BROAD Pimp my Ride T
sheep
HE sun is shining and at last I’ve managed to squeeze in one or two decent bike rides. Heading down to a festival in Oxford last week in my usual leisurely fashion, I couldn’t help noticing, once I was over the River Severn and into the REAL WORLD – Cotswolds, Oxfordshire etc. that this cycling thing is really taking off. Five years ago, in the lanes of Chipping Norton, you’d be lucky to see one other cyclist every hour. These days it’s two every five minutes and they are often couples wearing matching lycra and storming along like the wind, intent on getting some exercise. I, meanwhile, have a bloody great electric motor and am intent on consuming as many ‘pub lunches’ as possible. Sadly however, it still has not made any impact on the quantity of motorised traffic Small Ads 4 you meet when you hit an A road, or the size of the queues of traffic waiting to get into Stow on the Wold and a snaffle up a few scones and some Cotswold nick-knacks. Art 6 The other sign that cycling is taking off in a big way is the recent advert of a Bike Art workshops 12 TV on Freeview. Yes, Channel 251 is now 24 hour, back-to-back cycling programmes. Cinema 20 They are not too choosy about what they show as long as it’s got two wheels but it Dance 24 means I can catch up on the 2011 Tour de France at two o’clock in the morning. That City tales 20 is after I’ve watched my new favourite trash TV programme which is ‘Pimp my Ride’. Food 26 It’s a fairly straightforward reality format. They take someone’s worn out old heap of a car and then completely rebuild it, re-upholster it and re-paint it. There are programmes Music 28 Music workshops 42 like this on UK TV, but this is fronted by a rapper and the style is completely over-the-top L.A. custom with added electronics. Venues 43 When the finished car is revealed to Band directory 44 the owners (being on American TV), Theatre 46 go crazy and start leaping around the garage screaming and crying and Word 50 Grass roots 54 high-fiving all over the place. One recent refit I saw was for Comp therapies 56 an artist and after re-painting the We take no responsibility car and re-upholstering the interior for the veracity of the they then added programmable light information herein shows that played off the roof of the Pete Mustill car. Electronic gadgets popped out Mayfield, Stapleton, of the boot with sound systems and Nr Presteigne, Powys art equipment and then finally coloured paints that sprayed onto the tyres of the car, LD8 2LW so that the artist owner could paint the roads as she is driving along! I bet that goes Tel: 01544 260051 Email: info@broadsheep.com down a treat with the local council. Website: www.broadsheep.com It’s a bit lame that despite all my ‘electric bike, let’s save the planet’ rhetoric, I’m still hooked on these custom car programmes but maybe that’s what we all need to do. Get used to seeing the automobile as a bit of art rather than something to go driving around in. I think I’ve already achieved this state with motorbikes. I don’t have any desire to put on the boots, put on the leathers, put on the helmet and go racing off up the A44 with all the born-again bikers. But I still like looking at them, especially the weirder ones. I am collecting pictures off the net of some of the stranger bikes in order to share them with my Bishop’s Castle motorbike freak friend. However he is such and old Luddite he hasn’t got a mobile or a computer, so I’ll just have to print a couple of the more choice ones here for him. Even Luddites read Broad Sheep!

cinema SAUSAGE PARTY (15) Although slickly animated in brash hues, be warned that SAUSAGE PARTY is no kiddie-friendly heartwarmer. Instead it follows the misfortunates of various supermarket foodstuffs – most notably frankfurters, bread rolls and potatoes who according to cowriter and co-star Seth Rogen (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, NEIGHBOURS), energetically exhort shoppers to liberate them from the shelves, only to undergo a brutal awakening when they realise their fate is to be cooked and eaten. This arch conceit is articulated with a torrent of profanity and discomforting sight gags which include vegetables being skinned alive… and a talking condom. However directors Greg Tiernan (THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE) and Conrad Vernon (SHREK 2) – who also voice key characters alongside Kristen Wiig, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek – correctly presume that adults will love it. CHEVALIER (18) Six men cruise the Aegean aboard a luxury yacht variously fishing, scuba diving and vying for superiority in a series of increasingly bizarre competitive games. These r ange fr om the innocuously mad against-the-clock assembly of Ikea shelving to the almost inevitable comparison of penis size, the whole orchestrated with a quiet relish by the boat’s owner, an imperious 60-something known only as the ‘The Doctor’ (Yorgos Kendros). At one end of the social spectrum is alpha male Yannis (Yorgos Pirassopoulis), at the other his brother, the bumbling, insecure mummy’s boy, Dimitris (Makis Papadimitriou), and much of the film’s tinder-dry humour comes from their awkward relationship. Director/co-writer Athina Rachel Tsangari also produced both DOGTOOTH and LOBSTER so perhaps unsurprisingly CHEVALIER benefits from the droll influence of those films’ director, Yorgos Lanthimos.

THE COMMUNE (15) Inspired by his hippie childhood in C o p e n h a g e n , writer/director Thomas Vi n t e r b e r g ’s l a t e s t finds bored T.V. newsreader Anna (Trine Dyrholm, LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED) coercing her lecturer husband Erik (Ulrich Thomsen, MORTDECAI) to turn the mansion he’s inherited into an experiment in communal living. However Anna becomes rather disenchanted when the Erik starts an affair with one of his students, incidents involving a deranged leftist (Lars Ranthe) and various other inmates who fit or don’t fit into her scheme of things. Reaffirming his versatility following FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD’s costume romance and 2012’s cruel social drama, THE HUNT, Vinterberg and his cast handle maintain a beguiling playfulness, albeit with an underlying seriousness regarding the pitfalls of social engineering which may well resonate with some of Broad Sheep’s readers…. 24 Sept EDDIE THE EAGLE (PG) Chapel Lawn VH 01547 530258 24 Sept YOUTH (15) Neston Civic Hall 0151 336 7805 24 Sept FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (PG) Cawley Hall, Eye 01568 615836 24 Sept FOUR ROOMS (18) Priest Weston VH 01938 561336 24 Sept DAD’S ARMY (PG) Clifton on Teme VH 01886 812238 24 Sept BRIDGE OF SPIES (12A) Ryton VH 01743 718237 27 Sept THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (U) Acton Scott VH 01694 781260 27 Sept DAD’S ARMY (PG) Loppington VH 01939 236240 27 Sept YOUTH (15) Garway VH 01600 750465 29 Sept THE DANISH GIRL (15) Bagley Sports and Social Club 07773 983963 29 Sept JAMES & THE GIANT PEACH (U) Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch 01948 660660 29 Sept BRIDGE OF SPIES (12A) Goodrich VH 01600 890609 29 Sept DAD’S ARMY (PG) Pudleston VH 01568 760606 30 Sept FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (PG) Knighton Community Centre 01547 520602 30 Sept THE DANISH GIRL (15) Market Theatre, Ledbury 07967 517125 30 Sept DAD’S ARMY (PG) Marton VH 01938 580116 30 Sept THE LADY IN THE VAN (12) Little Dewchurch VH 01432 840333

Mr Pernickety’s Peregrinations Mid-Wales....
A
NUMBER of significant geezers have sought to make their mark by wandering around the Pays-de-Galles – the scribbling monks, Gildas and Gerald of Cambrensis, for instance, and the poets, painters, writers, Turner, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Tolkien and more recently the great gazetteer, S Jenkins – have all been inspired to show off their affection for the green-velvet-cloaked mountain landscape. Mr Pernickety, too has long held a great affection for this magical place and has often written of his enjoyment of hoofing it over miles of Marches pathways. Luckily for him, his Lovely Companion is of a similar mind, and he had no trouble persuading her into a challenging stroll between two distinctive Welsh towns, Machynlleth and Llanidloes. Shrugging off the sogginess of this summer, in the first week of August, the LC and Mr P boarded the Arriva Iron Horse to the starting point of their little adventure. Mr P, as ever at the cutting edge, had used a new-fangled interweb BnB booking thingy to find a roost for the night; he and the LC arrived at the charming old town to find themselves billeted in a fine bow-windowed room in a good Victorian terraced villa. It overlooked the town’s boneyard, a short walk from Machynlleth’s truly hideous clock tower, built towards the end of the 19th century in a display of alarming brown-nosedness by the townsfolk to celebrate the coming of age of the Earl of Londonderry’ chinless heir, Viscount Castlereagh. This seems now like a poor excuse for such a lapse in taste, even if, at the time, the young master lived at Y Plas, a plain old gaff on the edge of the town. Despite these minor negatives, Machynlleth has a lot of other stuff to recommend it – many handsome houses from a spread of periods, from hairy mediaeval to cosy Victorian – not least a c15th building on the site where a rebel warrior – the Welsh Che – Owain Glyndwr contrived to set up a Parliament in 1404. This gathering sat only once, just long enough to proclaim Owain Prince of Wales, before going into abeyance until the Welsh Assembly burst into thrilling existence in 2007. Machynlleth is also the watering hole for the geeks and beards from the Centre for Alternative Energy, a few miles up the Dolgellau road. As a result of its long-standing appeal to the arty and the quirky, the town houses the Welsh Museum of Modern Art, and annually hosts a famous comedy festival.

Nevertheless, hunting for victuals on a wet Monday evening was a challenge. The recommended Twenty-One was closed; however, the traditional big hotel, The Wynnstay was open, and surprisingly busy. Old fashioned, in a pleasing way, but modern in its outlook, the management have successfully combined its historic qualities with unstuffy dining arrangements and an individual wacky take on decoration which satisfied even the LC’s acute sense of style and aesthetic. At the back they have installed a pizzeria, whose products looked very enticing, and which has twice been named Pizzeria of the Year by The Times newspaper. Mr P will have to report on it in a future Wooly Organ as he was too knackered on this occasion. In fact, he and the LC were so excited about the prospect of a thirty mile yomp across the trackless moorland of Mid-Wales, they weren’t too peckish, and from an interesting menu, they boringly chose risotto, he with smoked haddock, she with mushrooms – both well made and enjoyable, though,
The Wynnstay Hotel, Machynlleth
Mr P accepts, not much to go on for readers eager for his review. Most interesting was the dark wine of the Barbera grape from Piemonte, which was a delicious bargain. Mr P learned subsequently that The Wynnstay imports a range of proper Italian wines on tap directly from the vineyards – a very sound strategy, and a reason in itself for eating there. There is in this handsome mid-Georgian hostelry a very pleasing sense of individuality and imagination, and, as importantly, an infectious desire to make the most of it. This is especially impressive given that the new owners reopened the hotel in March this year, after it had gone disastrously bust under the previous management, and they are still doing the place up. Mr Pernickety and his LC strode out off next morning, well-refreshed from their Air BnB, and hit the Owain Glyndwr Trail, a route first devised around 2000 and subsequently rerouted to make more use of ancient tracks, drovers roads, prehistoric ridgeways, mediaeval sunken lanes and even a Roman road. It’s a challenging, and fully rewarding journey, with astounding views – even the vast Carno wind farm doesn’t entirely ruin the prospect. At one point, staggering up the shale flanks of Foel Fadian (1850 ft) where they ascended over 1,200 ft in an hour or so, by the time they crawled onto the bleak plateau at the top, Mr P had seriously considered the styling of his coffin (unpolished elm with dove-tailed corners and rope handles). In the 33 miles the route meanders between Machynlleth and Llanidloes, there is just one tiny hamlet which has anywhere to stay. Mr P and the LC arrived at Bron y Llys B&B in Dylife more or less on their knees, to find a supremely comfortable room, with a squishy bed, cotton sheets, a large efficient shower (if not the deep bath the LC craved), as well as fluffy slippers and towelling robes. Mr P with uncharacteristic preparedness had booked dinner – a Chicken and Leek pie, and a kind of stroganov of Welsh Mountain Pork – both delicious and served in civilised surroundings. With a packed lunch supplied by the people at the BnB (there isn’t a pub or shop between there and Llanidloes), Mr P cranked his seized-up limbs into motion to follow the LC’s long striding scotch eggs up onto the moor where Romans once mined lead. The rain eased and the sun, not always a friend to the Pays de Galles, seeped out, and a string of wonderful vignettes appeared while the manmade lake of Clywedog came into sight. An unplanned stop and cup of tea in the unsophisticated surroundings of the café at the Clywedog Yacht club (yes, there is one) sustained Mr P’s
intrepid party until a few hours later, when they sat down for dinner in the attractive town of Llanidloes, at the Bengal Brasserie (which, Mr P was told, has recently changed management.) The LC (who thinks she knows something about ethnic food) warmly praised the quality of the almond Peshwar naan and her Chicken Sag while Mr P happily gulped pints of Cobra with a good meaty Lamb Pasanda. The following morning before taking the bus from Llanidloes to Newtown to rejoin the rattler, Mr P and the LC called in at the amenable Great Oak Café (encouraged by a local who called it the Hippy Café). The delicious coffee was from the consistently good Ross-on-Wye roaster, James’s Gourmet Coffee. With newspapers and a copy of Broadsheep on every table, the place is everything Mr P thinks a café should be, even as a strictly non-meat establishment. He and the LC will return to sample the much heralded cakes and veggie cuisine on the next leg of their voyage. www.misterpernickety.com

Artistic Directors: Eleanor Alberga and Thomas Bowes
This year’s Arcadia Festival is in Leintwardine, Kingsland and Downton and has the theme “At Home and Abroad”. Arcadia, this year extended to include film and discussion, is devised and directed by composer Eleanor Alberga and violinist Thomas Bowes. An array of exiles - voluntary and enforced - travellers and gypsies together with those who stayed at home and with a sub-plot of poets – George Herbert, Matthew Arnold, Lord Byron; Emperors and dictators - Napoleon, Francis the Second, that little corporal; the cast for the Seventh Arcadia Festival is an extraordinary list of characters and all sorts of intriguing connections and intersections. These currents and reverberations will be explored in three concerts.
‘Such was its distinction that I feel it can’t be long before the Arcadia Festival joins the long-established staples of the British music festival calendar’ Paul Conway, Musical Opinion Quarterly, on Arcadia 2015 Concerts in the historic 14th century Leintwardine church, its fellow Norman church in Kingsland, and in the delightful rural setting of Downton, will again bring superb musicianship and three compelling programmes to this ancient and beautiful part of Herefordshire. For more information on guest artists, our two composers-in-residence Adam Gorb and Eleanor Alberga, in discussion at Aardvark Books and the screening of Tony Palmer’s 1981 penetrating and moving film tribute to William Walton, and the full programmes for the three concerts, go to: www.arcadiamusic.org.uk Tickets: £15 each, two concerts for £25, three for £30 from Ludlow Assembly Rooms 01584 878141 www.ludlowassemblyrooms.co.uk or order from local agents 01547 540762, 01568 709579. ON ANIMAL INDUSTRIALISATION The majority of pigs, chickens and increasingly cows spend their lives in intensive indoor units harming us, the environment and the animals themselves. The relationship between domesticated animals and mankind is being violated, propped up by the over-use of antibiotics with its attendant risk to human health.

grass roots A Small Gateway to the World I N MY mind’s eye I try to picture the kind of railway station I love. It has a kind of rural simplicity. But also a buzz. This station includes people. It may not be a London Euston or a Manchester Piccadilly, but it is still a place where we pass in transit – whether we are on our way to the office or a rugby match or auntie’s house or the other side of the world.
I am trying to turn this idea into something with more shape. I am writing the first word onto the first blank sheet of paper. Gateway. And this word seeks other words, in an effort to say something precise and uncomplicated. And now I have a sentence. A small gateway to the world. I am struggling with the way this sentence sits with other sentences. A small gateway to the world. Not another shopping mall. But perhaps a local trading post – with a commitment to not damaging the world. I would like the idea contained within these words to be delicious to people. Consider the Café des Fleurs at Rye Station At Rye Station in Sussex, an empty station building has become a Café and Flower Shop. An old empty building can be a sad place. A deserted railway station after dark or before dawn is especially empty when you have to wait there for a train. It’s not much of an incentive to leave the car at home. But this café, not designed by Pumpkin Cafes, or Starbucks, but by Lucy Forrester and her gran, opens up early for commuters, serving great coffee and homemade porridge, and very good scrambled eggs on toast. The florists occupy the other side of the cafe, where they make displays for weddings and special events. Local people actually come to the café so that they can watch the flower displays being made. By combining the two business ideas the whole thing becomes viable in a small town. From Rye, you can travel by rail up north to Yorkshire and the town of Settle – gateway to the legendary Settle and Carlisle Line. Settle Station was first opened in 1876. It had a Station Master’s house, goods shed, weigh office, cattle dock, signal box and water tank, but goods facilities were dismantled in 1970. Today the station might be too small for the corporates, but it has a ticket office, a shop selling local produce, and a waiting room which is

about to become a micro pub, complete with honkytonk piano. A unique community-based company runs the station facilities at Settle and also further along the line at Appleby. The same company operates locally sourced on-train catering, creating jobs and valuable contracts for small suppliers. If you haven’t been there, you should consider a visit. And finally to Llandeilo on the Heart of Wales Line At Llandeilo station there was once a station pub called “The Refresh.” Old locals still remember it with a smile, but the building is long gone. Llandeilo Station has been a lonely platform at the end of a lonely road for a long time. In my mind’s eye I try to picture the kind of railway station I love. It has a kind of simplicity. An aesthetic. The Llandeilo “Station Hub” is a small, transportable building with a covered aisle, leading to a modern composting toilet. It was designed along the lines of the old freight wagons and built with FSC Welsh wood by David Bamford and a build team from Presteigne. The idea was to create a space that could be run on a tiny budget, by and for the community. The design includes a rainwater harvesting system and optional renewable energy unit. The result is a stand alone, multi purpose, mini-building. Not another shopping mall. But rather a gateway with a commitment to not damaging the world. Because when you leave this gateway to travel somewhere else in the world, you need to know that you are not damaging whatever it is you’re discovering. Already a new company are starting to distribute local and organic produce from the station hub at Llandeilo. And it has recently been shortlisted for a national award for the most enhanced station. So this has already happened. But what if we built more of these hubs, for other lonely stations, and for other community enterprises? The builders of the Llandeilo Hub are up for it, so the Heart of Wales Line Development Company will help them market this idea to the rail industry. With several stations already expressing an interest, it could just happen. To find out more about hub sales, you can contact rachelzzzyx@gmail.com 07805 864823 On behalf of D.S. Bamford and the Heart of Wales Line DevCo. Rachel Francis, www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk
