I

T WAS a tricky assignment but I realised that no one else could do it except me. One month to go before the General Election and everybody was talking about N Aitch Ess! Those lying bastard politicos were promising eight billion here, ten billion there, thirty billion to save N Aitch Ess. It was money we knew they didn’t have, but what was really wrong with it? I’d seen it on film, ‘Doctor in The House’, ‘Carry On Nurse’, ‘Green Wing’, ‘Casualty’, but I knew these were just ‘art house claptrap’. I needed to be able to tell my faithful Broad Sheep readers what was really going on and there was only one way to do it. Da De Daa Daa Daaaan!! (That was the high-tension musical interlude) Regardless of my own personal safety I had to penetrate deep into the bowels of the wounded beast.

I hatched a daring plan. At the next Velvet Violin Cabaret I decided to pretend I’d drunk a lot of Rioja and then fall over and be carted off to hospital with a sprained thumb. On the night of the gig it was all going according to plan. Brilliant Velvet Violin, especially Nuala Honan... tick. Rioja... tick. Falling over... tick.

But then the heavy hand of fate intervened as I was on my way towards the deck. A passing punter clipped my shoulder sending me sideways and I fell on top of another extremely unfortunate customer and then hit the floor. It seemed I’d over-egged the omelette, but as they carted me off to A & E I knew I’d achieved my goal.

Sadly the overworked staff at A & E had not read the script and after an x-ray, they declared me fit to leave and sent me home screaming in agony at 3.30 in the morning. There then followed a tense two-hour period where I tried to get from the car to my bed stopping every two feet to moan and swear until eventually Alison wheeled me down the coridoor on a metal filing cabinet with castors and stuck me in bed. At 8am the next morning, the hospital phoned, “We’ve just had another look at your x-rays, you have a fractured femur”. So it was back to Hereford and time for my investigation to begin.

Initially it was just like the telly. Lots of trolleys, people with masks on, ‘this is just a mild sedative’, completely blacked out while they apparently cut open my leg and inserted complicated bits of titanium, waking up groaning in a ward full of old geezers (me included), spending two hours trying to find out how the telescopic overhanging combined telephone, internet connection and satellite TV worked, gazing in awe at a plate of completely grey broccoli. But then it all started to get a bit weird. There were very nice, kind nurses from all over the E.U. and they all seemed to have specific areas of expertise and they all had clipboards and a barrage of questions.

‘Are you allergic to anything?’... tick. ‘What would you like for tomorrow’s lunch?’... tick.

‘Have you had a pee since the operation?’... tick. (And by the way, I’ll just ram a catheter up your willy). ‘Have you been turned on your side yet today?’... tick. ‘Have you had your painkillers?’... tick. ‘Have you had your antibiotics?... tick. ‘Have you had any physiotherapy?’... tick. ‘Have you been tested for osteoporosis?’... tick. ‘How easy will it be to get round your house when we chuck you out?’... tick. ‘Would you like a raised toilet seat?’... tick.

Meanwhile the doctors swanned in and out like visiting royalty, dressed in jeans and Architecture 8 jumpers and with a bevy of box-ticking attendants, at which point the nurses would gather Art 10 at the nursing station all in different shades of blue, all with their clipboards and indulge in Art workshops 14 a delicious orgy of box ticking.

But for the geezer in the bed next to me, with a touch of dementia, Music workshops 46 who didn’t have a clue what day it was, what year it was, or where he was, this constant Venues 47 barrage of questions and ever-changing cast of nurses was making him more and more confused. He needed some proper old-time nursing. Someone to sit beside his bed for a Band directory 48 quarter of an hour, hold his hand and explain where he was and what was going on and try Theatre 50 and find out if he was okay, but I guess there is not a box to tick for that.

Word 54 They bunged me out the door after three days and I must admit, I was pretty glad to be home, but a bit saddened by what I’d seen. Oi, You Lookin’ at Me? D

ID little Richard Rogers own a Meccano set when he was growing up in Florence? The evidence of London’s latest skyscraper, the sleek steel-framed £286-million Cheesegrater, would suggest that he has long been fascinated by metal bars and strips and nuts and bolts.

Dwarfing Lord Foster’s near-by Gherkin, British Land’s Leadenhall Buiding (to give it its pr-approved title), replaces what was a beautifully-crafted piece of modernism: Gollins Melvin and Wards’s headquarters for the P&O shipping line, completed in 1984. Its neighbour, the sepia-framed Miesian Commercial Union tower (also by GMW) survives – so far. But if developers are now willing to trash architectural gems after only 40 years, its days are probably numbered.

Lloyds’ City of London HQ and the Cheesegrater (both from the Rogers stable) are a quarter of a century apart in age - the venerable city insurance exchange is already Grade I listed - but only 15 metres apart physically, facing each other across Leadenhall Street.

Architecturally, these two leviathans couldn’t be more different. Lloyd’s wears its mechanical innards on its sleeve, so to speak, while the Cheesegrater’s discreet, buttoned-down steel-and-glass styling fits like a Savile Row suit.

which the City’s Chief Planner for 30 years, Peter Rees, waved through. This is Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly’s ‘Walkie Talkie’. The lop-sided tower’s name is a misnomer. To my mind, this £200M building looks more like a teenager’s 1960s retro vinyl loudspeaker, which has been left too close to a gas fire in the bedroom.

Last September, its south-facing concave-shaped façade created 105degC ‘light beams’, which were hot enough to scorch the paintwork off cars parked half-amile away in Eastcheap. The developer had to hurriedly erect protective heat shields in the street.

And then of course, there’s what The Guardian’s Ian Martin has memorably described as ‘that skein of phlegm, The Shard’. Still only half-full, though having a 5-star hotel, with 200+ bedrooms occupying 20 of the tower’s 72 floors, helps make the place feel lived in. Still to come: The Pinnacle (64 storeys) and The Scalpel (35 Storeys). Can the Grim Reaper’s Scythe be far behind?

The 736ft high tower has 46 floors, with its15,000-tonne steel frame carried on a grid of 126 load-bearing piles over 90ft long. The building’s west-facing façade is raked back 10deg. This, it is claimed, reduces its visual impact on the profile of the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral (for sanctimonious architectural bollocks, this surely takes the biscuit).

At the 11th hour, the development’s shop units were sacrificed to appease the planners, creating a huge double-height street-level lobby (or ‘public realm space’ as we must now learn to call these things). The tower is already 70% let, with the Chicago insurance group AON the largest tenant. Its 2000 employees are due to take occupation of 10 floors in July.

Two hundred metres away in Fenchurch Street, lurks what is unquestionably the most offensive of all the new wave of ‘Oi, Look At Me’ architectural excrescences

On your next trip to the City of London, watch out for the architectural detritus being shed from these flashy monoliths. Steel bolts have already fallen off the Cheesegrater and expensive sports cars have been paint-stripped in the street by the Walkie Talkie’s windows. How long before the Quatari plaything, The Shard, starts shedding some of its shards?

The great architectural critic Ian Nairn (more acerbic than A.A.Gill was about pretentious food; more damning of architectural brutalists than Jonathan Meades) once opined that the finest view of London was from the public viewing terrace atop the South Bank’s Shell Tower. “For that is the only place in London where you don’t have to look at the Shell Tower.”

I feel the same way about The Shard.

DARK HORSE (PG) Jan Vokes, a barmaid in a blighted South Wales ex-mining community somehow persuaded a bunch of friends to club together and buy an unremarkable thoroughbred mare, have her serviced by an ageing stallion, and stable the resulting foal on a local allotment.

In this inspirational underdog tale reminiscent of PRIDE and BILLY ELLIOT, a posh trainer then agreed to take on the young animal, although the prospect of this proving a race winner remained highly unlikely.

Documenting the events that followed, DARK HORSE boasts all the plot twists of the most ingeniously scripted drama, combining stunning archive footage with artful reconstructions and capturing the thrill and beauty of the plucky horse – aptly named Dream Alliance – in action. It’s also an uplifting salute to a working-class community suffused with self-belief.

With its star also returning to the action-hero mode that made him famous (SPEED, THE MATRIX franchise), there’s added irony that first-time director Chad Stahelski was often Reeves’ stunt-double. The fiery conflicts that ensue after Viggo puts a price on Wick’s head are therefore viscerally realised, escalating exponentially after an ace sniper (Willem Dafoe) and a coolly beautiful assassin (Adrianne Palicki) go for the money. But the spare script and Reeves’ twitchily taciturn performance are also perfectly judged in this awesome revenge thriller.

T THE end of May, the loveliest month in the Marches, a walker may stand on the eastern ridge of the Black Mountains and gaze down on fields of golden rape set among patches of green pasture, pink apple blossom and dark red plough. If the walker were to walk on to Hay Bluff, and squint down by the glittering, wandering Wye he would see the customarily dozy little town of Hay opening its arms to welcome pilgrims from around the world for their annual celebration of all things written, where long crocodiles of middle-aged women in sensible shoes clutching Daily Telegraph bags shuffle along damp walkways towards tents where they will ask Joanna Trollope where she gets her ‘characters’ and she will answer that they are an amalgam of people she has encountered.

All these literary groupies need feeding and, to help them find what they want, a few years ago, Mr P published a guide to Eating in Hay, which he enthusiastically recommends and is still available online at www.misterpernickety.com. Most of it remains surprisingly reliable, although, inevitably, a little dated. The Café Hay, for instance has sensibly closed and the venerable old drover’s inn, the Rhydspence after years of mismanagement and serving low-grade victuals, has finally sunk into being a ‘B&B with licensed bar’ – a disgraceful waste of an historic building, while its owner continues to strive for a planning change of use to that of a private residence, in order to deprive the area of one of its finest former pubs.

At the time of preparing Mr P’s Hay Guide, the Castlefields Inn was closed, looking forlorn and close to death. It is to the credit of the current owners that despite its slightly isolated position, they made the effort to breathe new life into it. That they should have so comprehensively altered it – almost beyond recognition – is regrettable, but it appears at some levels to have filled a gap, for on an April Tuesday, while not filled to capacity, it was doing good, steady business.

The bar and dining area retain barely a trace of the former old pub (although much is made of a forty foot well that was discovered during refurbishment, which now serves as a key ‘feature’). Mr P dined there with his daughter, Miss P, an aspiring novelist. She agreed with Mr P that the decoration and furniture were bland, catalogue stuff, but she liked the fact that one wall was lined with books. (Mr P didn’t look close enough to see if the books had innards or were just spines.) She also commented on the good mix of music, and the attentive good-nature of the young woman who served them. One reason for the evident popularity of the Castlefields, given its deeply rustic environs, must be its dedication to serving what Mr Pernickety would call Farmer’s Portions, where the kitchen staff feel that they must rise to the challenge of piling as much carbohydrate as possible on to every plate heading out into the dining-room. This is not a practice, in Mr P’s view, that will lead inevitably to a good dining experience.

She enjoyed the first, she said, but gave up on the second, appealing to Mr P’s well-known abhorrence of waste to deal with it, after he’d eaten his own starter of Lamb Kofta - Lamb Kebab served with Pitta Bread and Houmous – two balls of minced lamb (and padding) served on wooden sticks with a bowl of beige, taste-free paste and two small pitta breads. In his hope that this dish would transport him back through time to beachside tavernas in Southern Crete, or at least, the old Wine & Kebab restaurant on the Fulham Road, Mr P was disappointed.

Miss P, abandoning her weekday vegetarianism, ignored the menu’s three veggie options for her main course and chose a Classic Burger - 6oz 100% Homemade Beefburger with Mature Cheddar Cheese, Burger Relish & Crunchy Onion Rings served with Chips and Homemade Coleslaw (7.75).

The burger itself, though good, she said, was cooked longer than she likes it, and was m0re or less buried under a large tump of (nice) chips and big, fat battered onion rings. The coleslaw was warm and soggy.

She ate less than half what she’d been served. While she dealt with this, her father rather enjoyed his Castlefields Chicken Breast with a Blue Cheese Sauce & served with Seasonal Vegetables & New Potatoes (£12). The chicken and its sauce had good, strong tastes, but the boiled vegetables that came with it were plain dull – a little butter and seasoning would have made a big difference.

For pudding, Mr P and his daughter shared a good slice of Home-Made Lemon & Lime Cheesecake with cream. The topping was subtle and delicious, the bottom good and firm, and one portion (at £5) easily enough for two.

The Castlefields Inn is a Freehouse and Mr P had kicked off his evening with a good pint of Wye Valley Butty Bach (£3.10) followed by a couple of glasses of unexceptional South American Shiraz at £4.90 per 250 ml. His bill for the evening came to £49.30 www.misterpernickety.com

that is owned by and operated on behalf of staff, customers, suppliers, investors, and anchored into community and the environment.

Making transport zero carbon is a challenge, although there are some green shoots ~ the average distance travelled by a person in the UK by car or van has started to level out after years of average increases. And car manufacturers have worked hard to make cars more energy efficient to save fuel and cut carbon emissions. But one day soon we will need an alternative to the combustion engine.

Early prototype from Riversimple at Tour de Presteigne, 2009 Riversimple Sometimes, small changes are not enough and you need change that is transformational ~ something that makes it possible for everything around to shift with it. Riversimple is a business that designs cars. Despite having a designer working out of Barcelona, the heart of the business is actually in Llandrindod Wells. I met Hugo Spowers, founder and chief engineer for Riversimple, over coffee at The Workhouse Presteigne and we talked about the company’s new local network car.

This new car, not yet released, is designed around hydrogen fuel cell technology. A hydrogen fuel cell converts hydrogen into electricity - the only by-products are pure water and heat – so it has the possibility to be very efficient and clean, with minimal environmental impact.

Fuel cells have been used in NASA space-craft since the Gemini program in the 1960’s and even today they provide electricity and drinking water for astronauts on Space Shuttle flights.

Hugo and the team at Riversimple have put sustainability at the heart of their business. The first fuel cell car they created was the LIFE Car, developed by a consortium that Hugo brought together with Morgan and presented at the Geneva Motor show in 2008. This same car later made a local appearance at the Tour de Presteigne 2009 (see pic).

But without any anchor to people and place or to taking responsibility for the future, businesses can justify activity in financial terms alone, and so you get a situation in which meeting social and environmental needs is compromised on the grounds that it’s “ too risky” for the financiers.

But as soon as businesses place a meaningful value on social and environmental objectives as well as financial ones, you start to see how it’s possible make society more sustainable and stop climate change.

It’s really about how you put the whole thing together For more than 80 years, cars have been designed around the internal combustion engine. And to an extent society has designed itself around the car. The hydrogen fuel cell car offers the same freedom as any other car. Its quick to fuel, easy to drive, it can go fast. But as Hugo explained, once you take the heavy petrol engine away, all sorts of new stuff is possible: • The bodywork can be lighter because it doesn’t

have a big old engine to house • The space inside the car can be freed up so that

a small car can still be nice and roomy • By using modern composite materials you can

build streamlined cars, without sacrificing

strength or durability • The last Riversimple model placed four light

electric motors, one in each wheel, and these

motors can even regenerate electricity when the

car is braking • If all this is sounding a bit expensive then you

can look at changing the approach to ownership And the main point of all this is you can create a really modern car that does what we need it to do, but move away from the heavy toll on the environment caused by petrol and diesel cars.
