O

ver the last few weeks I have been at 4 “pop” festivals and so I am feeling pretty knowledgeable on the subject. I have therefore decided, despite my disastrous showing at my last attempt at examinations in 1965, to resit my “Pop” Festival A level Exam. So here goes. Wish me luck. I hope that when its all over I’ll get my picture in the papers or on the telly, with the results in my hand, dancing around with a big grin on my face, hugging my fellow spotty little youths and basking in the fact that I can waste the next 3 years and a shed load of money taking drugs while pretending I’m studying social sciences at the University of Bromyard or some such salubrious joint.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION SINGAPORE in collaboration with UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE LOCAL EXAMINATIONS SYNDICATE General Certificate of Education Advanced Level LIGHT MUSIC FESTIVALS Paper 1 multiple choice 80693 September 2013 1 hour

Read these instructions first. Write in pencil. Do not use staples, paper clips, glue or correction fluid. For each question there are 3/4 possible answers choose the one you think is correct and record your choice on a separate sheet. Question A After what period of time does the average person become completely catatonic when forced to listen to 3 different bass lines played at 30 kilowatts from 3 different tents all less than 50 metres away? 1. At the end of this next Beyonce track. 2. Just as soon as this hangover wears off and I start to pay attention again 3. “I warned you that you were too old for this sort of malarkey” 4. Bring it on! Know where I can score some ketamine? (Word is suggesting a different spelling – Calamine!)

Question B What would a time traveler from one of the lentil eating, no toilets, muddy field, free festivals of the 1970’s say when told that a weekend at Wilderness Festival will cost you £200 for a ticket, £750 for a yurt to sleep in, plus £55 a pop every time you fancy a meal in the banqueting tent? 1. Glad to see capitalism is still alive and well. 2. That would be my entire year’s salary if only I had a job. 3. Far out! Question C Identify the main differences between The Bakewell Festival and The Secret Garden Party. 1. The Secret Garden Party looks like the circus field at Glastonbury after a particularly drug addled all night rave. The Bakewell Festival looks like a rather badly attended wedding party that nobody remembered to order the flowers for. 2. The guy who runs The Bakewell Festival likes music. The Secret Gardeners just like noise. 3. In order to placate the neighbours The Bakewell Festival put on their loud rocking bands early in the evening and the quiet folky ones later so that as the hard drinking audience get drunker the music gets soberer! The Secret Gardeners don’t give a monkey’s, they own the estate and the neighbours and they probably own you too. Question D Why do the customers at The Linton Summer Sessions have a smile on their face? 1. Because they don’t realize what they are missing. 2. Because they do realize what they are missing. 3. Because, just maybe, sitting around at a small outdoor venue with a couple of hundred mates quaffing good beer at a reasonable price and all listening to the same bands together at a non-stomach churning volume is actually where it’s at. Question E When does a music festival become a food festival? 1. When the music is so crappy you might as well just eat. 2. When you can buy sushi, lobster, venison burgers, ostrich, and hand crafted ice cream from the stalls but you can’t find a decent rock and roll band for love nor money. 3. When the Wilderness banqueting tent features Ottolenghi, Mark Hix and Russell Norman also Moro, St John and Thyme all have sit down food tents – drool ….drool ….drool, who gives a shit about the music?

“Some Dirty Work Done At The Font, Jeeves”

HIS was Bertie Wooster’s reaction on discovering that his favourite uncle - Uncle Tom Travers, married to formidable Aunt Dahlia, was saddled with the name of ‘Portarlington’. Enough to put a fellow right off his pre-prandial snifter, don’t you know. The Wooster novels are full of people with odd names: Boko Fittleworth, Kipper Herring, Stilton Cheesewright and the unforgettable Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright. These, of course, are nicknames, moreover, nicknames given to imaginary people who don’t exist in real life. [The editor of Broadsheep disclaims all responsibility for the consequences of any shock this revelation might cause to readers who need to get out more.] But what about REAL people with bizarre names? Yes, you do have to wonder about the state of mind of those parents who lumber their offspring with ghastly monikers. Mr. and Mrs. Robbins, friends of my mother, were sane, caring people. They even looked normal. So why in the name of all that’s holy did they name their daughter Nesta? Was it a joke? Or maybe they thought the leg-pulling and teasing she was bound to suffer would be character-forming. Or - the worst possible explanation - they just never noticed? Surely the vicar could have refused? No, should have refused. And what are we to make of the couple whose two children were called Sam and Ella? Or the neighbours of a friend of mine - Mr. and Mrs. Stupp? Any name, no matter how odd, would have been better for their son than Michael. But occasionally a name can be the making of someone. In the Black Country, my homeland, lived a Mr. Wall. His parents had christened him ‘Walter’. Thus his career came ready-made: he opened a carpet shop. No choice really. What a pity his name doesn’t appear in the children’s card game alongside Mr. Bun the Baker, Mr. Stamp the Postman and Mr. Greedy the Banker. The name chosen for a child says much more about the parents than about the offspring. It’s claimed you can tell a lot about someone by the books they read, the clothes they wear, the places they go on holiday, the way they speak, and so on. But nothing tells you quite so much as the naming of their progeny. With a little practice you can easily sort the parents out. The children’s names could mean that the parents are pretentious, have a misplaced sense of humour, want their children to struggle, or want them to stand out from the crowd, etc. The names are telling you about THEIR ambitions and neuroses. They’re shouting ‘I bet YOU haven’t got a Portarlington or a Sunrise, have you?’ You really do have to feel sorry for some of the children. When the editor of this august journal becomes Prime Minister - it’s merely a matter of time - his first task will be to outlaw the giving of grotesque names to children, or at least to make it easy for the child to choose a sensible name later on. Your name should be how YOU want other people to see you - not a statement of parental hopes and fantasies on your behalf. And now, to cheer us up and take our minds off global warming and the endless recession, we have a royal

baby, one day to be king. But what to call the child? Sadly a missed opportunity. Many readers have sought my philosophical insight on the subject. The names should reflect the fact that this boy will become the leader of the United Kingdom, a land with a diverse population. Surely his names should acknowledge this? So, here are my suggesstions for his parents to consider: Iorwerth, Declan, Seamus, Eachthighearna, Ythel, Imran, Ng. And possibly George. What do these names have in common? [We know that Broadsheep readers like a puzzle.] Yes, you’ve got it: they are all names belonging to regions and cultures within the UK. Quite. But what they also have in common is the absolute certainty that none of them [with the exception of George] will ever find its way onto the royal birth certificate. Prince Iorwerth? King Declan? There is no more chance of a King Declan than a King Wayne. Or a Queen Sunrise. Names are powerful things. An old lady of my acquaintance, the mother of a school chum, asked me once how long we had known one another. Up to this point she had always used my family name. When I replied that it must be a good thirty years she said that it was high time she called me ‘Geoffrey’ [not my name]. At once I felt like a different person: a Geoffrey. They say you are what we eat. You’re also what you’re called. Or perhaps not. Philosopher-in-Residence

FRANCES HA (Cert 15) Frances (Greta Gerwig, TO ROME WITH LOVE), a disorganised second stringer in a struggling New York ballet company, shares a quirky humour and an apartment with best friend, Sophie (Mickey Sumner, THE BORGIAS). When Sophie moves in with her boyfriend, Frances can’t cover the rent and so begins an awkward odyssey of fleeting friendships and sofa-surfing during which her eccentricity and well-meant pratfalls proliferate. A lonely weekend in Paris proves a nadir for the self-confessed ‘undatable’ 28 year-old from which the only way is up, albeit with wryly unpredictable consequences. Noah Baumbach (THE SQUID AND THE WHALE) shot this moving, often toecurling funny tale in monochrome which lends his clever, wordy narrative added resonance, and Gerwig’s and Sumner’s subtle yet spirited performances amply justify their critical acclaim as rising stars. THE LONE RANGER (Cert 12A) The director and star of the PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN franchise march forward in time to update the legend of THE LONE RANGER, with Johnny Depp uncannily inhabiting the character of faithful sidekick Tonto. Introduced as a washed-up sideshow oddity, Tonto reluctantly recalls how John Reid transmuted into the wrongrighting masked hero and his subsequent account forms the basis of the Gore Verbinski’s beautifully realised film. Perhaps u n s u r p r i s i n g l y, i t e m b r a c e s m a n y staggering set-pieces, kicking-off with bandits derailing a train transporting their notorious leader to the gallows. Arnie Hammer (THE SOCIAL NETWORK) is suitably upstanding as the Ranger/Reid although his past is revealed as less noble than imagined and Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner and Ruth Wilson contribute strong supporting roles. Ultimately however, this is Depp’s film.

LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED (Cert 15) Is it really autumn already? It is? Then hurrah, it’s time to resurrect Film Soc. Corner! And although Flicks In The Sticks isn’t exactly a club, it does exactly what it says on the tin, as indeed does this latest from the generally rather earnest Susanne Bier (the Oscar-winning IN A BETTER WORLD) who nonetheless exhibits her considerable capacity for surprise, not least of which is Pierce Brosnan playing a testy fruit’n’veg mogul whose son is getting married in Sorrento but leads an otherwise all-Scandinavian cast. En route he quite literally bumps into recovering cancer victim and mother of the bride (Tryne Dyrholm), but due to sibling jealousy, spousal death and rampant infidelity, theirs isn’t an obvious pairing. In his best outing since Polanski’s THE GHOST, Brosnan clearly has a ball, the chemistry between the two leads is palpable and in creating this highly entertaining grown-up rom-com, Bier seems energised by the narrative departure she’s taken. The Marches, Ludlow

T

24

HE Marches is a newish bar and restaurant sited on the north side of Castle Square in Ludlow. It was, until some years ago, one of Ludlow’s more historic taverns, a handsome, early Georgian inn with a fine assembly room on the first floor. In recent years, the George suffered the cruel fate of falling into the ownership of one of the country’s largest and most heinous of multiple pub landlords, Punch Taverns (proprietors of innumerable underperforming, antisocial licensed premises). Punch Taverns have been responsible for the degradation of several formerly fine pubs in Ludlow, most notably the Blue Boar and the George, which by the time it closed had degenerated into a lager, footer and vomit venue – a disgrace to the town, a place into which Mr P refused to venture. In its death throes, it even sprouted a short-lived, tacky and rowdy disco called (with no obvious justification) The GSpot. Imagine, then, Mr P’s excitement when he learned that it was to close and undergo a major refurbishment. Perhaps, he dared to hope, Punch Taverns, now under enormous pressure to reduce their current borrowings of £2.4billion, had done the decent thing and sold it to someone with the knowledge, panache and funds to give it the care and love it deserves. Alas, he was to be disappointed. Mister P doesn’t normally concern himself with the financial condition of the places he visits on his readers’ behalf, but the George and its recent alteration present a clear case of a job badly bodged through lack of funds (as well as lack of vision). The poor old, neglected inn had been identified by Punch as one if its ‘core’ pubs among the 4,000 it still owns and the company, casting around for a policy to placate its impatient lenders, announced that they were going to spend a bit (not much) on revitalising these core pubs. They found a new tenant (these somewhat naive optimists appear to be born every minute), put in hand a fairly superficial face-lift, and the place reopened as The Marches in the spring. Mr Pernickety can sadly report that the opportunity really to make something of this excellent site has been almost entirely wasted. The two most obvious improvements that should have been made have simply been ducked. There was a wonderful chance to give Castle Square its first, open-fronted brasserie with seating spilling happily out on to the capacious pavement – something that would have been welcomed by public and traders alike, and would have added an extra dimension to the overall ambience of the Square. Instead, access has been moved to a side entrance beneath a murky alleyway with the pointless addition of a dedicated doorman/bouncer for no clear reason and, presumably, at some extra cost. Given that the place was no longer intended to be a ‘traditional’ pub (which is fair enough) and that selling food is the priority, it would have made far more sense, aesthetically and for punters’ enjoyment, to use the fine old high-ceilinged former assembly room upstairs as the

principal eating area. Punch decided simply to destroy this excellent asset and plonk the loos and kitchen up there, while cramming diners and drinkers into a series of small, badly lit, claustrophobic spaces on the ground floor. Mr Pernickety, always careful to allow even the most unpromising places to show their gastronomic credentials, dragged his somewhat sceptical Lovely Companion there one Saturday evening. Her face fell as she saw the interior of the place – grey and Cambridge blue with a few glossy scarlet fittings, naff faux-leather armchairs, dull pictures on the walls and a vinyl ‘wood’ floor – about as tasteful as Katie Price’s range of horse rugs. The dining furniture is square and clumpy in tan lacquer; some of the tables are four feet high, like the Giant’s in Jack & the Beanstalk, with stools to match. Mr P couldn’t see the point of eating on stilts. It all looked, the LC said, as if it had come straight from the section of the caterers’ furniture catalogue marked: “Pub – Contemporary”. After some toing-and-froing, Mr P and the LC were seated on a normal-sized table near the bar, beneath brash, unsubtle white lights. They were handed a menu which was a jolly, jokey hotch-potch, intended to appeal to anyone and everyone – a dangerous strategy in any field of entertainment. From a narrow choice of starters Mr P and his new bride ordered Grilled Goat’s Cheese Wrapped in Prosciutto Ham with a Cranberry Relish (£5.95), and a Baker’s Bread Board (£3.45). The first item of food arrived about half an hour after Mr P and the LC had sat down. They enjoyed the goat’s cheese and its relationship with the ham and the cranberry sauce, but the LC, although ravenous after a long day’s work, baulked at the Bread Board – a pointless pile of hunks of ordinary bread with half a roast garlic and tiny dishes of balsamic vinegar and flavourless olive oil. The menu describes several of its wines and cocktails as ‘quaffable’ – an adjective often misplaced and always irritating. Mr P and the LC had a couple of glasses of ‘smooth and quaffable’ El Muro Temperanillo/Granacha, which was enjoyable enough, but not good value at £4.10 for 175cl. Mr P had heard that a top-notch pizza oven had been installed, and encouraged the LC, still peckish, to choose a Stonebaked Pizza from a selection of exotic toppings with silly names. She would have a preferred a classic – like a Quattro Stagioni, or Capricciosa or La Reine – but had to settle for a Kypros (£9.25), with feta cheese, olives, sun-dried tomato, rosemary roasted peppers and spinach. Although she didn’t think the combination worked, she found the texture of the pizza good, thin and crispy, and she liked the saltiness of the feta. Mr P’s Lamb Shank (£14.95), on the other hand, was not good. It tasted like a lamb shank that had been hanging around in the kitchen for a while, waiting for somewhere to go, with all the signs of being (although

it may not have been) a Brakes Bros pre-prepared dish. It had certainly been re-heated, and overcooked in the process. The meat, far from being tender, as billed, was dark and chewy – the LC said ‘soapy’. The ‘rich red wine and herb sauce’ was syrupy, gloopy and developing a skin. The ‘caramelised root vegetables’ were dry and bland. Disappointment continued with Mr P’s pudding – Seasonal Crumble and Ice-cream. He was expecting a traditional crumble, but was served a kind of cocktail glass containing warm, stewed plums and berries that showed no sign of being recently picked, with what looked and tasted like crumbled, broken biscuit on top – about 30p’s worth of ingredients at £4.95 which he had no urge to finish. The management at The Marches seem not to expect their customers to want to talk to one another, in providing a relentless barrage of loud, fast rock’n’roll’, lousy accompaniment for a grown-up dinner. It would be fair to say that some noisy punters were enjoying themselves, talking vigorously and shrieking with laughter; however the normally sanguine Mr Pernickety was sorry that the ambience, the indifferent service, the bad food, the unlovely interior and bright lighting didn’t provide a very good experience at all, which left him and the LC feeling disgruntled and sad that so little had been made of the old George’s potential. In the meantime, he can’t really recommend it to discerning diners. Mr Pernickity - www.misterpernickety.com

Fracking is a Local Issue N

46

OT so long ago it was summer. And we were swimming in the rivers. Perhaps you were too … standing barefoot on cold wet earth, looking down into the dark depths of the river. Maybe you tested the water for degrees of extreme coldness with a cautious toe. You were sure you wanted to dive … I mean you’ve done more difficult things. The kids, maybe, if you have such things, were already splashing about merrily. “Don’t splash” you begged. Or perhaps shouted. The river was clear, stone brown and flowing deep. One dive. That’s all. You raised your arms, for the challenge, forefingers together, up on to your toes … and then paused. Perhaps you would wait till the sun came out from that little wispy cloud. Or maybe a sandwich first. But after another moment, where you nearly gave in, you thought about all the things you would never achieve … and you dived. Head and shoulders hit the water, cold gripped your heart and when you bobbed to the surface with hairstyle ruined you were totally and utterly jubilant. Like an idiot you celebrated. Like a wild thing. That’s what its like. Swimming in rivers. It’s another side of life. Not the civilised, have you paid you bills and filled out the appropriate forms side of life. The other side where nature has no price and is not idyllic, just real and powerful. And as the kids grow up, celebrate exam results, sign contracts, ease themselves into a jacket for the first job interview, perhaps this wild swimming memory will stay with them too, and somehow see them right. But now it is autumn … and here in Britain we have Fracking. Fracking is shorthand for an industrial process called hydro-fracturing. Basically, the oil and gas industries drill deep into the earth down to shale rock. Then they blast water, sand and chemicals between the layers of shale, to break up the rock and release gas and oil. As oil fields dwindle, this is one way to keep fossil fuels going for a bit longer. Its quite resource heavy and not good for the atmosphere although not as bad as coal, and from a local perspective there is, at the very least, a trade off to be agreed. For example, each fracking operation uses up lots of fresh local water … volume varies depending on geology and location … but a good estimate is between 2 and 6.4 million gallons for each frack. Afterwards the water, now contaminated by the powerful chemical agents needed to break up the rock such as Benzene, must be dealt with. If it got back into the water courses there would be a catastrophe, so these millions of gallons of wastewater must be transported somewhere and stored. Analysis suggests that to match the fuel we get from the North Sea we would need 10-20,000 wells… some above ground on the relatively small ‘drilling pads’ but with underground networks and wells, potentially running for miles deep under land and homes. It’s a big operation. Communities affected will get paid, presumably via local councils, and £100,000 is the going rate. On the other hand, rivers are more valuable than money anyway. Not

just a place to swim in summer but part of a network that forms the mainstay of ecology and life in general, and in the event of serious spills, that value can’t really be compensated for. For this reason and others, Fracking is a local issue. So local people should be consulted. I really think that. In the event of local licence applications, we should look to our local councillors to ensure public consultation, to make sure that there is opportunity for fair and democratic process and to make sure the drilling companies, if planning is agreed, can be held to account. To make this work, communities need un-hyped, scientific, technological, complete not cherry picked facts. Sound, proven information should form the basis of our consultation. That’s fair. And also we need to know if there will be enough water, who pays for it, and what will happen to all the contaminated water. And yes we should hear the worse case scenarios and what happens in the event of a spill … there have been spills in America. Clean water is just as essential as energy. You can’t trade one for the other. And through all of this we should remember there are other options for energy although none of them may be perfect. Decisions like this have to be informed by real facts, not cash handouts, and they must put local ecology before corporate profit. I think we deserve that. Rachel at www.sharpeningpencils.co.uk

Many also reveal the history, archaeology, flora, fauna or folklore of the area, such as lost landscapes and mysterious monuments, battles, hill forts, the ghost of a royal hunting forest and the last haunt of the fairies. Whichever walk you choose, the welcome and the scenery are guaranteed to be superb. There are several events planned as well including
