proving that the meticulous director was only content with the real thing. Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars was the wonderfully ingenious Parasite, in which a family of four slum dwellers inveigle their way into the home of a super-rich South Korean family, who live in an all-glass Modernist palace which might have come from the drawing board of Mies van der Rohe. Amazingly, the ‘house’ never existed, but was an elaborate series of glass and plasterboard sound stages which were built, ‘struck’ and remodelled every weekend. Even the living room’s panoramic view of the garden had to be 2.35:1 to exactly accommodate wide screen cinemas. The second collection of funny, erudite, deeply unconventional essays based on its garden, which Sam Llewellyn has made with the hindrance (frequent) and help (occasional) of an itinerant Duchess.

Not quite Sandringham Schloss Nordkirchen near Münster
For the real McCoy, look no further than Ridley Scott’s epic Blade Runner (1982). Whilst the first glimpses of the cgi-created pyramidal headquarters of the Tyrell empire are awesome (with a throbbing soundtrack by Vangelis), it is the timeless Mayan-influenced decoration on the precast concrete walls of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House, the secret lair of a femme-fatale replicant, which never fails to excite. A second architectural landmark – the famous Bradbury Building, with its sinewy wrought iron internal atrium – makes a brief appearance at the end of the movie. Post-Covid, two architectural delights arrived in quick succession (like No 11 buses, you wait years for one to arrive – and then two turn up within a fortnight). Spencer (2021) is a grim fairy tale of a single chapter in the downward spiral of Princess Diana, allegedly set at a Royal Christmas gathering at Sandringham. The proceedings are ‘choreographed’ by a masterful Major Domo, played by a visibly ageing Timothy Spaul. It certainly wasn’t the Royal family’s real Norfolk residence, as filming a Diana biopic there would certainly have been off-limits. So where was this majestic pile conjured up from, since its English architectural details just didn’t look quite right? After scouring most of Europe, the production company’s location scouts came up with Nordkirchen, a baroque schloss south of Münster. Barbara Broccoli’s scouts were also at their most inventive when they found the perfect setting for the best of the three set piece car chases in last year’s latest Bond offering No Time to Die. The spectacular curving Roman causeway - slung across a ravine like a sagging suspension bridge - is at Matera in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. The movie’s balletic auto choreography is simply breath-taking and is said to have been achieved in a single week, involving 10 Aston Martins and a production crew of 400. The local Mayor is predicting that No Time to Die could attract a tourism income for this tiny mediaeval hill town of €12M. Nick Jones

BORDERLINES FILM FESTIVAL FRIDAY 4 - SUNDAY 20 MARCH Each year the Borderlines Film Festival, the largest rural film festival in the UK, centred on The Courtyard, Hereford, but also spread across numerous venues in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys and online. Details www.borderlinesfilmfestival.org
COURTYARD, HEREFORD 2022 is surely Kenneth Branagh’s year, what with the critical acclaim of his loosely biographical BELFAST and now the much Covid-delayed release of his second Agatha Christie re-make? His first, 2017’s MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS was a lavish, star-studded, box-office smasher and he repeats the formula here, using the same scripter, Michael Green, and himself playing Hercule Poirot’s monstrously mustachioed detective. However unlike John (TOWERING INFERNO) Guillermin’s excellent 1978 version, this film diverts from its predecessor by sketching in Poirot’s back-story and adding characters that Christie might’ve sniffed at. Thus we have cameos from Annette Bening, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Russell Brand etc. spicing up a familiar Christie plot – namely closely confined characters getting bumped off by a murderer eventually unmasked by Poirot – with Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Sophie Okonedo and Tom Bateman resplendent in the major roles in this terrifically entertaining romp. LAMB (15)
My top film so far this year is probably the weirdest, although not perhaps to fans of Icelandic cinema which is also known for strong animalistic themes set against that country’s ruggedly impressive landscapes, e.g. OF HORSES AND MEN, and 2015’s Cannes-winning RAMS. No surprise then that the star of Valdimar Johannsson’s debut feature is a young sheep… sort of. And in the first of several monstrous plot twists, although born on the remote farm run by Ingvar (Hilmar Snaer Gudnason) and Maria (Noomi Rapace, GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), the beast soon exhibits disturbing characteristics which its parents take to their bosom, Maria especially. And then along comes Ingvar’s broke, belligerent brother (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson) to disrupt this strange, touching, fragile relationship which gradually becomes downright distressing and ultimately, violent. Johannsson cleverly combines CGI, trained animals, intuitive performances and atmospheric sound design to great dramatic effect that will knock your heavy-knit socks off. 4 March THE COURIER (12A) Simpson Hall, Burghill 07726 148736 4 March MOTHERING SUNDAY (15) Cawley Hall, Eye 01568 615836 4 March THE COURIER (12A) Garway VH 01600 750243 4 March I AM BELMAYA (12A) Knighton Community Centre 01547 520602 5 March PIG (15) Bedstone & Hopton Castle VH 01547 530282 5 March AZOR (12A) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-on-Wye 07789 778048 5 March THE COURIER(12A) Lady Emily Hall, Tarrington 01432 890720 5 March ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (12) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 6 March UNTOUCHABLE (15) Pembridge Film Nights 01544 387571 6 March SOUAD (12A) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 6 March THE ALPINIST (12A) Conquest Theatre, Bromyard 01885 488575 7 March NOMADLAND (12A) Coalbrookdale & Ironbridge Community Centre 01952 433297 7 March MILITARY WIVES (12A) The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock 01952 728911 8 March PILI (12A) All Stretton VH 07812 583113 8 March MINARI (12) St Mary’s Church Hall, Ross on Wye 07789 778048 8 March MOTHERING SUNDAY (15) Much Birch Community Hall 01584 831574

PARALLEL MOTHERS (15)
Writer/director Pedro Almadóvar’s sensitive, wholehearted embrace of women in his filmmaking has never been bettered than here in PARALLEL MOTHERS, neither has the performance of one of his regular stars, Penélope Cruz who pulls out all the stops as photographer Janice who falls pregnant with her married lover, Arturo and opts to have the baby anyway. In the maternity hospital she meets and instantly forms a bond with teenager Ana (amazing newcomer, Milena Smit) and thenceforth these two single mothers embark on an interdependent relationship – odyssey even – that is brimful of love, mutual support and challenged trust much of it reflected in the relationships each woman has with what becomes an extended family including Ana’s ambitious actress mother and Janice’s steadfast agent. With his typically lavish palette, Antxon Gómez’ reliably rich production design and his female repertory regulars this is arguably Almadóvar’s best work since 2006’s VOLVER.

food page The Blue Boar, Hay-on-Wye
M
R Pernickety last ate in the Blue Boar in Hay-on-Wye over a decade ago, while assembling his Guide to Eating in that town. To provide some context he reproduces below extracts of his 2009 review. The Blue Boar is a popular place, and it was crowded when Mr Pernickety ate there on a busy Saturday Hallowe’en. He and his lovely companion arrived at nine o’clock after witnessing the annual Hay-on-Fire festival. They had processed behind fire dancers and drummers a good-ish distance down to the banks of the Wye where, to the accompaniment of an a cappella choir singing the Beatles’ ‘Money’, a wooden effigy of a bushy-browed man, not unlike former Chancellor, Dennis Healey, was burned. It seems unlikely that even the politically woolly folk of Hay could re-ally believe old Dennis was to blame for the international banking debacle of the previous year, so perhaps it was simply a local manifestation of the Green Man. In any event, in an uplifted mood, Mr Pernickety stumbled into the pub and was directed to a raised eating area – not especially attractive – with hard little bentwood and ply chairs. Mr P and his companion observed gloomily that things didn’t look promising, made worse (in Mr P’s view) by having to pay £3.50 for a pint of Tim Taylor’s bitter. Mr P and the LC agreed to share a starter – Moules Marinieres, always a reliable test of a kitchen’s bona fides. A bowl of them arrived promptly, and to Mr P’s surprised relief (given the bedlam that the pub had become), they were delicious, with a good wine sauce and, to mop it up, a basket of crusty garlic bread, quickly replenished when requested. Mr P chose to follow this with a Steak and Kidney Pie – conscious that many eateries produce this dish using factory pastry, soggy steak and no kidney to speak of. Not at the Blue Boar, thank goodness. Pastry was clearly home-made, and filled with big solid chunks of S and succulent roundels of K – as good an S&KP as any Mr Pernickety has had. Mr P’s guest, who had been flagging a little after the pagan pyrotechnics by the riverside, chose duck breast with a plum sauce, which she said, smiling with contagious satisfaction, was delicious, tender and a clever combination. The Blue Boar isn’t a ‘gastro’ pub, but it is one of the better places to eat in Hay, and, despite its beer prices, possesses the added bonus of a cheerful atmosphere and a fulsome log fire. Mr P will be visiting again.
24
Mr P has visited the pub several times since, although, as it happens, seldom to eat. However, he had failed to notice a gradual decline in its appeal and he was anticipating a decent lunch in what he recalled as being an old-fashioned and enjoyably cluttered bar. Arriving there, he found that the place has been spruced up somewhat over the years, no doubt to cater for the free-spending cosmopolitan types that the various festivals and the book town’s persona attract. The same slightly second-rate
vintage furniture is still in place, but the prices on the menu seemed to be as unjustifiably inflated as our current Prime Minister’s ego. It immediately occurred to Mr Pernickety that the place had developed ideas way above its station, crassly compounded by errors on the menu: ‘choritzo’ for chorizo; ‘portabelo’ for Portobello, ‘confi’ for confit, ‘taragon’ for tarragon, ‘jalepe-nos’ for jalapenos (3 times) and ‘nachoes’ for nachos. The Woolly Organ reader might view these critiques as examples of excessive pedantry, of Mr Pernickety being even more anal than usual. But he would contend that this gross lack of attention in describing the food might presage a similar carelessness in its preparation. The luncheon which followed entirely justified his misgivings. While the LC was reasonably content with her vegetarian grilled Hallumi (for halloumi) burger and ‘portabelo’ mushrooms, served with satisfactory chips and an indifferent coleslaw, at £16, it might have been served by Dick Turpin’s apprentice. But the Cassoulet with which Mr P was presented was so inferior to any other version of the dish Mr P had previously experienced or, indeed, prepared himself that, at £24, it might have been delivered by the old highwayman himself – in broad daylight. His first impression of the Blue Boar cassoulet was of a pale beige mush, topped with a wrinkled fowl’s limb whose patina, had it been on the leg of an oak country Chippendale chair would have been pleasing and appropriate, but on that of a duck was just the opposite. Other traditional ingredients were either absent or inferior. The Toulouse sausage was bland, the belly pork had the characteristics of chicken flesh, only two flageolet beans and a stray butter bean represented the pulses. It was travesty of a cassoulet and over-priced to the point of absurdity, like the price of a pint of Tim Taylors (imported all the way from Yorkshire) at £4.70. The Blue Boar has manifestly mislaid whatever plot it might once have had and Mr P suspects that very few of Hay’s inhabitants use it any more; he certainly won’t. grass roots Carbon Capture - Not a Magic Climate Fix
I
T already seems a long time ago. But at the November Climate summit in Glasgow, more than 150 countries pledged to try to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius since the start of the industrial era. Easy to make big promises! But much harder to deliver. Even Britain, which has arguably been in the vanguard of those countries cutting greenhouse gas emissions, will face a massive challenge to fulfil its climate pledges. One of the biggest problems I can see is the huge reliance being placed on carbon capture and storage. All kinds of bodies are in the habit of telling us that carbon capture and storage is crucial to delivering deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Many companies wear their commitment to carbon capture as a badge of respectability. It’s my guess that most of them see it as a purely technical fix that can be left to a few scientists to carry out. But I doubt if more than a handful of the bodies involved have made a realistic, hard-headed appraisal of how it would work, and what chance it has of success. If they did, they might get a shock! Supposing this technical fix turns out to be problematic? If that proved to be the case, then, in my view, the whole scenario on which the UK’s Net Zero pledge is based would begin to unravel. While I was chewing this over, I found a report based on an academic paper which seemed to offer encouraging news. It said that carbon capture and storage technology “...now exists and operates routinely at industrial scale, safely capturing millions of tonnes of CO2 every year.” The report quoted several Edinburgh based academics who sounded well qualified. One of them is Professor Stuart Haszeldine, of Edinburgh University, director of SCCS – Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage. Around eight or ten years ago, I discussed with him the question of where, around Britain, carbon captured from industrial processes could be sequestered, or stored. Prof Haszeldine was at that time advocating the use of the Rough gas storage facility, deep under the North Sea, as a good place to store captured carbon. But the owner of Rough, Centrica, decided in 2017 to abandon it, in the light of a government decision to end its subsidy of the gas storage site, worth £75 million a year. Incidentally, the Rough facility might be extremely welcome to ministers now for storing gas, at a time when the government, and consumers, will soon be counting the cost of soaring wholesale gas prices, and lack of gas storage, not in the tens of millions, but in the billions, or tens of billions, of pounds.
46
Prof Haszeldine, and the other academics referred to above, are no doubt experts in their field, but each of them is linked to an institute whose overt mission is to support, encourage, and help develop, carbon capture and storage, or CCS for short. What I wanted to know was whether independent energy and economics experts are
Carbon capture plant in Texas, now closed
equally confident about the potential of carbon capture. If you scratch the surface of the literature on carbon capture, and put on one side those scientists who may have a stake, however tenuous, in its development, you quickly begin to discern a worrying picture. While skating around those bodies with a direct interest in carbon capture, I quickly found a study published by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis – a US based think tank. Its report is headlined - “Holy Grail of carbon capture continues to elude coal industry – cautionary tale applies to domestic and foreign projects alike.” The document asserted, “There isn’t one example of a CCS project anywhere in the world that offers a financial justification for investing in CCS.” The report amounted to a bucket of cold water poured over carbon capture, and its failure to take off over the last decade and a half. The study was headed, “Carbon Capture and Storage is about Reputation, not Economics.” During last year, when President Biden was unveiling his policies to overhaul the USA’s infrastructure, including investment in carbon capture, hundreds of environmental groups and other bodies wrote a joint letter to him urging the federal government to steer well clear of CCS. They said “Carbon capture schemes are unnecessary, ineffective, exceptionally risky and at odds with... environmental justice.” And they labelled carbon capture as a “dangerous distraction.” There is no existing carbon capture project in the UK. And out of just four substantial CCS projects begun in North America in the last ten years, none has shown any signs of real success. Several have run into the sand. Worldwide, almost four out of five carbon sequestration schemes have been aimed at Enhanced Oil Recovery – that is to say, maximising the return from existing fossil fuel assets. What is most puzzling is that the UK government is setting such great store by CCS. The most obvious conclusion must be that, without it, the sums behind the Net Zero strategy just don’t add up.
