What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

Broad Borders T

HE Scottish vote is tomorrow and I’ve got to go to the press today so I don’t know the result, but what happens if Wales is next? I live on the border and have done ever since the car broke down in Hay-on-Wye 40 odd years ago, but I’d be hard put to say which side of the border I’ve been on. It wiggles around like a nest of vipers.I do know, at present I live in England and can cross the border about 20 times a day to get to the Broad Sheep offices, the shops, the pub, the garage, etc etc. You get the idea. So what happens if Wales goes indie? Do I have to decide which country I’m going to publish Broad Sheep in? Do I have to go through passport control every time I want to buy a pint of milk? In my experience border areas are often the most interesting bits of a country, but I’m well aware of the trouble they can cause and I think that nationalism, alongside organised religion, is one of the world’s most alarming and destructive traits. Now I’m not Einstein but it has occured to me that if all the countries in the world think their country is the best, well they can’t all be right. In fact logic dictates that 189 of the 190 are wrong! That’s an awful lot of misplaced nationalism and indicates a lot of proud, puff-chested national anthems that are in need of quick rewrite. Ditto religion. “Wake up chaps, you can’t all have the one true religion”. It stands to reason at most only one of you can have got it right, although I suspect that doesn’t stop people all over the world fighting each other at the drop of the hat in order to prove their dubious set of beliefs is the right one and their neighbours are all wrong. Even more alarming are the religious nuts who manage to pick a fight with the people next door who are of the same religion but a different sect. Yes, I’m talking to you Protestants and Catholics, Sunnis and Shias. The poor old world has got lots of big problems to deal with like water shortages, over population, climate change and the massive gap between rich and poor. I don’t think either nationalism of the worlds big religions are doing anything to help matters and so it falls to me to provide solutions and the philosophical basis on which we can confront these problems. So welcome to my new hardline political party, BROAD BORDERS. 1. From now on all the world’s citizens will have to have two nationalities: one dictated by where they are born and the other operating a bit like the town twinning scheme. You have to work out which place you are exactly opposite (and furthest away) to on the globe and then adopt the nationality of that place along with your own. In my case it’s the Antipodean Islands that are directly opposite via the centre of the earth and here is a picture of the house and my new best friend - the bloke who lives in it. If you were to live in, say Buenos Aries, it might be Mashad in Iran (bad luck all you tango dancers) or if it was the United Arab Emirates it would be Paraguay. Anyway

Pete’s hut in The Antipodean Islands

you get the idea, if you adopt the nationality of the place furthest away from you in the world it makes it a lot less likely you’ll be picking a fight with the country next door. That’s got rid of the wars, so now what has BROAD BORDERS got to say about the rich/poor divide and climate change. 2. I’ve already admitted to the ‘not being Einstein’ thing, but the way I see it, it’s nationalism and thrusting capitalism that seems to be the problem here. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and what we need is not to be increasing our GDP, upping production, making ourselves more prosperous and successful. We need to do the opposite. So BB says “Calm Down”. Stop racing around in your Audi 4 x 4 and grow some vegetables. Have a day off, stop being so thrusting. Get yourself a bicycle and ride to Aberystwyth. Me - I’m off to my hut in the Antipodean Islands. ‘Go Anchorage Bay United, Go’. 3. Religion - I believe we are all of the same genus, along with our more hairy friends, so not only did monkeys write the Bible, they also invented the typewriter.

Fig-Leaves in Eden “G

6

enesis” was an exhibition of photographs of unspoilt landscapes, wildlife and remote communities at the Natural History Museum, London by the photographer Sebastiao Salgado, sponsored by Vale, the Brazilian mining corporation. It was awarded the 2012 Public Eye award for having the most “contempt for the environment and human rights” by the Berne Declaration and Greenpeace Switzerland. Wild-life documentaries are part of the staple diet of TV, and coffee table books evoke the wonders of nature. Their sub-texts serve up variations on a linked set of old ideas, new minted for our times. They are shot in the Wilderness or Arcadia or Eden or Paradise, sometimes in the company of the Noble Savage/ Adam and Eve, and sometimes with the Climate Apocalypse/ Last Days pending and – at its best - the Abbot of the Eco-sphere David Attenborgia intoning the Mea Culpa. They are updated versions of the casting out from the Garden of Eden through the acquisition of knowledge and of the loss of our original childhood and ancestral hunter-gatherer habitat, and our impotence in the face of mass civilisation and the power of our own greed. This up-dating has had the curious effect of relocating the aboriginal playground of childhood to primeval wilderness landscapes outside the Gates of Eden, in the very opposite of a paradise garden. The book, exhibition or programme will be a study of the waning of the Aboriginal Dream-time or the melting Arctic or the destruction of the rainforest or the sea-bed, any virgin territory where vicariously exciting physical adventure is still possible and where the Devil (in the shape of Kapital, technology, our own democratic greed etc.) is tempting us to destroy the innocent untouchable past and to bring down the wrath of Mother Nature, God or Gaia on our heads in a postponed but morally necessary and narratively satisfying Day of Judgement. The visual experience is a feast for the eyes; the roving camera’s eye organises what we see, and an authoritative voice-over tells us what to think, while in place of the dissonant and unpredictable natural soundscape a classical ensemble orchestrates our emotions from somewhere in the bushes. Anthropomorphic animals or native peoples animate the scenery on our behalf, and give it scale, like the jolly peasant figures/ nudes posed in traditional lordly landscape paintings. An essential part of the enjoyment is that we can watch someone else’s native paradise ebbing away from the vantage point of our armchair, through the eyes of the hotshot hunter/ cameraman, kitted out in the latest extreme sports survival gear, who stalks satisfyingly high value endangered species/ tribes in a boys’ own adventure holiday location, substituting the camera’s eye for our bow and arrow, or rifle. The “Genesis” show is not a new trick. As Richard Hayman says of The Last of the Mohicans (1826) “For the urban readership ... [Fenimore Cooper’s] novel ... provided a self-serving emotional release to a society with a voracious appetite for cleared land”. Meanwhile

Thoreau’s experimental retreat into mystical wilderness self-sufficiency was conducted within easy walking distance of all the amenities of the town of Concord. None of our media experiences are mitigated or informed by any feeling of physical unease or measurable personal loss. We buy the 24/7 on-demand flat-screen substitute while allowing the original to be destroyed by our proxies. We do not lift a finger except to hit the remote. It is the same as watching sport from the sofa. The only legacy of the Olympics/ World Cup is that we watch more sport and eat more pop-corn. We dont participate, we make no effort, the experience is transient and the message disposable. It is the very opposite of being present in any of these physically and morally demanding, sensually powerful reminders of childhood and lost man/ womanhood; nor can you regain them by dallying through the travel supplements on a Sunday morning or an apologetic donation to Greenpeace. We wallow in a warm bath of nostalgia and transference, scented with the spice of guilt, savouring our moral impotence in bloated comfort. We wish for a set of raw origins in childhood and history that we can no longer retrieve. Andy Goldsworthy’s coffee table art relies on the same trick – here I am, the Artist, all alone, with my twigs and pieces of ice and stone. Here I am all by myself in the middle of some nostalgic landscape, just me and my camera and a world-wide publishing operation. Ragnar Axelsson’s harsh TV documentary of the Last Days of the Arctic, uncompromisingly made with black and white stills and a minimal sound-track, avoids the cliches of glib presentation, glamour, grandeur and sensuality; but even he cannot negate the effect of the medium, of second-hand experience. It is the fact of the representation of nature as home-delivered imagery to which the viewers make no contribution except the flickering of their eyeballs that renders the experience and the message utterly disposable. TV is the opiate of the people. As the forgotten pretelevisual philosopher Laurence Hyde wrote “We are in danger of becoming a society of under-individualised people sharing inferior experience” – a prescient definition of the flat screen, the X factor, Big Brother, Danish TV etc.. Sebastiao Salgado, Andy Goldsworthy, David Attenborough, Ragnar Axelsson and their co-scientists, artists and technicians are supreme masters of their craft, and have devoted their lives to raising our consciousness, recording the diversity and beauty of the eco-sphere and warning of the threats to its future; Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth et al. almost owe their existence to their work but however moral the intended message, however scientific the information or beautiful the image, the substitution of the selected brief armchair footage of a distant unattainable Eden for the unpredictable personal involvement in the inescapable, everyday here and now in mud, drizzle, hail, wind and snow is alienating, de-moralising and an admission of defeat. By the nature of the mass medium it is also almost unavoidably a lullaby when it should be a furious dirge. Hugh Colvin (c) 2014

PRIDE (15) 1984, and the miners’ strike is causing great hardship in one remote Welsh pit village. A group of young gay activists led by bolshy Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) decide to raise money for them, but having travelled down to deliver the funds, they’re unprepared for the homophobia that greets them. However it transpires that a taciturn village elder (Bill Nighy, in immaculate Welsh brogue) has long been in the closet and the strikers’ wives, headed by Imelda Staunton’s no-nonsense Helfina, are both grateful and curious, and eventually they’re dancing up a storm with their unlikely saviours. In only his second film, theatre director Marcus Warchus expertly finesses knowing humour, righteous anger and sexual politicking with pitch-perfect performances.

A MOST WANTED MAN (15) In director Anton Corbijn’s appropriately shadowy adaptation of John Le Carre’s post-9/11 espionage t h r i l l e r, P h i l i p S e y m o u r Hoffman plays the head of Hamburg’s secret antiterrorist unit who co-opts a reluctant Chechen refugee to help catch a suspected jihadist mastermind. Unfortunately his painstakingly subtle approach is threatened by a CIA agent (Robin Wright) keen to accelerate the chase, a liberal lawyer (Rachel McAdams) and a shady banker (Willem Dafoe). With perfectly calibrated plot twists courtesy of LANTANA screenwriter Andrew Bovell executed in typically muted style by Corbijn (THE AMERICAN), this is a great ensemble piece with characters rather than individual actors driving the action, although Hoffman deserves credit for some heroic smoking, drinking and gruff, world-weary cunning.

THE 100-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT OF A WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED (15) Director/writer Felix Herngren’s second feature advances a vogue for dark Scandinavian comedy t y p i f i e d b y 2 0 11 ’ s HEADHUNTERS. Opening as described on the tin, it quickly becomes a rapid-fire succession of chance and often excruciatingly absurd encounters interlaced with bizarre, ZELIG-like flashbacks. Allan Karlsson, played with subtle relish by the distinguished Robert Gustafsson, bumbles his way from a nursing home into a seedy criminal netherworld, with a deliciously typecast Alan Ford (LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) as an enraged villain determined to recover the loot Karlsson has inadvertently appropriated… and a morally resolute elephant. Whilst avoiding comedy clichés, Herngren’s film is consistently amusing yet with an underlying tension and real affection for its characters. Ludlow Food Festival

L

UDLOW over the centuries has taken the lead in many fields of human endeavour, especially as they relate to the Marches – the borderland between Celt & Anglo-Saxon where myths and legends abound, in which several romantic old cranks still believe the Arthurian Realm of Camelot was set. Certainly Ludlow had one of the biggest and best castles on the Marches, which contained some of the nation’s first non-flushing loos; Milton’s Comus had its first production there in 1634, and within its curtilage, one of Britain’s first regular Shakespearean festivals was born in 1960, and in 1995 the nation’s first food festival was launched. Since these auspicious firsts, King Arthur has sunk, more or less without trace, flushing loos have taken over everywhere, Comus has been produced all over the world, one-off Shakespeare productions are to be found in cities and boroughs all over the land, while Ludlow’s own Shakespeare festival, as it was originally conceived, has withered and died from a lack of fresh ideas. The Food Festival, at least, is still going on, and by the look of it this weekend, still attracting big crowds, but this event too is likely to be, perhaps already has been, eclipsed and overtaken in popularity and visitor numbers by another castle borough down the Marches in Abergavenny, and it is strong competition in these endeavours that can sound death-knells. As a long time supporter of Ludlow’s event, Mr Pernickety would be more than sad to see it decline, like the Arts Festival, through a lack of new vision and the inability of the organisers to see the food festival in the wider, more sophisticated context that exists around food in Britain today. The Abergavenny Food Festival, five years younger, fresh, fun, engaging the whole town and, above all, festive, already attracts more punters and far more media attention. The organisers of the Ludlow event would do well to think much more creatively and adventurously if they wish their event to develop and prosper. Having said that, however, Mr P is delighted to report that he enjoyed very much his stroll around the castle on the Sunday of this year’s event. Arriving with his very old friend, wrinkle-rocker and former chef, to the accompaniment of the bells of St Laurence’s, Mr P looked in at the Harp Lane Deli, which is becoming a regular stop – eclectic and good value – and walked on through a good selection of food traders out in the market square. In front

24

of the castle gates was the first of the fairly lack-lustre musical offerings of the day. To the strains of Eastern European folk music, an entertainment was being staged that led Mr P and his VOF to conclude that stoutish ladies in spectacles and uncovered midriffs are not best suited to the art of the belly dance. Inside the castle, Mr P found that the lay-out has been improved and the place felt less crammed than in former years, with more sense of space, and well-sited eating and sitting places, inside the marquees and out. The standard of produce has inevitably improved over the twenty years since the Ludlow Food Festival began, in line with the huge national proliferation of specialist and niche food companies. The festival was originally conceived as a showcase for local producers, but Mr P feels there’s now a case for broadening the geographical footprint. For the festival to hang on to its national pre-eminence, quality should be as important as geography, or it will tend to become little more than a local farmers’ market with an entrance fee. That hasn’t happened yet, but Mr P sees it is a danger to be wary of. There were plenty of taste treats and unusual products to try and to buy across a wide spectrum of food and drink. Mr P tried and particularly enjoyed Oliver’s At the Hop, a bitter-sweet cider infused with dry hops; Teme Valley Brewery’s The Hop Nouvelle, made from green hops; Granny Tig’s special New Zealand Dressing; Brock Hall Farm goats’ cheese and TootSweet artisan chocolates (purchased for Mr P’s Lovely Companion, left to oversee her own emporium). The excellent Hobson’s brewery has extended its activities to making cider, branded Oldfields Orchard – and offering what is described as ‘cider like Prosecco’, produced with sweet Discovery eating apples – enough to make a gnarly old apple crusher from the Black Mountains start chewing his ginger beard, but, in fact, a refreshing aperitif which may appeal to those who have yet to discover the joys of Marcher country cider. This was followed by a chat with Ludlow Vineyard, the Marches’ only licensed producer of what Mr P always thinks of as Calvados, his most favourite spirit. In this part of world, it goes by the uninspiring rustic name of ‘applejack’. The EU certainly won’t allow it to be called Calvados, or even cider brandy; it has to be known as cider spirit. Mr P is working on a new name for it, and hopes to see this delightful drink being properly aged (and named) at some point in the future. The aromas emanating from The Olive Press of Ludlow wafted Mr Pernickety happily to the shores of the Mediterranean with their delicious Kalamata Olive Oil. Foreign aromas drifted too from the stand of the French Flavour Company, where Mr P bought a rope of smoked garlic, whose presence will be strongly manifest in his

kitchen until the very last clove has been used. He also bought from them a fine, moist saucisson de porc et lapin. Mr Pernickety, who feels it is never too late to learn, also enjoyed some of the cooking demonstrations, in particular that given by Chris Burt of the innovative Japanese-style ramen noodle restaurant, Momo No Ki in Shrewsbury, which Mr P will review soon. Mr Pernickety had a great day, but regretted that the festival wasn’t spread more widely through the town. Of course, the sausage, ale and bread trails are popular, but ‘popular’ doesn’t always mean ‘good’, and the organisers might bite the bullet, dispense with these and offer something more interesting and enjoyable than queuing for hours in a cloud of sausage smoke. The street food event, for instance, that was put on a few years ago was a good idea that was never allowed to develop. In Abergavenny there are five sites, evening events, pop up restaurants, street entertainment, debates, ticketed events in the theatre with major culinary personalities, Radio 4’s Kitchen Cabinet and Saturday Live, children’s food events and grown up music. It would be good to see Ludlow offering a few good fresh ideas too next year. Mr Pernickety, www.misterpernickety.com email: info@misterpernickety.com Twitter: mpernickety
