Back in the USA again
F
or a while there I thought we’d escaped the eagles claw and were sailing off into a brave new world. Detroit was in ruins the Asian tigers were on the march. We’d all be driving round in electric Kias and Tatas instead of Fords and Vauxhalls. Listening to Swedish pop and Brazilian pop music downloaded off an open and free worldwide web on our Taiwanese mp3 players. What a fool I was. What was I thinking? All the time the nerds of Silicone Valley were planning the most audacious coup of all. This time it wasn’t just our money they were after. This was to be no smalltime McDonalds, Starbucks coffee shop/diner venture to suck the last drop of blood out of ailing high streets. This was the big one, our money our time and ultimately our And by golly gumbo they did it. While we weren’t really paying attention and the American automobile and steel industries (just like our own) were slowly sinking into the West, While the banks were going spectacularly tits up (pardon my French) and egged on by our own stupid dreams of an internet where person could engage freely with person across the barriers of time, distance and nationality, we were all, of our own volition, signing on to facebook. 1.1 billion of us last time I checked and that’s not counting all the twttering and googling and youtubing we are all doing as well. Meanwhile the little nerdy folk are gathering information about us and they know who you are and they know what you do and they know what you want and they are going to flog all this information to the highest bidder, make no mistake. Otherwise there is no point in keeping all that info and they probably don’t give a toss whether they sell it to the NSA or the CIA or MI5 or Colonel bleeding Sanders. I don’t know why I am in such a tizz about all this its probably because I’m a bit slow and its only just dawned on me what’s going on but yesterday I went on a course to encourage local arty types to make more use of facebook as a marketing tool. There were one or two things said at the course that were a real eye openers. It seems that if you bung your website address in a facebook message they automatically give your message less prominence - they don’t want you taking facebook users elsewhere. What they really want you to do is to stay on their site as long as possible and advertise on their site and buy things on their site and eventually they will know so much about you that they will have a lot of useful information they can sell either fairly harmlessly to people who want to sell you dishwashers or potentially very harmfull if you plan to blow up Buckingham Palace and make yourself the new Emperor of The European Union. Still as William Hague keeps telling us, if you are doing nothing wrong you have nothing to fear. But William - what if you are just vaguely thinking about doing something wrong? However despite all this stuff I still want to get in on the act. I still want to give all my stupid little business ideas their own facebook page. I still log on to google just to see how to spell Colonel Sanders. It’s just a new more addictive slice of the American dream only this time its not Cadillacs (too big and thirsty for English roads but still somehow very desirable) or Harley Davidsons or Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe it’s how high your business is on Google’s search engine or in my case how many people watched my latest video on youtube (dont forget to log on to www.broadsheeptv.com folks)! Anyway after a hard day at the facebook grindstone what did I do in the evening? Yup you guessed it went to the pub to drink small bottles of American wine and listen to Martin Blake’s fine new band The Grass Snakes playing Bluegrass and assorted bits of Americana. Is there no escape? And while I’m having an anti-USA moment I might as well have a go at RAP as well. How the hell did they manage to flog that one dimensional often violent and misogynistic poetry and electronic beat music to the rest of the bloody world? I really thought that era of American music domination was over and the East Europeans and South Americans had it all coming their way but once again I was wrong. It’s high time we had a brand new musical flowering and all set off in a new direction. Think of Jazz in the 1920’s think of rock n roll in the 50’s think of punk (or then again maybe don’t think of punk). Come on Mongolia invent Razzamobocha or some other new dance craze and conquer the world.

In a Bit of a Flap?
T
HE famous Master of a prestigious Oxford college, where my friend worked, kept a cat. Out of consideration for his cat the Master had a cat flap made in the back door of his Lodgings. My chum tells me that when the cat had kittens the Master had a second flap made, for the benefit of the kittens - like the first only much smaller. The topic for your perusal, dear reader, on the rickety table this month is eccentricity. If you work in a university the odds are that sooner or later you’ll come across a few people who strike you as a bit peculiar. But if you work in a philosophy department the odds are much more favorable: there, in fact, you are very unlikely to come across anyone who is not peculiar - except yourself, of course. Yes, for those of us who ‘collect’ eccentrics academia provides rich pickings. It will not have escaped the semanticists amongst you that already we have used a number of different words to refer to such people: odd, eccentric, etc. There is no shortage of choice - peculiar, strange, weird, bizarre, barmy, and so on. Such people have a screw loose, or have a few slates missing, are a sandwich short of a picnic, or are off their trolley. If we like them we call them interesting and amusing eccentrics, but if we don’t we wonder why they are not in secure accommodation. Perhaps this is the time to paint you a picture of just a few of the interesting treasures in my personal collection. The Professor and the Kettle She was a distinguished New Testament scholar, her commentary on St. John’s Gospel being outstanding and controversial. Her knowledge of biblical Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic was formidable. She was also a fine teacher - and a very kind lady. So why, you might ask, did she send back the brandnew electric kettle she had ordered, with a stronglyworded letter of complaint? The kettle had come complete with a short length of flex with a suitable plug on each end: one to connect to the kettle and the other to plug into the wall. She claimed that both plugs were faulty. Neither fitted. That was because she had them the wrong way round. This lady, who had a mind like a razor within her field, was clueless when it came to sorting out a kettle.

The Answer-Phoney This is the same splendid character described in last month’s Broad Sheep - the man who made surreal calls on a mobile phone that didn’t work. He had a further talent, which he used to equally devastating effect. His dislike of all things electronic meant that his home was not plagued by an answerphone. Let’s be honest, he also disliked the telephone itself, not to mention most of the people who rang him. So to keep such people at arm’s length he became the answer-phone, complete with the various crackling noises and bleeps. Sheer genius. He deserved his professorship if only for his powers of invention and his refusal to be ruled by
machines. The Man who wasn’t [all] there This character too has made an appearance in a previous issue of this august journal but judging by the huge quantity of appreciative mail he generated I have no hesitation in giving him a second outing. This is the man - another university colleague - who believed that physical objects exist only as ideas in our minds. They have no reality outside of our heads. He seriously believed that if we can ‘create’ objects by the power of thought then we can ‘un-create’ them in the same way. Bless! To demonstrate this he proposed to jump from a second-floor window to the ground below, passing en route through a sizable greenhouse which by the power of thought he would cause to dematerialize before landing unscathed. He jumped! Guess what? The Man who Blew his Top It’s amazing what you can do with a stick of dynamite. An old friend told me about a couple she had known whose marriage was very stormy. Constant rows, shouting, arguments, bickering. He was a quarryman and worked with explosives. One day the rows got so bad that his wife - not for the first time but ironically for the last time - stormed out of the house in high dudgeon. Having had all he could stand he seized the opportunity and blew up the entire house. Let’s propose a toast: To the Eccentrics of This World. They brighten things up, they make us smile and sometimes make us ponder. But most useful of all they make us grateful - or disappointed - that we are normal. Surely no one could be more normal than you? Philosopher-in-Residence

Dear Pete I and my lady wife whose name for the moment escapes me read with immense interest the outpourings of John Eden, who does not like your editorials. Obviously I find his literary taste unsound. Our little family circle has experienced many a hearty chuckle at your mishaps on your Erectile Bike. Hilarious!!!! Now however I am impelled to turn to the political views for which the socialist Eden has made your organ a forum. Extreme left-wing views like his have no place in a journal like yours, dedicated to free enterprise and reiki massage. To take his points one by one: I agree with him that jackbooting into foreign countries is on the unmannerly side. It is however what made England great. Consider Nigeria, Diego Garcia and of course Wales. Seen in this light, Eden’s defence of this legitimate engine of history is oddly revisionist and left-wing in tone. As for the miners’s strike, I have it from an unimpeachable source (a cousin of the vicar, so he should know) that the demagogues he mentions were inspired all unknowing by agents of the Bavarian Diaspora, an organization with its headquarters in South America and a motto that goes Wir Bomben In Silenz . Bigging up the unions as a real force for destruction is an act of syndicalist desperation. It was not the unions that destroyed Britain, but foreigners. Ask Nigel Farage The Thatcher funeral, organized as it was by the British Tourist Board, gave a big fillip to overseas visitation of the non-Bavarian kind. Also the breweries of Britain profited greatly from the triumphal dances held in the odder parts of the North by people who knew no better. If more had been spent on the funeral, the stimulus to national alcoholism would have been even more powerful. But they kept it down to an austere 3.5 mill, presenting unanswerable challenges to the economy. We smell a socialist conspiracy dressed up as Poujadist thrift. So apparently does Ed Balls. On another subject, what has happened to Mr Pernickety, who has the cachet and savoir vivre to confer on your organ a much-needed gravitas combined with espieglerie, boulevardierisme, and the merest focal teaspoon of existential despair? Curiosity killed the cat, I hear you say, and I do rather agree. But my lady wife wnftmem admires his rumbling dark brown style and his views on mayonnaise. Could we be told? Banzai! cinema SUMMER IN FEBRUARY (Cert 15) Under the looming shadow of WW1, a group of free-spirited artists known as the Lamorna Group settled in West Cornwall. They included Alfred ‘A.J.’ Munnings, an impressively talented firebrand (andlater president of the Royal Academy), but based on Jonathan Smith’s eponymous novel and actual events, director Christopher Menaul’s (THE FORSYTE SAGA) film is more about the fateful love triangle of Munnings, upper-class bohemian Florence Carter-Wood and the Lamorna Estate’s land agent, Gilbert Evans. The affair unsettled the laissez-faire artists’ colony and this film brilliantly captures both their passions and the yielding social mores of the time. Great performances from Dominic Cooper (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN), Emily Browning (SUCKER PUNCH) and Dan Stevens (DOWNTOWN ABBEY) as the tormented lovers, and it’s evocatively shot in many of the original locations. All reviews by Mark Williams

BEWARE OF MR BAKER (Cert TBA) When a documentary opens with its subject belting the director hard on the nose, you know you’re in for something pretty unusual, but then legendary drummer Ginger Baker is exactly that. Inspired by great post-war jazz players like Phil Seaman and Max Roach, Baker is better known for playing with Cream and Traffic, later abandoning Britain for Nigeria and joining the equally eccentric FelaKuti. Rolling Stone journalist-cum-director Jay Bulger visited the now ailing, financially strapped musician on his South African farm, and whilst his film features many engaging reminiscences with the irascible 73 year-old, interviews with past musical partners and much period footage of them playing together will prove compulsive viewing for music fans both young and old.

BYZANTIUM (Cert 15) Innocent-looking Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) and her voluptuous hooker mother Clara (Gemma Arterton, TAMARA DREW) are actually 200 year-old vampires fleeing the consequences of Clara’s murderous bloodletting, whilst Eleanor feeds only on the suicidally consensual. They descend on a rundown seaside hotel which Clara turns into a bordello, ostensibly to finance Eleanor’s education. Very different from his INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, Neil Jordan’s latest melds dark historical thriller with romantic tendresse as Eleanor reveals her true self to an eager suitor (Caleb Landry Jones), who then betrays her to their English teacher, an uncredited Tom Hollander (Ronan’s menacing foil in HANNAH) and all hell breaks loose. The flashbacks, beautifully realised by Moira Buffini’s script and Sean Bobbit’s moody cinematography, heighten the women’s dilemma, with a great final twist.

Population L
OTS of people shy away from the subject of population and debates about how many people the world can cope with. Its actually quite dangerous conversational territory and I’ve known it to end with an idea to bump off everyone over 70. Yoikes. Is there a better solution? Systems thinking When you start to look at how any community works as a system, you can see that there’s always a limit to the number of people that a system can healthily support, even if people are fair, not greedy and don’t waste stuff. That’s why I was very interested in a talk given by Steve Wade of Wind and Sun (www.windandsun.co.uk near Leominster) during the Spring Greens event at The Court of Noke this May. Steve has been working on the Island of Eigg in Scotland. Up until a few years ago, the 90 or so people who live on Eigg were dependent on diesel generators for their energy. The generators were very noisy, dirty and didn’t actually provide 24-hour electricity. Maybe they could have made a case for importing electricity from far off places … cables under the sea or something … and then hundreds of people could live on Eigg and set up massive hotels … or whatever … but instead the folk on the island agreed that they wanted to create their own local and renewable energy network. Integrated renewable energy The system that Wind and Sun have been helping to develop combines energy generation from a mix of renewable resources on the Island. The major installation is a 100kW Hydro Electric Generator. This is supported by two smaller Hydro Electric Generators of 10kW and 9kW, by four small 6kW Wind Generators and 30kW of Solar PV. It’s all brought together for distribution to homes and businesses through 11km of buried high voltage cable with twelve Sunny Island battery inverters at the heart of the system. These inverters allow the flow of electrical energy between the batteries and the grid, balancing demand and supply, and they also maintain the charge of the batteries. It’s a bit techy I know, but this helps explain how a renewable energy system is different and more flexible/dynamic than a system dependent on, say, one big power station.

Owls and Sunny Island inverters Eigg Electric has got people talking. It’s an evolving sustainable system … a combination of modern intelligent technology and community spirit: The Sunny island inverters make sure that demands upon the system are met, using the state of charge of the batteries as the controlling factor. Wireless Smart metres called OWLs help people monitor their energy use, which is capped at 5kW per household and businesses 10kW. Everything is community centric so when there is an abundance of energy in the system, usually in winter, background heaters are switched on in the community buildings (Tea Room, Community Hall and Churches). This excess could also be used to power electric vehicles. People living on the Island play a dynamic role in the energy system. This is beyond passive consumerism. People on Eigg own their energy and so they make housing and domesticchoices based on conserving this energy. The Island grid “Eigg Electric” connects every property on the island, and eco-tourism is also thriving. The magic is in the blend The Eigg community has a system that can support them pretty much indefinitely, without wrecking the environment. It’s a system that shows both our potential but also our limitations as human societies today. There is no room for excess and that includes over population. We often put population growth down to medical advances or improvements in public health, sanitation and hygiene, agricultural productivity, development etc … but everything in this list has been backed up by the recent easy availability of fossil fuels. Carrying Capacity is a measure of the environment’s ability to support a given population. It is usually applied to the earth as a whole and it’s well documented that we are currently exceeding global capacity. Eigg Electric offers a glimpse of a solution. Its not too small to matter, its not naïve and its not greedy. Its human, simple, smart … and it has a future. Rachel at www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
