RESTEIGNE’S twin town is Ligné, 15 miles north of Nantes. Our band have been angling for a visit and we finally got our chance to go and help them celebrate the 10th anniversary of their cultural centre - Le Préambule. We were booked to play as support for a certain Graeme Allwright. As a result of this gig, we managed to pull together a short mini-tour playing at a jolly pub in Brittany, a posh theatre in Ancenis and then finally in a great converted mill in Baugé, near Angers. I don’t know if you have ever been on tour with a band, but it’s a well established pattern. The days consist of a lot of in-jokes and tremendous bouts of heavy drinking and even heavier hangovers. In France, this can also include the dreaded ‘Cheese hangover’, the result of trying too many regional soft cheeses at one sitting and centred on the bowels rather than the head! We were therefore shocked and horrified to discover that although the gig was in the evening, the sound check was at 10.30 in the morning, leaving us with a whole day to fill, drinking and cracking stupid jokes to each other. With that in mind, we decided to slope off to Nantes to see, and possibly have a ride on, the amazing Mechanical Elephant. (Have a gander at ‘The Sultan’s Elephant’ on You Tube if you’ve never seen it). This went down like a lead balloon with the organisers of the Ligné shindig and the cultural mayoress threw a massive and rather noisy moody on the spot! It seemed that apart from our friend John, who’d flown specially from Presteigne to represent the Welsh end of the twinning committee, we were the only Brits available, and we were definitely expected to be around for the civic lunch. Now civic lunches aren’t really my thing, in fact lunches aren’t really my thing - breakfast at midday is more my thing, but what the hell, ‘when in Rome’. We all got split up onto separate tables and I got put next to a semi-conductor engineer who spoke impeccable English and who settled down to spend the next two hours telling me what was wrong with the English system of district, regional and national governments. What’s more he was spot on the money and so all I could do was mumble agreement in between mouthfuls of confit duck and chocolate pudding. I suppose the very peculiar feeling in my stomach were the rumblings of outraged British nationalism, but since I’ve never subscribed to any forms of nationalism, especially the British sort it was hard to tell. My only rejoinder was to whisper under my breath “at least we don’t all live in caves’, but more about the caves in a minute. First of all we had to get through the rest of the day which involved a lot of smiling, shaking hands, listening to three speeches by the mayor and jamming a couple of songs with the local trad-jazz band. Small Ads 4 Finally we got to the main event of the evening - Graeme Allwright. I assume I’m Art 6 right in guessing you’ve never heard of him, me neither, but in France and only in Art workshops 10 France, he is massive, proper big time. He is a quite a decrepit 87 year old New Zealander who sings very boring covers of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen songs Cinema 14 in both English and French. I really didn’t like it and snuck out after 20 minutes but Dance 18 Graeme, trooper that he is, went on to play for two and a half hours straight, with Food 20 no interval! By the time he had finished, neither the band nor the audience had the Music 22 energy to cope with anything but a cup of lukewarm Horlicks. Now, about those caves. Last time we were in the area, we’d cycled past these Music workshops 33 intriguing cave-like dwellings, cut into the limestone on the banks of the Loire, Venues 35 but it seems they are not only by the river. South of Saumur, we discovered an Band directory 36 intriguing underground set of houses which were open to the public and overseen by an old geezer who had been the last inhabitant of the place up to the 1980’s. My Theatre 38 guess is they’d dug a bloody great big hole in the limestone to get stone for the house Word 42 next door and then once the hole was there, decided to live in it rather than bother Green pages 46 to build anything.

cinema VILLAGE AT THE END OF THE WORLD (U) Here we are again in Film Soc. Corner where fascinated by the resilience of the few remaining polar communities, BRICK LANE director Sarah Gavron and her cameraman partner, David Katznelson spent three years filming in Niaqornat, a remote Inuit hamlet in Greenland whose 59 inhabitants were threatened with relocation to a distant city if their numbers fell below 50. The stark beauty of their harsh landscape and equally harsh lifestyle – they rely entirely on ﬁshing and the long winter months are totally without daylight – contrast with their quirky humour, robust traditions and determination to re-open a commercially abandoned fish factory. They maintain this will stem the exodus of Niaqornat’s youngsters, battling on against an unsympathetic bureaucracy ‘until the last man’s left standing’. A revealing, ultimately moving little gem.

PRISONERS (15) Every father’s worst nightmare becomes an excruciating moral dilemma when carpenter Keller Dover’s 6 year-old daughter and her friend are kidnapped during Thanksgiving celebrations. Dover, played by Hugh Jackman (WOLVERINE), finds himself head-to-head with brashly confident detective Loki, (Jake Gyllenhaal, END OF WATCH) who nevertheless fails to find the missing girls. But after his son recalls seeing them playing around a beat-up motorhome, Dover takes the investigation into his own hands, triggering explosive results and inevitable questions about vigilantism masquerading as justice-seeking. Paul Dano (LOOPER) plays the listless chief suspect and Maria Bello, Terrence Howard and Viola Davis provide terrific support as the other desperate parents, whilst director Denis Villeneuve again demonstrates a talent for multilateral suspense that won him his INCENDIES Oscar nomination. The Salwey Arms

WHILE ago in the Woolly Organ Mr Pernickety offered a comparative review of two motorists’ eating places on the A49 – the OK Diner on the roundabout at Leominster, and the Little Chef at Wooferton, three miles south of Ludlow. He thought well of the OK Diner as a venue for stuffing acceptable calories into young persons, made more engaging for accompanying grown-ups by the stimulating nostalgic properties of the coffee and ambience. The Little Chef, on the other hand, he condemned as unfit for human consumption, and Lo! It is gone. Hard by the grim, squat, public-lavatory-like shell of the Little Chef once stood another abandoned hostelry, the remains of a handsome mid-sized Georgian roadhouse named the Salwey Arms. This place, having been sold to a heinous PubCo property company some years ago, had become degraded in the way of most pubs under that regime, until it closed and no one could be found to occupy it on the terms being offered. Finally, though, after a long period of closure and, presumably, deterioration, the pub/property company had no option but to seek a willing buyer for the freehold – as a licensed premises – and it has been bought by the same people who purchased and extensively (some would say excessively) refitted and repainted (in vivid pink) the Jolly Frog near Leintwardine. While the Frog appears to be surviving, and under its new young chef has a good chance of prospering, it’s doubtful that the very large refurb investment did anything to help – it didn’t make it a more enjoyable place to sit and eat and it undoubtedly alienated a few of the loyal regulars. A solo luncheon at the Salwey Arms suggested to Mr Pernickety that a large part of the refurb bill at this establishment will also turn out to have been misspent. There is an air of having tried too hard to be chic and ‘stylish’ – like a Surrey gastro-pub – which doesn’t suit the building, or the region, for that matter, and isn’t especially relaxing – more patina and less gloss would create a more user-friendly ambience. Arriving at the Salwey Arms, not wearing pink cord trousers nor a cravat (for he possesses neither), Mr Pernickety was struck that the whole functioning of the place lacks professionalism; although the staff are willing and perfectly amenable, they appear unschooled in the art of hospitality. Mr P was asked to find himself a table in the ‘bar’, a soulless, self-consciously ‘lighthearted’ space cluttered with pointless high tables and high stools, of the sort that pub-designers portray as being filled with glamorous, youngish punters, mostly wearing asinine grins, yattering and laughing about nothing, while drinking cocktails in a way in which they might were they in a Mayfair bar, but don’t in pubs in the Welsh Marches. The day Mr P visited, the bar was empty; he sat on a shabby-sheeked pew at the only dining height table, facing directly onto a substantial red-brick pillar, with no other chairs for two friends who turned up and joined him.

On a working Monday, Mr P drank only sufﬁcient to test the basics. He started with a well-kept and therefore delicious Hobson’s Best, and followed it with a glass of Merlot (he’s ashamed to say he’s forgotten where it came from), which was uninteresting and overpriced. Could I direct the owner’s attention to the excellent French Pinot Noir shipped and sold by Aldi, at £4.50 per bottle. Mr P would happily pay £3.50 per 175cl glass for that, while giving the pub a perfectly respectable 200% mark-up. A quarter of an hour after arriving he was able to order his beer and was given a menu. Twenty-ﬁve minutes later, his starter, Moules Marieniere arrived, followed almost at once by the main course he had ordered, Sausages & Mash. The waitress had the sense to realise that Mr P was just one punter, eating two dishes and immediately took the bangers back to be kept warm until he was ready for them. The Moules (at £6.95) were for the most part enjoyable enough, although several (about ten percent) were bad, and Mr P could taste no wine in the somewhat bland sauce. The dish came with a few slices of very good brown bread. The Sausages & Mash returned unimpaired by their temporary exile. The bangers were well-cooked and tasty, clearly from one of Ludlow’s excellent butchers (it would have been interesting to know which) and the mash tasted fresh and creamy, which was a pleasing surprise. The small dish of vegetables – broccoli, French beans and carrots – looked and tasted uninteresting and lacked butter or any kind of dressing, but they were at least fresh and al dente. Mr Pernickety’s bill for two courses and a couple of drinks was £21. On this showing, the Salwey Arms, despite its shortcomings, to some extent confounded the mainly negative reports that had reached Mr Pernickety. However, it was lunchtime; it was Monday. He will go again to review it on a busy week-end evening – always more of a test. In the meantime, Mr P is not unaware that he hasn’t strayed to the southern extremities of the Woolly Organ’s footprint for some time, and will be venturing somewhere south of the Wye for his next review. HE newly independent Mid Powys Youth Theatre are celebrating news of a £5000 grant from the Arts Council of Wales in support of their bold new production to be staged at the Wyeside Arts Centre, Builth Wells in November. The show, a new play entitled ‘Water’, will mark the re-launch of the much loved arts group, and for parents, volunteers and members of the company who’ve been working tirelessly over the last few months to set the organisation up as an independent charity the ACW news is the final piece in that jigsaw. Artistic Director, Ralph Bolland, was delighted with the news: “We’re really pleased. We have a vision of creating something very special here in mid Wales, coupling the proud history of MPYT with bold plans for the future. This show is the beginning and we’re grateful to the Arts Council for sharing our enthusiasm.” ‘Water’ follows a group of ‘peak-water’ activists as their latest stunt goes badly awry. Their hard won public support collapses overnight and they find themselves holed-up inside a waterworks plant. The police stand ready outside the building and are willing to use all necessary force to evict the young protestors. The group is given one hour to surrender. The clock is ticking… ‘Water’ is performed at the Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells from Wed 6th-Sat 9th of November. MPYT’s re-launch is further boosted by the opening of two new junior groups, based at the Wyeside and catering for ages 8-11 and 11-14. “We’re delighted to be collaborating with Wyeside, both on the new groups and on ‘Water’,” said Ralph. “It’s our home venue and we’re expecting a high take-up for the Builth classes and packed houses for the show in November. It promises to be an emotional affair and people will come from far and wide to be part of it.
