21st Anniversary Issue I

WAS going to print a facsimile of Broad Sheep’s first ever cover on the front of this issue as it was exactly 21 years ago. But Clare (without whom etc) reminded me that I’d already used it sometime last year as an editorial page when I couldn’t think of anything to write! No such problem this month. As soon as I heard that our theatrical guru, Nicola, had booked tickets for us to go and see Punchdrunk’s latest creation ‘The Drowned Man’ I said “Well that takes care of the next editorial”. That’s right readers, I went to London to see this bit of inspired madness so that you won’t have to. If you’ve not heard of the company before, they create large site-specific theatrical experiences in bizarre locations such as an empty office block, or under Waterloo Station, or The Old Battersea Town Hall. They specialise in building large detailed ‘film-like’ locations and including their audiences in the action This production of ‘The Drowned Man’ was staged in the Old Post Office Sorting Office at Paddington. As soon as we arrived there, I recognised the place and remembered I’d had a Christmas job there back in the 60’s in a large, weird, Kafkaesque mail sorting hall. The building covers three or four floors and we were ushered in and taken up to the third floor, given identical bird like masks to wear at all times, exhorted to explore the building on our own, not with our friends or partners and then let loose into a gloomily lit, black painted, smokey, scarey world which we were told was Temple Studios in Hollywood and the streets around it. My first instincts were to smartly rush around the building to sum up the size of it and how all the different bits were stuck together and then to find out what the storyline was. Both these ambitions turned out to be unfeasable as the set design was so fantastic it was altogether impossible to work out how all the bits fitted together or even remember which floor you were on. As for the story line, I did begin to come across various little scenes - a doctor’s surgery - a couple organising in a large barroom - a distressed dancer at a funeral that suggested I’d best stop racing about trying to see all the detailed and precise sets and get stuck into the actors. ......I was following one piece of action with a group of about 20 other audience members when we crossed paths with another group of 20 or so racing along in the opposite direction and it occurred to me that the people Small Ads 4 who had been before or who Philosophy 6 knew the set up were sticking Letters & Poems 7 closely on the heels of one of Art 8 the major actors and letting them lead them from one scene to Art workshops 12 another and so that’s what I began to do and was led in quick succession to a strange Cinema 18 table-top stand off dance between a secretary and an actress in a conference room, Dance 22 a bout of pill taking in a doctor’s surgery, a lascivious menage a trois dance on top of a 1950 Studebaker, a large and very violent fight between four blokes in a barroom, a Food 24 transvestite cabaret, and a crying girl and her boyfriend in a very small bedrooms Music 26 which led onto a fully fledged film shoot for a 1950’s teenage rock musical! On the Music workshops 38 way I bumped into a run-down caravan site; a small church with an overflowing bath, Venues 39 a complete Los Angeles street with a Diner, a toy shop, a bootmakers, a clothes shop and a shop selling peas. ELL, Sid, it’s almost here again.’ ‘What is?’ ‘Christmas!’ ‘Don’t get me started about Christmas - it gets on me nerves. Good will to all men! Which joker thought that up? I bet he’d never met my neighbours for a start. Have you ever heard such a load of wossname?’ ‘Got new neighbours, haven’t you, Sid?’ ‘Don’t get me going. You wouldn’t believe the state of their back yard. Three old prams, a fridge and a shopping trolley. Mind you, I might get a bob or two from the supermarket. They’re offering ten quid for information about anybody you know what’s nicked one of their trolleys. And what about their so-called music, Bill? It drives me round the wossname. Are they deaf or what? If they aren’t they soon will be, with that rubbish blaring out. I’ve asked then nicely - you know me, I’m a reasonable bloke. Somebody said if I got an asbo that would shut ‘em up. I think I’ll buy one. What exactly is an asbo, Bill?’ ‘I think they sell ‘em in the supermarket, Sid.’ ‘Don’t get me started on supermarkets! I hate supermarkets. You go in to buy just one thing - a kipper, or a packet of fags, and then you have to queue for half a blasted hour behind some old trout who’s shopping for the whole of Wales. And then, just when it’s your turn, the very helpful woman on the till decides now is the time to take her tea-break. She sticks up a notice: ‘Till closed. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you.’ Lying creeps. Why don’t they just tell the truth? - ‘Till closed. We couldn’t care less. So shove off!’ ‘Is the family coming for Christmas, Sid?’ ‘Don’t talk to me about the family! They give you the wossname. Oh yes, they’re coming all right. Both of ‘em and the two kids. Blessed hooligans. Florian - can you believe they called him ‘Florian’? - sounds like a lavatory cleaner - he’s only written to me, telling me he’d like an eye-pad for Christmas. What in hell’s name is an eye-pad?’ ‘Sending any Christmas cards this year, Sid?’ ‘Don’t get me going about Christmas cards! Last year I made the mistake of sending three - AND put stamps on but only got two back. Nothing from Fred. Selﬁsh tike.’ ‘By the way, Sid, we went out to a restaurant the other night. The missus had something called horses doovers.’ ‘Don’t wind me up about restaurants! You never know what foreign rubbish you’re eating. I went to one once. Got food poisoning.’ ‘Did you complain?’ ‘No. You know me, I’m not one for complaining.’ ----For some people complaining is an ideal but seriously underrated pastime - much better than, say, stamp collecting or even extreme ironing. After all, it’s cost-free, requires no particular physical effort and never runs out of candidates to get your teeth into. For many people it’s quite simply the highlight of their day. Like any other art form, complaining is not learned in ﬁve minutes: it takes years to perfect, which is why it should be included right through the National Curriculum. Far more useful than most subjects taught at school, there should be opportunities for all children to get a GCSE in theoretical and/or practical whining, perhaps going on to acquire a BA [Bachelor of Animosity] or even an MA [Master of Acrimony].

Of course, as philosophers you will readily appreciate that what we consider worth complaining about reveals much about us. Too much, perhaps. Sid is probably not in the least bothered about the threat of global warming but is incensed by the check-out lady going for lunch. What Sid needs, quite clearly, is cheering up. Readers have written to me asking how they might bring a little joy into the lives of people at this time of year. As your philosopher-in-residence I am more than pleased to offer a simple and tasteful, if unusual, suggestion. What about sending out Christmas cards? I know what you’re thinking: this is not exactly a novel idea. Yes, but what about sending cards + message to TOTAL STRANGERS? Imagine the excitement you will be introducing into their Christmas and the hours of fun trying to puzzle out who you the hell you are. [Broad Sheep’s legal department has advised against sending such a card to anyone with a serious heart condition.] Here’s an example: Dear Pam and Martin, Thanks for offering to look after Tarquin on Christmas Day while we go to bingo. Letters & Poems Monsieur, In the restaurant where I work near Aberystwyth, an English friend shows to me each month the Broad Sheep magazine. He tells me to read always the essay on Monsieur Pernickety: Sometimes it is not easy for me to understand the language, but it’s a good exercise for my English. I did not know what pernickety means - I thought that it is his name. Pas du tout! My friend says it means precise or careful. In French we say - très difﬁcile - for example - très difﬁcile sur la nourriture - like Monsieur Pernickety - or another word exigeant, which means demanding or particular. This is true. Monsieur is very pernickety about his food [so am I also, being a chef] but he is not very pernickety about his SPELLING of French food! Bien au contraire! he makes many mistakes. He is pernickety - as we say in French á temps partiel - part time! My friend has given to me many old copies of the Broad Sheep, to search for examples of Monsieur’s mistakes in the French. ROMEO & JULIET (PG) Since Zeffirelli’s lavish 1968 version, we’ve lacked a truly authentic rendering of ROMEO & JULIET, but now director Carlo Carlei has engaged Julian Fellowes (DOWNTON ABBEY) to“update Shakespeare’s language and story while staying true to its poetic cadence and plot.” Gorgeous costumes, a lush soundtrack and classic Italian settings perfectly compliment Fellowes’ script and the cast, headed by Douglas Booth (Pip in t.v’s GREAT EXPECTATIONS) and Hailee Steinfield (stunning in the Coen’s TRUE GRIT), are equally outstanding. Damian Lewis (HOMELAND) and Natascha McElhone (SOLARIS) play Juliet’s parents, the latter reunited with her RONIN co-star, Stellan Skarsgård, playing Prince Escalus who censures the Capulets’ rivalry with Romeo’s family, the Montagues. A marvelously entertaining testimony to the enduring appeal of the Bard’s star-crossed romance. WADJDA (Cert 15) Here in Film Soc. Corner initial buzz about Haifa Al-Mansour’s film stemmed from it being the first shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, which lacks both cinemas and tolerance of Western values. It’s also a winning tale of a young girl’s refusal to be cowed by male-skewed religious doctrine and its depressingly negative social effects. The eponymous WADJDA (a sparky Waad Mohammed) lives with her mother (Reem Abullah) in a dusty Riyadh suburb, her resourceful nature exemplified by accruing enough money to buy a bicycle – considered an unbecoming female fertility threat – to compete with her cheeky little friend, Abdullah. Confrontations with a hypocritical headmistress and her loving but conflicted mother twist a deceptively simple plot, and WADJDA is a total joy, albeit with a gloomy subtext.

La Madeleine and The Lion

R PERNICKITY thanks those loyal readers who have contacted him through the interweb thingy with recommendations of eating places to review. In the last month he has strayed southwards, and has also undertaken a voyage into the depths of Glyndower country. On a visit to Hereford to stock up on winter undergarments at Marks and Spencer (where he saw brassieres that could have doubled as parachutes for medium-sized animals), Mr P, his ever Lovely Companion and her issue, the Children’s Menu Consultant, found themselves thinking about lunch. Mr P has known and enjoyed Ascari’s in West Street for many years, but his duty to his readers sometimes demands that familiar ground be abandoned in favour of fresh pastures. Thus, following a helpful prompt, he and his small party headed down picturesque Church Street (grateful to whatever body lets its premises only to independent traders) to La Madeleine. As soon as he saw the front of the small restaurant, Mr P’s heart lifted. He sensed an immediate sympathy with the place, confirmed within by a Francophile, vintage feel which wasn’t strained or overdone. The place was full, but Mr P was quickly directed to the garden at the rear, where, it being such a mild October day, it was still comfortable to sit al fresco, in a very pretty jardin-a-manger, with greenery and bamboo roofing, pleasing coton pastifié table covers, warm, friendly assorted old chairs and vintage water jugs, reflecting the art-deco chandeliers within. The LC, a bit of a fuss-pot on matters of colour and fashion, and going through an anti-beige-or-shades-of-grey phase, murmured mild disapproval at the predominance of GREY in the interior. But, Mr P pointed out, this is Hereford, where the ripples of fashion arrive late and grey is still deemed pretty cutting edge. Happily ensconced in the garden, Mr P’s party chose from a short menu offering charcuterie or cheese platters which looked promising, homemade tarts (which really were homemade), fillet steak with béarnaise sauce, fish au gratin, and lamb-burger. Mr P and the CMC both went for cheesy fish, while the LC chose minced bleater. None of them were disappointed. Mr P and his young colleague agreed that the fish was as good as it could have been – strongly flavoured and pleasingly textured, with a tasty cheese sauce which didn’t overwhelm the good fresh salmon and cod beneath. The dish arrived with an excellent, thought-provoking salad. The LC was pleased by the compactness of her lamb-burger and the very fresh warm bun into which she gratefully sank her perfect gnashers. She nodded in quiet approval of the burger which she described (and Mr P confirmed with a small mouthful) as herby, delicious and (somewhat prosaically) ‘lamby’. Interest was added, she said, by serving it with hummus and a spicy tomato chutney. With a glass of house red, Mr P considered he’d had a perfect midday repast and left happily, about £45 lighter. La Madeleine, run by Helen Marlow and her team of talented women, has already won awards and been praised by the Guardian. Currently they are open during the day (from 10 am) Monday to Saturday, and in the evenings only on Wednesday and Friday. Mr P looks forward to going back for dinner before too long. Mr P and the Lovely Mrs P on returning from the Glamorgan town of Cowbridge (whose High Street is known as the ‘Bond Street of Wales’, much as that the modest trotting stadium at Pen-y-Bont is called – with no irony – the ‘Wembley of Wales’), took the opportunity to stop for dinner at one of Mr P’s favourite Welsh pubs, The Lion, a friendly, Victorian built place at Llanbister, between Llandrindod Wells and Newtown. This is a proper pub, an old-fashioned ‘Inn’, which serves all the social functions which Mr P feels it is incumbent on such places to offer. Because the Landlord and his wife, both native locals, have a connection (through a casual arrival at the pub many years ago) with the Maharaja of a Gujarati state, they are regular visitors to India and have returned with a large number of highly authentic recipes for curries. Over the years, their regular clients have become familiar with these spicy concoctions (quite unlike those served by the mainly Bangladeshi restaurants in the nearer towns) and they are now a popular feature of The Lion. The landlord, who is a gushing fount of useful information, is also enthusiastic about promoting local history and culture. There are Welsh wines on offer, Welsh single malt Whiskies and Welsh poteen, which are, at least, interesting curiosities, and a Welsh beer, Monty’s from Montgomery, which is delicious. They even offer a Welsh Curry, of lamb and leek. Mr P, while tempted by a menu of traditional pub food (made largely from things the owners have grown or reared themselves, or been supplied by Williams the Meat in Llandod), chose to eat a Goan Pork Curry which tasted as real and stimulating as any he’d eaten on his travels in the sub-continent, and by way of cultural contrast followed it with a ‘Sticky Date’ pudding, made from a recipe which one of the landlord’s resourceful daughters had brought back from Australia (to a few spoonfuls of which the LC gleefully helped herself, still smacking her lovely lips after her Gujarati Chicken Curry). It was with great satisfaction that she and Mr P drove back over the top of the moonlit hills into England, reassured that at least a few traditional pubs are still run by that near-extinct species, a genial source of wit, wisdom and local knowledge, the traditional pub landlord. Once upon a time... T HERE were many farmers and millers and wood cutters and shepherds and wheel wrights and bakers and tanners and corn growers and herdsmen and potato pickers and cider makers and all sorts of local people with jobs that simply ran in the blood, and they lived out in the hills and the valleys and the woods and forests and worked hard and looked after the land, for it was the land upon which they relied. But as you might imagine, every now and then, some people had too much meat whilst others had too many potatoes. So it was at about that time that local producers started to bring their produce to informal markets in the town. These markets attracted people from all around and quickly became very social events as well and a perfect place to go shopping, sell home produce, exchange stories, meet friends and family, share a pint and have a good old time. All across rural England and Wales, markets provided a focal point for each local economy. They were usually near convenient existing transport systems, for example at a crossroads or close to a river ford and when local railway lines were ﬁrst built, market towns were given priority to ease the transport of goods. As traditional market towns developed, they often had a wide main street or central market square. These spaces provided room for people to set up stalls and booths on market days. Often the town erected a market cross in the centre of the town, to obtain God’s blessing on the trade. The cross was also a reminder “not to defraud by cheapening”. Some take this warning to suggest that market traders were dishonest. But others will tell that it was a warning to townsfolk not to haggle the traders so low as to discourage their returning. A thriving tradition Of course time passes and things change, but even though supermarkets have had a massive impact on the way we farm, distribute food and shop … still the traditional market holds a special place at the heart of sustainable community life. Town and farmers markets today are not just a great place to get good food, they are also a ‘lifeline’ to small producers and family farms, and they can be quite a central point of a strong community even today. Research shows that town centres really do beneﬁt from a busy local market. Most shoppers who come in for the market … from locals to holiday makers … also spend money at shops and cafes, reversing the drift ‘out of town’ to big commercial centres. Markets like ours really help to support people starting new local businesses and those expanding existing ones; there is a great atmosphere in town on market day; and of course buying local food is good for the environment as food/produce travels less far and has less throw away packaging. The Christmas Presteigne Market will be held on the weekend of the Llanandras Fair, Saturday 7 December 9am – 1pm at the Memorial Hall and we think it’s going to be pretty fantastic.
