ES ladies and gentlemen, it’s the awards season again and we are lucky enough to be here on the red carpet at the 21st Golden Sheep awards held here at the fabulous Presteigne Memorial Hall. All the stars are out in their Sunday best, here to help celebrate East Powys’ most prestigious ceremony. And here comes the magazine’s illustrious editor, Pete, wearing a rather stained pair of black corduroys and a zip-up cycling jacket. Oh dear, he really could of made a bit more of an effort, but never mind, let’s get inside and find out who this year’s lucky winners are. Best Pothole in Herefordshire The hole in question looked like costing me £300 for a new aluminium wheel on the Mercedes, but luckily with my legendary ability to pick up a bargain on eBay, I managed to scam one for £55+p.p. And the award goes to.... the effing great hole just past Kington Building Supplies on the Kington - Presteigne road; it’s on a corner and if something is coming the other way there is no possible chance of avoiding it. Most Unexpected Meal of the Year On my October Broad Sheep delivery round, I decided to forsake the very dependable All Saints Cafe Hereford and treat myself to lunch at La Madeleine. It turned out to be full, so I wandered back down Church Street and spotting the Moka Bar, thought I’d to take a chance. I sat down, ordered the lunchtime special and spread out The Guardian on the table in front of me. A good 20 minutes passed before the waitress showed up to inform me the gas stove was on the blink and my meal was only half cooked. Another 10 minutes passed and I was just about to get up and tell them I’d run out of time, when the most surprising plate of food appeared. It consisted of a curried potato cake, packed with spices and finely diced vegetables on top of a bed of proper iron-tasting spinach with a poached egg and the whole thing covered in a mango and cream sauce. It may sound very weird but I kid you not, it was the most delicious thing I’d tasted in months. Best Electric Bike Ride in the Broad Sheep Geographical Area As you no doubt know I have a long-term plan to go down every little lane in the Broad Sheep area and at some point last autumn, I realised, I’d never actually bothered to go to Hope-under-Dinmore. So, one sunny afternoon, I braved the horrors of the A49, hopped off the main road at the bottom of the hill and cruised into the village, only to be told very firmly by countless signs that the road out of Hope was a dead-end, going nowhere. Ignoring the signs I pedalled up the hill, vaguely in the direction of Canon Pyon. The road went On and on and up in such determined fashion, that I couldn’t believe it was going nowhere, however, after a couple of miles the tarmac ran out, but Small Ads 4 an open gate led into a field covered in tyre tracks. It seemed like an invitation and Hugh’s Bit 6 indeed a short hop over the field led to another open gate and a track leading down Letters & Poems 7 to Westhope. Yes folks I had discovered the fabled South West Leominster passage. Art 8 Only don’t tell anyone about it or the locals will shut the gate. Book of the Year from Presteigne LIbrary Art workshops 11 “Daughter of the Desert - The Remarkable Life of Gertrude Bell” by Georgina Howell. Cinema 18 Yes, it sure is a remarkable life between the beginning of the First World War and the Dance 20 mid 1920’s Gertrude, a single, unmarried woman become a pivotal player in the very male dominated (English politicians and Arab sheikhs) world of Middle East politics. Food 22 She became such an authority on the tribes and geography of the area that she was Music 24 the expert they all turned to in drawing up the arbitrary boundaries that defined Iraq, Music workshops 33 Syria, Jordan and Palestine and such a confidant of the local tribal leaders that she Venues 35 was the prime mover in making her friend Faisel the first King of Iraq. On top of that, she was best buddies with Laurence of Arabia and if there is one defining photo of her Band directory 36 it’s sitting on a camel between Laurence and Winston Churchill in front of the Pyramids Theatre 38 in 1921. Then, as today, Britain was making a right bloody mess of Iraq and Syria Word 42 and it is heartbreaking how little we learn from these comparitively recent historical Green pages 46 precedents. Incidently as soon as I read this book I thought ‘blimey that would make a good film’ and made a mental note to tell my only screenwriting aquaintance she Comp therapies 48 should get on and write a script quick for Gerty The Movie. Imagine my dismay today We take no when I googled her name and discovered Werner Herzog is already shooting “Queen responsibility for of the Desert” with Nicole Kidman in the leading role - late again! the veracity of the Cultural Highlights information herein At the beginning of last year a friend recommended a band he’d seen at The Vaults in Bishop’s Castle called the Black Rapids. The band, based around Ironbridge, have Pete Mustill become one of my favourites. They play a mix of original material and covers with a Mayfield, Stapleton, sort of brooding menace that manages to combine the dark side of Johnny Cash with Nr Presteigne, Powys LD8 2LW the rock ‘n’ roll passion of early Elvis. Highly Commended. Tel: 01544 260051 One of the most inspiring gigs last year was the Linton Festival held in the field Email: info@broadsheep.com behind the Alma Inn, just outside Ross-on-Wye. It was a very simple recipe: good Website: www.broadsheep.com bar, a couple of good food outlets, a few straw bales to sit on and a succession of good bands on a single stage. What else do you need?

ROSE by any other name would smell as sweet.” Romeo & Juliet. II:2 “..we suppose that all she knows is that a rose is a rose is a rose” Gertrude Stein “La Vie en Rose” Edith Piaf. Music – not the stuff they play sitting down in concert halls where you can only see swathes of black suits and dresses, music stands, and the tips of violin bows pushing up and down with excitement, plus the occasional hint of cleavage and the conductor’s plush little bottom twerking around behind his 19th C. coat-tails – no! I mean up-front music where you can see the players and their glinting horns and axes and the unchained parts of their bodies wiggling about while the audience boogies, stage-dives and whistles – I mean down-home musicians from bluegrass to salsa and folk to flamenco, who deal more openly with sex than the classical players in their suspect hierarchical set-ups are ever going to admit to, even when forced to in court , not that musicians from the wrong side of the tracks are any less dodgy. However even pop lyricists sometimes have to tone down the references. I give you “Slow Hand” by the Pointer sisters, Georgia White’s “Pigmeat”, “My neck, my back (Lick it)” by Khia, “My boy Lollipop” from Millie or Ruth Brown’s splendid but little known song about a chair “If I can’t sell it, I’ll sit on it” - (see Your Tube), and finally amongst a million others Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “You can squeeze my lemon ‘til the juice run down my leg – you know what I’m talking about, baby.” Hands up - or should that be off? - anybody who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Here are two more tracks to listen to, for the truth is more deeply buried in some double entendres than others. Item: The Girl from Ipanema – get in the mood; tune into the original, first , best Getz / Gilberto version. Here to remind you are the ineffable words so sexily whispersung by Astrud G and all her imitators since, from Sinatra to Sandy Shaw, even to Mike Tyson. “Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes, each one she passes goes – aah” Now thats perfect isn’t it? the very image in music of beauty and sexual promise; the male mind defaults to a fragrant picture of a scantily clad, mixed race Brazilian aphrodite in full bloom, sauntering along the beachfront of a slim isthmus of silvery sand just a couple of miles south of the Copa Cabana, flip-flopping and hip-hopping beside the Ipanema Lagoon. Idyllic Ipanema - to one side the sea, and on the other the lagoon. Sublime! Oink! Oink! I checked it out. In the language of the “Tupi” people, the aboriginal inhabitants, upaba means lake and nem means stink, so Ipanema = “Smelly Lake”. Rerun the lyric : “Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Smelly Lake goes walking, And when she passes, each one she passes goes – phuewaagh” – hold your nose through the last bar. Euphemistic titles No. 2 is Sidney Bechet’s most famous creation “Petite Fleur”, which is the only soprano sax instrumental ever to reign supreme in the charts. It was No.1 everywhere in 1952, and was anaemically recreated as a Brit-hit by the Chris Barber Band in the trad-jazz revival c.1959. This piece is in my own ragged repertoire and through the years I have nurtured a vision of the sultry
gypsy girl with a rose between the teeth that Sidney is so passionately addressing in this tango-inflected classic. “Ah! My leettle flow-eur!” I thought in a mock Aznavour accent as I tried to imitate ole rubberlips’ full-blooded playing and immense vibrato, but recently I was awakened from this one-sided dream when I found out that Petite Fleur comes from the phrase “Je vais faire une petite fleur”, (I’m going to make a little flower). This dated piece of French slang roughly equates with another politeness invented by the Mexicans, which involves lots of qqs and zzs and upside down exclamation marks, like !Quetxzcalcolotl! ؟which cannot be rendered into English or even uttered properly by an English larynx. The ! stands for the preliminary noise in the back of the throat which precedes the h in Guadala!hara or a good spit. This !Quetzc etc. mouthful of broken consonants is what you blurt out when, after a too hot taco or three you can’t hold on any longer and need to say “This has been a truly fascinating conversation, which we simply must continue another time, so nice to have met you all, thanks for everything, I have an urgent app ....., eeeek!” It says something about the Mexican way-of-life that they have needed to encapsulate this buttock-clenching piece of action into one economical word. What does it say? Something about very hot chillis and undercooked beans, again. Shakespeare’s Autolycus provides upper-class Brits with a more languid phrase - “I must but look upon a hedge,” allowing them to refer to the universally felt call of nature at the same time as discreetly advertising their exclusive sense of their own heritage, privy-lege and superior education. Meanwhile poor, prim, classless, mealy-mouthed, crosslegged Americans will come out in extremis with their simpering whinge “I need to visit the little boys room”. In other words Sidney wrote his great tune whilst sitting on a French throne – and the “petite fleur qu’il vais faire”, the sweet-smelling rose by any other name that he is straining to create is – a t**d. There I must leave you ..... PS Come to Little Rumba’s gig at the New Strand, Eardisley on March 1st to hear Petite Fleur and La Vie en Rose, encompassed in a third song - Le Poisson Rouge which, freely translated, means “The Red Herring.” Hugh Colvin

NEBRASKA,
the rise of Payne and the return of Dern His much-lauded follow-up to THE DESCENDENTS finds new wave Hollywood director, Alexander Payne, again weaving an affecting narrative from the conflicting, often concealed elements of the human spirit that invariably bind us t o g e t h e r. H e r e i t ’s cantankerous old Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) who, convinced he’s won a million dollars in a sweepstake scam, starts walking 850 miles to collect it from the company’s HQ in Lincoln, Nebraska. Although scolded for his naivety by his long-suffering wife (June Squibb, also in Payne’s ABOUT SCHMIDT) and son David (Will Forte, 30 ROCK), Woody remains resolute and eventually David, himself fed-up with his lot in life, decides to indulge his dad and drive him there. Like SIDEWAYS and ABOUT SCHMIDT before it, NEBRASKA soon devolves into a road movie, elegiacally shot in gritty monochrome which throws up various, often philosophically-inclined oddballs. This time they’re mainly avaricious if not entirely brainy family members and erstwhile friends who buy into Woody’s delusion, and an ex-business partner (Stacy Keach) who he believes swindled him decades before, and indeed vice versa. Comedic episodes concerning misplaced dentures and Woody’s disdain for Mount Rushmore’s presidential sculptures (which “don’t look finished”), typify the wry humor permeating the entire enterprise, as with Mike and Jack’s emotionally stunted wine-buffs in SIDEWAYS, and even George Clooney’s bereaved father in THE DESCENDENTS, but Woody’s encounter with an old lover (the marvelous Angela McEwan) also reveals an unexpected tenderness. And as with all his productions save SIDEWAYS, Payne has hung this film around a single major talent in this case, Dern. Undeservedly ignored for almost two decades –Walter Hill’s LAST MAN STANDING in 1996 was his last substantial role –here’s an actor with a track record beginning with Roger Corman’s cheapo exploitation flics in the ‘60s (WILD ANGELS, BLOODY MAMA) which soon embraced some blinding performances, albeit often typecast with psychopathic tendencies, e.g. KING OF MARVIN GARDENS (opposite ABOUT SCHMIDT’s Jack Nicholson), SILENT RUNNING and my own favourite, the cocky detective chasing Ryan O’Neal’s ultra-cool getaway artist in THE DRIVER – also with Walter Hill. Now 78, NEBRASKA may prove to be Dern’s most nuanced work yet, but it’s certainly Payne’s most accomplished. Also worth catching this month: AMERICAN HUSTLE (the ultimate in con-artistry), SUNSHINE ON LEITH (The Proclaimers musical, and it’s fab), AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (La Streep as you’ve never seen her), and in Film Soc. Corner, DJANGO UNCHAINED (Tarantino back on form, incl. a Bruce Dern cameo!) The Stagg, Titley

HEN Mr Pernickety first arrived a quarter of a century ago to live among the fecund fields and honeyed hills of Herefordshire, the gastronomic credentials of that county were not established. When he went to his local ale house to seek advice on eating places in the vicinity, one of the regulars, a sturdy, rufescent son of the soil, recommended a pub which he assured Mr P was excellent value. ‘The food on your plate’s about that heighth,’ he beamed enthusiastically, placing one open palm about eight inches above the other. Size, apparently, mattered. And for a while, this proved a popular position among the area’s victuallers as Mr P wearily waved away whale-size portions of undercooked chips and groaning vessels of flavourless veg. However, as the concept of the ‘gastro-pub’ gained traction, quality began to matter, and a number of talented chefs could be found cooking in traditional pubs, sited in hidden leafy corners of the county, until in 2002 an apex was reached when a Herefordshire pub became the first (and, so far, only) eating place in the county to be awarded a Michelin star. This handsome inn, The Stagg at Titley, was also named National Dining Pub of the Year in 2011/12 edition of the Good Pub Guide, and was included in Hardens Top 100 UK Restaurants. Although Mr Pernickety had visited the place, his ever-curious Lovely Companion expressed a desire to sample it for herself and suggested Mr P should examine it more thoroughly on behalf of the readers of the Woolly Organ. In order to give as broad an assessment as possible, Mr Pernickety recruited Mr & Mrs M, a pair of Footwear Magnates of a foodie disposition. And so it was arranged that in rare January sunshine they set off to experience a long Sunday lunch at The Stagg. On the way, the FMs suggested a diversion to The Olde Tavern on the edge of Kington. Since the arrival of the railway it had been the Railway Tavern until the late Dr Beeching axed the Kington Line in 1964, when it reverted to its earlier name. The pub is a double fronted villa in a Victorian terrace and inside, real Kingtonians sit and gossip as they might have done a century ago, with four good local ales on offer. A few miles towards Presteigne, The Stagg sits on a bend in the road. Between the car park and unassuming entrance there is a sort of parterre which seems to say, ‘I’m a bit more than a rural boozer.’ The place is one of quirky little corners and low doorways made to accommodate Welsh drovers of limited stature. Mercifully, despite The Stagg’s culinary reputation, there is still a bar where a punter can sit and chat while fondling a pint of good ale. There are four dining areas, into the least impressive of which Mr P and his party were shown, passing on the way a small electric fake log fire which frankly shocked Mr P. Their table was in a more recently constructed space, with unsympathetic little downlights, the whole having something of the air of the school refectory about it. The Stagg makes a point of not playing ‘background’ music, which in a space such as this is a mistake. The magical notes of a Mozart quartet or Glenn Gould grunting to the Goldbergs would have added much to a sense of wellbeing. Mr P’s party were unanimous in feeling that an open fire or woodburner would have helped, and, as your reviewer is fond of
reminding his readers, a good eating house should take account of all the human senses. However, it is the food that is paramount, and Mr P with his friends set about the task of ordering with happy anticipation. On Sundays, The Stagg offers a three course menu for £20.50. To start, the women both chose Baked Fig with Apple, Rocket & Ludlow Blue Cheese, which they loved. The figs were, they said, fresh and light, but they thought the rocket wasn’t peppery enough, and the Ludlow Blue didn’t quite do it either, but was very enjoyable. The men, on the other hand, both chose the muscular and meaty Fricasseé of Kidney, Back Pudding, Shallot & Spinach. This was, they agreed, an unqualified success, with succulent kidneys, supreme black pudding enlivened by a strong caramel sauce. They ordered a half bottle of frisky white Marques de Caceres for the women to drink with their figs, of which Mr P had a sip, while Mr M headed straight into a moody dark red Rioja, La Calvada (at a pleasing £15.90), easily man enough to cope with the strong flavours of the fricasseé. For main courses, the LC was very happy with her Sea Bass Fillet with Mushroom Duxelle & Herb Oil. She loved the salty crust on delicate fresh fillets, the green herby sauce and mushroom paste. The female FM ordered Pheasant Breasts with White Truffles – three of them, which she found moist and tender with an excellent sauce. Her only minor cavil was a hint of reheat about the potato croquettes. The Herefordian portions were so generous that she couldn’t eat her third breast, allowing Mr P that pleasure. Her husband, brushing aside the deterrent of a £4.50 supplement, ordered a Madgetts Farm Duck, Confit of Leg, Roast Breast with Orange Purée which he described as ‘faultless’. The carrot in a small flower pot of mushroom ‘soil’, he thought bizarre, but fun. Mr P decided to rely on a traditional Sunday roast–succulent slices of Roast Rump of Herefordshire Beef with Yorkshire pud and trad veg. The beef arrived in a state of perfect pinkness, and for once Mr P found nothing to complain of. Mr M had a Guinness ice-cream– a new departure for him – and loved it with his sticky toffee pudding, while the LC had Bread and Butter Pudding and found it buoyant and delicious with a Crème Anglaise. The FFM found her Crèmes Brulées of two different flavours not sufficiently contrasting to make a point, although Mr P tried both and enjoyed the distinct difference, while his own Cinnamon Pannacotta with Mulled Wine Fruits was perfect. His party left The Stagg feeling content, thinking it would be hard to find anyone within fifty miles or more who could match Steve Reynold’s cooking, apart, perhaps, from Chris Bradley at Mr Underhill’s. They were unanimous in their view that they’d had a delicious and brilliantly produced luncheon, but felt some attention to the ambience of the interior would have brought the experience of eating at The Stagg close to perfection. Wave Power
“So hope for a great sea-change on the far side of revenge, believe that a further shore is reachable from here. Believe in miracles.” Seamus Heaney
I
In May 2013, a wave energy machine called Pelamis P2, sited north of Scotland at Billia Croo, completed an important first year test programme. Named after a type of sea snake that swims on the ocean surface, able to survive in all weather conditions, the Pelamis P2 is inspired and informed by nature. It’s made up of coupled 4m-wide steel tubes that move with the ocean surface to generate energy, whilst inside the tubes, a slick array of hydraulic cylinders, compressors and converters turn wave motion into green electricity. I met Deborah Smith of Pelamis last summer at the Green Business Awards. How it Works Central to the Pelamis P2 design is the articulated tube - there are five sections in total and these are linked by universal joints, which give the machine its snake-like flexibility. The machine floats at the surface of the ocean and naturally faces into the waves. As each wave passes, the sections bend and the movement is converted via hydraulic power take-off systems inside the tube. The system basically works by pumping fluid into high-pressure accumulators, to generate smooth and continuous electricity. It’s a rather simple analysis (by a rather simple person), but there is a detailed description on the Pelamis website, if you seek more info. This power is then transmitted to shore using standard subsea cables and equipment. Surviving Harsh Conditions Billia Croo test site is a wild spot off Orkney, subjected to the powerful forces of the North Atlantic Ocean, and enjoying one of the highest wave energy potentials in Europe. The average wave height is 2 – 3 metres, but extremes of up to 17m have been measured and this makes it a perfect place to test the Pelamis P2 with monitored exposure to increasingly large wave conditions. The designer behind this project is an engineer called Richard Yemm, who has spent many years researching wave power. The ocean is a tough environment, and Pelamis P2 has been designed with survivability in mind, strengthened by steel, able to move with the tides or dive through bigger
46
waves, streamlined to work with the forces of nature. The success of Pelamis is part of a long held wisdom that we should be working with nature, and not in arrogant or economic isolation. Which is something engineers, farmers and growers, and those living/working closer to earth often grasp early on … and here they are, turning out amazing solutions in response to what is now an urgent scientific consensus on climate change and atmospheric physics. Wave Energy and Tidal Energy Waves are formed by winds blowing over the surface of the sea. The size of the waves will depend upon the wind speed, its duration, the distance of water over which it blows, the shape of the sea floor and local currents. Of course each wave carries kinetic energy, but the best wave resources will be in areas where strong winds have travelled long distances with minimal friction from the seabed and these waves in deeper, exposed waters generate much more energy. Closer to home, in Swansea Bay, the attention has turned to tidal energy. Tidal streams are created by the constantly changing gravitational pull of the moon and sun. Tides never stop, with water moving first one way, then the other. Tidal technologies capture the kinetic energy of the currents flowing in and out, and because the relative positions of the sun and moon can be accurately predicted, so can the tides. This predictability will make tidal energy a particularly valuable resource. I would like to hear from any engineer working on the Swansea Bay project, if there is a BS reader out there? Investing in our future Pelamis have produced six full-scale Pelamis wave energy machines to date, including two of the latest ‘P2’ design, which were supported by E.ON and Scottish Power Renewables. The stage of improvement and development is not over, but the latest test results are looking good. This early investment in wave power is not wasted money, but an important use of money for the future … a future where sustainable technology meets nature. In the longer term, team Pelamis believe that wave power could become one of the lowest cost forms of clean renewable energy generation. And that is something worth investing in.
