What’s On - Herefordshire & The Marches

Political tensions are running at such an all time high I have decided it’s time that Broad Sheep entered the arena of genuine investigative journalism. I have therefore commissioned this special report on one of the world’s most troubled hot-spots and sent one of our top journalists undercover right into the heart of the beast. This is their report.

Another Country

I

T is very difficult to get into this isolated nation nowadays, especially since the latest round of threats and counterthreats against the European Union. However, posing as an itinerant Rumanian brick-layer I succeeded and I can now bring you the following rather sobering report. I met up with the minibus that was to carry me and my fellow brickies into the neighbouring country on a freezing spring morning in a windy car park in Presteigne. Our plan was to try and dodge the border posts by taking one of the many small roads that cover this bit of the country and try and make it to Kington without being spotted by the Border Police. Fifteen minutes later our taciturn driver let out a contented sigh. ‘We’re in’ was all he said. The road itself was peppered with pot holes, a series of bad winters had conspired to break up the tarmac and it seemed this cash strapped nation could ill afford to mend the roads. After just twenty minutes we arrived in the centre of Kington. Much to our surprise this major local trading centre was ominously empty. I ventured in to the main street to find out what was going on. In the High Street I found a morose looking man sweeping the street. “Hello comrade” I said. “Why is the town so deserted?” “They’re all at home” he replied. “They’re all watching the funeral”. Suddenly I remembered - today was the day they said goodbye to their beloved leader from the 1980’s, ‘Kim Jong Thatcher’, the leader who had taken them into war against the mighty Argies. She was the one who had fearlessly defended the country’s right to own a small island in the South Atlantic seven thousand miles away. She was the one who had fearlessly fought the evil miners and closed all the coal pits so now they had to buy gas from Russia. She was the one who had fearlessly fought the unions in the car industry, so now they had no car industry at all except Bentley owned by V.W. Jaguar/Landrover owned by Tata-India and Minis and Rolls Royce owned by BMW. They were sending her off in style, full military honours to the tune of £10 million. Even their mighty national timepiece, Big Kim Ben was to fall silent. “And of course” added the sweeper, “It is Wednesday, so it’s early closing and the town’s always a bit deserted”.“Thank you for your kindness” I said. “Can you tell me, are you happy as a sweeper of roads”? “Haw, Haw, Haw” he said. “I’m not a roadsweeper, I’m a successful banker on a pheasant shooting holiday and I have just bought this antique broom to put by the fireplace in my 15th century manor house”. “Really” I said, much surprised by his revalations. “No, you idiot” he said gloomily “I Small Ads 4 AM a roadsweeper” and trudged off up the street. I hurried back to the minibus and we set off towards the regional capital, Hereford. Philosophy 6 Thirty minutes later we were on the outskirts of Hereford. Thirty minutes later we Art 8 were still on the outskirts of Hereford. It seems the regional capital has a major Art workshops 14 traffic problem. The local party cadre having decided it’s much better to spend £90 Cinema 18 million re-developing the old cattle market into a towering, shiny retail monument to their leaders Hwang Jong Cameron and Hang Ozzi Osbourne, than to build the Dance 20 bypass the peasants have been crying out for. Food 22 However it must be pointed out Music 24 that Hwang Jong Cameron has not got it all his own way. Despite his atMusic workshops 41 tempts to pick a fight with Germany, Venues 43 which brings him lots of support from Band directory 44 the peasants and political cadres Theatre 46 alike, he has a formidable opponent from his own party, in the shape of Word 50 Doo Bong Boris, the clown prince of Green pages 54 London. The people dislike Cameron Comp therapies 56 because, unlike Kim Jong Thatcher, he is a slick posh boy and hangs We take no around with Jim Car Park Clarkson in responsibility for Chipping Norton. But the people like Doo Bong Boris because although he is a slick the veracity of the posh boy, he rides a bike and makes jokes. information herein Finally we arrived in a small car park in the centre of Hereford. The car park was Pete Mustill full of expensive looking German built ‘Chelsea Taxis’, no doubt belonging to the Mayfield, Stapleton, wives of the party apparatchiks. I wandered up the row of Range Rovers running my Nr Presteigne, Powys hand across their shiny bonnets when suddenly I felt a glove on my shoulder. LD8 2LS “Aha. Mr Broad Sheep if I’m not mistaken”. I turned and stared into the evil face of Tel: 01544 260051 Jang Sung Plod, the notorious Chief of Hereford’s Secret Police. “I think it’s time we Email: info@broadsheep.com sent you back to the ‘Green Green Grass of Home’” he sneered. “Next time Website: www.broadsheep.com we see you this side of the border it will be five years hard labour, packing shelves in Tesco. Mobile Phoneys?

N

6

O escape. They are absolutely everywhere. In shops, on trains, in restaurants, at the theatre – every blessed where: people clutching mobile phones. Trains are the worst place. There it’s not uncommon to see some weird individual with not one phone but several. The fact that the railway companies offer ‘silent’ carriages is their attempt to provide the traveller with some protection from this modern-day pestilence. But dear reader, beware: mobile phone users are not always what they seem to be and it goes without saying that philosophers just love things that aren’t what they seem. It has, after all, kept them in business for centuries. A university colleague disliked electronic gadgetry in general, but his real bugbear was the mobile phone, or more accurately, its users. So intense was his hostility that he took drastic measures. It should be explained that this was a man with an exceptionally bizarre sense of humour. He got hold of a mobile phone which was actually only an outer case. It was empty. No way could it work. However this did not prevent him from using it, often with hilarious but sinister consequences. He used it mainly on trains, the more crowded the better. Since he and I spent a lot of time together on trains I knew exactly what to expect and looked forward to such happenings with a mixture of amusement and sheer dread. [At this point sensitive readers should go and make a cup of tea.] A favourite ‘conversation’ would go along these lines: “Is that you Bill? I’ve been thinking about where you said you’ve buried granny in the back garden. I think she’s far too near the pond. Remember, the entire garden is on a flood plain. What am I worried about? Well, I think she’ll resurface the next time you have heavy rain. As you very well know she was a cantankerous old biddy at the best of times, always popping up in unexpected places and causing untold mayhem. If you’re not very careful she’ll carry on doing this even though she’s dead.” When such ‘conversations’ were happening the effect on other passengers was a joy to behold – a combination of morbid curiosity and profound unease. My chum’s antics, however, raised a fascinating question in my mind: all these people using their mobile phones – are they genuinely speaking to another person, or to someone imaginary? Or are they in reality just talking to anyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot? Are they mobile phoneys? You might have assumed [something that no decent philosopher should ever do] that a proper conversation is going on. Really? Just as young children create imaginary friends, maybe thousands of adults too use their mobile phones for the same purpose. Who knows? For the lonely person or the person living a dull sort of life, why not jazz it up a little? With very little practice you can easily convince yourself that your imaginary friend really does

exist. So it’s just possible that some of these people sporting mobile phones are in actual fact customers of a brand new and innovative company – phoneyphones. com. This is how it could work for YOU. For a mere £74.00 [including p+p] you could become the proud owner of a phoneyphone™. This empty case looks totally authentic and comes with – and isn’t this the icing on the cake? – a selection of scripted’conversations’. Also, a more sophisticated model available at a paltry £99.99 features a button which activates the realistic sound of someone ringing you up. phoneyphones.com, by means of their scripted conversations, bring your dreams within reach. To quote that underrated 20th century thinker Arthur Daley, ‘the world’s your lobster’. You need never be alone again, and with the minimal effort required to learn the scripts you can be whatever you want to be. A purveyor of dreams – that’s phoneyphones.com. Here are opening lines from just a few of the many conversations designed for YOU, the discerning user: ‘Is that Ten Downing Street? Good morning. Sir Watkin Grim here. The prime minister is expecting this call.’ ‘Good news, Carruthers. The arms deal has gone through. I’m flying to Washington to meet the gobetween.’ ‘Cecil has escaped again. It beats me why they changed his medication.’ ‘Is that you, Ozzie? I’ve got to whisper. The plans for the bank job are going well, but we still haven’t got a decent bloke to drive the van.’ ‘Dr. Smith – I understand your distress at amputating the wrong leg, but mistakes can easily happen. I once amputated the correct leg, but on the wrong patient. Neither of us, so to speak, had a leg to stand on.’ Plato frequently asked ’what is reality?’ but phoneyphones.com have answered: reality is whatever you want it to be. So dream on. The Roast Ox - Painscastle A long time ago, when Mr Pernickety was an eager young Kilvert buff and liked to follow the peregrinations of the curious cleric, he would find himself up in the Begwns, retracing the steps of that most Victorian vicar. He was hoping, perhaps, to recapture some of the Rev Francis’s sense of innocent wonder at the sights and history of this undersubscribed and, in Mr P’s view, deeply sympathetic landscape. In fact Mr P did once meet a very old woman – known to catch moles using only patience and a mallet – who lived in a cottage up by Crowther’s Pool and was said to be either Gypsy Lizzie – a small girl in whom the Rev Francis had often expressed interest – or, more likely, her daughter. Kilvert liked to walk up from his lodgings in Clyro to Painscastle, where, in March 1870 he tells his diary that a giant (a former petty chief) had once, “carried off to Painscastle ‘screaming and noising’ Miss Phillips of the Screen Farm, Erwood, whom he found disporting herself with her lover, Arthur, on or at Bychllyn Pool.” After a hard day roaming in pursuit of Kilvert’s lyrical descriptions on the hills above Painscastle, Mr P would find himself looking for sustenance, or at least a drink, in the village. For a long time the only pub there was closed after gutting by fire. When it re-opened it appeared as a most retrospective establishment, serving its scattered community with a great variety of (some very dicey) ciders in an atmosphere of pleasing authenticity. This kind of altruism seldom pays these days, and two years ago, the management of the free house passed to Mr Tony Jones. Mr Jones has more or less abandoned the cider house concept (though he always has a good cider on tap) and, while certainly retaining the important priorities of a traditional rural pub in an isolated settlement, he now serves lunches and dinners designed to attract visitors from well beyond the parish boundaries. Mr P stopped there briefly with his lovely companion on the way back from the Bookfest last summer, when they weren’t especially impressed. But he was recently prompted by a Hay artisan whose views he respects to have a closer look. As the only female of Mr P’s issue (always known as the Sausage) was staying with him here in the Marches (in order to complete a dissertation on lesbian literature) he invited her to join him for a drive across the scenic hills of Radnorshire on a spring evening to sample the food at The Roast Ox. It was worth the journey for the view of the snow-capped Black M’s alone. The Ox wasn’t too spoilt in its post-fire restoration. It has a floor of big stone-type flags, bare stone walls and plenty of naked timber, as well as some amusing (presumably ersatz) stone gargoyles at key spots. Old pews and refectory tables are pleasing, with simple rustic utensils hanging off the walls. The menu, sub-gastro, but aspiring to more than pub-grub, was individual and avoided most of the gastro-clichés which

22

tend to infest pub menus, while looking do-able in a simple kitchen. The Sausage, despite her svelte beauty, is quite a trencherperson and happily ordered a starter of Leek and Cheddar Cake with Poached Egg and Crispy Bacon (£5.85). She declared the poached egg perfect in texture and runniness, and the bacon of an ideal crispiness – a great success, she felt, and would happily have had another, had Mr P not put down a fatherly foot. Meanwhile, she had a good slurp of Mr P’s Garlic Soup. It reminded her, she said, of ‘eating escargots without those rubbery bogey things in the shells.’ Mr P knew what she meant, but thought she was being unfair to snails, who wouldn’t like to feel they’d died in vain. He enjoyed the soup very much. The S then ordered a Veggie dish, something Mr P rarely does for a main course, so he was interested to see how much flavour the Roast Ox chef could conjure from a meatless dish like Beetroot, Sweet Potato & Goat’s Cheese Bake. The pastry base was dry and disappointing, letting down the strong combination of flavours of the other three ingredients. But once again, without guiding parental hand (and wallet) the S might easily have ordered another. Mr P with uncharacteristic lack of adventurousness consumed a perfectly well cooked rump steak with dryish chips, while he had a small glass of house red (whose name he has forgotten) for a shocking £4.50 – a price which always produces a sour taste. Why on earth pubs take the risk of upsetting reasonable punters by charging effectively £18-£20 for a bottle of wine that should have cost them around four quid is a mystery. It’s not as if they have had to pay a chef to prepare it or anything – someone just had to pull a cork out (or more likely unscrew a metal cap). In the quiet season, they should go off to workshops on the psychology of the British punter and learn the error of their ways. Despite this cavil, and the S, who is an aspiring (and, in Mr P’s proud view, more than promising) writer who likes to experiment with metaphor, describing it as a bicycle accident on a plate, she and Mr P very much

enjoyed their Pannacotta with Baked Rhubarb & Pickled Ginger for the light pannacotta gave them a great, sweet lift, just as it should at the end of dinner. They also appreciated while they were dining that the pub happily caters for a good cross-section of the local population, as a place to eat and a place to drink real beer – particularly Wye Valley’s Butty Bach. Young healthy chaps with outdoor complexions who might farm sheep or design websites (it’s not easy to tell the difference these days) play darts with non-intrusive good-humour, and it felt like a place where it was easy to talk to strangers – always a sign of a proper pub. On his next trip to the Bookfest, Mr P will call in again. http://www.roastoxinn.co.uk/ Mr Pernickity - www.misterpernickety.com

What If... Y

OU wake up one morning and find that you are someone else? Your well presented, three-bedroom semi, with fitted kitchen, conservatory and south facing carport in Apple Blossom Drive has fallen through a crack in the ether and now you live on a mountain in Ireland. You have no money, no Renault Clio, no bank card, no I-phone. And what’s more, you can’t go shopping, you don’t have access to the internet and there’s no gas or electricity, because now you are part of an off grid community. You let out a long howl of modern angst and a soft voice in your head answers back: “Quantum physics my child, now you are free.”

54

*** For three days you sulk, but in the end hunger and loneliness drive you outside. In this parallel universe, you’ve been keeping bees, growing vegetables and looking after a horse. But what about your promising career in Data Analysis? You weep. For days. But the cat sitting in a patch of sun cleaning her paws is singularly unmoved. She is your cat now and her name is “Amira Paratas” which roughly translates as friend who catches rats. You often wake to the sound of birds singing. At other times you waken to rain falling in sheets and the storm doesn’t pass for weeks and your world becomes entrenched in cold, damp, clingy, colourless, mudspattered hopelessness. Then you wake up again … and the sun comes out. You step outside of the person you used to be and take a deep breath of crisp, clean air and there is work to be done. Perhaps it was always like that. For example, last week you helped to plough the fields with a guy known only as John , a horse known only as Paddy and an old set of ploughshares, rattling amongst the dirt and stones and coaxing the field back into life. Now the earth stands in gentle furrows, dark and textured and ready to be planted. It’s a good feeling. You are reluctant to say this life is OK, but you have let go of your Data Analysis ambitions, and even the long drop is not as bad as your sophisticated expectations led you to assume. And so this off grid, community based existence becomes your life and the ebb and flow of the natural world becomes your life parameter. Then, without warning, you wake up and you are back in Apple Blossom Drive.

*** The TV is on and the washing machine running full blast and the car won’t start and apparently there are 7 billion mouths to feed. Scientists are studying something called climate change and the honey bees are at their wits end trying to raise colonies under impossible circumstances whilst the minister for Blah Blah Blah and the Environment dictates the fate of badgers. There’s nobody to bail you out if your life falters anymore, and some pompous old nut job has written an editorial in the Daily Something or the other, showing why we cant afford to look after the environment because of the economy. “Chasing spurious environmental target will make us uncompetitive and drive up cost” the Rt Hon Geoffrey Helmet agrees, puffing out his chest “There is a sensible and practical alternative to tackling the environmental challenges our world faces.” What’s more, he has the data to prove it. You realise he is crazy. Rachel at www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk AUTHOR’s NOTE “What if” is part of a series of pieces asking “what if we looked at this from a different perspective?” In media speak, a frame is the story behind the story. Or you could say it’s the medium or context in which a news story is presented. In some ways, the informational content of news reports is less important than the interpretive commentary that attends it. For example, politicians and the mainstream media tend to frame current issues in relation to the economy. We often judge environmental issues through the lens of the economy, when it should be the other way round. I am interested in how we might change some of the dominant frames, those that no longer serve our wider interests.
