AST week I went to see ‘No Fit State Circus’ show, ‘Bianco’ in a large tent next door to Theatr Brycheiniog and although I am a well known ‘grumpy circus hater’ (except I don’t hate circus as much as I hate fireworks), I rather liked the N.F.S. show. It still consisted of a lot of pointless hanging around on ropes and swings but the show’s designers were more than happy to let one see the nuts and bolts of the operation. So, while this rather musclebound midEuropean yobo was hanging around by one arm onto a bit of flimsy material he was also shooting up and down in the air on the end of a rope that was being counterbalanced by this guy who was running up and down the main tent supports. I got so involved with looking at the counterbalancers that I sort of forgot to watch the show itself. Although of course I kept a careful eye on the live band. Afterwards, I was wondering how many other art forms there are where the mechanics are more interesting than the finished article. I’m a sucker for films about bands and orchestras in rehearsal or ‘getting it together’ in the studio. Particularly old films about the Beatles or that documentary featuring Bernstein re-making the music from West Side Story. But I’m certainly not gonna rush down to my local multiplex to watch a film of a suicidal novelist puffing fags while sitting in front of a blank PC screen trying to think up excuses to go to the shops or do the washing up. Painting, however, is endlessly fascinating if you can get to see how the artist puts on the layers of paint, even if you don’t really like the finished artwork. On the other hand, Small Ads 4 theatre is incredibly boring to Hugh’s bit 6 watch in rehearsal. 3 Mazes: The Life Cycle of the Architect

UST after WW2 the psychologist B.F.Skinner created the theory of radical behaviourism; around the same time Orwell wrote “1984” and Kim-il-Sung took power in N.Korea. All three of them had worked out that in a tightly controlled environment you can get anyone to do anything, provided you use the right carrots - and some rats. Big Brother used the rats to terrify Winston Smith in Room 101. Skinner on the other hand terrified the rats in man-made mazes, then transposed what he saw to human beings. Enter The Architect, the apt servant of the grandiloquence of the King Rats, the property developers, the dictators – corporate, political, pharoahonic – whichever - to create not only Pyramids, Towers of Babel, and glass ziggurats at Las Vegas and Canary Wharf, but also to re-design your local town. 1st Maze At Uni The Architect took extra courses in psychology, plotting the course of traumatised, drugged and geneabused rodents, as they plunged through Skinner’s laboratory mazes, laced with heavenly rewards, surprise trap-doors, hellish vivisections and aversive shocks. In his first job as a council planner it seemed somehow obvious to adapt these principles to traffic management. In order to get to work, to the hospital, or the supermarket you enter a tangled one-way system which takes you the maximum distance round the city centre, only to miss a sign and come to rest peering through your windscreen at a badly lit multi-storey on the wrong side of town, the natural habitat of hoodlums and car thieves. The Architect’s indirect, sat-nav-defying routes ensure that each vehicle snakes along the maximum number of road-miles, exhaling the max. CO2 and causing many magnificent traffic jams, glittering under the sodium lights in the rain. 2nd Maze So finally you reach your destination: a squalid supermarket where the internal maze of windowless barriers, the rows of identical shelves, the pulsing fluorescent lights, the strange smell, the crippled trolleys and the music leaking out of the walls bring on the intended Shopping Catatonia so that as a disoriented lab-rat/ consumer you meander past the maximum number of supermarket shelves, distractedly putting the maximum number of reward-items in your rickety cart and fulfilling the same queasy dream of unfocussed desire that can coax even the most genteel of spinsters into shop-lifting. The only concession is a clearly signed escape route, a light at the end of the labyrinth, albeit gated by the tills, where the King Rats take your money before they let you out. Staggering into the twilight you wrestle your trolley across the broken tarmac and unload a shocking amount of cheap plonk, unwanted snacks and past-their-sell-by frozen prawns into your car, until you remember – alas! - that you have forgotten the one essential item that you started out to buy. The bog-roll. After three more cycles of the ring road, you stagger through the front door, collapse on the sofa and console yourself with the plonk and the poisoned prawns, only to pass stupified through a flat screen the size of a bay window into another artifically lit labyrinth with no exit and no heart i.e. the tv and/or internet. Waking many hours later it is time to go to work again, to rewind the nightmare of the day before, to

not pass Go and never collect £200. There is no tomorrow. The Architect has you by the wotsits and your troubles are not yet over..... 3rd Maze When at the end of a life-time’s shopping you have become an exhausted husk, a fully consumed consumer, past your sell-by-date, emptied of desire, when you have failed your MOT and your vintage has turned to vinegar, then a 3rd and final maze awaits you before you reach the final check-out. Latterly The Architect, that unelected social engineer, has been designing care homes. Anyone who can induce the innocent to shop-lift and do magic roundabouts that you can go both ways round (Swindon! Hemel Hempstead!) well understands the disorientation of old age. Into the Heart of darkness: Beneath her C of E exterior, she nursed a cancerous grudge against her husband, having fed, clothed and cosseted him for 50 years while he worked his way towards a Bishopric. She had endured his cutting remarks, and ignored his infidelities in exchange for a secure living and the covetted title of Lady. Then dementia began to strip away her impeccable manners and her iron discipline and her store of resentment overflowed. She interrupted him, she stood in doorways, she blocked his path, a metaphor for what he had done to her ambitions. One final night she chased him down the street brandishing a rolling pin, and was sectioned to a brand new wing of the local loony bin, designed by The Architect, a purpose-built assessment centre for old people who were not going gently into that good night, who were burning and raving at the close of their days, and raging, raging against the dying of the light. The ground plan was a labyrinth of corridors, identical rooms and mirror-glassed dead ends. The few windows all looked inwards onto the same leather–leaved evergreens in a sunless inner courtyard. The patients were by definition disoriented even before the ambulance crews took them from their homes and cast them adrift in this new maze. “Let’s see whether they can map their way to the food and the loo and then back to their cages” say the laughing assessors, watching on CCTV. They kept blundering into each other’s indistinguishable rooms, claiming ownership and trying to throw each other back out into the endless corridors. Visiting this Hogarthian laboratory, amongst the smouldering wrecks and the hollowed out minds, their souls buzzing against the windows like flies in winter, I came across a tiny old lady in a passageway, skin and bone, wearing evening dress – the scarlet satin matching the slash of lipstick across her face, and the fluffy white hems at her ankles and shoulders echoing her whispey white hair. She was facing a full-length mirror in the blind end of the corridor and was trying to shake hands with her own reflection. She thought she was being introduced to somebody at a Ball. “Ai dont think we’ve met?” she said. Trompe l’oeil, for the old folk. Rather fun, what? The building won an Award. Letters THE MARCHES - reply H.L.Mencken once said “Criticism is prejudice made plausible”, and that’s why I always take the views of others with a pinch of salt, preferring instead to form my own opinions. Still as one of the owners it hurt at a personal level to read Mr Pernickety’s review of The Marches in last month’s Broadsheep. Digestion of his review shows the prejudice behind the review, Mr Pernickety starts his critique by attacking our landlord, and I am not one to jump to the defence of Punch Taverns, but they own the building and there’s not a lot I can do to change that. Mr Pernickety moves on to question why we weren’t an “open-fronted brasserie” the answer is simple, we didn’t wish to be a brasserie, and our planning application to be open fronted was rejected. That said if we had seats out front they would face a barrage of vehicles parking outside the market, and we do have a large courtyard for al fresco dining, so in hindsight it worked out for the best. He readily attacks our décor, still I can happily ignore style advice from a man wearing pink corduroy trousers, cravat, and hair that is reminiscent of Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote. Further assaults of what we didn’t do follow, which is a baseless form of criticism, one might as well walk into a Post Office and complain that it’s not a pet shop. Eventually two thirds of the way into his review Mr Pernickety moves on to the food and drink, he was not complimentary, but by this point his prejudices were evident and unlikely to be assuaged. I will not respond to his points individually other than to reaffirm that we source ingredients from local suppliers where possible and prepare everything in house. We don’t pretend to offer high end gastronomy, just simple, freshly cooked quality. I believe in what we do, and the majority appear to agree. Mr Pernickety also casts judgement over our music “fast paced rock n roll” if that’s how he defines the combination of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney etc then so-be-it, I assume he’d prefer a string quartet. He then makes a negative comment on the diners nearby enjoying themselves, they are more than welcome to return. Strangely enough Mr Pernickety makes no comment on the fact that he had been in on several occasions prior to judgement night, or that he ate the entirety of his lamb shank leaving nought but bone. It sounds like we won’t see him again, something I won’t lose sleep over. I said at the start that I prefer to form my own opinions rather than listen to those of others; I invite your readers to do the same. We’re not aiming for awards, simply to offer flavoursome food and quaffable drinks at affordable prices, and a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere to enjoy it all in. Richard J. Slater

THE HEAT (Cert 15) Uptight FBI agent Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) demands promotion from her jaundiced boss (Demián Bechir) who then rather perversely teams her up with unconventional, foul-mouthed Boston detective Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) to capture a drug lord. In director Paul Fieg’s hands – his BRIDESMAIDS was the breakout movie for both him and McCarthy – this turns into an outrageously excessive buddy movie with dogged feminist undertones – virtually all the males, whether cops or crims, are utterly misogynist and invariably stupid. As articulated by McCarthy in particular, Katie Dippold’s (PARKS AND RECREATION) script is machine-gun hilarious, gradually transforming Ashburn into something approaching a mere mortal and a cast of seasoned pros, including Marlon Wayans (playing it straight for once) and Saturday Night Live legend Jane Curtin all give their all throughout.

One day he notices a middle-aged woman (Canadian actor/musician Mary Margaret O’Hara), rather distractedly wandering around who later asks him for directions to the hospital where her cousin lies in a coma. As a Canadian she has a language problem and the bi-lingual Johann offers to act as interpreter, a gesture which heralds a deepening friendship as they discuss the paintings and their life-affirming qualities. I WISH (Cert PG) Being shown no less than twice this month, Film Soc. Corner obviously recommends this gentle tale of sibling relations. Masterful at working with young, inexperienced actors, director Hirokazu Kore-eda (AFTER LIFE, NOBODY KNOWS) employs real-life brothers Koki and Oshirô Maeda, as adolescents Koichi and Ryu– separated at opposite ends of Kyushu island by their anxious mother and somewhat feckless musician father respectively. The boys believe that a magical moment will occur when the bullet trains that are about to enter service between their two home cities intersect for the ﬁrst time, and the family will thus become reunited. Kore-eda’s beguilingly modest working of his own script allows his naturally gifted but unprepossessing actors full-rein, yet avoids overt sentimentality in expressing their child-like hopes and dreams.

3 Reasons Why You Should

“Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that … you are half water. If you can’t go through an obstacle, go round it” Margaret Attwood. Now in its fourth year, h.energy is running events between 12th and 20th October. The theme this year is water and I met two of the organisers, Kate Gathercole and Jules North,in a funny little café, to get the low down on the plans … from pop up repair cafes to skill shares, eco homes, and more. Whilst we talked, we drank coffee from Peru with water which had been boiled using electricity and sat at a table made from a pulverized tree whilst I took notes, with a pen made from oil derivatives, on paper from another tree. There was a tablecloth made from 80% polyethylene terephthalate which was turned into a saleable commodity using electricity and the electricity itself probably came from a mix of the old and the new: coal, wind, hydro, gas, nuclear etc. Midway I checked my mobile phone made from composite polymers incorporating a silica chip and powered by a battery containing heavy metals and as we sat talking, cars sailed past the window on their way to somewhere, burning oil. All of this, as well as weekend trips to the US, radioactive tuna and disposable cutlery, is normal. But it wasn’t always like this and it won’t be like this forever. And apart from anything else, some resources like oil and coal, upon which we built revolutions and empires, are highly polluting and rapidly running out. Which is really where h.energy comes in. It’s a platform for new ways around a deceptively “normal” descent into catastrophe. This year there are over 100 listed events for h.energy, and this includes the Ladybird Safari events for kids … wild adventures in woods, painting competitions, cycle rides etc. If you are not a kid, then Ladybird Safari events may not suit. But do not despair, there is something for everyone. Will you go? Here are my 3 top reasons why you probably should. 1.Pushing the boundaries “Drop in the Ocean” is described as a 6 day performance on walking and water by artists Jess Allen** and Mads Floor Andersen. Jess is an installation artist and occasional aerial dancer whilst Mads is another artist, interested in meetings and connections. So, Mads will be at All Saints Church to meet you (All Saints is the one with the fabulous café) whilst Jess will be disappearing into the countryside, carrying water in a milk maids yoke … and to ﬁnd out more you will simply have to visit. 2. Skill Sharing When you strip away the trimmings, we are part of the ecology, so it shouldn’t be a surprising thing that living sustainably is good for you. Its something we have found to be true and so you really have to get out there and get involved. “This year there’s a special emphasis on community skill sharing,” Jules told me, “It’s about planting a seed of an idea and hoping these ideas will stick” For example, there are pop up “Repair Cafes” where you can get things ﬁxed. There’s a bike repair café and a clothes repair-cum-swap-shop event and also miscellaneous pop up repair cafes where you can take electrical gadgets and really almost anything and learn how to mend them. 3. Community Energy Previously, h.energy has provided a platform for the launch of Leominster Solar and Woolhope Woodheat. These early community energy projects are now very successful. This year, Cwm Harry will be holding an open day at the A.D. plant in Ludlow on Saturday 19th for people to learn more about A.D and how you can support a community energy scheme. A.D (Anaerobic Digestion) is sometimes called fracking’s green sister. Both processes are concerned with generating methane gas for energy but where fracking wastes gallons of water and other resources, A.D is all about turning waste into energy and compost. If we took away everything in our lives that depends on electricity to function, homes and ofﬁces would return to being just simple shelters from wind and rain. Electricity has transformed modern life, but how will we go into the future, knowing what we know about climate change? This year h.energy will also be launching ReEnergise Herefordshire, a countywide carbon reduction initiative on Tue, 15/10/2013 - 7:30pm - 9:30pm at The Courtyard.
